somebody when my life is together. 00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:37.199 You see, our search for certainty and clarity puts us in a state of paralysis where we don't do anything because we don't have all the problem when it comes to following Jesus, it's allowing our doubts to control us. 00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:32.800 Or if we're being honest, using our doubts as the excuse for why we're not obeying what would have absolute certainty and clarity before we did everything, he wouldn't have chosen anybody to follow him because we all have our doubts. 00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:56.879 And this morning we're gonna take a look at the great commission that he issued for us to go and make disciples. 00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:04.959 And what you need to know is that if Jesus only used people who didn't have any 00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:23.680 But today we're gonna be wrapping up our follow me series where we've been looking at what discipleship really means. 00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:30.079 You see, discipleship is not the classes we take, it's not the programs we're a part of, it's not the ministries of the church. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:39.360 Discipleship is responding to Jesus' invitation to follow him so that he can transform you and send you to help others follow him. 00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:54.240 And as I think back over the past five weeks of this series, the thing that continues to be revealed is the trap that we fall into, that discipleship is a place or a destination that we one day will get to, where we will arrive. 00:07:54.480 --> 00:07:59.199 When it's actually a relationship with Jesus that changes everything that we do. 00:07:59.360 --> 00:08:01.120 It's a journey that we go on. 00:08:01.279 --> 00:08:06.800 And we started with Jesus telling us to come get out of our boat and to inside out. 00:08:22.720 --> 00:08:28.160 But today, we discover what all where all of this is ultimately headed to. 00:08:28.560 --> 00:08:33.440 You see, discipleship is more than classes, programs, and ministries. 00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:37.600 As we follow Jesus, our relationship with him changes everything. 00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:41.759 He calls us out of our old life and in makes us new. 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:45.759 In the journey of discipleship, it's like it's like a highway, really. 00:08:46.080 --> 00:08:57.600 As we drive further and further down this highway, uh we look back and we see all the ways that God has worked in our lives, all the differ distance that He's taken us on this journey with Him. 00:08:57.919 --> 00:09:02.000 But discipleship isn't like driving I-75 down to the beach. 00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:05.279 No, I-75 has a destination at the end. 00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:13.279 When you drive it to go on vacation, you drive down I-75 and eventually you reach your destination where you're on vacation and your feet hit the sand. 00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:17.759 Whereas discipleship is really more like a circular highway. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:24.399 You see, discipleship first calls you out, but then God's mission sends you right back in. 00:09:24.879 --> 00:09:37.919 Jesus changes you from the inside out, he delivers you from your sin, but then he sends you back often to the same place that he delivered you from in order to help others on that same journey that he took you on. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:43.120 And that's what Jesus is about to do with his disciples here in Matthew 28. 00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:47.360 So if you could stand with me out of respect for the reading of God's word, I'd really appreciate it. 00:09:47.519 --> 00:09:51.279 We're gonna read Matthew 28, verses 16 through 20 this morning. 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:58.879 It says this Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 00:09:59.120 --> 00:10:02.879 When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. 00:10:03.200 --> 00:10:10.240 Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:24.000 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. 00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:28.799 And surely I am with you always to the very end of the age. 00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:30.799 This is the word of God for the people of God. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:32.720 You may be seated this morning. 00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:41.600 So the passage that we just read right there, those are the last words in the book of Matthew. 00:10:41.919 --> 00:10:51.279 This means that Matthew concludes his gospel, the place in which, right in the same place in which this journey of discipleship began. 00:10:51.519 --> 00:11:03.600 You see, in Matthew chapter 4, we see Jesus as he's walking along the Sea of Galilee, and he sees these fishermen out at shore on their boat, and he says, Get out of your boat and come and follow me. 00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:11.039 Now, here in Matthew 28, Jesus gives his final commands in the same place in which he told them to get out of their boat. 00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:13.840 We're back in Galilee again. 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:19.679 You see, Jesus, he didn't gather to the disciples for his very last instruction in Jerusalem. 00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:23.120 He doesn't gather them together at the foot of the cross. 00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:26.720 He doesn't gather them together at the empty tomb. 00:11:27.039 --> 00:11:30.960 No, for three years, these men they had left their livelihood behind. 00:11:31.120 --> 00:11:35.360 They left their family, they left everything they knew in order to follow Jesus. 00:11:35.519 --> 00:11:41.279 And now three day three years later, they're back in the town that they were called to leave. 00:11:41.519 --> 00:11:44.080 Yesterday I drove back to Indianapolis. 00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:51.919 I got to play golf with some of my friends, but while I was driving, I drove all of the same roads that I used to drive for the six years that I lived there. 00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:55.440 Um I drove past my old house that I used to live in. 00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:00.000 I even went to the coffee shop that I would go to weekly while I was there. 00:12:00.159 --> 00:12:06.480 And it's amazing how, in just a couple of years, the place that you once lived can feel so foreign from your home. 00:12:06.720 --> 00:12:09.440 Like I used to feel so comfortable driving down those streets. 00:12:09.519 --> 00:12:11.759 I used to feel like that was where I was meant to be. 00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:16.159 And now just a couple years later, I'm like, oh, this doesn't feel like home anymore. 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:20.159 This feels like I'm a tourist in a new spot back over again. 00:12:20.320 --> 00:12:24.240 And I wonder if that's how the disciples felt here in this moment. 00:12:24.559 --> 00:12:31.840 The disciples, they had gone from their past life to following Jesus and they had no expectations of returning. 00:12:32.080 --> 00:12:36.480 They must have felt this uncomfortable sensation that they were out of place. 00:12:37.200 --> 00:12:42.480 But it's the exact place that Jesus invites them into the next part of his story. 00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:49.279 The past reminds us of our failures, our baggage, our struggles, the pain we've experienced. 00:12:49.440 --> 00:12:53.360 And when we follow Jesus, what he does is he invites us to get out of our boat. 00:12:53.519 --> 00:12:58.240 He takes us out, he delivers us from that past life and he makes us new. 00:12:58.559 --> 00:13:02.159 But we also should never forget where Jesus has brought us out of. 00:13:02.320 --> 00:13:11.360 And it's here on this mountain in Galilee that although the disciples may have felt out of place, that Jesus is reminding them all of what he's done in their life. 00:13:11.600 --> 00:13:18.159 He's reminding them of all of that they have experienced together and all of the transformation that they have been a part of. 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:23.759 Jesus brings you back to the place and people where you came from with a new purpose. 00:13:23.919 --> 00:13:26.159 And that's what he does with the disciples here. 00:13:26.399 --> 00:13:35.440 It's only when we remember the place that Jesus has brought us out of that we can begin to share the same love that we experienced with others around us. 00:13:35.759 --> 00:13:46.720 You might think that your past is what disqualifies you, but Jesus sees your past as the opportunity for restoration to begin in your life and with others around you. 00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:57.360 What you have experienced, what you have gone through, maybe the exact story that someone needs to hear to find hope that there's a God out there who loves them and cares about them. 00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:03.440 Your story, when a part of God's story, is where purpose and meaning is found in your life. 00:14:03.679 --> 00:14:11.679 We should never forget where Jesus has called us out of because it's the exact place that God may use you to impact others. 00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:19.200 He goes on in verse 17 and says, When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. 00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:34.080 So in Matthew's gospel, the way he tells the resurrection of Jesus is the women, they they go to the tomb where Jesus' body was buried, and when they get there, they they are trying to take care of his body, but the stone has been rolled away. 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:42.799 And then they encounter the risen Jesus, who tells the women to go tell their brothers and the disciples to meet him in Galilee. 00:14:43.039 --> 00:14:47.519 So the women are the ones who first hear the good news of Jesus and go share it. 00:14:47.759 --> 00:14:51.679 Jesus entrusted the first announcement of the resurrection to the women. 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:56.399 I'm not going to get into a women in ministry uh sermon here, but I want to I want to make that very clear. 00:14:56.559 --> 00:15:00.320 Who does God use at the very first time to share the gospel is women. 00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:01.759 All right, we'll move on from there. 00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:09.039 But so when the disciples, when they go to Galilee after these women had told them to go, they meet Jesus on the mountain. 00:15:09.200 --> 00:15:19.600 And when they get to the mountain and they see him, Jesus says that they they saw, Matthew says that they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. 00:15:20.240 --> 00:15:22.399 Kind of a weird thing to add in there. 00:15:22.799 --> 00:15:23.600 Doubted? 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:25.440 What are they doubting? 00:15:25.759 --> 00:15:30.720 They're standing face to face with the risen Jesus on this mountain in Galilee. 00:15:30.960 --> 00:15:35.120 Are they not convinced that this guy in his flesh is alive? 00:15:35.360 --> 00:15:37.039 What is it that they are doubting? 00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:41.200 These disciples in this moment should have had total certainty. 00:15:42.639 --> 00:15:45.519 You and I would dream to have this moment. 00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:52.639 Like if we could just stand face to face with Jesus for just a minute, we would probably say that we would never have a doubt again. 00:15:52.799 --> 00:15:58.240 We'd do anything that he called us to do because then we would have seen him with our own eyes. 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:01.519 But what was it that they were doubting here? 00:16:01.759 --> 00:16:04.320 Were they doubting that --> 00:16:18.879 Probably. 00:16:19.440 --> 00:16:22.399 We don't know exactly what their doubts were. 00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:26.399 And to be honest, they probably all had many different doubts. 00:16:26.559 --> 00:16:30.480 They probably all had different questions and different things that they didn't have answers to. 00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:33.120 It was all individualized to each of them. 00:16:33.440 --> 00:16:43.440 But Matthew feels it's important enough for us to know that the disciples, even when standing face to face with the risen Jesus, had their doubts. 00:16:43.919 --> even shares them here in this passage. 00:17:01.360 --> 00:17:06.000 Instead, Jesus doesn't answer their doubts, he gives them a mission. 00:17:06.160 --> 00:17:11.599 And here's the truth you don't have to have all the answers to be a part of God's story. 00:17:11.839 --> 00:17:19.279 In the face of their doubts, Jesus doesn't even address them, and he still sees them as worthy of his mission. when we talk about the Great Commission, we really only focus on verses 19 through 20. 00:18:21.599 --> 00:18:25.440 We speak and teach as if that's like the whole Great Commission. 00:18:25.680 --> to deliver the message that Jesus loves them. 00:31:39.839 --> 00:31:52.720 In John 4, there's a story of this Samaritan woman, and she goes to the well in the middle of the day, it's the hottest part of the day, no one else is there, and she does it on purpose because she doesn't want to see anybody. 00:31:52.880 --> 00:31:57.519 She wants to avoid everyone, but she encounters Jesus there. 00:31:57.759 --> 00:32:06.960 And instead of Jesus seeing her with shameful eyes that she experiences everywhere else she goes in her life, Jesus sees her in a way that no one else ever had. 00:32:07.519 --> 00:32:16.720 Everybody else had seen for her for what she had done, while Jesus saw her, calls her out of her sin and into a new life. 00:32:17.039 --> 00:32:21.519 This encounter her, that the Messiah Jesus was there, that there is a savior that they had been waiting for. 00:32:43.440 --> 00:32:49.279 The woman was too ashamed to even go to the well at the risk of running into
