Joe's Notes:
1. Choose you cigar first, then choose a whiskey to pair with it
a. If you aren’t enjoying the whiskey paired with the cigar, you can always pour a
different whiskey or a flight to find one that suits the cigar and your palate better
2. Pick a cigar and a whiskey that are well balanced between cigar body strength and
whiskey proof. This isn’t hard and fast, but a helpful guideline to follow:
a. Mild – Medium bodied cigars go well with a 88 – 95 proof whiskey
b. Medium bodied cigars go well with a 95 – 105 proof whiskey
c. Medium-Full bodies cigars go well with a 105 – 115 proof whiskey
d. Full bodied cigars go well with a barrel proof whiskey (110+)
3. Read up on the cigar flavor profile before smoking and pairing it. This will help set
flavor expectations to aid in pairing a whiskey.
4. Don’t limit yourself to only pairing one type of whiskey with a cigar. For example, if
you enjoy bourbon, rye, and single malts, explore how each type of whiskey changes the
flavor profile and pairing experience.
5. Keep in mind that even with cigars, the flavor profiles can be more bold or subtle than
what the strength of the cigar may suggest. Cigar strengths are not always hard and fast
either.
a. One of my favorite cigars to enjoy is the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial by My
Father. It’s labeled as a Medium-Full bodied cigar. To me it smokes more like a
Medium bodied cigar. That being said, I tend to pair it with a bourbon closer to
100 proof, because I don’t want the whiskey to overpower the flavor of the cigar.
6. Lastly, smoke and drink what you like – these are all basic guidelines to offer advice if
you don’t know where to start. Feel free to experiment to help your palate learn what you
may and may not like. This will also help to grow and challenge your palate to possibly
considering new flavor profiles you previously didn’t enjoy.
Some cigar recommendations to try that are (should be) available at your local cigar shop:

    1. Ave Maria Immaculata
    2. Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Connecticut
    3. Gurkha Beauty
