about eternal life. 00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:20.560 But the scriptures and what Jesus teaches is the soul is not just about eternal life. 00:03:20.719 --> 00:03:22.960 Your eternal life begins now. 00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:49.199 But man, I don't know if you've noticed, but man, my decision maker really struggles with small decisions, habits, things that that annoy me and annoy my wife. 00:04:49.680 --> 00:04:58.160 I mean, just those little things that we struggle with is because our will has been compromised by sin. 00:04:58.879 --> 00:05:01.600 Romans 3.23 says, all of us have sinned. 00:05:01.920 --> 00:05:10.720 Romans chapter 7, Paul speaks about how he does what he doesn't want to do, and even though he knows he doesn't want to do it, he will still do it. 00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:14.879 And so it's the struggle of the compromised, sinful will. 00:05:15.040 --> 00:05:16.639 The next part is the mind. 00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:19.279 It's the seat of the emotions. things. 00:05:58.800 --> 00:06:00.959 Our bodies allow us to to drive. 00:06:01.279 --> 00:06:07.920 It allows us to walk, it allows us to um you know to tie our shoes, it allows us to do things. 00:06:08.160 --> 00:06:10.560 And then next is the soul. 00:06:10.800 --> 00:06:17.839 And the soul is the capacity to integrate all of these things into a single whole life. 00:06:18.800 --> through scripture is that when you align your will, your mind, your body, and with the things of God, and your soul is aligned, you are filled and walking in the fullness of God. 00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:47.920 The Hebrew people called it shalom. 00:06:48.639 --> 00:06:49.839 It's peace. 00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:54.879 It's peace that the scripture says surpasses understanding. 00:06:55.199 --> 00:07:03.759 When you see somebody, you say shalom. 00:07:03.839 --> 00:07:05.600 When you leave or depart, you say shalom. 00:07:05.759 --> 00:07:12.319 But shalom in in the Hebrew life is a full --> 00:08:06.879 If I could get my child fixed and settled in the right direction, or if I can, it's always something I need, I need, I need. 00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:20.800 But in reality, we need to statement about today, and we're gonna flesh this out over the next couple of weeks even in more detail. 00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:13.840 But having a restored soul through Jesus does not exclude us from hardships, hurts, and the harshness of this earthly life. 00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:28.720 Having a restored soul does not exclude you from hurt, from pain, from hardships, from difficult circumstances, from experiencing loss, from experiencing lows. 00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:35.440 And I was thinking back to when I came and put my faith in Jesus Christ at the age of 18 years. 00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:41.279 At 18 years old, I was I was I was I had a spiritual high. 00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:43.519 Many of you have experienced this. 00:09:43.679 --> 00:09:51.519 Maybe when you came to Christ or at other times in your spiritual journey, you were, you were, let's just say, you were fired up. 00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:53.200 You were so excited. 00:09:53.360 --> 00:10:01.279 I remember when I came to Christ and Jesus began to change my life, I couldn't get enough of worship. 00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:03.039 I couldn't get enough of the word. 00:10:03.279 --> 00:10:05.440 I couldn't get enough time with God. 00:10:05.679 --> 00:10:07.039 I was so excited. 00:10:07.200 --> 00:10:12.559 I was so um, I was learning and I couldn't, I couldn't get enough information. 00:10:12.720 --> 00:10:17.519 I couldn't get enough of spiritual food and nourishment. 00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:19.519 And I I wanted to be with the Lord. 00:10:19.679 --> 00:10:20.720 I was engaged with him. 00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:25.919 I didn't, when I would go sit in church, I wouldn't, I just couldn't hardly stand it. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:28.320 I'm a very physical worshiper. 00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:32.799 I want to, I want to experience the Lord in my posture. 00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:34.720 It affects who we are. 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:39.679 And and and I couldn't get enough of fellowship with other believers. And man, that made me feel special. 00:10:50.159 --> 00:10:58.480 And I and I I joined one of the community groups, and I couldn't get enough time with other believers and other um uh people walking with Jesus. 00:10:59.039 --> 00:11:04.320 The fellowship with people that were in the body of Christ, I couldn't get enough. 00:11:04.720 --> 00:11:12.399 I I began I became extremely passionate about my friends who were still outside the faith. 00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:18.320 I shared recently about one of my best friends throughout high school, Joey Adams. 00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:20.720 I said, Joey, please come to church with me. 00:11:20.879 --> 00:11:24.639 I broke up with a girlfriend, I said, please come to church with me. 00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:28.240 I began to talk and share my faith with people in my family. 00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:31.039 I began to reach out to people that I worked with. 00:11:31.200 --> 00:11:34.399 It was it changed my entire life. 00:11:35.600 --> 00:11:38.080 But it didn't stay that way all the time. 00:11:39.600 --> 00:11:42.480 It doesn't stay that way all the time. 00:11:43.120 --> 00:12:08.799 We experience spiritual ties, but we are going to live, if we live in this broken world, we're going to experience circumstances, difficulty, hardship, where the honeymoon phase is over, the luster of the new spiritual high is gone, and life begins to creep in. 00:12:09.200 --> 00:12:27.440 And there really is an enemy, there really is a devil, there really are spiritual forces working against you, and they don't want you to experience joy, they don't want you to experience contentment, they don't want you to be confident in the Lord, they want you to be depressed and doubtful, and they want you to be on a spiritual low. 00:12:28.559 --> 00:12:41.600 And so the soul is the deepest part of who you are, and just as much as the soul is involved in spiritual highs, the soul is involved in your spiritual lows. 00:12:45.519 --> 00:12:46.480 And and mental health and emotional health and all those things are are major, major issues, and they need to be addressed out from scripture and they need to be addressed in the church, and they need to you need to know that it's okay to not be okay. 00:13:27.440 --> 00:13:38.720 There's not something wrong with you if you experience what uh Saint John of the Cross coined the term, the phrase, the dark night of the soul. 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:52.000 In the 1500s, Saint John of the Cross was a Catholic Church leader and he had some suggestions for the Catholic Church, and the Catholic Church didn't like his suggestions, and so they they didn't they didn't kick him out of church, they threw him in jail. 00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:56.799 And so while he's in jail, he he gets a little bit depressed. 00:13:57.440 --> 00:14:12.720 And he he writes a famous work titled The Dark Night of the Soul, where where this term comes from, and and and it describes a spiritual crisis in life, a There, there are it might be just having the blahs that come with um just the the pace of life or the difficulty of life or maybe maybe difficulties in in your marriage or your um relationships or your parenting, whatever it is, the blahs. 00:14:40.240 --> 00:14:50.240 And then in between you've got all different levels of depression or the dark night of the soul, all the way to crisis level, But it can be a part of your life as a follower of Jesus, and when you follow Jesus and when you are following the way of Jesus, it doesn't exclude you from hardships and difficulties and even the dark night of the soul or depression, it's called. 00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:32.559 It doesn't mean you're less spiritual, it doesn't mean you're less of a Jesus follower. 00:15:32.720 --> 00:15:36.320 00:15:52.879 It's laments. 00:15:53.360 --> 00:15:55.600 It is him crying out to God. 00:15:56.080 --> 00:16:10.720 Um of the great spiritual giants that we see in Scripture, some of the great spiritual giants that we see in church history experienced what they would call the absence of God or the silence of God. 00:16:13.039 --> 00:16:17.200 And our spiritual disciplines aren't really Because he's a prophet and he speaks out against Herod because he's been in an illicit affair relationship with someone outside of his marriage. 00:19:10.319 --> 00:19:17.359 He speaks and he calls out, he speaks truth, calls out sin, and he ends up in prison and jail. 00:19:18.799 --> 00:19:20.720 Matthew 11, 2. 00:19:21.680 --> 00:19:34.559 John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing, so he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, are you the Messiah we've been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else? 00:19:37.440 --> 00:19:38.079 What? 00:19:40.480 --> 00:19:50.960 Okay, the heavens open up, the dove descends, God speaks audibly, and you're asking, is he the one? 00:19:56.000 --> 00:20:07.759 See, when you get into despair and
