the Alamo, it's one of the most courageous stories of undying self-sacrifice that you'll see in history. 00:02:37.759 --> 00:02:51.120 In the brave fight, Colonel Travis and his men in 1836 took on Santa Anna, who had somewhere between 1800 and estimated 5,000 men coming for a fight. 00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:57.919 Travis had 182 men, and he outlined to the men, you will die in this fight for liberty. 00:02:58.159 --> 00:03:00.400 We have three choices that we can make. 00:03:00.560 --> 00:03:07.120 Number one, we can rush the enemy, killing a few, but ultimately being slaughtered. 00:03:07.439 --> 00:03:28.479 We can give up or surrender, which will ultimately end in the same, a slaughter, or we can take this stand in this place and defend as long as we can, diminishing the Mexican invasion and giving time for the Texas army to formulate so maybe there can be a greater stand. 00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:31.039 So they faced death bravely. 00:03:31.199 --> 00:03:33.840 They gave no quarter and asked for none. 00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:36.560 This was not an idle sacrifice for them. 00:03:36.719 --> 00:03:41.280 The men at the Alamo seemed to have superhuman boldness, was And the response is my favorite part of the beginning of this story. 00:03:53.759 --> 00:04:01.599 As he blew the bugle, signifying that they needed to surrender, the Alamo's response was they fired 00:04:15.360 --> 00:04:16.160 It's our time. 00:04:16.319 --> 00:04:22.959 As we look at the background in chapter 3, Haman, wicked Haman, is what we kind of really targeted and looked at. 00:04:23.040 --> 00:04:30.879 And Haman at the end of the chapter had talked the king into writing a decree that would be the genocide of the Jewish people. 00:04:31.120 --> 00:04:34.720 And so as we catch up in chapter 4, that's the situation at hand. 00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:39.759 And now we're looking at the first point this morning: an ethnic disaster. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:51.519 Chapter 4, verses 1 through 3, it says, When Mordecai learned all that had happened, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city. 00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:54.240 He cried out with a loud and bitter cry. 00:04:54.480 --> 00:04:59.839 He went as far as the front of the king's gate, for no one might enter the king's gate clothed with sackcloth. 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:12.879 And in every province where the king's command and decree arrived, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing, and many lay in sackcloth and ashes. 00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:20.079 And so this ethnic disaster is about to take place, and the first thing that you see is this great site of remorse. 00:05:20.240 --> 00:05:22.079 It's a great site of remorse. 00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:26.959 And as you see the sinfulness of society, this is what comes to. 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:32.560 And this, if you can picture, it's not the first time that there's been a sinful society. 00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:36.399 It's not the first time that sin is mentioned in a major way. 00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:38.800 And I want you to understand, God hates sin. 00:05:39.040 --> 00:05:45.439 Right after God created man in Genesis chapter 7, God would destroy man because of its sin. 00:05:45.600 --> 00:05:47.279 God would bring a worldwide flood. 00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:49.519 And it says that he repented in his heart. 00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:54.240 He was hurting in his heart, grieving over the choices that man had made. 00:05:54.319 --> 00:06:10.639 In Genesis chapter 19, not much longer, you see the story of Abraham and Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah and Abraham before Lot says, How many people, for how many people that are righteous would you save the city? 00:06:10.720 --> 00:06:12.240 And he said, If there be 40 people. 00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:15.680 And he said, Well, I don't think there are 40 people, so let me say 35. 00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:16.800 And he goes down to 20. 00:06:16.879 --> 00:06:23.199 If there be 20 people, if there be 10 people, and God says, if there be 10 people in that city, we'll save that city. 00:06:23.360 --> 00:06:24.000 But there weren't. 00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:27.600 And God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of its sinfulness. 00:06:27.680 --> 00:06:33.199 And I want you to understand, the side of this great remorse is because of the sinfulness of society. 00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:39.680 After my daughter got saved, my daughter got saved because she wanted a relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:43.199 She really didn't understand hell, which is kind of a neat concept. 00:06:43.360 --> 00:06:48.800 As a six-year-old, she had gone to BSF, Bible Study Fellowship. 00:06:48.959 --> 00:06:55.759 Afterwards, my wife went to a restaurant with her and she began to talk to Heather about how she wanted a relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:00.959 A few weeks, months after, she found out about hell. 00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:04.079 And it destroyed her as a little girl. 00:07:04.319 --> 00:07:10.480 She began to weep as a child to know that people were going to burn and suffer in hell. 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:11.759 It just broke her. 00:07:11.920 --> 00:07:23.040 And a few months ago, she had a friend named, well, I won't say her name, but she had a friend in our neighborhood, and she wanted that friend to come to Iwana. 00:07:23.279 --> 00:07:30.720 And that friend, we talked last week kind of about the racism issue in why Haman he wanted to kill these people. 00:07:30.879 --> 00:07:31.839 He was that racist. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:36.720 And so my daughter had this friend and she was Indian. 00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:44.639 And I told her, she asked me about an hour before I wana, can we go ask so-and-so if they can come to Iwana? 00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:51.759 And I said, that's probably not a good idea just to pop in on somebody, you know, right before church and ask them if they can go. 00:07:51.920 --> 00:07:56.480 I said, you know, if it were our family, we would say no if we didn't know the people. 00:07:56.639 --> 00:07:58.079 You know, we we want to know them. 00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:05.199 Get and uh so the next week comes, I said, next week ask me a day or two before, and I'll go to the house on Tuesday. 00:08:35.279 Well, I went around, did something, I come back, and she's just bawling on the couch, face down, crying on the couch, and I'm like, what is wrong with you? 00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:37.039 I said, it's not that big a deal. 00:08:37.279 --> 00:08:46.559 And um she said, she said, Daddy, she said, what if she doesn't come to know Jesus and she goes to hell? 00:08:48.480 --> 00:08:50.399 I said, we'll go ask her. 00:08:52.559 --> 00:08:53.919 We'll go ask her. 00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:57.279 And her the parents, it was unbelievable. 00:08:57.360 --> 00:08:59.440 They they didn't know us from anyone. 00:08:59.519 --> 00:09:04.960 We come in and different cultures, and she said, if you teach good things, then she can go. 00:09:05.360 --> 00:09:07.360 So we teach great things. 00:09:08.000 --> 00:09:14.080 So she came for a few weeks, and in Iwana, my daughter, afterwards, she could see God moving. 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:16.559 My daughter led her friend to Jesus Christ. 00:09:17.200 --> 00:09:17.360 Okay. 00:09:20.559 --> 00:09:28.799 But it was that that sight of sin, that sight of the effect of sin, that thought of hell that brought great remorse. 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:31.759 And I want you to understand that God hates sin. 00:09:31.840 --> 00:09:33.200 It separates us from him. 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:36.000 And the sinfulness of society brought great sin. 00:09:36.159 --> 00:09:40.320 The Persian people up to this point were greatly full of sin. 00:09:40.799 --> 00:09:46.639 And Haman's offer that he brings to the king, it's like the king flippantly doesn't really care. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:51.519 He says, okay, fine, we'll sign the papers, here's my signet ring, and we'll just get rid of the Jewish people. 00:09:51.679 --> 00:09:53.440 And it was an evil decree. 00:09:53.600 --> 00:09:56.879 And the decrees back then it was called the law of the Medes and Persians. 00:09:56.960 --> 00:10:02.799 And in the law of the Medes and Persians, it was a decree, it's kind of signifies the type of society it was. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:05.759 If you messed up on something, you weren't gonna go back on it. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:10.639 The law of the Medes and Persians shared that you couldn't go back and reverse the law. 00:10:10.799 --> 00:10:12.559 So it's like, well, you messed up on this. 00:10:12.639 --> 00:10:15.279 Well, we're not gonna amend it, we're not gonna admit that I messed up. 00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:19.679 So when you signal, when you signed a decree, you were not supposed to go back. 00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:21.919 a prayer that was shared in Congress that got a lot of people upset and gotten some feathers ruffled. 00:10:42.559 --> 00:10:45.120 Let me read to you this prayer that was given. 00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:49.600 It says, We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reserved our values. 00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:55.120 We confess that we have ridiculed the absolute truth of your word and call it pluralism. 00:10:55.360 --> 00:10:58.639 We have exploited the poor and call it the lottery. 00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:02.000 We have rewarded laziness and call it welfare. 00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:06.080 We have killed our unborn and call it choice. 00:11:06.320 --> 00:11:09.840 We have shot abortionists and call it justifiable. 00:11:10.159 --> 00:11:14.879 We have neglected to discipline children and called it building self-esteem. 00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:18.799 We have abused power and called it politics. 00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:23.440 We have coveted our neighbors' possessions and called it values of our forefathers and called it an age of enlightenment. 00:11:36.960 --> 00:11:42.720 He said, Search us, O God, and know our hearts today, cleanse us from every sin and set us free. 00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:51.919 There was a pouring out of people in Congress when this prayer was prayed as people left the doors because they couldn't believe what was being said. 00:11:52.159 --> forth an evil decree, but we have a sin decree. 00:15:08.399 --> 00:15:10.000 Romans 3.23 tells us. 00:15:10.960 --> 00:15:13.039 For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. 00:15:13.120
