Politics is looking pretty broken right now and some people want us to believe it can't be fixed - but I think it can and should be a force for good.

Welcome to the Sarah Hanson-Young podcast. I'm Sarah Hanson-Young. I'm a Green Senator. I'm a nature lover. I'm a mother. I'm a passionate home cook. And now I'm a podcaster. But why? Well, because politics seems pretty broken right now. There's so much fear and division and hate spilling out everywhere. And people are really hurting. Because the systems that are meant to help us look after each other just aren't doing the job. Politicians are not listening. Too many excuses about why the system can't be fixed. And the media is fueling division and distrust. No wonder so many people are frustrated. Other podcasters are using this moment to feed fear. Their microphones are trading on inflaming division and hate baiting. Some people want you to believe that politics can't be fixed. I think politics can and should be a force for good. Others would have you believe that you should just hand over the keys to the autocrats, to the corporations, to the billionaires. Well, I'm not interested in that. I want to fix the system. I'm not interested in burning it down. I want to renovate it. Politics is changing and the media is changing so quickly. And I want to have a direct relationship with you. I want to have a conversation with you about how we find solutions and common ground amidst what seems to be such a tornado of division and outrage. One of the best things about my job as a politician is getting to meet people and have conversations about positive solutions, change for good. I want you to be part of those conversations. I want to pull back the curtain and let you in, bring you into my world, politics. So much happens in a week in politics, chaos. It's crazy. And amongst the clickbait media cycle, so often the good stuff is missed. Just doesn't make the news cut. So I want you to be able to see some of that. When we have the chats about what the solutions are and weighing up the choices about what to do to negotiate the outcomes, to talk about when it's important to stand up and to call it out and to hold power to account. Because sometimes power needs to be told no. There'll be a bit of swearing and a lot of laughter. And of course, I'll call out the bullshit when it needs to be done. But that again, just a peek behind the curtain. This is all very new for me. I'm learning as I go. And I'm asking you to come on the journey. I want your ideas, your thoughts, your suggestions. To be honest, I'm a little bit nervous about the whole thing. Day in, day out, I give speeches on politics, I'm negotiating with ministers, meeting with business and community leaders, fronting the media and the press. But this here, this is all new.
