This week we try a packet of custard creams which has 3 summery flavours in it. We also try the final ice cream in Lidls double paradise range. Will it be as good as the others?
Hello everybody. Welcome to Snacks What You Get, the weekly podcast where mother and son review snacks and discuss what they've eaten this week. I'm Chris, the son, and this is Debbie.
SPEAKER_00The mum.
SPEAKER_02Hello everybody. Welcome to another week of Snacks Weekend.
SPEAKER_00Welcome back.
SPEAKER_02Yes. To start things off, must apologise. Last week's episode was a day late. Currently doing our kitchen and yes, uh didn't didn't upload in time, didn't edit and then upload in time.
SPEAKER_00So these things happen.
SPEAKER_02These things happen. It's not too bad, but that was episode 10 last week.
SPEAKER_00That's amazing, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Amazing now, yeah. Um so on to episode 11. And without further ado, let's go in for new bites.
SPEAKER_00New bites.
SPEAKER_01New bites, new bites, new new bites, bites.
SPEAKER_02So, what is your new bites this week?
SPEAKER_00My new bite this week is from Oldie, specially selected spinach and feta pie.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay, so savory option.
SPEAKER_00Savoury option. Sounds nice. How do they describe it? It's an indulgent cheta cheese, sun-dried tomato, and spinach with a cheesy blend of mature cheddar cheese, leek and chives. It's an individual pie. And it was a little bit on the spinny side, but I suppose it is their specially selected range.
SPEAKER_02Okay. How much?
SPEAKER_00£2.79.
SPEAKER_02And is that that's an it's an individual pie?
SPEAKER_00It's an individual pie. Okay. Um yeah, it yeah, it definitely says service one.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's good.
SPEAKER_00Goodness. Um, but I have to tell you, it was really good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, worth it.
SPEAKER_00It was it was worth it. I and I would I would buy it again. It was filled from top to bottom, like not like one of these.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the these things make a difference. Like if it's if it's you know, coming up to three quid, that's starting to get into branded pie territory. You've got to make sure it's filled and tasty. And if it is those two things, then yeah, yeah, sounds like quite a good deal to be fair.
SPEAKER_00It was really nice. I was surprised actually. I thought it would be, you know, our feta's got a bit of a tang to it. I thought it would be, yeah. But actually, it there was no tang to it, just a very tasty, very enjoyable pie filling, very nice pastry, and a proper pie because it was pastry all round.
SPEAKER_02Brilliant. That not not a ramekin with a hat.
SPEAKER_00It was um wasn't uh yeah, no, proper pie. Proper pie, proper tasty, thoroughly enjoyed it. Oh, good. What about yourself?
SPEAKER_02So for me this week, stayed sweet, as I always do, um, was from Sainsbury's, and it was their cappuccino sponge Swiss roll cake. Taste by taste of difference. So Sainsbury's ran in there. Cappuccino sponge roll is what it's got like three different names on your on the side there, but yeah, it's cappuccino sponge roll, is what it says on the the thing on the box. Um, and it was delicious.
SPEAKER_00Was that it is fresh in the fresh count or in the cake aisle.
SPEAKER_02It's in the cake aisle. Right, it is, yeah. So it's not a fresh one, it it's obviously delivered to the store. Yeah, um, and it was delicious, yeah. It's chocolate sponge roll filled with coffee buttercream. Oh, it's got a sprinkling of sugar on the outside, which just gives it a bit of there's a little bit of texture because they've that quite firm granule. I did it's one of those things where you wouldn't normally say, Oh, it's granulated sugar or castor sugar or something like that. It's a slightly bigger one, it's not icing sugar, and it just gave it a bit of texture almost, like you could definitely notice them, and that's why they stood out to me as having an effect, whereas often it's just in the way. Yeah. Um, but no, delicious. Nice coffee cream, not too strong, not too subtle. Um, the chocolate sponge probably didn't taste overly like chocolate, but it's a Swiss roll, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00They don't always do they was the sponge because sometimes they can be a bit dry.
SPEAKER_02I found it to be a very good balance. It was it definitely wasn't a really moist sponge, but I didn't find it too dry. And the buttercream amount was a good amount in there. Oh nice. And that's £1.80.
SPEAKER_00That's not bad.
SPEAKER_02No, and it was quite a good size. Like, I don't I could I don't know how to describe it on there, but I think I mean how many serms do they say? They say serve six, probably say serves three to give yourself healthy portions. I think in the end I cut it into six. I didn't eat it in six uh six goes, but I think I did cut it and put it in six, or just you know, so you can take a bit of a bite out of it properly um on there. But yeah, they're delicious, it was. Um yeah, £1.80. I thought it was really reasonable.
SPEAKER_00It's a good price, I think, especially for Sainsbury's.
SPEAKER_02Yes, exactly, and they're extra special, no taste of difference. Yeah, apologies, yeah. They taste the difference. So, yes, that was my new bite. Lovely, yes, and then that leads us into our main segment, which is the tasting grounds. It's the tasting grounds. Okay, so this week we've got at the very end, we're gonna have to try the final of the well, the third and final of the Lidl's ice cream range that we've been trialing the last couple of weeks. Oh, yes. Uh so it's got it's got big shoulders to try and get get on top of. Um, yes, which is a golden caramel and cookie temptation.
SPEAKER_00So I'm um looking forward to that.
SPEAKER_02Yes, the other two have been amazing. And in the before that, our main part, we've got it's a pack, they're all the same apart from the flavours, so it's the same biscuit. But it is the summer fruit custard cream twists variety pack by Sainsbury's.
SPEAKER_00I'm hoping these are gonna be nice.
SPEAKER_02Same, they they they smell nice when we open the packet and they um have some nice flavours, but basically, this is a pack of custard creams with three different flavours in that are um summer fruit flavours. So there is a strawberry and cream flavour, a peach and cream flavour, yummy, and a blueberry and cream flavour.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I'm looking forward to trying that one.
SPEAKER_02Yes, so interesting. I think that was a good pickup by by you there to seeing that. Um it says limited edition on it.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I was guessing it's summer. I yeah, summer fruits for the summer.
SPEAKER_02Exactly, and um yeah, so we're gonna try all three of these flavours. The first one on my plate is the blueberry flavour.
SPEAKER_00Um, just before we get into them, yeah. These were, I think, a little bit pricey. £1.95 for three. Oh, for custard creams. For custard creams, where they've been doing the twisted packs for about 50p, haven't they?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they're normally very cheap, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I I'm I'm hoping that these are obviously worth the extra spend. Yeah, that's quite pricey for custard creams, isn't it? For own brand, I know they're twisted because they've got different flavoured creams in them, but I still think, you know, 195 for three packs.
SPEAKER_02Yes, no, I I agree. They're not massive packs, I don't know. No, no, each one of those is probably a little bit like a small a small pack of custard creams. I mean there's one, two, three. So eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. There's about twelve biscuits per pack in there. Unless you've got thirty six.
SPEAKER_00I definitely feel these are pricier than the standard twisted creams. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and for those unfamiliar, twisted, they like at Christmas, they might do like a gingerbread one, or they do they did a uh the Bourbons with Black Forest, and they um stuff like that. So they they just they take custard creams or Bourbons, they seem to be the two they do it with, and then they um change the flavour. Which is which is interesting, and I like the concept, but we've always had a bit of a problem with Sainsbury's biscuits somewhere.
SPEAKER_00It's not always been well executed, has it?
SPEAKER_02No, that we we both find the biscuit a bit tough, a bit as we were talking about earlier. If you were getting really technical, it's almost like the dough's overworked.
SPEAKER_00They yeah, they are yeah, tough is the right word.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they require a lot of moisture to get to be like after dunking. So we we won't struggle with these and try three of these, but but the but this could be different with the extra price, everything like that. We'll we shall see. Yeah, so the first one is blueberry, they all look very similar, they do, which is a very, very standard custard cream, they don't have anything on them that would designate them as well.
SPEAKER_00No, it I mean it even says custard cream, doesn't it? It's just a standard custard cream biscuit.
SPEAKER_02It is, and the only thing that would give you a hint at the flavour, although you said you you struggled when I showed them all next to each other, is the slight variation in the colour of the custard.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, if I open it up, I can clearly see that is a purpley blue purpley blue colour. I must say the cream smells rather nice.
SPEAKER_02It smells nice, yeah. It does. I do agree with that, it does smell nice, and it looks like a custard cream, and it's just I will say slightly off-putting, seeing the purple colour from the side, as opposed to I suppose it's not a good colour for food, is it? It's not, it's a bit grinchy, if you know what I mean, like you know, greens, purples, all these things, they just contrast a bit too well in a bit of an odd way.
SPEAKER_00But it does look like you'd expect that to with mashing up some blueberries and putting them in some cutter cream vanilla fillings.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's not particularly a criticism, it's just more of like an observation that I look at it and go, oh, it's a bit garish, but it's exactly what you'd want to see in that situation, you're right. And then the main packet, so they will effectively, I'm not sure. I I like it and I don't at the same time, I think.
SPEAKER_00Well, I can't, it's difficult. Well, yeah, they've got I suppose they've got the stripe on there, haven't they, for the blueberries?
SPEAKER_02All three colours, yeah. Yeah, you're struggling with that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've i I don't like that peachy colour.
SPEAKER_02I'm not the stripes on it look so they've done the background, like the block background, is a very like light peach colour, and then when they've they've done stripes across them, so diagonal stripes in each of the colours of it. Strawberry, there's a pink, and peach, they've done a slightly darker peach colour, which looks a bit odd against the lighter peach colour of the um, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And from a distance, I can't I can't see though.
SPEAKER_02But what's even more odd is it looks like, and this could just be the effect because of where it's gone, is that the peach for the block in the middle that tells you what flavour it is, is the third peach colour, not not the same as either of the other two, it looks like.
SPEAKER_00I'd say that's orange.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, I suppose it could be. But yes, they've done like these stripes across it, split into thirds. So the top set of diagonals is pink, the middle is the peach, and the bottom is the blueberry colour.
SPEAKER_00I don't it's it's not great packaging, is it? I know they're they're like a there's not a value range or a base. No, it's their standard range, isn't it? But it's it's not the most attractive packaging I've seen.
SPEAKER_02It's not the most attractive packaging, and it yeah, but I I suppose it does what it's supposed to do. It's quite bright, quite summary, I suppose, in that sense.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it's hard to argue against it. But if anyone wanted to know, you get 450 grams in this three-pack. Um must be about 150 grams a go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the same number of biscuits in each packet, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02It it is, yeah. It's about 12. Um it would have counted it on there. But yes, they somewhere broken on top. That's hard to know whether it's poor, you know, transport Sainsbury's or us getting them home.
SPEAKER_00Maybe I'm always very careful with my biscuits because I don't like biograms.
SPEAKER_02No, exactly. I don't I don't either, so yes. Um right, I suppose all that's left is for the blueberry ones for us to give them a go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, let's get into these.
SPEAKER_02Well, I quite liked that. I did. I I think it was for blueberry is often quite blueberry's quite a subtle flavour, really. It is, yeah. And it can be quite hard to get that across. And in isolation, if you didn't tell them what flavour it is, would I have guessed blueberry? I don't know, but I definitely could taste blueberry, and yeah, it wasn't overpoweringly artificial.
SPEAKER_00No, it wasn't. I thought it was a very nice flavour, actually. Um the biscuit, I think it's quite I feel like it's quite a thin biscuit and it's it's um cooked well, overcooked.
SPEAKER_02It's certainly crispy, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00It is very crispy, a little bit dry, a little bit dry, yeah. Unfortunately, but the the the cream goes a long way to helping with that.
SPEAKER_02It does. I I kind of wish it was a little bit thicker layer of cream. I feel like there wasn't much because I don't I didn't get much of the cream and the texture, whereas I got a lot of the flavour.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, I think it could be the cream was very flavourful, very nice, worked well, more cream needed, I think. Um yeah, if they sold a packet of those on their own, I might pick them up.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I think it's important to think about you know the artificial flavour that can sometimes linger because I remember there was it there did they do like a salted caramel bur Bourbon at Christmas or something like that? Pretty sure it was salted caramel on there, and it was just very artificial flavoured, and it just wasn't pleasant at all. No, um, so the fact they got the balance right on that first one makes me have a bit of hope for the next ones because that was nice. I my only criticism would be I'd like a little bit more of the blueberry cream, a little bit more of the cream because the cream was very nice. Yeah, I didn't need any more flavour from it, just the actual like a a bit slightly thicker layer of cream to have some of that texture in it. Whereas it felt like I was just eating a biscuit that was flavoured like blueberry, there wasn't much texture with the cream, whereas a normal custom cream, I feel like there's a little bit, you get a little bit of that texture in there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, but no, I enjoyed them. I I agree with you. If I was to if they were to sell them separately, I'd pick them up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like they'd be a good dunker as well.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah, quite an interesting flavour though to dunk. I think more tea than coffee.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because it do you know what? That dunking into tea might give it a little bit because of the slightly, I'm not gonna say perfume, but the very slight perfumey nature of that flavouring quite go it would um turn it into an almost like L Grey kind of flavour, don't you think? Yes, if you dip the tea, um yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I am a dunker though, so I am a dunker as well.
SPEAKER_02We we deliberately didn't on this, per firstly, very hot out there, so it's a hot drink, no thank you. But also, um, I think we wanted to just be consistent. Uh there is gonna be dunking tests and stuff for other things in the future, but with this one, I think we just wanted to get the raw flavour because when you dunk, when once something takes on the tea or coffee from your dunk, it it can change it quite fast. It changes it considerably, yeah. It does, yes.
SPEAKER_00What flavour have we got next then?
SPEAKER_02So, well no, firstly, oh right, sorry, what was your score?
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go six.
SPEAKER_02Okay, nice, it's not too bad.
SPEAKER_00No, it was it was nice. I would probably pick them up if I saw them on their own, but there's a lot better biscuits out there.
SPEAKER_02Fair enough. And I'm gonna go for a 6.5, which I I would say might sound harsh, but is I would say a respectable score for what they are. I think that's a respectable score. I think improvements, main improvement, a bit more cream in there, but I do think Sainsbury still have a a bit of a problem with their biscuit.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they are just a bit tough. I mean, that that was better than some of the.
SPEAKER_02I feel like that was better, yes. I think they're going the right direction, but yes, so yeah, 6.5 from me and a six from you. Not bad start. No, no, and that moves us on to the peach flavour.
SPEAKER_00Peaches and cream.
SPEAKER_02Peaches and cream. So looking at it, again, looks the same. Uh, if anyone's got these on a plate, you've got to look at the cream to tell the difference.
SPEAKER_00They're identical to the blueberry ones.
SPEAKER_02It's clearly the same biscuit, and that's fine. You know, the oh, I'd say that's fine, it is fine, but they are charging a bit of a premium on it. You'd expect, but I just think I'd I'd like a bit more differentiation, sort of thing. Yes, a bit like you know, how the MS ones had MS in the custard cream person, didn't they? You'd you'd think something slightly different, but we are what we are, and yes, the peach one. Now, this one, I hope you agree, a lot less fragrant.
SPEAKER_00It is. I'm barely I'm getting a little bit of something fruity smell, but yeah, fruity and sweet.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I would struggle more to identify this as peach than I would have done for the blueberry, yeah, blueberry, even though I I was like, Oh, I'm not sure if I could have identified that. This is just sweet and fruity, quite pleasant, yeah, but it's really subtle the smell. The blueberry you could smell from.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the blueberry was quite strong.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because not quite across the room, but on the plate down by the side of us, I could smell the blueberry. Yeah, this one you have to get it quite close. Yeah, other than that, it looks the same. Now, again, like I was saying earlier, on the packet for peaches, that's the one you're struggling with the most, isn't it? Because so the stripes, the background is a peachy salmon y colour, the stripe is a peachy colour, and down the middle they've got like a big block of like a raspberry purpley colour, and then they've got the three blocks which tell you the flavours, and they've got one with white writing, they've got a pink one that says strawberry, a peach coloured one with peach, and a blueberry one. Uh sorry, a purpley blue one with blueberry in. And I would say the peach looks to be a third peach colour to like it. Just feels like they they maybe just shouldn't have chosen the background to be to be that peachy colour. They probably should have gone yellow or something, I don't know, make summary.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I don't I that peachy colour is putting me off the overall packaging and peachy colour, because I just don't think it's an attractive colour.
SPEAKER_02It's not, I don't think it is. Yeah, it's not, but yeah, the inside though, because I don't think we said it, we might not have said it with the first one, is they're all individually it they're all in each flavour is individually packaged, yes, which is in a very cheap, thin, clear packet. Yeah, it does have printed on them though, the flavour. So if you are struggling with the colours, you you know, and again, admittedly, because the cream is thin, you don't get a lot to look at to be able to see. No, it's a bit easier on on the blueberry, I think, because that contrasts the most. But the other two are quite close when you when you hold them up like that. Like you probably can't tell that difference. No, I can't. The further away it gets from me, yeah. I I can I can, but it's close, it is um on there. So yes, this is peach, and I think we should give peach a go. Okay, okay. Yeah, let's try it.
SPEAKER_00I'm pleasantly surprised by that. I thought it was very nice.
SPEAKER_02I agree. I I with with how strong the blueberry smell was, and you kind of needed that because you didn't feel that was much cream, so on there, that was a much more subtle smell, and I worried that you just weren't gonna get anything when you ate it. But I really liked that. Yeah, you did get a sort of you know, like the peach Melbourne yoghurt, yeah, exactly like that, a peach yogurt kind of creaminess from that. It really translated, I thought, well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it went really well with the biscuit as well. Yes, it did, yeah.
SPEAKER_02The flavour on it. Yeah, I think that's that's the thing, isn't it? You forget that even though there's not much, it's not like a flavoured biscuit, no, but because it has you know butter and things in it, it it does have a bit of a flavour and stuff might not work with it. But that one I thought worked really well. I almost think I prefer that to a normal custard cream.
SPEAKER_00Oh, interesting.
SPEAKER_02Now, a normal custard cream I think is a bit more versatile, but I think that was really nice, it was nice, and yeah, I'm surprised.
SPEAKER_00I must admit, like you say, when we smelt it, there wasn't a lot of smell coming off of it, but it certainly has flavour, not strong, not as strong as the blueberry one, but it did work really well, I think. I would again, I would probably pick up a pack of those on their own.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I agree. I definitely would pick up a pack of those. Um, although if this next one's good as well, I might as well just be saying, Yeah, I'll pick up that summer pack then.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, pick up the three pack, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But um, yeah, no, I was I was very impressed with that. I think the colour, it's the closest looking to a regular cuss of cream. Yes, isn't it? Because that colour.
SPEAKER_00It's a very subtle peach colour, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02It is on the on the custard creamy bit in the middle. But other than that, I thought it was very nice. Um so I guess with that, then what what what is your score for it?
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna go seven.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I'm gonna go seven as well. Yeah. I really liked that.
SPEAKER_00I did. I liked it more than I thought I would, and yeah, that very nice. Let's hope the next one's just as nice.
SPEAKER_02Well, for me, the cream, I didn't need any more cream than that. Maybe it's because the flavour was a bit more subtle but balanced. Whereas with the blueberry, I felt like I wanted more cream because I had a lot of flavour but not much of the texture that I thought the flavour was coming from.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh whereas that actually I thought balanced quite well. Again, the only thing really pulling it down for a custard cream is it's the biscuit, and that's more comedy. The biscuit is fine, not great.
SPEAKER_00If you yeah, it's it's it's a very crispy biscuit, and usually a custard cream biscuit, although you you get the snap, is softer.
SPEAKER_02It's got like a bit of bending, yeah, real small amount, but it is there. Yeah, whereas that's got no give at all, is it? That that really is a crisp biscuit. And feel A bit dry, and I hate to say that it does.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Although I didn't get so much dryness with the peach one as I did with the blueberry one. For some reason, I think it's the peach flavour seems to work really well with it, doesn't it?
SPEAKER_02I I think so. I think that's kind of one of those subtleties to it that works, but it's something we found in general across the whole biscuit range at Sainsbury's, is that their biscuits are a bit tougher, a little bit drier. Um but won't get into all of them now. We'll do that, we'll do that another day. Um so yeah, so seven from me, seven from you. That's a I think that's a very strong score for for the humble custard cream and a twist on it. I would say so far that's the highest rated, I think, of any of the twists we've done.
SPEAKER_00I think I would say so, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um, even before we did the podcast, we've tried them and I just wouldn't have rated them that highly before. No. Um as much as a lot of the flavours I go, oh, I I quite like that. Like the Black Forest one, major disappointment, just really artificial flavour. It was.
SPEAKER_00I hate to say it, that was a bad one. It should have been really good.
SPEAKER_02It should.
SPEAKER_00But it it really wasn't.
SPEAKER_02It was not. So, yes, so a good score for the peach as well.
SPEAKER_00Alright. Well, so that's on the strawberry.
SPEAKER_02That brings us on to strawberry, yeah. Strawberry and cream. Wow, the flavor I would say the smell on this is a a little bit more obviously artificial.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But it is strawberry-ish, but but yeah, I wouldn't say it's unpleasant. Quite nice, actually. It's it's a bit like what I'm trying to think. It when I say it smells artificial, but not in a bad way. I think you know how foamed bananas don't taste like banana.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02But you know it's a banana flavour sort of thing, even though they don't taste like bananas and they're supposed to. Uh, you know, again, like McDonald's banana milkshake. Doesn't taste like banana, but it is banana. I think it's this, it's funny you should say that.
SPEAKER_00I was just thinking McDonald's strawberry milkshake.
SPEAKER_02And that's why I think is it's the that artificial like taste. Again, whether or not they are, I don't know, but that that it does smell very milkshakey, actually, doesn't it? It's a good way of describing it.
SPEAKER_00I suppose it's strawberries and cream, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02So yeah, sorry, apologies, they are all and cream, so it says it's strawberry cream peach and cream. So, yes, looks-wise, it's very subtle. Again, biscuit the exact same. Yeah, your only indicator, if you've already taken out the packet, is the colour of the cream. And this one's very subtle. The smell is also subtle again. Like I say, the blueberry one is you open the packet and you can smell it instantly. This one you do have to bring up to the face.
SPEAKER_00If anyone could see us now, we're both saying biscuits stuck to the end of our noses.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, custard creams on the end of our nose, just breathing in deeply. Yeah. Fortunately, no one has walked past the window. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00They smell nice, don't they?
SPEAKER_02They smell nice, and again, different because with custard cream, yeah. I actually think a regular custard cream has to be dunked. Because it's quite a plain flavour in a nice way, and it really, really, really benefits from being dunked into tea, particularly.
SPEAKER_00There's not a lot of biscuits that don't benefit from being dunked in. They're on a lot.
SPEAKER_02But I think a custard cream, like I can eat a chocolate digestive on its own, but I wouldn't eat a custard cream on its own. Not that digestive isn't improved by dunking, just that I could eat that on its own. Custard cream, I don't think it ever chooses to eat on its own.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_02No. But we are today. We are, we're being very brave for science and reporting purposes. Yeah. We are. So I think we should um should give them a go.
SPEAKER_00Yes, let's.
SPEAKER_02Again, very nice.
SPEAKER_00It was surprisingly nice, yes.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah, uh same. It was quite again quite subtle, and I think that actually suits it. And now I'm thinking the blueberry ones might have just been a bit strong in flavour compared to the last two, and that's maybe the only reason why I was a little bit down on them in comparison.
SPEAKER_00But I really like the flavour, it I think it worked well. I think maybe the peach was just edging it flavour-wise for me, but certainly that strawberry flavour was nice. Yeah. Nice and subtle, but again, a nice creamy strawberry flavour.
SPEAKER_02But it was, it was very creamy flavour, wasn't it? It was it was nice. And price again, biscuit it not quite up to the level, but no, it's been the same, same on all of them, isn't it? So yeah, but no, I'm happy with that. I liked that. Makes me think, yes, I would actually just pick up that packet now.
SPEAKER_00I was just thinking the same thing myself.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, arguing about oh no, maybe they should sell the packets individually, or the flavours individually. But actually, no, I I just liked them all.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I like you said, I do really think they'd work well with a cup of tea.
SPEAKER_02They do, yes, I I agree. Um, and so with that, what what would you score at?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I did like the peach slightly more. I'm gonna go 6.5.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I'm gonna go the same in the middle, sort of thing on that. I think my blueberry it puts on par with the blueberry. I think I did prefer it slightly, but it's it's for me, it's in between the blueberry and the peach, but again, the biscuit, everything just keeps it back that little bit. So I think 6.5 is respectable. It's a custard cream, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it's it's nice to try a different version of it.
SPEAKER_02Very nice to try a different version of it.
SPEAKER_00I think I'm gonna say well done, Saint Brees.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well done on those. I think they're they're really tasty.
SPEAKER_00Because I've not norm I'm not normally impressed by their biscuits. I'm not gonna say I'm impressed by those, but I did enjoy them.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah, I've not been blown away. Had the biscuit been perfect, maybe. Yeah, but they're they're respectable. I will I do think 195 is is getting up there. Now I know you get three in there, so it's like buying three packets, you could argue £1.50, but £1.50 should be the limit on something like that, isn't it? You know, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I I I feel like you're buying a multi-pack, they should be cheaper than buying three separate stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, true, true, because they you know they've just got the one package, they haven't got the so one pound forty, I think, should be the price.
SPEAKER_00Saying as if you're listening.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there we go. That's what we think. I think at £140, you'll sell a lot.
SPEAKER_00I would definitely pick them up again at £140.
SPEAKER_02And at £195, I think is just pushing it. But overall, very yeah, surprised and happy.
SPEAKER_00I'm happy with those, yeah. I'm surprised, but yeah.
SPEAKER_02There we go. Okay, and that leads us on to our fourth and final item of the tasting grounds.
SPEAKER_00And this is the most exciting.
SPEAKER_02This is the one we're excited, yes, about is um Liddle's part of their double range uh of ice creams, and it's the golden caramel and cookie temptation.
SPEAKER_00This is the last one, isn't it? So they only brought out three varieties, and this is the last one we tried the other two, which we thoroughly enjoyed.
SPEAKER_02We did, and and this one. I actually again I think we said this last week. I think the name git does it a disservice because whenever I hear like cookie in in the name of it, I start to think Oreo kind of yeah, but this isn't. This says, doesn't you in the description it doesn't even say cookie? No, it says biscuit and pecan nut flavour ice cream with caramel sauce covered in white chocolate with caramel and biscuit pieces. Sounds very nice. It sounds delicious, and on the back it says it is a biscuit flavour ice cream, pecan nut flavour ice cream, caramel sauce, white chocolate, a bit more caramel sauce, and biscuit crumbs. What's not to like about that?
SPEAKER_00There's not one single thing you've just mentioned that I wouldn't say mmm, yubby to.
SPEAKER_02I know, I know, uh uh same. So, yes, this has a pretty nice box, you know, as we've talked about with the other ones. It's the same, very similar pattern on it, but they've just the colours are more suited, you know, it's browns and things to go with the golden caramel and the nut sort of.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's very similar colouring to the one we had last week.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say the only thing with it is the whole thing is very similar colouring to uh the one we had last week, and so therefore, you almost have to check you picked up three three different boxes to get all three of them and not that there. So I'd say, yeah, keep an eye out for that because it's probably the only criticism of the packaging. It's not, and this is again it surprises me. This isn't their deluxe or whatever it is range. This is just their I mean, standard, I don't I don't know about calling it that, but it's their branded standard, if you see what I mean, isn't it? The gelatelli.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's I'd say it's a bit more deluxe than the standard.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it is, but it is it's not part of their deluxe range.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean these these again, they're $329 for four, and the other ones are something like $269 for six.
SPEAKER_02Yes, yeah, so it's definitely on the premium range, but again, you get four instead of three, like you do with brand like magnums and things. So I I do think so far though, we've said that these are worth it, the money, aren't they? The extra money.
SPEAKER_00I mean, the I think the packaging, the individual pack they're individually packaged inside in decent packaging, which clearly depicts what they are.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's not just a clear plastic.
SPEAKER_00So that looks quite premium, I think.
SPEAKER_02I think no, I agree. I think that's what I'm saying. Is that I think despite not being part of the deluxe range, they've clearly put a bit of effort in, or someone's put effort in somewhere. I think it pays off. So I think, yeah, we try it. Yes, okay, right.
SPEAKER_00That was delicious.
SPEAKER_02I know, right? Delicious.
SPEAKER_00That was every bit of it was stunning.
SPEAKER_02So my only criticism, and it's a very mild one, is the biscuit crumb bit that's in the chocolate on the outside uh wasn't as crispy as the ones on the previous iterations, and therefore it was a little bit soft. It's not a major problem, trust me. Uh, but it just it was a noticeable difference, but I agree, delicious, and I think that might be that's got to be the range of the summer, the summer range of the summer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, little, you have really outdone yourselves.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, knocked out of the part. All three of those are yeah, every single one tier.
SPEAKER_00That was delicious. The chocolate, it says, what did you say it says white chocolate?
SPEAKER_02It says white chocolate, but it's a golden colour.
SPEAKER_00Like it looks more like blonde chocolate, isn't it?
SPEAKER_02Which is white chocolate that's been you know cooked more, but yeah, it surprised me when it just said it. Normally they it's a bit of a fad, isn't it? At the moment, normally I would have thought they'd be trying to advertise it as blonde chocolate or something like that. But no, it it was it says white chocolate and it's delicious.
SPEAKER_00It's delicious. The ice cream inside, the caramel sauce, the chocolate coating with the the biscuit bits in. Every single bit of it was delicious, and combined together, you got an absolutely beautiful mouse.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say that's that's the other thing. All three of them have been nice bits, but delicious all together, which is as we we've found with other stuff, not always the case. Sometimes the bits individually are all nice on their own, but when you have them together, gone. But yeah, that this one is delicious.
SPEAKER_00Well, I can't say enough good things about it to be honest. Every single one of them has been lovely. Um, I'd say that they're all equally delicious. I'm not gonna lie. I thought the one last week was edged it ahead of the cherry one.
SPEAKER_02And I still personally I think that is edged it as the top one here.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, and they and again the it was just beautiful. I'm not gonna lie. I my only complaint is that they need to be bigger.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's the thing, isn't it? Shrinkflation over the last few years. It feels like everything's got a bit smaller. And those ones, though, I I would not complain if they were bigger.
SPEAKER_00No, they they are the same size as the Magnum doubles.
SPEAKER_02We've already yes, we established that same size as the Magnum doubles. Um, so they are repetitive price-wise, they're a bit in the middle because they are cheaper than Magnums when they're not on offer, but they're almost always on offer somewhere, which is then cheaper than the little ones. However, Magnums, you get three in a pack rather than four, yeah. So it's roughly the same price per ice cream, whether you get Magnum or Little, if they're on offer, and if they're not on offer, it's much better value prospect to get the little ones. But I would get them every time because I actually think they're better than any magnum we've had.
SPEAKER_00These all three of these are definitely. I think they're better than any magnums. The the flavour combinations are excellent, and this one it was just stunning. I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_02No, I completely agree. And so, with that, what would you score at? Can I go 10? You can do you haven't so far. Is that your favourite one of them?
SPEAKER_00I I I feel like it is. I under the chuckle.
SPEAKER_02Bingo, we have a winner.
SPEAKER_00I think I'm gonna say that ice cream is a 10 out of 10.
SPEAKER_02There you go. You heard it here first. That's our first 10 out of 10 on here. Now, I'm gonna go with a nine. Um I don't know if I need to revise or if I need to go, but I personally now haven't tried all three of them, think it goes nine for the cherry, nine for this one, and nine and a half for the the nut one that we had last year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, see that nut one was stunning. I think that's I I think I like the chocolate on this one better.
SPEAKER_02It does depend what you're into. Obviously, everyone has different opinions on that. So, no, ten. Wow, it feels like a big moment, like momentous occasion. It was stunning, they are delicious. I I genuinely it's hard to believe that they managed to get all three so well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, all well done, Lidl. That they are all three of them are absolutely delicious, totally worth every penny of the £3.22.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, I mean, you know, I was just thinking, I was like, on my way home, can I go pick up or all three of them put them in the freezer, you know, on there? But no, this weekend I might have to go and try and get them. Because um, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I feel sure they're only going to be here for the summer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and that's the only other thing with a lot a lot of Lidl and Ardeal, though it's not always true. They do sometimes, but it is. They often don't put limited edition on stuff when you know it's likely going to be. I mean, they were new for the summer. Like, I mean, because these are actually now about a month old in terms of coming out, aren't they? Yeah. Because we've had three weeks and you had them in your fridge for about or freezer for about two weeks before we tried the first one, didn't we? Which is now we know how nice are that is excellent self-control, ma'am.
SPEAKER_00I know. I'm proud of myself.
SPEAKER_02Exactly.
SPEAKER_00So it was really hard with this last box because uh we haven't tried the other two.
SPEAKER_02We knew how good they were.
SPEAKER_00We knew yeah, we knew how good those two were, and I I was and I wouldn't let Dave near them even, although he tried on several occasions to get into them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, no, so well done. Well, well done, Lidl. Well done. Yeah. Um, you on not eating them before Nessarian. Yeah, that that ends the tasting grounds, does. And that brings us into our final segment, which as always is Debbie's fun facts. Debbie's fun facts.
SPEAKER_00Well, this week I'm going to talk about peanut butter.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_00So peanut butter is good for you. As we all know. There we go. End it there. Right, health food, done. But studies have shown that eating peanut butter can help lower cholesterol, it can aid in weight loss, it can add protein to your diet and help prevent type 2 diabetes.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00It's also low in carbs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, that makes sense. Basically, you'll yeah.
SPEAKER_00Of course. Many peanut butters do include extra ingredients like sugar, salt, honey, or chocolate to change the flavouring. So, you know, you have to keep that in mind if you're buying peanut butter thinking that it's a health food.
SPEAKER_02So you're telling me the Brees' peanut butter cup is not health food?
SPEAKER_00Basically, yes, because of the chocolate. Oh, because of the chocolate. Oh, right, so. They do add sugar to their peanut butter, don't they?
SPEAKER_02Of course they do, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'm talking, and I must admit, I like peanut butter, but the you know the Whole Foods peanut butter. I'm not such a big fan of that.
SPEAKER_02I don't I don't mind those. I again, if just to eat it straight, yeah, it might be a bit of a struggle on that. And I suppose that's what they're talking about in moderation, eating it straight. But yeah, it's interesting, isn't it? When you think because you open the lid and it's swimming in fat and ores, and you have to mix it. And that's actually a sign that it's the good stuff because it's not got palm oil in it. Yeah, and it's not got emulsifiers and other stuff to bind it together. But you're looking at that and you don't think health food, do you necessarily?
SPEAKER_00No, no. However, this is something I bet you didn't know about peanut butter.
SPEAKER_02How much are you betting? I'm joking.
SPEAKER_00I'll I'll I'll put 50p on this one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Shake hands.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yeah. He's taking it.
SPEAKER_02So do you want to ask it here as a question rather than just have it? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, well, I need to know if you knew this. Um, peanut butter glows in the dark after it's exposed to intense light.
SPEAKER_02I did not know that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, I'll give you 50p. There you go.
SPEAKER_0050 P. Yay!
SPEAKER_02There you are.
SPEAKER_00Peanut butter glows in the dark after it's exposed to intense light. That kind of worries me.
SPEAKER_02How intense?
SPEAKER_00I've never seen that. No, but I feel like I might have to put some peanut butter in the container.
SPEAKER_02I was just thinking that. Yeah, we've got to test that, surely.
SPEAKER_00See if it glows in the dark. How strange though. I never what what what made somebody do that?
SPEAKER_02Well, I suppose that's a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_00Or maybe it just occurred, it just occurred, and they were like, oh my god, my peanut butter's glowing in the dark.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, I'll get I'm assuming, like a lot of these things, it was accidentally discovered, someone left a jar, a clear jar of peanut butter out in the sun somewhere, and then at night they noticed that it was glowing. Oh, that's a good point. On there. So it's got its own form of like bioluminescence almost, like a luminescence in there.
SPEAKER_00Very strange, but also interesting. Um, if anybody tries this at home and gets their peanut butter to glow up, please let us know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we're gonna probably try that at some point. Yeah. But if anyone does, as as um says, uh does find that, please send us a photo.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um and tell us which brand you were using.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, tell us which hey, maybe there's different intensity, different brands of peanuts. Different brands are different, yeah. Different types of p like different strains of peanuts and all that kind of stuff, yeah. Well, thank you again for another uh fun fact this week. Yeah, thank you for joining us. Yeah, and thank you everybody for joining us. Um, yeah, it's we're we're enjoying doing this though just the main thing on that. And if you do have photos of glowing peanut butter any recommendations, please either send to the fan mail, Spotify message, or the snackswhatyouget at gmail.com email address. And um, yeah, we look forward to hearing from you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we'd love to hear from you, so please do get in touch.
SPEAKER_02And we'll speak to you next week.
SPEAKER_00Okay, thanks for listening, everyone. Thanks for listening. Bye.
