SEVEN Series: Water to Wine

Mary is literally saying in this, not your or not my will, but your will be done. Yes. Even though she's making this request to him to take care of this issue, she is still submitting to his will. Hi Brittany, how are you?

Good morning. I'm so good. How are you?

I am doing well. I'm doing well. I'm really excited to jump into the second like mini podcast episode kind of for our seven series as we uh walk through the book of John. Um last week we talked through John 1, um, and everything that was packed into that is just it's just nuts. Yeah. There's so much. Yeah. In fact, we we couldn't get through the majority of it even. Uh it's it's but it's it's so awesome to be able to kind of to zoom in on some of these miracles and some of these truth statements about Jesus through the book of John and what we're talking about today, uh, which I'm I've been super excited to hear from you about this, um, is John chapter two, uh, the wedding at Cana. And so can you kind of talk us through what's going through what's going on in this story, um, and then maybe even just share some of the things that you've learned from your time in this passage?

Yeah, so yep, Jesus is at a wedding in Cana. Um, he is just starting to gather his disciples, so he does not have all of them with him yet. Um, his mother, Mary, happens to be there as well. Um, and she presents this problem that they have run out of wine. This is a major faux pas. This is a very big deal. It'd be like a social embarrassment. Why wine then um was a very big deal for celebrating, and the whole town is coming together for the celebration. This would be like a two to three day celebration. Okay. And so to run out of wine, you're probably cutting it short a whole day. So major embarrassment. So she's asking Jesus, please, can you fix this problem? He responds with this interesting statement or question, woman, my hour has not yet come.

Yeah.

He proceeds to um tell the servants to fill up these empty jars with water. Mary says, Do whatever Jesus tells you to do. And so they do. They fill them up with water. And as they take it, and then they're supposed to take it to the master of the feast. Now, this master we would call like master of ceremonies. Yeah, yeah. Um, he's like the hype guy, getting everyone. The DJ. The DJ, really for us now. Exactly. Um, and so present this cup to him as he tastes it, the water turns to wine. What is so significant is that the the wine is the best, yeah. The absolute best.

Yeah.

And he's like, Wow, why would you save the best wine for last? Normally we do this first, and then as people have had it, you know, they're not really realizing, then you can save the less.

Your inhibitions have gone down a little bit. They're, you know, it's like, oh, it's wine at this point. It's not the best wine, it's just it's wine.

Yes, exactly. Yeah. And so he is just so surprised. Um, has the has the bridegroom taste it? Um, and then eventually at the end of the passage, it says the disciples saw and believed, and Jesus' glory was revealed.

So there is oh man, there's so much to this passage.

Yeah.

Um a couple really cool things I really liked was Jesus probably had this invitation. He accepted this invitation on behalf of his disciples.

Okay.

And that's such a beautiful parallel for us. Jesus accepted our invitation on his behalf. He died on the cross for all of us, for our sins, in order that we might be in unity with him.

Yeah.

And so he accepts that invitation on behalf of his disciples. Um he another thing that the Lord just kind of spoke to me, those jars were already there.

They were present. Yeah.

And because they were there and present, Jesus filled them. Essentially, he filled them with himself. Yeah.

Right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00 4:39

And we, as Christ followers, just need to be present before the Lord, present for the Lord, so that we are filled to the brim with Jesus, with his fullness. Yeah. Yeah. So good.

So cool. And the amount of things that we get to pull out of this is just it's just crazy. It is. And so I want to ask you we we all know, um, like looking at this and looking like narratively, like reading through the book of John, that this is the first like public miracle that Jesus performs. Yes. Which which is so cool that it's at a party. Yeah. You know, yeah. Which may even just speak to the idea that uh he wants to celebrate with us and that us being celebrators with him and our celebration being fueled by him is so important. Yeah. And so he wants us to experience joy, the point where he like performs a miracle to make to keep the party going, you know, in this in this story, um, his first miracle. But I I am curious. Mary asks him to take care of this issue, to to to to to handle the the wine being gone. She doesn't necessarily know exactly how he's gonna do it, but she just says, Can you take care of this, basically? And his response to her in verse four is woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come. But then he does it anyway. Okay, like that his mother goes to the servants at in a response to this, Mary in a response to saying, My hour has not yet come as a response to this, goes to the servants and says, Yeah, do whatever he tells you.

I I have heard people reading this passage and being confused about this. Honestly, like you and I talked about this passage a little bit yesterday, just to incrept for this. Um, I I had no idea the significance of this. Yes. Like, is this Mary like telling God what to do? Yeah, you know, basically, like, like what is what what is happening here? Can you kind of paint a picture for us of what this section of the passage means?

Yes. Okay, one my first thing I want to say is like disclaimer. I feel like this response is exactly why it is the first miracle recorded in John.

Okay. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

And that will kind of be explained as I explain this. Two things. One, we could say, why, why does Jesus say, my hour's not yet come, and then he does this anyway, right? Like, oh sure, mom, you've convinced me I will go ahead and do this, even though that wasn't what I was gonna do. Probably not. I feel like that's kind of putting Jesus into like what how we would respond, you know, like, oh, okay, I'll do it. And yeah, but Jesus has a plan. Yeah, right. He's probably a little bit more calculated than that when he's first revealing his glory. Yeah, right.

Could it be? It could be. The other thought I had um or learned of and is just so fascinating, and again, disclaimer, I feel like all of us should just dig into this and really decide for ourselves what we think this means. But I heard it explained as Jesus is at this wedding, right? He his response, he says woman instead of mom. So he has moved from an earthly relationship, saying mom, now to a spiritual one. Now she is just a woman, and so that is so cool.

Oh, it's so cool. Yeah. And I do think kind of kind of going backwards a little bit to Mary's response, I think it could be easy to read this and to see that you know, Jesus says, like, my hour is not here yet, and then she responds with, Do whatever he tells you. Yeah. I think it'd be easy to read that and assume that that that Mary is telling Jesus, who is God, what to do. Yeah. But the reality is that's a submissive claim. That is like I'm making this request to you to take care of this, and he says, My hour is not come. And then she's she's basically saying, Whatever he tells you to do, you do it, whether it's getting the jars or not. Yes. It is not Mary is literally saying in this, not your or not my will, but your will be done. Yes, you know, and so she even though she's making this request to him to take care of this issue, she is still submitting to his will. Which yeah, it it it it kind of goes back again to that that he moves it from an earthly relationship conversation to us to like okay, yes, you're my mother, yeah, but also like I'm God, and so like I need to address this in this moment, yes. Um, but then like this this kicks off his earthly ministry, you know. This this this is what sparks it, and so there's so much crammed into this that's so amazing. Uh, and so I think for all of us, like, much like the jars that you talked about, we want to be present in order to be filled up with what the Lord has to fill us up with, in order to even be to like him be joybringers to the celebration of the power of God working in the world, um, to the to the ministry of Jesus Christ. Um, we want to be joybearers, we want to be priests uh uh pre a holy priesthood for him, like what Peter talks about. Yes, um, it's so cool. This is awesome. Yeah, any other closing thoughts on this passage?

Yes, going back to the submission, I really like that point. Um she knows, yes, Jesus is going to do whatever he wants to do. Though those servants obeyed, and in order for us to experience this blessing, this gift that Jesus has for us to be filled to the brim, we must obey.

Yeah, yeah.

Yeah, yeah. And I think that is well, of course, it's not that's the hardest one for us, probably dying to our flesh. Um, but that is when we truly experience living in the fullness of Christ and with that joy, yeah, we receive that blessing.

Yeah, so good.

Yeah, it's so good. Um, and then the other part, the other thing, the reason why this is kind of like a picture of the gospel is because those jars were empty to start, right? And so before we know Christ, before we decide to follow Christ, we have to admit we are out, we are empty. We have to empty ourselves. Yes, I'm a sinner, Lord. Please me, please fill me.

Yeah.

And that again, just another representation of the gospel.

Right. And a beautiful way for him to start his ministry. Yes, for sure. To paint this picture. And and even just honestly, to to to bring some joy to his community. You know, absolutely just to make a party cool. Yeah. Um, cool. Well, Brittany, thank you so much for your time. You're welcome.
