Hey Tommy, the Patriots just outplayed the Eagles in two straight practices. Real or preseason hype? So I think it's real. The first practice, they dominated them. The second practice, there was an issue with the run game, stopping Saquon. Uh, but the first practice they dominated. The second practice they did too. My only concern is stopping the run. Um, but overall, I think it was a win for the Patriots. They had a really good two days outside of uh Saquon just running through uh a defensive line that was porous on on the second day.
SPEAKER_01I just think I think they're for real. I think the run defense could be a problem, but they have time to address that. Let's get into it. It's gonna be a good show. This is the Boston Bullpen Podcast and welcome back to the Boston Bullpen Podcast. This is episode five. I'm Gil, he's Tommy. We had two joint practices with the Eagles. The Red Sox bats finally came alive. We got a new top five for you this week. Really good show. I'm excited. Let's get into it.
SPEAKER_00The gridiron.
SPEAKER_01All right, Tommy, we're gonna start off with the Patriots. This podcast, I think it's necessary. We're getting close. They just had two joint practices with the Eagles. Seemed like they had a really good two days. How much do you buy these two practices with the Eagles?
SPEAKER_03So on a scale of one to ten, I'd give it like a seven and a half, seven point five. I think that's pretty fair. They went against a really good secondary. Drake may carved him up. Uh receivers kind of ate. AJ Brown was doing what he does. I do think some of that might be a little overplayed because of what he was looking to do against his former team that he felt spited him. Uh, and he and he spikes them clearly. But overall, seven and a half. The days were good. They dominated the defense. They had some problems uh with stopping the run. Uh, that's an issue. That's gonna be an issue. But overall, I'd say seven and a half, seven point five, maybe an eight. I think they had two really good days.
SPEAKER_01I do think they're short at linebacker overall, not just outside linebacker, but just their linebackers up the middle, too. I don't think they're great. I think having Christian Gonzalez back will help with the run. He is one of the best cornerbacks in the league at defending the run. And then again, it is Saquon Barkley. We're talking a top five, top seven running back in the league. He's getting a little bit older now, so I'll say maybe top seven, but you know, he's Saquon Barkley. I think overall, just that day one, man, was impressive. 15 of 18 for Drake May, 65-yard touchdown to AJ Brown, just carving him up. And even before that first day of joint practice in 11 on 11 drills, Drake Drake May was carving up his own team. He just seemed like he was on a bit of a heater going into that practice. But overall, good, you know. I they're they're playing against the Eagles. PFF has them as the number four uh defensive back unit in the league. They actually have the Patriots one, which kind of surprised me a little bit. But they have the Eagles four, carved them up. It's a Super Bowl contending defense. They have they're up front. I don't know how many teams are better, especially up the middle. They're absolute beasts over there. So just overall, I think it's really good. It was a really good test for them. I think it's great to get that type of practice this time of year, gearing up for the season. And honestly, I really wish Gonzalez was out there because I feel like he's missing crucial practice time.
SPEAKER_03All right, so what what I think about the defense is I think the Patriots defense, the linebackers, are good on paper, but they're thin behind some of the guys. So my my big concern would be uh Harold Landry, uh Draymond Jones. So Draymond Jones is in his ninth year in the league. He's 29 years old. Harold Landry was hurt a lot last year. Again, a guy who's got a lot of miles on his legs. So the edge, the the edge is a concern if those guys are hurt. You know, up the middle, Robert Spillane, he plays a position that takes uh a ton of the brunt of the hits. Uh, and he's a guy that's been hurt consistently. So if these guys are healthy, they're good. But if but but if not, you know, they're getting old quick. So outside of those guys, and a guy that I really love this year was Kevin Bayard. I love that signing. But again, he's a guy, he's a guy who has a lot of tread uh that has taken off the tires. There's not a ton left there. And then outside of Gonzo, uh Carlton Davis, who's a guy that I don't really like, he's also old. So you look at those five guys, if one or two of those guys go down, their defense is going to take a big hit because there's not a lot of depth behind there. You have Yakis, okay, that's fine. But that's why we'll get into it later. Christian Baumor is one of the keys to this team this year. He's not an ancillary player and he's not a frontline guy, but he's a guy that makes everyone's job easier. And we'll get into it later. But their defense, if they get hurt, there's not a lot of depth there.
SPEAKER_01And honestly, I think Harold Landry is is really important too. I he led them in sacks last year and and he missed games. Now, if we go into the season without him, they're super thin at outside linebacker. You're counting on a rookie and Jones. Like, that's pretty much it, you know. That's that's that's gonna be tough to deal with. But hopefully that, you know, hopefully they'll stay healthy. I think a lot of these guys have been out. So the backups have been playing, especially in these practices. And it sounds like in this preseason game coming up, they're gonna get a lot of run. Because from what Vabril said, it doesn't sound like many starters are gonna be playing in that game. And that's kind of what I wanted to talk to you about next. So we'll go right into it. The preseason game, which will be tonight. We're we're recording the night before, but Saturday night, the preseason game against the Eagles. What are you looking for? I like I said, no, I don't think many starters are gonna play. So are you looking for, you know, those guys, especially on the defensive end, to step up and play well? So I'm looking for some of those guys to play a little bit.
SPEAKER_03You know, they're not gonna play a lot, but uh I I really want to see what like a guy like Yakis is gonna do. Um, and I want to look at some of what some of the middle uh the middle linebackers are gonna do, some of the guys that are second and third string, especially the second string guys, see what they can do. I I I I want to see what Woodsick can do in the defensive backfield. These are guys that I think are gonna be very vital for this team. I don't think Milton Williams is gonna play. You're not gonna see much of Barmore, which is how the NFL goes now. It's like the first two regular season games are like get right games. Yeah, it's just it's just but the league is the league is so tight now that you can't win it, you can't lose those games. You gotta win them. But I am concerned about I want to see where the where where the edge, uh the the second or third guys on the edge are gonna be, where the middle linebackers are gonna be the guys that are the depth guys, see what they can do because again, you're looking at Bayard, you're looking at Woodson, you're looking at you're looking at Calton Davis, you you're looking at Barmore, you're looking at Williams, Landry, Spillane, Draymond Jones, guys who have missed time in in the past, some more than others, but if one or two of those guys are out, especially two at the same position, if you have Landry and Draymond Jones out, you got a problem. Or if you have Landry and Spillane out, you got a big problem. So I don't know what they're gonna do, but like you know, the the defense is fine, but there's not it was like last year's offensive line. There's no depth. On the defense right now, there's no depth. And you may not have one of the one of the top five or six cornerbacks in the league. Do I think he plays? I think he does. And I think he comes back and wants to get a contract next year, but you never know. Without him, you got a big problem.
SPEAKER_01I agree. And that's something I wanted to talk about, also, is Gonzalez. Like, I I really don't know what's going on. Right when it happened, you know, there was the he had that hard fall, he landed on his back, it might be his ankle. But then also I heard a report that if there was a regular season game that week, he would play, but the guy still isn't on the field. So what's going on? It's to me, it seems like it's just a holdout, and and they're just kind of playing along with it.
SPEAKER_03So what concerns me is number one, uh they said he was limping again. Anyone in the contract dispute's gonna limp across the field. Like the agent says, hey, make sure you limp. Okay. The but my concern is these guys haven't ramped up, okay? And what happens, what type I'm gonna ask you a question. What type of injury happens when you don't ramp up and then you stop and then you stop playing? What is the one of the first things that that that goes? Soft tissue. Anything soft tissue, hamstrings, hamstring, thank you. Hamstring. So your hamstring goes. So it happened to him, it happened to him. It was the last year, the year before, it was last year. He missed four games to start the year with a hamstring injury. Uh and Vrabel wasn't happy about it in the it in the preseason press conferences. He to his demeanor, you know, you could be it was inferred that he was questioning whether Gonzo was ready to go when training camp started, had he done the right training in the offseason on his own, whatnot, because he was hurt. Again, that was the inference, whatever. So he hasn't been going. He hasn't been running at you know 80% speed like these other guys are. So to put him in week one, it's not gonna work. He's you know, a soft tissue would you a quadricep, a hamstring, something else. He's gonna do tear something, he's gonna be out. So if he's not ready to go, I don't know what you do.
SPEAKER_01I know. It makes me nervous. And and we've talked about it on the past pause. Is like that's why I've been so gun-ho about giving this guy a contract. Like, I get it, you don't want to be stretched too thin, you don't want to give him too much money, but like this guy not being on the field could be a massive hit to this team if he comes into the season and just ends up going down right away with a pulled hammy. He is uh he's out four weeks, you know. That's their their schedule starts off hot. Like they need to come in banging, you know? And I just I just don't feel like right now that Gonzalez is gonna be on the same level as the rest of these guys because these guys are out there playing, they're out there playing full reps against other teams, and he's been out since August 12th. We're, you know, getting to the end of August now, you know?
SPEAKER_03I mean, he's been out, but he really hasn't been in. Like he hasn't been going 100%. I don't think they're gonna pay him. I really don't.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I I just disagree. I still think they're gonna pay him eventually. I just don't think it's now. I think they're just gonna wait. Why at this point? Why pay him? He's already been sitting out. Just let him sit out and play the year and deal with the next season.
SPEAKER_03Right. He's gonna play. He he he has to play. He has to come back, I assume by week 12. It used to be week 11. Uh, if you sat out, you had to play by week 11 to get your your your year of tenure. So I'm assuming with 17 you're gonna come back by week 12. But this is a guy that's not gonna play. He's gonna say I'm hurt, I'm sitting out, and it's gonna be a problem, it's gonna be a culture issue. You know, we don't need any more problems here. This team has had enough. They've apparently they've survived the Mike Vrabel, Diana Rossini thing, because that's kind of pushed to the side. No one's talked about it. But we don't need another thing, okay? We we, you know, we we had we had the quarterback and and the greatest quarterback and the greatest head coach fighting each other, you know, verbally and whatnot, okay? We had a tight end killing people. We had other people getting arrested. We had a we have a uh head coach with a reporter. It may just get can we just get through this, please? We don't need something else.
SPEAKER_01It's too much. I mean, the thing is now though, like next year the the salary cap's projected to be like 330 million. So, like, I know it's a lot to spend, 130 million on three guys, but outside of those guys, who's taking up a lot of the cap? There's not many. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03Milton Williams makes good money.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Milton Williams makes good money, but like you can restructure Milton Williams like every other team does. That's what they all do. They sign them two years in, you restructure the deal, you give them a bonus, and then it comes off the cap. Yeah, you sign the next guy. I get it.
SPEAKER_03I I get it. I I I absolutely get it. It's just not how the crafts operate. They told the greatest quarterback of all time to go pound sand.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then they watched them win a Super Bowl for somebody else.
SPEAKER_03Right. And then they went and won four games and three, like it just, you know. It was a nightmare. The teams valued at over six billion dollars. They got all that World Cup money, they have all this money. I I I just think it's more of like the, you know, I love Bob Kraft for saving the team, but I think the team has run like a John Henry operation where it's just uh bottom line money. And and and I mean, you know, the cap is fake, but tell me I'm wrong with how they spend their money. I'm not wrong.
SPEAKER_01No, you're you're right. And I think over the next year or so, we're gonna really see if it's still the same or if they're gonna play along, you know, because this is this is where the rubber meets the road. Like, I can't think of a a time where like I know they traded for Moss back in the day, and like obviously he was already under contract, but like I can't think of a time where they had three guys that were demanding that type of money.
SPEAKER_03It was it so it was the Chandler Jones year with Jamie Collins, and there was somebody else. Okay, there were three guys, you have to look it up, demanding the top dollar, and they only signed one. They traded Jones, they signed Collins, traded the other guy. Well, there it was, I forget, but they've done it and they've only signed one.
SPEAKER_01That's a little bit of a different case because you have two guys that kind of almost play the same position. You know what I mean? This is like quarterback, wide receiver, cornerback. Those are like three cornerstones of NFL team.
SPEAKER_03And the quarterback and the rip wide receiver are like part and parcel, you know. You need, you know, one helps the other a lot. So, but again, you have an aging guy who's gonna be 30 years old. They have to pay him. You know, you know, it do they they probably pay him for two years and say, okay, well, we got three years out of you. It's a first round pick. That I think that's fair. That's worth it. Yeah. But you know, but there's other, there's other stuff, you know, there's other stuff coming up. You know, there's there's uh the defensive backfield, you know, Carlton Davis is gonna be gone. He's not even a great player, but he he's coming up. The linebackers are rolled, you know, the edges, the edges are rolled. You signed a guy, but he's in his ninth year. Like there's gonna be holes coming up that they have to fill. This team has been much better at signing free agents than drafting guys. They I'd give them an A- on the guys they signed, okay? Maybe an A. Well, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That was like pre-vable, that was pre-variable though, you know. Like since very like last year was one of the best draft classes they've had in a long, long time. You know, there was the years before. Yeah, it was it was bad. Like a lot of Belichick drafts were were terrible.
SPEAKER_03But they were they they I mean, they they were absolutely terrible. You know, we'll see what happens with last year's draft and this year's draft, you know, let's see what they what they get out of it. But you know, but they've been they've been aces with signing guys in and in free agency. So I think I think they hit that out of the park. But again, they're older guys and they sign guys that are in their seventh, eighth, or ninth year. So, you know, those guys have, you know, two or three years left and it's over. So I think that's gonna be something going forward they that that we have to look at with draft capital and and and we'll get into booty later and the the picks that they've given up and the rumors about booty and stuff, but you know, having these draft picks with with an organization. Again, Elliot Wolf was here when Belichick was here too, okay? He's still here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I mean, like, the the weird thing about that whole thing is is like who was running what, you know what I mean? Like, we still don't even know is Elliot Wolf actually making the picks or is it Vrabel or is it?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, by Mike, Mike, Mike Vrabel wasn't here for the last couple rounds of the draft this year either. So, you know, so you know, uh you can't say it's Vrabel because he wasn't here for the for the for for round for day three, you know. So, uh but I I I I'm happy with Vrabel. I think he's a great coach. You know, people's personal lives, honestly, when it comes to professional sports, as long as they're not out committing crimes or hurting their hurt, physically hurting people, it is what it is, you know? Whatever. I don't care. I'm not we're not the moral police here, okay? If you're not out there committing crimes and hurting people physically and whatever, and and stealing money or whatever, your personal life is your personal life, and I can't get into that. I don't know what they got going on, I don't know what the dynamic is. Other than that, let's just play football. Let's go.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if it was if it wasn't Diana Rossini, we would have barely heard about it. If it was just a normal affair, you know what I mean? Right. But because it was Rossini, it was a huge thing and all this stuff. Exactly.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. And and and I haven't heard anything coming out about him pressuring her for this, for interviews. None of that's come out, and it would have come out by now. So I just think these were just two consenting adults making a making a decision. It doesn't make it right, but it has nothing to do with the football team. Let's just play football. That book's coming too. I think she's gonna be able to do that. That book's coming. Oh, she's gonna make she, yeah, she's gonna make she's gonna make $50 million in the book. Yeah, good for her. So but I I again, I'm not the moral police. I really don't care what you do. It has nothing to do with me. It doesn't affect my I want to watch the football on Sunday. That's fine. As long as you're not committing crimes like a tight end killing people, okay, I'm fine with it. Let's just keep going. Let's go.
SPEAKER_01And I just want to jump back to something you just said. I do think if you want to be good in the long run, like they do have to be better at drafting. You can't just hit on free agency. It has to be both, or or even you have to be better at drafting than you are at hitting that in free agency because that's when you get the guys on the cheap, you know? If you're just constantly signing guys in their sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth year, you're just constantly paying guys, you know. And I think Harold Landry was just a Vrabel guy. If Rabel was like, yeah, I love that guy, let's bring him in. And if if Harold Landry's on the field, he's still a great player. The problem is he's older and he gets banged up a little bit easier than he did when he was younger, you know.
SPEAKER_03He's a BC guy. So, but you can't draft Drake May and then lose on all the other picks, okay? When it comes to Patriots, and again, Belichick drafting guys, you know, he's done well. Gronkowski with the back injury, but Curtis Martin, in the third round out of pit, he had an ankle injury or some type of leg, I think it was an ankle injury. Grabbed him in the third round. He's a top five, seven running back of all time. Bill missed exponentially, like really bad, but he hit on a lot of guys. You need a guy in the first round to be successful. You can't miss. The second round, you know, out of out of four second round, three, two or three or four second round picks, you got to hit on almost all of them. You can miss one. That's it. Third rounds, we where you get your running backs, maybe a backup lineman. And then the fourth to seventh, it's just it's a crapshoot. But but on the fourth through seventh, you got to hit what a year? A guy that can just play. Nobody that's gonna be great, but a guy, if you get a puka nakua, fifth round, you know, stud. But you gotta hit on those. So one through one, it has to be a guy that's on your team for, you know, at least through his rookie contract, and a guy that you probably extend. Second round, you got to hit on that. Third round, you got to hit, you know, three times out of four. Four through seven, you got to hit one or two every year. A guy that can be a, that can play, that you can fill it in, play, and every once in a while, you get somebody who's a stud. Puka Nakua, Tom Brady. Not gonna happen again ever. But like you get what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_03Terrell Davis, fifth round pick. Like, you have to hit on these guys every once in a while, and then you hit on the one through three guys that are, you know, could be franchise cornerstones and then everyday players, and then you get somebody else, and then you're good. And then you you couple that with your uh free agent signings. You have older guys, you have younger guys, you have a good mix. That's what you have to do to win.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that's how you balance the cap, too. This is when you go for it. This is why, and we're gonna get into it now. We're gonna get into Kayshawn Booty. Like, this is why I don't think they're gonna trade Kayshawn Booty because you have Drake May on his rookie deal still. You need to go for it. You need to keep your players and you need to go for it. Because eventually, like you said, he's gonna get 70 million a year, and then the crafts aren't gonna spend any more money. So, what are we gonna do? There's not many third wide receivers on a team that are better than Kayshawn Booty in the league.
SPEAKER_03I absolutely cannot wait to get into this with you because I'm ready to go. So you let me know, and we're going at it. Go ahead. I don't think they're gonna trade booty. Okay, so so here's the thing with Booty, okay? So Booty, sixth-round pick, again, he fell in the draft because of whatever. He he had a great, he had, you know, a great career at LSU. Okay. So on this team, he's not a third. He's the fourth. You could say he's a third, he's not. Okay. AJ Brown is their guy. That's their that's their their deep guy. You have Romeo Dobbs across the middle, then your third guy is Mac Hollins. He's your guy that catches the ball third and four. That's your guy. So who's your fourth? Kayshawn Booty. But here's the problem. Romeo Dobbs has a major concussion history. Okay. So if he goes down, you need a slot guy. It's not Hollins. Who is it? It's Pop Douglas. They have to keep him because if Romeo Dobbs gets popped going across the middle, it's going to be a problem. So Brown, Dobbs, so deep guy, slot guy, short down, uh, a short yardage receiver. There's your third. It is what it is. You have you have Henderson and Ramondre out of the backfield. Booty, who I like, is your fourth receiver. But you he he's not because Pop's going to be your fourth because of Dobbs. I've thought a lot about this. If Dobbs goes down, you have a major problem in the slot. You don't have somebody. Chisholm's not the guy. So if he's your fourth guy, now you have the Texans. Again, they just went and signed two guys today because they did reach out to the Patriots. The Patriots probably said we want a first-round pick. Whatever. It should have been they would have taken a third. Okay. A desperate team will do that. The Texans looked great the other night. Their offense was flying. They can run the ball. Stroud, I don't know what happened to him. I don't know where he went in the offseason, but he was awesome the other night. Again, he's done that. He's playing against backups. Right. So again, so was everybody else. So if he the judge. Well, yeah, he's gonna be all right. They ran the shit out of the ball, okay? So, and they have good receivers, but they just lost one of their better ones. Tank Dell might not come back this year either. He's got issues. So they have Nico Collins and then they don't really have much else. They need a guy. So they signed the Zay Jones and the other guy they signed today. You know, those guys are.
SPEAKER_01Sterling Shepard.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, Sterling Shepard on the Giants a couple years ago. Zay Jones on the Jaguars, like it's just uh just, I don't know. They're like the fourth guy, but they still need a guy. So it's still open, but somebody else is gonna get hurt. If somebody offers you, so the Patriots are not going to extend booty, okay? So if you think they're gonna win the Super Bowl this year, I got some underwater fire insurance. I still need to sell to you. I talked to you about it earlier. They're they are they are a playoff team. If you get in the playoffs, I heard in sports radio today, and I agree with it. In the playoffs, you're a contender. But let's be real about it. They're not one of the top three or four teams, three teams in the AFC. Okay. They might Who is?
SPEAKER_01Who is then? Tell me who is. Because you have the Baltimore, you have the Baltimore Ravens, first year head coach. Listen, nope. These are the favorites. These are the Vegas favorites. Baltimore Ravens, first year head coach, Buffalo Bills, first year head coach. Never coached before ever. Come on. First year head coach, never coached before. You think that guy's gonna coach him when Sean McDermott couldn't? He's one of the better coaches in the league. Doesn't even have a job right now. It's insane. They have Joe Brady in there. He's never done it in his life. Sean McDermott was one of the worst coaches, and they couldn't. Every year's not.
SPEAKER_03No, he's not. Every year they said, every year they said, why is this guy still here?
SPEAKER_01So You're gonna see this year with Joe Brady. Because that team's bad. That defense is bad.
SPEAKER_03So he's gonna ruin, he's gonna ruin Josh. Josh Allen can win nine games. Josh Dominicans.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. And he's gonna lose in the playoffs like Josh Allen does. Like he's done every year of his entire career. So who else is better? The Cincinnati Bengals?
SPEAKER_03No. The Bungles? Who else? So I know I know you're gonna hate me, but I do think the Ravens have a shot this year. They've loaded.
SPEAKER_01Lamar cannot win in the playoffs. He's proven it over and over and over and over again. Lamar Jackson cannot win in the playoffs.
SPEAKER_03You the Patriots have five guys on defense that are almost 30 years old. If two of those guys get hurt, which they do all the time, Landry, Spillane, hurt all the time. If those guys go out, buddy, you might win seven games.

That's what Romeo Dobbs is. He's a third-down machine. He's a red zone machine. Then you have AJ Brown that could do literally everything. Then you have Booty who takes the top off the defense. You have to respect it. Nobody respects MacCollins. No one.
SPEAKER_03Well, how how how many deep threat guys do you want on the line at any given place? It's one. There's one. JJ and AJ Brown. Right. Booty too. Booty's a deep threat, too. But you're not going to have two of those guys on the line at the same time.

SPEAKER_03I like Booty. Booty is great for the home run threat. I like it. But if someone, if someone's going to give you a third-round pick, that's it. Fourth round pick, see you later, he stays. If someone gives you a third round pick for Kayshawn Booty, you're crazy to not take it.

SPEAKER_03All right, so my number five is is a two guys, but it's important positions. So for a deep playoff run, I have uh Landry and Spillane being healthy. Those two guys are super integral. They're older, they both play very important positions. Uh the edge is a problem. Landry was hurt last year. Um, and Spillane was hurt last year, but but when both were playing, they were effective. But for the Patriots to advance in the playoffs, they're gonna need a healthy Harold Landry and a healthy Robert Spillane. If if if either guy goes down, the next guy up is nowhere near their abilities. And I think those guys combined, um, and I hate saying combined, it's like, oh, just pick a guy, but like I don't do it often, but I have to because I think those two guys combined are important for what this team has to do as a whole.
SPEAKER_01So I have Landry at four, so I'll just do my four. And I agree with you 100%. He is very important to this team. Like I said earlier, he led the team in sacks last year, and you need sacks, and especially as good as I think this offense is gonna be. If you're playing with the lead, you need pass rushers. And then even when you're not, like like you said, Spillane, you you need to be able to stop the run, you know? You need to be able to stop drives. I agree 100%. My number five is AJ Brown. And I just think if AJ Brown goes down, the whole offense changes. Because this offense is gonna revolve around AJ Brown coming into the season, and I think it should. I think he's the best player on offense, you know, maybe aside from Drake May, but everything's gonna revolve around him. I think they're gonna move him around a ton. He's gonna demand the top coverage, double coverage. It's gonna open up everything else, and Josh McDaniel should be able to have a field day. But if he's not on the field, then that changes everything.
SPEAKER_03All right, so I I like that. You know, I like you to put him at two, like I like everyone would do. I'm gonna give you my my number four, and it's got Kevin Byard. So Kevin Byard is a leader in the in the defensive secondary, and it this is really important if Gonzo was not there. You know, so he he's a guy that that that has played uh eight or nine years in the league. He's a leader. He he can pick the ball off. He he I think he had he had several inceptions last year. I don't know if he if he uh was was tops in safeties, but he was close. But he's gonna be a good thing.
SPEAKER_01He's had a couple of years in his career where he's been close to the city.
SPEAKER_03So you're gonna you you're if you have a if if you have somebody back there that that is not experienced, uh you need Kevin Bayer to over the top like McCourty used to be, like Malloy used to be, like uh Rodney Harrison, who should be in the Hall of Fame. Rodney Harrison's a Hall of Famer. There's only two guys with uh, I believe 30 sacks and 30 picks or something uh ever. And I think Ray Lewis was the only other one, the Hall of Fame, something like that. I gotta check it. I gotta check it.
SPEAKER_01But uh hey, quick story about about Rodney Harrison. So I I actually met him at like a Panera Bread in Norton. The craziest thing about that guy, dude, me and him like standing next to him, we're the same size. And I'm like, this dude like kills people. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I mean, like, no, like I mean, honestly, if I was there and he wanted to fight you, I would walk away and not help you because he's a menace. Yeah, he's a m he like he's a menace. Like he just, he just, you know, he just took heads off people. And when they brought him in, um, I digress here, but when they brought him in, Belgi did it for a reason. He was a monster, and that's why they got rid of Lloyd Malloy. Uh but Kevin Byard is the guy, came from the Bears. He's a leader in the secondary. If you and if you don't have Gonzo, and if you have him here or there, but you you know, you need a guy back there. You know, Woodson is still inexperienced back there. You you need a guy like that. Colton Davis, he takes a lot of risks. I think Byard is important for that defense. Uh, especially if your pass rush isn't where it needs to be, you need that other secondary help. So he's my number four. Who is your number three?
SPEAKER_01Okay, so my number three, my number four was Landry, my number five is AJ Brown, my number three is Will Campbell. And I just think which Will Campbell are we gonna get? First half, Will Campbell. Second half Will Campbell. Either way, if Will Campbell's not playing, then you have the rookie Lomu playing left tackle, which he's been kind of, or maybe it's Marcus Bryant, because I it's going to be Bryant.
SPEAKER_03It'll be Bryant. They're not even Bryant, which is worse.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. Like I don't know. I don't know which is better. Neither is good, you know. I just think he needs to play, he needs to play well for them to have any hopes of a of a Super Bowl at all.
SPEAKER_03I agree. My number three is Christian Baumore. I feel he has to help up the middle. So Milton Williams, you know, if you don't have another guy, they can double Milton Williams and they're gonna they're gonna render him useless. So you have to have another guy. Christian Baumore, second round pick, drafted higher. Charles drafted lower than he should have been because he had some issues. He was really a first-round talent. This is a guy that has that has some issues. Um, you know, I don't know what's going on with him, but you know, he he's been on the on the wrong side of stuff. He got gets pulled over and is crying is and his mother's there, and his mother's telling him to shut up and listen to the police, and he's crying for his mother, and she's like, stop it and listen to the officer, and then you know, then he goes to court and he's wearing these glasses in in the courtroom. Like, I don't know what his mental health is, but like, you know, that's not that's not really my my what I'm trying to get into here. But like they need that guy uh to be a force up front. You have him and Milton Williams, you can really stop the run. You don't have a second guy with Milton Williams, you have a problem. And you really need those two guys up the middle. So I really think Christian Milton Williams is a much better player, but he could be neutralized if you don't have another guy another guy there next to him to take to take some of the pressure off of him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Especially how how short they are at outside linebacker. If they don't have any pass rush and you don't have Barmore, they're just gonna double and triple team Milton Williams and he'll be literally useless. Right. Absolutely. That was your what? Number three?

When he's on the field, he's a top five corner in the league. You can say top seven. I don't care either way. There's two corners on the field at all times. Do the math. That's 60-something cornerbacks. He's top seven. You need that guy on the field if you're gonna make a Super Bowl run.

SPEAKER_03My number two person when it comes to the Patriots having a deep postseason run is Romeo Dobbs. If Romeo Dobbs is successful at getting open and catching balls, that means AJ Brown really had a great year. If Romeo Dobbs cannot be at number two, they're gonna double up on A.J. Brown, and he's not gonna be the explosive guy. So, yes, is AJ Brown more important? Yeah, yeah. On paper, yes. He's gonna catch more touchdowns, more receptions, have more yards. But Romeo Dobbs is gonna open up so much more for him if he's a threat. You can't double AJ Brown if Romeo Dobbs is a guy they can go to. So, based upon that, Romeo Dobbs is the guy for me. Again, AJ Brown is a better player, gonna get more money, bigger numbers, but he benefits a lot from Romeo Dobbs having a pretty good season.
SPEAKER_01I think Romeo Dobbs is a huge part of this team. I didn't have him on my list, but I mean I've talked plenty about Romeo Dobbs. I was a Romeo Dobbs fan before he came here. I'm a huge football guy. Like, I watch so much football. I actually had we had a Packers guy talking trash to me on social media, like, have you ever seen Jordan Love play a football game? Or like you don't watch the Packers? I'm like, yeah, buddy, I've seen plenty of Jordan Love. He sucks. Jordan Love sucks. He sucks, buddy.
