Lift Up Your Eyes

You can be doing everything “right” and still miss what Jesus says is right in front of you. Today’s Morning Manna devotional sits in John 4:27–38, right after Jesus meets the Samaritan woman, and it brings one piercing question to the surface: are we more focused on lunch, schedules, and routine than on the souls God places in our path?

We reflect on that easy-to-miss detail that says so much about real transformation: the woman leaves her water pot behind. She came for ordinary water, met Christ, and suddenly the old priority feels small. From there, Jesus explains his own source of strength, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me,” and we talk about why obedience isn’t a burden when you’re centered on God’s will. It becomes joy, purpose, and spiritual nourishment that the world can’t replicate.

Then we slow down at Jesus’ call to evangelism and urgency: “Lift up your eyes and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” We unpack what it means to see the people around us the way Jesus does, and why gospel witness often looks like a long chain of planting, watering, praying, inviting, and encouraging. God brings the increase, and our job is faithfulness.

Welcome And Today’s Passage

Welcome to Morning Manna, where we begin our day by feeding on the bread of life, the Word of God. Thank you for joining me as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John. I am your host, Pastor Woody Posey. Today's passage is John four, twenty seven through thirty eight, where Jesus teaches his disciples one of the greatest lessons on evangelism and the urgency of reaching lost souls.

Opening Prayer For Compassion

Let's begin with prayer. Heavenly Father, thank you for another opportunity to study your word. Open our hearts today to hear what you have to say. Help us to see the fields around us as you see them. Give us a burden for the lost and the willingness to labor in your harvest. We ask these things in Jesus' name, amen.

The Water Pot Left Behind

Our passage begins with the disciples returning from the city. They were surprised to find Jesus talking with the Samaritan woman, but they were respectful enough not to question him. Meanwhile the woman left her water pot and hurried back into the city to tell others about Jesus. That little detail is easy to overlook. She came looking for water, but after meeting Christ, she forgot about the water pot. When someone truly encounters Jesus, priorities begin to change. The things that once seemed most important suddenly become secondary because they have found something infinitely greater.

Spiritual Hunger And Obedience

As the disciples urged Jesus to eat, he responded with words they didn't understand. I have meat to eat that you know not what of. They wondered if someone had already brought him food. But Jesus wasn't speaking about the physical nourishment. He explained in verse 34, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his work. Jesus found satisfaction in obeying the Father. There is a lesson here for every believer. Nothing brings greater joy than living in a center of God's will. The world tells us happiness comes through comfort, possessions, or success. Jesus teaches that true fulfillment comes through obedience. When we serve God, we discover a satisfaction that nothing else can provide.

Lift Up Your Eyes To Harvest

Then Jesus made the powerful statement. Say not ye, there are yet four months, and then cometh harvest. Behold, I say unto you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest. While the disciples were focused on lunch, Jesus was focused on lost people. As they looked toward the nearby town, they may have seen the Samaritans coming across the fields after hearing the woman's testimony. Jesus wanted his disciples to see what he saw. He saw souls, he saw opportunity, he saw a harvest. The same challenge comes to us today. It is easy to become distracted by our daily routines, our schedules, our own concerns. But Jesus says, Lift up your eyes. Look beyond yourself, look beyond your problems, see the people around you who need the Savior. The harvest is still ready.

Planting Watering And Reaping Together

Jesus continued by saying, He that reapeth receiveth wages and gathereth fruit unto life eternal. There is no greater work than helping someone come to know Christ. Not everyone plants, not everyone waters, some are privileged to reap the harvest, but every believer has a role in God's kingdom. Some pray, some invite, some teach, some preach, some encourage. Together we labor for the glory of God. Paul would later write, I have planted, apolos watered, but God gave the increase. Our responsibility is faithfulness. God is responsible for the results. Jesus reminded his disciples that many had already labored before them. The prophets had pointed people toward the coming Messiah. John the Baptist had prepared the way. Now the disciples would enter into that work. The same is true today. Many people have prayed for our family members. Someone may have planted a seed years ago. Another believer may have watered the seed through kindness or faithful witness. Then one day someone has the privilege of seeing that person trust Christ. Every part of the process matters. Never underestimate what God can do through one conversation, one invitation, or one act of

Four Takeaways For Daily Witness

love. What can we learn from this passage? First, we truly meet Jesus. Our priorities change. Like the Samaritan woman, we become more concerned about sharing Christ than holding on to the things of this world. Second, the greatest satisfaction comes from doing God's will. Obedience always brings greater joy than self-centered living. Third, we must lift up our eyes. Every day we encounter people who need hope, forgiveness, and eternal life. Ask God to help you see them as He does. Finally, don't become discouraged if you don't immediately see results. Keep praying, keep planning, keep watering. God is faithful to bring the harvest to his perfect time.

Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding us that the harvest is ready. Forgive us for the times that we become so focused on ourselves that we fail to see the people around us who need Jesus. Open our eyes today. Give us compassion for the lost, encourage to share the gospel, help us to find our greatest joy in doing your will and to be faithful laborers in your harvest field.
