In “Krusty Gets Busted,” Homer witnesses Springfield’s favorite clown robbing the Kwik-E-Mart, sending Krusty from children’s television royalty to public enemy number one. Andrew and Thom discuss Bart’s unwavering faith in his hero, the debut of Sideshow Bob, and the episode’s darker look at celebrity, media frenzy, and how quickly a town will turn on yesterday’s beloved entertainer. Along the way, they revisit clown police lineups, triple-chocolate ice cream, Kent Brockman’s breathless reporting, Krusty’s deeply questionable endorsements, and Sideshow Bob’s attempt to replace lowbrow comedy with educational television. Bart and Lisa ultimately crack the case, proving that sometimes the child who refuses to accept the obvious is the only one paying attention.

SPEAKER_03

Grab a donut and have a seat on the couch. Welcome to Donuts on the Couch, growing up on Evergreen Terrace, in another Simpsons Rewatch Podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Andrew, we're back. Yes, we are back again for another episode of Donuts on the Couch Growing Up on Evergreen Terrace.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, absolutely. Season one, episode 12, both for the Simpsons and for us. Yes, that's true.

SPEAKER_01

Funny how that always lines up. It seems to be keeping pace. Yes. That's what we're trying to do. Let's see how consistent we can be over that uh next uh 40 years as we do this.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, for the rest of our lives.

SPEAKER_01

Um all right. So this episode uh is a home run in my eyes. Uh which episode are we on, by the way?

SPEAKER_00

We are on season one, episode 12, as we just said. Uh Krusty gets busted. Krusty gets busted. Which, yes. I looking back, I don't remember this as being such a huge episode, but now, I mean, this kicks off the entire Bart, Sideshow Bob, Krusty, all of it for the next, I don't know, the rest of our lives.

SPEAKER_01

It really grows the world so dramatically, yeah. I mean, I at the time I don't think we would have appreciated how big of a character Sciacho Bob would become, um, how important to the show he is. Uh really.

SPEAKER_00

And it's Kelsey Grammar doing the voice. I know we don't talk a lot about the voice actors and everything. And nowadays you see a lot more voice actors just being themselves, but this is a character that Kelsey Grammer does. It's brilliant. The voice is perfect for the character.

SPEAKER_01

Um the timing also, this is still midstream, and cheers. Cheers was still probably the most popular show on TV at this time.

SPEAKER_00

And is this is this pre-Frasier?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, this week. Well, he was playing Fraser on Cheers. So right, right, right. Yes. But before the Frazier show, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so Frasier, I love Frasier. I don't know if you uh have watched it. Uh I watched the whole thing. I watched the new one. Like when he comes back to Boston, yeah. Yes, he comes back to Boston and lives with his son that he has that he doesn't really know, and his son's a fireman and kind of a regular dude. I watched most of it on an airplane one time. Excellent. Yeah, I don't know. I I just love I love Frazier, I love uh Kelsey Grammar, he's just one of the one of the greats.

SPEAKER_01

If you have in time, you gotta watch Cheers. You gotta go back. Uh it was the kind of show that like I was aware of as a kid because like my parents would watch it, and I wasn't never allowed to watch it. You know, the humor was too too adult, but like I was aware it was a thing, and like even recognizing that like they would make time to watch it, and like uh so I knew it was a big deal, but so I didn't know who Kelsey Grammar was at the time, obviously when Krusty got busted, but yeah, I've gotta I've gotta go back and check it out.

SPEAKER_00

I've seen a few episodes and I've seen clips, obviously. Um, but yeah, yeah, that is certainly a show that's on my list of time to go back and watch.

SPEAKER_01

Your infinite list of every show somebody names to you. Yes, exactly. Write it down with no intention of ever watching it.

SPEAKER_00

Well, it's uh it's I mean, and it's Boston, you know, it's it is a show that I would like to go and see.

SPEAKER_01

So maybe we'll do that at some point. There's Red Sox involved. Yeah. Hey, we like the Red Sox. That's right. That's right. Sometimes. Uh anyway, so we're getting into the episode. Um, let's see. Oh, the chalk gag. Uh it's a little bit um uh it's clever. I mean, the it comes up as they are laughing at me, not with me.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, that and that I like that because it kind of gives um a little teaser to the episode. It's it almost feels like it's Sideshow Bob writing that, not Bart. Um I I I did I did like that. And it's a little bit more than the typical uh hijinks of a hijinx of like, oh, what did Bart get in trouble for today? And they're moving to actually just making it be whatever they want, which is which is great. Right. I I like so gives them some freedom, yes. Yes, exactly. Um the couch gag, not so much, same old, same old.

SPEAKER_01

A repeat again. So the repeat from uh moaning Lisa Maggie's gets squashed into the air and then caught on Marge's lap. And yeah, yeah, too big there. Okay. But you know, the opening, sort of a nice uh cold opening here with um showing Krusty's face, but then it revealed that it's a screen that Krusty drives through, uh driving through his own face. Kids are cheering, he said, and and you know, I think this is such an important setup here with the hey kids, who do you love? Yeah, how much do you love me? With all of our hearts with all of our hearts, yeah. What would you do if I went off the air? We kill ourselves.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, what what what are we doing? What what sort of cult TV show is this that the that the parents of Springfield are allowing their children to watch? And you see it a little bit later. Marge comes in and is like, what is changing? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um which is kind of the reaction um, you know, my parents and uh my friends' parents felt about me watching The Simpsons, which is kind of funny.

SPEAKER_01

Uh I think so. I think this episode was one of the ones that probably uh you know had my parents turn it off uh at a young age.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, for sure. Um, but yeah, just oh god, I I would I would be so uncomfortable if my son was watching a show when he was like screaming at the TV, if this show gets canceled, I'll kill myself.

SPEAKER_01

But I I love that. I mean, clearly it shows you there's there's a certain darkness to Krusty in this whole world and this empire that he has, uh, how much control he has over the kids.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and it sets up his um later in his episode. Obviously, it's Krusty gets busted, so it it sets it up to where we believe it. Yeah, he should get busted, you know.

SPEAKER_01

There's something bad about this character. We meet Sychobob here, uh, initially just through the slide whistle. He's not talking, yeah. Right, right. Um, it's a little girl's birthday on the show, and basically Krusty leaves it to the crowd. Do we, you know, what do we do, like blow out candles or shoot somebody out of a canon, basically, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, that's just the there's no choice there, of course. Yeah, the canon. The canon. I was screaming it like I was immediately roped into the Krusty show. I wanted to see the canon as well.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. So as the scene is going on, uh, it's still going through the credits. And what I didn't realize is this episode is directed by uh Brad Bird, um, who directed The Incredibles, The Incredibles 2, Ratatouille, um Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. So he's this Oscar-winning um uh Oscar winner, uh Iron Giant. Uh great stuff. Exactly, a lot of great stuff. The other thing he directed was the Do the Bartman video.

SPEAKER_00

Um you told me to watch this, and I hadn't seen this in a long time. When did this come out like uh in a long line?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so the actual Do the Bartman video comes out in season two. I think it's at they aired it after episode eight. Uh so we'll talk more about it then. Um, but but I thought it was relevant just because of the tie-in there with the same director. Uh, I think he directed one other episode. I can't remember off the top of my head which one I was, but um, but you know, it I think it's really uh impressive, you know, uh a sort of director of this caliber uh directing this episode, and it probably speaks to the strength of it. Um there's a few there's a few allusions uh um throughout the the story to um the A113, which is uh uh referenced in most of the Pixar movies because that was like a certain uh classroom at one of the California institutions where a lot of the animators trained at.

SPEAKER_00

Um we see that on we yeah, we see that later in this episode on Krusty's uh jumpsuit.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, exactly, exactly. So um anyway, so so yeah, it that that caught my eye, and that was going on as this part's going on. Uh this uh Bob's getting launched from the cannon. Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00

He gets sling it, he like flops out of that cannon very powerfully.

SPEAKER_01

He's just like sling fabric.

SPEAKER_00

Very very funny.

SPEAKER_01

The physical comedy of Sideshow Bob, right? Uh is amazing. Oh, he's a genius. He's he's hilarious. We get we give him credit, but you know, clearly it was the animators. Uh so so they add extra gunpowder to the cannon because they hadn't had good luck with it before.

SPEAKER_00

We need more gunpowder. It's a big big thing.

SPEAKER_01

They they let the little girl light the fuse and then it it shoots back, he falls out. And then Krusty comes up with his his punchline here of uh don't blame me, I didn't do it. And all the kids sort of say that along with him, which becomes uh Bart's catchphrase later on, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And and I he has another catchphrase in this episode, too. He says I corumba at one point. Um I don't know how many. Yeah, was that the first time? I don't I think it might have been. Um I don't really remember him saying I Carumba so far yet this season. But yeah, that's true.

SPEAKER_01

And it's like uh it was culturally relevant because they were talking about the trip to Mexico, right? Yes, the trip to the Yucatan. Yes. So as this scene goes on, um there's the line, you know, Bart and uh Lisa are watching and they're laughing, and Bart gives the line, Comedy, Thy Name is Krusty. Which uh I I from what I've picked up watching this season, this is the first reference to Shakespeare uh from Hamlet with frailty, thy name is woman. And this is used in all sorts of different you know, pop culture, um, whatever thy name is, whatever. Um but I but I I thought that was pretty funny. It it took me a second to recognize what that was from.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Thy Name is Andrew. Yes, this is perfect.

SPEAKER_01

I I enjoyed reading Hamlet uh in high school. That was probably like the one book in high school I actually enjoyed reading. Uh like the line by line dissection of it. I I just found it to be really interesting.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I don't know. I don't remember uh liking a book in high school. Yeah, yeah. You know, um that's okay. Maybe Romeo and Juliet. I didn't I didn't mind that one. I think I had a good teacher for that one too. But I think with any of those books, if you have a good teacher, it certainly helps. That goes such a long way, doesn't it?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um so then as you were saying before, we we get into the first itchy and scratchy cartoon here, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, and the the great opening where they're just hammering down each other with you know those mallets or whatever, swords and all these things. Yeah, and it's really and it's they've moved, you know, because they were watching the happy little elves for so long. And now they're and and there is this transition with um, you know, in watching television with kids where they move away from certain things and into more um you know, more adult-ish shows. My son doesn't never really watch a lot of cartoon cartoons. He likes he likes like family comedies and um things with real actors instead of cartoons, which is kind of an interesting thing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, my kids are doing a little bit of that transition, like still within uh Disney. Um, so we've gone from a lot of the cartoons, then we got into a little bit of like the maybe like middle school cartoons, um, but they're still six and eight. And now they're transitioned into like the um the live action musicals and uh yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, my yeah, my son did that too, like zombies and also. Zombies is big in our house right now. I'm sure, I'm sure. Uh yeah, my son now just w loves to watch Malcolm in the Middle and uh the Goldbergs and stuff like that. Any any show where there's like siblings and kids and kind of the main showrunners uh he loves.

SPEAKER_01

We um did you watch the reboot of Malcolm in the Middle yet? We did, yeah. We thought it was fun. Four episodes, easy to digest. Um I I'm still so blown away by Brian Cranston as an actor. Um you know, watching watching him, especially in the reboot where he sort of does play like two different versions of himself, like even just the way he like holds his posture. It's it's amazing. He's two different characters.

SPEAKER_00

He's he's he's just he's one of the greats. Um I need to go back and watch. So obviously, I I I watch Breaking Bad, I watch Better Call Saul, all that stuff. I remember when Breaking Bad came out, uh, opening night. I think it was the same night as Mad Men. I watched both of those like week to week, you know, no DVDs or no streaming services. Um But there's he has another show that I need to watch um where he's a judge. Um I forget the name of that one. U Yeah, I think it's called Your Honor. Yeah. And I think it was only two seasons, but I've heard that that's fantastic. And I knew that's that's on the that's on the list. That's on that log list. Yeah. It's right next to Cheers.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh we'll get to it. But again, shout out to Brian Cranston. So phenomenal actor. The the um the episode title of Itchy Didn't Scratchy was Burning Love, which is a reference to the 1972 song by Arthur Alexander that was covered later that year by Elvis Presley, uh, which is sort of the version that took off. Uh also on the Lilo and Stitch soundtrack. Um, yes, of course. Uh also on the list. Uh but uh this is where March comes in and is like sort of struck by the violence, is like, oh my. Yeah, what are we watching here? What is this? And you know, that's crusty. Did you catch uh Lisa's response here? No, what did she say? Uh if cartoons were meant for adults, they would put them on primetime. So I think this is like probably the first time they break that fourth wall there.

SPEAKER_00

And so you know, because this was I mean, it was yes, we watched as kids, but you know, I'm sure I'm sure 30-year-olds that tuned in to Fox on Thursday night in 1990 were like, this show's sweet. Yes, we have whole we have whole channels now, Adult Swim and Comedy Central.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's true. I mean, yeah, I it I didn't know people still had channels. I thought everything streamed now.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I think there are still channels. Oh, I think. I don't know. We'll have somebody look into it.

SPEAKER_01

Our research team are channels still. Do we have interns here yet? Can we um well I I can look into getting one. We'll see.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe my son, he'll do it. Get off that iPad and look this up for me. Do they still have TV channels?

SPEAKER_01

Oh no. Um the transition is uh into uh Homer's at work. He gets a call from Marge, uh, hoping he'd pick up a half gallon of premium ice cream. Oh wow.

SPEAKER_02

Premium?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that catches his ear, but then he also recognizes wait, why am I getting premium?

SPEAKER_00

Um I I love the this idea because I don't even think of ice cream as being premium or non-premium. It's just ice cream, isn't it? You know, there are certainly higher end brands, but I don't think of it as being premium or non-premium.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I would say uh my perspective on that has changed since moving to Wisconsin. Um, you know, oh you're in like the dairy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

What's what's your what's your brand? What's the go-to? Oh, I don't know. Um ice cream. Tom, it's called donuts on the couch, not ice cream on the couch.

SPEAKER_01

That's our other podcast you can find it. Yeah, that's where we just taste ice cream. We'll have to uh maybe get that one in development. Uh no, I don't think I don't have a regular ice cream. I I'm not a really huge ice cream eater. Um, we got some local shops around here uh that that we like to get it from. Uh so they're not really national brands.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we have a couple locals up here in Maine that I go, but I am uh I always have been um since growing up in Massachusetts. I'm a Brigham's loyalist. Yeah, it's a Massachusetts thing. It's you know, Northeast. I'm sure it's other places, they're a pretty big company. But I think I think they got around, right? I mean, with my grandmother would take me to get burgers and sh shakes at at Brigham's, like the restaurant. So yeah, I would I'm uh pretty much a loyalist, and I'm making my son be a loyalist as well. So forcing it on him. Yeah, as much as as hard as it is to force chocolate ice cream down.

SPEAKER_01

Children hate it. Um so Homer's uh let's see. Um Patty and someone. Yes, the Yucatan trip. They they come in, um, they brought over their slides, eight carousels of pictures from their trip to the Yucatan.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, when was the last time you watched slides like this in this manner?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I mean, I've I've sort of sat through like people like putting up their pictures on on the big screen or something off of their phone. But um, or I guess the the modern equivalent is like when people post 146 pictures from their trip on Facebook and then like I'll I'll just like the screenshot of all of them and like not actually go through them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. I um so my dad has these carousels flies um yes for when he was in Vietnam. Um so I mean I've seen those, but not recently, you know. Yeah. Um we'll go through them again at some point, but um, but yeah, I thought you know, I think it's it's a kind of a fun old old timey look look at photography that you don't see very often.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's changed, right? How we take stuff like that in. Um the transition then is Homer's at the quickie uh quickie mart, right? Yeah, this I have this noted down as just the robbery because I have it so fresh in my memory. He's greeted by a poo as the steady customer. Like hello, steady customer, right? I'm probably the steady customer at the gas station down the street from my house.

SPEAKER_00

So I don't know. I don't know if that's good or bad, but yeah.

SPEAKER_01

No, they they probably know your name by now, right?

SPEAKER_00

Um uh probably some of them. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

You usually walk into rooms like I'm Tom.

SPEAKER_00

Hey! Yeah. Um I I enter like Kramer and just kind of first slide in. Hey, hey, it's me, Tom. But we see Krusty in there as well, and he's microwaving a burrito. But he's got the the the mask on over his eyes. Um and immediately you kind of like you don't even pick up on it immediately. You're just like, oh, he's just that's Krusty. He's being silly. What's he doing? Yeah, and and he's microwaving a burrito, they show him reading, reading from a magazine. A magazine, yeah. And um Homer does settles on tr uh triple chocolate as he's picking out his ice cream. Well, the new flavor. Yeah. Chocolate, double chocolate, new flavor, triple chocolate.

SPEAKER_01

So he's so he settles on that, right? Yes, um, and then as he's going to the register, he's he steps on Krusty's foot. Is that sort of the Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I think it is it when he it's either when he's going there or when he's leaving.

SPEAKER_01

Um okay, sure, sure, sure. You forget.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, so he steps on Krusty's foot way down on the toe, you know. Um which is not, you know, on his oversized shoe. Yeah, we did that. We just did that in unison. That was weird. Um steps on him and um and the voice comes out different, you know.

SPEAKER_01

It's like actually Krusty's voice, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like a version of it.

SPEAKER_00

The scream is like, is like uh a deeper voice, and then and then he comes in and he you know he he robs a poo.

SPEAKER_01

Well, he gets he's like that's when we see the gun come out, right? Homer jumps into the display of chips. Um he fits pretty well in there, he hides pretty well. He just disappears. Comfortable, safe, yeah. Yeah, like he knew what he was doing.

SPEAKER_00

But I do like I do like how a poo is like, I know I'm being robbed. Like Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know what I'm doing. Yeah, he's like, I I work here. This is this is a regular occurrence.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's awful. I imagine uh working in a place like that that's open overnight, uh running into something like that. Oh just yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I've never had to do that sort of work, but even not the robberies, I'm sure just the characters you see come in at night and the stuff you have to deal with and having a bathroom and all like oh yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And you speak of that like from the experience of being the person that comes in at 2 a.m. Well, you know, we gotta use the bathroom. So it cuts to Homer uh in the parking lot describing the robber to a uh clearly French sketch artist uh who nails it, gets the picture.

SPEAKER_00

This is this is interesting too, yes. The the sketch artist has does an incredible job, but we find out less than like 30 minutes to an hour later of real time in this in Springfield that they have the video. They've got security footage, yeah. I don't, you know. Um but I and the other thing I like about this is that while Homer is having this wild, wild night at the quickie mart, they just keep panning back to the kids like uh watching these slides of sombreros with their sombreros, with their authentic Mexican dish, and it's just tacos.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's a poor uh poor situation they have themselves in there. Uh and then you know, to have to see what happened on the news, it's kind of difficult for all of them, right?

SPEAKER_00

Homer almost tries to shield Bart from this as well. Um, you know, he says, wait, you like that clown guy, right? You're kind of like uh and crummy, crummy. Yeah, he's like, Yeah, I yeah, I based my whole life on him, on his teachings. And he's like, Well, maybe you better go upstairs. And then I think this is the first time we have mention of Kent Brockman.

SPEAKER_01

It is and then and the I love this because they mention him, but then it's a uh a guest anchor, it's a substitute because he's out of town.

SPEAKER_00

Right, yeah, such a weird way to introduce a character. Um and we, you know, what is it, Nightline or something with Kent Brockman or something? You know, and and they're like with Kent Bruckman, and then they pan out, and you see this guy, and he's like, Kent Bruckman is off today. Like, like, what? Who are who are you?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Springfield Action News, right, with Emmy Award-winning anchor man Kent Brockman. And I'm Scott Christian covering it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Like um, and then a little bit later we see, you know, after you know, skipping ahead a little bit just to go back to the Kent Bruckman. Kent Brockman is on. They just use him later in the episode. Reference that it's him, but you just have to kind of put that together, or obviously we know because we've seen that ahead. But you're you know, I I thought that was a very interesting way to introduce a character. Like, hey, we have this guy, Kent Bruckman, and he's not here.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it's so funny because like in retrospect, that's it's it's very humorous. And I don't know like what I would think of it, like watching it the first time through as a 40-something. So if I was watching that for the first time, like that would be kind of meaningless.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Yeah, but uh yeah, looking back at it's pretty much. He becomes such an important character, right? Yeah, he yeah, he is he I mean, he's the newsman. He reads the nightly news.

SPEAKER_01

The the other like um reveal in all of this is that um uh they cut to Krusty coming home. Like, you know, the robberies happened and they sort of show Krusty coming into his apartment and pouring himself this giant drink where it's just like a butt uh it you know, looks like a brown liquor of some sort, whiskey bourbon, whatever, and then just like a splash of soda water. And um I think like that like little splash of soda water gag was something that I did not pick up on as a kid. Like, you know, the meaning of that, and like you know, this is implying he drinks a lot. Uh this is just sort of how he winds down his night with basically a whole bottle of uh whiskey.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, no, and that's I mean, as someone who's worked with kids in their life, uh this is common. Uh you know, maybe not for me, but you know, you see people working with kids is is tough. And I'm sure being uh being a performer, a clown, uh, you know, having hosting a TV show, this you know, you see a lot of this stuff in Hollywood too.

SPEAKER_01

So I I I think the idea of having like a fake uh presentation, outward presentation, is exhausting. And a lot of people do it in like all sorts of different ways. We have these sort of personas that we put on. Uh but that can be so exhausting. It's mentally so taxing. Uh so for so for a guy like this that has so many vices to have to be, hey, hey, in front of kids all day long. Uh yeah, it's it sort of makes sense what's going on there. Uh the SWAT team comes in aggressively, right?

SPEAKER_00

Everybody. Oh my like the it this had to have been more than just the Springfield PD. For a little local robbery. Um that tracked him down immediately.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. Well, once they had a name, they they knew where he lived, right? But they hold the oversized gun down to his head, like it's a 44 magnum that they're holding on him. Uh and funny sight gag and all of that. And then uh Wiggum going through the Miranda Miranda writes and just blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

SPEAKER_00

You have the right right to remain silent and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Nobody wants to hear that stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Uh, then the police lineup uh where they they do bring Homer in as the witness, um, and uh uh Wiggins tells them to send him the clowns, again, a reference to the song uh written by Stephen Sondheim. Uh anyway. Um Homer can't stop laughing. It's it's it's just cracking him up to see this lineup of clowns come in. And it's funny that they're all in their full clown makeup and this is all happening at night, right?

SPEAKER_00

This scene reminds me of uh have you do you have you watched Brooklyn 99 at all? I like episodes, yeah. So there's a famous uh Brooklyn 99 scene with uh with a police lineup. And have you seen that? No. I will send it to you. It is fantastic. It reminded me of this. It's just a whole like how the kind of the police lineup like just takes its own. And Brooklyn 99 is a comedy. It was like a whole they started singing a song. It's like it's wild. Um I'll send it to you. But people that are listening know like that's one of the greatest police lineup scenes in television history, and that's where my brain immediately went when we see all these clowns walk in.

SPEAKER_01

I think my mind went into the usual suspects, sort of the lineup scene in that movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, absolutely. Um less comedic, I think. But there's comedic components. There is, absolutely, absolutely. I said less, yes. No, um, but yeah. Um I'll have to send you that though, but that that is that is funny. Everyone listening, go go and watch that scene. Good Brooklyn 99 police lineup. That's all you gotta type in. You'll find it.

SPEAKER_02

So good.

SPEAKER_01

Uh so yeah. Um so Homer's back at the house, they they're watching the news. Uh Homer starts to panic, tries to rush Bart out, as we kind of talked about before. Um, I like they also make a reference to um Krusty being on the other network versus the channel that they're on. Yes. Uh he appears opposite of Hobo Hank.

SPEAKER_00

I I wonder if we'll hear more about Hobo Hank.

SPEAKER_01

I don't really remember him as I don't think you actually do. I I looked looked into it, and I think there was like actually somebody put out a book about Hobo Hank at some point, but uh something like that. But Hobo Hank's Hijinx Hour was the name of the show. Uh, but there's no like recurrence of that character that I could find on The Simpsons.

SPEAKER_00

And we don't even see it, yeah. Interesting. But maybe he got canceled, you know? Might have, yeah, for doing something even worse. Or for having such low ratings.

SPEAKER_01

Um let's see. So then um after they like comfort Bard, they show him up in his room with still all the like Krusty stuff and like can't believe it. Uh cuts to another news opening, um, where we do actually see Kent Brockman, as we talked about before. Yes. Um, it they kind of explain who Krusty is, hey, he has all these endorsements, including the pork products, which led to the uh near fate on the air heart attack.

SPEAKER_00

On air heart attack, and they show it. It's it's it's hilarious. They bring it up.

SPEAKER_01

As a blooper, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's so funny. And even Kent Brockman breaks character a little bit, like and he's laughing juggles at this man having a heart attack on on live TV. Um, hilarious. I did write down a few of the um of the news articles and stuff that were already. Now, this is this this episode is happening like after homework gets home. So this is all breaking fast news. But the you know, the the headline of the show is Krusty gets busted the day the laughter died. Yeah, which is which is great. Um Timely magazine names him the crook of the crook of the year already. Like um News Weekly says the thing rhymes with dastard. Okay, but yeah, I just watched it again this morning, um, and my son was laughing at that. He goes, I know what rhymes with dastard. Yeah, me too.

SPEAKER_01

Um is it mustard?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and and then and then uh a a news uh a magazine cover of today's guns, and it shows a Pooh with like a snarled face holding up a 357 magnum, and it says the clown stopper.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we don't we don't really get a sense of uh a Pooh doing anything like that until later episodes, right?

unknown

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Clearly stirs something up in him when this happens.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean this is but but he but again he had said that this is a regular occurrence, he knows what a robbery is, you know. So interesting little things. Um also a side note in this is they t they give us uh uh um Cressy's origins, and he was a he was a street mime in Topelo, Mississippi. Yeah. Yep. Which seems like someone just probably just picked a street mime and then threw a dart at the United States and said, Oh, where is he from? Uh Topelo, Mississippi.

SPEAKER_01

I yeah, maybe I don't know much about the culture of the region. Maybe there's mime. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I don't know. If you're from Topelo, Mississippi, uh let us know. That might not even be a real place. Who knows? I don't know. Shout out to anyone if they're over there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. We'll get an intern on that. Um well. Um, so you know, this this sort of gives um uh the reaction that's starting to come up from the community, right? Uh during Lovejoy's sermon, he's going off about how uh they they need to burn crusty merchandise.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes. Uh oh, and then the other thing that they do mention, uh which I will say is good for the news is that they say that he's been a champion um in uh uh donating money towards liter illiteracy. Yes, yes, which is which is good. You like to see charitable uh donations and things like that. And he's and that actually does play a factor. But yes, we go right to Revel and Reverend Lovejoy, and he wants the whole town to burn all this merchandise of Krusties.

SPEAKER_01

Um and and then they got the march of uh they're bringing Krusty up the courtroom stairs. He's uh without his makeup, the first time you see him without his makeup. Um and uh the the kids observe that he's got small feet, uh and and you know everybody's sort of giving him like boo-boo, and and Bart's saying, like, I you know, I know you didn't do it. Tell me you didn't do it.

SPEAKER_00

And his lawyer pops right in and is like, no comment. No comment, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But he says, I didn't do it, which is the line, and then everybody laughs.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I didn't do it.

SPEAKER_01

And and then in court, when they ask him how he pleads, he pleads guilty just because he doesn't really know any better, doesn't know the words. I know oops, I mean not guilty. Yeah, opening night jitters. Yes. And uh again, that's where we see the A113 on his uh on his prison shirt, right? Yep. Um uh let's see, cuts, I think, then, to the family back at home, the Simpsons family throwing away crusty products. Um Marge refers to him as an insane criminal genius, which I think is such a leap.

SPEAKER_00

An insane criminal genius who got caught immediately trying to hold up a quickie mark. Okay, sure. Sure, Marge. Got it. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Um I again, I think it's just like the uproar and like how it's snowballed and you know uh what they start to say about somebody like this in the community. Once it starts, it it just keeps going, keeps going.

SPEAKER_00

That is true. You do one, you do one poor thing, and then everyone judges you for everything you do, you know. Um obviously this is a pretty pretty poor thing, you know. Um but we we then we start to realize that Bart truly doesn't believe that this is true. Right. Yes. He uh, you know, and and it takes a little convincing with Lisa because Lisa starts watching the Sideshow Bob show or whatever. She gets into it, yeah whatever they call it, the Sideshow Bob Cavalcade of Whimsy. Yes, I love that. Um and uh and and with with his show, it's actually it sounds like a great little show.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, he's he's he wants to add more, he wants to still have the comedy, but also teach about nutrition, self-esteem, etiquette, and the lively arts.

SPEAKER_00

Right. I mean, it sounds like a great, wholesome little kid show. It reminds me of um at the end of Mrs. Doubtfire when Robin Williams' character, Mrs. Doubtfire, has a has a show and she teaches the kids at the school. Dinosaurs or something. Yeah, it's it's great. Um so you know, you look at this and you're kind of like, oh, this is I'm sure the parents in town were like, oh, this show is much nicer. This is great, you know, if they're paying attention.

SPEAKER_01

And it kept it kept an audience, it seems like they're still getting a crowd.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the crowd is full, and and Lisa's watching it. She's like, come on, Bart, just join the just join in. Yeah, but but but Bart is pretty pretty consistent that no, Krusty did not do this.

SPEAKER_01

His hero did not do this, right? And he's standing, he's standing by his side. Yeah. Kind of cuts back and forth, right? Um, to like them investigating, they go to the quickie mart. Um there is a spot. There, yeah. Sorry, you were you were going there. Go for it. Oh, just the the startle response that a pooh has when they walk in and he's like, ducks.

SPEAKER_00

Two kids walking into a store and ducks behind the counter. Um poor guy. He's clearly traumatized. Absolutely. And and they go to they show immediate evidence with the pacemaker. Um, don't use the microwave if you're on a pacemaker. And they mention in the nightline report that Krusty has a pacemaker from the heart attack, and and Lisa reminds Bart we wrote we wrote them letters saying, you know, good luck with your pacemaker. Um and then they go right to the uh magazines, and a pooh is like, there those are it's not for browsing. She knows and he threatens them.

SPEAKER_01

Move them along. I mean, I don't know. We've already seen this. Uh people shoplift there at earlier episodes. Is it is the intern bothering you? No, the intern's here, that's fine. Um all good. Um let's see. And and so they're they're like thinking and like, does he have any enemies? And they're gonna ask his best friend, they're gonna go ask Sideshow Bob.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. And they they arrive, um, they arrive at you know Sideshow Bob's studios to see what's going on. And um, and he they he they are immediately let in. Yes, he's in contract negotiations.

SPEAKER_01

They're still filming first, and they that's where it like sort of cuts in. He's reading from the man in the iron mask to the to the audience. Yes, chapter 35.

SPEAKER_00

So how long how you know how how much time has gone by here?

SPEAKER_01

That's true. That's a good point. Like, how long has this trial been going on? You think about these like big trials from around that time, they they seemed like they went on forever, right?

SPEAKER_00

The the the fear was always getting jury duty and being put on a put on a trial where you're you know your life is interrupted for two months. Have you ever been on a trial? Uh no, I was I was picked for jury duty once um in Massachusetts. I've now lived in Maine for like 15 years and nothing, so I'm sure they'll get that call tomorrow. Yeah, once they hear this. Yeah. Once they're listening to our Simpsons podcast. Um but I got thrown off. It was like a it was like a slip and fall on a Walmart. And at the time I worked um at a grocery store and they were like, Oh, do you ever sweep up messes? I'm like, Yeah, all the time. And they were like, get this kid out of here.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, he can't be impartial. Yeah, right. Like, um, usually yeah, usually if I say I'm a psychiatrist, they're just like, we don't want you here. Get out of here. Yeah. You're not a typical peer, get out of here. Yeah, yeah. There was one time that I was uh brought in as a backup, um, but then then I think it all fell apart anyway, so they just sent us home. So again, also in Massachusetts, like I think um like living there as an adult, I probably lived there like six or seven years as an adult and you know got called in six or seven times. And then since I've been uh the time I lived in Maine, I was never called there. Uh time I've been in Wisconsin, it's been seven years, I haven't been called yet here either. So crazy. Um anyway.

SPEAKER_00

Massachusetts, you know, a lot of a lot of crime, apparently.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, a lot of need for juries. I guess different judicial system there. Uh so he walks off stage. Um he he's sort of laughing. Um, uh let's see. No, it sorry, I'm confusing the different parts of it. Not a big deal. Sorry, audience. Fine, yeah, it's fine.

SPEAKER_00

No, yeah, no, but so when when Bart and Lisa go in there, um you know, they bring they have Maggie with them, number one. They just they're going downtown to the studios to confront Sideshow Bob and ask him questions, and they bring Maggie. And he kind of is like, oh, here's some tickets, go watch the show. Some three tickets so they can be a part of the show. Yeah. Yeah. Um and Bart becomes uh becomes a part of the segment on the on the show.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Well, they they do the sort of similar introduction, but it starts off with whom do you love? So they're trying to use the more uh proper English there, um, which is very funny. Um and the and Bob notices that there's like one forlorn-looking uh youngster out in the crowd, and that's uh that's how he sort of ropes Bart in to like talk in this new segment he wants to start where he helps out pre-adolescents with very new segment choices.

SPEAKER_00

And and and they have the stage set up and it says choices already. Come sit down with me, Bart. And this is where Bart, you know, you know, Bart accuses him of the um, he says the microwave, I think, part.

SPEAKER_01

Well, first he's saying that like it couldn't possibly be crossed because of all of these things, right? He doesn't directly accuse Sideshow Bob.

SPEAKER_00

He doesn't know yet, you know. It hasn't really clicked on him. Um the response with the pacemaker near the microwave, Sideshow Bob says, you know, well, he never trusted medical advice anyway. And that you know makes sense. And then he says, Well, he he couldn't read, and he was reading this magazine. And I like how Sideshow Bob pulls out the exact magazine of this one that you and he's basically he's like, no, this is very funny. This is a great magazine.

SPEAKER_01

You can enjoy the pictures, yeah, the characters, right?

SPEAKER_00

Um so yeah, and and then it's you know but he's but he's trying to get Bart to like move on.

SPEAKER_01

Like, we gotta get past this, right?

SPEAKER_00

Right, right. And he's saying, you know, we all miss Krusty, and I really have big shoes to fill. Yes, yes, my big shoes to fill.

SPEAKER_01

And that's where it starts to echo.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we hear the echoing a lot in Bart Bart's head, and he's like, So he does the only natural thing, you know. He grabs grabs a mallet, grabs a mallet and smashes his his foot and you know, basically says, You did it, you have the big shoes. His giant feet, yeah. You know, and there was a weird comment in this where he says, Um Krusty has little feet like all good-hearted people. That's right, that's right, Tom. How does that feel with your big feet? I was like, come on. Um, but also, I don't know, accurate.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Uh uh, but I like how the police are watching it, like just not live and like, huh? How did we miss that?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and Wiggum tells him, like, go get down to the studio and get them, boys.

SPEAKER_01

But but then then Bob just like admits to it all, and like I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for these meddling kids, just you know, very like Scooby-Doo.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and as he's being handcuffed and put into the big, the big like truck prison, but mobile prison thing, like not just back of the cop car, like the big the paddy wagon. The paddy wagon, yeah. Um he's like that's derogatory, sorry. We're we're from around Boston.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's right. I'm I'm a good chunk of Irish, so that's okay. I can say that.

SPEAKER_00

Same, same. Um, but you know, he's saying uh these children are smart. Don't underestimate them. Don't underestimate them. They caught me.

SPEAKER_01

He he's seeing himself again as this criminal genius, which he later makes references to in other episodes. I wonder how many episodes Sideshow Bob is in. Um I oh yeah, that's something you probably have to pull up. But um right now. Maybe if you're pulling that up. So Wig Wigum apologizes as they're releasing Krusty. Krusty sort of ticked off about it, Homer apologizes, and then uh Krusty thanks Bart, right? Um, and then they get back to Bart's bedroom, and he's got all his Krusty stuff on the wall, on his bed, the dolls, the posters, all of that stuff. So that's how it wraps up. But how many, how many times has Side Joe Bob been on?

SPEAKER_00

So as of season 36, which is 2024 to 2025, um, take a guess. How many has he appeared in? Um I I know it's not all of them.

SPEAKER_01

Um and I and I know there's a there's a couple of gaps where it's like five or six years between them. So I want to say 2020?

SPEAKER_00

I'd say that's a great guess. So it has listed here that he's he's appeared in over 40 episodes of The Simpsons with 25 speaking roles and roughly 15 to 16 featured roles as the main antagonist. Okay. So um yeah, he's um we are we're not gonna see him again until season three. Okay. Um and then you know, then we start uh then we go through a while season season five, season six, season seven, season eight, uh then he skips a while. One, two, skip a few. Um season twelve, fourteen, seventeen, nineteen. So yeah, he's in th those are the ones where he's the main kind of the main piece to an episode. Um some great ones coming up. We I mean we know this this has set up the future of Sideshow Bob and Bart, their kind of rivalry and not rivalry, just Sideshow Bob really wants to harm Bart for putting him away. Because he had that taste of being the star.

SPEAKER_01

Right, right, right. It felt so good. Um yeah, I mean, uh some of the episodes like the Cape Fear episode, uh, I I think is just one of it it might even be in my top ten uh. I think so too.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And I think this episode, um we'll we'll wrap it up here. It basically wraps up and Bart goes home and all of his all of his room is now littered with Krusty stuff and he gets a signed photo from Krusty with his picture with him. Um but this episode I think is my favorite so far of season. And just what it means and having Kelsey Grammar involved and just all of the setup for future episodes.

SPEAKER_01

It it is such a huge tie into the entire series. Um, you know, continues with m world building about, you know, Bart having an emesis and all of that. Right, right. Which is important. And then it was uh well received, I think we said the other day.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, eight eight point three out of ten on um IMDB, which I think is the top ranking episode of season one.

SPEAKER_01

Um it feels more like future seasons than some of the earlier episodes, which you know, there's something about like the arc of the um first few episodes where like, I don't know, there's like a little bit of a story and then it just ends. And yeah, um this this one has a little bit more nuance to it. The characters are there's like back and forths going on, there's different things going on in different worlds for these characters. Um so so it feels more like you know it's starting to hit its stride.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. And I and I will say the only the one part about this um episode that is a little clunky and slow at the beginning is just the Homer is doing such a like has such an exciting night happening, and then we just constantly go back to watching these slides. It's where the family is just bored out of their mind and Patty and Selma. I mean, where we're looking at pictures of tacos, we we see a picture of Selma or one of which one of them just laying out on the beach, you know.

SPEAKER_01

With a dying pointy bikini.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes.

SPEAKER_01

So that's where we get the Aikarumba, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yep, yeah. I think I think ah, Icarumba, which I mean, we I'm sure we've all seen photo family photos when we were younger, and just like uh why am I looking at my aunt like this? Gross. I mean, maybe not everybody, I don't know. Um, but you can you can feel Bart's like uh disdain for that moment, you know, he just doesn't want to even be be there. Um we have such an exciting thing happening on the other side of town.

SPEAKER_01

That's life, man, right? There's either sort of the mundane or uh crazy stuff happens too. So yeah, yeah. Uh so we got one more episode left for this season, Tom.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes. We have one more episode left in season one. Um, thanks for thank you to everyone that's been listening so far. Um, it's it's been fun so far. I'm really I'm I'm signing on, I'm signing my contract for season two. Don't worry. I'm still looking it over. There's some terms that you um but yeah, next week we will have uh season one, episode 13, short season. Um the seasons get much longer after this first one, Andrew.

SPEAKER_01

So a little bit more laborious.

SPEAKER_00

Um Some Enchanted Evening is the name of the episode, and this is the one with the babysitter. Um the lead in says Homer takes Marge out for a night on the town to make up for his recent neglecting of her, leaving the kids with a sinister babysitter who has a diabolical secret.

SPEAKER_01

I'm curious, like how it's uh I think it's gonna feel jarring. I haven't actually gone ahead and watched this one. Uh I probably haven't seen this episode in 25 years. Um, but I I from what I understand, this was the first episode they produced, right? And yes, so the animation issues and all of that. So it got delayed. Um, but I I think the animation style compared to the even the evolution of the animation style into this this episode that we just talked about, where Krusty gets busted, I think is dramatically different.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it it it certainly is. And um just looking at the release dates, so uh Simpsons was coming out um basically once every other week back in 1990. Um we had a March 18th, 1990, March 25th, that was Homer's Night Out, but then uh Crepes of Wrath was April 15th, Krusty Gets Busted was April 29th, and Some Enchanted Evening was May 13th. So they went they they ended the season on a on a kind of a slog. Um very slow. And I think they if you could go back and do it again, I think you I think you end the season with Krusty Gets Busted. I think so. And some Enchanted Evening gets thrown in the kind of thing.

SPEAKER_01

Somewhere in the early middle, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so uh it'll be fun. We'll we'll certainly take a look at it. But um I am very excited because we are four episodes away from our very first tree house of horror. Oh boy. And I don't know what we're gonna do. We haven't discussed uh exactly what we're gonna be doing with the treehouse of horror, but we're gonna be doing a little bit different format because um I don't know, we'll see. Um we'll figure it out.

SPEAKER_01

It's exciting. I know we've been like talking about it for uh a few months now about oh geez, what are we gonna do for this episode? Because they because they are complex and uh they're just three and one, you know, it's like so maybe we'll do them as mini episodes.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know how we'll do that. Um, but it'll be fun. I've also, without your permission, sorry, I'm just doing these things on my own. I've reached out to a couple of my Simpson loving friends and thought about bringing a third person in on certain episodes that are that deserve more attention. So we'll go from there too. Oh, okay. We're wrapping up the season though, even though we have one more to go.

SPEAKER_01

So we do have one more, but uh yeah, some enchanted evening coming up. So uh, you know, thank you for listening and uh come back and join us again.

SPEAKER_00

Donuts on the couch. Yes, growing up on Evergreen Terrace. Thanks everyone, and we'll see you soon. Bye.

SPEAKER_03

Thanks for listening to Donuts on the Couch, growing up on Evergreen Terrace, yet another Simpsons Rewatch podcast.
