And I'm Sam. Okay, first things first. Time for a weekly check-in. How did everyone do with the ad spotting bingo? Did you guys put your detective hats on?
Tilly
Oh, I definitely did. Honestly, it completely ruined my feed. But in a good way. Once I started looking for those tiny little hashtags and perfectly placed brand logos, I realized like 90% of the aesthetic videos I watch are just hidden commercials.
Sam
Right? It completely breaks the influencer illusion. When you know it's a business deal, you stop feeling so much FOMO about your own life. But speaking of FOMO, Tilly, you sound absolutely exhausted today. Are you okay?
Tilly
Sam, I am running on like zero sleep. I made a massive, terrible, epic mistake this week.
Sam
Oh no. Is this about the youth group fundraiser?
Tilly
Ugh, yes. So for everyone listening, last Saturday, our youth group had a planning meeting for a big fundraiser happening this weekend. They needed stuff to sell. My brain immediately went to this TikTok I saw of a girl making these incredibly cute custom tote bags using heat press vinyl. In the video, the process seemed so easy. So I raised my hand and volunteered to make 50 custom bags by Saturday morning.
Sam
Which sounded great in the meeting. But tell them what happened when I walked into your house yesterday.
Tilly
I had a literal mountain of canvas bags covering my living room floor. Sam. I completely rushed the decision. I didn't do any math and I didn't look at my schedule. I spent my entire month's allowance on supplies, assuming I'd just make ten bags a day after school. But I completely forgot to factor in my afternoon dog walking job and a massive math project.
Sam
Plus, that TikTok video was heavily edited.
Tilly
Yeah. There are a lot of processes they cut out. You have to cut the design, peel away the tiny little negative spaces, which is called weeding by the way, and then iron each one perfectly. It takes twenty-five minutes per bag. By Wednesday night, I had only finished 15 bags. I just sat there on the floor staring at the pile of canvas. Have you ever looked at something and thought, there is absolutely no way I'm finishing this?
Sam
Oh yeah. Total overwhelm.
Tilly
I was up until 1 a.m. trying to force it to happen. And then my mom walked into the kitchen, looked at the total chaos, and just quietly said, Tilly? What time is it? I looked at the clock and my stomach just dropped. I realized I was completely out of time. And it got worse. Because of the bags, I completely forgot to do my math homework. I had to stay in during lunch to finish it instead of hanging out with my friends. And Mr. Harrison emailed my parents. It was a total disaster. I committed to something without having any idea what it actually cost. Thank goodness you came over yesterday to help me finish, or I would have failed the youth group.
Sam
You know, it's funny. We are focusing so much on money on this show, but we may need to also include our time and energy. God gave you those resources to steward, just like your allowance. Actually, while we were peeling those bags yesterday, I was thinking about a verse. It was saying something about how haste makes mistakes. Um Ah, wait, let me Google it real quick. Yes, here it is. Proverbs chapter 19, verse 2. Let me read it in the NLT. It says, Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good. Haste makes mistakes.
Tilly
Haste makes mistakes. Wow, that is exactly what happened. I just wanted the VIP feeling of being the one to save the fundraiser, so I jumped. I wasn't trying to impress God. I think I was trying to impress everyone else.
Sam
Right. True wisdom means taking a breath, doing the math, and calculating the actual cost before you give away your resources, whether that's your cash or your Friday night.
Tilly
Wait. You know, the more I think about it, the more I think the 48-hour rule should also apply to our time and energy.
Sam
Oh, how so?
Tilly
Because if I had just used that rule, I wouldn't have said yes so fast. When my youth leader asked for volunteers, instead of raising my hand immediately because I was excited, I could have just said, I have a cool idea for tote bags. Let me figure out the details and get back to you that evening or the following day.
Sam
Yes, exactly. Even if it's not exactly 48 hours, that pause gives you room to breathe and think.
Tilly
It would have given me time to research the cost, watch a real-time tutorial, check my homework schedule, and realize that 50 bags was impossible. I probably would have asked for assistance from the group, or looked for a different item that is way less time consuming, like a cookie sale.
Sam
Right. Which means we need to practice this. You know, Tilly, I'm thinking we bring in the 48-hour pause challenge this week for decision making. What do you think?
Tilly

If someone asks you to take on a new project or commit to a massive favor, do not answer on the spot. Tell them you need to check your schedule. Then open your pause challenge. Under what caught my eye, write down the project or favor. And where it asks how much is it? Write down how many hours it will actually take.
Tilly
And under the Could I Actually Afford It section, ask yourself, do I actually have the free time for this? Will it drain my energy? Is this something God is asking me to do, or am I just caught up in the hype?
Sam
