Trusting Jesus In The Storm

We walk through John 6:16-71, from Jesus meeting the disciples in a storm to Jesus testing the loyalty of those who claim to follow him. I pray with you for stronger faith, then press the question that decides discipleship: will we cling to Christ when his words confront our comfort.

Welcome And Passage Overview
SPEAKER_00to Morning Manna, where we begin each day by feeding on the eternal word of God. Thank you for joining me as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John. I am Pastor Woody Posey. Today's passage is John six verses sixteen through seventy-one. The chapter begins with Jesus walking on the water and ends with many of his followers turning away. It reminds us that true discipleship is not about convenience, it is about commitment.
Opening Prayer
SPEAKER_00Let's begin with prayer. Heavenly Father, thank you for another opportunity to open your word. As we study the passage today, strengthen our faith and deepen our commitment to you. Help us to follow Jesus, not because it is easy, but because he alone is the Son of God and the Savior of the world. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Jesus Walks On Water
SPEAKER_00Trafeating the five thousand, Jesus sent his disciples across the Sea of Galilee. As they rode a fear of storm arose and the waves battered their boat. Then they saw Jesus walking on the water. Imagine their fear turning into amazement as Jesus spoke these comforting words. It is I, be not afraid. What a promise for us today. Storms will come, there will be days of uncertainty, sickness, disappointment, and sorrow, but the presence of Jesus changes everything. He may not always calm the storm immediately, but he will always comes to his children in the middle of it. When Jesus is in your boat, you have every reason to trust him.
Why The Crowd Seeks Jesus
SPEAKER_00The next day the crowd searched for Jesus. At first that sounds encouraging, but Jesus knew why they were looking for him. He said they sought him because they had eaten the loaves and were filled. They wanted another free meal. Jesus challenged them not to labor only for food that perishes, but for the food that endures unto everlasting life. How easy it is to become consumed with temporary things. We work for food, houses, careers, and possessions. Those things are necessary, but they are not eternal. Jesus reminds us that our greatest need is spiritual, not physical.
Jesus The Bread Of Life
SPEAKER_00One of the greatest declarations in John's gospel is found in this chapter. Jesus said, I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. Bread sustains physical life. Jesus sustains spiritual life. That promise satisfaction. The world offers many substitutes that promise satisfaction, but none can feel the emptiness of the human heart, only Christ satisfies. When we feed daily upon the Word and walk in fellowship with Him, our souls are strengthened.
When Followers Turn Away
SPEAKER_00As Jesus continued teaching, many struggled to understand His words. Instead of seeking understanding, many chose to walk away. Verse sixty six records one of the saddest moments in the gospel. From that time many of the disciples went back and walked no more with him. These were people who had witnessed miracles. They had heard his teaching, they had followed him for a season, but when his message became difficult, they left. The same temptation exists today. Some people follow Jesus as long as life is comfortable, as long as prayers are answered the way they expect, as long as obedience doesn't require sacrifice, but genuine disciples remain faithful even when following Christ is costly.
Peter’s Answer And Lasting Faith
SPEAKER_00After many had departed, Jesus turned to the twelve disciples and asked a searching question Will ye also go away? Simon Peter answered with one of the greatest statements of faith in all the scripture, Lord to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. Peter wasn't saying he understood everything. He wasn't claiming that following Jesus would always be easy. He simply recognized one undeniable truth. There was nowhere else to go. Only Jesus gives eternal life, only Jesus forgives sin, only Jesus offers lasting hope. When life becomes difficult, remember Peter's words. The answer is never to walk away from Christ. The answer is to cling even more closely to him. John closes this chapter by reminding us that not everyone who walks with Jesus truly belongs to him. Jesus knew that Judas would eventually betray him, yet he continued to love, teach, and minister. This reminds us that God sees the heart. He knows who genuinely trusts him and who merely appears to follow him. Our relationship with Christ must be real, personal and wholehearted.
Daily Commitments And Closing Prayer
SPEAKER_00What does this chapter teach us today? First, trust Jesus in the storms of life. His presence is greater than your fears. Second, seek the bread of life every day. Nothing satisfies the soul like Christ. Third, remain faithful when following Jesus becomes difficult. Real faith continues even when the road is hard. Finally, answer Christ's question for yourself. Will you also go away? May our answer always be the same as Peter's. Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life. Father, thank you for sending Jesus the bread of life. Thank you for walking with us through every storm and for giving us the words of eternal life. Strengthen our faith so that we will remain faithful when life becomes difficult. Help us never to seek temporary things above eternal ones, and give us hearts that remain committed to Christ no matter the cost. May our lives continually declare that there is nowhere else to go but to Jesus. We ask these things in his precious name. Amen.
