to attend, whether you're uh whether you don't even have like a boyfriend or girlfriend, or you've been married for 10 years, and you just feel like uh maybe there wasn't a foundation established uh thirteen declares this the true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:12.000 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 00:08:12.319 --> 00:08:15.360 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:26.319 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:28.399 This is the word of the Lord. 00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:34.000 May God bless the reading and the proclamation of his promises. 00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:42.559 So in this sermon series, Joy is done, we're kind of taking a look at the first chapter of the book of John, looking at the coming of Jesus. 00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:46.080 It's Advent season, for some of you who might not be familiar with it. 00:08:46.240 --> 00:08:59.840 What it is, is it's a um it's a looking back on the first coming of Jesus and all that he accomplished in his coming, his perfect life, his death in our place, his burial and resurrection. 00:09:00.159 --> 00:09:06.639 But it also looks forward in anticipation to this hope that we have. 00:09:06.879 --> 00:09:15.039 If we believe in the Son of God, if we believe in the person and work of Jesus and what he's accomplished for us, we look in anticipation that he would come again. 00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:17.919 This is what he's promised to us as believers. 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:23.519 And so, with anticipation, we not just look back, but we look forward as well. 00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:30.320 And so what we're looking at is this reality that joy has dawned, that light has broken in. 00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:41.679 And what we see in this theme through John, this first chapter, is he continues to refer to Jesus as the light, the light which came and was dwelling among us. make the lunch rush, uh, but you might be here about five, ten minutes longer than normal. 00:10:22.799 --> 00:10:30.399 But uh John 1, 9 through 13, we're gonna break this down as we seek to understand what this text is saying to us this morning. 00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:39.600 So the first verse, verse 9, comes out and says this that the true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 00:10:39.759 --> 00:10:45.919 This is said, John points this out to contrast Jesus from any man who had come before him. 00:10:46.080 --> 00:10:53.600 You see, uh, we talk of uh here in the beginning parts, he'll talk about uh John the Baptist, who is coming to prepare the way. 00:10:53.759 --> 00:10:59.440 Uh, there's also, as we flip through the pages of scripture, we see other men who carried God's word. 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:12.080 Uh they might have been uh prophets, they might have been teachers, they might have been uh Pharisees and religious leaders, but many prophets and preachers had come before Jesus, proclaiming the words of God. 00:11:12.240 --> 00:11:21.759 But what John is unfolding for us here in the first chapter is that now the word himself was coming who would be the light for all mankind. 00:11:21.919 --> 00:11:37.840 So John the apostle, the writer of this gospel, is making sure to dictate the distinction between those who had come before Christ, preaching of the light, preaching of the word of God, and Jesus Himself, who is the Word. 00:11:39.279 --> 00:11:43.919 So we see that the Word has come and He is the light for all mankind. 00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:48.559 You see, Psalm 119 shows that God's word is light. 00:11:49.039 --> 00:11:57.519 And Jesus here is demonstrated as the fullness of God's word, whom is the light that will destroy the darkness. 00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:04.320 Psalm 119, 105 says this that your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. 00:12:05.919 --> 00:12:13.360 Verse 10, John goes in and says that he was in the world and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:17.200 Let me back up a little bit. 00:12:17.679 --> 00:12:18.639 Light to everyone. 00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:20.720 That's an important part to understand. 00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:26.720 So first, John says that he was the true light, and then he makes the statement that he gives light to everyone. 00:12:26.879 --> 00:12:33.759 We see throughout the gospel narratives that Jesus' primary people to come to were the Jews. 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:40.159 You see, the Apostle John gives us a quick glimpse into the holistic purpose of Jesus' coming. 00:12:40.559 --> 00:12:45.919 It was to give light to all, not just the Jews, but to the Gentiles as well. 00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:53.840 You see, those whom the Jews felt didn't deserve the light, didn't deserve the blessings of God. 00:12:54.559 --> 00:12:56.559 John's very quick to point this out. 00:12:56.720 --> 00:13:09.120 That Jesus wasn't simply coming for the Jews, those who were established and set apart as God's chosen people, but that Jesus was going to be the one who gives light to all people, to everyone. 00:13:09.360 --> 00:13:14.879 And there's trouble that we discover as we read through the narratives that the Jews didn't like this. 00:13:15.120 --> 00:13:17.600 They believed that they were the chosen God of people. 00:13:17.759 --> 00:13:26.720 They believed that those who were Gentiles who were not marked by God didn't deserve the light, didn't deserve the blessing of God that they had. 00:13:29.600 --> 00:13:34.080 How does this view keep us from sharing the light to the world around us? 00:13:34.320 --> 00:13:45.039 Sometimes I think as I was reading this passage that we can get caught up in really believing that there's people around us who don't deserve this light, who don't deserve the blessing of God. 00:13:45.440 --> 00:14:05.279 Whether it be the race that they come from, whether it be the socioeconomic status that they carry, whether it be the belief structures that they hold, we can start to live a life as though, man, they don't deserve this beautiful gospel of grace, this light that's been given to us. 00:14:05.519 --> 00:14:09.440 And we can posture ourselves much like the Jews at times. 00:14:10.559 --> 00:14:24.159 Sometimes as I'm uh picking up my children from school, or uh especially when we lived in a more urban core of the city, there were times when I would look at people and just think of how they don't deserve to have kids. 00:14:24.320 --> 00:14:26.799 They don't deserve to have the things that I have. 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:29.759 Who are these people and why are they here? 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:32.080 They don't deserve to sit at my table. 00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:47.120 My heart was wrecked one day as I was picking up my kids from their school, and I saw a group of people that, you know, they were using all kinds of foul language, and they're like at an elementary school picnic table, just going off on each other. 00:14:47.200 --> 00:14:51.679 They're looking at their Facebook, they're causing all kinds of drama because there's some kind of family issue. 00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:53.039 I don't even know what was going on. 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:59.519 But I remember looking at them and saying, like, just with judgment and disgust of their behavior. 00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:05.759 And the spirit kind of pricked my heart and said, Would you ever have them to share dinner with you in your home? 00:15:06.960 --> 00:15:08.399 I thought, no. 00:15:09.200 --> 00:15:10.879 No, no, I wouldn't. 00:15:11.519 --> 00:15:18.000 And he said, Who are you to judge who deserves the hospitality and the gospel of hope that I've given to you? 00:15:18.159 --> 00:15:20.559 Who are you to judge who gets that and who doesn't? 00:15:20.960 --> 00:15:22.879 And man, that really wrecked my heart. 00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:32.639 Because sometimes I can posture myself in a way where I think that those around me don't deserve what God has so freely given me when I didn't deserve it as well. 00:15:34.159 --> 00:15:41.440 Verse 10, he goes on to say, He was in the world and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:47.200 You see, that which was made, the world did not know its own maker. 00:15:47.600 --> 00:16:08.799 Not only could Jesus be known through all which he had made, for Romans 1.20 tells us that we are without excuse in rejecting God by just simply seeing and gazing upon his creation, but we are also held guilty in this statement by seeing and hearing of his life and ministry and still refusing to know him. 00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:17.679 This know him can be better understood in a language of acceptance or affirmation rather than a language of ignorance. 00:16:18.559 --> 00:16:21.120 And so imagine what John's communicating to us. 00:16:21.519 --> 00:16:28.960 John's saying that the creator of all things came in, he broke in to be with his creation. 00:16:29.600 --> 00:16:35.840 Not just the image bearers of which he created, but he was with us in all that he created in the cosmos. 00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:39.039 He broke into our time and space. 00:16:40.399 --> 00:16:44.720 And the Bible clearly states that the world didn't know him. 00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:48.799 It's not that they were ignorant, it's that they refused to. 00:16:49.279 --> 00:16:53.440 They rejected him, they wouldn't accept him for who he was. 00:16:54.879 --> 00:16:59.039 Verse 11 says that he came to his own and his own people did not receive him. 00:16:59.600 --> 00:17:04.720 You see, Jesus came to culminate the promises and blessings of God to the Jews. 00:17:05.279 --> 00:17:09.039 He came to his own, those whom God had favored above all else. 00:17:09.200 --> 00:17:15.359 Let's let's think for a moment here about the history of the Jews and the relationship with God the Father. 00:17:15.519 --> 00:17:19.039 You see, God had given them his word and his promises. 00:17:19.519 --> 00:17:25.359 He gave them his law, his ten commandments, these things that were life to the Jews. 00:17:25.519 --> 00:17:30.640 He gave them something that consecrated them out through his promises, that he would protect them. 00:17:30.799 --> 00:17:32.640 He protected them against their enemies. 00:17:32.799 --> 00:17:34.799 He conquered wars for their good. 00:17:37.920 --> 00:17:49.920 He caused his presence to dwell among them, yet they continually pursued other joys and other hopes, ultimately pursuing darkness and rejecting the glorious light. 00:17:51.359 --> 00:17:54.559 You see, we can be much like them. 00:17:55.839 --> 00:18:01.119 We can have all the blessings of God and not have God Himself. 00:18:02.640 --> 00:18:17.839 Our lives can be full of all God has to offer and his blessings, but we would be fools to assume that the possession of these blessings demands that we have his greatest blessing. 00:18:18.400 --> 00:18:20.480 The blessing of being his own. 00:18:20.799 --> 00:18:23.119 The blessing of having him as our Father. 00:18:23.359 --> 00:18:35.119 You see, the blessings of God in our lives ultimately demonstrate to us this: that he is relentlessly good and merciful, and we are relentlessly wicked and lustful. 00:18:36.400 --> 00:18:40.240 Let's look at this in the pro parable of the prodigal son. 00:18:41.359 --> 00:18:44.559 This younger son comes up to his father, and what does he say? 00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:50.640 He says, I want everything that you have, but I don't want you. 00:18:51.599 --> 00:18:59.200 All the riches that are meant for me, everything that was meant for my inheritance, for my benefit, for my gain, I want it now. 00:18:59.359 --> 00:19:04.079 And what this son is communicating to his father is that I wish you were dead. 00:19:04.960 --> 00:19:06.720 Because he couldn't receive the inheritance. 00:19:06.799 --> 00:19:10.480 He couldn't receive the riches that was promised to him unless his father had passed. 00:19:10.559 --> 00:19:15.359 And so he looks in his eyes and says, I don't want you, I just want your stuff. 00:19:25.599 --> 00:19:31.039 These people who had everything God had to give. 00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:35.200 As far as earthly protected them. 00:19:41.759 --> 00:19:45.519 He led them by a pillar of fire at night and a pillar of cloud by day. 00:19:45.759 --> 00:19:47.759 He was the one who was with them. 00:19:47.920 --> 00:19:52.079 His presence, his very presence dwelt among them. 00:19:52.160 --> 00:20:01.200 And when he finally breaks in as the light of the world, as Jesus, the Son of God, they say no. 00:20:04.880 --> 00:20:15.359 Verse 12 says this, but to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. 00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:28.319 See, what we have to see here is that the receiving of Christ and believing of his name is not here seen as a prerequisite merit to be given the right to become a child. 00:20:28.559 --> 00:20:31.759 No, these are understood as necessary for each other. 00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:42.000 But as we see this in the text and others, that even the receiving of Christ is a spirit-empowered reality for us. 00:20:42.319 No. 00:20:52.079 --> 00:21:00.880 What we have to understand here is that these two coincide with one another, and one is not meritus of the other, one does not earn them the ability. 00:21:01.839 --> 00:21:29.519 And so we must understand that from this passage of scripture that there is a necessity for us to be born. 00:21:30.480 --> 00:21:34.079 And what that demands is this that we are dead.
