The Undeniable Podcast explores the mindset, leadership principles, and performance habits that separate high achievers from everyone else. Through candid conversations and elaborate dissection of concepts with elite performers, coaches, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders, each episode equips listeners with practical strategies to build clarity, raise their standards, and become undeniable in every area of life.
Attribute two from Coach John Williams' book The Champions Code: The Five Attributes of Winners hits close to home — physical fitness, a subject he spent the bulk of his career immersed in through human performance work.
Coach John's core argument: fatigue and poor physical fitness aren't just health issues, they're silent decision-makers. They erode judgment, discretion, and resilience before you even realize a decision needed to be made — and that erosion doesn't stay contained to the gym or the athletic field. It shows up in the boardroom, in parenting, in every relationship that depends on you being at your best.
He pushes back directly on the idea that physical fitness is only relevant to athletes. Whether you're a hedge fund manager, a CEO, or head of marketing, your livelihood still runs through your body — it just looks different than it does for a professional athlete. The message isn't about chasing peak performance for its own sake; it's about refusing to let your body become the ceiling on everything else you're capable of.
The takeaway: your body isn't separate from your career or your relationships — it's the launch pad for both. Neglect it, and everything else built on top of it is at risk.

Welcome back, or welcome to the undeniable podcast. I am Coach John, and today's episode we are going to talk about attribute number two from my book, The Champions Code: Five Attributes of Winners. And that attribute is physical fitness. This is something that I hold near and dear to my heart as I spent the greater percentage of my career in the human performance space. I think that in and of itself is probably pretty telling. So without further ado, let's jump right in. The moment that people get busy, they typically tend to neglect themselves pretty aggressively. And that leads to a whole host of problems. Obviously, there's a uh a health and quality of life um decline. There can be psychological decline as well. And that usually happens kind of in a cascade form, and that's what I want to really address today. That psychological that psychological stability or platform that you're standing on that allows you to do your best work, that allows you to have meaningful interactions and relationships with people around you, whether they be your co-workers or your family members or anyone in your social circle, that starts to degrade a bit when you are quite literally fighting for your life. When you are not feeling physically well, then you are not well. You are dis-eased in some way, shape, or form. And basically that means that you are not at ease. Your body is not at ease. And if your body is not at ease, then your mind cannot be at ease. So fatigue, uh, poor physical fitness, all of these things start to make decisions for us, decisions that we are not even cognizant at decisions, fatigue, these things begin to make decisions for us, and these are decisions that we are not even necessarily cognizant of existing. Fatigue, poor physical fitness, these are silent and unknown decision makers for us, and many times these decisions we are not even cognizant that they are being made or need to be made, but fatigue and poor physical fitness has already made the decision before we get an opportunity to even review the data. So when that happens, your judgment is compromised, your discretion is compromised, your tolerance, your resistance, your resilience is also severely compromised. And if you will ask any leader in a powerful position or any parent that is undergoing a stressful situation at the time, they will tell you that all it takes is one more straw, and that'll be it for the camel. Well, fatigue, poor physical fitness, that's that straw. But that straw doesn't weigh ounces, it feels like it weighs tons. If if it's not surrounded or supported by some form of physical fitness, you're going to be in trouble. Most people think when I'm this is a slight aside here. Most people think when I start talking about physical fitness that I'm I'm really just speaking to athletes. But here's the deal. Athletes rely on their body for their livelihood for the most part. In the boardroom, you are also relying on your body for your livelihood. It just looks different. So if you think because you are a hedge fund manager, or because you're a CEO, or because you are head of the marketing department or community outreach, that your physical fitness does not impact what you can do, what you are capable of doing, but most importantly, what you are willing to do on a daily basis, you are sadly mistaken. And one of the attributes that separates winners from everyone else is their attention to the physical fitness component. They want to make sure that their body is not the limiting factor in their performance. Your body is not separate from your career. Your body is not this obscure extra thing that is out there for you to manipulate and use at your discretion without consequence or repercussion. Your body is your ally, your attribute, your tool, but it's also your foundation, your platform, your launch pad. Everything great that you will ever accomplish is done in conjunction with, not in absence of, your body. So I encourage you to do what you need to do on a regular and continuous basis to make sure that you're in optimal position to launch each and every day.

Presented in a manner throughout this life that asks questions.
SPEAKER_01
Are you capable of handling this? Are you ready to manage this? Are you physically, psychologically, and emotionally able to navigate this terrain?
SPEAKER_00
Because if you are, great.
SPEAKER_01
If not, then you go no further. As I said earlier, you don't want your body to be the limiter for your performance. Of course, it always will be. There's always a limit. But if you can push that limit way far down the road, if you can stave off the effects of time, age, degradation as long as you can, as productively as you can, then imagine what kind of life you will lead. Imagine the quality of the work you can produce. Imagine the impact you can have on the lives of the people that you care about and look up to you and look to you for support, guidance, instruction, mentorship, camaraderie.
SPEAKER_00
Imagine the power that that could give you.
SPEAKER_01
Key takeaway for today, if you're not prioritizing your physical fitness because you think you're not an athlete, so you don't need to necessarily focus on this in order to excel at what it is you're doing, then hear me carefully when I tell you this.
SPEAKER_00
You're wrong. You can do nothing if your body fails you. When the machine stops, everything stops.
SPEAKER_01
I get into much more detail talking about how significant it is and the specific ways that it affects decision making and even the relationships that you have. If you feel like this has resonated with you in some way, then share it with someone you care about.
