In the same way that a lot of the you know Evan and I both love to travel and love national parks and you know seeing beautiful sights and climbing mountains and things like that. And a lot of times people are like, Man, these pictures are incredible. And I always tell them, if you think the picture is great, you need to go in person. And it's the same way. It's the same way when you go somewhere on missions and you and you're exhausted and you're like, I don't know how, yeah, you're jet lagged, and you're like, I don't know how I'm gonna get through this, and then God starts showing up. You can't we can't capture that on film. We can get some great pictures and we can tell a great story with storytelling and filmmaking, and we can write some great scripts that are great, but there's nothing like being in person.

We'll be talking about storytelling, missions, creativity, and how God is working around the globe. Whether you're a creative, a ministry leader, or someone who simply loves hearing what God is doing, we're glad that you're here. Let's jump into today's conversation. All right, guys, we're back on the Five Nine Podcast, and we want to talk a little bit about creativity in your calling. And so, so many times when people are called to ministry or feel that God has given them direction in ministry, they automatically think that they've got to be a pastor or a church leader. But we want to look at that in a different way and really focus on the fact that God has creativity in his creation, and that the things that he's given us and the skills that he's given us all to do have a purpose in the kingdom, and we all have a specific calling that God can use us to reach the nations.

Everybody has a gift, and so and God's called us all to use that gift. We you know for years I've always heard people say, you know, I what what good could I do? Well, you could do exactly what God's called you to do. The gifts that he's given you is what we all need, and you know, we all um it talks in scripture, you know, you know, we we need each other, you know, we work have to work together as the body of Christ. And when one is not working, then the other's not working to its fullest either.

Yeah, um in Corinthians it talks about the body of Christ, and it talks about why um would a foot want to be the mouth, or why would the hand want to be the eye, or you have the pieces of the body, the parts of the body that are obviously more um visible. You have the pastors on the stage, you have the worship leaders on the stage, you have the the big ministry leaders who are vocal and outspoken about things, and those guys are often the most visible because they have that platform. Um but it does not necessarily make them the most important. Um the person cleaning the toilets at the event, the person who is in the in the room praying for that min for that event or for that ministry happening, the person that is earning money to pay for that ministry to function, the people that are creatives who are creating the content for those ministries to share what God is doing to inspire others to go to uh help fund their ministry by sharing those stories of what God is doing in those places. There's all kinds of different things. And so just because you think that your gift is not the most um visible, because you think your gift is insignificant, doesn't mean that God can't use you. God can definitely use you, and we've seen that I want to talk about creativity in particular today because we've seen that in our um line of work and our line of passion of things that we love to do. We've we love filming stories, we love taking p photographs, we love just storytelling, and the fact that God gives us the opportunity to go around the US and around the world today. We are sitting at Med School's Children's Center of Hope in uh Luanda, Kenya, and we are here, Jeff and I are both here filming for them this week. And the fact that God gives us the opportunity to come here to start with, but we get to come here and we get to do the thing that we love to do and combine that with ministry by enabling uh the stories from here to be heard around the world. Uh it's just it's an amazing blessing that God has given us that opportunity, and we we want to encourage others who are trying to figure out where you fit and sometimes maybe feeling insignificant in your in your gifting that God's got a spot for you in kingdom work, whatever that, whatever that specific uh task may be.

Yeah, and I think that's where you know uh this this is something I kind of steal from. My dad has a ministry um that's called Across Festivals, and they do crusades in different places and and work with a lot of different churches, but they call it an alongside ministry. And that's really what 5'9 is is an alongside ministry. We're not creating the ministries that people are doing anywhere, we're just coming alongside the work that they're always already doing, and like we'd like to say, we're amplifying the voices of those who are already sharing the gospel. We're just trying to amplify that voice. And so when people are trying to decide, you know, well, what good could I do for the kingdom? Like what like I don't they're trying to decide what their giftings are. They you don't have to create something from scratch, you don't have to come up with some new nonprofit that is going to share the gospel in a different way than it's ever been done before. There are those people that have the guys given the vision to do that, um, and that might be somebody watching this, and if it is, they need to follow that. But it also might be, oh, hey, well, you know, I have uh, you know, in like what we do, I have a a gift with cameras. I like to take pictures and um or create films. You know, how can I find people that have that need, that are already doing ministry, how could I use the gifts that I have to help them with what they're doing? So I think a lot of times people are thinking, I you know, I can I I'm not creative enough to come up with the idea of some kind of ministry to do. I I'd say just look for it where God's work is already being done and try to help those people advance the gospel even more.

I think I think a lot of times the word missions or missionary kind of has some kind of sometimes has a a narrow definition. People think that I'm going to go here and I'm going to preach, or I'm going to teach people, or I'm going to be a church pl if I'm going long term, I'll be a church planner, or something like that. And those are all very valuable that God is using those things. God is highly um using those resources for kingdom work. But there's also people that are going into places and using their other skills to come alongside and partner with those people in those places to do the work also, uh, to share the gospel in the in the workplace, to share the gospel in um the other creative ways that they may have resources uh our skills. Um and so I think a lot of times for me, I've I've seen this as I try to explain over the past few years, as we've had Five Nine, even before, we've both been filming with different organizations and ministry stuff for well over ten years. It's often misunderstood. People don't understand, like, okay, so what do you do exactly and how are you doing that? And is that like, how is that ministry? So you're going and you're filming video, you're making videos, or you're just taking photos, or whatever. How does that fit? I had an organization, I was at an event one time, and this guy was talking to me, and I was telling about what we do, and he's like, So how does that how does that how's that ministry? The definition of ministry and the definition of missionary is sometimes so narrowly defined. It it's gotta be gospel work. You can't just be going and doing good things for people. Doing good things for people is important, but the gospel has to be the foundation of what you're doing. But there's so many different avenues of ways that you can do that and use the skills that God's given you. We've we're taking photo and video as our uh example. People don't understand what what we do, but God is using it, and um there's so many times that you you you look at a pamphlet or you see a video online or or there's a child sponsorship video for some organization, or you see something, somebody had to create that. And so just because it's a behind-the-scenes thing that people aren't seeing us front and center, they are right now, because we want to share the behind-the-scenes stuff, but um, you know, that person, if you look at the the example that of the body of Christ in Corinthians, you know, that person who's up front, the eye or the mouth or whatever, the the the most vocal and the most visible uh part of the body is always what people think about. But there's people creating this stuff on the back side that may be the foot that's inside the shoe that nobody sees, or the pancreas, or the piece of the body that's in, you know, the internal organs that nobody sees but couldn't live without. And so doing the things that we do enables those visible pieces to have their tools and the resources they need to share what God is doing in ministry around the world through their organization to encourage people to get involved in mission in ministry. I know one uh one thing we've done, had the opportunity to film a video for Samaritan's Purse, and they used it as recruitment to recruit doctors to go to mission hospitals and serve and different places around the world. We went to to Thailand and filmed pastor training curriculum for the uh Free Methodist Church to take that curriculum and distribute it to um pastors and church leaders throughout Southeast Asia to actually it's their ordination course of study to take that that video that we made and actually have biblical training for the pastors who are either pastoring a church already to get training or who felt called to be uh to plan a church or to start pastoring a church so they can be educated. There's just so many things that God is able to use the work that we're doing, and there's take the example that we have from what we're doing, and look at your life and get the skills that God has given you and see what things that He might be calling you to do and to use those specific skills and the specific place that you're in to do that thing for Him and for the kingdom.

Yeah, I mean, right here could be a good example of somebody who thinks they have no skills of speaking, teaching. Um everybody can do life with people. You know, any anyone can sit, you know, you can sit down and have dinner with somebody and share life with people, and at that point you you can share what Christ is doing in life. But also, if you see behind us, you might even be able to hear uh we've got a bunch of construction workers behind us. They're building a Christian high school here. Um now here it's it's all um locals that are building this building, but I know all over the world people go on on trips and they might build a church, and uh there's a need for that because that's a place that where then God can use that building to allow people to greet together, um come together, and the gospel will be proclaimed and people's lives be changed, and people come to know Christ for the first time. Um with us this week, we've got people um that uh you know run small businesses, we've got people that are retired, we've got pastors with us, but we've got a many different walks of life, ages as well, because we get a lot of times we I hear people say, Well, I'm too old to do that. Well, we got three three people over three oh three people, maybe four people over seventy with us um this week, and then um the rest of us are some of us are under 40 um at the moment, uh the rest are over 40, but uh people get you can't say I'm too young, you can't say I'm too old, you know. If God's calling you to do it, that's the thing.

And it might be it might be short term, it might be long term somewhere, it may be God's calling you to move somewhere and use your skills to to teach um a trade or to um work with farmers or to go and do um some other kind of um technical like position where you're able to be in the everyday life with people and and work with them. Um so I think ministry sometimes we just we just think of ministry sometimes as like inside the four walls of the church and that's the the ministry is the is the uh the staff of the church or the like leadership of the church, the deacons, elders, whatever. Um but that's really where the believers come together, but the ministry happens outside. And so I just it's really just continues every time we take a trip somewhere, every time we get to go somewhere, every time I work with an organization in the States too. I I just am blown away at the things that God is doing, the new things that I see people doing all the time, how God is using their organizations to to take care of children, to to reach the vulnerable, to to um share the gospel with with people who are living in the country who are not from the US, who are people who have other are of other religions, people who have no religion, people who are in you know other places in the world, they're sharing the gospel in different ways, and there are so many pieces of that puzzle. Uh and every piece of the body is important. And our our calling has been we know confidently right now, at this time in our life, God may change it at some point, and but we know confidently right now that this is where God has placed us, that doing what we're doing right now is exactly where we're supposed to be. And that peace and that that security, we're not we're not doing it for the money, we're not doing it for the uh adventure, we're not doing it because we um just want the notoriety. We're doing it because God has clearly given us the direction through prayer and through discussions with people as we work in different places and we just are encouraged, and I I just I can't in um emphasize it enough for people to find the place where God will have you be in ministry and do that as put as much effort into that as you can and just focus on that. Focus like be in the word, be in prayer. Don't you know, don't forsake meeting with other people, with other believers, and and get good counsel and things like that. But don't um don't look at your life and think that well the thing that I do is not a ministry position, so I can't be used for the kingdom. You've got a put you've got a place because God's given everybody spiritual gifts. He's also given everybody skills and talents in certain ways. And I don't want I want to be an encouragement for people to see that whatever that is, that God can use it.

Yeah, and I think that's where you know people are like, man, I wish I could. That sounds so they say that sounds so fun what you get to go do, and it is really fun. It's not easy, it's hard, you know, the travel is not always easy. It's it's long, sometimes it is exhausting, but it's always worth it. And I think that's one of the things a lot of times people say, Well, I when they say, I don't have anything to give. You know, like I don't know what talent I have, like how God would use me. Sometimes God uses you uses you this much, and he gives you this much. While you're on the wh while you're doing any kind of ministry work, I've I feel so much more filled up than I do poured out. Like I as I'm pouring out and giving my gifts, God's just uh making me overflow. Like today we were in a in a devotion with some people, and the I mean it was a passage of scripture I've heard dozens of times, you know, and but I just saw it in a new way. God showed it in into what I needed today, where I'm at in my life in this season right now, and it gave me the peace to know like this is right where I'm supposed to be today. And you know, it wasn't the easiest decisions to to come on this trip. Um, you know, there was a lot of the logistics that went into it and finding the time, you know, because our lives are busy and everyone's life, I mean, you know, there's never a great time to go on a trip. You have to make the time, and um I think God will work everything out if you're just obedient to him. And so that's what you know, I I think one of our goals in in this this podcast, especially today, talking about calling is just to to urge people if they've been hearing that that voice that, like, man, I I feel like God's telling me I should be a part of this. Maybe it's a ministry at their church or it's a trip that their church is about to go on, and you know, i if you're hearing that little voice from God, I think you've got to go and and let him work out all the other details.

Yeah, I think through me saying yes to a trip um twelve years ago, that I wasn't that was really unexpected, uh it just popped up and I thought I was gonna be doing something locally, and it turned out to me going to the West uh to the West Bank. Um that really opened my eyes up to how God was going to use me to do the thing that I love. I was learning at that point still, uh learning to love and and falling in love with with filmmaking, that God was going to be able to use me to do that, but also my heart for ministry and to see people come to Christ, um that God could use those two things together. Um and I've done a bunch of different things over the years since then, also um filmed, you know, for businesses and weddings and things like that too, but all throughout that time every year, uh at least every year since then, I've been able to do um some ministry projects in in different places around the world, and it's just gotten even more as we kind of decided about three years ago we were on a trip. Um, Blake, Katie, and I were on a trip in Ecuador, and we were talking. We're like, man, this is something that we all feel like God is kind of giving us direction. And as soon as we got back, we called you and got I knew you had the same passion. And Jeff and I have been friends for 20-something years, and I've been friends with Katie and Blake for many years, too. And so we knew that that was something that God was kind of giving us a a thought, like just a like a brainstorm happened in that moment, and we started fleshing it out, and we're like, we we together are more valuable than the sum of our parts. Like we can do more as a as a team. Uh, we we work individually, but as a team working together, we can do more than we can do individually. Um, and it's odd being here together on the same same trip, we don't get to travel together a whole lot, but the way that God has been able to use us, um, I don't want it for the notoriety. One of the things with with filming and kind of going back to that body analogy, like this is not something you do for notoriety. We're behind the camera.

A lot of times people will see our films and they don't know who did it because we're doing the like I'll do a film for an organization, and that organization or that person will share that video, and they're the person that they're the spokesperson, they're the person in the video.

There's no branding, uh that you know. Yeah, it doesn't say five nine.

It says if they tell them that that's who they hired, but people see it, and we don't ever get credit for the work. Usually we get credit, we might get credit by the people that that we you know worked with directly, but ultimately the people most of the people seeing it aren't looking at us for the Which is that's the best those are the best ones those are the ones I love the most important. They're looking at the people who are you know who they're who are sharing the video. Um we're we're behind the scenes. We are we're not that vocal mouthpiece that's on stage. We don't get the I mean I've played drums for a long time. I know you've you've led worship and stuff, so being in that position, kind of behind the scenes, run sound and everything for years, and I love that I love that position of being behind the scenes, but sometimes people feel like they're the sound people aren't important, or the you know, the people behind the scenes aren't in it as important as the person leading. And I just clearly want to say that that that person leading could not do what they're doing without the people behind the scenes. Absolutely. And so with us behind the camera, uh it's given us an opportunity to to pour our lives into ministry, but don't we don't get a lot of uh acclaim or notoriety, which I'm fine with that. Um part of the reason we want to share in the podcast is because we have so many stories that we get to be a part of that we don't get to share because they're not the primary thing that we're filming for, and we've just experienced so many things around the world that God is doing that we want to be uh sharing from behind the scenes and claiming.

And we try to want to give a little bit of that enough to in the same way that a lot of the, you know, Evan and I both love to travel and love national parks and you know, seeing beautiful sights and climbing mountains and things like that. They don't feel like they'll be used. Exactly. And God can use, like we said, God can use you. Yeah, I guarantee you God can use you.

Well, that's why I told you before this, I was like, I'm gonna guilt some people and say, hey, you know, so we we at church just a couple months ago we had had a sermon on the parable of the talents. And I mean, if God's calling you to go and you're not going, um you might be the guy who's hiding his talent in the dirt and bringing it back, you know. And and that's where, like you're saying, not everybody's called to be a preacher, and it's like, oh, well, God gave them ten talents and they brought ten back. You might be somebody that God brings two talents. And you yeah, maybe it's not this big glorified position, but it's just as important. God's gonna give the same reward to that person as the person with the 10. And I think that's the mindset. We just just use the tools that God's given you for us. The tool is using a camera and uh and some storytelling and for other people, it it is teaching. For other people, it's uh we're doing some crafts with some kids. They just love kids and they're sharing the love of Christ with them, and they're able to teach them Bible stories and and um and sing songs with them, and then that impacts their life going forward as they you know become adults and they have children seeing how to um raise their kids to be um ambassadors for Christ, and so um that's some of the big differences it just makes. Um it's just going. And I I that's why I can't say enough is just go because we were talking about this last night is uh and I learned this from uh Pastor Jay Wolf in in Montgomery, Alabama when I worked at First Baptist Church there. Uh he some of the young guys he'd come and come along to us all the time. He's like, guys, 90% of ministry is just showing up. He's like the other 10%, obviously, you're a follower, you're you're listening to you're listening to the word of God, you're reading the word of God. He's gonna give you that in that for that 10% of the time, but 90% is just showing up.

So one of the things I think people are going to ask now is like, where do you start? If if I feel like I've got this skill that I want to be able to use for the kingdom, where do I start using it? How do I get involved? Well, the first thing is find a place in your local church to serve. There's a way that you can use your skill, your talent, in some way in the church or through the church outside of the of the walls of the church. You don't have to serve in the church like um space. It doesn't mean that you just have to do a job at the church. Find the job that that you have the skill for and find a way that you can do that now. Um use the resources that your church has to find people that are in need of that of that service or of that skill and and ways that you can serve now. The other thing I would say is um like if you're a storyteller, you you know, start telling stories now. Don't just do it to do it, do it intentionally. So think of um not just completing a task, but you've got purpose behind what you're doing. Um it's kind of the same thing. When I started doing video, I was working at a church, I was on staff as a tech director in a church, and I felt like video would be something cool to learn. So I bought a camera, and a lot of my learning was filming testimonies. I would go and we'd have um we'd have some baptism testimonies, we had some other people in the church, we were sharing stories through some different sermon series and things like that, and I would capture their testimonies. I didn't know much of what I was doing at the time with the camera, but I was learning, and I was able, but I was able to use that learning and the practicing that I was doing with with intention and with purpose. And uh I think people can do the same thing with whatever that skill is that you have. You can't jump into something big unless you started in some small way. And um don't expect it's kind of like the talent thing you were mentioning, like God gave those guys different amounts based on their ability. It said based on it says they they had it based on their ability. And so don't expect to be the ten talent guy when you haven't even started with the twelve talents. I mean the two talents. If you haven't started with a little something, you you grow. And God can grow that quickly. It doesn't mean that you have to do it super slowly, but faithfulness is continuing in what you're doing, and you may see success, you may see a lot of people um impacted, but you may not see anybody. It may just be a seed that's planted, it may be something that's just a small thing, but then if you repeat it and just continue being faithful to the thing that you are confident that God's put you in that place, then God can use that and it will be a resource for people and it can change lives.

I think that's the one of the biggest keys is that that faithfulness component there because it's hard sometimes. You know, sometimes you're doing something, you feel God's called you to do it, and you're not you're not seeing the results that you would have thought you would you would see um and you would see God using it in a way sometimes he uses things in a completely different way than you intended. Um and but like you said, you've got to start somewhere. It's kind of like going to the gym. You know, it's like every you know, you you I mean, I want to look ripped, you know. So well, you don't go in. Five days in, you're like, well, I'm not seeing the results. Yeah, yeah. I'm not seeing it, so you quit, right? So it's like, no, you're obviously we're gym.

You can see it in the very gym version of this. We're gonna do that.

Um but no, it's re it's repetition, it's be is it's being consistent, it's being faithful in what God's given you and what God's called you to do. And that's how we even started this podcast. I mean, we literally and I think would be a great example even to talk about of, you know, you've been feeling like God's calling you to do something, just do it.

Uh about this like four years ago.

We've been talking about uh many nights uh you know, we'll both have been shooting an event somewhere. It's like, hey, you're working late, you're working, uh let's call and talk and keep each other awake while we drive home three hours until 2 a.m. And a lot of times we're talking about, man, we need to share these stories. Whether it's we're we've been working in a you know a you know ministry event where we've been filming a wedding or we've been in some you know neat destination place, we've been talking about how do we share the gifts that God given us, the love and passion that God's given us uh for his creation, um, but then also kind of the faith aspect and the ministry aspect side of it because we both love to travel, we love the work we do, getting to to do storytelling with you know our cameras, both photo and video. And so we kept trying to figure out how you know how do we make this work, you know. We've we feel like there's gonna be some people that could benefit from some of the experiences that we've had. You know, how do we do this? We've kicked it, kicked it down the road, and then we started 5'9 and really started to say we really need to we are it gave us the opportunity that we felt like to say we could start this podcast and we could share some of that that we've talked about, you know, how we use our cameras, how we travel with our gear from a creative side, but also inspire other people, yeah. Inspire other people to get out there and do those things that we love, but then also as Christ followers and the ministry work that we get to do, you know, kind of share that perspective and then also share the stories that we get to see kind of behind the camera. And so here we are, you know, like uh finally starting. Finally starting, and we finally making it happen. We found a couple of uh plastic chairs here in Kenya. Um we decided uh, you know, to wear the same outfit for two episodes because we were that that smart getting started. We forgot to hit record on one of the cameras, you know.

We're just we're just we're learning we're learning every day of the things that God is allowing us to do. And we're learning something new, we're growing and and um figuring out how this whole thing works in utilizing a calling and serving God in ministry. It's it's messy sometimes. We don't understand exactly what we're doing, but we're trying our best to be faithful in it and to just put one foot in front of the other. We don't know what the path looks like way down the road, but we do know what the next few you know the next few steps look like. And so just to be faithful in those and start the thing that we keep saying that we're going to start and be consistent with it and know that if we're doing it to the glory of God, that he will use it and um it will be of impact in some way, hopefully, to uh to someone who's listening to it.

Someone other than your dad or my dad that probably will each each watch it. So we'll get at least two views, but whether we get one m view or a million views, we don't it it doesn't matter to us. You know, we just hope it's to that one per person to do that.

We'll have more guests that we talk to, we'll have um some specific, maybe some gear build out and different things that of how we're doing the the filming and things that we're doing in different places. So we just want to be an encouragement to help others learn from not by our example, but by our experience. Um as uh Paul said to you know, as I follow, you follow me as I follow Christ. We want to show that we're trying to be faithful with the things that God's given us, and we would encourage others to be faithful with the things that He's given you.
