And we said if Caleb throws four touchdowns this weekend, we'll give out free hot dogs. Sure enough, that weekend he threw four touchdowns. You guys started to turn the season around. Although I think you might have gotten injured that week. Yeah, Dallas. Yeah. Was it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

And uh, and so, and then, you know, later in the season when you guys played the Eagles, Coach Johnson took his took his shirt off. So, one of the Bears reporters had said, uh, what about after the KO thing, what about if uh Coach Johnson takes his shirt off? And we said, Well, that's kind of strange, but yeah, would love for more free hot dogs for that. So then sure enough, he did that.

And from from your perspective as a player, were you aware of this whole idea of Ben the coach taking a shirt off? He mentioned it a number of times.

Yeah, yeah. I think I've seen him like heard about it one time, but definitely didn't even think about it until after the fact. And then uh when he did it in a locker room, it was kind of just in the heat of a moment, you know? It was like turn turn everyone up a little bit, and then later you see everyone gets free hot dogs. So it's a win-win.

That's awesome. And those locker room speeches all go viral. Uh, what's it like to be in the locker room when uh after a game, and you have such an amazing season, after a game, everybody's in there, uh coach is giving his speech, and he always just you know he's uh turning up. What's it like to be in that room in that moment as a player?

Yeah, it's special, man. Especially, I mean, you see him during the games, he's just cold as ice, doesn't really have any emotions. And then you see him finally let it out after the game, and so it's it's it's cool to see. Um, but we all feed off of it. I mean, you can tell just seeing the videos, we we're we're behind that guy for sure.

Yeah, I think all y'all be kind of like cutting up though in the in the locker room. I mean, that's you know, that's where y'all relax, you know, you let your balls loose.

You know what I mean? So I got a question. Uh I I know a little bit about your personal story. Uh you're from Idaho. And the thing that jumps out in me, you've been an underdog at different points in your career coming out of high school. Uh, and uh I love it because obviously you've exceeded expectations at every turn. You're a superstar now. And but tell me, talk about your upbringing uh and the this underdog piece, the way that that the role that that's played in your development.

Yeah, uh from Idaho, small town. Uh not many people get recruited out of Idaho for really sports in general. Um had a couple of guys before me that I was able to kind of get some looks from the coaches coming into schools, like uh FCS schools, you know, Idaho State, University of Idaho. Um, but then I had a really good couple seasons, and I went to this one camp in Seattle or like a tryout, and uh that's where I seen uh his name's Brandon Huffman in like 24-7 Sports. They rate, they give you stars, and that was really the biggest thing. I just needed to get on the map. Um, and then once I got three-star or whatever it was, um, still not, you know, not a five-star or nothing, but got got on the map and then got a couple offers, and they started rolling in. Um, Michigan was a no-brainer once I visited. Um loved it. People, Coach Harbaugh, everyone, everyone was fired up about me, and I felt like they needed me, you know. So I was like, all right, this seems like the spot. I didn't really expect to go in and play right away. I was like, this is what I wanted to do, but you know, there was some talent in the room, so I was like, we'll see. I'll play some special teams, get the feet wet, and then you know, do what I gotta do. But some things happened, fell into place. All glory to the man up top for sure.

I I think the underdog mindset is I I like having it. You know, I like people not expecting a lot and just kind of coming up out of nowhere, like, you know, this is this is how it is. Yep.

Speaking of, how how old were you when you started like playing football?

Since I could remember.

Yeah, I think we couldn't play, couldn't play third and fourth was flagged, so I went to a different school. Uh Hagerman, it was like 10 10 minutes away from Gooding, so I could play tackle. So you you changed schools to play tackle? Didn't change schools, but played for the other school. Yeah, still went to the school, but yeah, yeah. So you were the trader. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Uh, and so Idaho, I just gotta ask. I've never been. What's the name of your town? Gooding, Idaho. That's good, Idaho. It's like it's clean and pure as it gets.

It is, man. It's beautiful. A lot of people uh are missing out if you haven't been. Now, what do you do on a Friday night in Gooding, Idaho? Friday night, post-game, just gotta win, probably have a like a bonfire or something, go to the shop, uh, drink a couple beers, maybe. I don't know. You know, it's it's pretty uh it's pretty lax. There's only a couple people there. I think it's 3,000 people in the town. So it's everyone knows everyone.

So like when you uh when you sing Let Me Love You by Mario, like in the locker room, is that like a hazing thing for like the rookies? Like it's y'all had to do like it's like a talent show.

Yeah, it's like uh yeah, talent show is what it is. Like the rookies that just came in, they'll have to do it at camp. Uh so it's either sing a song, do a skit, something to entertain and entertain the older guys. Um, and that was like a song I've obviously known for a while. My brother put me on back in the day, so I was like, all right, it's something easy, everyone will know. I can go up there, they'll they might sing along, and uh turned out to be all right.

Oh man, that's a good question. I think uh I'm looking forward to a lot of them. I think Sam, the new tight end who came in, that'll be I mean I'm just interested to see what he'll do. Um, Xavion, though, I think he's gonna come out with some heat, so we'll see.

Well, back to you though. Uh, you clearly practiced this song. Like you killed the performance, it went viral. It was a very big thing. Like, is this did you practice for that moment, or you've just been singing this song forever?

I've been singing it forever. You know, I like to sing in the car, and then uh the main thing is like if you go up there, you can't half-ass it, you know, you gotta go up there and and give it your all, or else they'll boo, they'll throw paper at you, whatever, and then you'll have to do it again or something, you know. So it's like, all right, I'm gonna I'm gonna do this one time and and do it the right way. And uh yeah, I practice a little bit, but like I said, it was just one of those songs you know, you know, everyone knows.

You talk about the national championship in Michigan. Was it you guys expect it going in? Uh, what did it feel like? Coach Harbaugh, anything about that?

Yeah, I think so. Uh the year before I got there, 21, it was the first year they beat Ohio State in a while. So you could see things were kind of the the worm was turning, as Coach Harbaugh would say. And uh got there 22, did it again. I think we won the Big Ten ship. And then the next year we're like had everyone back damn near. So we were like, yeah, this is this is the year for sure. Um then we had you know all the bullshit with the cheating and the couple scandals coming on, which is wasn't true. No, not true, not true at all. You know, we won it fair and square, but uh we'll let the people think what they want to think. But yeah, we had we had a great squad and the camaraderie and everything was there, so we we we we we knew we had a chance for sure.

Uh, how do you like Chicago?

Love it. Love the city. Um a little over a year now, I've been here. Uh, you know, I stay north, so I don't really be in the city a whole lot, but I really like the area. The people are great, food's amazing. Every time I ask someone about a new spot, it's like, man, there's just so much, so much to do here. Um, and the summers are unreal. You like hot dogs? I do like hot dogs. Have you had our hot dogs? Uh uh I haven't had a had a lick here yet. We might have to arrange that.

Yep. So the team had a tough start to the season. You got injured in week three, and then things started to turn for you and for the whole team. Can you talk about the mentality, how you know what it felt like uh when you started to feel that the team was gonna turn things around?

SPEAKER_03 10:49

Yeah, I think early on it was just a lack of detail. And like you watched the tape, it was like just the effort wasn't there as a team, the detail, everything was everything was off. So cut the tape on. We're like, all right, we gotta change some things, practice harder, do things, uh, just turn it in, turn it up a little more. Um, and then like you said, we've kind of fired fired it up uh week three, and then we're kind of just rolling after that. And I think the Raiders game was a big win too. That last minute uh block kick. It's like just that momentum, and you know, knowing that instead of losing those tight games, we were winning them, which is I think uh just shows you how the coaches and how you know how hard we practice and the fourth quarter mentality and uh that underdog mentality we were talking about. Like that's that's really what the we thrive on and what we uh really emphasize when we practice and when we're in the building.

You had a big touchdown in week nine where you bounced off the Bengals defenders. Uh when you caught that ball, did you think you were taking it to the house or no?

Yeah, uh not originally. You know, I'm like, all right, get a completion, get down, kick the field goal, win the game. And then I stayed up and I was like, man, I can't get walked down right now. So just get get in the zone, get in the zone. But uh that was cool. Yeah, that was like a little coming out party, you could say.

And you talk about this like in slow motion, but this all happened in like split seconds, but in your mind, the game slows down. Oh, yeah.

How do it feel? Because like in the beginning, it was like a slow. You know what I mean? I understand what you're saying, like you you the underdog, so I am mend you, you know what I mean? Because you came in, you showed them like I'm here, you know what I mean. But you it started off slow. How do you feel like what people was trying to figure out like why did the bears like really pick you? But I'm so glad that they picked you because now you get to show the ones that doubted you, like, I'm fucking here. Like, this is why they picked me. You know what I mean? Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I'm proud of y'all boys.

Yeah, no, I think uh it was just like it it could be frustrating as frustrating at times, but it was like, you know, as long as we're winning games and I'm doing what I'm asked to do and just trust the process and continue to work, um, my my opportunity is gonna come. Now I gotta I gotta attack that. And that came week nine. And then, you know, uh leading up to I think a couple weeks before that, it was like, okay, here's a third down catch, it's good first down, you know, keep the chains moving, win the game, or whatever. It's like, okay, slowly showing my teammates and my coaches that you know I can I can be trusted in these situations. And then I knew at some point it was gonna be like, all right, here's here's your chance.

So I got a question. You've been in a lot of lots of different locker rooms. You've been in uh good locker rooms, you've been in great locker rooms, you've probably been in bad locker rooms. At what point did the team start to believe this year? Because you know the year before was very different than uh last year. Yeah. Uh what changed and when did people start to believe? Was it the second the coaches changed? This week two, week four, like was there a moment where people really started to believe?

SPEAKER_03 14:14

Yeah, I think it was like I was saying with that Raiders game, like that was like, you know, I wasn't there the year before, obviously, but everyone was like, man, we were losing those games. Like that's how it was, you know, it was a close game, and then we're Chicago would always lose. Yep. So it was like I was saying, just that fourth quarter mentality, like we're gonna play harder, longer, and faster than the other team. And we want it to be that crunch time, you know. We want to have the ball with two minutes left to go win the game, and we really embraced that. And that's you could feel that in the building. And it just I think the first two weeks were you know, new offense, new team, new coaches. Had a lot, a lot going on. We had we just kind of had to figure out what we do right, what we do good, and then kind of work around that.

Uh dating life, man. I got a beautiful, beautiful lady, um, my girlfriend now. Uh I've known her for a while. We met in college. Um, yeah, she's she's she's good to me.

Can you talk about the evolution of your position? The tight end seems to be coming a bigger focal point. The Bears, I think all of us Bears fans were surprised when they took a uh another tight end in the third round, despite having you and Cole Comet. Uh, how is it being utilized with this 12 and 13 personnel we're all reading about?

SPEAKER_03 17:08

Yeah, it's crucial. I mean, you see, it just just creates m different matchups, uh very advantageous for us. And like you can never have too many good tight ends, I feel like. Like it's like I mean, especially obviously depending on the offense you're in, but um most pro-style offenses, you need you're running behind the tight ends. It's essentially a quarterback, just obviously with less stress, and you don't gotta do everything that a quarterback does, but it's it's it's very important and having someone that can do both, you know, and being able to run block, and that opens up the play action. And then, like I said, the mismatches, you got linebackers guarding tight ends who move, you know, almost like receivers. So it's like very advantageous, and you know, we got an amazing room and learn so much from the older guys from Cole, Durham, Steve, all those guys. So uh so the 13 personnel will feature all three of you guys? Uh yeah, yeah. I mean, we do 13. You see it, we do jumbo 23. Like we we like to have the big boys. What should we expect to see from uh Sam, who's from our alma mater? Uh good things for sure. Just seeing how he comes in, has come in and approached the work and uh the meetings. He's super smart, obviously. Um, being a Stanford guy. Um, but no, he's great. He's big as shit, too. Good block. Yeah, oh yeah, good block.

Yeah, they've all been doing good, same thing. Um, just making plays, really putting their head down, working, um, and really, I think understanding what the the the culture is and knowing how to fit in and and and play their role and earn that role. You have any bold predictions for next season? Any hot takes? Well, any hot takes? Uh I don't got anything for you guys, man. I'm gonna keep it.

Yeah, yeah, it's huge. I think uh always have been, but more so like last year college, coming into the league, just uh reading more, um, praying more, going to church, and really uh really diving into it. And I feel like, like you said, with the slow start with injury, um, I really leaned on God and you know, just through prayer, through everything, and and just my mindset was you know, don't worry about it, everything's gonna be okay. And uh, like I said, the opportunity will come. It's too early now, you know, he's saving me from something. Um, but it's been big, and obviously I got a lot more room to grow um in our my relationship with him, but uh big, big man of faith for sure. That's great.

And I'm excited for this year. He's gonna he's gonna tear it up, man. He's I mean, you've been seeing, you've been getting some sneak peeks of the throws he's been making, but he's same old Caleb, man, making crazy plays.
