we want to consider tonight is what makes uh Good Friday so good. 00:22:30.400 --> 00:22:42.400 We know it's the day of uh Jesus' death and his crucifixion, um, but what makes it so significant and what makes uh Good Friday so good for us that follow Jesus? 00:22:42.480 --> 00:22:51.839 Um Nathan and I are gonna specifically look at five ways that Jesus transforms and impacts our life as a result of his death. 00:22:52.000 --> 00:22:56.720 And the first one is this he removes our sin and our guilt. 00:22:56.880 --> 00:23:08.400 Um uh we see at the beginning of Jesus' ministry, right before he's baptized, we we say this is his um his his public um coronation, so to speak. 00:23:08.480 --> 00:23:10.480 He goes public with his ministry. 00:23:10.720 --> 00:23:17.519 And um and and so in John 1.29, as Jesus approaches John the Baptist, John the Baptist says this. 00:23:17.599 --> 00:23:21.599 He says, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. 00:23:21.759 --> 00:23:28.720 And so through the death of the cross, Jesus removes our sin and he removes our guilt. 00:23:28.880 --> 00:23:32.559 Um we don't have to deal with that shame anymore. 00:23:32.799 --> 00:23:40.160 Our past sin, our present sin, and our future sin is paid for through the blood of Jesus. 00:23:40.319 --> 00:23:43.599 I love what the psalmist says in 103.12. 00:23:43.759 --> 00:23:48.559 He says he has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west. 00:23:48.720 --> 00:23:52.559 And I love that verse because he doesn't say as far as the north is from the south. 00:23:52.720 --> 00:23:56.160 If you travel north, at some point you're gonna travel south. 00:23:56.240 --> 00:23:59.839 But he says the east is as far as the east is from the west. 00:23:59.920 --> 00:24:03.599 And if you go east, you go east infinity forever. 00:24:03.759 --> 00:24:07.759 And so that's how far he removes our sin and our guilt from us. 00:24:08.079 --> 00:24:14.799 The writer of Hebrews says in 8.12, he says, and I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins. 00:24:14.960 --> 00:24:28.720 And so this is a beautiful truth, an amazing truth, that our sins and our guilt that we carry because of our own transgressions, it's all removed, and we don't have to deal with it anymore. 00:24:29.039 --> 00:24:34.079 Yeah, what a praiseworthy thing just to think about tonight as we reflect on the cross. 00:24:34.160 --> 00:24:39.039 Like that in and in and of itself isn't a miracle from God. 00:24:39.119 --> 00:24:43.279 But really, the cross also uh removes the wrath of God. 00:24:43.440 --> 00:24:48.079 Um this is something that we don't like to talk about a lot of times in our culture and our world today. 00:24:48.240 --> 00:24:55.839 We want to hear about God being a God of love, and he is absolutely a God of love, but God is also a holy and a just God. 00:24:56.240 --> 00:24:59.279 And as a result, he can't stand sin. 00:24:59.599 --> 00:25:06.160 He despises and hates sin and wickedness, and um he he stands vehemently against that. 00:25:06.480 --> 00:25:10.160 And so the wrath of God is poured out towards sin. 00:25:10.720 --> 00:25:17.519 And so what Jesus does when he dies on the cross, he becomes the propitiation of God's wrath. 00:25:17.599 --> 00:25:23.039 He takes the place and he takes upon himself God's wrath upon himself. 00:25:23.200 --> 00:25:26.160 Listen to what 1 John chapter 2, verse 1 and 2 says. 00:25:26.319 --> 00:25:31.680 It says, My little children, I'm writing these things to you so that you may not sin. 00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:37.680 But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:46.960 He is the propitiation or the sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 00:25:47.200 --> 00:25:55.599 God's wrath had to be satisfied, and the only way that that was truly accomplished was through the death of Jesus on the cross. 00:25:55.839 --> 00:26:05.440 He died in our place, he removed the wrath of God, but a sacrifice that removes the wrath and then turns towards us. 00:26:05.599 --> 00:26:08.480 And that's what Russ is going to talk about on the next thing. 00:26:08.960 --> 00:26:10.079 Reconciliation. 00:26:10.240 --> 00:26:13.599 You know, sin separates us from our heavenly Father. 00:26:13.839 --> 00:26:18.799 But when Jesus died on the cross, he provided for our reconciliation. 00:26:19.039 --> 00:26:24.079 He reconciled us with our Father, he brought us back into right relationship with our Heavenly Father. 00:26:24.160 --> 00:26:28.000 And the Apostle Paul speaks to this in Romans 5, verses 10 and 11. 00:26:28.079 --> 00:26:33.599 He says, For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his son. 00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:38.720 Much more now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 00:26:38.880 --> 00:26:47.200 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. 00:26:47.680 --> 00:26:55.279 And so we don't just get out of jail card and then we're sent off to live our lives our own, but we've been reconciled. 00:26:55.359 --> 00:26:57.759 We've been brought back into right relationship with the Father. 00:26:57.920 --> 00:27:05.039 So everything that He has, He provides to us and how we live our lives, and we're empowered. 00:27:05.200 --> 00:27:12.319 Um the Garden of Eden, we see that sin separates Adam and Eve from the Father. 00:27:12.400 --> 00:27:19.519 But but everything that was lost there has been restored, and we are now living in right relationship with God once again. 00:27:19.680 --> 00:27:33.359 And so at his death, we we read that the veil in the temple is torn, it's is it's it's ripped in two, and it symbolizes there there's no longer a separation between us and our heavenly Father. 00:27:33.680 --> 00:27:38.799 Man has been reconciled to God, and so the relationship with God has been restored. 00:27:39.039 --> 00:27:40.000 Amen for that. 00:27:40.160 --> 00:27:41.440 And then redemption. 00:27:41.599 --> 00:27:45.759 We also see that through the cross we have re uh we have redemption. 00:27:45.839 --> 00:27:50.400 And redemption, the word literally there is to buy back something that has been taken. 00:27:50.559 --> 00:28:00.000 If you think of someone that's been kidnapped, some of the kidnapper might demand a ransom of the kidnapper, and that's the way that they buy back the individual. 00:28:00.240 --> 00:28:02.720 Well, that's exactly what Jesus has done on the cross. 00:28:02.799 --> 00:28:08.480 It literally means for him to buy back, it's a liberation of any possession, object, or person. 00:28:08.720 --> 00:28:14.960 In this term, it's using this idea of freeing from chains or slave slavery or prison. 00:28:15.200 --> 00:28:19.839 Jesus, through his death, brought us back to what was rightfully his. 00:28:25.119 --> 00:28:35.519 Matthew chapter 20, verse 28 says, even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. 00:28:35.759 --> 00:28:44.799 So through his death on the cross, he literally buys back his people and brings back what is rightfully his through his death on the cross. 00:28:45.119 --> 00:28:45.599 Amen. 00:28:45.839 --> 00:28:47.119 Thank God for redemption. 00:28:47.279 --> 00:28:51.519 But we also see that that the enemy has been defeated. 00:28:51.599 --> 00:28:56.160 That the power of darkness, the powers of darkness have been defeated. 00:28:56.240 --> 00:29:08.720 And so we see how because of Adam and Eve and humanity's sin against God that takes place in the Garden of Eden, and that Satan wreaks havoc upon humanity. 00:29:09.359 --> 00:29:15.519 But when Jesus dies on the cross, all of the powers of darkness are defeated. 00:29:15.680 --> 00:29:28.720 And as a result, you and I, through redemption, through the removal of God's wrath and the removal of sin and guilt, we see how God gives us victory to live out our faith. 00:29:28.880 --> 00:29:31.759 He gives us victory over the powers of darkness. 00:29:32.079 --> 00:29:33.839 Colossians 3.15 says this. 00:29:41.759 --> 00:29:49.039 And so Satan's only weapon that could ultimately ultimately hurt people is unforgiven sin. 00:29:49.440 --> 00:29:56.240 And so Christ took this weapon away from the enemy and he gives us a victory through Jesus Christ. 00:29:56.400 --> 00:30:01.920 He defeats Satan and He defeats all the powers of darkness. 00:30:02.079 --> 00:30:13.839 And so what we're going to do is we're going to spend some time this evening thanking God for that victory and thanking
