Fear of Letting Go — When Holding On Hurts but Leaving Feels Scary
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Sometimes the hardest thing isn’t the pain itself — it’s releasing the very thing that’s causing it. A relationship, a habit, a version of yourself, a dream that no longer fits. In this episode, we sit with the fear that keeps us holding on: the fear of the unknown, of starting over, of who we’ll be without it.
Together, we’ll explore why letting go feels like losing, when it’s actually making room — and how faith can steady you when everything familiar falls away. You’ll leave with gentle truths, a calming reflection, and permission to release what God is asking you to lay down.
If you’ve been gripping something so tightly it hurts, this one is for you. Take a breath. You’re safe here.
This moment is for the person who is afraid to let go. Maybe you know something is hurting you. Maybe you know someone is not good for your peace. Maybe you know a season has ended. But your heart still feels attached. Letting go can feel scary. Not because you do not understand the truth. But because your heart still remembers the hope, the memories, the promises, the version of them you wanted to believe in. The future you imagined. Maybe you keep thinking. What if I let go too soon? What if things change after I leave? What if I never find this kind of connection again? What if I regret choosing myself? Take this moment slowly. You do not have to force your heart to be ready all at once. Let us pray, Heavenly Father, you know what I am holding on to. You know why it is difficult for me to release it. You know the love, the hope, the fear, and the pain that are all mixed together inside me. Please help me let go of what is no longer healthy for me. Help me trust that releasing something does not mean I have failed. Give me courage to choose peace, even when my heart still feels afraid. In Jesus' name. Amen. Take a slow breath in. Hold it gently and breathe out. Breathe in courage. Breathe out fear. Sometimes letting go feels like losing. But sometimes letting go is the first time you stop losing yourself. Sometimes holding on feels like love. But if holding on is costing you your peace, your dignity, your sleep, and your healing, then maybe love is not the only thing keeping you there. Maybe fear is there too. Fear of being alone, fear of starting over, fear of being forgotten, fear of admitting that something you prayed for became something that wounded you. The Bible says there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Ecclesiastes chapter 3, verse 1. There is a time to hold on, and there is also a time to release. Maybe you are afraid to let go of the dream. The dream of being chosen. The dream of being understood. The dream of finally receiving the apology. The dream of them becoming who you hoped they could be. And that grief is real. You were not weak because it hurts. You were not foolish because you hoped. You were not stupid because you loved. You are human. You believed in something. You gave your heart to something. And now your heart needs time to accept what your mind may already know. Say quietly to yourself. I am allowed to grieve. I am allowed to release slowly. I am allowed to choose peace even when it hurts. Letting go does not mean that love was fake. Letting go means I am no longer willing to keep losing myself. God will hold what I cannot control. The Bible says, cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter chapter 5, verse 7. You can give God the fear, you can give him the attachment, you can give him the questions, you can give him the memories that keep pulling you back. You can give him the part of you that still hopes things will change. God will not shame you for struggling, he will meet you gently. Take a slow breath in, breathe in, surrender, and breathe out the pressure to understand everything today. Maybe letting go feels impossible because part of you still wants closure. You want one final conversation, one honest explanation, one clear apology, one moment where they finally understand how much they hurt you. But sometimes closure does not come from another person. Sometimes closure comes when you stop needing someone who hurt you to agree with your pain before you honor it. You can accept what happened without approving it. You can forgive without returning. You can miss someone without reopening the door. You can love someone from a distance, you can pray for them without giving them access to your heart again. Take another slow breath in, Lord, give me peace without the closure I hope for. Breathe out gently. Lord, help me stop returning to what keeps wounding me. Maybe you are afraid of who you will be without this person, this relationship, this dream, this plan, but you are still you. Before they came, God knew you. Before this pain, God had purpose for you.
