Welcome back to Only Shans, the podcast proving that the world can absolutely handle more than one Shannon. Men, women, and every Shann in between. I'm your host, Shannon McClatchy, and today we're continuing our mission of talking with incredible humans named Shannon and uncovering the stories, chaos, wisdom, and occasional delusion that make each of us who we are. Now I have to admit, when I first started the podcast, I assumed most of my guests would be women. After all, throughout my life, almost every Shannon I've ever met has been female. I've worked with them, gone to school with them, and probably shared a Starbucks order mix-up with at least a dozen of them. So imagine my surprise when my second guest turned out to be a male Shannon. I immediately felt, wait, they actually exist in the world. It felt a little bit like spotting a unicorn with a LinkedIn profile. Today's guest, Shannon Carter, joining us from Denver, Colorado. Shannon is a former corporate recruiter who spent years helping companies hire top talent before making the leap into career coaching. Today, he helps professionals navigate career transitions, build confidence, and land opportunities that align with their goals. Shannon, welcome to the Shanniverse. As one of the rare male Shannons I've encountered, we're especially happy to have you here. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01I'm excited to be here.
SPEAKER_00And we're excited to have you. Episode two means you're officially part of the Shann Cinematic Universe.
SPEAKER_01No refunds, no returns. I should have had my tenure review the paperwork first.
SPEAKER_00Too late. You're one of us now. A little icebreaker segment. Let's start with something fun. What's the wildest assumption someone has ever made about you just because your name is Shannon?
SPEAKER_01I've lost count of how many people assumed I was a woman before meeting me. There have definitely been some surprise faces walking into meetings.
SPEAKER_00As a fellow Shannon, I completely understand. Did you ever lean into it just for fun?
SPEAKER_01Not intentionally, but I've definitely enjoyed the reactions.
SPEAKER_00Have you met any Shannons in your adult life, or are we still a rare Pokemon?
SPEAKER_01Still pretty rare. Every time I meet another Shannon, there's an instant connection.
SPEAKER_00And do you prefer Shannon, Shannon, or something dramatic like Your Majesty?
SPEAKER_01I'm open to all three, especially Your Majesty.
SPEAKER_00Alright, it's time for shenanigans after dark, the segment where things get bold, spicy, and occasionally questionable. Shannon, I hope you're ready. What's the most chaotically romantic thing you've ever done?
SPEAKER_01Well, I drove eight hours to surprise someone for a weekend trip. It sounded romantic at the time and mildly insane in hindsight.
SPEAKER_00Would you do it again?
SPEAKER_01Maybe, but I definitely would confirm plans next time.
SPEAKER_00Question two. What's a dating or relationship red flag that you ignored more than once? Thinking I can communicate enough for both people. It never works as well as you think it will. What's the pettiest thing you've ever done in a relationship? I removed someone from my fantasy football league. Wow, that's not petty, that's actually personal. What's one thing someone can do that instantly makes you think, oh, I'm in trouble? Make me laugh. Great sense of humor catches me every time. Last question for shenanigans Afterdark. What's your most unhinged? I can't believe I did that moment with someone you liked.
SPEAKER_01I one spent way too much time preparing for what was supposed to be a completely casual coffee table. Years of recruiting diehard.
SPEAKER_00Next up is I shan't tell a lie. Two truths and one lie. Here we go.
SPEAKER_01Alright, here we go. Number one, I've interviewed more than 5,000 candidates. Number two, I once seriously considered becoming a firefighter. And number three, I've never had a bad interview.
SPEAKER_00Hmm, one of those sounds suspicious already. Great, we'll circle back. Now it's time to spill the tea, Shan. Tell us something most people don't know about you. Most people don't know.
SPEAKER_01I was incredibly shy when I was younger. The idea of public speaking terrified me. That's hard to imagine considering what you do. Trust me, it was real. I had to work very hard to become comfortable speaking in front of groups.
SPEAKER_00Why haven't you shared that before?
SPEAKER_01I think people assume confidence always comes naturally. It doesn't. Did it change who you are today? Absolutely. It taught me that confidence is always built through repetition and experience.
SPEAKER_00If someone found that out, would they be shocked?
SPEAKER_01Most would probably say, no way. For listeners who don't know you yet, tell us who you are and what you do. I'm Shannon Carter, a career coach based in Denver, Colorado. Before coaching, I spent years working as a corporate recruiter, helping companies identify, interview, and hire talent. I've always been fascinated by people and career growth. Recruiting gave me a chance to help businesses and job seekers at the same time. Was this always the plan? Not at all. Coaching was an unexpected career chapter.
SPEAKER_00What's the biggest plot twist in your career?
SPEAKER_01Realizing my greatest impact wasn't helping companies fail jobs, it was helping people discover their potential.
SPEAKER_00Going a little deep here in our deep dive segment. What's something about your journey people would never guess just by meeting you?
SPEAKER_01People often think my career path was very intentional and straightforward. The truth is there were a lot of moments where I was figuring things out as I went on. What did it teach you? It taught me that uncertainty doesn't mean failure. How did it change you? It made me more resilient and more willing to take on calculated risks. What advice would you give someone facing something similar? Trust that your career doesn't have to follow a straight line. Some of the best opportunities come from unexpected turns.
SPEAKER_00Lord, you don't need to tell me that. Remember, this is rapid fire, no thinking. First answer, sweet or savory.
SPEAKER_01Savory.
SPEAKER_00Early bird or night owl. Early bird. Dream job as a kid.
SPEAKER_01Professional baseball player.
SPEAKER_00Ooh, we like those baseball players. Sorry, honey. Current favorite TV show. A phrase you overuse. It depends. A habit you're proud of. Reading every day. Something you always keep in your bag. A notebook. A habit you're not checking emails too often. A song that instantly boosts your mood. Don't stop me now. Something you're excited for this year. Growing my coaching practices and helping more people. Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. If listeners remember one thing from this episode, what do you want it to be?
SPEAKER_01It would be don't let fear make decisions for you. Whether it's a career move, a personal goal, or a big life change. You'll usually regret the chances you didn't take more than the ones you did.
SPEAKER_00Love that. Love that.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_00All right. I shan't tell a lie reveal.
SPEAKER_01The lie was number three. I've definitely had bad interviews.
SPEAKER_00Shannon Carter, thank you so much for joining me for episode two of Only Shans. You are officially part of the Shan Legacy.
SPEAKER_01No, thank you, girl. You're something else. I've been following you on Instagram, Facebook, and I know we don't know each other personally, but I am very entertained with your story. You look like you've been living your best life. Oh, and congratulations on your wedding. You could tell you were both genuinely happy.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. We are good. We are still in our little bubble and we're just gonna ride it out. But thank you so much again. I truly appreciate your time, and I can't believe you know you're my second guest, and it's a male. Um you know, it's a Shannon dominating world out there where we'll we'll see who actually dominates. So thanks so much.
SPEAKER_01It was a damn good time, and let me know if you need me to fill in anytime you need me.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. So you'd be willing to come back as a second go-around one time and we'll do a catch-up?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Just let me know when.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. Thank you so much, Shannon, and good luck with your career.
SPEAKER_01I appreciate it. You as well.
SPEAKER_00Thank you for listening to episode two of Only Shans. If you enjoyed today's conversation, subscribe, share the show, and leave a review. If you're a Shannon, know a Shannon, work with a Shannon, or have a Shannon with a great story in your life, I'd love to hear from you. Until next time, remember there may be a lot of Shannons, but every Shann has their own story. I'm Shannon McClatchy, and this is Only Shannon.
