00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:38.719 The definition is a powerful emotion characterized by a feeling of hopelessness, prompting people to immediate action. 00:03:39.120 --> 00:03:42.240 Do you feel desperate enough to take action? 00:12:14.799 --> 00:12:20.320 Psalms 53 and 134 says to lift your hands into the heavens. 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:25.519 The Bible says in Psalms 47 to clap and sing. 00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:28.399 These are ways that we worship. 00:12:28.559 --> 00:12:33.279 And the Bible says that one day, hear me, every knee will bow. 00:12:33.919 --> 00:12:35.039 Physically. 00:12:44.720 --> 00:12:45.120 C.S. 00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:52.879 Lewis said this: Imagine your dog at your feet, and that every dog is in deep distress. 00:12:53.039 --> 00:12:57.840 And it would help all dogs, your dog included, if you would become a dog. 00:12:59.120 --> 00:13:11.120 Put aside your hobbies, your loved ones, your job, and choose instead of communion with your beloved, the poor substitute of being on all fours, slobbering and wagging your tail. 00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:16.320 Jesus became the dog for you and I. 00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:22.080 I'd never give up humanity to help my dog Charlotte. 00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:22.879 Never. 00:13:23.840 --> 00:13:25.519 Not in a million years. 00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:30.080 But Jesus gave up heaven's glory, humbled himself, and came to earth. 00:13:30.159 --> 00:13:35.679 And the Bible says in Philippians, he was obedient even to death, a death on a criminal's cross. 00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:40.480 And this piptoe to descend from a higher place to a lower place. 00:13:40.720 --> 00:13:49.759 I want you to know pride, the opposite, keeps many a man from the descent to their knee before a holy God. 00:13:50.080 --> 00:13:59.440 A desperate man whose daughter was at the point of death fell down prostrate before someone who could help his desperate situation. 00:14:00.480 --> 00:14:02.799 Are you desperate for change? 00:15:04.960 --> 00:15:07.279 Are you often deaf unto some things? 00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:08.799 Amen. 00:15:09.360 --> 00:15:16.320 When she heard of Jesus, she didn't turn a deaf ear, but many today hear of Jesus and yet turn a deaf ear. 00:15:16.559 --> 00:15:24.799 It says she attended to it, and then it says further that she took action when she saw the crowd, she came into the press. 00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:26.559 This is not a small action. 00:15:26.720 --> 00:15:29.519 I want you to understand her background. 00:15:29.679 --> 00:15:35.360 By the law of her people, her 12-year blood issue made her an unclean person. 00:15:35.519 --> 00:15:39.360 She would have been looked at by society like a leper was looked at. 00:15:39.519 --> 00:15:42.399 She was to be divorced from her husband, couldn't live at home. 00:15:42.480 --> 00:15:49.519 She was ostracized by the people, she was excommunicated from the synagogue and all of the courts of women. 00:15:49.919 --> 00:15:51.919 And so she was unclean. 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:55.840 And if you touched her, you too were then unclean. 00:15:56.240 --> 00:15:59.600 So this was the situation of a woman who was desperate. 00:16:00.080 --> 00:16:03.200 And what was at stake for her to pursue Jesus? 00:16:03.759 --> 00:16:04.799 What was at stake? 00:16:04.960 --> 00:16:08.320 Well, public scrutiny was at stake, public outlash. 00:16:08.399 --> 00:16:12.879 She could have been hurt, she could have been beat on, she could have been rejected by Jesus. 00:16:13.039 --> 00:16:14.399 She was unclean. 00:16:14.720 --> 00:16:19.600 And if she touched anybody in a big crowd, they would too be unclean. 00:16:20.159 --> 00:16:26.480 She was desperate, and her pursuit showed her desperation. 00:16:26.639 --> 00:16:32.000 She was willing to take on all of those things because she really wanted change. 00:16:35.360 --> 00:16:38.639 What is at stake for you to follow Jesus desperately? 00:22:55.759 --> 00:22:58.079 The father came running on the path. 00:22:58.240 --> 00:23:04.079 He came running with a ring and a coat and killed the fatty cath and he said, My son's come home. 00:23:04.400 --> 00:23:06.960 Church, I don't know who needs that today. 00:23:08.240 --> 00:23:16.720 But I want you to know if you're in desperation, the father is waiting full of grace. 00:23:17.039 --> 00:23:18.319 He loves you. 00:23:18.960 --> 00:23:19.920 Run to him. 00:23:20.480 --> 00:23:25.599 The second point this morning is this desperation heightens the name. 00:23:25.839 --> 00:23:30.480 You see, this text naturally draws comparisons between these two people. 00:23:30.640 --> 00:23:32.400 There's some interesting things here. 00:23:32.720 --> 00:23:37.119 Jarius, a man, an unnamed woman. 00:23:37.440 --> 00:23:45.839 Jarius is an honored, prestigious man, head of a synagogue versus an unclean, outcasted woman. 00:23:46.079 --> 00:23:53.279 We see 12 years of a blood issue and 12 years of joy with his little girl. 00:23:55.200 --> 00:24:04.079 We see financial comfort in a man who's got a job versus a lady who's poor who's given all she's had to doctors. 00:24:04.720 --> 00:24:09.039 This woman approaches Jesus from behind. 00:24:09.359 --> 00:24:13.440 Jarius falls down at the front of Jesus. 00:24:13.839 --> 00:24:16.319 Jarius has an important name. 00:24:16.559 --> 00:24:19.440 The lady can't even get a mention of a name. 00:24:21.680 --> 00:24:22.960 So let's talk about that. 00:24:23.119 --> 00:24:23.839 Letter A. 00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:27.920 We see a somebody with a dying daughter. 00:24:30.079 --> 00:24:31.680 Jarius is mentioned. 00:24:31.920 --> 00:24:33.200 He's somebody. 00:24:34.079 --> 00:24:36.400 And it takes time to even put out his name. 00:24:36.480 --> 00:24:38.000 Look at verse 22 again. 00:24:38.160 --> 00:24:44.400 And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jarius by name. 00:24:44.720 --> 00:24:47.759 And when he saw him, he fell at his feet. 00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:54.480 The name Jarius or Jarius means God enlightens a man. 00:24:54.640 --> 00:24:56.079 That's a good name. 00:24:56.400 --> 00:25:01.680 Proverbs 22, 1 says, a good name is better than great riches. 00:25:02.559 --> 00:25:06.960 When people say your name, church, what follows in thought?
