The Movement Sherpa Podcast, hosted by Chris Luby, aims to explore movement as a lens for understanding ourselves and the world. Chris, a physical educator and advocate for quality physical education, believes movement deserves a broader conversation beyond exercise and calories. The podcast will delve into topics like parenting, health, community design, adventure, technology, culture, and aging. It's like a travel show but instead of places, it's all about Movement.
Hello, hello, and welcome to the Movement Sherpa podcast. My name is Chris. I am so excited to have you here. Let me tell you a little about myself. I'm a physical education teacher, a parent, author, photographer, uh really sort of like a um I've been describing myself lately as a multi-tool in human form. Not now, nor have I ever been an elite athlete, but I've always been someone that's excited to try new aspects of movement, whether it be some wild outdoor adventure all the way to the Iron Man triathlon. I I find myself thriving on experiences that aren't focused about winning, but more that help me discover who I am and what I'm capable of. In fact, I've taken that philosophy into my classroom where I am not interested in breeding the next generation of amazing athletes. I'm gonna leave that up to the great coaches of the world. My goal is to inspire curiosity and help students build confidence through movement. And um, you know, where this podcast is is a long way from where it started because I initially thought I was going to transition myself out of the classroom and be more of a you know official educational consultant. And two months of that, and I found myself feeling like I was doing a job and not enjoying it. So I thought, you know, everyone is always talking about how I won't stop talking about PE. So I'll be an advocate for quality physical education. But you know that phrase preaching to the choir. Well, the last people in the world that be need that need to be told about the benefits of movement are PE teachers. They already know how much it impacts every aspect of the students' lives. So there I was, frustrated, wanting to have these conversations and not really knowing how to do it. The internet is full of these amazing content creators with different aspects of PE. And and I realized my conversations I want to have are are so much bigger than just PE. I I want to talk about all the aspects that movement touches, from parenting and health, and community, and venture, and technology, and aging. And so my wife said, Hey, you want to have these conversations? Go start a podcast. So that's where we are. I want this podcast to be a platform where we explore you know these conversations that I want to have. I mean, think about it. We have entire television networks, podcasts, magazines, and endless conversations about food. Not because people need to be reminded to eat, but because you know, food it connects us to our identity, to our culture. I mean, it's the way we celebrate our community, and I think and I believe that movement deserves that same conversation. Um so on this podcast, it's my goal to treat movement, you know, the way other shows treat hobbies and sports and food, you know, not as a narrow topic, but oh all facets of movement. I even wrote down something clever. I had said something like uh, I want this show to be like a lens that we can better understand the world around us. Yeah, I have to write down the things that I think are clever. Uh, so look, I hope you join me on this adventure. I hope you subscribe and check out what I've got coming because I think we're gonna have a lot of fun exploring movement together. I have the website movementsherpa.co, and on there you can find the written works from Substack and also the cleverly named Sherpa shop where I've put together some PE gear and other uh other gear clothing for you to check out. The next episode is going to be a lot of fun. I want to get started with something that'll hopefully inspire conversation. I want to talk about dance and adults' fear of looking silly. Well, that's it for our journey today. Do me a huge favor. Go outside and lift your face to the sun. Move around a little bit. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be yours. I'm your movement Sherpa, and I'll talk to you next week.
