SPEAKER_02

Hello, everybody. Welcome to Snacks What You Get, the weekly podcast where mother and son review snacks and discuss what they've eaten this week. I'm Chris, the son, and this is Debbie, the mum. Hello, everybody. Welcome to another week of Snacks What You Get.

SPEAKER_00

Hello, everybody.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you for uh coming back to us for another week. Um, we're very excited, and I would say very excited to announce we broke the 100 listeners listens uh threshold we did.

SPEAKER_00

I know, I can't believe it. Over a hundred times we've been downloading.

SPEAKER_02

Well, 104 is the official total. Now, obviously, that's the cumulative of all the episodes together. Um, total number, but yeah, that's it. And one episode episode one is um on 34 and on its own.

SPEAKER_00

Oh wow.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so thank you everybody again for listening. This is this is fun for us, and we're glad that other people seem to be enjoying it.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, I do.

SPEAKER_02

And um, yeah, so thank you again, and we'll get into it this week. So we'll start off with new bites.

SPEAKER_00

New bites.

SPEAKER_02

So what have you had this week then?

SPEAKER_00

Well, this week I was having a bit of a what I call a lazy week for breakfast at work. So I I usually start about quarter to seven, and then because of the tablets I'm on, I have to take my tablets before I go to work, and I can't eat for two hours.

SPEAKER_02

Right, okay.

SPEAKER_00

So I usually take my breakfast to work with me. So this week I tried a new flavour protein porridge pot from Sainsbury's.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. And it was the um So being a porridge one, was that you had hot water to it?

SPEAKER_00

I just had hot water to it, yeah. And it was one of it was a slightly bigger pot, and it's the Sainsbury's maple nut protein porridge pot with 14 grams of protein in it.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. And how was it?

SPEAKER_00

It was delicious.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, was it, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not gonna lie, it had proper bits of nut in it, and obviously the maple syrup flavour. I mean, there was nothing wrong with it. Just added hot water to it, um, left it for a couple of minutes, and it was really nice. I I I will definitely be buying that again.

SPEAKER_02

And how much was that?

SPEAKER_00

95p.

SPEAKER_02

Oh wow, that is that's not bad, is it?

SPEAKER_00

No, I know it's not as cheap as the uh your bog standard supermarket owned brand, which is r between 40 and 50 pence. But still, it's not it was really nice, and it was a slightly bigger pot, and obviously everyone's on about you need to up your protein into there was more protein in it, and it was a nice way to do it. Yeah for my muscles.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

But it was really nice. I I I I know it's a bit hot for porridge at this time of year, but I thought this week I'll just have some porridge pots. So I got um I tried that one for Sageries, not tried it before, but I will definitely be buying that one again.

SPEAKER_02

Oh that's good then. 95p. That makes it I'm again, I'm not saying people should do this or anything, but that's less than a fiver for a week's worth of work uh breakfasts, which isn't too too bad. I mean, if you again, I think if you were doing it every day, you would start to go, okay, that's somewhere I could cut money down. But even just maybe once or twice a week just to help break up what you're having, that's quite an okay price, isn't it? To do that.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I tend to buy breakfast or make breakfast for the three because I'm only in the office three days a week. Oh, yeah, so it's even cheaper, yeah. So I only buy the the three pots per week, or this week anyway. Um, but yeah, it was really nice, and I I will buy that again. Oh, good. What about yourself?

SPEAKER_02

So we've been on holiday this week on a staycation thing, and weren't lovely. Yeah, and when we were there, we um your self-catering accommodation. We there's the Marks and Spencer's food hall nearby.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, how convenient.

SPEAKER_02

Now I I know, and this happened to be the week before the one near us is now opening. So we thought, oh, we'll treat ourselves while we're away, we'll get our food from Marks and Spencer. So it's been difficult to narrow it down to just the one thing, but I've chosen the Marks and Spencer's food crunchy peanut bars, which is basically their version of a Snickers bar ice cream. Oh, that was good, and yes, it was delicious. Um they uh they they they're very similar size to it. So if you're thinking like what size, it's very similar size, and they come in about a box of six instead of six, instead of like four normally, yeah. They say it's an ice cream coated in milk chocolate, but it's peanut butter flavour ice cream, and then the rest of it's the same, so you know peanut um caramel. I would say, obviously, there's a direct comparison right there, um, on there, that out of all the of the ones I've tried, these were probably my favourite, because I'll eat little, they do their own versions, don't they?

SPEAKER_01

As well, they do, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That I will say I think this was the best one I've tried. Um, but only if you like something a bit more savoury, even though it's very sweet. By that I mean as in they were they weren't as sweet as the other ones, um, as a normal one. I liked that. But that is a trend we noticed with a lot of their stuff. We tried their version of the peanut butter cups on there. Tasted a lot more like peanut butter than the Reese stuff where it's very sugary peanut butter. There's tasted a lot less sweet. Again, make of that what you will, your mileage may vary on how you feel it, but yeah, but anyway, back to these. Really nice. The peanut ice cream isn't quite as peanut y as others, but it was nice because there were a lot more peanut pieces in it. Oh, yeah, crunch book, which was really good. Now, the sticking point.

SPEAKER_00

Oh God, tell me the price.

SPEAKER_02

Six bars in there. Rather, rather than. No, no, no, no, no. Well, not far. Um five pounds for the pack of six. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, ouch. But then I suppose you're getting six, aren't you?

SPEAKER_02

Well, the problem is, I believe the Snickers are normally around £3, £3.50 something for a pack of four.

SPEAKER_01

For four, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I never ever bought them when they're not on offer down to about £2.25 or £2.50 for the pack of four. So that's that's the bit where it's a bit of a sticker because the Audi versions, oh, what they call racer bars, is it? Yeah, their racer bar ice cream is really, really nice. And that's only I think that's £2.50 for four. For four. So you could get eight for the price of the six Marks and Spencer's ones, which is 25% more for the same price. But I do think they were worth it, oddly. Again, if you're buying them weekly or if you've got a busy like a family where you had to buy just for one week, you'd have to buy two or three boxes. I get yeah, it's it's unsustainable to do that unless you're doing very well. But yeah, for me, that they were delicious.

SPEAKER_00

So that works out about 83 pence per ice cream, which isn't too bad. And the oldie ones are 63 pence.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's not it's not a million miles away. No, I think because they force you into the six and the five pound price point, you almost would accept getting four if you only had to spend £2.50, if you know what I mean. It's it's kind of you might not want to spend five pounds, and so therefore you're happy to get less, but there is no other option. There is only the pack of six, so you have to spend the five pounds. Um, but like I said, very nice. So I don't think anyone would regret getting them. It's just when you look at the price, and if you're not on holiday in a bit of a spend mode, you you might do a double take and uh and go five pounds really.

SPEAKER_00

So five pounds for six months. It's yeah. Well, I'm glad you like them. They were very nice, and I tell you what, when um when I visit this new Mars and Spencer's, I will be trying them.

SPEAKER_02

You you've got to. They but yes, they were delicious. Anyway. Well, that was new bites. Yeah, that was um something new that we tried this week. And that brings us into our main segment, the tasting grounds. It's the tasting grounds. So, for the tasting ground this week, uh tasting grounds this week, we've got a bit of a mixture of stuff that's basically it's new. We've got two distinct categories, I should say, um, on there. And they all uh new, basically, aren't they? That's the best way to describe them.

SPEAKER_00

One of them's a continuation of what we tried last week, because I did say if uh the um hot raspberry popcorn, if I could pick the other two flavours up, I would.

SPEAKER_02

So that's what we've got. This week we've got the other two flavours of that new covered popcorn, coated popcorn that was it Lidl are doing now, and we've also got two um Milky Bar based ones. One is the new Milky Bar Crunchy Pops, and the other one, oh I thought it was new, but it doesn't say new on it, so maybe I've missed the boat on it.

SPEAKER_00

But it's um it doesn't say new, but it is new, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's the Milky Bar Aero Collaborator like that, which yeah, sounds right up both our streets on there. So those are the four items. And where would you like to start this week?

SPEAKER_00

Um, well, let's start with what I think is going to be the weirdest one, which is the mango and orange popcorn, hot mango and orange popcorn.

SPEAKER_02

So this is the same raccoon-fronted um brand as before, which is a little one, and it says this is the chocolate-coated caramelised popcorn, hot mango and orange flavour. Yes, just rolls off the tongue. Um, and it says, yeah, the description is caramelised popcorn in a white coating, not white chocolate, in a white coating with spicy mango and orange. Now, last week when we tried the raspberry, was it raspberry one? Yes, we didn't think it was that spicy.

SPEAKER_00

No, it wasn't.

SPEAKER_02

And also, my wife does not like spice and she really enjoyed them. So not spicy at all, just really delicious. But you're right, I think this is an odd flavour. Hot mango. I've not tried spicy mango before.

SPEAKER_00

No. Curious to know as to whether they've stuck a sticker over that one like they did over there. Instead of saying chocolate, it says choco, and then there's like a sticker over a piece of popcorn.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, and I'm gonna each one has had this, yeah. Right, and I will peel it off to double check, but it looks like it is a sticker from there. But what they've done that's odd, instead of being a last-minute sticker, they've just stuck on, it's um it's it's matching each of the popcorns. So on this one, it's got that white and slightly orange popcorn. The other one had the one with the pink on it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's like a sticker of the actual piece of popcorn.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, a piece of popcorn, it looks like a piece of popcorn, but this one, the caramelised popcorn, is a chocolate-coloured one. Um, so yeah, intriguing. Now, give me a second.

SPEAKER_00

Again, a shout out to the poor person whose job it was to stick those stickers on in the factory.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there's a sticker.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, unless you think there's a machine that can be capable of doing that, which I find hard to believe.

SPEAKER_02

I'm I'm sure there is a machine on there, but I'm I reckon that'll be a person. Yeah. Um, but yeah, chocolate coated. So the word chocolate, as as you said, mum, is slightly covered, so it just says chocolate, yeah, and coated can be seen. I just it just makes me think are they not allowed to say chocolate? Because they said white coating. So you can't say chocolate coated when it's not chocolate coated, it's yeah, coated in white.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe there are countries where this goes to that don't mind it, them saying it's chocolate when it's not chocolate, but this country obviously does.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yeah, yeah, because in the Dutch, not Dutch, in the German Deutsch one there, it says Weisser Glass Glacier. So I'm assuming that's like white glaze on there, which would make sense. Yeah, but anyway, packaging very similar to last week, it's very yellowy coloured with hot mango and orange flavour in orange, and it's got the popcorn on the front with the with some chili and a mango and orange on it, yeah, as well as the raccoon character that's on all of them upside down. Um, interestingly, I quite like the packaging overall. I think it's quite funny.

SPEAKER_00

I do, yeah. It's it is quite fun, it's appealing, and the raccoon's quite cute, isn't he?

SPEAKER_02

He is, and I don't yeah, I don't I don't like the stick about it because I don't understand it, and and we fear what we don't understand, so I don't get it. If if I'm right and it's because they can't say chocolate, and so they can only say choco, because then that's sort of not a thing, then okay, but somebody please tell me. Um I'm gonna have to I'm gonna have to do some research and find out.

SPEAKER_00

But I hope these aren't spicy like last week's Raspberry ones.

SPEAKER_02

No, I and I get why they say hot, that's really in, isn't it, to be a spicy version of not like hot honey. Hot honey is I wouldn't say taking the world by storm because I don't know if everyone loves it, but I don't mind hot honey. I just I like it. I like hot, yeah, but I don't it's just on everything. It is, you just don't need hot honey, hot honey, crunchy nut corn flavour. You don't need it on your cereal, you just don't need it on everything. Anyway, I'm getting distracted. Um, hot mango and orange flavour. Shall we give them a go?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, let's get on.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, let's give them a try. Wow, they're really nice.

SPEAKER_00

That really surprised me. I did not think I was gonna like that, but very tasty, very um what's the word I'm gonna say? It it was orange orangey, but not orangey.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think we said that citrusy is how we were thought to go. Citrusy is more, yeah, but definitely leaning into the orange side of citrusy and lemon sort of on there. But there was a bit of sharpness in there.

SPEAKER_00

Which that contrasted really nicely with the sweetness of the not white chocolate coating.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, it no, it really did. It's it's it really surprised both of us.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Mango and orange flavour, so it's just a flavouring on there, but yeah, it really was quite tangy and sweet, but not too sweet, and then a different type of sweetness to the coating. And the popcorn was really nice and crispy. Again, always a danger when you coat popcorn like that in something like a chocolate or anything, that it goes a bit soggy over time. But no, no, deliciously crunchy popcorn.

SPEAKER_00

I'm really surprised at how much I like that.

SPEAKER_02

I actually I'm I can't actually remember what I gave the raspberry ones last year last week, but I know it was quite high praise, and these got really I really enjoyed that. I think I quite liked it. I think I liked a little bit more those ones.

SPEAKER_00

There was definitely a lot of flavour to that, though it's not boring, it's not boring popcorn.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, you know, and that's the thing, it's quite a lot of flavour, but I found as well each piece had a which sometimes you might go, oh, that's annoying, but I think it really worked different amounts of each flavour.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So some of them were really orangey, like that kind of citrusy, you got hit with that fruity bit, and others it was just at the back. Yeah, so it was quite nice, it was a bit different each time you had a had a taste, but no, I really enjoyed that.

SPEAKER_00

It was very nice, very nice.

SPEAKER_02

It was, and then so what was the price of these though? That I can't remember what we said last time. £1.29. £1.29, wow. I know it's so it's only an 80 gram bag, which isn't the biggest of bags, admittedly. No, but uh £1.29 for a coated popcorn as well.

SPEAKER_00

It's not bad, is it? I mean, every single piece is fully coated, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

It is realistically, I know they probably tell you that's not true, but I'd say that bag is probably a decent portion, an okay portion for one person, let's be honest.

SPEAKER_00

Well, there's that many languages on there, I don't think it's gonna tell you what a portion is, please have tell me what a portion.

SPEAKER_02

No, it doesn't, it just has per hundred grams of thing on it, from what I can see. And it's only an 80 gram bag, so even that doesn't, you know, you have to you have to do a bit of maths there, and we don't do that, so just ignore that. That means that the whole bag is worth you know for one person at least. And I think that's actually not too bad a size.

SPEAKER_00

No, it's not a massive, and and quite a lot of there. We've we've had 16 pieces out of that, and it still looks like quite yeah, there's quite a bit left, and it is satisfying when you eat it, so you I don't think you'd want more than one bag of that, would you?

SPEAKER_02

No, I think you're right. I mean, well, on the right day, maybe you could polish off two, but uh for a normal person on a normal day won't be enough to take to the cinema.

SPEAKER_00

I definitely wouldn't be share, I wouldn't be sharing that. That that would be my No, I wouldn't want to share it.

SPEAKER_02

Um obviously we've had to for this serious piece of journalism, but that's the annoying thing about this, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00

We are sharing.

SPEAKER_02

I know, but we we we're getting better at it on there, but yeah, so bearing in mind 129, all all things considered, what would you score it?

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna go 8.5. It's a high score because it is a highly nice piece of popcorn.

SPEAKER_02

I know I'm gonna agree, I'm gonna go 8.5 as well, right up there for me. Really enjoyed that. I quite liked that the citrusy flavours, like with the raspberry, contrast to the chocolate and the sweetness. Yeah, yeah. And it is when you read it first, hot mango and orange flavour, camelised coated popcorn. Sounds a bit odd, but delicious.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, if we weren't doing this, there's no way in a million years I would have.

SPEAKER_02

No, exactly. I wouldn't have picked that up. I think they've advertised that I think the hot would put people off, yeah, despite the fact that there is no chili flavour, really. No, there is in a good way, because I don't want there to be really. No, it would have put me off saying hot, I'd be like, oh, you know, I like chili, it doesn't need to be there. But yeah, really, really tasty.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, lovely.

SPEAKER_02

Well, that leads us into our second popcorn, same brand, everything there, but this is the choco or chocolate coated caramelised popcorn, salted caramel flavour.

SPEAKER_00

I hope this is good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so this is very desserty and sweet toothy, isn't it? So this one is caramelised popcorn with salted caramel flavour glazed with milk coating. I'm assuming that's meant to mimic milk chocolate because it's brown, it's not milk, literally. And again, same packaging, but this one, the whole thing's orange. Um, the raccoon is on it, and you've got chocolate popcorn and caramel squares as like the the stuff that's on the front of it.

SPEAKER_00

The illustration.

SPEAKER_02

Again, it has a sticker over it, over the thing on it. So again, covering the late part of chocolate or that part of chocolate.

SPEAKER_00

Shout out to the person whose job that was.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. I mean, that must have been a a rough day, a few days at the office when that's what you do all day. Well, maybe zone out and enjoy it, but either way. But yes, other than that, it's it's basically the same. They've just changed the colours and changed the picture of from having chili and fruit on the front to having caramel squares and the the popcorn of this ilk as opposed to the white one on there.

SPEAKER_00

Well, after the last two flavours that we've enjoyed, I've got really high expectations for this.

SPEAKER_02

Worried it's going to be disappointing because of that. Yeah. Because this is the one that would normally speak to me the most.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. That is the one I would have picked up had I been in them looking for popcorn.

SPEAKER_02

Same for me. If I'd been looking for popcorn with a bit of sweetness and I'd seen this one, I would have gone for this one over the other two. I've enjoyed the other two so much, it feels like this could be a miss.

SPEAKER_00

But we'll let us down, couldn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm not gonna try not to take that into it with me.

SPEAKER_00

But going with an open mind.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly. Got to do that with these things, and we did with the others and enjoyed them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we did.

SPEAKER_02

So, yes. Well, shall we give it a go?

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Well, that was quite disappointing.

SPEAKER_02

It was, and it's sad to say, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00

It is. I mean, it was nice, but it's nowhere near as good as the other two things.

SPEAKER_02

I think that's the problem. We tried them the wrong way around, unintentionally. If we tried that one first, we probably wouldn't be disappointed, we'd just be happy the others are nicer. But for me, it was too much of just a nice sweet flavour throughout. There wasn't really much depth to it.

SPEAKER_00

It was very sweet, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_02

It was, and the the salted caramel was artificial, because we know it is. Um wasn't a bad one, but it was very subtle, and it the bit you got, you definitely it tasted artificial in a way that, again, like I say, it wasn't a bad one, like some of them, where they make you almost recoil at how artificial they taste. But it was subtle and it just wasn't really working. To be honest, because it's already caramelised popcorn, probably could have done without the salted caramel flavour and just done chocolate coated caramelised popcorn.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's a shame. It's not and the um milk coating on it was it wasn't unpleasant, but it wasn't particularly nice, it was very sweet.

SPEAKER_02

It was. I'm I'm thinking now that the issue is that they did the salted caramel flavour. If they'd just done that coating on caramelised popcorn, I think it would have been much nicer.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, probably right there. That was a shit. I'm not even it's not bad popcorn, I would still pick it up if they didn't have the other two flavours. But if you had the other flavors, I wouldn't be picking that up.

SPEAKER_02

I know that and that's the thing. We both have said this, but that's the flip to how we were at the start of this. If I'd seen those three on the shelf a couple of weeks ago, this would be the one I'd be picking. Definitely, and I'd know be none the wiser about the others. But because we tried them and thought, you know what, try something a bit different, that'd be the one I'd leave on the shelf if I could, if I had the option of the other two, I'd be picking the other two, alternating. Yeah, because they were so nice. But yeah, it's not bad. We don't want to put anyone off it and say, if you really like that thing, but I actually think the salted caramel does take away from it a little bit, and yeah, I I'd rather it was just the chocolate, the milk coating on the um on the caramelised popcorn.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's it's just a shame, isn't it? It's it is it's just not as tasty or as nice as the other two flavours.

SPEAKER_02

No, and the you know the popcorn is still crunchy, still nice. It's good texture, and the coating had the Same texture as the other ones, that's nice and all, but yeah, it just wasn't the same.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think it worked as well. It it it it was alright, but it wasn't brilliant like the other two.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. There we go. There's that that's um that bit of popcorn. What would you uh rate it then? What would you rank it with?

SPEAKER_00

I think I'm gonna go down to a six with that one. It was nice, but not that nice.

SPEAKER_02

Fair enough. I was gonna go six point five on there. I did I did think again it was nice and I'd probably pick it up if I if I was wanting that kind of thing. There aren't many options for coated popcorn. No, no, they're not. In in a nice um nice coating, especially at an affordable price like that. Yes, definitely. As I we were talking about earlier, I mentioned there's Mark Spencer's who've got a nice one there, but it's very expensive for for the amount you get. So yeah, I I I think 6.5 for me, six for you, that feels about when I look at it about where we were with it, yeah. It just feels very on there. And again, 129, so the same price as the others, and it just feels like it was a bit. I thought the others were really good value. I think that was just okay value because of the thing, isn't it? There we go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's just it's just not as tasty or as nice as the other two. That's all I can say.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and that's fair enough. Okay, we'll move on to the next item then. And we've got the Milky Bar and Aero collaboration.

SPEAKER_00

I'm looking forward to this.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, so this is literally it's an Aero Bar, so it's not Milky Bar with Aero, it's Aero with Milky Bar. So it is Aero branded, dropping it, branded by, and then Milky Bar at the bottom. So effectively it looks like they're using Milky Bar chocolate to make an Aero style bar.

SPEAKER_00

So I like a Milky Bar.

SPEAKER_02

Because it says feel the bubbles melt, and that's aero, isn't it? All the bubbles. So what does it say? Smooth white chocolate filled with white bubbles on there. There you go, that's what it says.

SPEAKER_00

I'm guessing it's all all Milky Bar, but done in the Aero style. It is what I was saying in a minute. It's all white chocolate covered, isn't it? And it's white chocolate inside.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so it'd be interesting to see because I don't think they've again I'm not an I'm not an aero historian. Um but I don't know, they've done a white chocolate arrow.

SPEAKER_00

They've done ones with a different they've done different flavoured centres, haven't they?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but white chocolate on the outside. I'll have to probably have to have a look at that. But yeah, interesting um if they haven't and they've gone for the first time with this um on there. But packaging, it's like a standard area one, but they've made everything white chocolate and white, and then they've got Milky Bar in the very iconic blue Milky Bar writing on the front underneath the LO logo on there. Reasonably pleasing is on there. Now, this is a bit more like it, although I wish they would just say this bar is one. So eight pieces is one serving.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, we've done ourselves short here.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so we've only got half a serving each. And um that's only 139 calories if anyone cares.

SPEAKER_00

Um I'm guessing that's because there's so much air in the bag.

SPEAKER_02

I think there's so much air, yeah. When you when you when you're eating air, there's not much calories in here, isn't it? So yeah, but packaging I think is quite nice, really. It is.

SPEAKER_00

I it definitely gets the point across that it's Milky Barrett. Yes, it really does combined. So I think it should be a good elaboration, this one.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, and I actually I actually think that's slightly nicer than just a normal aero. Sometimes the aero one looks a bit cheap with yeah the colours, but actually I think that looks quite quite nice. Um on that. And the Milky Bar writing, the blue Milky Bar writing is quite iconic, isn't it? It is in in confectionery. Um so yeah, so the size of the bar it is oh no, that that's that's the code. There it is, hidden under the tab. 90 grams. 90 grams. 90 gram bar, and how much was this?

SPEAKER_00

It was £1.29.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, so the same as the popcorn. In home bargains, this was. Right, so in home bargains, but same as the popcorn though.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yeah, same price, 90 grams, and you get only 80 grams of popcorn.

SPEAKER_02

I was gonna say you get less popcorn, but I appreciate the popcorn has more processes because you've got to make the popcorn.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Caramelise it, flavour it, and then chocolate coat it. But yeah, that's for that size bar. Now I know because of the air, it is lighter. I think if you're getting a dairy milk or something, these are now, or they the 110, is it?

SPEAKER_00

115, I think it is.

SPEAKER_02

115, yeah, grand bars. Is it's competing in that category, I'm guessing. But 129 feels quite reasonable without trying to for there. For it's a reasonable size bar, isn't it? Um, even if it is full of air.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I I did check online because I was thinking I wouldn't be able to get them in home bargains because I'd already been into home bargains and they didn't have them. And um online in Tesco's they were selling them for two pounds. So that I do think home bargains is a bit is a bit of a bargain, let's let's be honest.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, so that is starting to push up at the price, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00

I would never pick one up at that. Well, I would have done for this show just to try it, but normally I wouldn't pick one up for two pounds.

SPEAKER_02

I agree. I don't I think £150 or less is why I'd be picking that kind of thing up, especially when you don't know if you like it, you don't want to risk it, two pounds or that.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I don't think I'm gonna have a pop.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I know I I think again it's it's a bit it's a bit of a thing to say, isn't it? To say, oh, if you don't like it, I mean it's error, it's milky bar. I like them both separate. You know, I probably like them the same, so there we go. But yeah, so we should we give it a try?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Well, that was really nice, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_02

That was absolutely delicious.

SPEAKER_00

A lighter, fluffier, milky bar. Just delicious.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's a really good point, actually. Yeah, I it it whether it was just white chocolate era, whether it was milky bar, it all worked together.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And as you say, actually, it felt like I got more, like you do with an area because it spreads quite well than if you got a milky bar. But all that nice milky bar flavour all over the mouth. It was lovely.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely delicious.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I I thoroughly enjoyed that. And I that is something I would especially at 129, I'd I'd pick that up again.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, get yourself around to Home Bargains and get some more of them. So I don't know if they're gonna be around.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, it doesn't say new on the packaging, but often when the slightly non-standard bars make it to Home Bargains, BM, those places, it it often has meant they're on the way out of the the general supermarkets, doesn't it? But yeah, two pounds I think is well actually now I've tried it, I'd probably pay that, I'd probably pay it if I wanted that thing because it does it better than than anything else. So yeah, that was really I really enjoyed that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I love a Milky Bar and now I love an Aero Milky Bar.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I know to be honest, I will say I think I like it more than a normal Aero.

SPEAKER_00

Really?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that actually I'm I'm gonna say I'm not the biggest fan of a normal plain Aero. I would usually buy the mint one, I think, or they do uh like a toffee one or a caramel one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I I would pick one of those up over the normal plain aero, but yeah, I would pick that up.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I like the hazelnut one they've been doing, that's nice. But yeah, that one's probably my favourite now, Aero on there, and I do quite like the lightness, you know, on there, the way it melts on your tongue differently. I do I do think they've got a bit of a unique product there, and that is an excellent addition. I hope they keep that going for a while. Oh, I do, yeah. That's very nice. And so, how would you rate it?

SPEAKER_00

Oh would you score it? I think because it was so nice. I'm gonna go nine.

SPEAKER_02

And you know what? It's funny because I I was gonna say I'm gonna go for a nine as well. Yeah, I really, really enjoyed that. That was lovely, it was delicious. Um yeah, I think that'll be the one we're fighting over. Who gets the rest of it? Make sure you bought it, so we're you I like your reasoning there. That's the on-mic reasoning. We'll get into the debate afterwards.

SPEAKER_00

It could get physical over here, exactly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, if you don't hear from me next week, the podcast stops, you know why. Um, but no, thoroughly enjoyed that. Definitely worth it. And then that brings us into our next one, which is Milky Bar themed as well. Milky Bar Crunchy Pops.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, I'm guessing it's like a Maltese covered in Milky Bar.

SPEAKER_02

Do you know what? Funny enough, I I hadn't even thought I was like, I'm trying to work out what it was. Because, and I'll say this is the only time, it's a similar issue to the Aero Bar, but Aero and Milky Bar, you understand what that is, and it's actually the picture on the front, till you unless you get it in the right light, it's really hard to understand what's there. Oh, right, okay because I mean it just looks like a ball that's been opened, but I think you are right.

SPEAKER_00

Um, a mob no, I think they're about the same size as a bit more uh non-uniform.

SPEAKER_02

Some of them are bigger, some of them are. But these say crispy cereal balls and a vanilla flavoured filling covered with white chocolate.

SPEAKER_00

Or maybe there's something else other than just the crispy bit inside then. Wow. These were let me just find the price. So these were £1.49 for a 90 gram bag.

SPEAKER_02

So in the Aero bar, there is on the front a cross section, like a lot of the chocolate bars do, of a piece of chocolate. Now it does blend quite a lot into the Milky Bar white chocolate themed thing. You can't really see it, but I think Aero and Milky Bar stand up, you know what they are. Yeah. So you don't even need to look at it, you know what it is. When someone says, Oh, it's a Milky Bar Aero or an Aero Milky Bar, you kind of get an image in your head. These Milky Bar Crunchy Pops didn't know what to expect, so I do think that might have been a bit of a mistake because they've gone for a very Milky Bar themed colour scheme, but the Crunchy Pop is a cereal ball thing, which is a yellowy white colour with yellowy white chocolate round it on a yellowy white background. It's very clear then. It's not the clearest in the world. When you see it a bit closer, you can see that the the yellowy white of the crut cereal ball is is a different colour on there in the cross section. But yeah, I think that it you have to take a second look to understand. I don't think I don't also not sure I like the name Crunchy Pops. No, I don't know why.

SPEAKER_00

It's just it is very cereal reminiscent though, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

It does sound like a cereal, you're right. Maybe that's what it is, like a breakfast cereal on there. No, and it says crispy cereal balls and a vanilla flavoured filling.

SPEAKER_00

Now I'm thinking it's like a cream centre, crispy outside, and a chocolate and milky bar coating.

SPEAKER_02

See that's what that says to me, and again, it's you're not getting that from the picture.

SPEAKER_00

No. Let me have a look.

SPEAKER_02

No, you have a you have a look at that. Try and get it in the light as well.

SPEAKER_00

No, I'm not. You're right, it look just looks like white chocolate coating or milky bar coating and a crunchy poppy middle.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You're not getting any vanilla cream centre, are you?

SPEAKER_02

Not that you can see in that. Again, it it it could well be present.

SPEAKER_00

Now, this is a serving is 14 pieces. Again, we shortchanged ourselves.

SPEAKER_02

We've massively shortchanged ourselves, huh?

SPEAKER_00

I'm guessing there's not many servings in that.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, actually, yeah, that's a good point, because we've together we haven't got one serving, just under. We only get about three servings in a pack.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But 145 calories, again for anyone who cares, per 14 pieces. Um, on there. The bag is 90 grams. On there, yeah. The the bag is 90 grams. So yeah. How much was this then? They're more expensive than the bar. Now I get that. More processes, more different bits in there. Not one, but it's got a lot to live up to. Like we basically got that a nine and it's 20p more. So this gotta be good to live to justify that. You know, on that. They are new, so maybe they haven't had time to come down in the era. Like we said, it was new to us finding it, but perhaps it's on the way out. But they they brand it new, don't they?

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, these are new, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So, shall we give it a go?

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I didn't like them at first, or wasn't sure at first, but I quite like them by the end of it.

SPEAKER_00

I did. I'll tell you what, it reminded me of. When you're when you were younger and we used to make rice crispy cakes and melt your chocolate and stir your rice krispies in and put them into little cake moulds. That's what it reminded me of.

SPEAKER_02

Flavors wise, yes, I get that. And I guess that's where the cereal now they look they're a bit more like Maltesers are pretty uniform, aren't they? Like all the way across. And these one, these are bigger and smaller.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, different, definitely, definitely different sizes, definitely different sizes.

SPEAKER_02

And I think Maltesas is the closest comparison in terms of the delivery system for the for the food, which is yeah, it's a coated, crunchy ball thing. Um, on there, very different. Uh, the cereal is very different to the malt biscuit that you get in the Maltese, very different. I found uh on there, almost like a harder crunch, not smooth. I liked it. Yeah, still crunchy, which was nice, very crunchy still, but like I say, it was a bit more of a it gave, and then that was the crunch on there, and I really enjoyed them by the end of the first one. I was a bit unsure. Now, again, it says vanilla flavour filling, unless the cereal is flavoured.

SPEAKER_00

Did you detect anything other than just I did think the coating was slightly thicker than it than on a mold?

SPEAKER_02

Definitely, you're right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the coating is thicker, which I do think do think it goes nice with the the crunch.

SPEAKER_02

Really did, yeah, I agree.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was it's definitely a thicker coating, but yeah, I didn't get any vanilla flavour from the um from the cereal.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I think there was a little bit of a other flavour to milky bar, it didn't taste like a milky bar exactly.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

So I do think there was some vanilla somewhere, but looking at the ingredients breakdown, it says that the crispy cereal balls are 19%, and the vanilla flavour filling is 35.9%. And I I definitely did not get that through with the white chocolate being only 44%.

SPEAKER_00

I wonder if it's the is it like underneath the white chocolate, and then the vanilla and then the chocolate. Maybe that's what accounts for the thickness of the coating. Maybe if I was going to say anything about the cereal filling, it it reminded me a lot of um crunching up cornflakes crushing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was definitely it was definitely that kind of corn cereal that sort of colour as well, isn't it? Yeah, it's that yellowy, yellowy white, orangey, yellowy white colour sort of thing on there. And yeah, I I maybe that's what it is. Maybe there was a a layer of it because it's not throughout the crunchy bit, it's not like that, and there's not a centre which has a vanilla filling, yeah. So maybe it is either throughout the chocolate or wrapped and then the chocolate laid over it to make, as you say, account for how thick it was. But overall, I quite enjoyed them. I I don't know how much I'd pick them up, and at 150 I don't think they're better than the the Milky War.

SPEAKER_00

No, I I would pick the Aero up again. I don't think I would pick those up again. They were nice, I enjoyed them, but they weren't my favourite. I I preferred the um aero bar.

SPEAKER_02

That's fair enough, yeah. And and I I definitely was the same with that. And so, with all that in mind, what would you score them?

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna go seven.

SPEAKER_02

Seven.

SPEAKER_00

They were nice, but I don't think I'd pick them up again.

SPEAKER_02

It's fair enough. I'm gonna go for a 6.5 because again, nice, but I I don't think I'd pick them up again. Uh it's hard because I think Maltese are such classic and they do white chocolate Maltesers now as well, often.

SPEAKER_00

See, they missed a trick there. Why didn't Milky Bar go and coat a malt go and coat a Malteser?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, if they'd done a collaboration, it would have been Oh, I think that would have been better, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That would have been, you know, epic, wouldn't it?

SPEAKER_02

And this is a different take with the cereal as opposed to the multi biscuit thing um on there. But yeah, I and I I like I say I enjoyed them. I just it's hard because if you're in that mood, again it's hard to beat a Malteser, isn't it? So you go that route on there. So they've got a lot of overcoming to do. But yeah, I thought they were nice, just nice. Yeah, just nice. That was it. Yeah, so 6.5.

SPEAKER_00

Very sweet. They were very sweet.

SPEAKER_02

They are very sweet.

SPEAKER_00

The crunchy is nice because it it sort of takes away a bit from the too sweetness of it, but it does, it gives you another texture to go with.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Um, but yeah, I think 6.57 is just very fair with them in terms of nice, but that's all we can say, really, on that end.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, wouldn't rush out and buy them.

SPEAKER_02

No, exactly. Well, with that, that is the end of the tasting grounds. We now move into our final segment, which is Debbie's fun fact.

SPEAKER_00

Debbie's fun facts. And my I've only got one fact for you this week.

SPEAKER_02

Uh so last week, everyone who listened um is aware you're spoiled. There was two two facts, wasn't there? But no, we're back, we're on a diet again this week. We're back to one fact. One fun fact with Debbie. So, mum, what is the fun fact this week?

SPEAKER_00

Well, the fun fact this week is to do with the weather being so hot and everyone's having ice cream and ice lollies.

SPEAKER_02

Also, it's not very fun the weather being this hot.

SPEAKER_00

But um, I'm going to talk about the brain freeze hack.

SPEAKER_02

Brain freeze hack. Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So that painful brain freeze that happens when something cold touches the roof of your mouth when you're eating ice cream or ice lollies.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um this is because the coldness causes blood vessels to constrict and tense up trapping blood in your brain.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't know that.

SPEAKER_02

No, I'd never looked at it. I had brain freeze, but never really thought to investigate it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And um this extra blood is what causes the brain pain. And the how to get around this is to um press your warm tongue against the roof of your mouth.

SPEAKER_02

So I'm guessing that this is something to do with warming those blood vessels up. Is it all right?

SPEAKER_00

So they um so they don't tense up or they release the tension or something. Yeah, they they don't deconstrict whether they're and allow the blood flow back to normal so the blood can lose the brain so it stops the pain.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. I didn't know because I had I will say I had heard before about doing that, but I didn't know why or anything like that. But that's interesting. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

That is why.

SPEAKER_02

And that's what it is, it's restricting the blood. Makes sense. Cold restricts them up and then they get warmed up, lets it out again. But yeah, it's amazing that just uh the blood being restricted coming out of your brain a little bit caused that much pain that quickly.

SPEAKER_00

I know it's strange, isn't it? Because you everyone knows about brain freeze, but I didn't know why it happens.

SPEAKER_02

I thought it was just because I was shoveling a whole tub in about a minute. So I thought I thought that's fine. But no, it turns out you can get it if you yeah, so effectively you get too much, almost like I guess touching the top of your mouth.

SPEAKER_00

It's all to do with the roof of your mouth, so if you put your tongue up there, although if you've just shoveled a tub of ice cream, I don't suppose your tongue's gonna be very warm, is it?

SPEAKER_02

It's true, true. Uh so that might not work then. No. So again, your mileage may vary with this, and we cannot be held um liable if you try this and injure yourself.

SPEAKER_00

And again, there's a lot of people who haven't got a brain who aren't gonna ever suffer. Exactly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, some people are thinking brain freeze, what's that? What's that? Um on there. And as I said, we this is not medical advice. If you try it and your tongue gets stuck there, you yeah, and that's on you. We are just um trying to help out fellow snackers um in their in their quest uh to try all the ice cream. So yes. But yeah, but I didn't realise that that's what it was. No. Again, something that happens to most people, but never bit never I don't know why I normally look at most things, but yeah, never looked that up.

SPEAKER_00

There you go.

SPEAKER_02

Well, thank you for that. Well, that was a fun fact. Well yeah, and um, and so hopefully some helpful advice for people.

SPEAKER_00

Let's hope so. Okay, if it works for you, please let us know.

SPEAKER_02

Let us know. Yeah, if you try it and it works, let us if you try it and it doesn't work, also let us know. I want to know if it doesn't work, yeah. Let us know. But um, yeah, so thank you for that fact. And that rounds up another week uh on the the Snacks What You Get podcast. But uh yeah, one more week down. So I think this is a week eight, is it eight, eight episodes? Eighth episode, wow. I'm still enjoying it. Yeah, so thank you again, everybody, for listening. If you want to contact us, there's the fan mail button um in the description of the podcast and show notes, and that you can let us know from there. That comes directly to unbox, and also there is just the main email snackswhatyouget at gmail.co.uk. So don't wrong every time. Apologies. Snackswhatyouget at gmail.com. We haven't paid for it, so we're not getting any fancy.co.uk there, but snackswhatyget at gmail.com, and again, that is in the show notes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it would be lovely to hear from you if you want to get in touch.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, whether that's recommendations or feedback.

unknown

Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

So, yes, thank you again, and you'll hear from us next week.

SPEAKER_00

See you next week.

SPEAKER_02

All right.
