this morning I want you to open your Bibles to the book of Ruth, Ruth chapter 1. 00:00:56.719 --> 00:01:05.680 And uh I am excited to be having the opportunity to speak through a sermon series through this month called Redeeming Relationships. 00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:16.400 And the book of Ruth is a great, small little book in the Bible, four chapters, and what we see in it is a beautiful story. 00:01:18.640 --> 00:01:22.560 He needs his glasses that's okay. 00:01:22.959 --> 00:01:36.159 The book of Ruth has everything: it has tragedy, it has triumph, it has romance, it has redemption, and there's only two books in the Bible named for women. 00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:37.760 Ruth is one of them. 00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:39.439 There's Esther and there's Ruth. 00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:46.000 And in contrast, in the book of Esther, we find a Jewish woman who would marry a Gentile man. 00:01:46.319 --> 00:01:52.480 And in the book of Ruth, we find a Gentile, a Moabitist woman, who would marry a Jewish man. 00:01:52.640 --> 00:02:02.719 It was written in the middle time period of the book of Judges around 1400 BC, and it was set in Bethlehem, the place of God's bread. 00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:09.039 And I want to unpack for you this morning in one chapter three truths about time. 00:02:09.439 --> 00:02:18.080 There's a time of desperate circumstances, there's a time for deliberate changes, and a time with devoted companionship. 00:02:18.319 --> 00:02:22.719 Let's read Ruth chapter 1, verses 1 through 5 together. 00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:23.599 It says this. 00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:38.319 The name of the man was Elimelech. 00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:43.759 The name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Malon and Kileon. 00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:47.680 And they went to the country of Moab and remained there. 00:02:47.840 --> 00:02:54.240 Then Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left, and her two sons. 00:02:54.479 --> 00:02:56.879 Now they took wives of the women of Moab. 00:02:56.960 --> 00:03:02.639 The name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other was Ruth, and they dwelt there about ten years. 00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:06.719 Then both Malon and Killian also died. 00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:11.039 So the woman survived her two sons and her husband. 00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:12.240 Let's pray together. 00:03:12.400 --> I want you to see is that this is a time of desperate circumstances. 00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:36.639 This in five verses is a ten-year nightmare. 00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:44.000 We see in the writing here this beautiful literary device that is used by the author. 00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:45.520 It's kind of choppy. 00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:54.479 It's called like a staccato, it's unfeeling, it's unemotional, it's cold, hard facts in five verses. 00:03:54.639 --> 00:04:00.479 We see ten years of tragedy in five verses, a tragedy after a tragedy after a tragedy. 00:04:00.639 --> 00:04:06.560 No details, no story, just one thing after another, and it says, and Elimelech died. 00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:24.319 And his sons married Moabite women, and Malon and Killian died, which is really interesting in the writing because later on it goes from five or these tragedies and five verses to a conversation piece in the next section of verses. 00:04:24.480 --> 00:04:28.319 It goes from these great tragedies to just a conversation. 00:04:28.560 --> 00:04:35.040 And so we see a beautiful writing in the book of Esther, and it's a time of desperation that we start with. 00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:45.360 And I want you to go back, if you're in your Bible, if you just go back to Judges, the very last chapter and the very last verse of Judges, we see letter A under that. 00:04:45.439 --> then they rebel, and then there's misfortune, and then they repent, and then God gives mercy. 00:06:51.360 --> 00:06:54.160 And so this is happening over and over in the time of judges. 00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:57.120 And I wanted you to see the franticness of this time. 00:06:57.199 --> 00:07:04.639 But it says something else in verse 1 that led a big change in the direction of what was happening to understand something, church. 00:09:38.480 --> 00:09:43.519 Sometimes it said, Whom God loves he chastened. 00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:47.440 Sometimes there's a lesson for us in lean times. 00:09:48.320 --> 00:09:58.799 There's a lesson to be had for us in lean times, but Elimelech, it leads us to let her see, Elimelech takes his family and they go on a foreign transplant. 00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:01.279 He uproots his family. 00:10:01.600 --> 00:10:07.200 They're relocated, and I want you to see what happens because of this relocation. 00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:11.600 It says that a certain man of Bethlehem, Judah, he went to dwell in the country of Moab. 00:10:12.720 --> 00:10:17.039 Relocation meant abandoning Bethlehem, God's house. 00:10:17.360 --> 00:10:22.480 Because there was no prosperity where he was, he left God's house. 00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:30.480 He took his family and uprooted them from the promises and the hand and the provision of God to move them to a foreign place. 00:10:31.120 --> 00:10:34.240 And you hear this quote, and I want to spend a second on it. 00:10:34.320 --> 00:10:38.879 You hear this quote all the time the grass is greener on the other side. 00:10:39.039 --> 00:10:40.320 I want to tell you something, church. 00:10:40.399 --> 00:10:42.240 The grass isn't greener on the other side. 00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:44.720 The grass is 00:10:54.720 He said, The grass is greener where there's manure. 00:10:57.759 --> 00:10:59.919 Now I want you to hear something about that. 00:11:00.159 --> 00:11:01.360 Why would that be so? and when you go through things. 00:11:09.679 --> 00:11:18.480 So as a church, when stuff happens, if we can go through stuff together, trial and tragedy and struggle, the grass will be greener. Look at what David says about Moab, where Elimelech took his family. 00:12:24.399 --> 00:12:27.279 It says this, Moab is my washpot. 00:12:27.840 --> 00:12:30.879 Over Edom I will cast my shoe. 00:12:31.279 --> 00:12:42.879 At the front of every home in those days, when you would come and visit, there was a little basin that would be filled with water, and you would take your dirty, filthy shoes. 00:12:43.039 --> 00:12:45.200 They weren't traveling in cars, they were walking. 00:12:45.279 --> 00:12:52.320 They would take the dirt and the filth of your shoe and they would put it into a washpot so that they could be clean as you traveled home. 00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:54.080 He said, This is what Moab is. 00:12:54.159 --> 00:12:56.799 This relocation meant accepting this paganism. 00:12:56.879 --> 00:12:59.759 The washpot, the dirt and the filth. 00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:03.600 Moab was known as a place filled with idolatry. 00:13:04.240 --> 00:13:07.039 It was a place known with sexual immorality. 00:13:07.200 --> 00:13:12.080 This race of people were born from the incest of Lot and his daughters. 00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:14.480 Moab was the washpot. 00:13:15.200 --> 00:13:18.639 And Elimelech says, There's no food on the table. 00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:19.600 We're moving. 00:13:19.759 --> 00:13:24.320 And he takes his family from the promises of God to a pagan land. 00:13:25.039 --> 00:13:28.159 Well, this relocation means that Elimelech has failed. 00:13:28.320 --> 00:13:29.759 He's failed his wife. 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:32.159 All of God's people were in Israel. 00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:35.840 The temple and the synagogues and the worship of God was in Israel. 00:13:36.080 --> 00:13:37.440 Moab had none of that. 00:13:37.679 --> 00:13:39.679 Elimelech they will turn your hearts away from God. 00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:22.400 Deuteronomy 23, 3, which they should have known, said no Moabite may enter the assembly of the Lord even unto ten generations. they're familiar, but I want you to hear them this morning. 00:20:08.640 --> 00:20:16.319 It says, chapter 3, verse 1, to everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven. a time to break down and a time to build up, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones, a time to embrace, and a 00:28:08.319 In James, I want to tell you a scripture, chapter 4, verse 8, it says this draw nigh unto the Lord, and he will draw nigh unto thee. 00:28:08.559 --> 00:28:10.720 It doesn't work if you
