Jesus came to give the great sermon on the mountain. 00:01:29.439 --> 00:01:33.359 And uh, don't forget the audience that he was speaking to. 00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:44.400 He was looking into the eyes of his disciples with Christians around, and then probably a lot of lost people in the background, and he was telling them this great sermon. 00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:49.040 But what he was discussing was what it looks like to be a Christian. 00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:52.879 He was talking to the disciples and saying, these are the markers. 00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:57.599 And just to recap with some of them, he said, you've got to be poor in spirit. 00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:01.200 He said, you have to mourn over our own sins. 00:02:01.599 --> 00:02:05.359 He said we had to be meek and lowly of heart. 00:02:05.519 --> 00:02:10.240 And last week, Pastor Danny preached on how to hunger and thirst for the right things. 00:02:10.479 --> 00:02:14.240 And all of that I would say up to that point was probably okay. 00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:18.479 But now he says, you gotta have mercy. 00:02:19.199 --> 00:02:22.960 It was all hard, but mercy, I want you to understand in the time frame. 00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:39.039 There was a Roman philosopher named Lucius Seneca who was dated to be alive the same season that Jesus was, and he was quoted as to saying, mercy is the great disease of the human soul. 00:02:40.159 --> 00:02:44.719 It wasn't real popular to be merciful in these times. 00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:53.759 I want you to listen to some statements that fast forward to 2021, some statements that we make, and let me know if you agree with them. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.680 Statements like, you get what you deserve. 00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:01.919 Statements like, you know, they can tell you this, they're not very merciful. 00:03:26.000 --> 00:03:34.159 If I define mercy for you this morning, in terms that we understand, it's a withholding punishment that is deserved. 00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:37.360 Withholding punishment that somebody has deserved. 00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:44.240 The Hebrew word is Hesed, and it pertains to God's steadfast loyalty. 00:03:44.479 --> 00:03:50.960 The Greek word is ilios, and in the Greek it means compassion and moved by pity. 00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:52.319 So marry them together. 00:03:52.560 --> 00:03:56.560 God is loyal to have compassion and pity. 00:03:57.039 --> 00:04:09.439 In a time when mercy was seen as ultimate weakness, Jesus looks at the disciples and Christians around and says, This, my friends, is a marker of your Christianity. 00:04:09.759 --> 00:04:10.960 He says, blessed. 00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:19.680 And again, that word blessed, we saw divine congratulations to those of you Christians who can be merciful. 00:04:19.920 --> 00:04:23.519 Congratulations to have the mercy capacity. 00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:27.439 And he says, so be merciful, and then we'll obtain mercy. 00:04:27.600 --> 00:04:36.000 So, point number one this morning, I want you in your outline right there to write down this to be merciful, number one, you have to remedy your own hurts. 00:04:36.560 --> 00:04:37.839 00:04:56.959 My son Wyatt, uh, about a week ago was talking to Heather, and for whatever reason, I can't remember if he had off school, but she was alone with Heather and they were going for a ride somewhere, and he said, Mama, why don't we go to Five Below? 00:04:57.279 --> 00:05:02.480 And she looked at him and said, Five Below is like the dollar store on steroids, in case you don't know. order to give mercy is something that we first have to have obtained. 00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:37.439 Letter A is this receive mercy from God. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:39.519 Receive mercy from God. 00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:44.720 Again, he says, Blessed are those, blessed are the merciful, they'll receive mercy. 00:05:44.879 --> 00:05:54.399 2 Peter 3, 9 says this, the Lord's not slack concerning his promises, but is merciful toward us, not willing that any should perish. 00:05:54.639 --> 00:06:00.959 How many of you in the room, if you had to uplift your hand, would say, I have received the mercy of God in my life? 00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:03.199 Absolutely, right? 00:06:03.680 --> 00:06:14.319 And if you understand what that is, I want you to turn to a passage and just kind of get a glimpse, Philippians chapter 2, what was involved in that mercy? 00:06:14.480 --> 00:06:19.680 Look at Philippians 2, verses 5 through 8, if you want to go there with us. 00:06:19.920 --> 00:06:36.639 It says, Paul was writing to the church at Philippi, and he says, Let this mind be in you, which was in Christ Jesus, and hear this, who being in the form of God did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation. 00:06:36.800 --> 00:06:50.800 He took on the form of a bond servant, and coming in the likeness of men, and being found in appearance as man, listen here, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:56.560 In this scripture, there's a there's a real uh deep theological word here called the kenosis. 00:06:56.639 --> 00:07:01.839 And the kenosis is the literal emptying of himself. 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:14.319 Jesus left heaven's glory, emptied all of his self, of his divinity, came to earth in the flesh, and he was obedient and the most merciful act one could be obedient to. 00:07:44.879 --> 00:07:48.160 And so you can reciprocate what you've been given. 00:07:48.240 --> are you saved through faith, not of yourselves, not of works, lest any man should boast. 00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:13.839 Now don't miss the next word, the verse, verse 10 says, But we are his workmanship created for good works. 00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:18.399 So it is a byproduct of salvation to have fruit. 00:08:18.639 --> 00:08:21.920 And so he says, You will have mercy if you're a mercy, because of his great love for us, even when we were dead in our trespasses and sin, made us alive together. 00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:36.000 God brings us into membership of this club. 00:11:54.559 --> 00:11:56.639 Well, I want you to think about a verse that I know. 00:11:56.799 --> 00:12:02.240 Hebrews 11:6 says, Without faith, it is impossible to please God. 00:12:02.399 --> 00:12:07.440 And so asking, can a non-member exhibit this merciful act? 00:12:07.600 --> 00:12:10.000 Well, you have to start at the right starting point. 00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:13.440 God first, church, wants your heart. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:15.360 God wants your heart first. 00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:18.080 He wants to wash you deep in his mercy. 00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:22.559 And I don't believe that any lost person can do it this way. 00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:26.799 He wants a godly reciprocation of mercy. 00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:35.360 And today, there will be an opportunity at the end 00:14:12.080 We're gonna read verse 21 and 22, and then we'll move forward. 00:14:12.559 --> 00:14:19.039 Peter came to Jesus and he said to him, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? 00:14:19.279 --> 00:14:20.799 Up to seven times? 00:14:21.039 --> 00:14:27.120 And Jesus said to him, I do not say to you to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 00:14:27.360 --> 00:14:32.960 And so, letter A this morning, is this the reality of forgiveness, the realities of forgiveness? 00:14:33.120 --> 00:14:35.279 Peter asked this interesting question. 00:14:35.600 --> happens in Matthew 18, verse 23 through 27. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:58.799 Jesus goes on to explain a parable after he says, 70 times seven, he says, Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, in verse 23, who wanted to settle accounts with his servant. 00:16:58.960 --> 00:17:04.799 And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him 10,000 talents. 00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:13.039 But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold with his wife, children, and all that he had, and the payment be made. 00:17:13.279 --> 00:17:20.480 The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all. 00:17:20.720 --> 00:17:25.839 Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion,
