The Commanders and a Wizards SL recap

In this episode, I discuss my thoughts on the Commanders, Adam Peters' initial years as GM, the coaching staff, and my expectations for the season. I also conclude the Wizards Summer League with a brief talk about AJ, analyze how the Lu Dort trade relates to the Trae Young extension discourse, and share my views on a potential AD extension.

Welcome to the Overreacting Since Kickoff podcast, your source for DMV sports news and opinions. On today's episode, I want to discuss the commanders, my general thoughts of them, where I think they're going to be going this year, what are the pitfalls I see, and my general feelings of the new administration that has been brought in. So obviously, if you've been a Commanders fan for a while, you probably don't call them the Commanders, you call them the original team name. So it's sort of an odd thing with rooting for them because at w at one hand, I mean, the Dan Snyder era was horrific. They were terrible every year, and there was never a sense that they were going to be successful ever. And even if they somehow managed to be successful, Dan Snyder would have stepped in and ruined it. And so we always had this in the back of our head, it's not going to work out. But we sort of just ignored it because we're fans of the teams. And of course, with the Josh Harris group in charge, that has changed a little bit. So we see that they can be successful. They're very successful. The not the first year here on the team, but the second year on the team with the new regime of Adam Peters, with Dan Quinn, Cliff Kingsbury running the show, and you know, they played amazingly. I think most of that could be attributed to two things. One, a very weak schedule that they played. And not only was the schedule a very weak schedule, they didn't play any good quarterbacks. So the defense, even though it was horrific, the other team's quarterbacks weren't good. And we had an amazing play from Jaden Daniels. He sort of I don't want to say shocked everybody, but sometimes when you're, you know, they weren't expecting him to be as good as he was, and it was hard for them, them being the other teams, to address that, especially since they weren't playing any good teams. And we clearly saw them get exposed in the NFC Championship game against the Eagles. And so you take that into account, we thought we were in a good trajectory, and then last year, uh things just derailed with all the injuries that happened, especially to Jaden Daniels. But I really think what derailed the team last year was not necessarily the injuries. I think what did derailed them last year was Adam Peters. Now, he hasn't been the GM for long enough to make a, you know, is he good or not decision yet, but I don't think he did a good job two years ago last year. I think he botched the Terry McLaurin extension. And you can argue both ways whether Terry McLaurin should have gotten an extension or shouldn't have. I know you can point to analytics with the age, and yeah, I don't want to give somebody who's in their 30s a long-term extension for a lot of money. But at the same time, you didn't bring anybody else in. He didn't draft anybody to replace him. So there was this big hole in the wide receiver core that you did not replace. And so of course he had the upper hand in the negotiation. Doesn't matter that the contract that he ended up signing wasn't this massive win for Terry McLaurin. It probably was a win for the Commanders in terms of years and money that was given to Terry McLaurin. But it sort of was like no plan B. I mean, if your plan B was Noah Brown, which was a terrible idea because he's always injured, I just think he botched the whole offseason after their successful year. Didn't really sign anybody, didn't really add anybody. Some of the draft picks didn't have not really panned out. And again, I'm not going to say after two years you can categorically call a player a bust, but we can look at some of the picks that they didn't make at the same position, and we could see that he made the wrong choice. Big glaring one is uh Mike Sanrestel versus Cooper Dejean. They could have had Cooper Dejean, but they chose Mikey Sanresto. And I know he had a great first year, but not a good second year. It was pretty bad. The entire defense was horrific. And so my hope is that it was the coaching was the problem, and not the player. Also, we can look at their drafting of Ben Sennett. That did not pan out either. And you can I've seen people argue that it was Cliff Kingsbury's system that does not fit in with the skill set of Ben Sinett. I mean, that's a pretty bad pick then, because Cliff Kingsbury was your coach. I'm almost certain, though, they felt that Cliff Kingsbury would be one and done. And maybe that's what it was, and that, okay, we'll move on. And of course he wasn't, and we saw why he's not a head coach. He made zero adjustments to anything in the entire offseason. Ah, excuse me, in the entire during the season. And his offensive strategy of not huddling, not going under center, and being exclusively shotgun doesn't necessarily work very well consistently. We can see that it was very difficult for any of the offensive linemen to make more strategic changes during a drive because it was quick to the f quick. They couldn't make big adjustments. I think there were some uh interviews in which some of the offensive linemen said that they knew what they were supposed to do, but it was hard for them to make changes on the fly. They could make changes, of course, when they're sitting on the bench, but during a drive they couldn't because they had to be hyper-focused on their who they were covering and not make adjustments to the left and the right. But that being said, I just Ben Senate was not a good draft pick currently, and we can clearly see it was not a good draft pick because they went out and signed Chigaquanquo for this year. The other signing, the other uh drafting of Luke McCaffrey has not panned out at all. I know he got injured, and I know he's been good on kickoff returns, but honestly, I think you could find a kickoff return specialist who's going to be okay pretty easily. That's not going to be something that I would prioritize in the free agent market, and that's clearly not someone I would prioritize with the 100 overall pick. We also saw Jalen Lane not do much. It's not a good route runner, not a good wide receiver. Again, good punt returner, but there's so many glaring holes in the offense that prioritizing a punt returner over, say, a big wide receiver, I think is a misstep. And I think Adam Peters, I don't want to use the term botched, his second year, but I think he did. Uh we can also point to the uh Lattimore trade as being a horrific bust. I was in favor of that. I thought it was a good move. He it just didn't pan out. So whether or not that was the right move or not to make, it didn't turn out. Um we do have some wins, of course. The Laramie Tunsell trade came out great. Uh he I definitely was worth the second round pick that they didn't have this year for him. He even showed up to OTAs, voluntary OTAs, which was great. I know it's one day. And he's been working with Josh Connorly, he's been working with the other offensive linemen, so that was a good move. But I just don't think currently Adam Peters has set up the team to be successful. He's really only set it up in the hopes and dreams that Jaden Daniels plays similarly to what he did his rookie season. Because they really haven't picked anybody or got anybody who can play wide receiver. Yes, they drafted somebody in the third round. Yeah, he could be really good. But again, that's a possession receiver, that's a slot receiver, which are very important. You can make a career out of that, and you can go to the Hall of Fame for that. But I just feel as if they're missing somebody that can just outrun everybody, a big target down the field. And I know if you look at some of the free agents they tried to get, if you look, there just wasn't too much to go and get. So you can argue that way as well. I have argued that in the past, that there really wasn't anybody, but I just I don't know. I'm not really feeling Adam Peters as this amazing GM that he was uh sold to us as. I just think that he might be a little bit out of his depth, and maybe he just needs a few years to, you know, get his groove, and then we'll be fine. Or maybe not. But I just feel as if they haven't done enough on the offense, and I just would rather them not put as much pressure on Jaden Daniels as it unfortunately seems like they're going to. They have addressed some of the running back issues. I know they don't have a superstar running back, but Bill was pretty good. I know he had some fumbling issues, but he was pretty good as a downhill runner. You know, uh Rashad White is a good pass catcher, and I think those two paired up are good. I have no idea what Keatron Allen's going to be. It's kind of it seemed like an odd pick at the time, but I that could have been a hedge pick. And when you start to get into like the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds, sometimes you go for need over best player available. Maybe he was the best player available. I don't know. But I just am I'm sort of curious on the lack of really fixing the offense. And I don't know, maybe David Blau, maybe it's Cliff Kingsbury, and David Blau will come in and have a much more consistent offense, allowing Jaden Daniels to actually do a little more in terms of now you can dump it off to Rashad Wright. Now you can dump it off to Chigakonquo. Then you have your slot receivers instead of just have focus on Jaden running the ball and maybe doing a couple deep routes. And maybe that would work. Maybe that's was the problem for it. It would definitely protect Jaden Daniels more to be able to do it. So it seems like I'm hedging on whether it was good or bad with Adam Peters. My gut feeling, if if you're to ask me how I feel about Adam Peters, it's not good. Um, I just I don't know. There's something about him, I just don't think that it's he's as good as advertised. Coaching staff, that's another issue. Uh, Dan Quinn was not the first choice, was not the second choice, was not the third choice. I do not believe them when they say he was. You kind of have to say that. You can't just you can't as the organization go out there and be like, oh yeah, we we've we flopped on three choices, so we settled for Darren Quinn for that. I know that. So this I would say he's on the hot seat. I would say if they don't make the playoffs, I think he's gone. I know that doesn't bode well in terms of the narrative with the commanders, but I think they will be able to get a better coach at this point. The roster is better than it was when Ben Johnson said no, when Mike McDonald said no, when literally everybody said no, except for Dan Quinn. And part of the reason Dan Quinn didn't say no is because he wanted to get back into the head coaching sphere. And I don't think anybody was gonna hire him. I think this was his only bet. And so he took it. You know, there isn't a million head coaching jobs out there, that's why the Jets always seem to find a coach, that's why the Browns always seem to find a coach. Because there's only a few of these jobs out there, so I don't think he is the per the man to lead the commanders forward. I just don't have any confidence in him. I just don't uh we saw the same problems they had with hiring a defensive coordinator. They definitely swung and miss on a bunch of these. Now I don't know who they would rather hire, and maybe Durante Jones is gonna be a great defensive coordinator. He seems like uh more in control than Dan Quinn and the previous others. I just, my my feelings are a little muted, my excitement's a little muted on the commanders this year. I I'm sort of back to what I always felt with uh the Dan Snyder era whenever I was asked, what are you think they're going to be? And I would always say between 7 and 9 and 9 and 7. I know they play an extra game, so they can't be that way, but that's what I'm feeling now. I'm feeling 8 and 9, 10 and 8, you know, I'm feeling that. I'm feeling squeaking into the second wild card is sort of their ceiling. And that that could be good enough, you know. That would be exciting, that would be 10 wins, maybe 11 wins, but I just I don't feel the same confidence I did the second year, and obviously we shouldn't have had that same confidence. It was a pretty bad year last year. Uh defensively, I feel a lot better, and that could be helpful. You can win a lot of games in the NFL with a subpar or mediocre offense or an offense that isn't clicking, but if you have a good defense, the Seahawks just won a Super Bowl with the offense that they had. So the defense, you could definitely see they tried and they did enhance it. They got way too many edge rushers now. They have uh good linebackers that they've added. They've added, you know, Sonny Styles could be a good linebacker. The cornerback room is going to be bad. It's probably better than it was last year, but the cornerback room is going to be a problem. However, if you can get pressure on the quarterback, you don't need the cornerbacks to cover that long. So I think that was the game plan. Let's patch up the secondary, but let's focus on rushing the quarterback. And again, if the quarterback's running around and he and he has to throw the ball three seconds sooner than he wanted to, that's three fewer seconds that the defensive backs need to cover their men, their wide receivers. So I think defensively, I feel pretty good. I just wish they would have been able to do that on the offensive side on the ball. I don't like relying on Treleon Burks as maybe or Van Jefferson as the saviors for the wide receiver group. I understand Treleon Burks was a first-round pick. I understand that he was drafted solely to replace AJ Brown, but he was drafted by the Titans. They're not the winning organization that other, you know, so it doesn't give me confidence that the Titans viewed him as the savior for them. You know, so I just it it's I'm sort of down on the commanders. I'm sort of back where I was with the Snyder. That I just, for some reason, I just don't feel as if they're going to be anything more than mediocre to above average. I don't know how I feel about Jaden Daniels. His size always has concerned me. I don't view him as necessarily injury prone. He hasn't shown that. There's a lot of factors that went into why he didn't play as much last year when he probably could have. There was no reason to put him out there for the last four games. They weren't making the playoffs, who cares? And some of the games I think he would, you know. So I just, but that being said, I don't know. I I have like RG3 vibes from him, which is not fair to anybody to be uh lumped in with RG3. RG3's problems was not that he was injury prone. RG3's problems were that he didn't listen to anybody. He thought he knew more than everybody. Also, there's also reports that he wasn't smart enough or like football smart enough to run an offense, so the offense had to be dumbed down for him. There's also stories about his father being in the locker room constantly. This is where we get the same the linkage because there's a lot of Jaden Daniels' mother running around and showing up. Personally, I don't know if that's a problem or not, but you I just have those vibes. Now, he's a much better quarterback, Jaden Daniels, than RG3. But until RG, it's until Jaden Daniels has a second quality year, it's gonna stick with me that we might be in a situation where we're stuck with another quarterback who had all the promise, won a Heisman, played amazing, and then turned into a bust. Now I'm okay with that because you always have to start throwing darts for quarterbacks until you find one. And so let's just say it is a bust, find another one. But you need to be willing to cut bait quickly if you feel the quarterback isn't working, and then find another one. The sunk cost fallacy of oh, we, you know, second round, uh second round, second pick overall, we gotta stay with him. I think that would be a terrible idea. If his year is mediocre, then I don't think you sign him to an extension, and I think you start looking for a way out. Hopefully it doesn't come to that. I would rather him play amazing and then boom, then we can just get on Adam Peters for not giving him wide receivers or anything like that. But I I understand if his talent is there, if it is exactly like it was two years ago, then the wide receiver core they have, the tight end room they have, their running backs they have are more than enough to get to the playoffs, and more than enough to make a run in the playoffs if he plays as well as he did his rookie year. And maybe that's what Adam Peters is banking on. Maybe that's what Adam Peters thinks, and that's what he did his signings for. That's why there were some paltry signings. Yes, I know they tried to sign Alec Pierce. Yes, I know they tried to sign Romeo Dobbs. Honestly, I I would not be super excited if they signed Romeo Dobbs, good wide receiver, but I eh. Alec Pierce is an interesting one. I'm not sure. Is he as good? I know he played well under, you know, our buddy uh Daniel Jones, and so you can make that argument that hey, but at the same time, I view him just as a younger Terry McLaurin. I don't want another Terry McLaurin on the roster. I want an AJ Brown, I want a tall receiver, I want a 6'2 receiver, I want a big target that can go straight down the field that will attract more of the defense, the secondary, so that everything else is open in the in the short to mid-range. And they don't have that. That's the biggest problem. They don't have that. And since they don't have that, it almost seems like they're going to have to sort of dink and dunk their way down the field, and then maybe a few, you know, bombs and things every once in a while. But the problem with dinking and dunking is if one of your dinks and dunks don't work, it's now second and long. It's now third and long. And you don't really have a release valve to go down the field on a particular play. And that's concerning. Especially it's concerning when you have a garbage kicking that we have. Now I know there's a competition that's potentially going on, and the guy I hope wins is the one that can be consistently making kicks beyond 40 yards. All right, Jake Moody can't kick beyond 40 yards. I don't care. You could be the greatest, most accurate kicker from within 40 yards that's completely irrelevant in the NFL right now. You need someone who can make kicks from beyond 40, beyond 50 yards. Like Brandon Aubrey can do that. We don't have that. And so that does put more pressure on the offense to get closer for every kick. It makes more pressure to go for it more often on fourth down. And maybe you're on the side that says you should always go on fourth down. Field goals are meaningless. Then Jake Moody's your guy. But I just there needs to be something on the offensive side that can take some of the pressure away from Jaden Daniels. You cannot have Jaden Daniels be the sole reason that you win every single game. Something else, someone else needs to also be able to step in and win some games on their own to relieve the pressure off the quarterback. Alright, I know the quarterback's the most important player on the roster, but you do need to have some players that can step in and win games on their own so that it's not just the Jaden Daniels show. We saw what happened, his rookie year, defense let him down, and there was no way. He tried to heroball it at the end, and that's where some of the interceptions came in. There's nothing you can do about it. He tried to hero ball it uh last year. That's Why they lost the game against the Bears. He fumbled the ball. There needs to be somebody else on the roster who can step up and be the hero on a few games. And they sorely lack that right now. Maybe things will change. After week one, we'll be like, oh, we got something. But right now it feels like we have a on paper an above average defense. That's really important. And then on paper, we have a below average offense. With Jaden Daniels, who unfortunately is still a wild card. We don't know which Jaden we're going to get. Are we going to there's three Jadens right now. We have his rookie year, we have his mediocre showing last year, and we have the injury-prone Jaden Daniels. Those are the three Jaden Daniels we have. I'm not sure we're which one we're going to get. Obviously, I want the rookie, but I have a feeling it's going to be close to the mediocre Jaden that we kind of saw glimpses of last year. At the beginning of the year before he got hurt, and when he came in a few games, he was fine. You can win games with that. But you that's not hero ball. That's uh golf. You know, he's a good quarterback golf if he has an amazing cast around, and that's the problem. We don't have that around him. It's how Sam Darnold was able to win. The offense wasn't great, but they had good players. They had a good running game, they had some good tight ends, they have a good wide receiver. You can start to see all of those things that allowed Sam Darnold not to be the focal point. He didn't have to win all the games. You had other players doing it, and I just am afraid that we don't have the secondary cast of characters to help Jaden Daniels right now. Now, definitely things will change after week one. We'll get a good idea of it, but my personal feeling it's not great. It's not great. I'm a little nervous this year that we're going to be sinking back to where we were. It's gonna be like the Snyder years, we're just eh, we're eh. We're, you know, it's the Ron Rivera years. We're respectable-ish, but not a good team. And time will tell, of course, but my personal feelings is as I mean, it's not like a broken record, it's pretty much what everybody says, that it it appears that Adam Peters did not do enough on the offensive side of the ball, and he is hoping and praying that we get rookie Jaden Daniels. You get rookie Jaden Daniels, it doesn't really matter. He can turn anybody into gold. He did work on the defense, the defense on paper is far superior than it has ever been under Dan Quinn. I know this is year three, far superior. Um coaching staffs. As I said, I could never tell you if this is a good coach or bad coach. Never would I even imagine trying to do that. I don't know if David Blau is going to be good or bad. I do like the fact that they're not going to be exclusively in shotgun. I do like the fact that they might are not going to be exclusively hurry up. It gives the other players around Jaden time to read defenses, time to make adjustments. That is important, and I think that's a good thing with the David Blau system. Uh we're assuming that the David Blau system is gonna be like Ben Johnson's, and that really helped Caleb Williams. I would say Caleb Wilson. I think the offense is gonna be, I don't know, it's tough to say, but I I think given a choice, I would take a Ben Johnson-style offense over Cliff Kingsbury. I think Cliff Kingsbury's offense is outdated because he was unwilling to make changes. Unwilling to adjust. And the offense itself made it very difficult to adjust to game flow. And there are times when game flow should dictate what you're doing. It shouldn't be, well, I'm gonna throw the ball 50 times and that's it. Not make any changes. And I think uh Ben Johnson style offense definitely leads itself to making changes. On the defensive side, Durante Jones, I don't know. I mean Joey Joe Witt Jr. sounded like the part when you listen to him. He was he sounded like it, and he was awful. Durante Jones sounds the part. Doesn't mean he is. We know he wasn't the first choice. Some of my red flags about Durante Jones is he's been an assistant coach for a very long time. He's never been defensive coordinator. I know he's a defensive coordinator for one year at LSU, okay, but he's never done it, and he's been an assistant coach for so long. You sometimes get into that. I don't there's some fields where if you've been in this position for too long, you can't step up. Uh, the best example I can give you, it's gonna sound kind of esoteric, but it makes sense and I'll explain it. If you're an adjunct professor for like three years, that's too long. You've been an adjunct too long, and you're really not gonna get hired as a professor because inherently somebody is going to view that as a red flag. Like, why are you still an adjunct after all these years? What's wrong with you? And they're not even gonna look at you. I sort of get those vibes with Durante Jones. So it might not be his fault that he's been an assistant for all these years. Sometimes you're just not given the opportunity, or sometimes it's as stupid as what I just said that, oh, you've been an assistant for three years, oh, you've been an adjunct for three years. You can't be a professor now, you can't be a defensive coordinator. So maybe it's that. And so maybe this is the opportunity that was uh not given to him in the past. And so here we are. Like I said, he sounded the part. The the best thing that I liked about what he said was that he is going to look at how all of the players' learning styles are and adjust how they are coached based upon that, which is very important because some people, some players, maybe they need to be yelled at, and that'll help them. Some players don't respond well to being yelled at. Some players are visual learners, some players could be audio learners, and I think that that at least gives me an indication that he's thought about that not every player responds to the same thing, and in order to get the maximum out of every player, you shouldn't try to take somebody who does not handle being yelled at and try to convert them into somebody who can handle being yelled at. Similarly, you don't want to take someone who's a visual learner and make them be an audio learner. It's not gonna work. It's not really, they're too you're too old at this point when you're an NFL player to change learning styles. You know, trying to adjust to something that you you're not capable of. There's no point. You're not you don't want to spend an entire offseason trying to convert an visual learner into an audio learner. That's idiotic. So you want to go to how their learning style is and coach them up that way. Yes, it's more work for Durante Jones, but I think if truly is what he said he's going to do, that could pay off dividends. And that's the one thing when I listened to some of his press conferences. This was an early press conference. I was like, okay, that's smart. That's what you need to do. You can't change these players in terms of their learning styles. That's absolutely stupid. And so I'm glad that at least he had acknowledged that. So I know I'm sort of uh a little dour on the commanders, but I I do think there is some hope that they could be good. I just have this feeling they're not going to be great this year. And I wonder what that means for the uh offseason, but we're not even at training camp yet. So I want to have a little bit of optimism, but I'm being realistic. I don't think they're going to be that great. As I said, 8-9, 10-8, make a run at the uh second wild card. And of course, once you get in, you're in. And all bets are off once you're in. So that's where I feel on the uh on the commanders this year. Obviously, things will change as we get into training camp, as we see how players progress, as the reports come out of them. But uh, yeah, that's that's that's my thoughts on the uh good old commanders. And so the the next thing I want to do a quick discussion on the wizards. Since we are done with uh Summer League, we're we're sort of in a holding pattern. I know some players can get extensions depending on when they've signed or when they were acquired, and that's a big thing with the Wizards. But I just um my hope for the Wizards, I'm I'm more hopeful for the Wizards than I am for the Commanders, just based upon it's a little bit easy to become successful in the NBA, especially when you had the number one overall pick. But watching a number of the summer league games of other players, I feel more and more confident that AJ DeBonsa was the right pick. I watched a lot of the Bulls because, you know, Kayla Wilson, seven three pointers he made in his first game. Oh my god, everybody made the mistake. He's the best player ever. What I take away from that is that Hubert Davis is a terrible coach. That's what I take away from that. Because he didn't take more than seven threes his entire year at Carolina. My takeaway from that is that Hubert Davis was a terrible coach, and that he sort of wanted to show that, hey, I'm a shooting guard type player, I can shoot the ball, because he didn't really do that well after that first game because nobody thought he could shoot the ball as well. I know he's been saying that in interviews, I'm sure he showed that off on it. He looked good, but again, he didn't look like AJ Debonsa. And the reason I'm saying that is what I what I really mean by that is AJ Debonsa was one for eleven from the three-point line. Just terrible. Alright? He's not a good shooter to begin with, but one for eleven is not great. But he still managed to score 20 points every game. At least the two games that he was playing. His ability to get to the basket, his ability to draw fouls, his ability to make free throws, his versatility is all I care about. And if he can work on his jump shot, it's a whole new ball game. So I'm really confident on that. Darren Peterson, I don't know. I he's a shooting guard, he's a 6'4 shooting guard. Great. But he relies on the jump shot. That's it. And so if you can body him, he's not gonna be able to do anything. AJ Dubonsa can get to the basket. Uh Cam Boozer only can rely around the basket. So those things put into mind, I am perfectly happy to say right now the Wizards made the right choice. And they have a glut of young talent also, and that's why I feel good. Will Riley played much better after during the summer league. As the summer league went on, he was a little, it seemed like he was a little skittish, especially his second game. And he was taken out of the game, and when he came back, he really ramped it up. So I'm good about that. Uh, the one thing I will say, buckle up, everybody. He's getting an extension. AD is going to be given an extension by the Washington Wizards. That's just my gut feeling. It's going to be, and they're going to go bonkers the National Sports Press on how stupid the Wizards are, how short-sighted the Wizards are, how idiotic the Wizards are. This is the worst contract in the history of the NBA. Get ready for that. And I don't think they should sign him to a long-term deal, but I understand why they would. It's the same thing with the Trey Young signing. I understand completely why. And it goes back to one thing. Who else is going to sign with the Wizards? What other free agent is going to sign with the Wizards? There is nobody. Nobody out there is signing with us who is a potential great player. They're just not. And so Anthony Davis really only has two options for an extension. And that is to sign with the Wizards or to come out like screaming during the season to demonstrate he's not hurt, he's healthy, and then to be traded. Which isn't as easy because he has a really big contract. Now the Wizards can eat this contract. The Wizards can give him a big contract, and it's not gonna hurt them when it comes to giving players extensions necessarily. So they can fit it in, it won't be a problem. And it won't be a problem because they're not signing any free agents. So it doesn't matter if they don't have cap space next year. It doesn't. Bilal Kulabali, who cares? He's not gonna get a big extension. They'll be able to squeeze it in. Okay? They will be able to make moves. They have too many young players on their roster right now. So somebody's going to be moved, whether it is Bilal Kulabali, whether it is Trey Johnson, Keyshawn George, Will Riley, Vuferchic, Alex Aris. One of those players or two of those players have to go. It's just the way it is. And so they can figure out a way to get around a big signing. I don't think it's a great signing, but if he plays to at least 80% of his potential, they're a playoff team. They can win some games in the playoffs. So, as I said, buckle up. It's probably happening. The other thing I wanted to mention about the uh Trey Young extension, I know everybody's still saying what this is the worst extension in the history of the world because his offense is declining, his defense is terrible. You know, Lou Dort, who's one who's considered one of the top defenders, was traded for three second-round picks. Okay. Lou Dort, considered one of the better defenders in the league, top the one of the top defenders in the league. He doesn't really have an offensive game, which I'll get into that in a second, was traded for three second round picks. He essentially was salary dumped by OKC because they needed to, they didn't really need to, but they were told to get under the apron. And they did. So he was salary dumped, and he is a great defender because he's not a good offensive player. It's meaningless. There are other players who could play to his level defensively. It's fine. It's the offense that matters, not the defense. If you want to make the argument that Trey Johnson is declining offensively, sure, I'll take it. You're probably right. He's getting older. It's gonna happen. But pointing to his lack of defense as a terrible reason is idiotic because Lou Dort was traded for nothing. He was essentially cut, salary dumped. Alright, so that fits into my argument that offense is more important than defense. And I'll point to another thing. Jameer Watkins. I'll point to Jameer Watkins. Jameer Watkins is a great defender. I know he locked down Darren Peterson. You'll come running at me, but he got nine fouls. Yeah, you're right. He did get nine fouls. Because those don't matter. He's not going to play 48 minutes. If he comes in for 15 minutes and locks down the team's best offensive player, even if he commits six fouls, he locks that player down, discombobulates them for five minutes, ruins their offense, that is perfect. You don't need a top five defensive player who can play defense for 48 minutes and not cause fouls. It doesn't work that way. So if you have one or two players that can do that type of defense for 15 to 20 minutes, you're good. That's his role. That's the Lou Dort role. You don't need a starter like Lou Dort. It doesn't work. You need offense. And then you need some rotation guys who know I don't play defense. I'm gonna be not on the team anymore. And that's why I don't care about Trey Young's defensive lack of ability. I don't care. I just need him to be willing. There's other players on the roster who will step up and play lockdown defense for 10 to 15 minutes a night if needed. Alright, so I think Lou Dort is the reason it doesn't matter in terms of defense. Because again, he was salary dumped. Alright, I think that's about I think that's gonna wrap up this episode. Just a quick recap with the Commanders. I'm a little worried about the Commanders going into the season. I'm worried that Adam Peters didn't do enough on the offense. I'm worried that he's relying too much of Jaden Daniels being his the rookie Jaden Daniels. And if you have rookie Jaden Daniels, the offense will hum. But I would rather him hedge and get some bigger targets so that if you have Jaden Daniels, rookie Jaden Daniels with great wide receivers, it's even better than not great wide receivers. You clearly see they made some choices to overspend on defense. A plus on that. They took a horrific defense to an above average defense on paper. We don't know until the season starts, but on paper they're an above-average defense. Above average defense, Jaden Daniels rookie year, that's playoff football. But I just am worried that we're not going to get rookie season Jaden Daniels. If we don't get rookie season Jaden Daniels, who on the offense is capable of stepping up and playing hero ball and winning a few games for them? If any of the players, if Bill does that, if hey, if Terry McLaurin's able to rip off and break some tackles, Chigakonquo, if there's some players that can do that, and that's what we need. We need a couple players to do hero ball a couple times to win some games, and so it's not a purely a Jaden Daniels experience. And then with the Wizards, I feel as if they're going to give Anthony Davis an extension. That's how I feel about it. Great player. I understand why they would do it, so I'd be annoyed with it, but I would understand. Uh AJ DeVanza was the right pick. Uh Trey Young, the extension was fine. His defense is irrelevant. Just look at the fact that Lou Dort was dumped for salary considerations, basically. So, with that being said, hope you have a great rest of your day. Until next time, take care, everybody.
