This week on Face Facts, we’re going down a very honest (and slightly chaotic) rabbit hole.

From hormones and ovulation to female rage, perimenopause and the moments where you genuinely question whether you’re in control of your own emotions…

We’re talking about the things women experience but don’t always feel comfortable admitting.

We dive into body dysmorphia, mental health, disordered eating, the pressure to look a certain way and the unrealistic standards women are constantly expected to meet.

We also discuss celebrity culture, Katie Price, the public judgement women face, and why everyone suddenly becomes an expert when a woman changes her appearance.

But it’s not all serious…

We’re getting into everything from Soho Farmhouse, quitting alcohol, our biggest icks, biohacking, calories on menus, hair loss, our current favourite makeup products and the everyday things that make us feel like ourselves again.

And of course… Gem proves once again why she has earned the title of queen of swearing.

Because Face Facts isn’t just about aesthetics.

It’s about the conversations happening in real life, the ones we have with our friends, the ones we think about at 2am and the ones people are sometimes too scared to say out loud.

No filters. No pretending. Just honest conversations about life, women, ageing and everything in between.

Welcome to Face Facts, the podcast where we cut through the noise and the bullshit in the aesthetics and wellness industry. I'm Jem and I'm Faye, and in this episode we're going to be talking everything hormones, perimenopause, menopause, the rage, the body dysmorphia, the spots, and any hints and tips we can give you along the way. Yeah. So talking of hormones, uh they're wild, aren't they? Beyond wild, I've I am so influenced by my hormones. I can go from being a blubbering mess, crying at literally at the the other day it was wild. We're watching TV, it wasn't even sad, and I was just so emotional and crying. Shelly's like your bad starty period. And I'm like, oh yeah. See, I'm not a crier, really. Yeah, I'm I'm a rager. Oh and that too. Yeah, I don't I don't cry. Um yeah, I'm not really a crier, no. Um, but mine mine comes out. You're a bitch. You're a cold-hearted Capricorn bitch. Right, yeah, I'm Capricorn. I'm a crier. Um we'll just pat you. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so I find mine comes out in the car, like the road rage. So for instance, and also ovulation. So we come on at the same time last time because we're like super and zinc now, yeah. Obviously. Yeah. So I think we're ovulating now. Around now, we would be ovulating because two weeks ago. So that's why I feel so good. Oh, really? Yeah. So I feel alright in my appearance, however, I'm a little bit tangsty. Yeah. So in the car driving to the station today, okay, this is a good one. I everyone was a cockhead, fucking idiot. Nobody could drive. Like, and I was saying things and I'm like, I don't even know where this has come from. Like, cockheads. I think I've got bored of sweet. You had the best swear words ever. If if you out there have got a better swear word than cockhead, then please email in because Jem is the queen of swearing, she's the queen of swear words. She's tucked up my sleeve. But yeah, I think because I'd said so many different ones, and I even laughed to myself. I was like, don't know where that one's come from. Cockhead. Cockhead. Yeah. Um, so and I was like, um, okay, must be coming up. Okay, so ovulation. I didn't feel like going to the gym yesterday either. I really had to drag myself to the gym, and normally I'm quite up for it. I'm never I don't know if it's whether just because I've got a lot going on or you know, but yeah. So we have the rage, we have the tears, we have the oh the worst for me is like when you start to get little spots and you feel really greasy and bloated. I didn't really get spots, I'm quite lucky. I just get like the odd one. Yeah, I just get the odd one. Um mine is the body dysmorphia. So I think if I about a week before my period, if I look in the mirror, I need in my head, I need a full face and body transplant. I'm like, where have these hips come from? What's where's my legs come from? Like, what's going on with my head? Like, you are just seeing, well, for me, I'm seeing a completely different thing to to reality, but I know I'm being mental. I know I'm being nuts. But I think that's good though, because you've you're you're you've got good insight. But I suppose we see people coming into clinic who are at various points in their cycle, I ask feeling various. Do you? Yeah, I ask all my clients. Like, if they'd be if they're like, Oh, it really hurts, or I feel like this, and I go, Are you doing one? Are you ovulating? Like, I asked them outright, and they're like, Oh yeah, actually, I am. Like, there you go. But then doing nutrition, obviously, we used to study a lot about hormones and supplements and peptides and medication, and like my course was three years long, and I felt like I was studying this is uh no disrespect, I'm not um disrespecting doctors here when I say this, but the amount of knowledge that I had to know, I was like, Am I studying to be a doctor here? Yeah, like because we need we need to have to know how to treat somebody with PCOS. It's all treating people with a diet, you see, and how medications and how medications um implement your diet and and all sorts, so yeah, it was very interesting, very hard. So that's quite good then that you can bring that kind of holistic approach into the clinic. Yeah, so and I think I bring that in my own way in terms of like mental health, and I see people at various states come in, and like we've said before, we see people who are getting divorced, we see people who are getting married, like big changes in their lives, and then they want big changes in their appearance, yeah, and sometimes it's about kind of is it a glow-up or is there something else going on in there? Yeah, and it's being responsible, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And understanding that we well, sorry to interrupt, but this is a prime example of Katie Price, isn't it? Yeah, because whoever is doing anything on her should not be, it should not be able to continue practicing. She's clearly got body dysmorphia, she's got mental health issues, um she's not she this is all coming from a place of insecurity and vulnerability, and whatever she's having having done is making her look worse and not better. So I have a lady who comes to me who went to Katie Price's injector and had a really bad complication. Um she had filler injected in two big lumps here, and she looked like she had two boiled sweets in the side of her cheeks. Why are they injected in here? I have no idea. Um and it's but this is this is what one thing that gives me the ick is when celebrities promote injectors, and it's what I said before, the best injectors are not always the best marketers. No, and that's where the two things get kind of mixed up. Yeah. But I will say I do think Katie Price is looking a little bit better at the moment. Whatever she's done has settled a bit. When she first had that facelift, so tight, it was But I don't think now, like has she got any skin to pull back? Where is she where does she go from here? And I just worry because like there's no denying she's got a special needs son and they've got an incredible bond, and you're not gonna have that bond unless you spend time with that child. So she's a good mum to that boy. I don't know, I don't know about the other kids, but I can clearly see that her and Harvey have got an incredible special bond, and she's been there for that for that boy. Um, so you cannot take that away from her, and I just think and I don't think she's a horrible person either. I just think she's made some poor decisions um along the way, you know, and we've all done chit made shit decisions, however, I just think the people like operating on her should be saying no. She needs but it's another example of a woman being built up for her appearance and then getting older, and then it being her core value in a way, yeah. It's how she, you know, she swapped looks for money, and then she got older, and then things seemed to spiral. Yeah. Um, and when you have access to these things, you've got access to surgery, injectables, people are prepared to do it for free as long as you just stand next to them, which I have such a problem with. Yeah, and obviously, she's probably thinking, Oh, well, if I'm getting it for free, like that one little bit might fix that bit, you know. Yeah, it's not good. No, it's not good, and it's really sad, and this is where the regulation needs to come in, like we've said. Yeah. Um talking about menopause, then, um, because isn't it a bitch for women? You know, we spend all these years going through raging hormones, periods, and then we have to go through perimenopause, menopause. Well, it's basically it's like you're just going through puberty again, isn't it? Yeah. When you get to like perimenopause and menopause, it's like hitting puberty again, but with less fucks to give. Yeah, zero fucks, actually. I'm gonna get on the sauce when I need to.

unknown

Oh god.

SPEAKER_00

Because I just think I guess that obviously some people can't because they've got a history of cancer or they've had cancer or it's in the family and they're worried about when I say the source, HRT, they're worried. Yeah, we need to clarify. No, I don't. Um that's another reason I think why I look so different now to what I did before I had kids, because before I had kids I smoked, I drank, and I liked to party. And now I live like I'm dumb. And you look good for it. Yeah, but it does like I don't don't smoke, don't drink, don't take drugs, no, don't go in the sun. No. I mean I sound boring as fuck, really, but I look I don't look 41. No, I don't think I either, but then no, you don't. You look incredible. Um and you don't need all of those things to be interesting. Like we went when we went to recently we had a little girly trip, we had an amazing time, went to Soho Farm House, loved it, which was so special, and like it wouldn't have been any more interesting if you were drinking. No, would it? No, in fact, drinking makes me go quiet, right? So that's why I make doing everything. Oh, really? So that's why I stopped doing everything because I was going out and I was just going quieter and quieter and more in my shelf, and I just thought, no, and I just feel shit, not for days afterwards, for weeks. Yeah, yeah. And I was like, I don't need this. I wrestle with it all the time. I wrestle with I'll stop drinking, I won't stop drinking. For me, I think it's not the right time. I've got three under five. I I need and that's bad. I need that quick quick, nice. I don't drink a lot, but I have a glass of bread in an evening and I need it. Yeah, mine is a cup of tea and some chocolate. Nice, that is my thing. How many calories are in a glass of wine? Depends how big it is, but they know normally start from like 175, something like that. Depending what it is. But I don't even like the taste of alcohol. No. So in it was never but I do know what the trick is. I say to myself, I don't say, Oh, I'm teetotal or I'm never drinking again. I just say I don't want one today. Yeah. Or I don't drink one. And I've heard that a lot. It's like in the here and the now, I'm not gonna have a drink today. Yeah, just take the pressure off. Not saying that I will never not drink again, because I might do you never know what's gonna happen in your life, do you? No, I might all of a sudden be fucking crying down in a bottle of vodka. Um, but there's nothing wrong with that, you know. But it's each their own, isn't it? But for me, it just doesn't serve me. No, but I'm not one of these like preaching preachy, you shouldn't drink this, that, and yeah. I just think each their own, like you do you. Yeah, and that's the nice thing. Like when we went away, I had a glass of wine, and you were like, Yeah, have one. Yeah, like it's fine, we you can do you, and I can do me. Yeah, there's no judgment whatsoever. Yeah, exactly. I have fucking done some shit in my life. Yeah. That do you know no one's a saint, are they? No, so yeah, no, and anyone who thinks that they are that does drive me a little bit mad about the wellness world. Does it not you? Yeah, it's like all on a finger, yeah. And there's no space for any in between, and it makes me feel bad about myself. Yeah, yeah. If you like go like off the ball a little bit, yeah, and then you feel like you don't want to get back on because you feel like you've fallen off the wagon. Yeah, um, I was gonna ask you, so have you got any hints or tips for certain times of the month? Oh, I think one thing that I've really learnt to do more recently is to listen to my body a little bit. I used to try and fight things like you were saying about I don't really want to go to the gym. Yeah. I've kind of surrendered to some of those things, you know. I know what I did yesterday. When I didn't want to go to the gym. Yeah. I kept going to different bakeries and looking at the pastries and the cakes. This is how mental, like I've obviously I've not got an eating disorder, I've just got like I know I've got a disordered eating, yeah. Um, which we'll just caveat that. I'm not I'm not um endorsing eating disorders or anything like that. Like this is this is my own thing, but I'm I'm open about it, like I tell people. Um, it's a shit place to be in because I can't relax around food. I can't just think to myself, oh fuck it, I'll eat that. No, like I can't do it. No, um, I'm not anorexic, I don't make myself sick, but I am very controlling over what I eat and what I eat. Um, and I'd rather like intermittent fast and have a larger dinner and and eat more chocolate, but I still get my nutrients in, don't get me wrong. But yeah, it's just how I do it anyway. I was like, oh, I just can't I think it's good, it's good for people to hear that though, because how many other people are there out there who are kind of in the same situation? Like, I have a weird relationship with food. I think does any woman have a really contempt like I don't know many. Yeah. It's either you're like, I would love to like just be really relaxed around food. I would love that, and I get like envious of people who'll just go out and have lunch. And I'm like, how can you do that? Like I'm not not in a not in a like, oh my god, I can't believe you're eating lunch. I'm like, oh my god, I'm like so jealous that you're just you can just do that, like just to have your lunch. Whereas in my head, I'm like, is it that you've got to have certain things or no? I just like no, you don't normally eat until three, so oh okay, okay, yeah, okay. You need to wait until then, yeah, you know, yeah, yeah. Um, yeah. Although intermittent fasting is is meant to be good for you. Yeah, isn't it? Um so in terms of yeah, listening to my body was one thing I was gonna say. Um you didn't tell me your story. So what I was doing is I just kept walking around to Marks and Spencer's bakery, at the pastries, nice, sniffing them in, nice, and then just going to other bakeries. Starbucks, I went in there and had a look at the cakes and the pastries. And I'm thinking to myself, you're not going to the gym, so you might as well just have a cake. Yeah. But just have just sit in here, just have a cup of tea, just have a cake. And did you? Not going to the gym. No, because then I looked at how many calories they were, because I have to put the cat, then that's it. That's another thing that's ruined eating out for me. Because the fucking calories are on everything, letting you know how many is in there. Now, if they didn't do that, I would probably eat out more. See, I think that that then makes it kind of a dangerous thing what they've done. Yes, because if that's stopping people from eating out and enjoying themselves. What it's doing is it's stop stopping the skinny people from eating. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, well, I don't know, but yeah, it just makes and I'm like, no, you can't because you're not going to the gym anyway, did you? And I did end up going to the gym. And did you feel better? Yeah, I did. So it's always the way, isn't it? Yeah. I'm saying I've got I've got broke my I didn't fast today, did I? And I'm a pan au chocolat. Yeah. So and we enjoyed it. Yeah, it was nice. Matching pan au chocolat this morning. Um, so what are your tips for don't be mental like me. Yeah, don't do what I do, don't go in sniff pastries. Go in sniff pastries, hang around bakeries.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, no, mine are so I used to always get really bloated before my period, and I used to like water retention tablets. I said to you earlier, I was like, Do you ever do the piss tablets? And you're like, What piss? Never heard of that. Yeah. Water retention tablets. I used to take those sometimes if I felt really bloated before my period, um, just to help relieve that water retention. We did try those actually. Yeah, they did used to help a little bit. And obviously, the more water you drink, the more you will flush that through. So cane the water. I mean, water is really good for you anyway, but the minnow I definitely do not drink enough. Oh, I'm so bad. I'm so bad. Do you know what? A lot of it at the moment is because I'm really like anti-plastic and microplastics. Same. Um so when I'm at home, it's fine because I'm I'm in a glass. Um, but when I'm out and about, I'm like you need to get one of those like um I'm on a copper one. Yeah. Oh yeah, you're into your copper, aren't you? Peptides, yeah. Yes. Tell us a bit about those because I don't really understand peptides very much. Peptides are you there's all different peptides, and they are all different for different parts of the body. So you've got NAD and NAD, which is for energy. It's hugely popular at the moment, isn't it? Yeah. Um, I do copper as well, which is for skin um and hair. It's meant to be really good for your hair growth. It's blue. Ooh. Yeah, and it does sting when you inject it. Don't want to get that mixed up with Viagra. No, no, no, definitely don't inject Viagra. Oh, right. Is this an injectable? Yeah, this is an injectable. They do do like skin um tobacco. Yeah, I was gonna say. I've not tried tobacco. Um, there's I think it's TBC, which is good for recovery and repair, but it's just coming out now that they're like really, really good for you. And it's alternative medicine, isn't it? Yeah, it is. Isn't there a man who's spent a hell of a lot of money on like trying to reverse age gang rates? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. How's that going? Biohacking. I I like to talk about skin biohacking, that's a lot of what we do, isn't it? With polynucleotides, exosomes, all those kind of things. Collagen powder. I don't write it. No. I think the problem with me is if I don't if I can't see it, it's really hard to believe it. Like, it won't just go to your skin, it'll go where your body needs it, and if it doesn't need it, you'll excrete it like with any supplement that you take. So I know some people have got wild claims, and they're like, oh, it's amazing. I don't don't get me wrong, I don't think it's gonna do you any harm, but if you seriously want to induct some collagen into your skin, get some microneedling. Yes, save your money's own systems, save your money and get some microneedling. Yeah, agree with that. Yeah, we love microneedling, yeah, and it's gonna do so much more than just having a collagen drink every day. So true. What was your mum like when she went through the menopause? My mum was an absolute cycler. My mum didn't really go through it too badly because she had hysterectomy at 40 and then she was instantly put on HRT. Oh wow. But she does say that if she runs out, she's clucking outside that pharmacy like a junkie. Yeah. She's like, I'm literally I'm pacing up and down. Yeah. Like I'm ready to collect my methadone. Really? Yeah. See, I think my apparently in my family, it runs in the family, we all get dry vaginas after menopause. Oh my mum to say that. Like, that sounds really uncomfortable. It is uncomfortable. That sounds really horrible. Although I have been researching more and more recently about this O Shop. Have you heard about that? Yes, I have. I read about that a few years ago. I would definitely try it. Yeah, I'm kind of scared. PRP, isn't it? Yes. Injected. Platelet rich plasma taken from your own blood, injected around your winter roofs? Yeah. No, isn't it in your vagina? In your vagina. I don't know. I would need to do more research on that. Um, I would 100% try it. I've been taking these for the past. About six months now because obviously I'm 41 and definitely in the perimenopausal bracket, and I'd be like sitting in clinic, like on my chair, and I'd be like, Oh, I just can't get comfortable. And my like, she's one of my best friends, and she's a client of mine. She's like, What's the matter with you? And I was like, No, I can't get comfortable. She went, You're dry. So she's gonna be 60, so she's been through it all. I was like, What? She was like, You're dry down there. I was like, Is that what it is? She went, Yeah. Oh star, and she's like, That's a symptom. I was like, Great. Anyway, I've got these pineapple, yeah, um probiotics, especially for down there. Brilliant, really, yeah. They're meant to make you like smell better, taste better. Men should take them. Oh, not that I would taste that anyway. No, I don't do that anymore. No, well, tasting it. No, oh god, no, no. We talked about that before. When we were talking about Bonnie Blue, when we were talking about obviously she seems to get showered in quite a bit of semen. Um we were talking about how that for me is just in it no. It's the smell that does me. It's just the texture. It's it's just a no. It's like just a no. Yeah. No. And when you have to do that fucking warp, like that fucking run, like a crab run to the toilet when it's all fucking dripping down your leg. Do you know what I do? Like I sit on the toilet like after bits, and then I like squeeze and like squeeze it all out. If my dad, if you ever listen to this, I am so sorry, I don't have sex. I've never had sex. The children are all immaculate conception. Sorry, I haven't got a dad, so my mum won't care. No, your mum won't care. My mum's a legend. My mum won't care. My dad. I mean, if it gets back to my dad that I've had a labioplasty, I will die. Really? Yeah. Seriously. Yeah, because I've never had a dad, or like don't, yeah. And I didn't really think about that before I disclosed it. I don't really care anyone else finding out about it. I just wanted to have a really cute. Cute can. Yeah. Um my dad would die if I said a swear word. Really? Oh. Oh. So let's hope this never comes up. Luckily, we're not his demographic. Yeah, he's not a jar. No. Um, he's not um a woman and he's not going through the menopause. Yeah. Although I think men do go through menopause. Well, yeah, I mean, it's called menopause, isn't it? Yeah. Honestly. Um why the fuck is men in again in everything? Like, we can't even have the menopause. I mean, I know it's probably to do with menstruation. But why is men in menstruation? Yeah, I know. It really fucking annoys me. It should be perhaps it's because it's a shit thing, that's why they're a male-invented thing, probably. Um, so what else were we going to say about um perimenopause? Have you had any symptoms yet? You're not too young, aren't you? I really don't think so. Um I've had a couple of hot flushes. Okay. Uh I had one in clinic a couple of weeks ago, and I was like, my so I had a like top on and a jumper over the top, and my top underneath, it lasted for about 15 minutes. My top underneath was dripping. Oh god, that's kind of and it's just literally like someone sets a fire on inside. See, it reminds me of you know when you've had a baby and you get the sweat. When you're breastfeeding. Oh awful, yeah. Awful, like dripping, they just yeah, basically, it's like that. Yeah, I can imagine that. Yeah. No, I'm lucky. I've not had I don't think I'm but what I would say is I want to be really measured about going into this. Like I want to get my bloodstone. So I had mine done, didn't I? A few months ago, because I was like, I feel ragey, yeah, I've been forgetting everything, yeah, dry. Like I've I literally thought I had every symptom under the sun, and then I have my buds done, and they come back fine. But she did suggest having the coil fitted, and I've had the coil in the past. Um but you're not sure, are you? No. Hormones, yeah. But then saying that I would go on a sauce if I needed to, so but yeah. But I think, isn't it true as well, though, that your levels are different at different times at least. Exactly. So I used to gone at a different way. You could have gone at yeah, and because a lot of GPs will just prescribe the same because it's cheaper. Yeah, so I'd be cheaper. Because I thought they would be, because it's a private clinic, they're gonna be more up for get getting you on a prescription, and but they were like, No, come back in a few months. She was a bit like, I think maybe it's just what's going on in your life. I was like, Oh, oh. She's like, You have quite a lot of shit. She's just saying you're a mate, just revraging bitch. I mean that guy that you called uh what do you call him? A cockhead? A cockhead this morning might agree with that. Oh god. Um, what else were we gonna say? Right, so I wanted to ask you a couple of your icks because we've not done that yet. Okay. So what gives treatment-wise, what gives you the ick? Is there any treatments that give you the ick, or does anyone come in and ask for something and you think, oh, not again? Probably threads give me the ick, not that anybody ever asks me they give me the ick. Uh, what else gives me the ick? It's hard, isn't it? Because I think with a lot of treatments and like with threads, for example, it's you you're either you're in the camp of yes or you're in the camp of no. Yeah. So it's like we're not the right injector for you if you want threads. We're not the right, you know. And there's some wild examples out there, yeah. When you see threads and you've got eyes that are yeah, and then I've seen stuff that people have put like a thread sticking through their cheek, you know, like where they're coming back out. Oh god, and they're like, Oh yeah, I pulled it out through my cheek. Yeah, no, that's not mine at all. No, no. What else gives me the ick? Um needy people. Yeah. I I said to you that I'm I'm your worst nightmare, but you said not I'm not that needy. No, I don't think you are. If you're like me, just get on the ship. Yeah. Yeah, we're both quite hardy, aren't we? Yeah, yeah. Um, I just I don't know if that's a Capricorn in me. Like, don't get me wrong, like obviously I'm like sympathetic to shit, but if someone's like, Oh, can you help me like fucking help yourself? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You want people to kind of be showing willing. Yes, yeah, yeah. Or like if you've got, for instance, like some clients you do need to hold their hands through stuff, which is fine. I'm like completely happy to do that, but then you get like some who are like yeah, you know, like intense, yeah, phoning me up at two o'clock in the morning. Yeah, that that level of needing, yeah. Top three things in your makeup bag at the moment. The Victoria Beckham Foundation drops. Love, I love everything she's done. I love everything she's done so far. Yeah, Gucci, it's bronzer. It's actually not that expensive either. Like you think because it's Gucci, it's gonna be really spinny, but it's not, it's about 46 quid, something like that. Yeah, that's really nice, buildable as well, doesn't look over the top. Um, and Chanel Volume Mascara, and I've got it on in the midnight blue. Ooh. Or I or I like the burgundy. Mmm, you do have good eyelashes. It's the Avaji eyelash serum that does that. Absolutely stunning. We can't really go anywhere without people asking you about my eyelashes. About your eyelashes. Yeah, it's a daily thing. Yeah. But it is, do you know Avaji have brought out a scalp scarum serum? Skearum, I've just ordered it for Ricky, it turned up yesterday, so I'll let you know when it gets on with that. Yeah. Oh god, that'll be because I was like, if that works, because it's prescription as well. Huge. So I was like, if that works, like it works on the eyelashes, wow, that's gonna be a proper game changer, especially if you do microneedling on somebody, yes, and then give them that as a topical to use at home, yeah, incredible results. Yeah. So do you feel sorry for well, it's it doesn't just affect men, does it? It affects a lot of my um.
