There's a leadership decision that gets made quietly over and over again inside every growing business. It doesn't show up on a P ⁇ L, it doesn't get discussed in strategy meetings, but it shapes your culture more than almost anything else. It's this. Do I lead in this moment or do I protect how I am perceived in this moment? And a lot of leaders, good leaders, choose perception. They choose to be liked, and it costs them more than they realize. Welcome back to the podcast. Today's conversation is not about being nice, it's about something much deeper. The trade-off between being liked and being respected, and what that trade-off is costing your business. Let's zoom out for a second. At the executive level, your role is no longer to do the work, to fix the problems, or to keep the peace. Your role is to create clarity, set standards, and design accountability into the business. But being light often works against all three of those. So let's break this down into three areas where it's affecting your business. First, you create organizational ambiguity. This isn't about just unclear conversations, it's about an unclear organization. When leaders prioritize being liked, expectations get softened, feedback gets diluted, decisions get delayed, and the organization starts to feel it. You'll see inconsistent execution, misaligned priorities, and different people working towards different definitions of success. And from the outside, it looks like a performance issue, but it's not. It's a clarity issue at the top. If your team is guessing, your leadership is unclear. Secondly, you erode standards at scale. At a small level, being nice looks harmless. At scale, it becomes dangerous. Because leaders don't just manage people, they set the standard for what's acceptable. And every time you avoid addressing something, a missed expectation, a behavior issue, or a performance gap, you're not being nice. You're redefining the standard. And not just for that person, but for everyone watching. Over time, this creates the inconsistent performance, the quiet frustration from high performers, and a culture where good enough becomes normal. Standards don't erode by accident. They erode through avoidance. Lastly, you centralize the business around yourself. And this is where it really hits home. Because nice leaders tend to step in, smooth things over, or fix what isn't working. They become the safety net. But here's the unintended consequence. You train your business and your people to rely on you instead of a system. And now all decisions funnel back up to you. Problems come back to you, and accountability weakens everywhere else. And the next thing you know, you're saying, Why am I in the middle of everything? Why can't anyone just handle this? But the system is working exactly like you trained it to work. If everything comes back to you, that's not a people problem. It's a system design problem. Now where most leadership advice stops short, it tells you what to do. But this is about who you are as a leader. Because being liked is a tie to your identity. I'm approachable, I'm easy to work with, I don't create a lot of tension. Those feel like strengths. But at the executive level, you have to evolve that identity into something more complete. You have to be clear, consistent, and willing to hold the line. You don't scale a business by being more liked. You scale it by being more consistent. Now let's define this even better. Nice leaders manage emotions in the moment. Effective leaders manage outcomes over time. The nice leader says, this is fine. The effective leader says, this isn't where it needs to be, but we're going to work together to fix it. The kindness is still there, but it shows up differently in clarity, in honesty, and not letting people operate below their potential. Here's a simple filter you can use. Before your next leadership moment, ask yourself what does the business need from me right now? Not what feels easiest, what keeps things comfortable, or what preserves the relationship in the short term, but what does the business need? Because often the business needs clarity, it needs a decision, it needs you to hold a standard. Now let me ask you, where in your business are you tolerating what you shouldn't? Where are you delaying addressing an issue that needs to be addressed? Where are you choosing comfort over clarity? And more importantly, do you realize what it's costing you? Not emotionally, but operationally, financially, culturally. If this episode feels a little uncomfortable, it should. Moving from being liked to being effective. And if your business is growing and you feel like you're still too involved, and your team is not stepping up, and standards aren't where they need to be, this is a place where your leadership skills could use a little work. Because at the end of the day, your business will not outperform your leadership. You don't need to be liked in every moment, but you do need to be trusted over time.
