Welcome to the Lazy Critics Room, a podcast where no opinion is too bold, no take is too mild, and no movie is safe from the second look. We're not here to tell you what to think about films, we're here to argue about them, respectfully.
SPEAKER_03One week we're defending underrated gems, he probably scrolled past without noticing. The next we're questioning why certain masterpieces left us completely cold. And sometimes we all agree, which honestly feels suspicious. From blockbuster hits to Indy Darling's cult classics to why did this get made, disasters. We're taking we're talking about all of it. And yes, we will disagree loudly, occasionally, passionately, always with popcorn nearby.
SPEAKER_05Expect debates, unexpected hot takes, and the kind of honest reactions you only get when people aren't trying to win awards for diplomacy. Hopefully I said that right. So if you ever left the movie theater thing and did we all just watch the same thing, you're in the right place. Welcome to the lazy critics room. Hey! Let's get to it. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_01My name is Robbie. Uh I'm from Chicago. I moved here when I was five. Um I am an actor on the side. Um, aspiring film actor, libraries, director. Um I've been in love with the movies for as long as I can remember. Uh middle school is when I started getting to the early stuff. But um yeah, for as long as I can remember, I just wanted to be on the screen, uh on stage. That's where I thrive. And I just found that talking about movies is my passion. I was like, you know what? Why don't I start something like this?
SPEAKER_03Um passion. All right. Yeah, so I don't know. Whenever I grew up, I wasn't really big into movies, but ever since I started working at AMC uh around like five years ago, I really got more into the movies, and these two guys really put me on.
SPEAKER_01Um and now we all work together.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and now I'm really passionate about movies, uh, passionate about the whole uh letterbox, the whole community coming together and just spilling their perspective on different takes. Um, but other than that, I really like going to the gym, being outdoors, traveling, and going to school.
SPEAKER_05My name is Gage, and I also worked at AMC. I've been in love with films ever since I was a kid, pretty much, but mainly COVID really bumped that up for me. I have no hot takes. All my takes are medium because I am always correct. None of my takes are hot because they are always correct. These guys are the ones that have the hot takes, and that's how it's gonna be.
SPEAKER_01We'll get into the nitty-gritty. Uh yeah. Throughout the next few episodes, we're gonna get into the nitty-gritty of what tech films we're into, what our likes and tastes are. Um, but for the first episode, uh we caught the Odyssey. Oh yeah. Um we figured why not start off with a bang? We need to talk about that. We haven't even this is literally the first time we've been talking about it, but we haven't said shit to each other. Nothing. Um we want to keep it fresh, and um so now we're gonna go into spoiler-free reviews first. Spoiler-free! Spoiler free and then we'll start off, yeah, and then we'll display when we get into spoilers, but um we'll make it very, very, very, very, very, very clear. Those of you who haven't seen it, you're safe for right now. Um who would like to go first?
SPEAKER_03Uh I guess I'll start. Um, I just want to say that I've watched it twice already. Opening night with or pre-opening night with Gage, and then I literally, me and Robbie just got back from like two, three hours ago.
SPEAKER_01It's fresh.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's pretty fresh in our head. So we're gonna collectively give our letterboxed ratings on the Odyssey, starting with Gage.
SPEAKER_05I gotta give the Odyssey by Christopher Nolan a 4.75 out of five.
SPEAKER_03Ooh, I didn't know that was a rating, but on Letterboxd, but that's still it's my system, man. Alright.
SPEAKER_01Um I think I'm gonna settle with the 4.5. 4.5.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I guess I'm the one that's gonna be easily influenced on this one. I'm giving it a 5 out of 5. Hey! 5 out of 5. This one is crazy. From from me, it's actually kind of crazy.
SPEAKER_00Especially when we we get into the stuff that we're into. Yes.
SPEAKER_05We're all separated by 2.5, that's crazy.
SPEAKER_00Okay, let's explain ourselves easily.
SPEAKER_05So let me say I could barely sleep the night before the Odyssey, Wednesday night, I could barely sleep because I was so excited for it. I've been waiting for this for a few years. Wasn't really a fan of Oppenheimer, but hearing that, but hearing that hold on, hold on, hold on, but but hearing that he was doing the Odyssey, I'm like, hold on, that's something that is actually interesting, something I might get into. Plus, like Christopher Nolan is an amazing director. Not debating that. Man, whenever I whenever I finished the movie, that movie was amazing to me. I barely had any flaws with it, barely have any nitpicks, but whenever a movie is this good, you're gonna have to nitpick at it to find like kind of negative things. I mean, visually, amazing. The soundtrack, amazing to me. The casting, most stat cast I've ever seen in a movie all time, and they all did their thing. That's what I was worried about because whenever like a movie has like a bunch of A-list like actors, I kind of see the actors instead of like the characters, but no, they uh they all transformed, they all did their thing. A bunch of them surprised me, honestly. But man, like the the the setting, amazing, the story amazing. Three hours. I did not feel it was three hours. I don't know about y'all, but I felt like it was like two hours at maximum. Yeah, I mean I feel the same way. Yeah, like spoiler free. I think that that's pretty much all I have to say about it. Just amazing, everything that I wanted it to be, and more.
SPEAKER_01So it's still fresh in my head. I literally walked out of the movie two, three hours ago. Um, still trying to really collect my thoughts. Not really, but at yes, at the same time. Um I give it a 4.5 out of five. This shit was generational. This was epic in every sense of the word. Yep. Um I agree, one of the most stacked casts that I've seen in a movie.
SPEAKER_05One of the most stacked casts, not the most stacked cast.
SPEAKER_01I've I gotta think of other I I don't want to say right off the bat because there are a lot of good stacked casts out there. But um, everybody did their thing. Uh shout out Ann Hathaway, John Liguizamo. John Liguizamo, yeah. Yeah. Uh they them two stuck out for me. Um, writing, writing was fantastic. Um, I'm gonna need you to get your writing Oscar this time. You got one director, you got picture. You're probably gonna go back to back for sure. Come back to this in a couple months. I may be wrong, but I believe he's going back to back. For sure. Um oh man, if I really had to nitpick, I'd say the pacing was a little off sometimes. Um I don't I'm not saying yes, it was a little long, but just because some parts dragged out when I feel it didn't need to. Um but there's a lot of spoilers. There's there's a lot of action. There's a lot of action in this movie that you know makes a lot of those long sequences you know go a lot smoother. Um man, uh yeah, I mean, this was damn near perfect in every sense of the word. Absolutely. And uh just to piggyback off of what you said earlier, I'm not tolerating any Oppenheimer slander around here.
SPEAKER_05I will tolerate slander, I'm not gonna lie, because that movie is just not for me. Some people Barbie was better, but that's a different conversation, though. That's a different conversation.
SPEAKER_01I heard people saying that the Odyssey is a lot more easily digestible than Oppenheimer's. I agree. Um I think that's up for debate. Um I didn't find myself looking at the time. I didn't look at my phone once.
SPEAKER_05I didn't look one time.
SPEAKER_01I think I only checked like once or twice, too. But I'm just saying, like, I have less of a tendency, if that makes sense, watching Oppenheimer than the other. But again, I 4.5 out of 5. This was generational. Absolutely. We'll get into more stuff, but alrighty.
SPEAKER_03So I rated a 5 out of 5, which again is kind of crazy for me because I rarely give out 5 out of 5s, and I'm kind of known for that. People comment on my reviews saying, oh my gosh, you're shocking the world right now. You just rated a movie five out of five. My last movie, which was also a pretty recent one, but I absolutely loved it. Second most watched movie in theaters has to go to Obsession. That is movie of the year for me so far. We're gonna dedicate a whole episode to each other. Oh my goodness, y'all don't even know it. But yeah, this is uh clearly the second best movie. Um, these those two movies are above everything else, I'd say, by good margin. Um, but yeah, Christopher Nolan did his thing. I can't even lie. Um is Christopher Nolan the GOAT of filmmaking? That's for another episode. But with this addition to his filmography, it makes it a pretty tough um comparison to other directors. Um, was I a doubter of this movie going into it? I kind of was that's crazy.
SPEAKER_02That is absolutely crazy.
SPEAKER_03I kind of was what what has what has Christopher Nolan done to make you doubt him? Okay, the thing is uh these folks uh don't these folks don't understand. There's some films, movies that he has made that is overrated. Name them. Name them, name them, name them right now. I'm not gonna name them right now. Oh, because he has none.
SPEAKER_05He can't name any because he has none overrated movies, man.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, I was influenced by the casting, uh, the dialogue from the trailers and stuff. It kind of was off-putting when I first watched a few of them. But after that, do I regret doubting this man? Yes, I completely do because I rated this movie a five out of five. Is it his best film? Maybe, but that is we'll talk about that later on, I guess.
SPEAKER_05We're gonna talk about that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the only cast that really threw me off was Travis Scott. I agree.
SPEAKER_05Um, I agree. Seeing Travis, I cannot see his character. I only saw Travis Scott, but to be fair, he is barely in it, thankfully.
SPEAKER_03That's kind of how I felt about Zendaya, I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_01Whenever with that being said, we're we're gonna start getting into spoilers here in specifics. So if you don't want to hear any of this, skip ahead. Um, we'll touch the case.
SPEAKER_03Spoilers now.
SPEAKER_01Spoilers now.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna explain the rest of my thing real quick, but and then we could get into spoilers. But yeah, I mean, all the controversy that you heard about the dialogue, costumes, and the cast, you could just throw it all away because all of it was fitting. Christopher Nolan somehow got all of those things to work to make a great film, another good movie. I definitely see this winning a lot of awards at different uh ceremonies. The Oscars included, I feel like it might sweep a lot or at least obtain a lot of awards for many categories, yes. And I think it's gonna be talked about for years. There's some movies that win Oscars that aren't really talked about everything about all at once.
SPEAKER_01Shout out No Man Land.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes, oh my gosh. Um, but yeah, uh going into this movie, I knew nothing about the Odyssey. I'm not gonna lie, never have really been big on Greek mythology or anything like that.
SPEAKER_01So coming out of this movie, never read the story, but this Loki felt like the greatest story I've ever read. Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_03That's not ridiculous. It's not, that's not crazy, but yeah, so now that's everything that's popping up on my feed, on my TikTok, on my Instagram is just nothing but the Odyssey now. And I feel like I've known this story for as long as it came out two, three thousand years ago. Um, but yeah, no, he did a beautiful job with the cinematography. Um he made the film like it was all eye candy, um, just like the backrooms, it looked stunning. Everything about it just looked great. Absolutely. Um, but in my opinion, he just advances it to five out of five with the storytelling. Um, rather than showing uh most of the impact on adventure and the side quest that Odyssey uh does take part on, he really shows his character and the mental side and the psychological uh um problems that he faces throughout the movie, which I really enjoyed. And then again, the cast and all that. Um Ann Hathaway did her thing. Uh Tom Holland wasn't really expecting that from him. I was kind of like at the beginning, I was like, uh, and then and yeah, and then it just develops and it shows that his character making and his character development was just great at the end. And um, you know, Matt Damon, I'm a Matt Damon lover. I love that guy. Goodwill hunting. Probably top five favorite movie from me. And yeah, I mean, other than that, I was just fiending to go back into the second watch with Robbie. It was just such a good movie, and it felt pretty quick for a three-hour long movie.
SPEAKER_01They watched it in IMAX. I sadly did not. I saw it. What a loser! Trust me, I'm gonna be running it back. I'm gonna be seeing in IMAX because that's the full experience. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05We don't have 70 millimeter in Houston, but if we did, Dallas. Man, if we did, oh man, I'd be abusing that.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_05Oh, y'all ready for spoilers? I'm down. One question I have for y'all off the bat, who is the actor that stole the movie for y'all? Because I don't know about y'all, but for me, Robert Pattinson, every scene that he's in, every movie that he's in, every scene that he's in in this movie, he completely stole the scene for me. I really hope that he gets a nomination, but it's gonna be hard because there's so many great performances in this movie. So, but but the person who stole the show for me is for sure him on the woman's side and Hathaway might have given her best performance ever in her life. Ever in her life. Whenever she said to Tom's character, that world is gone. All my absolute chills. Best performance that I've ever seen from her in my life.
SPEAKER_01You haven't watched Blade Miz, have you?
SPEAKER_05No, I haven't, but I guarantee you it's not the Odyssey. I guarantee you.
SPEAKER_01Literally won an Oscar for it, but okay. Um part two coming up. You want to talk about standouts? I'm not even gonna name a cast. What's his name?
SPEAKER_00Jonah's uh Ben Benny Sappy's. Oh, yeah, Ben Safi. Oh my goodness. I yeah, absolutely now we're going into the story. This dude looked like he was 10 feet tall and you didn't see his face. He fucking died.
SPEAKER_03But um Egamenon. I don't I don't know how to say that. I'm sorry if I'm butchering all these freak names, but not knowing he made Benny Sapkey look like a million bucks, I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_01Um who thought that was possible?
SPEAKER_03I was gonna say that like whenever they the the pure like stress and anxiety that I felt while they were opening the doors, and once it finally opened, it was like a Darth Vader 2.0 intro where he like whips out his red lightsaber. I'm like, oh my gosh, this I literally like started tapping gauge. I'm like, holy crap, this is insane. I really enjoyed that. People were complaining about the armor. That armor looked badass. It really did. It looked awesome.
SPEAKER_01I'm usually a big advocate for historical accuracy, but I heard Christopher Nolan's uh take on this where he was like he's trying to make it more digestible for the younger audience, and especially with the audience nowadays that doesn't have the attention span for more than an hour in the movie theater. Now you gotta you gotta find a way to make it more digestible, and I I have no problem with it. Same thing with if anybody who's hating on the casting choices in this movie, no reason, man.
SPEAKER_05I don't I there's some people that were as Lopeda needed from Detroit, yeah, yeah, yeah. Right as she did good, didn't she? Yeah, she did cool, yeah. Did y'all know she's from Mexico City?
SPEAKER_02No, I didn't know.
SPEAKER_05She's from Mexico City, Mexico.
SPEAKER_03I would have never guessed that, but I did not know that.
SPEAKER_02Um uh he stole the show for you.
SPEAKER_01Well if okay, the aura that Eggname on. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, the aura he had stole the show. Absolutely. But if we're talking like straight up just acting, and Hathaway did her thing, she did. Uh uh not a lot, not a lot of people know ball with her, but Samantha Morton, I was a big fan of hers. Great fucking 15 minutes of screen time that she had. Uh that scene where she is turning everybody into fucking animals. Oh my god. That came with still out of left. Not expecting that. Not was not expecting that. Um uh Matt Damon, you're solid in everything you do. Don't kind of don't quit doing anything. Um Tom Holland. Again, at first I had to warm up to it because I'm looking at him like, is this Peter Parker? Um, but uh no, I'm I'm glad he had a lot bigger of a role than I thought that he was gonna have. Um Patinson D1 later in this movie. Yeah, Patinson's great in everything. Um they had barely had any screen time.
SPEAKER_05But she rocked every scene that she was in. She was awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she did her thing. Absolutely. Uh that uh the ship, the shipwreck scene in the ocean where like uh the huge storm happened when it split. That had my head on a side. I was scared I was gonna go into like an epileptic seizure. And I don't have I don't have epilepsy. I had to close my eyes for a little bit. But like all the lightning flashes that Nolan was making on the screen was like it threw me off. It looked so visually appealing. Um the whole Troy sequence was phenomenal. Um that third act, man. As soon as Odysseus washes up on that shore, yeah. I don't think I blew time. Literally, when he had that uh Paul Maudie Betradies moment where you know he reveals himself, I was like, shit, bro, this is this is peak. Yeah, and uh no, uh Ashton saw I had tears in my eyes. They weren't crazy, but he was wiping his face uh walking out of there. I was I was mesmerized. Um yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, so Ann Hathaway. I'm uh a lover for Anne Hathaway. She did her thing, um, her lips quivering, the tear just rolling down her face. She just made it all look like real, like she wasn't acting, like she was actually playing Penelope. Um, Robert Pattison, you just want he made you want to go through that screen and just sock him right in right into his face. Um, he's just such a talented actor. Whether it's voice acting, um, he's always able to change his voice. It's actually insane. And he just shapeshifts into each character that he plays, and it's absolutely phenomenal the way he did his role as the villain in this movie, I feel like, as a villain for the suitors. Um, Benny Safty, awesome guy, did his thing. Once again, he he was very menacing, and Christopher O'Nolan did a great job portraying him. Is that uh Tom Holland? I was just like, man, who is this kid? Why is he in here? But again, his character going through that character development was just great. Him being like a wimpy kid, I felt like getting uh tossed around on that mountain while they were training, but he was able to get mentored by um what's it called character? John's John's character. Um, I felt like that was a very nice, appealing teaching moment. And then whenever he was fighting, um, I don't know who played the guy that was going that with the spurs that was very loud, that was dropping all the weapons through the floor.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I have no idea. But whenever he fought him and was finally able to get, like, I guess his first body, if you want to say it, uh, on screen, um, that was a very awesome moment. And then him being crowned king um for um Matt Damon and Ann Hathaway to leave him and go on their journey of finally going to the west side and going into the sun setting, uh, the sun perspective, and finally fulfilling their dreams of just traveling together and being together once again and honoring the dead in an honorable way rather than just fleeing from their bodies is uh was a spectacular moment. But yeah, that's me for my actors and actresses on that.
SPEAKER_01I also I really love the universal message that they preach throughout the movie. Like uh Zeus's rule, the golden rule. You know, treat everyone else like would like to be treated, uh, you know, uh love thy neighbor. Uh Christopher Nolan puts it really well at the beginning where uh uh Tom Holland is like uh uh treat everyone like you would treat yourself because you don't know if they're a living, breathing god talking in a monster. And I was like, oh wow, that was a bar. Um uh I love you see the shot a million times in the movie, but it's sort of the universal shot for the film when he's on the steps of Troy, yeah, and he's just looking back at the horse on fire. Like it means something different in every scenario that it was used. I know why you see that shot like 20 times in this movie, yeah, later throughout. And it's just him just looking back, but it's in different contexts, and it's like it speaks volumes to me because like there's not very shot, uh very many shots where like it can have many different interpretations and moods, and like that really stuck out to me.
SPEAKER_03I I think that's uh where it highlights Sunday's character, Athena, a lot, where she takes this uh possession of a little random woman, and Matt Damon's character Odyssey's witnesses her head being chopped off, and she just keeps popping up at certain moments whenever he's feeling that guilt of what he has done. And I think that's what I think personally really highlights the film and the storytelling and the script because um Christopher Nolan goes into the truth and the hardship that mentally affects men or women that go into war, I feel like rather than physically, and it just highlights the haunted character uh that uh he made through his choices of going into that wooden Trojan horse and dropping out of it and going to open that gate up.
SPEAKER_01And speaking of that horse again, when they were explaining what they had to undergo, like how how long did they say they spent two days in piss and drowning and like oh my god, I was like, how two people drowned in that. Yeah, how the fuck do you do that? How do you stick that out?
SPEAKER_05It must have been hot as fucking there, too. Like it wasn't metal, I I think it was wood, but still that gotta be yeah on the beach. I don't care what it is, bro. I I I am never doing that in my life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Mind you, I mind you, I barely remember like learning in detail about like Troy and the whole. I just knew that like they snuck an entire fucking army into the city to overtake it. Um, and it's debated on whether or not that even happened. I know some historians are kind of it takes.
SPEAKER_05It's a hell of a made-up tale if it's fake.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh and some people even say that Homer wasn't even a real person who who wrote the Odyssey. It's just like a pseudonym. Like, there's a lot of a lot of that's a lot of stories, though. Yeah. Like back then. Yeah, they'd say Shakespeare isn't even a real one. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, I'd say the little details in that scene, the little details is what gets me throughout this whole entire movie and what elevates it to a five. Like in the horse scene, whenever the um what is it? What what what were they trying to the Trojans, I guess? Whenever the Trojans were like moving the horse into Troy, and like the little details, like where the guy on top was stabbing, like they're not idiots, they were stabbing through to make sure there's no one in there. And whenever he like actually hits someone, they cover his mouth quickly and they get someone to wipe the blood off the blade. Like that that just speaks volume um and the seniority that Christopher Nolan has. And the other little detail that I picked up was whenever they were dropping first dropping out of the horse through the little hole that they made, they weren't like getting up and rapidly going out to kill the guards, like they got out and like their legs were like all limp because they have been stuck in there. Like, you know, whenever your leg falls asleep and there's pins and needles on your legs, like that's what happened. And I was like, bro, like that is actually insane.
SPEAKER_05Like, how did that piece fall to the floor without it making noise?
SPEAKER_03It was tied to a rope. Okay, right, it was tied to a rope and he like let it down.
SPEAKER_01I saw them pushing on something, it literally stopped. So I'm assuming that they had to do that. That's what I was thinking. But um, this other thing, man. I don't know. I I need to do my research. I should have done it beforehand, but I saw the shit two hours ago. I'm just spitwalling here. Christopher Nolan, notorious for not liking CGI and effects, he likes everything practical. How the fuck did he nail the cyclops? That cyclops was um the the the scene with Cersei contorting their faces, like it's all insane. I want to know how the fuck he did that. Um the tentacles uh once they went past the whirlpool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Now let me say something about that scene right there. There was about like two or three moments where I was kind of taken out of the film and noticed that it was a film. That part was a little bit too much for me. I'm not gonna lie. The mountain attacking the soldiers, I kind of didn't buy that, but uh, I mean, like whenever a movie is this good, you'll have to nitpick at certain things. That's more negative I have, is just that same.
SPEAKER_01I was curious as to what those were. Those look like big ass. They're like mountain tentacles, no idea what that monster is. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00What the fuck am I looking at?
SPEAKER_03It's it was of a more realistic portrayal of what it was supposed to be. I don't know what the monsters call it. I want to search it up and like find out what it actually looks like, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I just know that I saw headlines where they were saying that the Cyclops, no one figured out a way to like make it look big and menacing in a practical way with no effects, if if any, very little. And I'm just like, how do you do that?
SPEAKER_05I was on my edge the whole time during that whole scene. It was like what 15 minutes, like 10 minutes, like them being inside of there, and like trying to figure out if they should like go or kill it or like say something, try to reason with it. The whole time I was on the edge of my seat, and then and then whenever Matt Damon last second told the soldier, hold on the rock. I was thinking about that too. If they kill the Cyclops, how are they gonna get out of the cave? Because they're not strong enough to like open up that little rock um whole cover door. But but like I at the last second, they decided not to, and them stabbing it with that hot uh wooden spear, I was not expecting that at all. I would not have attacked that thing if I was them, I would have left so fast.
SPEAKER_01Mind you, I didn't even see this movie in IMAX, but when I heard the wailing scream of the Cyclops in the regular ass theater, that shit had me jump in. I it was whatever you did with the volume, that shit was loud. It was um yeah.
SPEAKER_05What was y'all's favorite scene in the whole movie? Because that's something that I'm really debating on. There were so many good ones.
SPEAKER_01I can't that one sequence for sure. Uh when Odysseus reveals himself. Yeah, that shit was peak.
SPEAKER_05Um wrong answers.
SPEAKER_01That was a top three, top five of Noah.
SPEAKER_03I'd say top three, yeah. Uh top three definitely consists of whenever they opened the gates of uh Troy. Oh my gosh, and bro was just standing there, yeah, horror farming. Um, that fine that whole final act was really great. And to me, an underrated one, I wouldn't, I don't know if I'd say top three, but is whenever they traveled to Hades, whenever the undead army, it was a pretty cool side quest right there. I'm not gonna lie. Like whenever they drank the blood, and then Sinon's character came out. Um, and then um he tells his part of his side of the story, and then it reveals that um Agamemnon died and he got killed by his wife. His own wife, it'd be your own people, yeah. And I was like, holy crap, sister of the opponent. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I was like, wow, but I mean it's kind of justifiable why she killed him because like bro kind of did kill their daughter for a sacrifice, though, but it happened to I don't know if anybody caught it.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if y'all caught it, but I I kept waiting for that signature John Burnthaw.
SPEAKER_04You know, let me tell you something.
SPEAKER_01They said that it was gonna be in there, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I I didn't I didn't know I didn't even know y'all let me know if y'all I thought he was gonna say something about naps. That's what I was expecting. I was like the whole time. Uh yeah. Y'all have any nitpicks or negatives at all with this masterpiece of a movie?
SPEAKER_01I got into it a little bit. There were some moments that I thought dragged just the tad. Um, could I tell you those specifically? No, it's just I was feeling in the moment it was dragging a little bit.
SPEAKER_03Um is it like middle or like beginning? Middle. That's just the I mean he does the nonlinear play so well. I it worked for me. It worked, it worked well for me, I think.
SPEAKER_01I'll put it, I'll put it in this perspective. Um, I didn't really realize why it should be the length that it was at until I finished it. Until the end of that third act. I wanted some more. I wanted like 20, 30 minutes more, I'm not gonna lie. Extended cut. When it got to the middle, I was like, okay, um it's been a good amount of time. Uh we've moved a little bit. Um, I don't know why we still got like another hour and a half of this. But once I finished it, I was like, oh, okay, okay. Let me never doubt you again, Christopher. Um like uh another thing that really stuck out to me was um Odysseus' character development. Not gonna lie, the first half of the movie, I was ready to lean over to you, Ashton. I was like, yo, this dude is low-key a shitty general. I'm not gonna lie. He has no honor, he doesn't give a um but by the end he completely turns around. He has like this moral crisis, uh you know, he's got the guilt of all his uh soldiers' death over his shoulders, and um, you know, he sees that his city is falling due to people abandoning Zeus's law. Uh-huh. And um you know, he's like, I I I I gotta, you know, I gotta improve things. I I gotta I gotta save my city from ruin. Um and I just especially at the end of the movie, I was like, man, what a turnaround. This story is fucking magnificent.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. Um if I were to say my nitpick, my nitpick would probably be the calypso portions. They were probably the slowest out of the whole entire film, I'd say. Um, I just wanted more of her background and more of her character, if I'm being honest.
SPEAKER_01Am I am I crazy? Or did Calypso have more screen time than Anne Hathaway? Uh it definitely seemed like it.
SPEAKER_03Well, if it was her screen time, it would just be her feeding him lotus flowers and just walking around and just saying, tell me, tell me, tell me. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I definitely felt like I saw Calypso a lot hard. Like Anne Hathaway was heavily in the beginning, heavily at the end.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's true, that's true.
SPEAKER_01Calypso was like kind of littered throughout.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I don't know, it's just like those were probably the weakest points. But whenever it comes to Christopher Nolan, he just makes such bangers that you have to nitpick up these like details. But other than that, um, I wish there was more blood, I guess. The only blood splattered that I really saw was whenever they went to that place where there were giants with heavy armor. Oh man. Whenever you slice one of the guys, like you get blood splattered right into your face for one of them.
SPEAKER_05It was right, or they probably could have done a little bit more.
SPEAKER_03A little, just a little bit more, but I really loved the horror aspect of Christopher Nolan and what he adds in throughout this movie. The horror aspect of just um the witch, what was her name? Uh Cersei. Cersei. Her she's shifting race. And uh, Gage, you're talking about sprinkling it in a little bit, but you were talking about how she said that Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Explain that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, because whenever Odysseus asked her to turn them back into uh soldiers and not pigs, she said, Alright, go back in your disguise. And then they turned it into men and not pigs. I thought that was really, really interesting to me. But like her keeping her sister as like a crow, I can't forget that, man. I I can't forget that. What was she thinking, man? Like, release her or something, you can't even talk to her.
SPEAKER_03She, whenever he asked that, she did say it keeps her sane, like it keeps her like.
SPEAKER_05She didn't seem sane to me. She seemed like a crazy witch. I'm not gonna lie. Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. Yeah, but that's her saying I don't want to see what she looks like crazy because oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_03I I think it's just her life of living is that transformation into being like a real the real character of what you portray yourself as is how she lives. And I think that just shows like those men's were pigs, like they did rape uh tons of innocent citizens, they went out there and killed four Odysseys instead of themselves. I feel like they killed out just by the title of war, and it showed that they were pigs rather than humans, and that they were disguised as humans, and that's why she uh said that.
SPEAKER_05I have a question for y'all. Towards the end, whenever Penelope gave the challenge to them to string the bow. I was about to piggyback off of that. Yeah, do y'all think that Penelope knew that Odysseus was the beggar, or do y'all think it was a coincidence? Because I'm 50-50 on it.
SPEAKER_01That's what he was asking me. He asked me the same thing coming out. Um I'm gonna let you give your thing first and then I'll Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So whenever I walked out of the theater the second time, and I was still thinking about it on the first watch, is whenever Matt Damon's character, Odesses, um, is portrayed as the beggar, hiding his true identity, and he goes to talk and describe um what Odessis has been through to Anne Hathaway, uh Penelope. Um there's just this certain moment where I feel like she has caught on and that she knows that it is Odess's, and she opens up the little blinds that she hides behind, and she's like, rally the troops, like rally the suitors. It's time I'm gonna marry someone new. And then they create this plan to hide all the weapons from the suitors whenever they come in. They're gonna lock the doors behind them, and they're gonna do the challenge that she knows that only Odesses can complete, uh, which is stringing the bow and shooting it through, I believe, 12 axes onto a place a piece of wood. And I think that she knew that it was him. She locked them in there. Yeah, they weren't locked them in there, they weren't as cool, or uh an attack plan to have them all confined into one room and allowing Odyssey to kill them all just like with one bow or just killing him one by one with hand. And I think she knew that that's just this is just my um interpretation of what I thought, or whatever you want to say about it, but that's what I thought happened. Well, a theory.
SPEAKER_05One thing that I have crit one thing that I've criticized Christopher Nolan for in the past is fight sequences. Fight see fight choreography to me is not Nolan's strong suit, and like it never has been to me, but uh the but but but hold on, but but the fight the fight choreography in in the Odyssey top tier, I'm not gonna lie. I'm so glad that he finally improved that from his previous work. The fight scene with Tom Holland and the person trying to drop down the weapons and Odysseus killing all those soldiers and having them kneel because they knew that they didn't have a chance. And Pattinson's character, knowing that he has no chance, trying to send uh all the soldiers and not going himself showing how much of a coward he is, that was just beautifully done to me.
SPEAKER_01Now, I agree with all that, but when you criticize his fighting choreography, are we not gonna act like Bane versus Batman in Dark Knight Risers? Is like a top Bane versus it's an all-time fight scene.
SPEAKER_05I completely disagree. The fighting guys were gonna go unattended the fighting with Bane versus Batman, that scene is memorable because of the background, because of the acting, and because of Bane's dialogue. The fighting in that actual scene looks so goofy, and nothing looks like it connects. When he when Bane breaks Batman's back, it doesn't even bend at all. It's as stiff as a board. So, how how in the world did that break his back off of that weak stuff? And whenever Batman was hitting Bane, it didn't even look like it was connecting. That scene is great, I agree, but it's because of Bane's dialogue, not because of the fighting.
SPEAKER_01I really the end scene with Ann Hatley was really the last thing I wanted to feed back on. But unless there's any final thoughts on it, we can uh I mean incorporate it into knownography.
SPEAKER_05I just wish that I wish that Travis Scott was not in it. But to be fair, like he's only there for like two minutes, so it's not that big of a deal. But but like whenever whenever I saw it, I just saw Travis. We didn't get the character's name or anything. I just saw Travis Scott, but that's like one little nitpick I have.
SPEAKER_03Um I'm not gonna lie, that's how I felt about Zendaya. Like, whenever she first popped up on my screen, I'm like, oh, Zendaya, it's Zendaya. Like, she I don't know, man. Like, I feel like you're hating so much on Travis Scott is just showing.
SPEAKER_05I'm not hating on Travis, but that was really out of left field.
SPEAKER_03I like how he incorporated um Travis Scott, in my opinion, because like it is out of left field. Like, it is like, what is a rapper doing there? I wish he could he could have you used like or utilized a different rapper, maybe someone that's like less known, so that you're not like hit in the face by like that's Travis Scott on the street.
SPEAKER_01He his character is a poet, and he's trying to resume with a younger audience, you know. Exactly.
SPEAKER_05But they don't really tell you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that is true.
SPEAKER_05Uh word for him to I like his music, but please never act again. That's my thoughts about it. I like his act. That's my thoughts about it. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um, but I mean, before we like we end this off or anything, I would like to speak about the my perspective on the final act. That final act, like, I was levitating. It was actually so amazing whenever I first watched it and IMAX McGage. I was just tapping him on the leg the whole time. I'm like, bro, bro, bro, bro, bro. And then like, I don't know. Um, it really shows Robert Pattison's character as a whole throughout it. Um, even before the fight, the true fight actually started happening whenever they were doing the test. He didn't even want to try the challenge himself. He tried to do his whole manipulation and back talk that he usually does throughout that whole entire film to get it out of his way from humiliate uh humiliating his character because he knew that he couldn't even do it. He knew that he is a weak being in that movie, and it was so funny. Whenever we do transition and fast forward into the fight scene, everyone else was fighting, bro, just in the back.
SPEAKER_02Whenever a new weapon drops, he's like I was really like I'm like, bro, you go ahead and go up there and fight him. He wasn't about that line. He was making out great comms.
SPEAKER_05I'm like, oh my gosh, like man, that line that that Odysseus told him whenever he before he killed him, yeah, sending him to Hades, yeah, that was just and then he shoved the little wooden piece down his throat for Sinon, bro.
SPEAKER_03Oh my, he really got it back in blood, man. I'm not gonna lie. And then another part is whenever he's circled around by all the guys with weapons and he only has a piece of arrow, and then that father and son connection. I feel like that's like compared to LeBron James and Bronny both on the court together. He drops the sword, he's like, Dad! He drops the sword, broke his grabs the sword, kills all of them in that scene.
SPEAKER_05He would have dropped that, it might have been over, it might have been over. He would have dropped that, yes, dude.
SPEAKER_03And then after that circle was slain, everyone's on their freaking knees kneeling down, and they're like, bro, you're the goat, bro. Chill, I want to live. And they all bow down to him, and it shows his character in the end. And I really like him as the beggar with the hood over his face, covering up his face, and his all black. Like, and you just hear his deep bass voice, and like, oh my goodness, like this guy has so much aura, too. Like, they were just aura farming all around. And transitioning back to the first 10 minutes of the film, talking about not showing his face. I this is another little detail that I really liked and I picked up. Um, the first 10 minutes, Nolan doesn't really show Matt Damon's face, they only show like his little beard. Um, he zooms out from him, you only see his silhouette, and it really just gives the foreshadow whenever he finally strings the bow with the kids while he's hunting for that boar. They finally show his face after he strings it, just like how they finally foreshadow. He finally strings the bow, boom, hand at Ann Athaway turns around. Oh my gosh, that's him. He just strung the bow. And then boom, he the the I forgot who who was that actor um that was like also one of Corey Hawkins. Oh yeah, he was like, and then boom, it right to the neck.
SPEAKER_00I'm like, damn it. I was not expecting that. I was not expecting that it happened so fast. Yeah, he was, he's kicking the dog. We're talking about the dog, dude. That dog was important, bro.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. That third act whenever the dog passes away the same minute that it finally sees its owner. The the whole reason that it's been clinging on to life at all is to see its owner is then Odysseus, uh Odysseus, Odysseus.
SPEAKER_02Odysseus.
SPEAKER_05As soon as he gets back with Penelope and he's in Penelope's arms, he passes away. That was beautiful to me that they incorporated that with both of them. That was just so good to me.
SPEAKER_03Dude, I forgot the dog. Dude, I totally forgot about the dog, but that part almost got me. I've never cracked in a movie, by the way. We'll talk about that later. So crazy. But yeah, I saw whenever I saw this in Robbie Tearing up, I'm like, this is funny. But um, yeah, no, so but I honestly like the the string also plays a major factor. It shows the true character of Odysseus. Um, he's every time he's before he's about to hunt or go to war, he strings it out to give his prey a warning, to show the sportsmanship, um, to give them a chance and show them mercy. And I think that really makes him as a character and shows his true self throughout the world.
SPEAKER_05Where does the Odyssey rank in y'all's 2026 movies? Because for me, it's number one.
SPEAKER_01It's number one for sure.
SPEAKER_05This is number one for me.
SPEAKER_01I'm more I'm I'm you gotta you gotta keep it. I'm I'm more curious where y'all rank it in Nolan's film. Okay, that's where we're gonna end.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, um, I have this as number two. I'm not gonna lie, guys, obsession is just that's so crazy. It's just obsession is really good, but over that's fun. It's such a fun movie where you can just re-watch over and over, and then the history, well, not history, but just the background behind it. Two you I it's so inspiring. Two YouTubers, a great duo just coming out of just like producing short films and stuff, and just like it kind of it kind of reflects onto us starting in a garage and hopefully making it big. Um, it's just truly inspiring. 750,000 um budget, and it's about it's at like 430 million now, 420 million from what I saw last. It's just truly breathtaking. And then just I love when unknown actors or just actors that don't have these big names, A-list actors like this cast do great performances and finally get their shine, and it's just truly amazing to me seeing that, and that's why that's some of the factors why I have obsession ranked above the Odyssey. But the Odyssey is so close, these two, and then like Project Hill Mary is like a close margin, and then the invites, also great. You gotta watch that still, but yeah, invite for sure, top five for the five.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah, invite for sure.
SPEAKER_01I got obsession at number three for the year, but we'll get into the nitty-gritty of that movie in a future episode.
SPEAKER_05I don't even have obsession like top ten for me this year, and I'm crazy.
SPEAKER_00That's crazy.
SPEAKER_05I do love it, but there's movies that I really like more ahead of it.
SPEAKER_01But no, okay, we're gonna go in order. Where do y'all rank the Odyssey in no one's familiar?
SPEAKER_05I have it as uh I have it as number two. Number two, I have it as number two only behind the dark knight. But but you know, I I I I I have it just had Interstellar, barely though, but like, man, but like I love the Dark Knight so much. The only bad thing about that movie is the fighting to me, but except for that, I love the Dark Knight so much. But but like I I was really thinking about the Odyssey versus Interstellar. That's really tough for me, but I think I gotta give it to the Odyssey. I'm not gonna lie. I I think I think it's gonna stand the attesta time and have less haters than Interstellar when it's all said and done.
SPEAKER_01My top three Nolan films can switch every now and then. Um he hasn't made one movie where it's not a banger. Agreed. Truthfully. Um Dark Knight, easily number one for me though. Yeah, um Dark Knight is just timeless. Like damn near 20 years later, and the people still call it the greatest comic book movie ever made. Absolutely. Um man. I might gotta put um the Odyssey at three, maybe four. Um Dark Knights number one, and then two. I probably gotta give two. No, I wouldn't go number two. I'm gonna go number two.
SPEAKER_05Oh, thank you. Because I was scared you were gonna say one movie on there.
SPEAKER_01Insomnia is great, it's underrated. Watch it. Robin Williams, um great. The prestige, timeless is great. Umer, top five movie of the decade so far. I will not say that. That's so crazy. That's so crazy.
SPEAKER_05It's so boring and too long. I do not like it.
SPEAKER_01Um Oppenheimer and the Odyssey right now are kind of interchangeable for me at two and three. Um I I gotta give the Odyssey another watch, especially in IMAX. Absolutely. Um, but I got Dark Knight and Oppenheimer and the Odyssey. They're they're interchangeable.
SPEAKER_05No Interstellar. No love for Interstellar.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna get into that later on. Oh no, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_05No, no, no. We can get into it now. What we can get into it now. Where does Interstellar rank in your Nolan uh filmography?
SPEAKER_01Cool five or six movies.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's crazy! Five or six? Name me five Nolan movies that are better than Interstellar right now.
SPEAKER_01Name me five Oppenheimer Odyssey.
SPEAKER_05Oppenheimer! Oh, that's so crazy! Oppenheimer does not touch Interstellar.
SPEAKER_01Memento Memento is a sleeper. Um and the pr the prestige.
SPEAKER_05I love the prestige, so it's hard to hate on that, but my thing with Interstellar.
SPEAKER_01I don't think it's a bad movie. Don't come from my head. I know it has a big cult following. Interstellar is fantastic. It's an all-timer space movie, but it's not the best space movie ever made, and it's not the best Christopher Nolan movie. I will not stand for it.
SPEAKER_05But it's not five or six, though. That's insane. It's not what makes Oppenheimer better than it.
SPEAKER_01Oppenheimer, it's more it's more engaging to me, I'm not gonna lie. And the writing, the writing is way no, no, I'm not gonna say that. It doesn't drag a lot of. Let me not disrespect it. Interstellar's writing is good. Um I think Interstellar's it struggles with a little bit more pacing issues than Oppenheimer personally. Um and Oppenheimer is just like, aside from the black hole scene and the docking scene, which is generational in Interstellar, um, Oppenheimer was just a lot more visually and audibly like appealing to watch.
SPEAKER_05Did you just did you just say Oppenheimer is more visually appealing to watch than Interstellar? I mean, it's more consistent. Oh, that's so cra- Okay, so if something is mid, but it's more consistent, does that mean that it's better than Interstellar vision?
SPEAKER_01Maybe another shot that's as beautiful, if not a little better, than the docking scene in Interstellar in the black hole. Like what other visually appealing scenes besides like when they're on Miller's planet, maybe, um, that are like But the Oppenheimer's highs do not touch those highs of Interstellar! No, they don't, but they're a lot, they're a lot more consistent, and I'm but just because something's more consistent does not mean that makes it automatically that's like finding a really shitty movie that has some really good highs and then just ranking it above a better movie.
SPEAKER_05Like I I find that ill- Are you calling Interstellar a bad movie?
SPEAKER_01No, I told you no.
SPEAKER_05That's what it's like. Ashton, what's your thoughts? Which movie's better for you?
SPEAKER_03I'll I'll get into it whenever I explain my okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, bottom line, Dark Knight, Oppenheimer and Odyssey are interchangeable at two or three. Um, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so after their like five-minute argue and their sellers number one. Um for that's fair. That is so valid, that's fair. And even Lion Man, that thing is life-changing. Absolutely. How do people hate on that movie? I don't know.
SPEAKER_05No, no, no, not you, but like there is people that really hate that movie. That's crazy to me.
SPEAKER_00I haven't found another person that hate that. There's so many people online that hate on it.
SPEAKER_05And I I have no idea why. I mean, Timothy Chalamet is in this, that kind of brings it down a little bit, but we'll get into that later. And we'll both have you. We'll get into that later.
SPEAKER_00We'll get into that.
SPEAKER_03Um, man, it's really I had at first I wanted to rank the Odyssey at a 4.5, but that first watch really did something for me. So I'm gonna have it as number two because those are the only uh five out of five movies from Nolan from for me. We all have it at two, pretty good. A close third one was that was interchanging it between is the prestige, um, Hugh Jackman, and Christian Bell, and that just dude. No dark knight. Um, where's the dark knight for you, Ashton? Please let us know. He's a dark knight hater. I can't find it. The only movies that I haven't seen from Nolan are Tenet, which I've been really wanting to watch. I haven't seen Tenet either. I obviously I've heard that it's definitely overhated, yes. And then uh Dunkirk.
SPEAKER_01Um Dunkirk is just long.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. I feel like it's never been it's never been too appealing to me, I'm not gonna lie. Like, there's so many better war movies out there, but I haven't watched it, so I can't really put it in my two cents. But yeah, um, that's gonna be my ranking for Nolan films. Um, I do want to kind of end it off with this, um, because Gage brought it up uh about people hating Interstellar. Um, whenever I got done with my second watch, I've I went on to like different people's reviews because I like to hear other people's perspective and stuff. And like there's so many content creators out there that just have been rating it a great movie, and I think it is because it is a great movie. Absolutely. And I just scroll through the comments, and all I see is paid review this, paid review that. And I don't know if it's rage bait or anything, but like all the people that are hating and claiming that they won't watch it because it's not like historically accurate. It's like don't ever watch a movie and review it ever again. You shouldn't be allowed in theaters if you're just basing it off of historic um accuracy. Because these filmmakers, I'm not gonna lie, bro, they are rich as heck. They don't care about your opinion if you're not gonna watch it or not. Millions of other people are gonna watch it. It's their perspective on it, and I think that's what makes cinema and filmmaking just uh its own unique thing because you get to see different people's perspective on their um their um like perspective on a certain subject or a certain story. And we like saw this earlier in the year for Wethering Heights. Um Weathering Heights, it's literally like apparently it's nothing like the story. I've never read the book. I don't really read guys. That's why I love movies so much. I don't read. Um, and people hate on it because they're like, oh my gosh, this is nothing like the book. Though because it's through the perspective on how the director shawl it, and that's how she put it out into film, because she I think it it was her perspective or her like uh own thought of it whenever she was yeah, interpretation whenever she was reading it as a kid. Like obviously it's not gonna be historically accurate to the or like accurate to the book.
SPEAKER_05No one's making you watch it.
SPEAKER_03And no one's making you watch it that is true, no one's a decision, no one's forcing you, and that Wuthering Heights it had quotations around the title. I don't know if most people impete that, but there's quotation marks, it's their perspective on how they view the movie. And I also feel like it's just like certain adaptations, these stories have been uh told two, three thousand years ago, so many years ago. Obviously, it's gonna change throughout the years, it's gonna change throughout other people saying other things. It's all not gonna be the same thing to the straight origins, and it's all gonna be spread around, spread around through different sayings, through different people's um perspectives again. But yeah, I I can't, I just hate whenever people are like, oh, I'm boycotting this film. Like, no, you're not, bro.
SPEAKER_01It shows because I'm glad you mentioned it. There is a lot if you go on Twitter. People love to, especially before the Odyssey came out, they were hating on this from the get go. Yeah, for all that nitpicky reasons. But if you look at the audience score, look it up right now, it's like 97%. It's like deservedly so, yeah. Critics 96, yeah, audiences 97, like audiences are generally loving it. So it's just a bunch of incels online that are just know nothing about movies, they're just hopping on the next dick routing train, you know, to feel relevant. So yeah, it's if you haven't seen it, just don't comment on it. It's just it's not productive.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, what's your problem with the Dark Night Ash?
SPEAKER_01I thought we were ending it off with that.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, no, no, no, please let us know. Please let us know. We can get into that at another time because we we have we have one last thing to touch on.
SPEAKER_01Uh to this is gonna be something that we attacked a few times throughout the year to kind of give updates, but we started a challenge. Yes, yes, we did.
SPEAKER_03Um it was an olive garden, by the way.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Um it wasn't our idea. We're not claiming it's our idea, we're just we're participating in the world. In the challenge, yeah. Um, it's the box office challenge. Each of us drafted six movies, six movies, um, and you know, depending on how much it makes the box office, whoever has uh the most cumulated like box office grossings of the year by December 31st, 2026, or the winner. Um then the loser. That's the fun part. Um, but we're gonna think of a punishment. But um, we're gonna air out each of our movies so we can keep keep up with it. Y'all can keep up with it too.
SPEAKER_03Um we're gonna go in order of the way it was drafted. Oh, sorry, yeah. So Gage uh had first picked up.
SPEAKER_05I had the very first pick in the 2026 box office movie draft Ladies Critics Room. I chose Spider-Man brand new day. Unsurprisingly, that would have been y'all's number one, I'm sure. Yeah, yeah. Unsurprisingly, yeah. Robbie.
SPEAKER_01Um, my first pick, um Minions and Monsters. Um Minions and Monsters.
SPEAKER_05Have you seen Minions and Monsters?
SPEAKER_01No, I haven't. Oh wow!
SPEAKER_05It's so bad that he doesn't even want to watch his own movie. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_01It made over a billion dollars. Now it's like uh made like 900 mil, but yeah. It was push like that's still money. I I don't know. Uh if you checked the box office recently, it's not doing well, so I kind of regret it.
SPEAKER_03At like 290, I think we're on the two. Um so yeah, I just want to clarify also, we did start this challenge, or we did start a drafting this um challenge in April. So all the movies beforehand we couldn't draft anyway. Super Mario or uh it was just after Super Mario were basically and the session was like coming out the same year pretty much. Um so my first pick, I had the third pick, and we did a snake draft. So right after I picked my next pick for the second round, my first pick was Toy Story 5. That's huge. Um, I wanted to go to the animated toys kids route because I know just like a bunch of families, they're gonna spend a whole bunch of money. Absolutely. But I feel like that is such a bigger franchise than Moana and um the minions franchise, so that's why I rolled with that one. And then my second pick right after that is your boy, the Odyssey Christopher Nolan. Um, it's his name, Christopher Nolan. That's a log for a building.
SPEAKER_01That's gonna bring in and then I came in with my second pick, uh Disney live action. We need Nolan's Big Bang. I don't know how it's doing right now. I'm not doing it.
SPEAKER_02It's at 111 million. Say the movie first 111 million, and it's been two and a half weeks since a live action Milana.
SPEAKER_01I I I figured I'd hop on that train.
SPEAKER_05Have you seen Moana?
SPEAKER_02No, he doesn't even watch his own movies. Uh I've fallen off recently.
SPEAKER_05Um, you know, that's fair, that's fair. And then for my number two pick, I got a lot of hate for this, but but I I'm really happy with it. I chose Star Wars, Mandalorian, and Grogu. It's at like 340 right now. I expected it to be higher, but but it's not flopping as much as like some other movies this year. Fire movie, but absolutely, absolutely part that's not performing as well. Absolutely. And have you seen that movie? No. This guy here. And then my third pick I had back to back. I chose Michael, which is over a billion right now. Thank goodness, because that's saving me right now. And it's funny, and Michael's probably like my third favorite movie this year.
SPEAKER_03I rechecked it and it went back to 900. I'm not gonna lie, it is.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, no, no, you don't gotta check again.
SPEAKER_01Um, Robbie? Uh so my next pick. Um, granted, I'm only I'm only gonna have two weeks to get the revenue.
SPEAKER_05You have to get a caveat for every movie that he drafted.
SPEAKER_01I'm confident that the hype is gonna be there because it's a Bargenheimer 2.0, Avengers Doomsday. Not that. Within two weeks, it's making at least two to four hundred million dollars in that. Probably more, probably a lot more, probably more. And I'm like that that adds to my total. It does. I'm accepting it.
SPEAKER_05Endgame made a billion in like five days.
SPEAKER_01Probably can't, yeah.
SPEAKER_03No, that pick definitely makes up for your two that are freaking tanking right now. Um, my third pick was I'm an Ann Hathaway lover. As soon as I saw it, I was it was kind of at the brink of the time when it was coming out. It was uh the double wars product.
SPEAKER_05That made a lot more money than I was expecting it to make. It's at like 678 right now or something like that. 688, I believe. Oh, sorry. It's not it's not loading right now. I was not expecting it to make that high numbers.
SPEAKER_03It's at 688 right now. Um, Toy Story 5 is at 891. Oh man, and Michael went back down to 980, but it was at 1 billion at some point. Well, if you search it up, it says that it's Box Office Mojo has been kind of glit been glitchy lately.
SPEAKER_05Minions made like 16 billion in one day.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it did. Yeah, it was at 16 billion at one point. Um, but minions is kind of slowly tracking up, it's at 318 million. Uh but dude, your Moana movie, yeah, 115 million. I don't know about that one, Chief. Nothing doing. But um, and then my back to back right after that was Supergirl.
SPEAKER_01Supergirl. Um, I didn't really like this. It was supposed to be our last pick, but we wanted to add another sleeper, so I get we got two more, but uh, I was running out of options at this point. I picked Street Fighter.
SPEAKER_00Uh that looks visually appealing. I think it may make some money. Your fourth pick was uh Doom Girl.
SPEAKER_02This guy gave up so hard, he doesn't even know it's on list. I'm cooling in on the barber miner 2.0 give me Doom Part 3. I was gonna say you just expected the fourth. Yeah, Doom Part 3.
SPEAKER_01Uh give me the two-week revenues of Doomsday.
SPEAKER_05I want a no part in Doom Part 3.
SPEAKER_01No, it's gonna make me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it'll probably make a bet a billion together, I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_05Like and for my fourth pick, I selected Hunger Games. That's right. And I really have nothing really to say much about it. Probably gonna make like 250 in 2026, maybe their fan base is strong.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, plus it looks really good. It does kind of look interesting, I'm not gonna lie.
SPEAKER_05Plus, I'm excited for and like the movies I have I really like and are are looking forward to. I I I kind of like I kind of put that into my uh thought process. That's good. And then for my number five, I chose disclosure. By Steven Spielberg. I wasn't really expecting it to do like crazy numbers, but it's at like 240 right now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I'm happy with that. And um, have you seen that movie? Oh I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_00I used to see every movie.
SPEAKER_03Fred's busy, yeah. He's gonna be on the big string one day.
unknownI hope.
SPEAKER_01But um this I spoiled my next pick, uh, Street Fighter. I was running out of choices. Um visually, it looks really appealing. It's got uh uh a boy, Cody Rhodes, Roman.
SPEAKER_05Cody Rhodes!
SPEAKER_01Uh so I'm I'm excited to see that. But um, yeah, I know nothing about the game and every played it.
SPEAKER_03I'm just like wow, never played it a lot. Um, my back-to-back picks number five was uh Masters of the Universe came out.
SPEAKER_01I kind of enjoyed it and it wasn't it wasn't it wasn't that bad of the movie, it wasn't that bad.
SPEAKER_03And uh it was it was a fun movie. Um, never really grew up on it, but my dad talked about it here and there. And then number six, just for the memes, I went with Cat in the Hat. This man is absolutely scary of Cat and the Hat.
SPEAKER_05Cat in the Hat is the scariest character splash uh creature in a movie that I've ever seen.
SPEAKER_03Cat in the hat is hilarious. And you know what's funny? Ever since he said that, there's been a whole bunch of a whole lot of timeline of memes, and the files are getting pulled on that movie because he is creepy, but it is a food processing, and it comes out around Thanksgiving, so I was like, oh yeah, Thanksgiving kids are off on their break from school, and I hope that they like Cat in a hat in the last movie. Give me some money, man.
SPEAKER_01Um my last pick, uh doesn't even want to see it! Come back in the next month when this movie drops. Who got this? Coyote versus Acme. No one's scared. Let me give let me give you the ball now. You're not that guy. Anybody who knows anything about this movie, they filmed it, they finished it, it was ready to be released, and then Warner Brothers was like, Yeah, we're not confident in this. Fuck it, put in the vault. It's not gonna never gonna see the live day. Then you had all these independent filmmakers and people who are just obsessed with film create a uh uh what what is it like a like a petition to resurrect this movie? It took a year or a year and a half, they got thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of signatures.
SPEAKER_05All that for 50 million dollars. That movie is not breaking a hundred million.
SPEAKER_00It was acquired by a new company called Catch Up Entertainment.
SPEAKER_01This is gonna be their first movie. It's got a whole bunch of people back in this movie. This is gonna be something on on par with like the Iron Bun made a crap ton of money when it wasn't. Will you even watch this movie? Well, I won't probably not. I mean, come on, man.
SPEAKER_00So I don't really pay for the movie tickets.
SPEAKER_01Um so even if I were to go watch it, I wouldn't help my case anyway. But I am confident that anybody who knows ball about this movie is gonna go out and support it because we we wished it into existence and now we gotta we gotta watch it. So I'm not even gonna say Coyote versus Acme's gonna make some money.
SPEAKER_05And with the last pick uh of the 2026 movie draft, uh Lazy Critics Room, I selected Mortal Kombat 2. Solid movie, made like 129 million. I'm happy with that, with it being my uh my final pick. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and uh I liked it. Punishment is up for debate right now. We're still trying to figure it out, but if anybody has any ideas, we're open to it. Might as well accept it now, man.
SPEAKER_03Uh I just want to ask one more question before we sign off. Is there one movie you wish you chose? Oh, absolutely for another movie. Yeah, it could be released by now, or it could still be in the future that you just like totally forgot about.
SPEAKER_05I wish that I would have drafted Clayface and it hasn't even come out, but a bunch of people are talking about it. Looks really good. It's a rated R, like, kind of horror movie. That like has been really popular this year, especially. Plus, I'm really excited for that movie. So I I wish that I I would have took the balls and and drafted that movie. Probably over Mortal Kombat, but you know, I'm not really that that upset about it. But or the uh backrooms. How did the backrooms make more than disclosure day? Uh I'm pretty sure that's at like 350 million right now backrooms. 3707, I think. How did it make that much? I mean, it was really good.
SPEAKER_01I I wish I hopped on the obsession train. I wish I knew ball about it. Um, but besides that, after again, just watching the movie, I know the Odyssey's about to make hella money. Um I so I wish I hopped on. I had the opportunity, but I wasn't fully. You really did. I had a toy story too. No one could get hit and touch a billion again because Oppenheimer came out.
SPEAKER_05Has he had a billion movie?
SPEAKER_01Oppenheimer was pushing a billion. It was like 950.
SPEAKER_05977, I think.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but um, yeah, I didn't think with the he didn't have a bar. This is gonna be his first one. I wasn't fully confident that he was gonna hit that, but now I am after watching it. Yeah, so I regret that. But um, yeah, those two.
SPEAKER_03Um, whenever we were drafting, I was Robbie was saying his picks, and I was like, darn it, I was gonna get that next. And I'm saying the minions and Moana away from me. But um, yeah, I'm gonna hop on it.
SPEAKER_01Both of those?
SPEAKER_03I would have if he didn't take it. If he like took the Odyssey and uh Toy Story Story, I would have gone for those two. Wow, yeah, um, but he didn't take it, so bang. Um, that's good on my part. But I'm gonna hop on the obsession train. I really love that movie, and it's at number seven. Over the odyssey. Number seven um out of all the movies released this year on a 750k budget. And I would have picked that for probably like my fifth or sixth pick. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. That would have been solid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03All right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right. Yeah. Got a lot out for the first episode. Uh, we had a lot more planned for it. We wanted to get into like, you know, our film tastes and a whole bunch of like different lists, some hot takes, which we'll have pretty much every other episode. But um, yeah, oddly open today. I was like, you know what? Let's talk about that. Everybody's gonna be talking about it. Absolutely. Y'all got our fresh thoughts literally. This is the first time we talked about it. Yeah. So um, and uh we can cap it off there. Um thank y'all so much for watching. Uh, we're gonna try and do a new episode every other week and have them uploaded on Saturdays. Um and yeah, and we had a little bit of mic issues tonight, but we're gonna get that fixed pretty soon too. So um, but thank you so much for your time and uh we hope to see y'all on the next one.
