In this episode we have a selection of snacks including the next ice cream in a new selection from Lidl.

SPEAKER_00

Hello everybody. Welcome to Snacks What You Get, the weekly podcast where mother and son review snacks and discuss what they've eaten this week. I'm Chris, the son, and this is Debbie. The mum. Hello everybody.

SPEAKER_02

Hello, welcome back.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome back to another week of Snacks What You Get. Just wanted to say uh thank you everyone for messages we've received. I've now linked up the Spotify, so I've got Spotify messages um on there. And to let everyone know that any recommendations, we are noting them, and we will also do a shout out if we know. So on Spotify at the moment, a lot of people have still got their generic username that's done by their which is about 20 characters long of just letters. So apologies if we don't shout that out. We will tell say it's from Spotify if we don't know the name or where it's from, um, on there. But yeah, we've still got the email, snackswhatyget at gmail.com, and um you can still send the fan mail thing uh where it says send mail in the show notes. Yes, great. So shall we dive in? Yes, go on then. Start this week with as always with new bites.

SPEAKER_02

New bites.

SPEAKER_01

New bites, new bites, new new bites, bites.

SPEAKER_00

So, what's your new bites this week?

SPEAKER_02

Wow, mine was a bargain. It was a yellow sticker from Marks and Spencer's.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Spending a lot of time in the new Marks.

SPEAKER_00

I was just gonna say, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Can't be helped, gotta be done, hasn't it?

SPEAKER_00

I still haven't been yet.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well wife Carly, she's been twice. Yeah, twice. Um I haven't been yet. She's been with friends, so and well and me, yes. Well friends, but yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well, this time um it was Dave and I that went. Nice and we bought the pizza meal deal for our tea.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we had that one time, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

No, we didn't buy the pizza meal deal, I tell the night. We bought the curry meal deal.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, but um I picked up for dessert the Sicilian lemon cheesecake slices.

SPEAKER_00

Sounds nice.

SPEAKER_02

Bargain, they were they were reduced from four pounds down to two pounds sixty.

SPEAKER_00

Very nice.

SPEAKER_02

They uh do you know what? They were very nice. They were really nice. And it what does it say?

SPEAKER_00

It's quite a big um well that's quite a reasonable discount, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I thought that was pretty good for Marks and Spencer's. It says um luscious and zesty, just squeeze the moment. I like that.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, nice, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

A bit playful, bit playful. Um a perfect pair of sweet and creamy Sicilian lemon cheesecake slices packed with British whipping cream.

SPEAKER_00

And was it nice?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah. It sounds it, so I was hoping I I I like lemony flavoured things, but this was nice biscuity base, nice creamy cheesecake, and then like a lemon topping, very zesty lemon topping on top. Very nice, very nice. Obviously, not not massive slices, I suppose they'd better say one slice is a portion, aren't they? Really?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you you would have thought they would.

SPEAKER_02

Serves two, one slice is a portion. Oh, few. Thank goodness for that. Can you imagine trying to share?

SPEAKER_00

When we get into the world where they start telling you that those slices are now two port two two portions per slice, that's yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That's all wrong.

SPEAKER_00

That's gonna be wrong.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but yeah, no, very, very nice. So so nice that I I don't think I'd I'd um yeah, I think I would probably pick them up at full price for that price, you know, four pounds is two pounds a slice, but it's a very nice cheesecake. I know you can get like a whole cheesecake for four pounds. I don't think they do whole cheesecake for that.

SPEAKER_00

So that's that's where I I it wasn't on my list because you know we try lots of things, but I I tried some cheesecake slides from that. I think it's called the English Cheesecake Company, they're a brand you see in the supermarkets, and there was ones reduced like the same way you had, but they're normally like £4, £4.50 for two slices. They've just released some full-size ones that are six pounds, six pound fifty. And you think the difference in price for that, you're just like I'd be buying a full one. You would wouldn't you, realistically, if they're not reduced, the other ones.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but the trouble is you then have a quarter each, don't you? Half each, but yes, uh you start off with a quarter, and then if you go back more room in your pudding tummy, then you go and get the other quarter.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, yeah. No, that that's fair. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But yeah, thoroughly recommended. Very nice Sicilian lemon cheesecake slices from Marks and Spencer's. What did you have this week?

SPEAKER_00

So my new bites this week, something I've uh tried this week was um Lidl. And I've actually slightly cheated in that I've gone for two things to talk about. Oh because they're both from the Lidl bakery. Oh, which yes, normally we um everyone raves about it, and usually quite rightly so. So I had the pistachio and chocolate tiffin on there, yeah, and the eat and mess donut, eat and mess donut in there. Okay, the pistachio and chocolate tiffin was 99 pence for quite frankly, quite a small square.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you just their brownies. I mean, their brownies are good, but they're very small.

SPEAKER_00

It's very small, yeah, it was very small. Um, on there, 99p. I still begrudge I I think that was a bit much for that, to be honest. Um, because if you were to box them and sell four, you'd be talking four quid for that, is what they'd want.

SPEAKER_02

And you think that's yeah, and they wouldn't sell them in their in their boxed cake department, they would be £2.49 for four. Exactly, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So it seemed like a lot for 99p for that. And then the ETMS donut was £1.29. Now I was quite disappointed with both of them.

SPEAKER_01

Oh to be honest.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the pistachio and chocolate, the pistachio didn't really taste of anything, the bit on it there, and it just didn't really feel like a tiffin on there. It felt like they combined too much, and it was it was like a brownie with some crunchy bits in, which some people could argue is a tiffin, but I feel like you need a bit more the chocolate layer and the the crunchy bits need to be a bit more prominent than was there. It just not enough crunch in there, not enough crunch, even though it looks like there's like a whole layer. I think it'd just gone soft um being too exposed to like the chocolate and everything on there, and it just didn't really taste it much.

SPEAKER_02

See, a tiffin is a no-bake item. A tiffin is where you melt a load of chocolate down, put all your bits in it, and put it in the fridge.

SPEAKER_00

There you go, so odd to be in the bakery.

SPEAKER_02

Ought to be in the bakery.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. So the bakery plus no-bake items should change the name. Um you heard it here first. Exactly, yes. But yeah, um, it just wasn't very nice. Well, it just didn't really taste of anything. And then when you think how small it was and how it just yeah, not not wasn't impressed.

SPEAKER_02

Was it two mouthfuls at most?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, at most, yeah, if if that really is mouthfuls, one. Um Careful Bites, two, two, yeah. Yeah, and then the ETMS donut, again, just wasn't great, just not impressed. The it's it it's like a a well, it's a donut. It's covered in like pink icing, has a bit of strawberry through it, but there wasn't much in there. Um I think it's just icing. I think yeah, I think it's just flavour, yeah. And the icing is pink icing. I think it was just flavour.

SPEAKER_02

Is there jam in the middle?

SPEAKER_00

No, they had like a like a soft, you know, like a whipped meringue, but it's not set. You know, that's a bit like marshmallow fluff kind of thing. On top and inside, it was like coming out. The donut was almost like if you've taken a normal donut, instead of a ring donut, you've just like pressed your thumb into the middle to sink the top, but only in the middle, yeah, on there, and the rest of it's up, so it's like a cup for it, so it didn't come out the bottom, but they filled that with this. I'd say it was like marshmallow fluff, but I think it's meant to be meringue, thinking eat and mess on there.

SPEAKER_02

Um see when you say eat and mess, you think of crunchy meringue, don't you? And strawberry bits. And those things strawberry jam and crunchy meringue on top.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and there wasn't that. I mean, there was a cr crunchy bits, there was some crunchy bits on there. Uh it just all wasn't very impressive. And then that leads me on to the bigger issue I have with the little bakery. Oh, here we go. As you're saying on there, is that it's right at the beginning, which means it's the first thing that goes into your trolley, to your bags, whatever. And what is a donut? Hell of a squishy thing. So either you have to constantly play Tetris and Jenga, uh, sorry, Tetris, and and you're just moving it around your trolley to wherever you don't want to squish it in there, or you put it at the bottom and get it squished. And ours, because we have bags, ours fell to the side when we'd done it. And so by the time I'd paid for it, it's like a pancake.

SPEAKER_02

Oh dear.

SPEAKER_00

And then the other issue is that they've clearly run out of the nice bags.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, the paper.

SPEAKER_00

So they had the oh yes, I think.

SPEAKER_02

The green food bags.

SPEAKER_00

Green food bags, and they are awful.

SPEAKER_02

They're plastic, aren't they? And they stick to everything.

SPEAKER_00

They stick, they stick to themselves, you can't open them crazy. But the donut went in and pulling it out, half of the top came off of it, and the thing, because it just sticks to it, and it's impossible not to. So I then carefully like reconstructed it, which took a hell of an effort by turning the bag inside out and like scraping it all into right place. But I was just, I was like, I can't literally half the topping come off of it. Oh, you don't want to miss any topping, do you? I was trying to actually get what the flavour was, like trying to understand it. Um, and yeah, I think it was poorly executed the whole thing. And to be honest, they all looked a bit like they'd been dropped in you know, in situ, let alone by the end of it when it'd been tossed about the bag. So, yeah, bakery, put it at the end so that I don't um squash everything in it. Um, and also any hot items, then, or warmer, you know, fresh out the oven items. Oh, they're gonna, you know, if they're at the end, you have a chance of when you're eating it in your car, stuffing the car, but still being warm. By the time you've walked past all the fridges, everything like that. Just yeah, to me, it feels very un-German of lit of a company to do that.

SPEAKER_02

Everything else is quite well done, but that that is I do feel that the bakeries are at the front of all of them.

SPEAKER_00

They are, yeah. If I remember, but that's what I mean. It feels a bit like not the place for them, but maybe that's just me. No, it's the the company that's wrong. But yeah, so that's my wrong. Can be. I don't feel I am on this. I feel strongly the other way. But anyway, that's my new bites for this week. Not impressed with those bits from the Little Bakery.

SPEAKER_02

That's two disappointments from Liddells, not.

SPEAKER_00

I know, that's why I bundled them because it's rare, but there we go.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, fair enough.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Well, after that leads us into our main segment, which is the tasting grounds. It's the tasting grounds. So this week on the tasting grounds, we have a new triple threat from Morrisons or Cletherer of Morrison's. Yeah, I should say um just yeah, a triple offering from Morrisons that are all new. So I think it was last week, was it, or the week before? In the last couple of weeks, they've launched three new chocolate bars.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

On there, say new on them, launched evidence. So we have a Jaffa Orange milk chocolate.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, sounds good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, a custard cream milk chocolate.

SPEAKER_02

Not sure about that one, but intrigued.

SPEAKER_00

And peanut butter and jelly milk chocolate.

SPEAKER_02

See, I'm not sure about that one. I know you used like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a child, as we would say in the UK.

SPEAKER_00

So we'll get onto that bit then.

SPEAKER_02

I'm sure it's gonna work really well, actually.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, nice sweet flavours that can often go with being there. So that that's that's the bulk of our offering. The three three out of the four of those three bars, picked them up this week. And then the other offering, the other thing we have this week, is one of the other flavours of the double paradise ice creams from Lidl, isn't it? From so the one, the cherry one we had last week. That was really good. Really, really liked. This is the nut and caramel flavour.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I'm hoping this is good as well.

SPEAKER_00

I'm hoping this is good, but that'll have to be last from we take it out of freezer. So we're starting this week with the Jaffa Orange milk chocolate.

SPEAKER_02

I like chocolate orange, I'm not gonna lie.

SPEAKER_00

I will say before we get into it, these are bizarrely advertised all over social media. I went into the store and they were on the very bottom shelf, and they were all fake, they were all they'd fallen forwards. So you couldn't, unless you picked them up, you wouldn't see what they were, but they were they were tucked out the way. It was almost like they had a big banner advertising them, but they made it really difficult for you to find. So bizarre. I would have thought they'd be front and centre.

SPEAKER_02

I'm guessing the store staff really like them, and they've hidden them on the bottom shelf so we can't find them.

SPEAKER_00

That's a very good point. I hadn't actually considered that, but maybe that's what it was. But that's what they did. Because their own brand, plain chocolate, you know, the way they do that whole nut plain dark. They were higher up and more in the centre, they were. These were literally bottom shelves. Yeah. On it, just uh not bottom shelf.

SPEAKER_02

Somebody thought I like these, I'm hiding these.

SPEAKER_00

All three. They were still really liked them.

SPEAKER_02

Oh this is a good side, I feel.

SPEAKER_00

But anyway, we digress onto the the Jaffa orange milk chocolate.

SPEAKER_02

It's a nice bright package.

SPEAKER_00

It is a bright package. So this says a zesty orange jelly layer covered in milk chocolate. Oh, seems simple. Oh no, what's it say on the back?

SPEAKER_02

What's not to like?

SPEAKER_00

Milk chocolate with orange flavour fillets. So, yes, what's not to like with that? It just sounds nice, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_02

It does sound nice, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

If you like that sort of thing.

SPEAKER_02

What I do, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Now the packaging on all three of them is they've done quite a clever design, which all three of them have a sort of loud design on them, don't they? But they're very relevant to what they are. So the Jeffrey Orange one here has these like segments, like lots of squares, but within the square is lots of quarter circles or half circles, but they're done in orange colours, and some of them show like orange segments in them. If you see that, yes, yes, yes, it's quite effective, actually, isn't it?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's nice and bright, catches the eye if it was placed at eye level, I'm guessing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I quite like that actually on there. And um, yeah, it looks nice. Now they are telling us that two squares is a serving.

SPEAKER_02

Two squares is a serving, and yet when you across the bar, it's three squares.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Makes it slightly awkward, then doesn't it?

SPEAKER_00

That does, yeah. One serving becomes a bit awkward to do, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_02

How big is the bar?

SPEAKER_00

The bar is 165 grams.

SPEAKER_02

So slightly smaller than yes. And how much was it?

SPEAKER_00

Just realised that I haven't written that down with me, so I was just checking it.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

On my phone there.

SPEAKER_02

They're all the same size, the bars, they are.

SPEAKER_00

All the bars are the same size.

SPEAKER_02

Um you've got the chocolate orange one open. And I can you can smell the orange as soon as you pick it up, can't you?

SPEAKER_00

You can. It's definitely one of the benefits. Right, two pounds a bar they are.

SPEAKER_02

That's not too bad, is it?

SPEAKER_00

It's in the price range what you expect now.

SPEAKER_02

It's a nice treat, yeah. Not a bad price.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I th I think it is the equivalent to roughly what you'd expect the Dairy Milk of Galaxy plain version to be. There's special ones which have flavours like this, I think, a little bit more.

SPEAKER_02

So is the chocolate orange flavoured, or is it just milk chocolate and then orange?

SPEAKER_00

It's just milk chocolate with this orange jelly, orange filling on there. So that being said, I mean two pounds for £165. Again, it I don't know, looking at that, I'm thinking that's about right for what you'd expect. For a for a plain chocolate bar, a bit much. But yeah, for these special flavours, yeah, there. So shall we give it a go?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yes. That was a real treat.

SPEAKER_00

It was, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_02

It was it was delicious. The orange was sharp but sweet, and the chocolate was really creamy. And you got both flavours separately. I got the hit of the orange first, and as that mellowed out, the creamy chocolate took over. Absolutely lovely.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I was um very impressed with that as well. I don't I'm not a huge chocolate orange fan. I like chocolate orange, and at Christmas, I love a terry's chocolate orange, and I'll always eat the chocolate orange um in a selection box. But I I rarely go, oh, do you know I'll pick up a you know something that is a chocolate orange flavour because it it's quite everywhere. And actually, I was thinking I'd pick that up again. I enjoyed that.

SPEAKER_02

I would, it was really I mean, I am a particular fan of chocolate orange, I love a Terry's chocolate orange, and my favourite sweet treat bag-wise is the Capri's Chocolate Orange Buttons. I love them, but this is also very nice, and I would definitely, if I was in Morrison's looking for a sweet treat, I might be I would be very drawn to this.

SPEAKER_00

So the orange filling they say makes up 20% of it, and the third ingredient on there is orange juice from concentrate. Ah, and flavouring is one of the lowest down on there, it doesn't even say it's orange fray, it just says flavouring. But I I think that's that explains it because it's a really nice orangey, like sweet, orangey, like um yeah, thing in the middle. I didn't think this is artificial, which I do often with some of the own brand chocolate orange, and obviously sometimes if there's no liquid or anything and you know it's just a chocolate bar, they often have to make it artificial in there, either for cost or for practicality. But no, I I was impressed with that.

SPEAKER_02

You almost make it sound healthy, like with all that orange juice in there, it could be one of your five a day.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I mean, it doesn't say that, but if you eat enough of it, you've got to get enough orange in there.

SPEAKER_02

That's the way my mind's going.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, but that's what I'm saying. If you eat enough of the bar, surely at some point you're gonna get enough orange juice to help you with vitamin C. So it is a very nice, but and also strong orange flavour, so it is, it's good, but it doesn't hang around like an artificial one does, which you can which makes sense now, knowing that it's mostly not. And yeah, I was impressed with that. So that in mind, two pounds, 165 gram bar, which oh I probably should have done this before. We've had two rows of one. Oh no, it's a bit funny shaped, isn't it? One squares, so six rows of this on three on each one, so eighteen squares, nine portions technically, nine portions um in there.

SPEAKER_02

I I it's really nice. I I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't think two pounds is too bad of a price. No, I'm gonna go eight.

SPEAKER_00

Very respectable, very respectable, and I'm gonna go for a 7.5, and it's purely because it's not chocolate orange isn't like on my list of favourites, but I would pick that up again. Yeah, yeah, which again, like I say, chocolate orange, other than a terry chocolate orange at Christmas, I'm not normally you know choosing to pick one up, but it was very nice.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, it was delicious.

SPEAKER_00

Well done, Morrison's on the first count.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well done Morrison's.

SPEAKER_00

So the next one we're gonna try is the custard cream milk chocolate. So again, from the same range um that they've brought in, all new.

SPEAKER_02

It's different, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, so this one is it says custard cream, milk chocolate, vanilla cream and biscuit crunch layer covered in milk chocolate.

SPEAKER_02

So almost chocolate-covered custard cream, but in a chocolate bar form.

SPEAKER_00

So yes, a milk chocolate with a vanilla filling and a salted butter cookie. Oh salted butter cookies. Yeah, it sort of suggests that it's a layer of biscuit, but then the photo the picture of it, the cross section, doesn't look like a layer of biscuit, just it smells really nice. So, yeah, when I opened the packet, yeah, instantly got that smell.

SPEAKER_02

Got that vanilla biscuity smell.

SPEAKER_00

It's that vanilla biscuity smell smells delicious. Yes, it does. Now the packaging is in a very similar way, but instead of like the quadrants where you've got thing on there, the pattern is very much like one of the patterns you get on a custard cream. Yes. So again, anyone who knows a custard cream, and for those of you don't, um, the biscuit on a custard cream is like a wavy pattern, isn't it? It's got pattern on it, it's got a traditional pattern on it. Yeah, traditional one, and this is obviously it's a repeating pattern of a small section of that over and over again. It's very yellow.

SPEAKER_02

I don't feel it's as eye-catching as the orange one.

SPEAKER_00

No, I don't like it as much as the orange one. I think that's a lot that that leans into the slightly gaudiness a little bit to make it effective. This one I think just looks a bit cheap. Yeah, you know, I know what you're saying. With the plain white square which just says, you know, custard cream chocolate in it. And that it just, yeah, I think it looks a bit cheaper. I don't like the packaging as much. Um but yeah, again, 165 grams, we've said all the same, and two pounds for the bar.

SPEAKER_02

Um still not a bad price for a nice premium filled chocolate bar.

SPEAKER_00

For filled chocolate bar, it seems to be yeah, about right on that. And they have also said two squares for a portion, which is good. Well, this has got more calories, 100 calories per portion on this versus 93 on the orange.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I keep telling you the orange.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, this this one, it's that smell.

SPEAKER_02

It does smell it smells very good.

SPEAKER_00

If you like it's very sweet smelling, I will give you that on there, and then the chocolate itself, though we didn't mention this on the terry chocolate orange, they all look the same, by the way, from the outside for the listeners. They do, which is a square has then got like a 3D, two 3D triangles on the top of it, creating almost like two segments within the segment, but they don't split like that, it doesn't go all the way through, it's just like a bit of a geometric yeah, geometric pattern on top, yeah. Yeah, of depending on each square, the alternate orientation. Quite thick chocolate when you look quite thick, yeah, and obviously the the bars it's got that pattern on it, yeah, and it does have some cross sections of them on the front as well, so everyone's aware. But yeah, I don't think we could say too much more on it. Should we just give them a

SPEAKER_02

Let's crack on.

SPEAKER_00

Well, that was disappointing.

SPEAKER_02

It was, it was, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, it smelt better than it tasted.

SPEAKER_02

It definitely did. It smelt good.

SPEAKER_00

It smelt really good, and but the taste was just sweet, and there was barely any crunch in it.

SPEAKER_02

It needed more crunch, it needed more biscuit in there, didn't it?

SPEAKER_00

I know, yeah, it really did. I know they talk about when they say custard cream, milk chocolate, it it's probably trying to invoke a flavour, but it's hard to separate a custard cream from the fact that it's mostly biscuit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then to get this where they've they've attempted an inconsistent crunch. Some of my pieces, out of the three, one had an okay amount of like bits in there, one had a few more than that, and then one just I'm pretty sure didn't have any in it.

SPEAKER_02

No, it was yeah, not in not enough crunch, and it was just so incredibly sweet that the the the vanilla cream and the chocolates just sort of merged into one. You didn't couldn't identify the flavours separately. Well, really.

SPEAKER_00

I would have said that really the only flavour was that vanilla. Once you got a bit of it.

SPEAKER_02

It was overpowering, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you didn't have any chocolate flavour at that point, did you? It was just all that, yeah, that vanilla was too much, wasn't that?

SPEAKER_02

It was too much. It's a shame. It smelt really good, but yeah, not enough crunch and far too sweet. I I would not buy that again.

SPEAKER_00

No, I wouldn't. I no, very disappointed in that because I like a custard cream.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I do, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Bit of a bizarre world when I'm I'm choosing chocolate orange overwhelmingly over a custard cream in terms of flavours, but yeah, it just had it very artificial flavour.

SPEAKER_02

It was artificial, wasn't it? Yeah, it wasn't, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's still with me that vanilla in a not in a pleasant way either. So yeah, highly disappointing. I mean, there's not really much more to say on that one. What what would you score it?

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna go four.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I'm going 3.5. I'm dropping, yeah. Just very disappointing.

SPEAKER_02

Very sad about that, aren't we?

SPEAKER_00

We are. I mean, again, it was technically edible, so you're gonna go on there. I think it's reasonably priced. And if you are somebody who would want that sweet, unsweet kind of sickly flavour, then maybe that's for you.

SPEAKER_02

That's the word, it was very sickly. It was sickly, yeah. Whereas the chocolate orange I wanted more. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

This one, I mean, I know you didn't even finish your sample that we did. No, I didn't.

SPEAKER_02

I had the one square, and that was more than enough.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I finished the row on it, but but honestly, the last one felt more like I said to you out of politeness. Because I was like, I've dished it up now, I'll just finish it.

SPEAKER_02

I bought you up well, didn't I?

SPEAKER_00

Rather than um, yeah, because it just no, anyway. So yeah, 3.5 and a four. Very disappointed, Morrison's with that one. That was not a good one. Yeah, who tried that and then signed that off? Yeah, but it's clearly no one tried it. But there we go.

SPEAKER_02

It's a trend, isn't it? Chocolate cover custard creams are a trend.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and to be fair, I think we said that about the last the actual chocolate cover custard cream in general. It's just very sweet when you do it that. And that wasn't done it particularly well. No, it wasn't, no. There we go. Okay, well, after that disappointment, why we move on to the final of these three bars. Okay. And this is the slightly wild card one. It's also limited edition. The others all say new. This one says new and limited edition. So it makes me think the others are a bit gonna stick around a little bit longer. But this one, as you see, has got limited edition on it, yeah. So this is the peanut butter and jelly melt chocolate. Now, I won't spend ages on it. I hate the Americanism on the front there.

SPEAKER_02

It's very garish, isn't it?

SPEAKER_00

Well, and there's the jelly.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, the yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Peanut butter and jelly means peanut butter and jam and jam, realistically, for what we look at. It's not, you know, yeah, I don't like that. What's the picture?

SPEAKER_02

Is it is it jelly or is it jam?

SPEAKER_00

Well, it says fruity jelly. No, obviously.

SPEAKER_02

Well see the orange one had jelly in it, didn't it?

SPEAKER_00

So maybe it is a it says an orange jelly layer, but I would actually say, not to get all technical on them, that was too thin to be a jelly.

SPEAKER_02

Is that when are you? Because they've come out of the fridge, haven't they? So they're not um it's not too hot so they can melt.

SPEAKER_00

No, but listen, no, they were in the fridge, yeah. So listen to the ingredients: sugar, glucose syrup, some more sugar, orange juice and concentrate, water, acidity regulator, concentrate carrot juice, flavouring, thickener, and introvertase. That's for sorry for the orange one. At what point was gelatin in that? I know pectin can be used as like a gelling agent, but no gelatin in it.

SPEAKER_02

So But the citrus in the orange juice will thicken something up.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but I mean you call jelly because it's made from gelatin. Oh, I see what you're doing. You see what I'm saying? So how can you call it jelly when there's no gelatin in it?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, okay, fair enough.

SPEAKER_00

You know, that's that's my point. But anyway, we need to move on further. It says fruit, it says a creamy, nutty, and fruity jelly layer covered in milk chocolate. I know, it seems bizarre, doesn't it? And then on the back.

SPEAKER_02

I'm hoping it's a creamy, nutty layer and then a jelly layer. I hope they haven't.

SPEAKER_00

So it says milk chocolate with peanuts and raspberry fillings and chopped peanuts.

SPEAKER_02

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

So I think, yeah, there's a peanut layer, a raspberry layer, and peanuts. And then there's bits of peanut in it.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I hope it's gonna be sweet and salty. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I'm actually quite intrigued by this. This one. I I quite like the sounds of that.

SPEAKER_02

I don't like the packaging there. The packaging is the most garish.

SPEAKER_00

It's well, to be fair, it probably invokes America, you know, bigger, bolder, brighter kind of attitude with things. Well, I mean I d I don't want to say that, but uh potentially. Uh but yeah, so for everyone who knows, it's actually done in almost like a camo pattern, isn't it? Like it is, where it's red, white, and blue, and there's two blues on it, and the lighter blue, bizarrely considering it's the dark blue on the flag, but the lighter blue has stars on it, like on there. So it's clearly American flag or homage.

SPEAKER_02

But it's not done very well, is it? It could have been done a lot better, I feel.

SPEAKER_00

I think so, yeah. I think it could have been done a lot better. But yeah. I guess we'll have to try it and see. I'm I am quite looking forward to it because I like when I read out the individual bits, I I'm quite keen.

SPEAKER_02

In theory, it does sound good, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and looking at the picture of it, it looks quite nice. Because so again, this has a cross section of a few pieces on the front.

SPEAKER_02

There's no when you there's no discernible smell to it, so you can't get no eating.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and you're not even peanut butter. Normally, peanuts, peanut butter often does, if you know what I mean, have a have a bit of it. But again, calling it a jelly raspberry filling, raspberry puree, glucose syrup, sugar, concentrated raspberry juice, and flavouring.

SPEAKER_02

Could be one of your five a day again.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it does have concentrated raspberry raspberry juice and raspberry puree in it. So yeah, and that concentrated raspberry juice doesn't say from I suppose it's concentrated though, doesn't it? Old way of putting it, but there we go. Right, should we give it a go?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I'm up for this.

SPEAKER_00

That was very nice.

SPEAKER_02

That was very nice. I like that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I liked that as well. I thought the my only the sort of two things to pick up on as more of improvements rather than criticisms because I liked it. Is that I'd like a little bit more raspberry or consistent layering raspberry.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the raspberry wasn't in an even layer, was it?

SPEAKER_00

It was like little blobs of it, yeah, and also it wasn't every square like other squares that we had. One of them had a lot of like a really good amount. I was happy with raspberry, and the other two were a little bit lacking. It was there, but it wasn't as present. If it had been a consistent layer, it would have been better. And also, either slightly bigger chunks of peanut or more of them in there. But I really liked it overall.

SPEAKER_02

I did that raspberry flavour was stunning.

SPEAKER_00

It was really nice, and the peanut butter was like proper peanut butter, not overly sweet, and yeah, so it wasn't like a Reese's peanut butter where it's got a load of powdered sugar in it. Not saying there wasn't any in there, but it did it tasted quite savoury, to be honest. And that sweet, salty thing really came to play here, didn't it, with it?

SPEAKER_02

Um the chocolate again, nice and creamy, nice chocolate. It all worked really well together.

SPEAKER_00

It did. Yeah, I was impressed with that. I liked it again. Garish packaging aside, I just thought the flavours were really good. It wasn't too sweet, it was just it was creamy, nutty, and fruity, as it says on the front.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I was impressed with that when they pulled it back, Morrison's well done.

SPEAKER_02

It was, yeah, it was not it's different. I don't think I've ever had a bar like that before.

SPEAKER_00

That is a good point, Asia. Yeah, I don't think I've ever had anything like that over here.

SPEAKER_02

Um I would buy that again.

SPEAKER_00

I would buy that. Yeah, you you'd have to be in a particular mood for it, but I would buy that, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it was very, very tasty, very yeah, just delightful.

SPEAKER_00

It was. And again, 165 grams, two pounds. So I actually think of the three, it's probably the one I'd pick.

SPEAKER_02

I know you might say the Jaffel one, but I did like the orange one, but I really did like the raspberry in that. When you got the raspberry in that, it was such a nice flavour and it went so well with the peanut butter. Yeah, it's on a par with the orange for me. I would be spending a good five minutes in the shop trying to decide between the two, and then I'd probably end up picking both of them up.

SPEAKER_00

We've all been there. Yeah, so with that in mind though, what would you score at? I think you have the orange one an eight.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna give this one an eight.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I'm gonna give it an eight as well. So slightly higher for me than the orange, but on par with you. I think that's a really good score.

SPEAKER_02

That that's a really good bar of chocolate, and it's very unusual, but it really works.

SPEAKER_00

It is, and then yeah, I I liked it. Unusual, it works. Does say limited edition, but I'd much rather they add that in there than the custard cream.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, they can they can get the get rid of the custard cream and keep that one on permanently.

SPEAKER_00

Hear that, Morrison's bin the custard cream, pay attention to the floor. Keep the peanut butter and jelly milk chocolate in permanently.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I I like that. I like I like yeah, the peanut butter and the orange one like best so far. The custard cream can go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Okay, and then that leads us into our final item, which is the ice cream from Lidl. Which is the is it caramel and nut?

SPEAKER_02

Caramel and nut flavour we've gone for.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, caramel and nut, which is one of the I think there's three flavours, did you say?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, there is three flavours.

SPEAKER_00

There's three flavours of this um double paradise section, which is what we we had the um what was it last week? The cherry one.

SPEAKER_02

We really thoroughly enjoyed that one last week.

SPEAKER_00

We thoroughly enjoyed that one, and this one is one of three. So the other one's a cookie, some cookie of cooking, I think it's cooking caramel. Yeah, so there's an third one anyway, on there. But yeah, this second one is let me read it out now, I've got them. Double Paradise Nut and Caramel flavour, ice cream with hazelnut flavour, and ice cream with caramel almond flavour with hazelnut sauce and white chocolate with caramelised nuts. So I'm very excited about these.

SPEAKER_02

It does sound nice, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_00

It sounds delicious. Now, I'm not seeing anything in there to give you the zing that the sour cherry did in the last one. No, but hazelnut sauce, as long as you haven't overdone it, can be quite savoury in a nice way, really pleasant way. So I'm hoping that will cut through it. Now, the box, you get four. And how much was this?

SPEAKER_02

£3.29.

SPEAKER_00

£3.29. So yes, I as I remember from last week, we said on a little bit on the high side for you know, little ice creams, but actually, if this is the same quality as the one last week, that's that's a worthy price, isn't it? Delicious, better than any magnum that last one was. Oh, definitely I'd had anyway. So this has got a high bar to to get over, hasn't it? To meet, and you get four. As we said, brands often have three.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, which is ideal because if there's a couple of you, you get two each.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, three is always an annoying number, which I think they always did to make fortune to buying two boxes or something um on there. But yes, as I said, it's the yeah, g gelatelli, whatever their own brand is, double paradise nuts and caramel flavour. Now the box is quite it's quite pleasing to be fair. Um a sort of like pale, I don't even know, like a hazelnutty colour, isn't it? It's going in there, yeah. It is like a hazelnutty colour. There's a bit of a pattern on part of it, and then there's some hazelnuts and a cross section of the ice cream on there to get the point across. And it does look really nice.

SPEAKER_02

It does look nice. I think it's a nice classy box, I think. I think this is their premium range of ice creams. And the box looks premium. The ice cream, well, last week was definitely premium. The ice creams look premium from the pictures.

SPEAKER_00

So the ice creams look premium and they're priced in that range, but like we said for the last week, if at that how good they were, they're definitely worth the worth the money. Now, this one on the back, because I know I didn't look at this last time, but it's a good point, they little tell you on there that there was two ice creams in last week's one. So there seem to be more the one than the other. Now this one's telling you that 30% hazelnut flavoured ice cream, and then 15.7% caramel and almond flavoured ice cream. So there's double the hazelnut flavoured ice cream than there is the caramel and almond flavour. Topped with 21% salted hazelnut flavoured sauce, 30% white chocolate with 1.8% caramelised almond and hazelnut pieces, and pistachio nut pieces. Okay, and that's all the nuts on the outside there. I was gonna say, even though it just says caramelised nuts, you'd assume it's gonna be hazelnuts, even though it is just called nut and caramel flavour, but because it's hazelnut flavour ice cream and hazelnut sauce, actually that's quite intriguing. That's quite nice that it's um almond, hazelnut, and pistachio in there.

SPEAKER_02

It looks really good.

SPEAKER_00

It looks good, and again, uh slightly definitely worth it when you actually look at the packet. It's not a plain packet, it's not a clear packet. It's actually got you know the name of it and some double and some uh pictures of nuts and things on it, so yeah. I'm looking forward to it.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, it looks good. I can't wait to try it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, shall we give it a go then?

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely. That was stunning.

SPEAKER_00

That was absolutely delicious, wasn't it?

SPEAKER_02

I've never tasted an ice cream like that before. I thought last week's was excellent, but I think that's just pipped it slightly.

SPEAKER_00

I I don't know if I if I would say it's pipped it personally, but I'm I'm agreement it's up there with the best, the very best. Now I have there is a Magnum double or Magnum something that has that flavour profile. It's like hazelnut, I think it's hazelnut ice cream with hazelnut cream on the outside covered in the chocolate, but I think that's nicer.

SPEAKER_02

I've not tried the magnum to me. That was like a Ferrero Rocher in an ice cream. It was delicious, really, really nice.

SPEAKER_00

All over it was tasty, it all worked together well.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the the the chocolate with the nuts, the hazelnut sauce, the ice creams, it was all blooming lovely.

SPEAKER_00

Oh it was yeah, it was all delicious. Uh highly impressed with that. And I think you mentioned about the name.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I feel like they've let it down by just calling it nut and caramel.

SPEAKER_00

Double paradise, definitely. But yeah, nut and caramel is a bit simple on there. I don't know, they it I I agree, the name's actually unexotic, whereas actually the that taste is amazing for what it is.

SPEAKER_02

That little well, well done, Lidl, because yeah, so far truly stunning ice cream.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and we made a an off-mic decision that we're gonna have to try the third one uh next week, and that's um what did you say it was?

SPEAKER_02

Caramel and cookie, golden caramel and cookie flavour.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, golden caramel and cookie. So again, name might be a bit of a disservice, but we'll give that one a try because so far, those last week's the cherry one and this one, the ice creams of the summer. Yeah, they're the ones we recommend to go out and get.

SPEAKER_02

You need to try them, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh so delicious.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but wait till I've gone and got some more furs, please.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, don't buy them before we have, let us stock up and then you can go out and buy them, please. Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they absolutely stunning. I'm so impressed with them.

SPEAKER_00

I'm very impressed, absolutely delicious. Now, bearing in mind, again, they're 340 mil, 272 grams, which seems to be about the right size.

SPEAKER_02

I think we looked, didn't we, at Magnum's and they were the same size as a magnum, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

68, 85 mil per ice cream, 68 grams. That was the same as a magnum double um on there. So, yeah, so given all that, what would you um what would you score at?

SPEAKER_02

I'm going 9.5.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, I'm going 9 as well. So we're right up there. This is creme de la crème.

SPEAKER_02

Elite, elite elite level ice creams. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I'm gonna be sad because I'm pretty sure they will get rid of those at the end of the summer or something.

SPEAKER_02

Of course they will.

SPEAKER_00

They will, and I'll be sad to see them go.

SPEAKER_02

Do you know what I will be as well?

SPEAKER_00

Because you know it's making me go, we'll go into Lidl, because we don't go into Little really, like me and Carly, but it makes me go, we'll go into Lidl.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, just to get the ice cream. I I always feel that Lidl's ice creams are much better than Oldies anyway. And I always feel they're a lot better than most places.

SPEAKER_00

Most supermarkets, yeah, yeah. I agree, they're up there. But makes me go in there going, oh, do you know what? We'll do our normal shop there so I can pick the ice cream up at the end. Yeah, so yeah, well done, Lidl. Very good.

SPEAKER_02

Excellent, excellent.

SPEAKER_00

And with that, we're going to our final segment, Debbie's Fun Fact. Debbie's fun facts. So, what have you got for us this week?

SPEAKER_02

I've got an absolute cauker for you this week.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. I'll be I'll be the judge of that.

SPEAKER_02

Fair enough. Are you ready? Are you sitting comfortably?

SPEAKER_00

I am, I am.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. And I'm talking about spam.

SPEAKER_00

Spam.

SPEAKER_02

Spam. Okay. Not the spam emails that you get.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

The actual tin of spam that you can buy.

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

And spam it got its name from be it's um short for spiced ham.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, is it? Yeah. For some reason I thought it's it was like an acronym. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So spam is just short for spiced ham. But here's the corker.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

There's no spice in spam.

SPEAKER_00

So why is it called spam then? Why is it called spiced ham if there's no spice in it?

SPEAKER_02

A can of spam has just six ingredients. So you know, maybe it started the lower ingredient thing before MS did, anyway.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_02

But it has pork, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrate, which is a preservative often we use for cured meat. So yeah. Just six ingredients in your spam, which is short for spiced ham, but there's no spices in there.

SPEAKER_00

That is, I mean, it's just called a ham, then, isn't it? Like at that point.

SPEAKER_02

It tickled me there.

SPEAKER_00

That's yeah, no, that's a good one.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, spam is just such a strange, strange product, anyway.

SPEAKER_00

It is. Um, I'm sure most people know what it is, but it's basically like a a formed, uh, uh a reformed and then tinned meat. Where if you pour it out of the tin, it comes out as just like a slab, doesn't it? And you slice it, and it doesn't look like meat, it's not like a a steak or a slice of pork, it's reformed, isn't it? It's all it's all the bits of pork that couldn't even go into a sausage, I think, um, ground up and and mushed into this shape with those extra ingredients, but no spices. I um because I'm not gonna lie, when you said it first time and said stands for spiced ham, I was like, that's not a caucus, but I thought I didn't want to be the one to break it to you. But I will say that at the end there is yeah, it's intriguing as to where that came. Does anybody know the origins of why they lie to us and call it spiced ham? If so, please send it in.

SPEAKER_02

I think somebody just thought spam rhymes with ham. So yeah. Maybe somebody thought it was very flavourful. It was very popular years ago, and then it came back. It had a resurgence in popularity, didn't it, when they bought out spam fritters?

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's also, I'm not saying it's really popular there, but it appears to be popular in um some Asian countries as well. So we know some people who like to cook, you know, a bit a bit more from around the world, and one of the things they do, I believe it's Korean, is um army stew. Army stew, and that has spam in it. They use spam as the meat in that, and that's how it's apparently traditionally done. I please don't quote me on this, and but do correct me if I'm wrong and send it. Something to do with I think Korean War, maybe American vets going over there, introducing spam into it, and it was like a way of using everything together. Um something like that, anyway. But then also thinking about it in the UK, anyway, if you go to a Chinese shop, which fine is more of a it's not traditional Chinese food, it's definitely a blend of English palate Hong Kong food um over here, and that if you get their special fried rice often, the meat in that is often spam. The pork in that is is often spam.

SPEAKER_02

See, I have a friend who is stocking up on goods, should there be a zombie apocalypse.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And they have several, by several, I mean 20 plus tins of spam under their bed.

SPEAKER_00

Well, because it never goes off. No. I mean, that should tell I mean it's surely it's got have some life on it, maybe you know, like five, ten years.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Uh it's probably just got a best before date rather than a used by date. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean if that doesn't disturb you.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Next next time you're in a supermarket, pick up a tinner span and see what the expiry date on it is.

SPEAKER_00

When it tells you it expires in the year 3000, you know it's healthy, don't you? And there, whoa, whoa, amazing. Spiced ham without the spice.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

It's almost like a form of vegan chicken, isn't it? It's like that, you know. Next we'll next week we'll have um spam, but it's actually no ham, it's just spices. That's the next, that's the next evolution. Um, but yes, brilliant. Thank you for that fact. That was uh that was entertaining and uh and informative.

SPEAKER_02

We're learning something new every week.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, exactly. And so, yeah, that's another week of Snack Week. Thank you everyone for listening.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, thank you for listening.

SPEAKER_00

We'll be back next week, and like I said, we will have to have the third of those articles. Oh, we will definitely look forward to bringing our thoughts back to you, all who listen. Yeah, thank you very much.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you.

SPEAKER_00

See you next week. Bye.
