Everyone has an opinion on the "right" way to use toilet paper... and somehow it turns into a full-blown debate. This week, Kelly and Zane tackle one of life's most ridiculous questions: Do you hang it over or under? Are you a folder or a scruncher?

What starts as a simple bathroom habit quickly spirals into laughs, questionable logic, random tangents, and the kind of unfiltered conversation you've come to expect from Shit Talk Corner. Along the way, we share stories, challenge each other's opinions, and probably judge you just a little based on your answers.

The original patent illustrations for Seth Wheeler's perforated toilet paper roll depict the paper hanging over the front of the roll. While the patent itself was for the invention of perforated toilet paper, not the preferred hanging orientation, the illustration is the primary reason many people argue that "over" is the original and intended method.

Cottonelle – Over or Under?
Cottonelle reports that approximately 70% of people prefer the "over" orientation. Their research outlines the advantages and disadvantages of both "over" and "under," noting that around 20% of people become annoyed when the toilet paper is hung the "wrong" way. They also found that many people admit to quietly changing the orientation of the roll when visiting someone else's home.

And it seemed like there was, but you could hear every song played by the DJ so loud that all the women were singing at the top of their lungs, and that you could hear it on the highway and on the lake. That's awesome. And they brought they brought it.

Well, I I think it um in IT and also in like graphic design and all that kind of stuff is kind of putting that group out of jobs. And honestly, the more and more I use AI, the more and more I still want to go to a graphic designer and have them help us. But then I'm worried that they're gonna be using AI as well. So yeah, you so we we're gonna talk about this in depth down the road on some other topics, but I I I wanted you to kind of explain to them that that we're a growing show, and with that AI and all this stuff, I want you to tell them what we decided to actually do to make this show happen and work.

I, you know, I look at a computer all day long while I'm at my regular job. And I just I I don't even think I did the research in high school when I needed to. I wish I had chat GTP.

Yeah, we're too old to have the AI back in the day. I mean, we're still trying to figure internet out back then. I'm like, how do I get into typing class now?

So I think what we're what we're gonna do is that we we have great conversations together, and you love doing the research and you want to come up with the topics, and you're thinking about that all the time. And so I said yesterday, what did I say? I said, you take it over.

Well, I was telling you that I think we have a really good topic today, and I cannot wait to start telling it because you're not gonna know the topic. And I think that's the best part. So I get to ask you questions and use you as my model of um the consensus on what certain topics are and what they're not. And I I love creative stuff, so I thought about just doing weird stuff that I love it, our normal day-to-day stuff, and I get to just tell you about it and then ask you the questions and you know put it out there.

So um before we get started here, um back in the day, um, with my nursing friends, this is one of my nurse friends brought this up to us. And I I don't know, remember if it was camping or what, but it's been brought up with them several times. And she wanted to know if you're a water or a folder, and if you are a toilet paper over or under. So I researched it. And um the original patent strongly um favors over.

Not necessarily in my family, but I think I picked it up over the years, like being in the military and stuff. You have to put it like a beard, you know, so it comes down the front, not a mullet, it won't come down the back, you know, like your face and then it's back there.

Well, I got a lot of interesting facts for you on this because there are statistics on this that I want to go over.

So the inventor Seth Wheeler's um 1891 patent for perforated toilet paper shows the loose end coming over the top front of the roll in the patent illustration. Um, the public appears to favor the over. A 2023 Eureka survey poll said that 42,063 votes found that 62.9% chose over and 37.1% chose under. So you are the majority of that. Um, the hygiene argument on this is surprisingly disputed. Some experts argue over is cleaner because the loose hangs away from the wall, reducing the chance that hands or paper contact uh are potentially contaminated um with the wall. So when a person tears the paper, uh it has less contact with the roll itself.

I yeah, it's great facts, right? Other experts counter that this can increase contact with the bathroom wall. Under has one genuinely good practical defense cats and toddlers.

So cats and toddlers are a big thing. If they pod downward at the uh um underhung roll, they're less likely to send the entire roll cascading into the floor.

And I have to stop you right there because this recently happened because we have the new kitten. And I went into my bathroom and I was like, no. So maybe I'll be changing soon, but I doubt it.

Well, uh, I mean, it does say that also it it this is commonly cited. Reason this is a commonly cited reason why people prefer the under one is when they have cats. Um over is easier to find and grab. Um, the loose sheet is visible and farther away from the wall, which again highly explains why many people prefer it. Um, there isn't an official scientific law declaring one orientation correct, but Wheeler's patent drawing is a great evidence of how he envisioned the role being used. But the patent itself is a commandment saying that you shalt hang over, and that is the important distinction. So I got some questions for you, but um obviously we've already found out that you're an over.

Well, it was like this morning. Jimmer left at 4:30 this morning to head back to work and stuff because he stayed an extra night and he has to go back to Butte and then go to wisdom. So it's like two two hours and 30 minutes, but he, you know.

And I took a picture and started laughing when I got up this morning because there was no toilet paper on the roll at all. And I took a picture, and you know what he said to me? Now you know how I feel like and then I was like, no, no, no, no, because last night when we were kind of setting up our new studio, um, your brother emptied the toilet paper roll as well. And so he and I said, no, no, no, we're talking about Kelly's house, and all I wanted to do is wait till the topic this time. Like it all, it all came together. Because I've had, you know, I've had this topic picked over like a week ago. Well, yeah, after the last episode, I was like, I know what the next one's gonna be. And then all this started happening. I'm like, God, this is great universal like information that's coming towards me.

So do you kind of if you're at somebody's house and it's unnerved, you kind of silently like judge them?

Well, some people do. I know. Just to let you know, like it some women have dated some men and called it quits. And some men have dated some women and have they didn't call it quits, but they like judged their character of who they are and what's going on. But um, we I didn't want to get deep into that kind of stuff. Yeah, we don't need to get deep into that. Well, Seth Wheeler patented perforated toilet paper roll in 18 uh 91, and guess which way his drawing shows it is over. So on the patent, it is over. More than 42,000 people were surveyed. 62.9% again said over, and 37.1 said under.

And I I haven't done a whole lot of research on the Spokane ones, except for the fact that I have uh my brother's sister, every a lot of family, a lot of friends over there in that area. And they're evacuated right now. And it is so sad. I was thinking when I first saw that there was some evacuations going on and that it might affect my brother and uh sister. I thought maybe it was at their property that they have more in the mountains area, and it's not. It is their town, yeah. They're they're their house in town. Yeah, and that scares the ever-loving bejesus out of me. Like, I don't understand how this is happening, but I do know that in Washington, especially around Spokane, there's a lot of wooded areas because they want to keep it beautiful like that, and then neighborhoods you know, intertwined. And so I think that that's what's happening.

Subdivisions and different locations and everything around the wooded areas. And I don't know what the update is today. Um, the last time I heard there were over 600 houses and structures gone, but then watching some videos today, I was so heartbroken for these people and these families that I think it's even more than that. I mean, look at California last year. Yeah, it was that last year. Uh look at the year. All the homes and all the things that were wiped out. This is insane.

Just this quick Google search says uh, you know, 65,000 people have been evacuated in Spokane.

Yeah. So you you you've you've it says shows hundreds of burned home burned homes with nearly 65,000 people evacuated. That just hurts my heart so much.

And um where do these people go now? Like if those homes are burnt and gone.

I hope that they get the help and the need, and I'm gonna do whatever I can. Yeah, and there's not much I can do except express the fact that please find the hotlines. We didn't even research this beforehand. We literally talked about this right before we push record. And I think next week we'll try to put in a phone number and a website where you can go help and and do this. But right now, please do your research and go help as much as you can.

And I do know that um so every time I can, I give blood to the Red Cross. And that's something that I do religiously because I want to make sure that if anybody's injured and needs my blood and my plasma, because I I donate that as well.

Um that they have that. So I also know that they have all kinds of resources for people who need places to stay and medical help and whatnot. Um, I know that there are a lot of uh uh facilities out there trying to help these people too. Right. I know right now Jimmer's daughter is staying in wisdom, Montana, because there's a couple of fires up there that she is making sandwiches and great helping out with um getting that the the fireman fed at least, and no structures or anything that I know of yet are affected there, but just that one thing water. Um donate water, donate everything to the fireman. Like let's keep our firefighters safe. Yeah, as Mike is one of them. Yeah, um, let's get these people safe and help out. Let's be kind on this and patient and help.

If you can do something, please do it. Yeah, please do it. You know, every I know that around here when we have firefighter, when we have fires real close, um, our local grocery stores and stuff always have those little cans there. I do know that those things are going to good causes. So if you have a buck or you know, even just your change from paying for your uh groceries or whatever, just throw it in that can. Yeah, it will go somewhere good. Yeah, you know.
