It sounds totally made up, but it's completely real. Today we're exploring why our summer gardens are suddenly full of fluttering wings and the mind-blowing, slightly gross magic of metamorphosis.

So Finn, when you look around the park in the middle of a hot summer day, what do you usually see floating around the flowers?

Tons of butterflies. Mostly those bright orange and black ones, or those little delicate white ones that zip around.

Right. There are actually around 20,000 different species of butterflies in the entire world. But here is the crazy part. Every single one of them starts out looking completely different.

As a caterpillar! But wait, why are there so many right now in the summer? Where do they come from?

Well, butterflies are cold-blooded insects, which means they need warm weather to fly. When spring and summer arrive, the specific plants they eat start growing rapidly, setting the perfect stage for their incredible life cycle.

So how does the whole cycle actually start? Do they just pop out of the dirt like worms?

Nope, it starts with a tiny delicate egg, and I mean incredibly tiny. A monarch butterfly egg is only about the size of a pinhead, less than one millimeter wide.

A pinhead? That's so small you'd barely even spot it on a giant leaf.

Exactly. The mother butterfly carefully glues these tiny eggs to the underside of a leaf to protect them from the rain.

For monarchs, they specifically choose milkweed plants. And then what hatches? A microscopic little caterpillar?

Yes. A baby caterpillar hatches after three to eight days, and it's only about two-tenths of an inch long. It looks like a speck of dust or a tiny grain of rice, but it has one very important mission. What's the mission? Taking a nap? Eating. In fact, its very first meal is its own eggshell, which is packed with nutrients. After that, it becomes a literal eating machine.

Wait, it eats its own shell for breakfast. That's a weird way to start your life.

It is, but it needs those nutrients to survive. Over the next two weeks, the caterpillar chomps through milkweed leaves day and night, barely ever taking a break.

But how much can a tiny grain of rice actually eat?

You are not going to believe this math. A monarch caterpillar eats so much that it grows 2,000 times its birth weight in just about 14 days. 2,000 times? That's physically impossible. It's true. Think about it like this. If a human baby weighed 8 pounds at birth and grew 2,000 times its size in two weeks, it would weigh 16,000 pounds.

16,000 pounds? That's heavier than a school bus. Or like an adult elephant. Imagine trying to feed an elephant-sized baby in your kitchen.

Exactly! Because they eat so much and grow so fast, their skin gets way too tight. Since they have a hard exoskeleton that doesn't stretch, they have to shed their skin, or molt, about five different times. Each stage of growth is called an instar.

Okay, so our school bus baby caterpillar is totally stuffed. What happens when it can't eat another bite? It stops eating entirely.

It wanders away from its food plant, finds a safe branch, and hangs completely upside down in the shape of a letter J. Then it sheds its skin one final dramatic time. But underneath, it's not a caterpillar anymore.

Oh, I know this. It's the chrysalis. That hard green shell that looks like a little sleeping bag. Right!

A chrysalis, which scientists also call a pupa. And Finn, what happens inside that quiet green chrysalis over the next couple of weeks, is one of the wildest, most extreme makeovers in all of nature.

Tell me every detail. Does it just sprout wings like a superhero putting on a cape?

It's way weirder and a lot more gross than that. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar releases special digestive enzymes that literally dissolve its own muscles and organs. It turns its entire body into a liquid soup. Ew!

It digests itself! It turns into caterpillar soup! How in the world does a puddle of yellow goo become a beautiful butterfly?

That's the mind-blowing part. Floating inside that protein soup are highly organized, secret clusters of cells called imaginal discs. Imaginal disks?

Like tiny little frisbees.

Kind of. These discs have been hiding inside the caterpillar since it was an embryo, basically dormant and waiting for this exact moment. There is a specific imaginal disc for the wings, one for the eyes, one for the antennae, and one for the legs.

So they use the gross caterpillar soup as building blocks to construct the new body parts?

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. The imaginal cells rapidly divide and absorb all that protein soup to assemble a completely new, incredibly complex insect. It's basically recycling its own melted body.

That is the coolest, grossest thing I have ever heard. How long does the soup building process take?

SPEAKER_01

Usually about 10 to 14 days, depending on the temperature. Finally, the chrysalis becomes transparent, splits open, and a fully formed butterfly climbs out. Its wings are wet, soft, and crumpled at first.

Oh, I bet it has to pump them up like pumping up a bicycle tire.

Spot on! It pumps fluid from its body into the tiny veins of its wings until they expand to full size. It takes a few hours for them to dry. Once they do, it's ready to fly off and drink sugary nectar. And get this weird fact: butterflies actually taste the nectar with special sensors on their feet.

Wait, they taste with their feet? If I tasted with my feet, my shoes would be a nightmare.

It really would be, but tasting with their feet helps them instantly know if a flower has good food. And these butterflies play a massive role in our entire ecosystem.

No, they are expert pollinators. When butterflies land on flowers to drink nectar, sticky pollen brushes onto their legs and bodies.

Yes! The Eastern North American monarch butterflies fly all the way from Canada down to specific mountain forests in central Mexico. That's an epic journey of up to 3,000 miles.

And the craziest part, the specific butterflies flying south have never been to Mexico before. It takes multiple short-lived generations to travel north during the summer.
