Podcast Episode: The Comparison Trap –  Compare No More

Ever find yourself asking, “Why can’t our relationship be more like theirs?”
Whether it’s someone’s picture-perfect vacation, the way a friend’s spouse seems so thoughtful, or another couple’s “flawless” communication — comparison can quietly creep into our hearts and wreak havoc on our relationships.

In this episode, we're getting real about the comparison trap — how it shows up in marriage, why it’s so dangerous, and how to break free by grounding our identity in Christ, not in curated snapshots of other people’s lives.

“We are not called to keep up with the Joneses — we are called to be like Jesus.”
Tune in and let’s break the comparison cycle, build deeper trust, and become the couple God created us to be.

Couples Activity: Building Honest Connection

Want to fight comparison? Get close to real couples. Here’s how:
1. Spend time with couples you respect and talk about real issues.
2. You’ll find they face similar challenges — and that honesty leads to mutual growth.
3. Unhealthy comparisons come from distance, but openness fosters truth.
4. Know your identity — individually and as a couple.
5. Have a mentor couple you trust. Ask questions, share struggles, grow together.

Segment 6: A Marriage Audit

Here’s a great exercise to grow together: Do a marriage audit.
Ask each other:
• How are we doing with fun and leisure?
• Finances?
• Intimacy?
• Parenting?
• Spiritual growth?

SPEAKER_00

Hey friends, welcome back to Anchored in Grace. I'm Charis.

SPEAKER_02

And I am Eric, and we're so glad you're with us today. If you're new here, this podcast is all about helping couples stay rooted in God's truth and walk walking together in grace. Especially when life gets messy. And we know life can get messy, right, Charis?

SPEAKER_00

That is the truth. And speaking of messy, today's topic is the one that hits close to home for all of us and all of us couples, right? We're talking about comparison traps and how it sneaks into our marriages, distorts our perspectives, and stills our joy.

SPEAKER_02

Amen, amen. Before we get into it, let's open with a word of prayer. Heavenly Father, we thank you for this time together tonight. We invite you and in your presence into this conversation. Speak through us today and minister to every heart listening. Help us to see ourselves and our marriage through your eyes, Lord. Not through the lens of comparison. Give us peace where the where there's pressure. Contentment where there's striving. And truth where there's distortion. In Jesus' name, Amen.

SPEAKER_00

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

All right, so let's dig into this today. So our first part we're gonna talk about is what is a comparison trap, right? So comparison it shows up in so many areas. How we look, where we work, what we drive, and even who we married.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. Which is so interesting, right? It's it's it's really interesting because I think so many couples go through this, like you said, comparison things when they first get married. You start hearing these things and your friends, you're on social media, and people are doing so many things, and you always want to compare yourself and your marriage to what everybody else is doing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, and you know, that's the culture. You know, culture sets these expectations. Um, and it's easy to measure ourselves and our marriage against what we think other people uh what what we think other other people have, you know, and it's always perception, what we think other people have.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_02

You know, but those comparisons are based on idealized perceptions, not reality. And you had a great example one time of a social media thing during the pandemic that always stuck with me. It was a it was a lady that you had told me about that during the pandemic it looked like she was just doing all this traveling and all this different stuff. You want to speak on that?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, sure. Yeah. So she was a big influencer and you know, she was just always posting stuff, always look you know, she was going here, she was going there, and you know, if you look at it every single day, you're like, man, that that lady she be traveling. Mm-hmm. And you think about if you're on social media, you know, of any anyway, you know, Instagram, YouTube, um, Facebook, whatever, um, you know, you're looking at it as I wanna travel. You do know, right? And so I remember doing that myself, you know, and making you feel bad because and you hadn't even looked at it, you know, and I'm scrolling on Facebook and I'm like, man, she's like always on business trips when she's looks like she's in Hawaii, now she's in Bora Bora, now she's in the Philippines, or now she's in wherever she was, you know what I mean, Europe or Africa. I mean, she was just traveling the world, and I'm like, dang, I need to be an influencer, right? Or I need to do something, I need to set my game up. What am I doing? Um, but then like I think it was like four months later or something like that, she broke down her life and her influen her influencer life, um, talking about how she would take a paper cup and point it towards the sky. And it looked like she was sitting in a um uh airplane and she was sitting in her apartment from the balcony and she wasn't even on an airplane, but everybody else's perspective was she was traveling. Oh my gosh, I want to do what she's doing. But if we knew in advance, four months later, that she was just really sitting on her balcony in her apartment, but what do we always say? I want to do what they're doing.

SPEAKER_02

I wanna do what they're doing.

SPEAKER_00

You know, so you know, God really taught me a lesson in that. Don't always want what somebody else is doing, be satisfied in what you what you have.

SPEAKER_02

Amen. And content. Yeah, you know, yeah, because I remember the conversations we had during that time. It was already hard because we were kind of isolated, right? Yeah, right. And we were like just thinking about our life making statements to one another, like we don't travel enough, we don't do enough.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_02

And I want you to think about the pressures you can put on your spouse, on yourself, saying we don't do enough because of what we think other people do are doing. You know, and that's really a a terrible thing, you know what I mean? Oh, yeah. To desire so bad what somebody has, but you don't know even if they really were doing that, yeah. What did they go through to be able to do that or what happened in their life for them to be able to do what they're doing? Right. You know?

SPEAKER_00

And you're and you're also putting unrealistic pressure on yourself. Yes. And which makes no sense, right? You don't like you said, you don't know what that person went through to get to where they are. Yeah. And our pastor says that all the time. Yeah. You don't do you really want what I went through to get what I have to what I have to be where I am today. That's right. I laugh because I'm like, yeah, some people are like, Oh, you're blessed, or you have favor, oh you're a marriage, oh my gosh, blah, blah, blah. But hey, honey, let me tell you, it takes work. It takes work every single day. It takes prayer every day, right? That's right. So, yeah, we could talk about this all day, but let's let's keep going.

SPEAKER_01

That's right, that's right.

SPEAKER_00

So, but on that, you know, the real danger, Eric, is comparison stifles progress. So the only way we grow is through truth. And that's what I was basically telling you guys, you know, through that story is that's the truth, you know. So don't don't be so caught up in the social media influencers. I mean, some of them are doing what they're doing, but some of them can get you caught up, you know. But let your real influence come from God. Um, and so the truth has to be filtered through the light of the gospel.

SPEAKER_02

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

You know.

SPEAKER_02

And that's big. Truth has to be filtered through the light. Even that truth that we thought we saw had to be filtered. Yeah. Because it wasn't real.

SPEAKER_00

It wasn't real.

SPEAKER_02

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That is so deep. So um we're going on in here now to segment two. Um yes, we're going to segment two. Um three of the most common marriage comparisons that we're gonna speak on here. So, um the first one I'm gonna touch on is comparing your spouse to someone else. And I think that one right there is one of the worst ones you can do. You know, you might think, you know, why is it my husband or wife thoughtful like him or her? Yeah. You know, or I wish my wife or husband was skinnier like so and so.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, to think on the to to to think of your spouse and to to to to say they're not good enough the way they are, right? Based off of desiring something someone else is ha something someone else has, to me is that's a sin. It's sinful. You know, uh, it's not appreciating the blessing that God has given you because when we uh agreed to get married and went into our marriage, our covenant, we said for better or worse, through thick or thin, no matter what. You know what I'm saying? So, you know, it's just one of those things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. That's good.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

You know, we've seen this wreck so many relationships, you know, it sets unrealistic expectations and it breeds resentment. You know, which is huge. Um, and your spouse isn't supposed to be someone else. They're uniquely who God made them to be. Just for you. You know, God designed them for you. That's who they are. The only way they can improve is if you guys do it together. Amen. You know, and I think that's something you and I do constantly. You know, we know we're we're not right somewhere, we look at each other as a reflection, you know, and say, Hey, let's do this together. Let's meal prep together, let's work out together, let's whatever we're doing, you know, let's read our word together, whatever it is spiritually, mentally, physically, we're doing it together. Amen. So we both become better, not just one.

SPEAKER_02

And that is something that we've learned over twenty seven years of of marriage.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It ain't always been like that, right?

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

We had to grow into this.

SPEAKER_00

We definitely had to grow into that.

SPEAKER_02

It it you know, those comparisons were in our marriage early. And we had to learn and walk through those things and and and really go through those challenges of those comparisons. The pain, yeah, and and and the realness and pressure of those things, you know. But I thank God for his grace that we are able to walk through those things and learn from those difficult situations. Yes, you know. Um, the next one, comparing your happiness and or conflicts. Um, so you know, people all have often said Shari and I, man, you guys never argue. You know. You know, I never I never see you guys argue.

SPEAKER_01

Right, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know there and you guys are always doing something fun, you know. Our routine seems boring, you know what I'm saying? And you know, reality, it's about what you put into it, what you're willing to put into it. Right. Shards and I will sit around sometimes and and and and Shars often brings up, you know what? Babe, I'm a Gemini. Change. I like to do different things. Right. You know, me being an Aquarius, I'm a person and a creature of habit. I can eat the same thing every day. Shars likes different things. So sometimes we have to make sure in our relationship that we are changing things up during the week, doing different things, you know, to deal with our personalities. A lot of people in in the church don't want to talk about these zodiac things because they'd be like, oh no, that ain't of God. But one thing I will tell you is there's some truth to these things, and it's important to understand how they affect you, right? And then you put scripture to it and say, How can I use it? You know what I mean? So I use it, we use it like this. We say, you know what, how do we understand in our personalities? Right. How can we do better in our marriage, better understanding ourselves?

SPEAKER_00

Each other, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00

Yep. So, you know, but we forget everyone has issues, you know, everyone has issues. Some couples are just better at hiding them. Yeah. You know, every healthy marriage has had tough conversations, yeah, dry seasons, and growth pains. Just like us. That's right. You know, we've definitely had them. So there's, you know. It it's real. You know, comparison traps are a hundred percent real and that's definitely why we are talking about it today. Because it's a everyday, ongoing thing that every couple deals with, you know, and even not just in couples, but even in our kids. So you know, make sure that you know, our kids aren't going through this or we aren't comparing our kids, you know what I mean, to other kids or their accomplishments or um other things like that. Like, oh, did you see this this kid down the street, man? You know, oh my gosh, I just talked to her mom and they got student of the month. When are you gonna get student of the month? You know, make sure we're not doing those things because that can break down a a child's confidence, yeah, their strength, and just as it does in in a relationship, you know, if you say you look fat or when are you gonna dress up ever? You know, that's gonna make you that's gonna kill your confidence. So you know what I mean. So work on these things together as a couple.

SPEAKER_02

And you and you really have to because being totally transparent with you, Shara and I have gone through our really difficult moments where w at times we didn't know if we were gonna make it.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

You know?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And we really the only thing that helped us was Christ. You know what I'm saying? It wasn't running to our parents, you know. I'm saying one thing we've learned at a young age is not to run and tell everybody our business. That's true. We don't put our business on social media. No, we don't get out there, we learn to pray. We learn to take things to God and deal with them things. We learn to continue to come back to one another and work because it what it is, it's work.

SPEAKER_01

It is work.

SPEAKER_02

You and your partner have to be willing to work together. It's like a project, a really hard project that you have to figure out. That puzzle that you're putting together with a thousand pieces, and you're like, Man, I can't find this piece, but you gotta keep working and working together until you get it done.

SPEAKER_01

That's right.

SPEAKER_02

And I believe our marriage is just a masterpiece that is always at work, and we're and we're working at it, and it's something that God blessed us with. So it's something because I know God blessed me with this beautiful woman. He spoke into my heart when I first saw her. So it's something I don't take for granted, I don't take her for granted. Yes, and I learn every day that we're all fallible, and I love her so much, and I have to keep digging every day at myself because I know I need to do the work every day. I can't worry about what she's doing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I have to worry that what am I doing? Self-reflection and self-reflection and doing the work. That's what we have to focus on. Self. You know?

SPEAKER_00

That's right. I love it. Me too.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Um, so the next one we're looking at is comparing your accomplishments. You know, if you've heard it, you know, they have a better house, a nicer car. Why can't I get ahead like them? You know, you hear that every day. But you have no idea what it took for them to get there. You know, and you know, it's it's very real, you know what I'm saying? That, you know, when we go through situations, you know, and we're thinking about our accomplishments and we're looking out there at everybody else's stuff, that sometimes is is really hard, you know, to see other people getting ahead, getting new houses, getting new cars. Right. And you feel like you're stuck sometimes. You know what I mean? And often we felt that way, you know.

SPEAKER_01

That's right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

God put us in a situation with our home where we were kind of stuck for a while. And when we got free, we ended up just staying because it was a better deal for us. Yeah. And it ended up being a blessing. You know what I'm saying? A blessing. When everybody else is paying these crazy prices, we were blessed. You know what I'm saying? Because God just showed out for us. You know what I mean? So, you know, understand that God's situations, sometimes things that just don't seem like that. It's just not working for me. It's not, I'm not getting what other people are getting. God does things sometime in your life that doesn't make sense. Right. But just walk with it. Yeah. You know, let him lead you.

SPEAKER_00

Amen. I love it. So in I'm gonna come from 2 Corinthians 10 and 12 from the NIV version, and it says this We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with someone or some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So Second Corinthians ten and twelve.

SPEAKER_02

Amen. That's a beautiful scripture.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

You know, and I think that scripture is just saying that when you choose to do that, yeah, you're not walking in wisdom. When you're when when you're not com when you choose to go and compare yourselves to others, you're not using wisdom. No, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I think it speaks for itself.

SPEAKER_02

It really does. Yeah. Yeah. We d and and we don't know what people have gone through. You know, um, that new house, um um, it might been an inheritance. Um, that vacation. It could be a work perk, you know. You don't know their story and their path isn't your calling. You know what I'm saying? We mentioned that earlier, you know, their path isn't your calling. You have to understand where people have walked through. You have to sometimes think, have I walked in their shoes?

SPEAKER_00

That's right.

SPEAKER_02

You know?

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Awesome. No, that's great. So we're gonna move on to segment three. Compare, no more. So here's the truth. No one is perfect, right? Every couple have struggles, even the happy ones. Just because someone doesn't post their arguments doesn't mean they don't have them.

SPEAKER_02

That's the truth.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think somebody's gonna pop up and be like, Hey, you know what just happened? Me and Eric, oh my gosh. We just had this argument and let me tell you who wants to say who's right or wrong in this.

SPEAKER_01

That's right.

SPEAKER_00

Right? Nobody's gonna do that. But like I said, the biggest thing like what Eric and I do is we pray about it.

SPEAKER_02

Amen. Amen.

SPEAKER_00

We might be upset with each other, but the best the best resolution is is prayer.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. So strength isn't found in perfection, it's found in facing these imperfections together. The more you're willing to work together, the m the the more um things will come clearer to you and the more common ground you will find through your difficulties together.

SPEAKER_00

That's good.

SPEAKER_02

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

All right, so we got some couples activity um for you guys. So you might want to write these down. So building honest connections, okay? So if you want to fight comp um comparison, get close to real couples. And this is how you do it. So number one, spend time with couples you respect. and talk about real issues.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Number two, you'll find the face um you'll find they face similar challenges and that honestly leads to mutual growth. Right? In your relationship. Number three, unhealthy comparisons come from distance but openness fosters truth. Number four, know your identity.

unknown

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_00

Individually and as a couple. That's very important, you guys. And number five, have a mentor couple you trust. Ask questions, share your struggles, and that and you'll grow together as a couple.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I really like that.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

And you know, I really wanted to this kind of focus in on number three here. Uh-huh. Unhealthy comparisons come from distance, but openness openness fosters truth. And I believe that, you know, when you do have people you trust that you do talk to.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Being real and open and honest with them is important. Especially to when you have a couple um that is a good role model who's spiritually connected that you know um know how to work together and and overcome things.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You want to have a couple like that that you can lean on, talk to and get good advice from. Right. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Never be scared to do that. Right. You know? And these will be posted um on the bottom of the podcast for people to see.

SPEAKER_00

So you can have it.

SPEAKER_02

So you can have it, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So um segment four the come the one comparison worth making.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

Right? The only one comparison that scripture encourages and that and that and that's looking to Christ.

SPEAKER_00

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

You know? Being like Christ.

SPEAKER_00

That's right.

SPEAKER_02

You know?

SPEAKER_00

And the scripture we have for that is in Jeremiah 9 23 through 24 in the NIV and that says this is what the Lord says let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches but let the one who boast boast about this that they have the understanding to know me that I am the Lord who exercises kindness justice and righteousness on earth for in these I delight declares the Lord Amen to that one. Yep. And that was uh Jeremiah Jeremiah 9 23 through 24.

SPEAKER_02

Amen. You know we're not called to measure our worth by riches, beauty or power but how deeply we know and walk with the Lord. Amen that is the key. How well do we know God? You know how honest are we with God? Yeah. And with one another.

SPEAKER_00

That's good. And then I got another scripture for us in Romans 3 and 27 in the NIV it says where then is boasting it is excluded because of what law the law that requires works no because of the law that requires faith.

SPEAKER_02

Amen and I think it was Paul that said if you boast of anything you boast in the Lord. You know Amen. 2 Corinthians 5 and 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

SPEAKER_01

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

God cleansed our sin. God is the the Lamb that's right Christ is the Lamb that came to cleanse our sin.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. You know that's good. So that's where our identity comes from not from what we own or how we perform but from Christ righteousness.

SPEAKER_02

The righteousness of God yes love that so we move into the next segment here highlight reels versus real life we have to stop letting someone's social media hotlight highlights reels define our life goals and our our our our real life goals you know um and I think that's important and I really want you to to really think about that because we have real life goals but we really can focus in on what others are doing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah and I remember um watching this pastor um his name is Steven Fertnick and he's from Elevation Church um in his quote he said the reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else's highlight reel. And you know that really hit home because I it reminded me of that what we were talking about earlier, you know, and how I was kind of stuck thinking of that lady's traveling and her lifestyle and oh man she has this she has that but we was insecure. Because we don't have that. I didn't have that I was struggling with my insecure my own insecurity. Yeah. You know and I had to go to God with that you know so Yeah. I thank God I'm free from that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah it it I was like wow you know I was like oh my goodness you know so really we really need to think about that. So I'm gonna read that quote one more time. It says the reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind the scenes with everyone else's highlight reel.

SPEAKER_02

Man, that rings.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah that rings yeah you know everyone else's highlight reels think about Facebook yeah we think about Facebook the little top little thing up there if you want a visual in your mind you only see the good stuff. Yeah people aren't gonna post anything bad we're yelling at each other we upset oh I just lost my job blah blah blah you know help my whatever it is right but we need to be prayer for for one of one of each all of us you know when we see those highlight reels we need to be praying for those people. Amen. Each and every one of them you know because I sometimes look at it as a sense of of sometimes it is insecurities right sometimes it can be a call for help of Lord help me. I want somebody to see me but nobody sees me but this is where I get my likes and this is where I get my connection but the real connection should come from Christ.

SPEAKER_02

Amen and be strong enough to understand that social media is not evil right it's it's a tool a good tool to stay connected to family that you're far away from right um and to to see positive good things that's going on in their life but live in reality in your mind and know all the highlight reels that you see posting is not a real reflection of everything that's going on in their life.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know you're only seeing a small snippet of things. Yeah you know so just know that you know know that in your heart and don't let that make you insecure you know be secure in God.

SPEAKER_00

Let God build your confidence you know right and definitely celebrate your celebrate your your celebrations your wins you know all that we're not saying don't do that but yeah just be prayerful be prayerful when you see those pop up just say Lord bless them. Bless them continue to keep blessing them. Don't let's not us be a sacrifice in our sec insecurities. That's right and when you we can help hold ourselves up hostage that's right in those insecurities.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. You know and when you see them doing well you just say Lord I thank you for their blessing and then go Lord I know mine's coming too when the time is right hey you can do it for me.

SPEAKER_00

I know it's coming that's right.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. Bless them you know congratulate them pray for them you know that God continues to elevate them never feel any other way so I thank God for that we chase what we don't need cars homes vacations based on people sometimes we don't really know and that can be dangerous ground. So let's just be focused right that's right.

SPEAKER_00

Amen so we're going into this marriage audit now yes okay so marriage audit okay so here's another great exercise to grow together. So do a marriage audit you know and this these are certain things me and Eric do often um ask each other these questions and we'll put these below as well um how are we doing with our fun and our leisure our finances our intimacy our parenting spiritual growth and our health. And you can mix it up you know how it fits your lifestyle too but um those are just a few you know that we added into the activity.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. Mm-hmm and don't get overwhelmed by it you know you can start with picking one area to invest in at a time and take small intentional steps and continue to grow in this activity and and and and the goal is being transparent and honest with one another. Amen truthful don't lie to each other be honest.

SPEAKER_00

Yep be honest so segment seven grow by giving this one can be hard for some people right so one of the best ways we've grown in our marriage is by partnering our strength to serving others kind of like even doing this podcast. Amen you know helping others when needed amen and you know doing premarital coaching for us has been a blessing.

SPEAKER_02

You know we get to connect with other huples and it has helped us as much as it helps them. You know it's important because people have poured into us to pour into others you know and that's right you know we want to keep pouring into people and keep blessing you know this is something God has put on our heart.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And finally water your own grass every single day no alternating days no skipping seasons water your grass every day you guys that is the truth because grass isn't greener on the other side it's greener where you water it.

SPEAKER_01

That's right.

SPEAKER_02

And I want you to hear that the more you put into what you do that's right the better it's going to be the more love you put into your marriage the more blessed it's gonna be the more romance you put into your marriage the more romantic it's going to be speak on it. So it's about what you're willing to pour that's right into your marriage. Amen I love it I love it no no turf over here right no turf don't worry about what other people doing worry about what you're supposed to do. And I say that to the men men you lead in your household you lead you pour into your life you be an example to your sons you be an example to your daughters you show them young baby girls how to be loved you show your sons how to be leaders and how to love their wives and you show your wife every day how much you appreciate and how much you love her. It's so important to be done every day.
