SPEAKER_02You gotta be bent out of shape. Welcome to our first official episode of Bent Out of Shape. We've been getting some reps in for a couple, you know, a couple months. A little nervous. It feels good. I don't know what to do with my hands. Walking out the tunnel. I'm your host, Eric Kendricks.
SPEAKER_01I'm Anthony Barr. How are we doing out there? Um we appreciate you guys tuning in, man. We've been uh talking about this for a while and now we're actually officially doing this. So excited to get moving.
SPEAKER_02College teammates. We went to UCLA together. We met we met at grad night, so we were probably 18 years old. Back in the day. We met at a recruiting visit, but then we linked up at grad night. Kind of ran into each other. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we know each other for a while, man, since uh what 2010? Yeah. That's a trip. 16 years.
SPEAKER_02Had all of our had uh all of the same classes, our freshman year in college.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then um, yeah, obviously we went to the league the other, went to the minute played Minnesota for eight years.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we had an apartment in the same apartment building, not the same apartment, but each our own each our own units in the same building. Yep. Um, so we were inseparable for for a long time. And um it's cool to do this with uh with a good friend. And you know, I think we started this just because um I feel like we have a few things that we want to say. Some things get us bent out of shape, and um it's uh it's cool to be able to share experiences, stories, um, kind of go over the landscape of sports, pop culture, current events, everything. Just talk, just you know, with a homie. So shoot the shit. I hope you guys enjoy what we got going on. So we got a lot in store for y'all today. Um, and we're gonna start
What Has Us Bent Out Of Shape
SPEAKER_01with what has you bent out of shape.
SPEAKER_02Man, there's a squirrel. I mean, what has me bent out of shape?

SPEAKER_02The only thing I can think about first, it's just there's a squirrel in my backyard that's tearing up my outdoor furniture. And this may seem like a first world problem. Hey, it is, but it's been it's bending me out of shape, man. It's putting, it's putting like it's like making holes, and I think it's like making it for its nest or something like that. Okay, but it's literally putting holes in all my furniture.
SPEAKER_01And outdoor furniture is expensive. It's not something that I want to, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's not something that, and it's like literally in the it's not like it's completely noticeable.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I mean, it's got me a bit.
SPEAKER_02What about what's got you been out of shape?
SPEAKER_01What got me been out of shape? Argentina. Not the country, not the country in in its totality, but the Argentinian national football soccer team has me been out of shape for their on the field and their off-the-field antics. Uh, I didn't love how I didn't like how the cruisers.
SPEAKER_02I didn't like how it finished. No, I don't like he said the sore losers. I don't like losers. I think they were sore winners, too. That's true. They didn't win right, too, in my opinion. But uh, I mean, I guess we'll get into some World Cup later.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we'll get into that. But Argentina got me bent out of shape.
Vikings QB Talk: Kyler Vs JJ
SPEAKER_01So let's get let's get into some football talk. That's our forte. That's kind of yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, bread and butter, we play for the Vikings.
SPEAKER_01We know we know a little bit about we play for the Cowboys, play for the Cowboys, play for the Chargers, play for the Chargers, play for the Niners, Niners. Shoot, I've been. You want to we usually want up the coast. That's all it is. So let's talk about our former team real quick, Minnesota Vikings. Um, they got uh some new additions this offseason. I think Kalamari won't Kalamari. You know, Kyler Murray, the uh was it number one or top 10 overall pick X amount of years ago? Has been to the Pro Bowl a couple times, obviously the ex-Arizona Cardinal, and it seemed like he needed to change the scenery and he landed in Minnesota. Um Minnesota didn't re-sign Sam Darnold uh the uh two years ago. They drafted JJ McCarthy, who didn't have a great rookie campaign after he had already missed his first rookie season with an injury. Um, how do you think that quarterback battle is gonna shake out? And do you like the uh the the Vikings taking a flyer on Kyler Murray?
SPEAKER_02I love it. I feel like it's a great opportunity for Kyler to like not only leave the Cardinals and kind of like reestablish himself in the league, you know, fix his reputation because I feel like it was kind of like, you know, I mean, let's just keep it a bug. I feel like it wasn't the best leaving leaving Arizona. So I feel like it gives him a clean slate, kind of like Aaron Donald, I mean not Aaron Donald, Sam Darnold got, you know, with the Seahawks and so on and so forth. But uh it also provides a little competition, you know, competition. Hey, iron sharpens iron. You know what I mean? So like, you know, who whatever whatever you want to get out of your quarterback situation in Minnesota, the best thing to do is to have the best players in on the roster. So like I like that they added him. I like him with KOC. KOC is a big confidence builder in young quarterbacks. And um, I know Kyler's not really a young quarterback, but he's not old either. So like he's kind of in that in-between, he's got some experience, and um, we know he can run fast as hell. And uh, I mean I'm excited to see what he does. You know, I mean, who knows? Is it gonna be more pro style? Is it gonna be more shotgun? Like, I that's where I'm that's where I'm curious because you know, KO likes likes a little bit under center, you know, a little bit play action uh and and all those uh all those seam routes, all those uh long developing down the field routes.
SPEAKER_01I agree. I think having quarterback competition is extremely important, especially for a young quarterback. You can't just hand somebody the keys and expect them to go and win you games right away, especially uh a young quarterback like JJ McCarthy who hasn't yet proven himself. And even in college, he did win a natty, but a lot of people want to say it's because of the defense, because of the running game, because of Coach Harbaugh at the time, um, which could be the which could be the case. So the jury is still very much out on JJ. I'm not soured on him at all. I still think he has all the potential in the world. Will it come to fruition this year? I think maybe lighting a little fire under him saying, hey, you're not necessarily our guy yet. We're gonna bring in somebody else who we think could potentially be the guy and let you guys duke it out. May the best man win.
SPEAKER_02I mean, having a but having a good defense is never, I mean, we Tom Brady, I mean, I I don't want to compare him to Tom Brady, but you know, right, Tom Brady had great defenses. You know what I mean? You need a great defense. Brian Flores, he's gonna get you dialed. He's got he's got what it goes, he's got what it takes. You know what I mean? He he's gonna get you dialed, he's gonna get the players comfortable, like, you know, he's gonna he's gonna fire some stuff up, you know, as quarterback.
SPEAKER_01And Kyler's coming into such a great situation in Minnesota with great weapons on the outside.
SPEAKER_02And we just know how they as a as an organization from top down, like how they do things.
SPEAKER_01They run they do things very, very well in Minnesota.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, exactly. You know, and and it may be super different compared to what he's used to. So it's like Andy.
SPEAKER_01And um, you know, he he played well when he had D Hop as his number one. Now he has JJ, arguably the best receiver in the NFL. He got Jordan Addison opposite to him, and then they got a great uh wide receiver three in Juwan Jennings. And they still got TJ Hawkinson. Juwan Jennings, bro. I for I forgot about that. I mean, he's a dog. He's probably the best, I mean, arguably they got the best receiving call in the NFL. They got him for the low ski, too. Not for the low sky. They got a great deal with him. And he's gonna be a team leader, a locker room leader. He knows coming from uh obviously the Shanahan system, he's gonna be a great addition to the club.
SPEAKER_02Are they are they are
NFC North Picks And Coaching Edges
SPEAKER_02they winning the North? Who like what what what NSC North breakdown? Okay, we got we got the Lions, we got the Bears, we got the Packers, and we got the Vikings. All right, we know Lions the last couple years, super strong team. Yep, lost Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson's now on the Bears. Took a step back last year, which I mean, when you're doing when you have so much success years in a row, it's so hard to maintain.
SPEAKER_01So I don't want to count them out because you know they have a great coach and Dan Campbell, but um I mean they say typically if there's seven, eight playoff teams, half of those teams aren't going to the playoffs the next year. Yeah, that's just how that's just how the NFL works.
SPEAKER_02So players get paid, rosters change, coaches get picked up on other other teams. Ben Johnson.
SPEAKER_01I am gonna stick with the Chicago Bears. Probably see North. Um, and the reasons are because of Ben Johnson. The reasons are because of Caleb Williams, who I think has all the potential in the world. He showed uh uh what he could do on the biggest stages last year in those playoff games, coming back late in fourth quarters, late in uh uh making plays in overtime. Um I'm I think he's a top 10 quarterback in the NFL. I think he is the best quarterback in the NFC North. I would take him over Jared Goff, I take him over um uh Love in uh in Green Bay, and I take him over Kyler or JJ in Minnesota. So I'm still rocking with the Bears. I like what I like what they got going on. And until they're knocked off and somebody else reclaims the North, I gotta rock with Chicago.
SPEAKER_02Man, Ben Johnson is like the one of the, I feel like I say this like I've said it before, my favorite but least favorite coordinator to play against because he makes so many adjustments like during the game. Um, I mean, he knows how to exploit you. He has he knows how to use his players, you know what I mean? I feel like it's it's always very challenging when you're facing him, and you never know what you're gonna get, whether that's like a lineman getting the ball or like a trick play that comes out of like I know you know what I mean? Like we've seen it. It's like it's just like it's annoyingly frustrating. But I mean, if you're if you're if you're on his team, it's it's it's good, I guess.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I think they lacked a little pass rush last year and their defense wasn't super stout, and I think they lost um Kevin Bayard, um, they lost Brisker, um, they lost uh Edmonds at linebacker. So they have a some new influx of guys coming in on the back end. Uh if their defense could be just a tick better than they were last year, I love them uh repeating as NFC North champions.
SPEAKER_02So I mean as far as the other, you know, as far as other parts of the league, I feel like Josh Allen was mentioned as like the the preseason MVP favorite, whatever that means.
Josh Allen Memories And MVP Talk
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I when I think Josh Allen.
SPEAKER_01Come on, bro. Where are you going with this? What do you think about when you think about Josh Allen? We got a special clip for Josh Allen. What do you think about when you think about Josh Allen?
SPEAKER_02I remember his rookie year. They came down to Minnesota, and we were at this time we're rolling cover three defense, like we were hooping. We were hooping, right? We Buffalo is not even like that yet, right? We we we know this. They come down to Minnesota. They first of all they ran like his cover three beater when it was like a someone to the flat, and then he ran the wheel up. I'll never forget that because I was like, whoa, that's exposes to some of our rules. Yeah, but I remember it was around the 50-yard line. We had a scramble by Josh Allen. And I'll let you I'll let you tell the rest.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he jumped over me, okay? He hurtled me like I was a child, and he flew through the air, Jordan-esque, right? Boom, and just and I I'd even go low, which is the crazy part. Like, I was going for a form tackle. No, that's the thing. And that was the thing is you were standing straight up. And I just tackled air, whiffed, fell right in my face. And I'm like, hold on, where did he go? He's he's still running, and I think Stephen Weatherly ended up tackling him. I remember this very vividly. Um, but I will say on that first possession, it was we got to third down. We got off the field, and then Linval got a personal foul on Josh Allen, roughing the passer, and that extended the drive the drive. And then that's the same drive that he jumped over me. So I blame Lin Valley. Okay, it's Linvaugh's fault. Linball's fault, not my fault. Love Lin Val. Taking no accountability.
SPEAKER_02We've we've we've made a lot of plays behind Linvall. So hey, you win some, you lose some.
SPEAKER_01I think Josh was also like so young. He hadn't he was like fearless. He still is pretty much. He is bro, though. He is fearless, bro. He's still fearless. But like when you're such a young player, you don't think of any of the consequences, and you're not like in tune, I guess, with the sort of your surroundings or like who you're playing against to really care. Like, he just went base, uh he just played straight off basic instinct, and he he hurtled me. And I will say, I'm happy that it was Josh Allen that did it. Yeah, yeah. If it was Joe Schmoe, I couldn't live with that. But like, okay, it was a future NFL MVP. Like, hey, if that's gonna be played forever, hey yeah, whatever. I I could live with that.
SPEAKER_02I feel like he gets a lot of criticism for like, you know, some of the some of the choices he makes as a quarterback. Yeah, but the same choices he makes is what makes him the superhero he is. Like the same, the same like fearlessness. Yeah, like I mean, I remember one time we were in Buffalo and um we won a special game in overtime, but uh he was running the ball down the sideline and he could have easily ran out and he turned up and he he tried to truck me. That's crazy. This is crazy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, quarterbacks don't do that. No, they don't do to slide, they try to get you to get a little late hit, but no, he wanted all the smoke.
SPEAKER_02He may have won the battle, but I I definitely got him down. So I'll take that.
SPEAKER_01So he you he's your preseason MVP MVP favorite just off of a rip. I don't like that.
SPEAKER_02I don't, I just don't, I just don't like like I just think it's just so much fucking variables. So many variables, week one and I just wanted to talk about it. I thought I was you know blast.
SPEAKER_01Can't wait to keep going on about this show. Awesome.
Rodgers In Pittsburgh And Old Schemes
SPEAKER_01Um, all right. Let's talk about uh Aaron Rodgers going back to Pittsburgh with Mike McCarthy. You played for Mike. I did. I played for Mike. Mike is a Yenzer too. A Yenzer.
SPEAKER_02What's a Yenzer? Yenzer is like when you're from Pittsburgh. Really? And it's like that's what they call it. Why? I don't know. The hell was a Yenzer? I have no idea. But I never heard of it. But I'm cultured, so I do know that. But a Yenzer is essentially someone who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, if I'm not mistaken. Okay. I believe there's some type of dialect, dialogue, dialect, something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So it's pretty cool that he gets to go back because I mean I know that when we played Pittsburgh when I was with Dallas, he took uh like a tremendous amount of pride in being from Pittsburgh. Yeah, and like giving us his family history and stuff like that, which I think is cool being on the other side of that now, seeing him in Pittsburgh. However, him with Rodgers, when I remember their the Green Bay matchups, I remember there's a ton of arrow slants. So right.
SPEAKER_01And a lot of it was like get to the red zone and then Aaron do your thing, extend the play and find the open guy.
SPEAKER_02I wonder like he's not the same Aaron Rodgers though that he was in Green Bay, and I wonder like how much like like, and I know that a lot of Aaron Rodgers was doing a lot of like, I won't say play calling, but like he had a he always does. He has the he has a lot of the reins of the offense, right? So I wonder if they're gonna like kind of transition back to that old relationship between him and or they're gonna kind of start anew and bring fresh concepts of like things that they learned from other people now that they've been with other people, you know, other teams, other coaches. So I'm actually curious to think that you know I think their race relationship might develop in a good way because they both bring new things to the table versus like relying on their stuff in the past.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I can see that for sure. And I got respect for A-Rod. I know we had our differences in the past and whatever, you know, the Vikings, Packers rivalry, and we've had our you know, our our occurrences.
SPEAKER_02Is he still the best quarterback you've ever played against?
SPEAKER_01In his prime, I yes. Yeah, I mean, he could make every throw, he was like sneaky fast, and he was like he was just an ultimate consistent. Yeah, he they were never out of a game, and he always seemed to lead them to success until they got to the playoffs. They faltered a few times. But in his prime, yeah, he was he was probably the best. I can't think of anybody else that I would pick over him.
SPEAKER_02So I mean, and and to piggyback off of uh McCarthy, you know, obviously
Cowboys Outlook And Dak Respect
SPEAKER_02former former Dallas Cowboys head coach. Yeah, what do we think about Dallas? I mean, I feel like we always, I mean, everybody, you know, Dallas is always hot, so we might as well talk about Dallas. Yeah, I mean I played there, you played there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was a great place to play, I think. First of all, as a player, you have all the resources in the world. Um, there's some stuff that I I didn't love, I will say. I don't think any of their moves really like move the needle all that much for me. I think they kind of Which is kind of like every offseason. Yeah, it's kind of very they like we got it, we're gonna draft our guys, we're gonna draft guys, we're gonna draft well. They do draft well, and they got Caleb Downs out of Ohio State, who I think is kind of a steal. I think he fell at number 10, and he's an absolute stud. So I think their defense should be improved. Um, I think Dak is a top 10 quarterback. You know, every time I played against Dak or played with Dak, he's played well. I got nothing but respect for him. He always plays hard. He's a lot of wins.
SPEAKER_02A lot of wins versus uh versus me when we played against him.
SPEAKER_01He always plays hard, man. He puts the ball in the right spot, and he's a he's a really he's a leader. Like he's a he's a guy that you want to go and play with. And um, I got nothing but respect for Dak Prescott. So I hope that they can be competitive. I think the NFL is better when Dallas is good. I just I'm not super moved by any of their offseason additions and their defense is gonna be a you know the question again. So we'll see they're gonna put up points with C D with uh George Pickens and and Dak, they're gonna they're gonna move throw the ball around and be fine on offense. Can they defend? That'll be
Turf Vs Grass And Player Safety
SPEAKER_01the question.
SPEAKER_02I mean one thing that has been getting me kind of tight, another thing that's getting me bent out of shape, I should say, is seeing all these NFL stadiums with beautiful grass. Ooh, luscious. Like I'm talking about MetLife, I'm talking about SoFi. Wow, that's a great point. Atlanta. I mean, we can the list goes on and on. Places that have are notorious for having turf, and not only turf, but like, you know, turf that's really heavy heavily criticized. You know what I mean? So it's like seeing them with grass, I mean, I could just imagine coming out of the locker room, smelling the grass, nothing like that rolling landing on the grass.
SPEAKER_01Good God. Well, I mean, if you watch the World Cup, how many like non-contact injuries did you see? Or guys like foot getting stuck in the ground?
SPEAKER_02I saw one, but a guy he got landed, he got tackled from behind, like a like a slide tackle from behind, and he got landed on.
SPEAKER_01That was a Canadian game where the guy snapped his leg in half. Yes, and then came in and ran up to score. He got a red car, yeah. That was their second road of the game. They scored like seven goals that yeah, they were just ticked.
SPEAKER_02So, but other than that, maybe a hammy late in the hot game. But like soft tissue is gonna happen.
SPEAKER_01But it's like you're right though. You're right. So an entity like FIFA can come in and demand grass for their athletes. And they get it, and they get it immediately immediately in the NFL billion, billion, billion dollar industry, and we can't get grass consistently for our players.
SPEAKER_02My my uh my wife was just asking me today what like what scar this was from, or maybe it was my Pilates CJ, one or the other. Okay, and I'm like, it's turf.
SPEAKER_01Turf burn. And that's that's for life. That ain't going nowhere.
SPEAKER_02It's just turf. I have them all over. And that's just from that's just from sliding.
SPEAKER_01That's not even an injury. I mean, I had a I had a camp, uh youth camp this uh summer, not maybe a month ago, that you came out to. And by like hour three, you were like, bro, my back is fried. And I'm like, why? Like, dude, you're just over here. He's like, no, the turf, yeah, it's like working its way up my spine and it's really causing me some issues from no for sure. I mean, un especially when it's like an ungroomed turf.
SPEAKER_02Oh, like the main the turf maintenance is so crucial when you have turf. Like some turfs are just better than others. Everybody knows that.
SPEAKER_01And you think it's simply an economical thing with the NFL why they don't want to make it consistently grassed? Is it because they don't want to have to change it out every week or two? It's just a money thing.
SPEAKER_02I would I would like to think that it's a it's a money thing, but I just think that from the history of the NFL and like talking to the forefathers, and yes, I have talked to people who played in the NFL 30 years ago.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02I think it's just one of those things that they just don't want to give up because what what are the players gonna ask for next? You know what I mean? Like negotiation. If if if they give us the turf, we move on to the next thing that we want. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01God forbid we get some buttons.
SPEAKER_02That's I just think that it's like it's just like it's it has to be a push and pull. It has to be like and unfortunately, but you I don't think it's the money.
SPEAKER_01Don't you want to protect if they're if they're healthy longer, the chance of them winning or goes up extra. And if they're happy, and they're happy, if they're happy, they're they're gonna play better for you, too. And their careers get extended, and now you have a guy, you know, whatever, 10 years instead of eight years or four years. So we can go on and on about this, man. That is that is some BS.
SPEAKER_02All I know is they the it looks good with turf.
World Cup Final Drama And Officiating
SPEAKER_01Speaking of the World Cup, you watched the game. I think the whole world did. I think the World Cup is the most viewed sporting event in the history of sports, whether it's Super Bowl, whether it's the Olympics, the World Cup always dominates. Yeah, I think there's like a billion, 1.2 or 3 billion, Kyle, fact-check me, on how many uh viewers the World Cup got. And everyone was glued to the TV. I was glued. I was glued. It was Messi's potential last World Cup ever, and a team of Argentinian team. Ronaldo's potentially last World Cup ever. For sure. Messi and the Argentinian team who's kind of got there with some controversy. And their their team is good, but they don't have like they don't have another superstar on that team other than Messi. They got Julian Alvarez, who's really good. They got a couple of really good players, but no one of Messi's magnitude against a Spanish side who was just relentless on defense. Their whole back four and their goalie played outstanding all tournament. Arguably a much harder route to the finals. Absolutely. And it was like the clash of Titans. And was there a team you were, I think I know, but was there a team you were like hoping would win, or were you just, I'm in here for a good game. I don't really care about the outcome. I want to see Messi play well. I want to see a good match, maybe some goals scored, maybe some friction on the field. Like, what was your thing? Was there a team I hope would win? Spain, bruh. Spain? Why Spain?
SPEAKER_02Why why were you so heavily in favor of Spain? Argentina was on some BS, bro. You think back to the Egypt? Egypt, bro. You think back to even the Cape Verde match when they were on the brink of being, you know, going to PKs with a team with the size of a country that's like 100,000 people. And it felt like in that match it came down to extra time, obviously, and Argentina scored, then Cape Verde scored, then Argentina scored again. And then it was like Cape Verde was threatening, and it was it was three minutes on the uh the stoppage time, and there was a lot of stoppage during that three minutes, so it should have been extended, it seemed like. But white when that three minutes hit, brrrk, brrrk, game over. And people were like, hold on, we got still at least two or three minutes to play. And that's another whole issue.
SPEAKER_02I just feel like I just feel like this is like the ball, like everything always goes their way.
SPEAKER_01Like they're how apparently they had the most. Hold on, I got I got and I again fact check me on this, but I have a tweet that came across my attention. The only team not to have a single VAR intervention against them, most fouls of any team in the World Cup, zero red cards, except for the finals, most penalties awarded. Which, okay, that maybe that's that's a var checks it and maybe that's a little more subjective. Um, or objective, I'm sorry. Most opponents' goals disallowed, most opponents' yellow cards, so the team they played got the most yellow cards, this is overwhelming and the least distance traveled of any team in the World Cup.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they and they played a lot, like a ton of night games when everyone was.
SPEAKER_01In better conditions than most teams. So it was like was is there an agenda being pushed by FIFA to get Messi and this team another World Cup? It felt that way. And I think that's why it was unsettling to watch in real time because Paredes came on uh in on the second half of the game, and he was more came in almost like an enforcer. He got a yellow card within two minutes of being on the pitch. And then he got another one, and another one, and another one. He should have had like nine yellow cards. He I watched him get a yellow card in like the 48th minute against Danny Omel, pushing him over right in front of the ref. Rightfully got a yellow card. But then he committed like three or four more challenges that could have been yellow. It probably should have been. And all he got was warnings because I guess one of them maybe a reason why is because Enzo had got sent off uh not too late, uh, too long after he got put on the field. But it's like if it was any other player, or if that was a Spain guy that was on a yellow and then committed the same type of fouls, I think he's getting the second yellow and getting sent off. So it felt like they were always getting the benefit of the doubt for for most of the time.
SPEAKER_02And you know what? And at the and I've always had respect for Messi, and I always will have respect for Messi. But for him to try to get my dog Cucarea, is that how you say it? 24 from Spain, a workhorse, a guy who plays with integrity, a guy who does things the right way, for him to try to get him out of the game for a brief covering of the mouth. That's that that actually had me tight because I thought that that was like that was desperate. That was dead, not only desperate, like you're obviously getting your ass kicked in the game.
SPEAKER_01But like just like McGregor, zero shots.
SPEAKER_02Why would you want to win that way?
SPEAKER_01I mean, at that point, I think he was so desperate to win that he was like, I need to even this playing field because we're gonna lose this match.
SPEAKER_02I'm all about I'm all about the cheeky little ball moves and stuff like that. Like, that's game, that's gamesmanship. Okay, cool. But for you to try to get me out of the game for something that was not even like minor.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's not saying anything racially incredible. No, it was like he He was like, he's basically saying, like, bro, you guys are playing way too rough, or bro, my guy's injured his mouth. Like, whatever he was saying, it didn't seem like it was gonna be oh, messy you're up, blah, blah, blah. Like, that's not what he was going for. And so it did feel a little cheap. That that happened. I I totally understand. I will say Spain made some great substitutions in that. Ferrantors coming on the pitch and Nico Williams coming on the pitch.
SPEAKER_02And Nico Williams got a goal taken away.
SPEAKER_01Of course he did. It was Argentina. That wasn't a that wasn't a foul. Oh, because the guy stepped on his foot that he planted under his legs.

SPEAKER_01Goal denied. First, how'd the ref see that in real time? No chance he saw that. So I said another little thing that's pushed me the Spanish side. Um, but those two coming on made an immediate impact in that match, and ended up being Nico Williams had the assist on the front end towards goal an extra time.
SPEAKER_02And it was like the match. That was a spark they needed. Like that was a spark they needed. Sub substitutes, this whole World Cup, like, you know, I I obviously this is the most the most I've ever paid attention to the World Cup or you know, any any football matches for for this period of time. Like I enjoy going to him live, but like you were invested. Substitutes, they mattered so much throughout the whole tournament, and it was refreshing to see a guy come off the bench and eat immediately make an impact for his team in a positive way. Like that is like that's that's how you rise to the occasion, that's how you earn your country's respect. That's how you go for it that's how you get a bag, to be honest. Like, that's how you become a guy, you know what I mean? These guys are all guys, let's be real.
SPEAKER_01But like, and it was a lack of substitutions for Argentina that was like the glaring difference. I think they had a two possible offensive substitutions that they could have made with uh Martinez coming on the pitch or Nico Paz coming on the pitch. And I know Nico Paz is a young guy, but they didn't make those, they went a little defensive, especially after they went a man down, which okay, it makes sense, but that left the whole attack up to Messi and Julio Alvarez, and those guys were getting destroyed offensive or on the offensive side when they were going up Cucare, when they were going up against Pedro Porro, when they were going up against Laporte. It was like the Spanish defense had those guys in Alcatraz, like on in prison, in handcuffs, all match. They did that to every team they played.

Why US Soccer Misses Talent
SPEAKER_02If if like I mean, I know we hear this argument a lot, but like let's say that you were, you know, actually had a little bit more heritage in Spain, and you came up in a better US soccer, like soccer system, or like what what is if the best athletes in the United States actually, in fact, did play soccer, because you know, I feel like the best athletes play football and basketball, to keep it a book.

SPEAKER_02Um I remember my first football, I think it cost $125 for me to join a team. Okay, which wasn't everything, which even was a stretch then. But it's like that's accessible though. It's more doable than my brother. My I I couldn't even I couldn't even play club soccer the same time my brother played club soccer. I would go to his practices because my mom couldn't afford both of us to be on club soccer teams. It was that so I would go to I would go to my brother's club soccer practices and practice with his team like as an extra, as an extra body, but never but would not be allowed to play in any of the games.

SPEAKER_02I bet he was so and I remember, I mean, this I'm I remember my mom, my mom like like I want to say crying the bills were not easy to pay.

SPEAKER_01Damn, that coach must have been so hurt knowing that his best guy was I'm out.
SPEAKER_02And when my brother started playing football in eighth grade is when I started playing in sixth grade. So not only did they lose one person one dog, they lost two people to soccer in one year.
SPEAKER_01That is crazy. And that's the truth, that's the truth. I never even played no, that's not I played one soccer match my entire life, but I never played organized soccer. It was not even like a thought. If you played soccer, they'd be asking for your birth certificate. Oh, immediately. I am 12. But I mean, I feel like I could have played goalie or something. Yeah, oh yeah, or put me up as striker. I I would think I prefer center back because I could just be a little more physical and like be a little more imposing. Facilitate, hold the ball. Kill some hitters on some corners, some crossers. Uh, but I think that's a great point. Like, our best athletes aren't pushed into soccer, it's not fun. But I think maybe this World Cup is going to inspire that.
SPEAKER_02And I hope I hope it's inspire it's inspiring our youth development systems to like I mean we need better infrastructure. I I I say that, but like, are we rooted in in the financials too heavy to where this is such just so lucrative that we can do it?
SPEAKER_01People try to monetize child sports, youth sports, uh uh all the time.
SPEAKER_02Because I saw a couple takes about how like the clubs investing into the kids versus you know the the kids investing into the clubs, and until we have some like at least a little bit more better of a mix in that.

Well, I don't know if I read something about how Germany, once they got knocked out or they didn't make a group stage or they missed a World Cup, whatever, they invested so much money into soccer infrastructure around their country where there was an academy within like 10 miles within every kid in the whole country.
SPEAKER_02Well, I mean, I saw I saw Chelsea, I saw uh Instagram of Chelsea putting uh a soccer pitch, like a like a street soccer pitch in the middle of the favelas in Brazil.

SPEAKER_02So like Chelsea, like they just they know that Brazil has talent, they know that they love soccer. Yeah, they are already campaigning for them that's crazy, bro.

But pre-practice, him and Coach Zim would always have like little banters and like you know, little conversations. And Everson and Zim was a hard guy to approach um at first. And Everson was not shy about it. No, he broke those walls down. Zim loved Everson for that reason because they were he was able to talk to him a certain way that no one else could really talk to him. And Zim always wore these like these old ass, remember those old sweatpants that he wore? The baggy ones. And Zim was like, hit a nice little belly on him, but he had no backside. He was like built like inverted almost. And Everson would always talk shit about that. And Zim also always kept a lady with him, respectfully. Like he he had a once his wife passed, God rest her soul, he always had a nice, like, a nice, a nice looking lady with him, way younger, like 30, 35. And when he would be upset or like be grumpy in the morning, Everison would be like, Hey, coach them. I know who didn't get no ass last night. You and we'd be at pre-practice and everybody starts dying. And Zim would be like, and you know, hit a little smirk. And I was like, Man, Zim is a lot of Everton's the only guy that could talk to him.

He's all but this is my this is my hobby, this is my passion. I love I love working on cars, I love driving cars. Um yeah, bro. Like I just love cars, and it's like I can't. Wait to explore them further. Yeah, what is like? Do you have any crazy like car stories about like either in the NFL or like obviously there's a bunch of guys who spend a lot of money on cars throughout the league?

SPEAKER_02What's give me a good NFL car story?
SPEAKER_01Hmm. Um I I I can't think of one off the top, but I could tell you who I think has one of the better car collections in the NFL. Who? Patrick Peterson. Oh, yeah, Pat P. Pat P has some absolutely insane whips. He has like a Mercedes Black series, is that what it's called? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The the GT Black series? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's nuts. Looks like the Batmobile. It is so sexy. And every time he pulled up to work, it was like new whip, new whip.
SPEAKER_02Was there any dumb car purchases that you've seen throughout the league? Yeah. Like early on?
SPEAKER_01My boy Irv Smith. I love Irv. He did he get was it a purple four by four G-Wagon? No, no, he had a neon yellow.
SPEAKER_02But actually, those I think are pretty decent on value. Are they? Well, I mean But he got two, he got two. I remember Irv got two forerunners. He in different colors. No shit. Yeah, he got one yellow one and one orange one. I'm not saying it was a bad purchase. Do you know anybody who's bought two of the same car?
SPEAKER_01Yes. Taylor Mays. Bro, Taylor Mays was on our team for like a second. Yeah. And I was when we got to Minnesota. Robin, I got to Minnesota. Yes. And like Taylor Mays, like backtrack a little bit. Like in high school, he was like my. Oh bro, he was he was the biggest, strongest, number two with the visor with the three-bar face mask. The most hardest hit safety in the league. Absolutely swore off. He ran like a 4-2, jumped like 40, uh, had a 40-inch vert. And I'm like, this guy is the coolest looking safety in the world. So when he came to Minnesota, I was like, I have to talk to him. Yeah, yeah. I told him, like, bro, Taylor Major, you were like my favorite player growing up. And I'm like, so like, how's Minnesota going? Like, what have you been doing? He's like, Oh, I just bought a new car, bro. I'm like, oh bro, what'd you get? He said that S500. I'm like, oh, that's tough. Like, that's cool, man. He's like, actually, I bought two. I'm like, you did what? He said, yeah, I bought two S500s. I'm like, like different colors or like different. He's like, no, same exact one. I love this car so much that I bought two. And then I was like, man, Taylor's different, bro. Like, I wasn't expecting you to say you got two of the same car. That's wild to me. Yeah, that is wild. Why would I mean he loved the bro, he he was like, I love this car so much, I needed to get two.
SPEAKER_02I know people who have like collectors' cars, they buy the same car over and over and over for like to hold them and like make a lot of money. Different years or just the same one? No, like the same car, they buy a couple versions of it, like maybe different colors. Yeah, and what they do is they buy like eight of them and they they sit on them. Okay, okay, and they make sense. And then the the value of the cars increases, and then now if they if I have nine, if I have 10 cars out of 500 made, right, then I'm up. And none of them, none of them for sale, I can kind of control the market. Okay, so that's it's it's a financial kind of decision where it's like I get that, but if it's an S500 or S550, different. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01That sounds like a little bit you know who also has a pretty cool car collection. I don't know if he's gonna love us talking about it because he's a very low-key guy, is Daniel. Oh bro, the best Daniel has an insane car collection. The best car collection. And I didn't even know he was really into cars until like maybe two or the second or third year of him being on our team. Very humble guy. Has he ever talked to you about like oh how he fell in love with cars? Has it always been a thing? No, so me and Dal. I don't speak for it.
SPEAKER_02No, no, me and Daniil were roommates in uh our our first year in the league. First, I think maybe first and second year with Minnesota, because we had to have roommates on the road, okay, those those first couple years. Yeah, and me and Danil would literally be scheming about how we're gonna ball out and what cars we're gonna buy. Yeah, bro. Like this is early on. Like Danil was all about the hellcat. And he'll tell you this like he copied that. He did cop it. That was the first, that was the first car that he got. Like he was all about the hellcat. Yeah, and I was like, Daniil, I'm like, bro, the GT3RS, like that is the car. Like, oh my god. So like we both got our whips, like low-key, and Daniil's gotten a lot more whips since then. Several more, yeah. Yeah, so have I. So absolutely. It's cool to meet, you know. Me and him, we came in the league, we love cars, and our car relationship is definitely developed, and now it's like we do all this cool car stuff, you know, that the league has opened doors for us. You know what I mean? Like, I gotta have this cool garage and work on my cars. I've always wanted that. Um, and it's like, you know, that's my passion.

Family Updates And Parenting Reality

SPEAKER_02Another segment we have is like family business.

SPEAKER_02I like family business. I feel like it gives us it gives you a little insight of like, you know, more into our personal lives, more into what we, you know, what we have going on in our families.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah, like what's what's going on relationship-wise, family business.
SPEAKER_01Well, oh, my brother, he just moved back to California. Um, where was he at? He was in Memphis working for the University of Memphis. Okay. Um, in like operations. Okay. And he just got hired by the new football staff, Bob Chesney and Co. Nice. As the director of player development and alumni relations. Oh, nice. Um, I think we can both agree that historically UCLA hasn't had the strongest alumni relationships. Um, I think obviously being players not too far removed, you know, 10 10 years or so, we still feel a very close affiliation with the school and we feel welcomed um every time we go there. But I I know from some peers that they don't have that same experience. Um, so I think he was brought on because he proposed like a plan to kind of mend some of these relationships and um like an alumni golf tournament. Like, why does UCLA not have a football alumni golf tournament? Like, you know, he was opposing qua uh some ideas like that. But it's really cool to see him. He graduated from UCLA. Yeah, he played football there. He takes pride in it. He's uh he loved his experience at UCLA. So to see him now have the opportunity to work there in a different capacity while still being involved with the football team. And you get your brother back, and I get my brother, my my homie back, my golfing partner back. Like that's great. It's it was just like a full circle moment, and like it made me emotional. Just like I'm so proud of him, and I got so much love for him, and I know he's gonna do a great job because he's a hardworking kid. Um, he takes he takes his work very seriously.
SPEAKER_02No, he did he is. He's like he he's a he's a man of his word, and like he's a great golfer.
SPEAKER_01He's a stand-up dude, man. So I'm uh I'm excited to have him back.
SPEAKER_02And and he actually asked me today what time I was working out at UCLA, and he came and met and he came and swear. Came and just chopped it up with me for a couple minutes before he. I mean, that's the kind of guy he is.
SPEAKER_01He's already working, guys. The job is done. First day on the job.
SPEAKER_02Actually, today was his first day.
SPEAKER_01The job is done. How about yourself? What you got going on?
SPEAKER_02Man, bro. We I just got back from a family vacation with the kids, bro. Like, if I may ask. We went to this place called Gaza Ranch, which is like basically Disneyland. I guess like a lake Disneyland. Like it's like I it's crazy. It's like golfing, it's like, you know, boat rides, utopia. Utopia for kids. Like, it's like they everything you think of, they can they like think about it. But I went with my kids, man. My kids are growing up so fast, and it's just cool to have these experiences with them. Um but dude, like my people say that that terrible twos, right? My son is three. Threes three is for me is already starting off a little bit harder than two was. You know what I mean? Like, he's very aware, he knows exactly what's going on, he talks, you know what I mean. Like, he can communicate more with us, but like emotional, like, emotions are kind of everywhere. You know, they want what they want when they want it, you know, trying to teach them, you know, manners, you know, you got I gotta lead by example. Tons of like variables that come along with you know having kids. And my daughter right now, bro, my daughter is just so freaking cute. She got you. When she gets angry, she gets angry though. But like, moment, bro, she's been she was like all the whole the whole trip, she was daddy's girl, which like both my kids were kind of mama's boy, mama's girl for a while. But my my my girl's low-key transitioning to be like dad, that like always, all the time, and I'm not really used to it, but like, bro, I'm loving it. That's awesome. Low-key.

Wins Confessions And Closing Thoughts

SPEAKER_01Um wins, confessions. Um so I was just in Minnesota for a charity event for my nonprofit raishebar.org. Check it out. Um, a fundraising event. And before I left the house, I did a load of laundry. I did not take that laundry out of the washing machine. So when I got back five days later, it smelled like a dead body. Oh my god. Like upstairs in my house.
SPEAKER_02And did you toss the clothes or do you run them back?
SPEAKER_01No, I I I run it back. I'm not I'm not tossing clothes. We won't get it in a couple of things. I'm gonna run it until it smells bad. I agree. And you can do there's a there's a laundry cleaner, there's a washing machine cleaner. But my girl was tight because she was like, it smells like shit in here, and it's your fault. And I'm like, you're right. So let me uh let me go about that and let me let me take care of that. So that that is something I drop the ball on, and something I do a little more often than I wish I did, but laundry, I it's it's it's tough, you know.
SPEAKER_02I mean, what I mean with me and my wife have been together for a while, and obviously we've had we just we have two kids now, and as you I mean, as you get married and as you have kids, you'll realize that like your relationship with your wife before kids, or like as you're as a girlfriend, as a fiance, as a wife, post kids, it's always changing, and like the communication is not always how it used to be, as far as like ever just things are changing, your life is moving differently, like you have more things to worry about. So, like this is a me telling you trying to give you advice, but also giving myself advice. Give yourself a little grace, okay. You know what I mean? Be able to adjust, but also like buckle up, you know what I mean? Like, it's a lot, you know what I mean. Like, I mean, like, this is real talk, right? But so it's like sometimes it's a bumpy road. So, like, yeah, some so like that's okay. It's just it's just it's just constantly evolving, and it's and it's a beautiful thing called life. You know, amen. I don't know if that was that was kind of like that was deep, I like that came from that.
