Hey everyone, welcome back to Just Tilly. I'm Tilly.
Sam
And I'm Sam. Time for our weekly check-in. How did everyone do with the stewardship inventory challenge? Did you map out your 10 items?
Tilly
I definitely did. For my challenge, I spent the weekend in my room tidying the whole place up. Mostly because my mom always complains about the state of it. But as I was cleaning, I found a lot of unnecessary things that I already have and don't really need. I was actually recalling the wolf story from episode one as I was cleaning up, and how we need to clearly see what we have. Honestly, before this weekend, my room was not a clear picture at all.
Sam
That is a perfect way to apply it. Cleaning out the clutter literally helps you see your blessings. For my inventory, I went through my video game drawer and realized I had about five games I haven't touched in two years. So I managed them by handing them down to my younger cousin. He was so happy.
Tilly
That is awesome. It felt really good to clear things out and appreciate my room. But I have a confession to make about what happened right after.
Sam
Uh-oh, what did you do?
Tilly
Well, after I finished tidying up, I lay down on my bed and started scrolling on my phone. And within five minutes, all that peaceful contentment completely vanished. I saw this get ready with me video, and this girl had the most perfectly aesthetic, clean room. She was unboxing this massive hall of new skincare and clothes. I started wondering how that girl afforded all that, while I am still stuck with my dog walking job and allowances. I felt depressed. Yes! Suddenly, I looked around my room, which I was just thanking God for ten minutes ago, and I felt like my stuff was cheap and ugly. I literally felt this heavy pull in my chest like, I need to buy what she has so my life can look like that.
Sam
Tilly, what you fell for is something I call the influencer illusion. You have to realize that wasn't just a casual video of a girl sharing her day. It was a highly produced, targeted commercial. And the algorithm fed it to your screen on purpose.
Tilly
Wait, a commercial? She wasn't holding up a product and telling us to go buy it. She was just using her skincare and talking about her weekends.
Sam
That is exactly why it works so well. Brands pay influencers thousands of dollars to make their products look like a natural part of a perfect, enviable lifestyle. They get sent free PR hauls, they use affiliate links, and they place products perfectly in the background. The algorithm knows that if it shows you a traditional, boring commercial, you'll swipe past it. But if it shows you a cool person living a life you wish you had, you will watch the whole thing and crave what they have.
Tilly
Wow. When you break it down like that, it's actually kind of manipulative. It completely took my eyes off my own blessing.
Sam
It's crazy because we think this is a brand new problem caused by smartphones and social media, but it's actually an ancient human problem. It's just happening on a digital screen now. Grab your Bible app and check out 1 John chapter 2, verse 16.
Tilly
Okay, pulling it up right now. In the New Living Translation, here it is. It says, For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
Sam
Look at that phrase. A craving for everything we see. Other translations call it the desires of the eyes. The algorithm is literally engineered to feed the desires of your eyes, making you crave things you didn't even know existed a few minutes ago.
Tilly
That is so true. I didn't care about that specific skincare brand until I saw her using it. My eyes saw it, and suddenly my heart craved it. My eyes saw her whole room, and suddenly I felt stuck and unhappy with my dog walking job.
Sam
Exactly. And that craving instantly steals your peace. You stop being a faithful manager of your own blessings because you're chasing an illusion.
Tilly
Okay, so how do we fight back against the algorithm? Do we throw our phones into the ocean?
Sam
You stop being a passive viewer and you start being a detective. Which brings us perfectly to this week's Just Tilly Challenge.
Tilly
This week's challenge is all about putting your detective hat on. We are calling it ad spotting bingo.
Sam
When you are scrolling this week, we want you to actively look for the hidden commercials. Don't just let the videos wash over your brain. Decode them.
Tilly
Look for the subtle clues. Does the video have a tiny hashtag ad or hashtag partner hidden way down in the caption? Are they offering a specific promo code? Are the brand logos on the skincare bottles facing perfectly toward the camera lens?
Sam
Every time you spot one of these hidden ads, write it down, or keep a running tally in a notebook or on your phone. See how many times someone tried to quietly sell you an aesthetic today.
Tilly
And here is the main part of the challenge. At the end of the week, grab a journal or open a blank note page and write down how this bingo game made you feel. Did exposing those hidden ads change how much you crave those products?
Sam
Exactly. Once you realize that your favorite influencer's perfect lifestyle is actually just a business deal, it completely loses its power over you. The craving disappears and you get your contentment back. You've got this. See you next week, guys.
