•Tasha Carter•Season 1•Episode 2
You woke up. Now what?
In Episode 2 of Becoming Unlimited, Tasha Carter takes you into the phase nobody wants and everybody needs — Phase 2: Surrender.
Because after the awakening comes the temptation to grab the wheel and hustle your way across the gap. But that's exactly where most leaders get stuck — not in the waking up, but in what comes next.
Surrender isn't defeat. It's redirected strength — taking your hands off what you were never meant to control so both hands are free for the assignment that's actually yours.
In this episode, you'll discover:
- Why surrender is choosing what's worth gripping - The four masks leaders wear — competence, strength, approval, and busy — and which one is yours - Why unforgiveness is a leadership liability that bills you daily in presence, creativity, and peace - How "letter therapy" gets the wound out of your body so you can lead with a full heart - The transformation from wound to witness: how the thing that broke you becomes the thing you lead from
This Month's Unlimited Action:Name the mask you've been wearing. Take it off one inch — with one safe person, one true sentence: "Actually, I'm not okay." Then write the letter you'll never send. You can't grow with clenched fists. Open your hands. Become.
If this episode added value, follow the show, share it with a leader who needs it, and leave us a review — it's the simplest way to help us reach the next leader, the next team, the next organization ready to grow.
Becoming Unlimited, Episode 2. The power of surrender and why growth requires letting go. There's a version of you that God is waiting on. And the only thing standing between you and her, it's your grip. Not your gifts, not your calendar. It's not even the people who didn't believe in you. It's your grip. It's the things that you're still holding on to that you were never meant to carry into this next season. And today, guess what, my friends? We're gonna open up your hands. Welcome back to Becoming Unlimited. I'm Tasha Carter, founder and CEO of Maximized Growth. I'm also Maxwell Leadership Certified Coach and author of the book that this very show is built on, and that is Becoming Unlimited. And if you're here, it's because you've decided that you're done shrinking. You're done performing a life that's smaller than the one you were called to live. In our last episode, we did the work of phase one from the Becoming Unlimited book, and that was awaken. We got honest. We looked in the mirror and we named where we've been asleep, where we've been coasting, and even where we've settled into a plateau and we called it peace. But if you haven't listened to episode one yet, I want you to do me a favor, my friends. I want you to pause this and go back. Because here's the thing: you can't surrender what you haven't yet named. Because here's what happens after you wake up. You see it. You finally see the gap between who you are and who you're becoming. And that sight comes with a temptation, and that's to grab the will, to fix it fast, to hustle your way across the gap through sheer force and will. But that's exactly where most leaders get stuck. It's not in the awakening, it's what comes next, which is why phase two is the phase nobody wants and everybody needs. Phase two, my friends, is surrender. So let's talk about the misunderstanding about surrender. Let's start by clearing something up real quick, because the word itself does trip people up. When leaders hear surrender, they hear defeat. They're waving the white flag, giving up, losing, or feel like they're losing anyway. And that is not what I mean, not even close to it. Surrender, it's not weakness. I want you to just say that with me again. Surrender, it's not weakness. Surrender is really redirected strength. It's the deliberate act of taking your hands off the things you were never meant to control. So both hands are free for the assignment that's actually yours. Think about it like this: you can only carry so much anyway. If your arms are full of the old version of you, whether it's old wounds, old proof of worth, old strategies that got you here but can't get you there, then when the new thing comes, you have nothing free to catch it with. I want you to hear me again, my friends. Surrender is not losing your grip. It's choosing what's worth gripping. Say this out loud with me. Growth requires letting go of who I was to become who I'm called to be. I want you to say that with me again. Growth requires letting go of who I was to become who I am actually called to be. Because that'll preach to you all week long. You cannot become the next version of yourself while clinging to the last one. Think about the caterpillar. The caterpillar doesn't get to keep the old body and grow wings, too. Something has to be released. And that's not a tragedy, that's design, that's growth. So let's talk about the masks that we wear. So the first thing we have to release isn't out there, it's the mask. In the book, Becoming Unlimited, there's a chapter called The Mask Leaders Wear. And it might be the most uncomfortable chapter I've ever written because I wrote it for myself first. And here's what a mask is: a mask is the acceptable version of you that you hand to the room so that the real you never has to be exposed. Ouch. And leaders are experts at this. We are all professional mask wearers. We've been rewarded our whole lives for looking like we have it all together. So let me name a few of them right here, okay? I want you to see which one is yours. Let's talk about the competence mask. I'm fine. I've got it handled. You'd rather drown in private than let anyone see that you can't touch the bottom. Asking for help feels like admitting that you're a fraud. It's okay. It's just me and you. So let's talk about the next mask, the strength mask. You never let them see you're tired. You never let them see you cry, and you never let them see the weight. Because somewhere you learn that if you're soft, you are finished. Okay, let's talk about the approval mask. You shape shift to keep everyone comfortable. You say yes when your whole body is screaming no, because being disliked feels more dangerous than being depleted. What about the busy mask? This one's sneaky. You stay so full, so scheduled, so in demand that you never have to sit still long enough to feel what you're avoiding. Motion becomes the mask. And here's the cost. And I want you to really hear this. The mask doesn't just hide you from them, it hides you from you. You wear it long enough and you forget which face was real. And you can't become unlimited as a person you're pretending to be. I just want you to sit with that for just a minute. Transformation only has access to the truth. Let that land, my friends. And we're gonna slow the pace here. So here's your first surrender. It's not a big one, it's a real one. This month, in one relationship with one person who's safe, I want you to take the mask off one inch at a time. And I want you to say this true sentence. Actually, I'm not okay. Actually, I need help with this. One inch. That's how it works. All right, now we're gonna talk about the forgiveness work. Now we go to the heaviest thing we carry, and I'm gonna say it plainly, the way I say it in the book. Unforgiveness is a leadership liability. And I don't mean that as a spiritual nicety, I mean it operationally. Every ounce of energy you're spending rehearsing what they did, and I mean they, in quotes, defending the wounds, keeping the case file open. That's leadership capacity that you're spending on the past instead of on the current assignment. Bitterness is expensive. It builds you daily and it builds you in the currency you can least afford. And that's your presence, your creativity, and more than anything, your peace. And here's the trap leaders fall into. We think forgiveness is for them. We think if we forgive, we're saying it was okay and we're letting them off the hook. So what do we do? We hold on, thinking we're holding them accountable when really we're just chained to them. Let me reframe it. Forgiveness is not saying it didn't matter. Forgiveness is deciding it no longer gets to run your life. It's not for the person who hurts you. Please understand that. And I'm gonna say that one more time. Forgiveness is not for the person who hurts you. It's for the leader who has to walk into that room tomorrow and lead with a full heart instead of a clinched one. You're not releasing them from the responsibility, you're releasing yourself from the daily cost that grudge is costing you. And those are two different transactions, and only one of them is yours to make. Now, for some of you, the name that just came up is a hard one. When I started talking about forgiveness, you thought about a parent, a spouse, maybe someone who should have protected you and they didn't. I'm not gonna stand here and hand you a formula that's too small for your pain. I'm actually gonna acknowledge you. Some wounds need more than a podcast. Some of them need a counselor, a pastor, maybe even a professional who can hold it with you. And if that's you, I want you to hear me real clear. Getting help is not a weakness. That's probably the most bravest act of surrender that there is. But please do this for yourself. Go get the help that you need. But for the everyday weight, the colleague, the old business partner, the version of yourself you can't forgive, I want you to start here. In the book, Becoming Unlimited, there's a tool that I use called letter therapy. And you write the letter you'll never send, you say all of it, you name the anger, you name the hurt, you ask the questions that never got answered. And then after you write it, you don't mail it, you just release it. Because the point was never to change them. The point was to get it out of your body, out of your head, out of your heart, so that you can show up and be the leader that you're called to be. Now let's talk about from wound to witness. And this is where surrender stops being about loss and it starts being more about power. Because when you do the forgiveness work, something happens to the wound. It changes jobs. And there's a chapter in this book called From Wound to Witness. And the whole idea is this the very thing that broke you, once it's healed, becomes the very thing that you lead from. Check this out. Your mess becomes your message. Your scar becomes your credibility. And I can only lead the way I lead today because of the things that nearly took me out. The businesses, the seasons of starting over, the moments that I wore every mask on that list that I told y'all about, and I called it strength. I didn't surrender those things because they were worthless. I surrendered them because as long as I was hiding them, they were just wounds. The moment that I released them, they became a witness. They became useful to somebody else. And that's the promise on the other side of phase two. You're not surrendering your story, you're surrendering your grip on it so it can finally do some good. Think about that. Both frames, because this show holds both. If you lead from faith, this is the exchange. You bring him to the broken thing and he hands you back a testimony. Come on now. Beauty for ashes, and nothing is wasted. And if faith isn't your frame, the principle still holds. The leaders that people actually trust, they're not the ones with no scars. They're the ones who did the work on theirs and came back whole enough to help. Your healed wound is your most human, most durable leadership asset. Surrender is what turns the one into the other. So y'all know we have this conversation, we learn a little and we do a little. So let's talk about this month's work. I don't want you to just listen to this podcast. I want you to walk it out. So here we go with the assignment, okay? There's three moves that I want you to make. One, I want you to name the mask. I gave you a list, but I want you to acknowledge which one was yours. Was it competence, strength, approval, busy? Or was it one that I didn't even name, but you know the name of it? Whatever it is, I want you to write it down for yourself because you can't take off a mask you won't admit you're wearing. And here's some other way to say it you can't heal where you're not willing to reveal. So, number two, assignment. Take it off one inch. One relationship, one true sentence. This month, that's the whole assignment. Once you take that mask off, I want you to apply it to one area of your life. Is it a relationship personally? Is it on the job? Whatever it is, just try. That's all that's required of you. And three, remember I talked about the letter therapy. I want you to write the letter. The one name that surfaced during the forgiveness segment, write them the letter that you'll never send. Get it out of your body, out of your head, out of your heart. And if the wound is bigger than the letter, then I want you to remember this. It's okay to ask for help. Let this be the month that you make the call to someone equipped to help you carry it. So here's where we land. In phase one, you woke up. In phase two, you open up your hands. And I promise you, you cannot grow with clenched fists. Growth needs open hands to receive what's coming. And here's the thing, my friends, it's coming. So before you go, I want you to carry this one thing out the door with you, okay? Everything we did today lives under a single sentence. The one I asked you to say out loud earlier. And I want you to say it with me again one more time. Growth requires letting go of who I was to become who I'm called to be. That's it. That's the whole episode. The mask, the forgiveness, the wound that became a witness. Every one of those is just a hand you're learning to open. And if you remember nothing else, I want you to remember that surrender isn't losing. Surrender is actually how you free your hands up for what's next. And that's exactly where we're headed next time. Because once your hands are open and empty, the question becomes now, what do I do to fill them? And that's where we're gonna go in episode three. We're gonna step into grow. We'll talk about your disc design, your disciplines, and how you build the daily structure that makes transformation even stick. You don't want to miss this, okay? But until then, my friends, I'm encouraging you, take the mask off one inch. Write the letter, open up your hands. Don't limit God, don't limit yourself, but come.
