You Must Be Born Again

Nicodemus shows up with credentials, questions, and a cautious nighttime visit and Jesus answers him with one of the most disruptive lines in all of Scripture: “You must be born again.” We slow down in John 3:1–21 and sit in the tension of that moment, because it exposes a trap that still catches people today. Nicodemus Seeks Answers In Secret

one. Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a ruler of the Jews, and respected religious leader. He came to Jesus by night, perhaps because he feared what others might think, or perhaps because he wanted to a quiet conversation, whatever whatever the reason he came seeking answers. He began by saying, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God. But before Nicodemus could even ask his question, Jesus addressed the greatest need in his life.

Jesus Names The Real Need

Verily, verily I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. What a startling statement. Nicodemus had religion, he had knowledge, he had influence, he had morality, yet Jesus told him that none of those things could take the place of the new birth. The same is true today. Being raised in a Christian home doesn't save us, attending church doesn't save us, knowing Bible stories doesn't save us. Every person must experience the miracle of being born again through faith in Jesus Christ. Nicodemus struggled to understand asking how someone could be born a second time.

The Bronze Serpent Points To Jesus

Then Jesus used the illustration from Israel's story. When poisonous serpents bit the Israelites in the wilderness, God instructed Moses to lift up a brass serpent. Everyone who looked upon it in faith lived. Jesus said, And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up. Jesus was pointing to the cross. Just as those Israelites looked at in faith and lived, we look to Christ, crucified and risen again, and receive eternal life.

Then we arrive at perhaps the best known verse in the Bible, for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Light Versus Darkness And Our Choice

trust him. Finally, Jesus explains why many reject him. And this is the condemnation that light is coming to the world, and men love darkness rather than light. The issue has never been that God failed to provide salvation. The issue is whether people are willing to come into his marvelous light. The question isn't whether you're being religious. The question isn't whether you've attended church. The question isn't whether you've tried to live a good life. The question is this, have you been born again? The new birth is not about turning over a new leaf. It's about receiving a new life through Jesus Christ. If you've already trusted Him, thank God for His amazing grace. If you have never placed your faith in Christ, today is a wonderful day to come to Him.

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so much that you gave your only begotten Son to die for our sins. Thank you for the gift of new life that comes through faith in Jesus Christ.
