Eyes like fire!

Sometimes God will push us out of comfort zone. He supports us with His Spirit, which guides, prompts and convicts us. When God stretches us and calls us to take that step of faith beyond where we are comfortable, He is right there with us.

Join Elizabeth and Christine as they continue their dive into verse 14, where they discuss the appearance of Jesus Christ, our salvation.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you for tuning in to Coffee with Jesus. My name is Elizabeth Bristol, and Christine Hobbs is here with me again today. So we can continue our conversation about the book of Revelation. If you haven't had a chance to listen to her 10-minute or so podcast about this section, we're going to include that in the show notes so it can we'll make it easy for you to find it. And our goal, like we've said before in studying Revelation, is to learn how we might be ready for Jesus' return. So if you know others that might be interested in this podcast, we would love for you to share it. And today we'll be talking about verses 14 and 15 in chapter one. So, Christine, where would you like to start us off?

SPEAKER_00

Well, as always, let's start with the text first, right? And we'll start in um verse 14. Um, his head and his hair were white like wool, like snow, and his eyes were like a flame of fire.

SPEAKER_01

So what does what do you think this indicates? I love that that it's you know, he's omniscient, right? And we and and this was this really when I got your notes here and I started to think with them, you know, you said, Do you believe Jesus sees all things? And I I don't know if everybody has this. It would be an interesting poll to take. But I remember before I my faith was important to me, I totally believed he saw what I was doing all the time. Like sometimes this surprises me. I'll have this thought like that. Like, like I just sort of always knew that, right? And and then it cracks me up to find out it that it's you know, it's in the scripture. Yeah. And I'm like, oh my word, I knew that without really knowing I knew it, you know. Yeah. I love what you were talking about is having been fortunate enough to be brought to church.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So even though we didn't, we both were raised in the same church and neither one of us really wanted to be there most of the time, but it gives you that foundation. And I was thinking of once again, the promise in Proverbs 22 that says, you know, if you train up a child in the way they should not depart when they're older. And um, I do love that. I'm grateful for that sometimes when I see people not walking there, because of course, of course, I want everyone to be in heaven, so it's that whole thing again.

SPEAKER_00

But I I see such a difference when I speak, you know, when when you're trying to share the gospel with somebody who has never been brought to church, yes, and with somebody who was brought to church but just hasn't been walking in their adult life with the church mindset or or have a church to go to on a regular basis, the difference is is drastic because if they got the the basic um elements of what our faith is about in those early years, they have an easier time, it feels like to me, understanding what you're trying to tell them in terms of salvation and all of that. But if they don't even know a Jesus at all, it's tough to even get them to understand that concept that someone took our place.

SPEAKER_01

Like if you've been brought up, there's even a need for that, right? Because again, it's not our culture, the sacrifice thing, like we talked about last time. And more and more I think this is happening, you know, as we go further. The generation these days don't have what we had with pretty climbing back then.

SPEAKER_00

We're multiple generations out at this point of people not going to church at all. Never mind Christmas and Easter, they just don't go, period.

SPEAKER_01

And you know what? In some sense, I see what you're saying, but also maybe in some ways that could be good because also there's a lot of church hurt, right? Like, you know, with the kids that are raised in church not completely understanding or you know, just the stuff that happens that way, too. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. I just I feel like when I try to speak to somebody who just doesn't know anything, yeah, they may have heard of Jesus, but they know him as a swear word, right? Like right, yeah, right. So I don't know. I just feel like when I try to describe the event of Jesus being crucified on a cross, it is so foreign to them. I can't even get that concept through that it sounds like a myth to them. It doesn't even that's been my experience. Maybe other people have a different experience, but yeah, it's crazy. It's um, but anyway, so his eyes are like a flame of fire. And if we go to Hebrews chapter four, verse three, it actually says, and there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of him whom we must answer, which is basically saying that Jesus sees all, he sees everything, and he's all knowing, and he's everywhere all at once, which again, to tell somebody about that really seems science fiction, and it seems scary, right?

SPEAKER_01

And yet it's really weird because how we know him in our life right now, you know, like um in Bible study yesterday when we were talking about the way he protects us, then through all the stuff that's coming. Um, for those of us that have a relationship with him, he is, you know, he promises to provide, he promises to protect, he pro like that judgment because of Christ does not fall on us. Right.

SPEAKER_00

And so, yeah, so we gotta not forget that too, because I think sometimes people well, this the scripture talks about that there are books and records kept. Yes, and yeah, well, again, we're we're you know, as the other side of it, who's covered by the blood, yes, the Lamb, yes, he took on our sins, so we're cleansed, right? It doesn't mean we're not sinners, we continue to sin, but we're being purified as we walk through this life. But regardless, his his gift of salvation covers us for those who say, I want nothing to do with this person called Jesus Christ, it doesn't cause them not to be seen because his eyes are like flaming fire, he sees all, so he sees all things that we do as believers, but he also sees all things that the unbelievers do too, and the books are kept right on all.

SPEAKER_01

Like picture that, right?

SPEAKER_00

Like he would just bring up almost a movie of what happened and what my motive was and what my what I did and what I mean is not everything we do is with a pure heart and motivation, like we can do some really good things, but maybe we're doing it for our own glory. Maybe it's not done for him. Maybe it's because we're seeking power within a church environment. Just because somebody's in church doesn't mean that they're saved, born again, and working for Christ. They can be in church as an unbeliever. And that's where a lot of church hurt takes place because people go into a church thinking everybody who's sitting in those pews are perfect, good people because they're in church. No, no, they're all sinners, just like everyone else in the world. It's just some of us are clinging to Christ for our peace, our safety, our forgiveness of those sins so that they don't weigh us down. And other people are saying, No, no, I want nothing to do with him, and they're carrying that load all through life.

SPEAKER_01

People know it or not, put in church to be dangerous, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, absolutely. So anybody who's been hurt at a church, just know that that's not Christ. That's not even an example of Christ. That's the wolves and sheep's clothing. We've talked about that. They enter in and they corrupt and they do this. Um, but the the long or the short of it is there'll be a day the judgment takes place because there will be a judgment. And Jesus Christ, with his fiery eyes that have seen everything, will open up the books of our lives, and either we're deemed innocent because of the blood, the plague of death has passed over us because we're covered. We've put our faith in him. Again, we we grow right in that faith, but it doesn't mean we're perfect necessarily. We're trying to be perfected. Or you're you remain an unbeliever, you die, and then the the covering of blood isn't on you, so the books get opened. And when you say, Oh, but I was a good person, I gave to the Cancer Society, I did this, he'll open the books and say, Yes, but you did this, this, this, and this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So someone who has separated themselves from Christ because they've chosen that, and they book their book is open, their their sin will be for them to pay for, right?

SPEAKER_00

Right, because they didn't accept the payment of Christ for that, right?

SPEAKER_01

Where someone who has accepted Christ to pay for their sin will have a book open. And I didn't understand this. A friend of mine was showing me this. That will be the uh reward, right? We will get rewards for what we've done um to build the kingdom, to do what he's called us to do, and we get crowns. I forget which verse that is. We get crowns, and I remember her several, yes, and I thought, um, oh, I don't need a crown. It was a weird false, it was a low pride. It was weird. I'm like, I don't need a crown. And she said, no, no, no. When we're in heaven, we're gonna we give those crowns to him. We lay down our crowns. There's I that song, and um, we'll want to give him as much as we can, right so it reminds me of again the change in what he's done in my heart, where I did use to run from him, and now I want to spend all my time doing things like this, you know, the podcast of reaching out to people to know that he is so incredibly good. Like it's so I think it is easy for some people to be deceived that he's judged, you know, the fiery judgment, the wrath of God thing when he's really incredible once you have a relationship with him.

SPEAKER_00

Right. He doesn't want to judge us. That's why he paid, that's why he came down to earth and suffered.

SPEAKER_01

And just the way, you know, again, I don't know that um, yeah, just yeah, the way he just not just do we have eternal life, but that's already started, you know. Our life is switched here, where there's so much blessing and um just a different way of living than I used to, like a different set of desires.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And um, you know, either you're gonna stand and be judged for your sins as an unbeliever, or you'll stand before God and you'll be judged for your reward. Yeah, you don't get judged for your sins because Christ already paid that fine and you put your faith in that.

SPEAKER_01

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

Your sins. So it's a biggie, but you know, the the fact that his eyes are like fire, you know, people the he lights up what he sees, in other words, right? He can see through anything that fire can see it goes to speak that people think that they can get away in the dark with things. Oh, I can do this at night because nobody's gonna see me, right? Yeah, this is telling us God sees everything, He sees our sins, He sees our every tear. It says He sees every tear and knows.

SPEAKER_01

I love that one. You know, he talks about us so much, he doesn't just see that tear, but he collects them.

SPEAKER_00

It's like he He numbers the hairs on our head, yeah. Like he knows it's giving a description that he knows every detail and even the motives of our heart. Sometimes our motives are pure, sometimes they're not. He knows the difference.

SPEAKER_01

Um about eyes, you know, that his eyes, that scripture. Um, what is it, 2 Chronicles 16, 9, about the eyes of the Lord roam throughout the earth, like he looks for ways to help us, right? So that he may strongly support those whose heart is completely his.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Right. Because he knows it's a struggle. Yeah. He knows this life is a struggle. He that's why he came to earth, so that he we can know that he understands all of the challenges we face. And there's multiple places where we see he wept, yeah, because his heart was broken for how much sin is in the world, and that it's so hard for us to navigate being blinded because we don't see all. He chose to take off his deity and live as a human and pay the price for us, but because he did that, he understands how hard this life is. He he understands what it's like to be that he doesn't let us.

SPEAKER_01

What is that scripture? I always get mad. People say God doesn't give us more than we can handle. Well, that's not exactly right.

SPEAKER_00

That's a that's a falsehood, right?

SPEAKER_01

But he's you know, he says it's um not where he gives us things that are common to man, like we've all struggled, he walks through it with us, he won't leave us, he'll support us, he'll and I do. I know I sort of get excited when I see. I know I've just had this conversation lately with people a lot, you know, avoiding all pain, avoiding anything hard, avoiding, but God wants us to grow and he has these opportunities and lessons for us, but again, it's he's not trying to torture us, he's not trying to um, you know, yeah, to to discipline us, you know, life, right?

SPEAKER_00

We don't see what's coming in the next, and he understands what's coming in the next, and he's more interested in our eternal comfort, yes, than our earthly comfort. And if he knows, okay, you're gonna love the rewards I have for you, if I can just train you up in this area. But how do you train? Like when we go to the gym, sometimes it doesn't feel good, it hurts, our muscles hurt, I'm tired, I'm like, oh, I don't feel like doing this, but it's good for my body to do it, right? Sometimes he brings things into our lives where we think, oh, I don't like this, it doesn't feel good. I want to stay right where I am. But he knows that, oh, I have so much better for you. If you can just learn this lesson, right, and train up and and get those spiritual muscles strong, wait till you see what I have for you. Yeah. You know, so and he gives us his holy spirit. He said, I support you, um, strongly support you. Well, he's he gives us his his spirit, which guides, prompts, convicts. You know, so when we're walking with him and we have his holy spirit in us, yeah, yeah, you know, we we don't have to walk blindly like we would as an unbeliever. No, no, you know, you get that prompting, like, nah, you don't want to do that, right? That's not gonna be good for you, right? And if you listen, you spare yourself some heartache. Sometimes we don't, and and it's like, okay, you're gonna learn the hard way, but I'll let you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, right, yeah. So salvation and rewards. Yeah, so salvation's a gift. We don't have to get cleaned up, right? I mean, God didn't.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's the one thing I I want to stress more than anything because I I don't know if you see this all the time, but you know, sometimes the resistance is well, you know, maybe someday I'll go to church, maybe someday I'll look into this whole Christianity thing. But there's something holding them back because they know they're not, they think that they have to be cleaned up to come to God. And it's it's come as you are to get there. That's the point, right? So it's come as you are, and and Christ does the cleaning. He cleans you up. You don't have to come cleaned up.

SPEAKER_01

We're messy. I don't think you cannot be changed, but that's not the point either, right? You know, it's uh it's another love thing that and there's a lot of those things I feel like I couldn't get on the other side of um when I didn't have a relationship with him, I couldn't understand some things. And as soon as I did have a relationship with him, boy, it just there was instant understanding and a lot of a different perspective, right? His love for me that I didn't understand.

SPEAKER_00

Right. And I think it's it's one of the things that gets flipped so much too. Again, religion versus relationship. Yeah, like there is this sense in some people that, oh, well, I have to earn my salvation because there are verses that do say, you know, um you should be producing good works, right? Like and yes, we we want to be doing good works, but we don't do it from the point of, oh, I'm gonna do this so I can earn my way to heaven. That's already been accomplished, so it's more in regards to okay, I do these things because I want to please the one that gave it all for me. And I want to spread the word.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because you want it for everyone. Once you experience his love, it's hard. I I don't think I can not want it for everyone. Right, right, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Wow. Um, just yeah, before I pray, um anything else that you want to add?

SPEAKER_00

I think that covers it. Um, there's I'm sure there's more that we could talk about. Like again, uh, you know, we're skimming the surface, even being as detailed as we are going through each and every verse. It's still just a tip of the iceberg. So, but we would never get done. So we'll just leave it at that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Wow. Well, Lord, Father, I just thank you that you come with each one of us, even as we, you know, finish recording and we all go our separate ways, that you are you're able to have conversations with each one. And I pray, Father, that wherever we are in this, that you will continue the conversation. You know, like if someone's afraid for some reason, um, that you will speak right directly into that fear, like speak whatever lies the enemies might be attacking us with, that you're you will reveal your truth, right? That you will just again, I don't know, I don't know, for those of us that love sheep, I would love new fresh revelation of how we are like you and how we are to be shepherds. And so I'm just grateful of all the times you tell us not to be afraid in the Bible. Um, because sometimes when we watch the news or we see what's going on in this world, it's hard to hold on to our peace and trust you like we want to. So we do thank you, Lord, that you are our refuge, you're our strength in these times of trouble. And we thank you for all of your many promises to help us, to strengthen us, never to leave us, to provide for us. We thank you that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. And we thank you for this podcast that you are showing us exactly what you mean, and that you are teaching us how we might use our authority in you um to, yeah, just to be prepared for when you come and to help others be the same. Lord, you know we have all have loved ones that that need to know you too. So we ask you for help in that in Jesus' name.

SPEAKER_00

Amen.

SPEAKER_01

And we thank you everyone for joining us. And um yeah, just bless you and and please come back.
