This week, Liam and Raife deep dive into some of the world's most pressing issues - such as; annoying car features, school playground fighting, and all things Car Week. All the while ignoring the fact that Raife's drink changes colour halfway through, and their undying hatred between each other.

Another week. Hello, Liam. I'm worried if you keep getting worse soon you won't be able to get any worse again. No, I'm fine actually, I'm alright. How's your week been? It's been fine. Oh, that's fine. It's been fine. Fine. What have you been up to? All sorts, mate. Anything car related? Got the car cleaned. That's good. Did you clean it yourself? No. Lazy. Took it to a hand car wash not far from me. And I was like, show it up to the hand car wash. You know, in my Mark IV MX5. There's always a bigger fish, Rafe. There's always a bigger fish. McLaren Arturo. But not only did they not care about my car, they also didn't care about the McLaren Arturo. Oh, that's fine. So it's like too much body panels. Yeah. It's much easier when everything's flat. Yeah. My favourite cars are coming as a larder. Yeah. I want to drive a larder. Why? I just think it'd be funny. I don't think it'd be any other purpose. One of my favourite drives we've ever had together was in a Fiat 500. Oh yeah. Is that when I between gears would just slide my foot off the clutch? Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and just let the engine and the gearbox meet. I once drove, what did I drive? It wasn't a larder. Trabant. I once drove. I drove a Trabant through Berlin. Through Berlin. Yeah. That was fun. Was it fun? Was it fun for our car guy evil business in Carnival? Yeah, yeah, yeah. My my ex-girlfriend at the time was not very pleased. Uh, because it's a stank of fuel, incredibly uncomfortable, so cramped in there. That's the human reaction to it. Yeah, but I was having to double double clutch every gear because it was it was a straight cart gearbox for some reason, even though it was like a 50s car, which didn't make much sense to me. Um, but that was great fun. Yeah, I think it's called character building. Yeah. Is that why you like old cars? I I've always loved I've always loved old cars. Always. Is it because of the the the character building that comes along with it? Because it's hard. Yeah. Like I I mentioned him last week indirectly, but my friend Matt, who turns out he actually listens to this. He got he he swapped his seven series, Mint 7 series for Beetle. Which on the surface on the surface is an utterly stupid thing to do. And on paper is an utterly stupid thing to do. There is no world in which that's not a stupid thing to do. But one of my favourite drives or moments I've ever had in a car was when he took me and a few other people out in the car at the same time. In a beetle. Is it a five-seater or is it a four-seater? It's just a bench seat in the back. Which makes it unlimited. Yeah, yeah. For as many as you want. Um and just just driving around like in the rain, almost falling over, going over bumps, and just feeling the wild suspension geometry of that thing doing really simple is hilarious. A new one I have. Right, yeah, yeah. Which is a hilarious car as well. Great drive I had and a newer Beetle is because it's a golf with less weight on the rear, which means it will lift off oversteer. Which I as much as it was fun doing it, I would have much rather have seen it happen. Because that would have been so funny. How was your week? My week was alright. Do anything cool in a car? Did I do anything cool in a car? I didn't do much that interesting in a car, I don't think, this week. Um I was mainly glued to my phone and the news of car stuff because as much as it I may have since a couple of cool cars, I did have um a good appreciation for Gen 1 Lamborghini Galados, and I think they're really pretty now. I haven't driven one, so I won't write anything about that, but I think they look really nice. Oh, you don't like that. I struggle with them. I think they look great now. They look so much of their time. They do look very of their time, and I like the sim there's there's a simplicity to the design, which I really appreciate, but I don't think it's aged well. I think they look good now, but I don't think they've aged well. Do you see what I mean? I think the Gen 1 Galado has now aged well. Like a 360. What's your definition of aging well? I like how you're gonna be like, because I think 360s have aged fucking terribly. I think a 360 Modelner is now a nice looking car. As long as you put the challenge grill in there. Is that your definition of aging well? Yeah, it's a good looking car now. And it wasn't at the time. Senna has technically aged well because it wasn't a good looking car at the time, and I think it is now. And it still looks appalling. It looks quite bad. So has aged well? I think it's aged well because it It's so I don't think I look terrible now. I think they look quite interesting now. Are you checking to see if it's uh checking your watch? I haven't I can't spin it. It's been a while. Um no, it's my definition of aging well is if that car came out now, how shit would it look? And or it never ended up looking bad. Yeah. Because I guess actually something aging well is it it started well and it ends well. Yeah. If your milk aged really well, it would taste really nice next year. Whereas I'm defining it as if the milk tasted bad when I got it, so I left it a couple of years like wine. So I'm saying that the 360 and the Galado aged like wine. Yes. Because they now look nice when they didn't look good to begin with. The 4GT never looked bad. Of 2017 fame. Oh, okay. No, fine. Could come out tomorrow. And it's a it's a 10, 11-year-old car, though. 100%. That's fair. Do you know what I mean? But things like the Ferrari 550. Oh, that is 10 years old, isn't it? Yeah. That's a decade old that's. That is impressive. No, that's a great example. To me, that's a car that's aged well. Very, very well. Trying to think of another example that's that good, but that might be the peak. Because that looks if that was now pitted against a Valkyrie, let's say it had more power. Visually, I don't think it's. The only thing you could you could tell that made it an older car was the l is the even though it had more of it than any other car did at the time, but negative space. Yeah. Buttresses with the holes through them. Whereas Valkyrie is all bloody holes. Yes, and the the fuser is big, but not as big as they are now. No, no. That's the only it's just proportions. You know what? If it came out now, I'd say it's probably one of the best looking cars of that type. Yeah, it would look really great. It didn't look too stupid. Yeah. I actually think that has also edge like wine for me as well, because I think it looks so good now. And I remember when it came out and I was like, the front is alright and the rear I hated. Yeah, same actually. Yeah. Yeah, I just the way it thinned out, I liked how the 4GT had this massive rear end. Like it had a proper the the biggest part that goes. Yeah. O5 GT4T. Yeah. Any weird thing in the middle. All before. The way the whole rear was so big and so flat, I just thought it would look mean and muscly, and this didn't look mean and muscly, it looked sleek and quick. Um but it still looks sleek and quick, but now it just looks unbelievably good. Yeah. And it just it just always did. Always did. Fine. Square steering wheel. Aged w don't say that. Yeah, that is the catch. What is your favourite steering wheel? Manufactured. Manufactured you give an example. Uh the personal ones. The personal ones. Yeah, there's a brand called personal. Oh. Is it the one with the crown? Yes. Yes. Okay, fine. Like in my TVR has a personal wheel. And Lotus use personal wheels. So that's basically just a wheel. A steering wheel. That is literally a circle. Stop faffing about with sti Stop Where you going with that? Why do people Why why do why? Why do people feel the need to keep pissing about with their steering wheels? Just put a steering wheel on it. I do I like design and I think it's important that cars have an interesting design and that What's wrong with the design of a of a steering wheel? It's perfect. It's exactly what it needs to be. Porsche steering wheels are my favourite. Wow. Because because they're they're the most telling of the brand, they can have consistent design language across all the. They are nice and small. They are small, they are round. If you get a full leather one, they are thin enough. Yeah. You could probably go thinner, but not normally necessarily on a let's say a GT car. Let's specify more. The other thing I'll give it to them on the non-GT cars is where the heated steering wheel button is on them. Yeah. Which which, for those who don't know, the steering wheel on the three spokes, they each have a cutout hole. And on the bottom one, if you put your finger through the hole and click the back of the steering wheel, it turns on the heated steering wheel. And as much as I hate heated steering wheels, I would put them on so I could press the button.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Because do you hate the heat? Do you like heated steering wheels? No. No, neither. It makes my hands feel funny. To me, a heated steering wheel feels like someone else has been using it for an hour. Yes, exactly. Would you like to have someone sit in your car before you get in it? Yeah, that's what heated seats feel like to me. They also make me feel like I'm wet myself. Only because I, you know, occasionally have. So you just can't discern anymore. No. Trauma. Trauma. Trauma. Oh no, not again. Oh no, alright, fine. Just start crying. And someone's like, Are you are you good? He's like, piss my so embarrassed. Have you actually? And you're like, yeah, it's so warm down there. It's like I turn on your heated seat. Yeah, I know. Yeah, I just want to make you just want to make you feel really bad. Um Yeah, I know. Heated steering wheels though are the the are the worst that I hate them. No, the word. So many cars I've driven. You turn and where it I I will use it if it is bitterly cold. Fine. And there's so many cars I've driven where I've turned all uh turned on the heated steering wheel. And only the two sides of the wheel have gotten hot, but the top and the bottom aren't. And it's so cold. And then you feed the wheel through your hands, and you can feel little tornadoes forming in the bottom in the palms of your hand. It just it just ah, it's horrible. I hate it. Got any other car features you don't like? Most of them, yeah. Go name one if you can. I I'm not gonna say lane keep assist because that's so incredibly obvious. And also just slightly out of our control now. This is more Yeah, it's the law. Like it's the law now. Yeah. So yeah, it annoys me and speed limited. I don't know if there's any particular features that I really dislike, but I know I don't I can't think of features themselves, but I can think of moments where I've done something that really annoyed me. I drove I was in Portugal and I drove what was at the time the brand new BMW i5 M50. Oh, cool. Okay. And it was it was, I don't know how they got it, it was brand new, like press hadn't driven it yet. And I was driving around with with a in a meet with a mutual friend of ours, and we did launch control. And what the uh Boffins at BMW had decided to do was to make launch control feel exciting in this electric car. Is when you put your foot on the brake and floor the throttle, rather than just the car saying, Okay, you can launch it now, it made the car vibrate the whole car, as if it was about to like a rocket about to fucking but also it was so I remember I just I didn't even launch it. I took my foot off the throttle and went fucking Jesus, what's all that about and just kept driving. No, just you don't deserve it. No, literally, it really annoyed me. He brought it just to the point, yeah, let it go. Yeah, it really, really, really pissed me off. Yeah, don't do that, don't fake things. My two ideas that I was gonna bounce back at you are both BW as well. Wow, one of them isn't just BW, but annoys the hell out of famously BW, which is double pull door handles, really pisses me off. Double pull how? What pull once unlocked, pull again. Yeah, uh just let if I'm opening it from the inside, let me open the door. I don't dump I don't want to do that. Also, BW door handles, I know, and it annoys the hell out of me.
SPEAKER_00Lanky persisters every car, and that annoys the hell out of us too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but no, it really annoys me. Old Porsches do it. Oh like 997s and stuff do it, probably nine six and all that stuff. That annoys me. I I annoys the hell out of it, really, really annoys me. I was in a three series today, and twice I went to just open the door and just like and then by that point I had to pull it twice again anyway. Oh, I really and also they're not well designed door handle, well enough designed door handles to make that an easy process. They're quite swoopy, they sort of come out, they they designed it so it comes up with the door, and then oh the door handle just just slight bend out just to slip your fingers in. Um and I'm sure BW loves it, and I don't. It annoys me often. I feel like this annoys you, Wave. It really does. The other one was the the concept was really nice, and I love hands ammo. Say no more! Was it the no it wasn't the IX, what was it called? It was a seven series, wasn't it? No, no, no, it was the big thing that you played a drum with. Um iX. IX, yeah. Um which for context was just hollow inside, so you literally played like a drum. If you if you knocked the bodywork above the rear wheel on that big piece of unibody that goes sort of over the top. You just knock it just with the with your knock, it just goes dong. Only when it chill. But it's literally like a a gong from the Vatican, it was incredible. But they had this hand zimmer thing where there's like four or five different moods, I think they called them. And if you accelerate, it plays like this this sound that is made by hand zimmer. Yeah. And so you would pull out of a junction and go, I'm gonna go for it in my electric car, because that's the only point of them if you're gonna do anything dynamic. Um, and they go, and it really annoyed me. I just found it like sort of uncomfortable and um what's the best way of putting it? Unnecessary. Unnecessary, thank you. Not helpful. Also, it was never loud enough. I don't like salsa, but it didn't have salsa. I want spicy salsa. Right, okay, fine. So you hate the sound, but if you have the sound, you want the sound to be louder. And not to sound like it's happening somewhere in the car. Right, okay, fine, fine. Like it's just going. Like what you slow down and it stops, and you go, what was that? You think it was a wheelbearing noise or something. I don't know, but you just feel like you're being haunted in the car. Oh, massively, massively. Haunting like any electric car's reversing sound, or slow speed sound. The song of the dead, yeah. Which just sounds like you're being taken by an alien. Yeah, it does sound like being beamed up, doesn't it?
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_01News. News. There's been a lot of it. Yeah, so that is what my week has mainly consisted of is news. News. I mean, that's what's been on my mind most of this week. Because my god, it's been one we it really was a Monterey Car Week, wasn't it? Yes, yes, it was. It was Monterey Car Week. It was it was that's what happened, yeah. Which we did it last last podcast we recorded last Thursday and all the big things happening Friday. Yeah. Apart from Kernig Zeg CCGT1, which did come out on Thursday. What did you think of the CCGT one, Ruth? Um track only, isn't it? No. What? Not track only. Oh, that completely changes my road car. I was about to say I think it's really cool, and I love the the CC 80 from the day. Oh, I see what you mean. Yep. So this recreation of it with the Flyby Wire gearbox and all this stuff is very exciting, very cool because I think all the heritage stuff that they're coming out with, all the brands I like. It feels a bit cheap and a bit of a shame because there isn't as much new stuff as it feels like there is recreations of old stuff. However, the old times we can confirm were better. Um so having an occasional Valkyrie come out and stuff is fine, but I'll absolutely take some of the stuff we're going to talk about that are harkening back to the good old days because I think we've now passed them. Done. So cool. Too late, kids. If you were born last week, then bro missed everything. Yeah, well, maybe they'll get another one and maybe they'll be recreating Taycans in the future, going That was the good old days. When when that massive solar flare happens and we lose all technology and we have to start from the beginning. I hope they don't start with a Taycan. That would be a show. Well, Taikan has eShift now. Yeah, I'm Did you hear about that? Yeah, I did. And I I'm I don't want to hate on it as much as my heart wants me to, because it's I'm basically bitter that we're losing a thing that we were going to lose anyway. I don't want to hate on it at all because I I have driven a few taekans and I really quite like how they drive. They are and they handle really flat, uh they're just obviously bloody weighty. I was gonna say the only catch of it is you go around a corner at speeds that don't feel possible for what it is. No. One because the floor-mounted batteries are incredibly low centre of mat. Um but you do all of that and you go, Wow, this car like it feels light, it feels light because everything's so low, and then you go on the brakes and you go about 50 yards longer. And the car starts to slide, you realise, oh, it'll keep doing this forever. Um but I feel like there were some moments where I that felt that car felt so athletic, and I was like, Oh, all I want to be doing right now is just pulling through gears.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01I feel like that could add a lot to the experience at a tiger, and that'd be really cool. And we sat in an Ionic 6N. What did we sit in? We did, we did sit in an Ionic 6N at just for the speed. Like it had a rev gauge and it revved and it did all this. It's obviously not real. And then you have the whole argument which we I think had in that car probably when there was people waiting outside to get in the car and we were just having a shouting. All they can hear is just Well, we were just discussing who was right and who was wrong, basically. The conversation we were having was Yes, it's a good thing, because it's going to be more engaging and it's going to be more fun. There is no way it's not gonna be more fun not pulling a gear. I love simulators, which is literally fake cars, let alone fake gears. I've only got wheels on the ones I enjoy. But is the point of the sound because it's coming from an engine, not just for the sound? I will answer your point with a point. Okay. A lot of people say about sim racing when people make fun of them, like it's just pretend, a lot of people say the cars aren't real, but the racing's real. So and I completely agree with that. So if you look at it the same way from this angle, the gears aren't there, but the enjoyment is real, but the feeling you get from it is real. Could you say that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Is it like VR golf?
SPEAKER_01VR VR Golf.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You don't actually get the wind in your hair. You don't actually achieve anything, but you had a great time with your powers. I feel like the barrier of realism is a bit further forwards with VR Golf. Because once you've hit the ball, then that's you've hit the ball. You're still driving a car. Yeah, and it still has physics. Yeah. Like, it is still tires and it is still. I mean, if it's And with the software, you've got a power band, you've got a limiter you can hit as well. Is it it does the problem then come down to not to the driving experience but the the the impressiveness of the car? So Lexus LFA is amazing because of its engine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We won't have that anymore. We'll have them they had the best tech, they had the best coders and sound recorders and all this stuff, which is just doesn't it's still impressive, but impressive in a different way, that doesn't necessarily go down in car guy history like motorsport and thrills, and there is absolutely nothing about why we love a T VR that relates to Ionic 6, and they are com they they are completely different reasons for loving something. Expand. Fast cars. If you like fast cars, that's the marijuana to enter. That sort of time. Nonetheless, C T G T one. So it is a road car. It is road legal. Great. You can get a track pack that can go on it, which will give you slick tires as well as the road tires. And air jacks. That's cool. Air jacks. Which is so dumb. Yeah, so dumb and cool and such a new technology. Yeah, that is. Well, yeah. That my granddad had on his, I think it was an Austin six in the nineteen fifty. Yeah, it's nice that they've put this raised carb thing on a road car. I can't believe it's road road going. Yeah, it is, yeah. Well funny idea. What's the point of the game? They've taken the the the the the light speed transmission, they call it, isn't it? Yeah. The nine speed gearbox. And they've given it like a sequential version. Really tool stick? Really tool stick. Bang backwards and forwards through gears. Does the interior have the stupid circle somehow, visually? I don't think so. Not at all. Just wondering if they're going to go. That would have been really cool, to be fair. But no, it's got this thing, but there's also a little dial, because obviously with the with the the LST, they've done a manual version. You can decide between sequential. No, hang on, let me get this right. Automatic, little dial, as you twist it, automatic, sequential, manual, and reverse. ASMR as you go through the I saw that pop up and I just never looked into it. Cool, right? ASMR. Yeah. So oh my god, it's literally my THATA shifter, my shifter on my sim. Yeah. Flick something and it's sequential. And they've taken this tech that's been around since 20, whatever, and put it in a car with a real gearbox. That's cool. Wow, that's so cool. So cool. It almost feels silly simple, doesn't it? It doesn't it, yeah. Because it's like, oh yeah, it's a it's a you change gears with the paddles, you just instead of choosing instead of turning the brain up one now, you go just go to two, which you could have done in the old BWs that have gear locks. Yeah, I remember that. So it's just that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But they've just gone, why haven't we done that? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm sure there's a lot more to it. There's a reason why it's such a big deal. But I just it almost feels like it could have been done sooner. But I guess why would we have? Especially when there are brands bringing back some manuals. Yeah. I love it. I think it's really cool. I'd still have a CCA 50 instead. Same. I gave you such a beautiful segue. It was right there for the taking. Was it? Yeah. Fuck, what did I what did I miss? Rewind. Especially as so many brands are bringing back the manual. Yes, Ray! They are! Thank you so much for the beautiful segue. That's absolutely fine. Holy manual! We know how the CEO of the Segway died. I remember you telling me. And I still think it's absolute horseshape. Do you know? Do you know this camera? This this is a true fact, by the way. 100% true. The CEO of the Segway died when he was, I think he purchased the company of the original owner. And he died when he went to prove how good he was at Segway to stop and instead didn't stop and fell off a cliff. That's true. It's like these windows are so strong in this skyscraper. Which I also think happened. Yeah. Anyway. Yes, holy manual car. Holy manual car. There's been some. Also, holy car. I mean, take manual out of the equation. It's still like mental. Mental. Mental. Can we talk about it? Which one? Which one? That's so good. Oh, there's a new manual supercar. Which one? Ah. Yes, I can. It was like ten years ago. Which one do you want to take and I'll take a different one? Um, you're gonna know more about both. Oh. Because I left you down to research. Yeah, true. Yeah. But I'm actually gonna take the S1. Okay. Because I think the information about the Baron is much more very you know a bit more about it, you're a bit more passionate on that side. But we'll come back to that. Okay. And please continue to jump in because I don't know much facts. Fine. I just know that I was so giddy. So we talked about the S1LM three weeks ago. Happy One Month podcast, by the way. Oh, we should quit. Um have a month off. Stressful. Bits too much work for me, I'm afraid. Um they came up with that, and it was rolling chassis and everything and all this stuff, and it was a really cool idea, and they harched it back to the F1. Then they've come up with this S1. It's weird they've come out in this order, but we had so many assumptions of what they would do, what we wanted them to do, and what was actually probably likely. And what was probably likely was a very similar thing to the S1, but without a wing. Yeah. Basically. I literally thought it was gonna be S1LM with the LM bits off and the same. It is beautiful. It is so beautiful. For our video watchers, we're just gonna put loads of pictures on the screen because if you haven't seen it, oh my god. One of the main things that isn't the most important part of the car, but one of the things that's so important to prove that they did it so right is the wheels. Yeah. I don't remember if we spoke about it in the podcast in person, but we spoke about the wheels and we're like, they're probably gonna do this, they'll probably do this, probably do this. We're kind of nervous about it. Yeah. And they did it so beyond perfectly more than that. I'd probably be nervous about it. How dare we be nervous? How dare we doubt that team of people? Unreal. Perfect. I saw one of them in a cafe the other day, by the way. Anyway. What, McLaren F1? No. Gordon Murray worker. Um, that makes a bit more sense. We're in a lanyard and a t-shirt, and I was like, I I would can't do the things I want to do. That's man in public. It is it is a beautiful car. I struggle with one thing about the SM uh S1. Two. We'll call it two. Okay. One and a half. We'll call it one and a half. If one of them's price, get over it. No, it's not price because it just that's life. Um the first thing I struggle with, is the only visual thing I struggle with on that car is the tail lights. Yes. I actually I will agree with you on that because uh they feel like they've followed a design language that doesn't exist. Yes, anywhere. Even in their other branding, I don't think. Only in the S1LM is it the same, obviously. But you could have justified for calling for a race car. Yeah, I think so. But the the thing about the S1LM that's so the or the S1, sorry, that's so beautiful is how simple everything is. Everything. But the rear lights are like slats out of the back. Which doesn't really match the shaped by air look that it has. Yeah, and the grace of everything else. Do you know what I mean? I didn't think you could get an F1 to look better. No. And that sounds silly because obviously there's better-looking cars than an F1. Oh god, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I didn't think there was that, that design language, that idea, that could be a lot of things. Exactly that better. Better. There was no resto mod version I could think of that would go, oh, if you did that, it'd be better. Yeah, no. And I I think it is. Yeah, I think so, genuinely. No, it's not a good thing. But I just realized rather rather than slats, either have bloody four circles or four half, half and half circles. Like all T50s, split down or I think it's split down the middle. It is. And that would fix it. Other than that, the only other thing I struggle with is that they're making 64 of them, which is exactly how many F1s they're gonna make. Yes. I've always thought up until recently, when we were chatting, that the people who designed the F1, other than McLaren, but they were kind of like they've moved on, they're doing their own thing. Yeah. Was on board. I thought this was so above board that it was like fine. And they kind of the fact it was getting closer and closer and closer to it to me was just like, oh, everyone has seen the T50 that was questioning it. Now everyone's kind of like, yeah, if you wanted to make another F1, go for it. And you told me, no, no, so the guy that I I don't have all the information on this as in how it where people stand in terms of like intellectual property and stuff like that, or if there is any. But I know that the man who penned the F1 originally, uh, a guy called Peter Stevens, who's designed lots of other Is he British? He is British Stevens. Yeah, very British man. Um he's designed lots of other really cool stuff and also just significant stuff rather than you know crazy. Um he doesn't much like or go on where he's up to. I don't want to pass judgment. I think he still designs. Okay. I uh I don't think he's in the car or supercar world. I think he's more into the sort of more normal stuff. Um it's probably where the money is, to be fair. But I'm not passing judgment on who's right and who's wrong at all. I don't want to. But there aren't many Gordon Murray haters out there. No. And every time you see a new post from Gordon Murray, especially if it's revealing a new car, you can almost hear the footsteps as he gets closer to that comment section on Instagram. It is and people now just tag him. They're just like, Hey! Ps! Gordon Murray, what are you gonna say about this? And it's he gets kind of petty with it sometimes as well. Gordon Murray posted on their Instagram like the teaser picture for the S1, which is that cloak with a pretty woman standing next to it. You couldn't see the car.
SPEAKER_00Never got that bit.
SPEAKER_01Move on. Yeah. He someone someone commented on it saying, Oh, sick. And Peter Stevers comment replied to that comment just saying, Well, I I hope you feel better soon, or something like that. It's like he just How old is this man? I think he's I think he's in his 60s, 70s now, something like that. Um It's just I I actually think it's really refreshing to see. So many manufacturers just so many manufacturers don't get don't sort of I don't know They just build a bad car and then they upset about it, and then they build a bad car, take a load of motoring journalists to the Transition. So I think it's nice to see a little bit of not bad blood, I wouldn't call it bad blood at all. School school playground fighting. Yeah, just pulling on pigtails. Do you know what I mean? I it's nice to see that in the car world because so many manufacturers just make a car and that's that. And they made the car, everyone goes, Oh, that's amazing! And then they just that, and then that's it. It's nice to see a little bit, especially from the people that know as well. Well, we had that with Nichols, didn't we, as well? Yeah, Nichols Wow, yeah, and Gordon Murray. Well, Gordon Murray is really probably one of the our favourite manufacturers, safe to say. Oh, 100%. Um has been a few school fights. He has a little bit. Yeah, but I think that's probably why it's so charming. When was the last time you saw a one of the best cars in history that didn't have some weird fight story? Yeah, exactly. Because all the ones in history did. I mean, the thing with the uh with Gordon Murray and Steve Nichols was that they they fight over who designed, I think it was the MP44. MP44. Um Watch was one of the most successful Formula One race cars ever, and most likely the most famous. Yeah, probably Marlborough McLaren. And that was a little bit more in bad blood. I didn't I didn't like the way that was going occasionally in just things I'd hear in interviews and stuff like that. But other than that, just a little bit of jabbing every now and then, I quite like it. But I also do like seeing manufacturers being friends like Christopher Königsak, Mate Remack. That video online of him, those two, and who else was there? Was it just them two? It was Mate Remack, Christopher Königsak and Rob Dickinson off of singing, yeah. Yeah. Um he was an awesome musician. What's my name? He he made his money in music, yeah. And then well he didn't actually make all his money in music. Well, he made it money in music to buy a 9-11, cut it up, built it up to what he always dreamed of, I believe, with a few mates. And then someone went on that. He said I can make one for you much better. And they gave him a lot of money, and now we have Singer, which was the central feature of the biggest car event in the world. I'm such a chill guy. Yeah. Such a chill guy, and I do recommend it as well, even though it's not really part of his life anymore. Go and listen to Heal by Catherine Wheel. What a tune. Massive tune. Oh, it's so good. I wish he still did it now and then, but hey, he's a good thing. I wonder if he does. I wonder if he does. I mean, musicians never probably put down their especially because he didn't fall out of love with it necessarily. He just fell in love with something else and made a lot of money. Yeah. So it's fun seeing people in the comment sections of some of his old acoustic songs. Yeah. Going, Rob, wherever you are now. I hope you're doing well. It's like, oh, he's doing. He's okay. No, he's he's a lot more famous now. The CEO of a very, very popular car company. You're doing alright. Imagine just sending the wiki as a reply link. Yeah. I have to do that. Google him. Just reply with Google him. We'll tell you he's doing just fine. Um, so yes, that was S1. Any more to say on S1? So it's a great car. No. Uh it revs to 12,800 or something now. 12.4 at 10. 12.4. Engine was bought out for S1LM to 4.3 litres, I want to say. So I'm excited to hear that and see about that and all that jazz. Yeah. Worried it's going to feel too highly strung now, which sounds insane. We'll see it driving around. I mean, locally to us is a lot of Gordon Murray centres. We've got the one in Windowsham and the one at Dunsford. Yeah. And the one in Windows. And a few customers around us as well. So stay hopeful that one of the more than the uh GT Le Mon GT.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Lamon GTR. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Whatever. Everyone forgot about the bloody car, man. It's such a shame. That's gonna be the one to buy, I guarantee you. People are like, oh, they only made 25 at it. When did this happen? How many years before you think it's gonna be worth more than an S1 at some point? Yeah, I think it will be. Yeah. Okay, we'll shake on it. How long in advance? How far in the future? Well, it's gonna be it's gotta be a 10-year thing. Ten year. In 10 years, tenner. Yep. Alright. Cool. Or 24 quid. I don't mind if it's S1 or S1LM unless you think one of them will be. Oh, the S1. Just S1. S1 LM will be worth more. S1 LM will be worth more. S1 will be worth more than a Lamont GTR. Okay. Cool it. Interesting. Um Interesting. Are you gonna stick with that when you realise I made 64 S1s and 24 Le Monde GTR? Okay. Yeah, yeah. It just made less of a bad car. Um it's just T50 without the fan. Yeah. And a uh stress member engine, I think, or hard-mounted engine. And the S1 is bored out and looks like an F1. Yeah, perfect. This could be real interesting. Yeah, okay. Interesting. Alright. Right, let's move on. What else happened in Carweekly? McLaren have given the world a manual supercar. I cannot believe it. Kind of. Oh. So I managed to watch the videos as they came out. The launch actually happened the day before. So it would have happened on the Thursday. But yeah, Friday, one o'clock, last Friday. Uh I watched the launch video. I don't know what I was expecting. I was like, I knew it was gonna be a manual. They'd already teased that much. And we we knew it was gonna be a manual, we knew it was reminiscent of their first car. Or at least we had a feeling it was gonna be reminiscent of it. Yeah, because in the launch, in the teaser videos they they included Bruce McLaren. Which I was expecting then them to just make a one-off something with a manual gearbox. Yeah. And but it wasn't gonna be any more than that. And also it was just gonna be in the same vein. Yeah. Renault 5, Renault 4, all that stuff, Capri. It'd be like, look, we're using the the idea of what it meant at the time. Yeah. No more than that I had expectation for. And unfortunately that's just because of McLaren's cars, what they make now. It just wasn't suitable of the sort of excitement that the original car gave. McLaren's cars now share no heritage apart from the occasional MSO speedy kiwi logo on some stuff. They look great, but you know. Um but then I watched the launch mate. It's I I'm a huge fan of cars from The 60s. The 60s. Um and it looks so similar to the M6 GT. Like what I said was my car of the show. Yes. At Fest of the Speed. Was the newly restored one or rebuilt one. And it's it it looks like it. And is I can't believe it. I'm so beside myself. They're gonna make apparently 500. But if they're gonna look like that is very unclear. At the moment, that MC, and whatever you see at the bottom of the screen for the people watching, and if you're not watching, then uh why not watch? Um that technically is a concept car. Okay, so that's maybe not exactly what they're gonna look like. I hope it stays like that. Watching the interviews from start to finish with the McLaren's chief design director. At the start, in the first interview he did, he was going, Look, this isn't what future McLaren's are gonna look like. This is just what this car's probably gonna look like. And then at the last interview we did, people are like, So is this what future McLaren's will look like? And he was like, I don't know, man. Really? Because everyone had gone, oh my god! This just credit cards. Do you know how much Do you know how much it is? There'll be a lot. Yeah, but it hasn't been said, is it? There hasn't been there's speculation. There's 500 of them. Yeah, it's a decent amount. Like it's it's I doubt this is millions and millions of pounds when there's 500 of them. Yeah. Which is incredible because they've developed a manual gearbox. So is this the only placement of this manual gearbox then? No. Cool. That's that's probably not their manual gearbox. They probably I they've probably got it from Ricardo under the colour. Hopefully, not the same place they get T50 gearboxes from. Which is, I think, extract. Let's stay hopeful. Um but it's beautiful. Yeah. And a lovely heartback, and they've done an incredibly good job. I can't believe it looks like that. It looks amazing. And a great jab at Ferrari as well in the launch video because they went, and it comes with an authentic manual gearbox as opposed to a manual fly-by-wire, flappy, floppy piece of shit, is what I think McLaren were implying. Well, this is we're at the point where we've done the turning point probably around 2018-19 where manual wasn't normality, and you'd have to spec a manual if you wanted a manual and all this stuff. And it was stuff and now it cost more than a lot of people. It's gonna have to we've probably got a few years, but it'll be like this is an actual manual gearbox. Yeah, yeah. I wonder what I wonder what the words are gonna come up with for different kinds of manual. There'll be different types of fly-by-wire manual. Yeah. Portugal of patented one. It's three that's three words. We'll definitely cut it down to one. Yeah. Which means I wonder what it would be. Yeah, that'd be cool. Yeah. That'd be cool. So yeah, other than that, very quickly on the rest of the carving stuff, spiker. Yep. Our back. And look like a spiker. The new car looks like a spiker. Uh it's as they left it, pretty much, which I guess, you know, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Start as they meant to go with it. Answer the question we had about Ultimate Last. Yep, cool. V8 as well. No. Audi V8. Cool. Yeah, all good. And Porsche Sundervench lads have been going mental again with the flak banner. With the 991.2 GT2RS flat nose. Cool, man. Sure. One-off. Complete one-off. Yeah. I mean, three speed so they did a few years ago. I thought they were allowed to do it. Yeah, why not? No, but Sunavench, someone's paid them a lot of money and Porsche would be like. Lots of money. They would have to develop that car independently. There was that car was wearing camouflage going around the Nebug Ring. They have to do that independently. But yeah. I mean messing with the front end of a Porsche. Yeah. Take off. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, car week was crazy, looking at all the footage. We'll we've got to get there at some point. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. It's probably up. If we have to camp, put a tent up in one of the lay bars along this side. Yeah. If I've got a if I can't rent it because the cars are too expensive, I'll buy something for a thousand dollars and sleep in it. Yeah, actually. I sleep in the boot of a saloon car. Screw it. I'll find a way. So yeah. No amazing. Amazing news. Holy shit. I've been thinking about it constantly since they all came out. There's one more thing I want to talk about Car Week. Do it. Because I want to talk about this maybe more in depth when we have more time. Yeah. Which is the auctions. That in noise was unbelievable. It was quite a noise, wasn't it? Yeah. You're welcome. I'm glad you stuck it out. I think you noticed halfway through. This is weird. Yeah, I just kept going. There's. I don't want to. Right, let me let me lead this. You're gonna piss me off. I'm not gonna piss you off. I'm actually just gonna tell you something interesting. Oh, okay, fine. But you have to bear with me through the very first sentence. Okay. The Ferrari Luce sold for $40 million. Which is obviously insane and unreasonable because the Luce is not worth $40 million. We've chatted about it and about the fact that hey, buying the Ferrari Luce first chassis, a car that wasn't necessarily loved for Unbelievable amount of money means that you're Ferrari's favourite person. But I have looked into the person I found him really interesting. Do you know who did it? Herbie Herbie is his nickname. Herbert Wottum. What's I can't pronounce it. This is what I was checking earlier. Wait, ready for this? Oh, Wertheim. Wertheim! Wertheim! Wertheim has a thumb in them. Thumb in it. A T-H-E-I-M in it. I don't know. Wertheim, yeah. Which makes sense that it sounds quite German because he was born in Pennsylvania, USA. What's is it Pennsylvania Dutch? Is that what they call it? I don't oh no, that's Amish people. No, no, that's Amish people. Completely disregard what I just said. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Nah man. Um carry on, carry on, carry on. What a tit. He yeah, I just I just I saw about him because someone put up billionaire buys thingy. Yeah, with his red suit. I saw that. One, he seems like a really fun person because a lot of these people that do these auctions disappear into night, they've got their Ferrari allocations for life now. Yeah, yeah. Happy days. He I think his intentions weren't just Ferrari. Okay. He has donated hundreds and hundreds of million pounds to charity. Does that not also include the SP3 that went for 26 mil last year? Potentially, yeah. I'm pretty sure he bought that as well. Yeah. He is a charity-driven man. I've got some notes here of some $100 million in 2026 to Baptist Health South Florida. Wow. £100 million to University of Florida, 65 million to Florida State. 50 million to University of California. Um, 50 plus million to Florida International University, 50 million to Florida and University of Florida Engineering. There's tax breaks that are involved with these things. Yes. But so he's not actually spending as much money as it seems, but he is still spending a lot of money. Where did you get his money from? I don't know. Well. Oh, he's putting on his glasses. Well. Oh no. He's about to school us. You wear glasses? Yes, I do wear glasses. Because that's where I was going to say he's got his money, but alright. You're wearing glasses. Yeah. I'm wearing glasses now. Cool. And your eyes don't burn when you look at the sun. In the 60s, this man invented, I believe, and I'm going to have to double check the case. If you're going to tell me he invented sunglasses, I'm going to smack you round your tiny head. He invented an ultraviolet dye that can go into plastics to be able to make glasses so your eyes don't burn in the sun. Is that it? And made he's he's worth 4.6 billion now. So he it worked. To be a little bit more specific, Dr. Herbie, as I'll name him. Dr. Herbie's humanizing him invented ultraviolet light absorbing dye formulas for plastic Orthlamic. Othalam Othlamic aka eyeglass. Um in the late 1960s, the breakthrough helped block harmful UV rays that cause cataracts and rental retinal deterioration. Bloody hell. Protecting millions of people from determinative eye diseases. So he's saved a load of people from eye diseases, and he's donated how much to charity overall. Hundreds of millions, hundreds and hundreds of millions. Wow. I just thought that was quite charming because normally they disappear into the night, and he was wearing this really bold suit, and I saw the photo of it in front of his white on white Ferraro Luce Sassy Zero. Yeah. And I thought, I want to find out about him. One, even when you Google him, it says his full name, but in brackets in the middle it says Herbie. So that means he is famously gone by a fun name. And I just thought, what a charming, charming man. To be fair, he didn't my argument for it would be everyone's say, everyone's putting pictures of um David Lee's white 250 GTO next to the white Lucha and going, how is this worth 38 million and this worth 40? When you're spending that much money with Ferrari, especially for charity, the car is a thank you note. Yeah, yeah. 100%. 100%. It's not that's not what he's buying. You know what I found today? What did you find? You can pay £9.99 a month to be on the, and I'll get the name of it slightly wrong, the Hot Wheels, I'm gonna call it red list. Something like that. It basically means you can pay a monthly subscription to get the opportunity to buy certain Hot Wheels. Everyone is paid to win. Right. And it's Frori. So the purpose of it is he will be Frori's top customer forever. I mean he probably already was up there. Or the I he probably I'm sure there's people in the the behind the curtains somewhere, you know, who are really the people who buy the one-off commissions as well. Oh yeah, they've got to exist somewhere, right? Yeah, yeah. But he'll be amongst the I mean he's the most charitable customer, my god. Oh yeah. But I just I just like there there was at least some other more obvious intentions, and also what an interesting man to have been an inventor. Yeah, that's a good one. An inventor. I was like four four point six billion pound net worth inventor buys Ferrari Luce. I was like, he's an inventor. That's cool. He's not just stock trader buys Luce, yeah, yeah. Inventor. And I don't think you get many inventors nowadays. No. Unless you're an AI prompter. Which is it's about as inventive as our generation gets. Um What's your opinion on monthly subscriptions for car features? Oh, that's a very good question. Oh, yeah. Camera's just jumped in. Yeah, thank you, camera. And asked, what's our opinion of monthly subscriptions on car features? When we talked about features that annoy you earlier, I think that made me so livid in life and existence that I've deleted it from my day-to-day life. I don't think about it, and I don't think about it ever. Because the idea We're gonna end this on such an angry note. It makes me so angry that I have heating elements in my seats. That they're gonna build the seats and the steering wheel with the heating elements, put them into the car you've bought, and then ask for money to use them. I know Ziggy, isn't it a pain in the ass? That why it's in the car. I'm not gonna give you money to use something I own. I think what's I get it for things like subscriptions to there's some software things you can get subscriptions to. This is what I was gonna say. That's a bit different. When it's like, for example, YouTube in the EV3. Yeah, yeah. That probably has some sort of agreement where they have to pay something to allow whatever. There is probably some money somewhere that I can just about justify in my head as about that it's not valued in the price of the car. But I now own this thing. I literally have the thing. It's on my driveway. That's like owning a cup and you can't open the lid. Yeah. I uh physically I have it. You can buy these cars. Uh it's BNW, that's been uh you can oh my god, they're bad. We hate them! Well, I didn't know this. You can buy the cars new with the subscription included in the price of the car. But the day that you're driving and you go, fuck it's cold, you press the button, it goes, sorry, mate, the subscriptions run out. I will drive off the edge of a massive hill. It's it's an insane, insane thing. Yeah. That is it it undoes everything we like about cars in the most generic sense for everyone. Not just for for car guys and gals, for everyone. It undoes everything we know about owning something. Oh, we're gonna start getting into communism in it. Yeah. So we begin with that, but I'd disclisk video games. No, thank you for the uh question camera, but I'm now seething with anger. I can't wait to press your MX5 heated seats button. Yeah. That's my boiling hot, but point proven. I mean, this is the first podcast we've done where it's probably been a just less than 30 degrees in this room. Yeah. I'm really proud of us, man. You have spoken with more zest than ever. I've got so much energy. There is no beads of sweats on your head. Sweats? Sweat on your head. None at all. None. The bottom of my glasses haven't even oh I have a little bit, but they always do. But I'm not wearing a fog machine on my face. It's amazing. It's quite nice. Well, I guess that calls time. Yeah, to save another technical difficulty. Yeah. Thank you so much for listening and watching. And if you're listening and not watching, watch it. Um because otherwise you won't see us. Yeah, and also all the time we spend editing these damn videos. What I'd recommend is you listen to it and then watch it in silence. Yeah, actually, yeah, just put it on in the background. That's a really good shout. A hundred times over as well, if you please. Yeah, just put it on loop. Yeah. While you're asleep. So we get eight plays. Yeah. And then we know we're watching while people are sleeping as well. It makes me feel warm. It makes me feel slightly better. Yeah. Umtake on all social platforms. We have a TikTok, if you feel so inclined. We have an Instagram, which you should follow. Yeah. And we have a YouTube, which you might be watching us on. Yeah. Where can I find you, Liam? You can find me on Instagram and on YouTube. Just down the M25. Just here's my coordinates. Um you can find me on Instagram as well. You can find you on Instagram as well, can't you? You can find me at Liam J Carter, and you are at SmithRafe, R-A-I-F-E. Yeah, R-A-I-F-E. Must remember that. I get it wrong too. I'm already excited for next week's. Yeah, man. We've got quite a lot to talk about. We we we also have some questions we missed out on last week that we should really get to. And uh that also means I need to message the people who asked the questions and say, what was your question? Because I've completely forgotten. Um all of that in due course, I'm sure. I don't like how well this ended. No, it's ended way too neatly. Yeah. We no one's stormed out, no one's thrown anything. That's what kind of point of your socks. Can you see one of those socks? Yeah, look at my socks. Look at my look at my socks. Okay, look at those socks. Look at that. Look at this one as well. They're different. They're they're a matching set. This one's rolled up. They're a matching, they're a matching set, but they're designed not to match. Call me. Um, yeah. So this has been your automotive intake. Yeah, do follow us on Instagram. We do different stuff on Instagram. And follow us on YouTube because some exciting things are coming to YouTube in the near future. Um Rafe's actually logged out. He's put his mic down and he's just texting on his phone. So, um if anyone wants to buy some k pretty premium stuff.
SPEAKER_02You can't let it be.
SPEAKER_01Um So shall we bleep the word k and blur the g can we blur things?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'll find a way.
SPEAKER_01Can we blur things?
unknownYou can try it.
