Teenagers Jesse and Hector look forward to a carefree summer, but the murder of a neighbor leads to a terrifying encounter with the supernatural. After breaking into the neighbor's apartment, Jesse and Hector find a collection of ritualistic art and other bizarre items. Soon after Jesse takes a journal of occult writings, he finds a strange mark on his arm. His subsequent erratic behavior leads Jesse's friends and family to the realization that he is possessed.
How is your weekend? Have you managed to watch anything scary lately? And if so, what was it? As for me, um, I checked out a few movies throughout the week, uh, one of which was Sinister One and Two, and I can see why Sinister One is considered one of the most horror scary movies of all time. Um, not the second one so much as though that doesn't really do it, but it had been a long while since I last watched it, so I didn't really remember a lot of it. So there were moments that did catch me off guard. Um, on another note, I actually can't wait for tonight because welcome to Dairy TV series premieres tonight at 9 o'clock on um HBO Max. So I'll let you know my thoughts on that on next week's episode. Moving on to your weekly horror news. This week in horror does not feature many availables. There's not much information floating around at the moment, but I don't know if you saw over on TikTok and Instagram, um, filming has wrapped in Mike Flanagan's Carrie TV series, and it actually will be releasing soon. With that being said, welcome back to Chills Thrills and a podcast, our horror community podcast where we review, discuss, and analyze all things horror. Um, if you're new here, hi, welcome aboard. This week we're moving on to our we're continuing our coverage of the paranormal activity franchise with the next entry, and that is paranormal activity the marked ones. But before we proceed into the behind the scenes, I have to issue you your spoiler warning. If you have not seen this movie, this is where you pause this and go check that out, then come back to join us for the discussion. Some fun facts. Um, this is the first film in the franchise not to feature nights in the title, like you know how it says night one, night two, night three, whatever the date is. This one does not include that at all. This is the first film in the franchise that was set in a Latino community and incorporate elements of Mexican American culture. A vintage Simon game is used in place of the traditional Ouija board for a supernatural um tool. The film takes place six years after the events of the first film and about six or seven months after the conclusion of the events of Paranormal Activity 4. The marked ones actually had two different um endings. In the franchise documentary, it was revealed that the original ending, which was changed to a new ending in the same house that appeared in the conclusion of Paranormal Activity 3. After surviving the uproar in the house of Lois, Hector, Arturo, and Marasol take Jesse to an abandoned church from where he was supposedly successfully exercised the demon. But then they are attacked by a possessed guard. Minutes later, a police officer arrives there to investigate the disturbances. Jesse suddenly appears with the shotgun and the police shoot him, while the whereabouts of Hector, Marisol, and Arturo are unknown. The film was set to take place in June 2012, but it was also first teased in the post-credit scenes of Paranormal Activity 4, a scene that was only presented in theaters. Though the film is targeted to the Latino market, most of its dialogue is not in Spanish. Christopher Landon, who wrote the screenplay for 2007's Disturbia as well as the three Paranormal Activity sequels, and he was announced to write and direct the project, which has been described as a cousinslash spin-off to the series. And um instead of it being a direct sequel, prequel, or reboot, it was presented as um a spin-off. The film maintains the look of found footage, a style used throughout the entire series. There are nods to previous paranormal activity films, including Allie, Molly E from the Teenage Daughter from the second film. She makes a cameo there. And so does the box of the tapes from Katie and Christy from their childhood. Filming finished in late July after producer Jason Blump confirmed that the film was almost film shooting. The result in the film getting its release date pushed back from October 25th, 2013, to January 3rd, 2014. The studio ran a promotion for users to record their reactions to a video on the site for a chance to win an Xbox One console. Despite predictions suggesting that the Marked Ones would open up at number one in its debut weekend, the film took a close second to Frozen, which was in its seventh week, with a total of 18,343,611 at the North American box office. By the end of its theatrical run, the Marked Ones grossed 32.5 million in North America and 58.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of 90.9 million dollars. Alright, since all of that is out the way, we have a movie to unpack, so let's get into it. Paranormal Activity, the Marked Ones, starts us off at a high school graduation led by a class valedictorian giving his speech as such. But this isn't a time of ending. No, this is a time of new beginnings, a time of transformation, change. I know change isn't always easy, but change is what's going to allow us to grow as individuals and embrace our destiny, to become the persons that we were meant to become. One of my personal favorites, William Arthur Ward, said, It's time for us to embrace the next chapter of our lives. Thank you, 2012. While the valedictorian is giving his speech, we see in white text that says Oxnard, California, June 12, 2012. From the audience, a man whispers to his friend Jesse, played by Andrew Jacobs, who's also graduating. So while joking around in the graduation, they quickly divert their attention back to the graduation. As the graduation ends and everybody cheers, we head outside where Jesse greets his family. Hector, played by Jorge Diaz, this is his best friend. Yvette, played by Naomi Gonzalez, this is Jesse's sister. Caesar Caesar is Jesse's dad, played by David Sarsordo, and as well as his grandma and Grandma Irma, played by Renee Victor. Yvette greets Jesse with a congratulations hug. Jesse jokingly asks what she's wearing, and she just tells him to shut up. A hug from Hector followed by a hug from Grandma Irma, with Jesse saying that she's his number one. Taking family pictures before leaving, in passing, Jesse congratulates the valedictorian from earlier, and this is going to be Oscar, played by Carlos Pratt. As he's leaving with his family, he introduces his mother and his brother Otoro, played by Richard Crubr. Walking away, Hector makes a comment that Oscar that's Oscar's brother. We'll find out why he makes that comment in a little while. Later that evening, Jesse celebrates the graduation with family and friends. As he admires his father's camera, admitting that the camera is nice and asks how much it was, his father answers about $300. Jesse takes the camera for a test drive, asking if he could record or mess around with it, and ensures that he won't drop it. Jesse greets the family dog Chavo and tells him that he graduated. Yvette comments barely. So Jesse responds, Don't hate, appreciate. In a sincere tone, Yvette tells him that seriously, Mom would have been really proud to see him graduate. So we establish that his mother has passed away. Yvette adds that she wishes she could have been there. Jesse thanks her, saying that's like the nicest thing she's ever said, and in a joking manner, she tells him not to get used to it. But she does tell him he got a nice turnout for his party. Jesse's other friend, Marisol, played by Gabrielle Walsh, arrives at the party. Jesse asks where she was, but she reminds him that she told him she couldn't get off work. However, she made him some salsa and congratulates him, asking how it feels. Jesse answers that he feels like a man now. As the crowd cheers, Hector pours Jesse a shot while he takes the camera to record him drinking it, and hevette tells him to chug it. With traditional music playing, Jesse dances with Grandma Irma. An uncredited friend asks about an apartment with newspaper over the windows. Hector answers the the friend, that's weird as Anna's house. Jesse adds that his crazy neighbor lives there and she lives right under him. So in his dad's room, there's a vent that connects to her room, and sometimes in the middle of the night, where it sounds like wailing and moaning comes from her apartment. Hector yells out for Jesse, telling him that they've got to go. Jesse holds up graduation money. We cut to the next day and crawl and across the street we see Hector holding a business size, business sign advertising. Jesse sees this saying, Look at this dumbass, asking what the fuck is he doing while Hector is dancing and flipping the sign. Jesse asks that he would not let Hector work for him. Crossing the street, he tells him that he finally got the camera. In the unrated version, we see Jesse go into um a pawn shop to look at the cameras, and he ends up picking the one that he has now. But originally, the pawn shop owner was asking for a higher price. So after telling the salesman he was just going to go to another pawn shop, the salesman agrees to lower the price. Hector checks out the camera and while checking it out, he ends up recording Otoro, who's the head of a gang. Artoro seen sees this and sends over one of his members after pointing them out. The man questions, asking what the fuck they're doing, and as he approaches them along with two other members, Hector knows he's fucked up, saying, Oh shit. Jesse answers that they aren't doing anything, but one of the members responds, What do you mean? Nothing, you got a fucking camera. Jesse tells him that it's not even recording, and one of the members named Santo, played by Juan Vasquez, he calls bullshit and that it's not on, but demands Jesse gives him the camera. But then Jesse and Hector take off running with the gang members giving chase but can't catch them. Hector is wearing a shirt that says, I just look illegal. Not that it matters. I I honestly just thought it was funny when I actually look at at his uh shirt. In the next scene, we see a laundry basket with a GoPro mounted to it, as Hector immediately tells Jesse that he's not getting in that shit. But then the next scene, he's in it. Jesse tells him to go for it, and Hector tells him to shut up and get his ass up here then. He responds, Fuck no, he's not going up there. Hector is the comic relief for this movie. He tells he he tells Jesse that he doesn't even got insurance, but Jesse tells him stop being a pussy. After counting down, Hector takes the ride down the stairs only to flip over at the bottom. Jesse in disbelief tells him that he can't believe that he actually went through with it. Hector responds for him to get his ass up there and do it himself. Jesse tells him that he's not the stupid one and highlights just how high up on the stairs that he was. Hector responds that that's not cool, and he always makes him do dumb shit. In the background, arguing can be heard that catches their attention coming from Anna's apartment, and in doing so, Oscar walks out. Jesse tries asking him what he's doing there, but Oscar just ignores him and continues walking. Hector asks Jesse if that's the dude from his school, Arturo's brother, so Jesse wonders what he was doing in there. Jesse pans the camera back to see Anna standing there in her doorway. Jesse submits that the lady is fucking weird, but he doesn't know what Oscar was doing there, and Hector questions how he even knows Anna. In the next scene, we see Grandma Irma cooking, and Hector offers her some tequila, and at first she's hesitant. Then as Hector encourages her, he starts praying the shot, and Jesse tells him only half, but she wants more than that. She pours a full shot and takes it to the head and cheerfully shouts. Afterwards, Hector goes for round two, but Grandma Irma is tapped out and she's now singing in Spanish. It is soon interrupted by noises heard from Anna's apartment. Jesse goes into his father's room and goes to the air vent to listen. Hector and Jesse listen as Moni is heard, but then a woman screams. Jesse asks, What the fuck was that? Hector answers that he doesn't know, but it didn't sound good. Jesse says that he wishes that they could see down there, and Hector has an idea and tells Jesse to get his GoPro and they'll just tie it down and they can slide it down the vent. Hector finds a rope and a head of me cable, and Jesse looks confused and tells him that it's HDMI fool, not hit of me. He sends it down the air vent while Hector watches on the TV. Finally they are able to see through the vent and they can see a naked woman standing there. Hector excitedly tells Jesse that there's a naked girl repeatedly, and it's clearly a mannequin. He just can't tell even though it's just standing there with no movement. He tells Jesse to stay right there and turns to TV so he can see. Hector tells him don't move, it's the best day of his life, so he should stay fucking right there. As he moves to TV, Grandma Irma walks in, completely loses her shit. And I wish I understood Spanish so I would know like what she said because she's flipping out. Hector tells her that she can do her laundry later and guides her out of the room. Jesse tells him to lock the door, calling him an idiot. Hector returns to the TV, commenting that she's just standing there. Jesse asks if she looks good, so he answers, Hell yeah, she looks good. Suddenly, a very naked Anna enters the frame. Completely grossed out, he tells Jesse that Anna is naked and that he just lost his boner, his dick is soft like forever. But he questions what she's doing. She's fingerprint painting, finger painting a red circle on the girl's stomach. Out of nowhere, Jesse drops the GoPro and it catches Anna's attention. Hector tells Jesse to pull it up, don't say nothing, just to pull it up. Meanwhile, the GoPro is just banging against the vent as it goes up, making it very obvious that they were spying. If anything, she should have just you know he should have just pulled it up slowly. Jesse tells him that that was pretty fucking funny, but Hector is not amused, so he responds that maybe Grandma is right, maybe that bitch is a Bruhaw, aka Witch. And the next scene, Hector and Jesse are playing with Chavo, the dog, while mimicking music playing in a laundry room. Marisol stops by to do her laundry. As they explain what Anna was doing, Jesse tells her that she was drawing some symbol on a girl, possibly with blood. It was some red shit, they just don't know what it was, and that it looked like a ritual. Hector suggests that she was probably a pimp, like running a whorehouse. Jesse questions how she's gonna run a whorehouse. What about the one girl that was nine months pregnant and about to pop? Hector responds, eventually you work at a whorehouse, you're gonna get pregnant. Jesse comments that everybody around the neighborhood thinks that she's some Bruha or witch or whatever, and he believes it now. Hector tells Jesse to tell Mirisol about Oscar. Mirisol questions how he knows Anna, but Jesse doesn't know, and that's what's weird to him. In the next scene, Jesse bribes one of the neighborhood kids to bang on Anna's door. The kid starts banging on the door, calling her a brouha, while Hector and Jesse laugh. But out of nowhere, Anna appears behind them yelling at them in Spanish. The little boy takes off running, and Anna hits them with her bag that she's carrying and telling Jesse that he doesn't know what's going to happen to him, and they just continue to laugh at her. Later that night, we see Jesse and Hector walking down the stairs. Jesse asks Hector about the firecracker, and he answers that he gets them from his uncle when he goes to Mexico. He gets them in TJ. Jesse tells him that the shit looks dope. Out back, Hector tries lighting it, but is unsuccessful. But he finally does get it lit and he backs away in anticipation, but it doesn't go off. Hesitantly, Hector goes to relight it, and Jesse yells boom, which scares the shit out of him. He immediately yells, What the fuck? Don't do that shit. It's just not funny. What if that shit would have? And then suddenly he's cut off when Oscar jumps on the dumpster behind him and takes off running and the firecracker explodes, going off. In a moment of chaos, police cars go speeding in the direction that Oscar ran, along with assistance from a police chopper up above. The entire community is flooded with police cars. Officers urge the residents to go back inside. Hector asks if someone dabbed but receives no answer. Police continue canvassing the area where Oscar jumped from, and they realize that he jumped from Anna's apartment. Shortly afterwards, they see police carrying Anna's body out, and Jesse comments that that's so messed up he can't believe that's Anna. We cut to the next day as Mirasol questions if they caught him while looking at an article online that reads suspected gunman at large. My question is, when did he shoot her? We never heard a gunshot, and you can't say during the firecracker's explosion because Oscar had already jumped out the window at that point. So I feel like they should have, if anything, they should have made it like he stabbed her to death because we didn't hear a gunshot like at all, and they've been out there the entire time. So it's kind of just like they should have chosen something else. Jesse answered he guesses not, but doesn't get why Oscar would kill her. He just graduated Valedictorian, and Marisol asks if they spoke to the police, and they both answer no. Jesse adds, why would they talk to the police? And plus his brother is the main head of 805, and he's not messing with that gang stuff. Hector quotes what we already know. Snitches get stitches. Jesse adds that he doesn't even think Oscar knew that the camera was there. That's how fast it was. Mirisol comments that they don't know that and they better erase it. They saw him coming out of her apartment. Jesse tells her to stop tripping, and Oscar didn't even see the camera. Hector even chimes in that they're not going to be showing people. Marisol replies that they better hope that she's tripping. Girl, shut up. You're doing too much. We cut to later that night. Jesse and Hector are smark smoking the devil's lettuce, some good old Mary Jane. Hector is being paranoid, panicking, telling Jesse to blow that shit out and then spraying air freshener. Jesse, like my guy, blowing that out the window is not going to do a damn thing. You got to get a fan, you gotta cover your event, you gotta cover the bottom of the door, and then you gotta put a fan in a window backwards so it pulls the air and pushes it outside. That right there is uh rookie smokers. Hector tells Jesse that it's crazy someone died right underneath him. Jesse's high ass tells Hector, Anna probably sleeps right under him, so they're bonded. And a quick cut now, Hector is smoking out of the bong bong and a Jamaican accent. He says Blaze won for the nation. He quickly reverts back to his accent, saying that he's still tripping about Oscar. Jesse agrees, and Hector questions whatever the hell was going on down there he wishes he knew. She was probably doing weird shit down there, so Jesse has an idea and wants to go check it out because he thinks they can find clues. Hector responds, What do you think you are? Sherlock Holmes? He repeats it again. Sherlock Holmes. We cut to them trying to get into Anna's apartment through the front door, but it's locked. For whatever reason, the police tape is still up, even though it's like been a few days. Like, does it stay up that long? I mean, I honestly don't know. Heading out back, they find a ladder, and Jesse climbs up to discover that one of the windows is unlocked. Looking around, Hector comments that it looks nasty. They discover the fridge is locked and questions why. Jesse points that out that he doesn't know, but whatever's in there stinks. While Hector is looking at trinkets, Jesse manages to go hide. As Hector calls out to Jesse, but he receives no answer. Continuing to search the apartment, he walks towards a walkway that has beads hanging down and it's moving. So he continues calling out for him. Suddenly Jesse jumps out at him, scaring the shit out of him, and Hector is pissed. I mean, Jesse, he typical best friend behavior, like it's fucking with each other. Just Jesse just keeps scaring him. So I mean he should be used to it, but you know, whatever. They go into one room with the crib, so Hector questions it, but Jesse doesn't have the answer because it's set up like a nursery. Over on the table, Jesse find finds surgical tools. They continue searching, and in a closet, they find the box of tapes. One of the boxes is labeled Katie and Christy 1988. So we know the events of Paranormal Activity 3 occurred in 1988. Those are the tapes that went missing from Paranormal Activity 2. And this is seven months after the events of Paranormal Activity 4. Anyway, they move into Anna's room and there's blood everywhere. Jesse finds a journal, but Hector wants them to get out of there. And when they turn around to leave, Arturo is standing there right behind him. Arturo questions why they're there, and if they heard that what shit that he did talking about Oscar that wasn't his little brother. What about that bitch that used to stay here and asking if they know about her? Hector answers they did they don't know shit, and Arturo tells them to get the fuck out of there. So, like, was Arturo there the whole time? Did he just get there? Like, if he was there the whole time, well, he was just sitting in the dark, or I mean it's possible that he just got there. There, but we didn't hear a door, window, or nothing open, so you know who knows. We cut to the next morning. Hector walks in Jesse's room while he sleep and he grabs a marker and draws a dick and some balls on his face. Hector wakes him up telling him that it's noon and it's time to show the world his face and to get his lazy ass up. Jesse tells him that he had the craziest dream. He was at some farm with all these women. And Hector responds, sounds like a good dream to him, but Jesse cancels that by responding, no, they were old. Like real old. A little foreshadowing there. When Jesse gets out of bed, Hector notices blood on his sheets, asking if he's bleeding or if he got his period. Jesse shows him a bite on his arm, and Hector asks if he bit himself, and Jesse quickly answers, Why the fuck would he bite himself? Okay, so there's that that right there, I think it's like a repeated pattern, maybe a trend. I don't know. Each person that got bit eventually became possessed. Katie got bit on her back, she became possessed. Chrissy got bit on her leg, and she got possessed, so now Jesse's been beat been bit. So I guess we'll see where that goes. A moment later in the kitchen, Jesse is making a ball of cereal, and Chavo must send something because he's standing and growling at him. Even Hector asks, What's wrong with Chavo? Telling Jesse that Chavo don't like him no more. Jesse walks over to pet him and Chavo takes off running. While Jesse eats, Hector tells him that they're hanging at his job if he wants to apply. But Jesse responds that he's not gonna flip signs like him. Hector questions why not? Because it takes skill. He's been practicing this whole time. Yvette walks in and as she's opening the fridge, she chuckles, but Jesse doesn't know why. He thinks she's just laughing because of the way he's eating his cereal. Yvette tells him that he has a dick on his face, still laughing, while Hector laughs too. She repeats that he has a dick on his cheek. Jesse gets up to go check. Hector asks Yvette if she saw how he drew the pubes, and she answers that he's nasty. And in the background, Jesse shouts out that Hector's an asshole. In the next scene, Jesse is flipping through the pages of the journal that he stole from Anna's apartment. Mirasol comments that she can't believe that they stole the journal from her house. Through him flipping through the pages, if you look closely, there's a picture of Dennis, and then there's another picture of Dennis, Julie, Katie, and Christy, and then there's a picture of Allie Ray from Paranormal Activity 2, duh. And a picture of a door, like an illustration that's been drawn. Jesse explains that in the journal, it's basically saying that if you built this door, it's like you could travel through time. Hector questions if she could travel through time. Why the hell was he staying here in this shitty ass apartment? He would have time portal his ass to the Bahamas. Jesse further explains that it says Destinos Profanos, meaning you can only go to unholy places through this door. More foreshadowing. Hector asks what's an unholy place, but Jesse doesn't know. Hector adds that he's trying to get up in Marisol's friend Espie's unholy place. And Marisol tells him that he's Nancy, but Jesse tells him that that's Marisol's cousin. Marisol holds up a picture in the journal that looks like some medieval type looking shit. A page falls out and Jesse picks it up saying that it's a map. Hector points out what Anna was painting on the naked chick is the triangle with the circle in it. When I first saw this movie, I was wondering if like, you know, that or anything else from the previous entries were like actually gonna show up, but then you know I had to remember that all the films are connected. So essentially, parts of the previous entries always end up in the next entry. Looking at the picture, Mirisol comments that it's possible that the ritual she was doing, she adds incubo. So Hector asks what that means, and Jesse adds her that it's like a demon. In the next scene, Jesse, Hector, and Mirisol are messing around with the game Simon. Jesse comments to them, watch the pro do it. As he tries to get it started, but it won't do anything. So he asks if it's going to do anything at all, and the green button lights up. Jesse tries to get it to work, but again, it's not lighting up. Jesse comments that the game thought Hector was stupid and that's why it stopped working. Jesse asks Simon if he thinks Hector is stupid and the green light flashes. Jesse asks in third person, is Jesse handsome, it flashes green again. Mirasol tells Jesse to ask it something that he knows it'll say no to and it'll see if it can only flash green. So he asks if Hector is black and it flashes red. So now he asks Simon, guessing the playing cards in his hand, asking if he's holding the ace of hearts, green light flashes. Grandma Irma walks over and Jesse asks a question in Spanish, and whatever he asks, it flashes green. Grandma Irma isn't impressed, instead, she responds in Spanish and takes su takes Simon from them. Hector asks why is she tripping, and Jesse answers that she thinks it's bad. We cut to the next day, we see Hector and Jesse riding a bike to go play basketball. On the court, Hector goes to shoot the ball and misses, so he comments, see how his knees locked up. Jesse tells him to stop making excuses, but Hector responds that his shit locks up. It affects his jump shot. It's like a whole flow. In a quick cut, Jesse asks, How does it feel losing again? Hector tells him to shut up. He's just tired because he hasn't eaten since lunchtime, and it's not even fair because Jesse knows that he has scoliosis. Jesse just laughs at him. Now at the vending machine, as Jesse is looking for change, Hector points out two sketchy men walking towards them. The men asks them if they want to run two on two, but Jesse tells them that they're just leaving. One of the men asks, What does Jesse have in his backpack? Jesse tells them that he doesn't have anything. Hector tells them to just chill, so the man asks to check the backpack, but Jesse tells him to leave them alone. In frustration, one of the men gets physical trying to take the backpack and they start jumping Jesse, punching and kicking him. Suddenly, Jesse hits one of them, throwing them into the vending machine, and the other gets hit and flies onto a table a distance away. Hector helps Jesse up and they run away from them as they're unconscious, but Jesse is confused. The next day, Jesse, Hector, and Mirisol are watching the footage from the fight, and Mirisol questions how the hell did he do that? And Jesse answers that he doesn't know. He barely even touched them, and Hector responds, What are you talking about? They flew through the air. It wasn't even a knockout, they fucking flew. But Jesse admits that he just doesn't remember. We cut to later that night. Jesse is using Simon again to answer a few questions. He asks if anybody's there, and after a brief moment, the green button finally lights up. Jesse asks if he messed those guys up at the park and the green lights pop up again. Asking the next question if it's his guardian angel, but this time the red button flashes. He asks, Are you good? and receives no answer, so he repeats it again and still no response. In the next scene, Jesse races to grab the camera and hand it over to Hector to show him a trick. Jesse gets into position and falls backwards, but when he does, something catches him and stands him back up. Hector in amazement comments, What the fuck? He tells him to do it again, and he does and gets the same result. The boys are hyped at this moment, so Jesse grabs a chair from the dining room table, and Hector asks him if he's sure he wants to do that, and Jesse gives it a try and is successful again. Now Hector feels that it's his turn and he stands on the chair, and when he falls backwards, nothing catches him. He he just slams on the floor and he's laying in pain. But shortly after, now outside, Jesse is on a skateboard and jumps high in the air and then comes down on the rail, grinding the handrail. So now Jesse decides to try something else. He blows up an air mattress and does it in one breath. Then he does it again with Hector laying on it. Shortly after they're checking checking the comments on YouTube after uploading the footage, Hector comments that they got almost 400 views. Hector continues reading, oh, so fake. Wow, this looks totally real. Good job, dude. What effects program do you use? Hector gets mad saying that all all the people who leave comment leave negative comments are always so negative. Jesse reads this reads this comment that says this is just an illusion by someone obviously seeking attention. Hector responds that this is stupid. They just sit in their basements jacking off to R. Kelly videos all day. Jesse tells Hector that he feels like right now, if he wants to do something, he can do it. A moment later, we see Hector and Jesse in Hector's car. Jesse questions why he has a bat in the back seat, and Hector answers him that in this area you never know. And then he reminds him about the time of the crazy ass bum at the gas station. While driving through a neighborhood, Jesse points out a party and they just casually stroll up. Even Hector tells him you can't just walk him in somebody's party, but they do anyway. Hector comments that he's serious. Some of these fools look like criminals, and one of the party girls hears him and calls him out. He goes, What? And Hector quickly tells him, Not you. Jesse points out a couple of girls, and Hector tells him, one of the girls has a Kim Dark Kim Kardashian ass. Jesse then asks one of the girls for a kiss on his cheek because he made a bet with his friend. So she repeats a kiss on the cheek, and right when she's about to kiss his cheek, he turns his head for a kiss on the lips. So of course, Hector asks for a kiss on the cheek, but the thing is his cheek is right above his testicles. In the next shot, Jesse is chugging some alcohol, and one of the girls tells him to save some for her. They parted for a little while longer, dancing and just chilling, and then we cut to them arriving to Jesse's building, looking for a place to chill, but when they get to Jesse's, we see Grandma Irma asleep in the chair, so he asks Hector if they could go to his house, and Hector responds, Hell no, there's like 50 people that live up in there. But then Jesse gets an idea and he tells Hector to take the girls to the courtyard. And as they wait, Jesse opens the door of Anna's apartment. One of the girls asks if they're sure that they can be in there, and Hector answers that they're good. The lady moved out. Hector tells them that the lady that used to live here actually got murdered. Jesse pulls Hector to the side and tells him that he wants to take Penelope, one of the girls' names, and he wants to do his thing. Hector questions what is he gonna do with the other one? The other one isn't into him, but Jesse responds that she is at the party. She kept staring at him. He swears to Hector, and Hector responds that it looked like she just wanted to get away from him. Jesse asks for him to just do him a favor and take the girl somewhere. Hector tries to make himself look better by changing his shirt, and Jesse tells the other girl that Hector's just getting trying to look sexy for her, and she just laughs. In the back room, Jesse and Penelope start making out and she asks if he has a condom, but he doesn't, but he has one upstairs, so he leaves to go get it. While she's waiting for him, she hears noises repeatedly, so she crawls to where the noise is coming from and she discovers a trapdoor. She opens the trap door and leans over it to see if there's any more noise, but suddenly a hand reaches up from the trapdoor and grabs her head. She manages to fight it off, and the hand lets her go. And of course, she gets up and she runs out of the apartment screaming. His eyes are blacked out. So obviously he's he's possessed at this point. Jesse rushes inside, but he's not there, and he starts searching the apartment. He checks the bathroom and notices the shower curting is moving. So when he opens it, there's nothing there. But as soon as he turns around, Oscar is standing right there. Oscar tells him that she put it inside him. That's why he killed Anna. She changed him. He questions Jesse, asking if it's inside him too, because he has the same mark as Oscar. And Oscar shows him the bite mark. There's something under his skin, and he adds, the only way to stop it is to kill yourself. He instructs Jesse to kill himself before he hurts someone. Suddenly Oscar hears somebody calling out to Jesse and he runs out of the out of the bathroom and flees the apartment, but it was Grandma Irma that was calling for him. She shouts to him that he is here. Oscar is here. Jesse runs after Oscar and Hector asks what's going on. Jesse asks where the girls are and to call 911. Jesse runs down the street but loses Oscar. Hector runs after Jesse asking what's going on. So Jesse answers that he was in Anna's apartment, but Hector doesn't know who he's talking about. So he asks who and Jesse answers Oscar. Hector says, Who? And as soon as he says Oscar, he falls from the sky and lands on a car. So obviously, Oscar climbed up on the roof. Um is a it's a church that they're in front of, but he climbs on the roof of the church and he just jumped. Hector and Jesse both take off running. The next day, Hector and Mirisol watches the footage, and Hector points out Oscar's eyes, saying that they look cracked out, adding that he died last night and it got killed in there. He's not going to go down there anymore. Jesse tells him that Oscar had the same mark as he does, and he said whatever it happened to him is happening to me. In the next scene, they open the trapdoor and go down to check it out. Once down there, there's plastic hanging everywhere, and towards the back, they discover what looks to be a makeshift altar. Mirisol finds a picture of Jesse. Jesse questions what the fuck is a picture of him doing down there, but then he finds a picture of him as a baby. He comments that his dad has been looking all over the place for that picture. Picking up a picture of his mother when she was pregnant with him, another woman on the picture is Anna, but then there's another woman in the picture. So Mirisol flips the picture over to reveal who the other woman is, and it's fucking Grandma Lois. Yes, Grandma Lois from Paranormal Activity 3. The picture is dated November 3rd, 1994. So we know this picture is six years after the events of Paranormal Activity 3. So now it makes me wonder if Anna was part of the Coven. Um, because they all heard that she was a witch. So even more now that they found Jesse's pictures drawn or found the pictures down there. Justin Justin. Jesse questions what was his mom doing with Anna. Now I'm wondering that to myself, is it possible that she also was part of the coven too? Or maybe like a victim? Like, I don't know. Mirisol finds a picture of Oscar, and as they pan around the room, there's a lot of symbols, and these symbols are actually real symbols that revolve around rich witchcraft, because I Googled it just out of curiosity. Above them, they hear footsteps and they sit quietly listening so they can climb out. Eventually they peek out the trapdoor and see a woman leaving. Mirsaw asks, What does she look like? And Hector answers that she was dressed in all black. And the next scene, we see Evad holding the same picture, asking Is that Anna with Anna with mom? Jesse answers yes. So she questions where he got the picture, but Jesse responds that it doesn't matter. He wants to know how Anna knew their mother. You know what? We I mean we already know that all six of the paranormal films, well, six out of seven, seven has no connection, but the the first six, they're connected in more ways than than none. But as the movies progress, like the puzzle fits together even more. So Ali Ray was looking into it with Brad, and like we saw her doing the research and paranormal activity too, and she tells him that the host is pregnant, but the baby is marked in utero. And earlier we saw Anna marking the lady with the triangle circle thing. So I'm thinking that's how they're marked before they're born. Um, but also like Robbie drew that same symbol on Wyatt slash Hunter, and that changed him. We were introduced to the symbol back in paranormal activity three. So, like I said, like they are all connected on a like a deeper way. Anyway, Jesse tells her to take off the picture. Mom was pregnant with him. She he continues saying that he heard stuff from people saying that Anna was doing weird witch stuff, like witch rituals on pregnant women. He then questions, how did his mother die? She died having him. So what if Anna did something to his mother and Yvette tells him that he's tripping, asking him if he's serious right now. I mean, he's asking valid questions, like y'all should be asking the same thing. Like the pictures didn't just come out of nowhere. So it's you know, it's sketchy at the least. Jesse's dad comments asking if he hears himself. He's just rambling on. He doesn't sleep, he doesn't eat, he hears him get up in the night and that he's worried about him. Jesse is low-key starting to look like shit. As the movie progresses, he's looking worse and worse and worse. But like, you can see it in his face, and like eventually his personality starts shifting as well. So it's like, you know, he's declining, like, I would say all around, mentally, physically, maybe even emotionally. We cut to later that night, we see Jesse in the bath in the bathroom, and he's checking his face out, and he pulls out like I think it's like a long strand of hair from his eyes. Um, I think that it's gotta be that because it nothing else makes sense. Um once he's done pulling that outhip out of his eyes, the light starts to flicker, and in a quick flash in the mirror, we see a demonic version of himself. He sees it. After a moment, his dad knocks on the door to check on him, and Jesse tells him that he's fine, looking in the mirror again, but asking what the hell is happening to him, and the scene ends. We cut to the next scene. We see Mirasol commenting that Arturo is a serious gangster. What is he gonna be able to do? So Hector answers that he's gotta know something, and eventually Jesse signals for them to come over. Arturo takes them to Oscar's room but tells them not to touch anything when they get in there. He tells them that he noticed Oscar started acting different about a month ago. He got real quiet, he stayed in his room all night, and then he even started acting crazy with their mom, started breaking shit in the house, and then he found in his closet is full of articles and information on the walls. Arturo comments that the last time he saw his brother, he said that there were others like him. He said that they're all marked. He said that their witches were trying to build an army. Mirisol questions an army for what? So she points out the articles that they're all in different languages. Artero continues that the pictures of the little boys from all over the world, all little boys, firstborn boys. He goes on to say that although he's the firstborn, Oscar was adopted. So Jesse asks what happened with his mom, and Arturo answers that she died at birth. So yeah, Oscar's mother, she was either in the coven or selected by them. So, like all these women, it it all leads back to the coven. Arturo asks that his parents adopted Oscar. Hector tells Jesse that it's the same as his mom, but it but Jesse is basically in denial. Mirisol points out a picture of a girl, and when the camera zooms in, it's Ali Ray from the second one. And the newspaper article is the story of the events, like at the end, you know, breaking Daniel's neck and throwing Christy across the room. Um pretty much it just says that, you know, she found her dad and stepmother dead, and Katie and Hunter's whereabouts are unknown, basically. Marisol questions, isn't Carl's bed near them? And Hector answers, yeah, that it's pretty close. She notices Ali Ray's number is pinned to the article. She asks Arturo if Oscar was talking to her and if he knows her, but he doesn't have a clue. Jesse tells them that they've got to go, but Hector asks, What is he doing? They should check it out. Arturo questions that what's wrong with Jesse, and Hector answers that he's just going through a lot right now. Before they leave, Hector takes the paper with Allie's number on it. In the next scene, we see them at a grocery store. Hector asks Jesse what's wrong, and Jesse answers nothing. Hector continues to press the issue until Jesse tells him to back up. He adds Jesse was the one who told him to go to Arturell, so it was his idea. Jesse is quickly distracted when he sees Mirisol talking to a random guy that she knows. He approaches Mirisal and asks if the guy is bothering her, but she answers, no, this is Pablo. He's a friend from high school. Mirisol asks Jesse, what's up? But he stares the guy down. All of them are confused and Pablo asks what his problem is. Mirisol and Hector try to get him to chill out. Jesse comments that, Did you not fucking hear me? He said to get out of there. So Jesse is pretty much starting shit. Eventually the two start shoving each other before Jesse pushes him to the ground. The shopkeeper yells for them to get out, but Jesse asks him, What is he going to do? So the shopkeeper approaches him with the bat. Jesse starts to antagonize the shopkeeper, telling him to hit him. Hit him right here with the bat. Continuing to antagonize the shopkeeper, Jesse pushes him. Then suddenly the shopkeeper swings the bat, but Jesse catches it and rips it from his arm. He eventually chases him with it. The shopkeeper runs behind like this enclosed register area, and Jesse starts slamming the bat on like the glass or the plastic, whatever is hanging up. Mirisol is able to push Jesse towards the exit, and then the scene ends. In the next scene, we see Hector talking to Jesse, telling him that he's been texting him all morning. Mirisol questioned if he's okay, but he answers that he's fine, further commenting, like last night he couldn't control himself, and a lot of the time he feels like he's losing time. He doesn't know what he's doing, and all of the stuff before it was fun. He continues adding that he felt like maybe he was special. But not anymore. A moment later we see them taking Simon the game to the table. Jesse is hesitant and doubtful it'll work, but Mirasol encourages him to try. Sitting at the table, he asks if it's there, but receives no response. So he repeats the question again and no response. Jesse tells them that he told them, so Hector responds, try something else. So Jesse questions if there's something that it wants from him, and after a brief moment, finally the green button lights up. Jesse tells it that he wants it to leave him alone and the red button lights up. He repeats, he said leave him alone, and the red lights up again. So then Jesse shouts to leave him alone. But now this time, when the red button lights up, it's prolonged. Jesse tries cutting it off, but it doesn't work. He ends up taking the batteries out of it so the red light would stop and it does. And the three of them sit looking a bit like startled, concerned, worried, or scared, you know. And the next scene, Jesse is in bed, but hears Chavo barked, so he goes looking for him. It leads him to Anna's apartment, and then it leads to the trapdoor. Chavo is down there and Jesse calls out to him. Chavo's barking is eventually turned into a whimper, forcing Jesse to climb down in search of him. Now that he's down there, Chavo is silent, and as Jesse searches the basement, he moves a plastic in the back and he runs into young Katie and young Christie, just standing there with blacked out eyes. In an attempt to flee the area by running back to climb out, and as he's climbing up the ladder to get out of the trap door, the trapdoor slams down shut on him. He's now banging on the door. He calls out for help, but there's no one around. Suddenly he hears young Katie and Christy laughing, saying that he's ready for you. Jesse's standing there, and on the other side, there's a shadow that's moving. Eventually the shadow charges at him. With each step, a loud thumping is heard while it is shrieking and growling coming towards him, ultimately attacking him. The camera drops to the floor in complete silence, Blair Witch Project style. It's giving Heather Donahue vibes at the end of Blair Witch Project. In the next scene, Hector walks into Jesse's room, noticing something written on the wall. It's Meus Meuse. I don't know. Which we saw this written on the basement door in Paranormal Activity 2. And Mewis is Latin for mine, if you don't remember. Hector hears a thud behind him, so when Hector turns around, he sees Jesse's just standing there in the doorway in the mirror. Hector questions what's wrong with him and what the fuck is on the wall. Jesse sits down and glances at it and returns his eyes back to his phone. Hector asks why he's ignoring him. He's his best friend, and Jesse chuckles, responding that they're not best friends. Jesse demands that Hector give him his camera. Jesse points the camera in Hector's face with him asking what is what is Jesse doing? And to stop, Jesse tells him to say something interesting. Hector responds to get the shit out of his face, and Jesse questions, You don't like it, do you? Then he hands it over to Hector, telling him that he doesn't need it anyway. Maybe that can be his best friend. The following scene, Hector asks Mirisol, What did Jesse tell her when she saw him? And she answers that he didn't say anything. He didn't even act like she was there. He just walked off and left. Hector doesn't know. He just he's he's he's worried about him. We cut to Hector dialing somebody and Mirisol asks who's he who's he calling, and he hands her Allie Ray's number. In a quick cut, Hector and Mirisol are sitting at a park and up walks Allie, played by Molly Everham. From the second one, if you don't remember. If you remember, then you would know that she's the daughter in Paranormal Activity 2. She was the one that found Christy and Daniel's bodies after Katie killed Mika and left with Hunter. Allie hands them a picture with the famous symbol asking if they recognize it, and Mirisol answers, yeah. And it was also in Oscar's bedroom. Allie explains that it's a sign of the midwives. They're a coven, a coven of witches. She then shows them how the symbol the witches use to mark the mark the unborn male in utero, and then they wait for the baby to mature until he's ready to be possessed. So Mirisol questions why now? She continues asking that their friend was marked at birth. Why would the demon come now and try to possess him? So Ali breaks it down answering, she's assuming that he's 18. They both answer, yeah. And so she asks about Oscar, and they say they think so as well. She writes down 666 on uh paper and tells them to add it up. Obviously, it's 18, which the age of the boys. She continues explaining that the transformation is like when you have an infection in your body, so he's fighting it off. They'll perform a final ritual and then he'll go back to normal, but he won't be Jesse anymore. In the next scene, Hector knocks on the door and Grandma Irma lets him in, speaking in Spanish, and you can tell that something's up. He tells her to slow down because he's having trouble understanding her. He walks in Jesse's room and hears him laughing, so when he turns the corner, he sees him looking up at the ceiling to reveal that he's got Chavo suspended in the air up against the ceiling. As Chavo whimpers, Jesse continues laughing while Hector tries to get him to stop. Later that evening, Irma appears at some sort of specialized store with Mirisol and Hector. He asks what Irma is saying, and Mirisol translates that she's talking about Jesse and that he has a bad spirit in him. And she needs his help. So the clerk recommends a cleansing. They follow him to the back in some sort of backroom area. He holds Irma's hands over three eggs and prays over it. Back home, Irma prays and calls for Jesse. When he enters the room, she instructs him to have a seat. While sitting, he stares at Mirisol and Hector. Irma starts her prayer using the eggs, but then suddenly Jesse grabs her hand and squeezes it and like it's not yolk, but it's like black, maybe even blood that runs down her arm. He falls to the ground, shouting in pain, and in pure chaos the lights shut off. It's now pitch black, so Hector switches the camera to night vision and he pans around for a bit, but over in the living room, in the middle of the room, the area begins to warp, but then out of nowhere, the area explodes with Jesse floating in the air and shrieking demonically. The lights come back on and all hell breaks loose. The three of them all run to the back, locking themselves in a room. After a moment of silence, they slowly exit the room to discover Jesse's unconscious body laying on the floor in the living room. So they carry him to bed. The next day we see Irma taking the blanket off of Jesse. Hector questions what happened. He thought it worked. Irma prays over him and leaves to go run a bath for him. Hector hears a thud behind him, so he calls out for Irma but receives no answer. Over his dad's bed, there's a cross on the wall that suddenly falls down. He hears another thud behind him, and when he turns around, Jesse is gone. He's no longer in bed. Hector calls out for both of them and starts to look around. The bathwater is running, so he shuts it off. Heading to the open front door, he goes out to look for them in the courtyard, but when he turns around, Jesse is standing at the top of the stairs and smirks at Hector. Hector looks down at the bottom of the stairs where Irma is laying there, unconscious and in a pool of blood. Hector panics and rushes down there, shouting for anyone to call 911. We cut to Hector, Mirisol, and Yvette. Mirisol asks where did Jesse go? But he doesn't know. He went to call 911 and when he came back, Jesse was gone. He looked everywhere and he's just gone. Yvette tells them that they just moved Irma to ICU, so she's going to go to the hospital to be with her dad. A short while later, Mirisol is on the phone with Allie explaining everything. She points out on the map to show Hector where Allie told her that he was going to be at. It's a house where they do the final ritual. Hector comments that they should call the cops, but Mirisol questions and tell them what. They're just they're not going to believe. Hector responds that they can't just show up at a house. They're going to walk in. These people are dangerous. They kill people. Mirisol defends that they just can't leave him there. They have to go. Hector responds that they're going to go to the hospital and he's going to talk to his dad and tell him everything and show him the footage. A brief moment later, in Hector's car, Mirisal questions if they're going if they're not just going to talk about it, but Hector answers, what is there to talk about? He's going to tell his dad, and Mirisol questions, what is his dad going to do? Hector answers that they don't even know what the fuck they're going to do. Out of nowhere, his car breaks down, and at the end of the street, they see someone standing there, so they ask if that's Jesse. Hector is trying to get this car started, and Mirasol is trying to open the door, but it won't open. Suddenly they see Jesse walking towards them, and as they panic, they look back and Jesse's gone. They start looking around, hearing noises all around them, asking where he went, and out of nowhere, Jesse appears to Hector's driver's side window. He smashes it and pulls him out of the car and starts strangling him until Mirisol runs around and hits Jesse in the back of the head with Hector's back and it knocks him unconscious. Now in the car, Mirosaul panics, telling Hector that Jesse isn't moving. And in the midst of the chaos, they are T-boned out of nowhere. The people in the other car takes Jesse's body and speeds off. Hector and Mirisol rush to Arturo's house for his help and they explain that they took Jesse. And Arturo is confused, asking who took Jesse. Hector points out that it's a bad idea as they're driving. He can't believe that they're doing this. They arrive at the ritual house, pulling guns out of the trunk. Arturo comments, let's go smoke these bitches. The group starts looking around, but the house starts to look a little familiar. Continuing to search, Arturo points out a door telling Santos that it's locked, but he's certain that he can open it. While he's doing that, Arturo, Mirasor, and Hector walk to the other door. If this walkway isn't familiar to you by now, sit tight. You're gonna you we're gonna find out what this house is. They check the other door, but this one is unlocked. The light cuts out, so Hector turns on the light on the camera, and once he does, he's startled by a mannequin head and tells Arturo that there's nothing in here. They continue searching the back and they see like a horse stable area. Arturo looks inside and sees there's food laying there, so they think that there's possibly squatters nearby. Checking the area more, a woman pops up out of nowhere asking for their help, but then a woman charges at them with a knife and Arturo blasts her with his shotgun, sending her flying backwards. Another woman comes at them and receives the same treatment. Arturo tells them to get the fuck out of there and can he continues to shoot. They run toward Santo, but he's already dead. He's been stabbed to death. So then they have to drag him inside, and as they're dragging him inside, these women are walking at them, pursuing them. So Mirasaw is able to shut the door and lock it. Does this house seem recognizable yet? It should be. This is Grandma Lois' house from the third paranormal activity. Searching for a way out, Hector tells Mirasaul to stay where she's at while he checks out a room that has a pentagram on the floor surrounded by lit candles. This is the same room that Christy was looking at the picture, and this is the same room where Dennis saw that symbol on the wall behind the frame of the picture. He returns back to where Mirisol was and she's gone, calling out for her, but she doesn't answer. Somebody whispers Hector right here. He walks towards a window and something smashes it. So he runs to the front door and when he opens it, he only opens it to see that there's a woman dressed in all black standing right there. So he closes it and locks it. He continues calling out to Mirasol. He's walking around and look for her, but then her body drops from above through the glass ceiling. He immediately starts screaming until a woman appears directly right next to him. As he's running, somebody is banging on the door, so he goes and hides in a closet. This is the same exact closet that Dennis and Christie hid in. He holds the door shut because someone's trying to gain entry. He's finally able to leave the closet, and as he looks around, he looks in the room where Dennis died and previously, a white sheet flies at him. Jesse appears out of nowhere and he's fully possessed. He charges at him, forcing him to run up the stairs and then into a room. He locks the door behind him. He looks for a way out of the room, but the windows are all boarded up. There, however, is a door right there in the center of the room with the doorknob in the middle of the door. On the other side of the door, Jesse calls out to Hector, asking him to open up, and Hector tells him to go away and to get the fuck out of there. Jesse pleads that he's scared, so please open the door, and Hector responds, Fuck you, he's not opening the door. That pisses him off because Jesse starts smashing through the door, giving Hector no choice but to use the door. So he goes through the door and his screams and the footage becomes glitchy and muffled. The door takes him to another place that's very familiar. Hector asks where the fuck he is, so as he starts looking around, it reveals to us that he's now at Katie and Mika's house from the very first paranormal activity. He continues looking around until he sees Katie walking down the stairs. He tries getting her attention, but she's catatonic. So while she's in the kitchen, he taps her on her shoulder and she turns around and starts screaming for Mika, who rushes down the stairs and sees Hector and moves to attack him. But then Katie starts stabbing Mika. This this reminds me of the final scene in the first one. We all heard, you know, the screaming and he went down and whatnot and her killing him. We heard it, but we never saw it until now. But remember earlier in the movie, when they were talking, well, they were checking out the journal, and it said that the door will allow you to travel to unholy places. So not only did it do that, it he also went back in time. He went back to October 8th, 2006, which is the night Katie killed Mika. So the opening title card said June, June 12th, 2012, and Mika died October 8th, 2006. So she he went back six years. While Katie is attacking Mika, Hector decides to leave the area and he runs towards the direction of where he came in. But as soon as he turns the corner, he runs into possessed Jesse. The camera drops, complete silence. Katie kneels over the camera and turns it off, and the movie ends. So what were your thoughts on this movie? Where would you rate it? Let me know. Reach out to me and let's see how our thoughts align. Me personally, I think this is the second best entry in the series. The third one obviously being the best to me. And then there's this one. And then I will say paranormal activity too. Um, so yeah, that's it. That is your paranormal activity, the marked ones, the fifth entry.
