unknownYou found your place.
SPEAKER_02Welcome you all out there to Expressions of a Hairstylist off the record. I hope you guys are doing well out there. I have two special guests here with me today. The first one is Miss Tierra Curtis. She is a barber lactician and she has been a barber lactan for the last eight years. For those of you who do not know me, I am Donita. I am my business is Healthy Hair by Don. I've been a hairstylist for 26, well be 26 years in August. Specializing in healthy hair color and cutting. How are you doing today, T? How are you doing? I am well. How are you? Good, good, good, good. So I like I like to start the show off with customer service, right? And the reason why is I feel like I have a hard time finding people who actually are in service, like we are, that want to give good customer service. I don't know what that is, but you're grumpy and you really should be sitting in front of a computer, but instead you're standing in front of me, and I'm really not liking the grumpiness. So have you experienced any good customer service? And I like to take maybe 20, 30 seconds to uh let our listeners know and give a shout out to any good customer service you've had recently. Just overall. Any store, any grocery store, any deep retail store.
SPEAKER_03Recently, it's sad to say I cannot recall. But I say that because today it just seems as though everybody is in this hustle bustle mode and they're not really um committed to their their jobs. Um, so it just it's more like a high and buy type of situation everywhere um that I receive customer service. It's sad to say. Um, at one point it wasn't like that, but it has changed a lot. I don't really feel like there's a lot of heart in the work and this the services these days. Um yeah, I'm really trying to think of a recent. Okay.
SPEAKER_02It's okay. Trust me. I uh and that's one of the reasons why I started this because I just felt like I couldn't. I'm like, where is the customer service at? So I do want to give a special shout out to Robin at Dunkin Donuts here in Columbus, Ohio. Robin is exceptionally, she shows exceptional customer service every time I go over there. I mean, that's why I know her name. I usually order a little bit, you know, my coffee is a little, I want, you know, medium decaf, hot, put a fourth of a cup of regular coffee, put two pumps of caramel, two pumps of French vanilla, no cream, no sugar, right? So I my stuff is a little difficult, you know, can be a little, but she every time she gets it right. And she's gotten so good where she's starting to teach other people how to make make it right. So shout out to Robin.
SPEAKER_03We need more robins.
SPEAKER_02We do, but we gotta watch that because we don't want AI trying to clone her. So yes, we got we gotta watch that. We do want more robins, and you know, um it's sad that you can't even think of a recent time where you've had exceptional customer service. That's the reason why listeners, I hope you all out there are are experiencing some better customer service on a daily basis without it just being, you know, people are in their phones or they're just trying to hurry up and get you out the line, you know. So that's unfortunate.
SPEAKER_03The sad part is is I can recall uh uh some rude customer service literally yesterday. So I mean, right.
SPEAKER_02Unfortunately, yeah, that that's you know, it's sad to say.
SPEAKER_03I try to give good customer service though.
SPEAKER_02I do know that we try to be in this business, yeah, and we are service-based people, that's why it's hard, and that's why we notice it more because we're service-based people, like I'm greeting you when you come in. If I'm running behind, hey, give me a couple minutes, I'm running behind. Thank you for waiting. Like, we are service-based, so it's so difficult for me to go to a store and you are super grumpy, yeah, about your job. And I'm just like, okay, this is, and I mean, through headaches, through us feeling, you know, not feeling well, tired, yeah, you know, whatever it is, we're still able to give.
SPEAKER_03Turn it on and give 100%. Yes.
SPEAKER_02So I mean, yeah. Well, we're gonna, we're hoping that all the service people around the world, if you are in service, this is your call to uh put out a ex uh good customer service that we will we would like to recognize because it should not be that hard to remember any. I mean, of course, the bad always sometimes outweighs the good, but I try to make sure that we give um shout out to those that are good.
SPEAKER_03Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02So a couple questions that I have for you today. What is the wildest confession that the client has ever made to you that actually changed how you parent your kids? Wildest confession? You say confession.
SPEAKER_03Or statement or comment or something that has changed how I parent my kids.
SPEAKER_02Or maybe thought made you think about chang how you changed.
SPEAKER_03Well, I know I was given some really good information um from a lady whose kids are well grown now. And um so I'm going through the teenage life with some of my kids. And um, we were talking about it, and I was just telling her, you know, how you know it can be frustrating to try to get them to do what what needs to be done and follow the rules and everything else, and she told me, you know, we don't control them, we guide them. That is our job as a parent, right? And that concept changed everything for me because instead of me, not that I was intentionally trying to control them, but subconsciously it it was more so of a control, like um, do this, do that, be, you know. And it now looking at it, it's it's guiding. I'm I'm we're literally guiding people to become adults into this world, right? Um, so that allowed me to be able to communicate better with my teenagers and to also understand them as well. Um, because I think sometimes as parents, we get caught up in wanting to be the ones that are understood, and we we don't always stop take the time to understand the children, right? So, yeah, I that was the best advice I think I've gotten from a client.
SPEAKER_02Well, actually some really great advice because no parent in my life, or aunt or uncle, or godparent, yeah, never thought like that. Yeah, that was never a thought. So um, it was this is what I'm telling you to do, and that is the end of the sentence. There's a period there, which means you will not be saying anything after that. Exactly. And if you did, it's gonna be at your own discretion, right? Because clearly there will be something else coming behind that. So that is that was actually really good device. And I see I see that too um at the the haircutting place where I'm at. Like, I actually admire how the parents say, you know, I don't, it's it's up to him or it's up to her how they want their haircut. I'm like, yeah, that's pretty, that's I never never really did that with my son.
SPEAKER_03Because I feel like when you look at it guiding, but but you know, subconsciously we're just trying to parent, right? But when you look at the the guiding versus controlling, it humanizes it. It humanizes parenthood. You know what I mean? So yeah.
SPEAKER_02I do, I do. That's a good one. That's I mean, that's that's a good one because yeah, that I I don't think I ever, I mean, especially I just look back, you know, with my son, like I don't think I ever even asked him. I mean, there might have been a few times I asked him, why did you want your haircut? It was just kind of like cut it like this, and how much is it? Yeah, yeah. So just trying to get it done. Just trying to get it done. There you go. Is it gonna last for two weeks? Because we'll be back in two weeks.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_02So, yeah. If your salon chair could talk, what's the one piece of universal advice it would give to a burnout mom?
SPEAKER_03It won't it doesn't last. I mean, I I mean, nothing lasts forever. So, you know, hang in there. You know? Um I get a lot of moms in my chair that are burnout. And um, that is the conversation. And I and I do. I tell them, you know, you just keep going, you hang in there, you know, take time out for yourself, right? But hang in there because tough times don't last always, right? And a lot of time if my if my chair could talk, it would say, you got this. Um I find myself saying that a lot, you know, you got this. I think moms need to hear that more. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02So for listeners out there, uh T era is the mother of five beautiful little girls, and she's a barber lactician. So um, you know, knowing all too well how it is to, you know, try to find the the balance and trying to, you know, push and motivate yourself. So yeah, that's that's about the best positive suggestion you can give to any mom is like, you know, I'm tired. And I even get it from the moms. I remember our mom, she shocked me. Like, I was cutting her son's hair, and she was just like, and I was like, Yeah, I'm just gonna, you know, take some time. I was like, Well, I don't have any, you know, little kids, I'm by myself, and I'm just gonna take some time this weekend and just you know try to try to finish the movie. She said, I wish I had MF and time to myself. I wish, I mean, I was just like, oh wow. And I was like, Well, you know what? I told her, I said, you gotta carve it out. You have to carve it out. I was like, you're gonna have to get on the day of that schedule day and carve out. I said, even if it's just five minutes, right?
SPEAKER_03Gotta you're not in the shower.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. When you're not in the shower or you're not using the restroom, take five minutes to just breathe or you know, whatever it is you want to do, because it it matters, it does matter.
SPEAKER_03Um, because if mom is no good, then nothing, nothing stands if if if mom's not, you know, so it is very important.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. For sure, for sure. How do you transfer or I'm sorry, excuse me, how do you transition from salon boss to mom of five mommy managers? Yes.
SPEAKER_03So um well, it took me a minute when I first started um to to do that, to switch. I am a very firm, I have a very firm rule. I do not do hair at home. When I leave the shop, I leave work. When I walk in my home, I am up. That is pretty much how I've been able to just separate it. At one point in time, I would do hair in the shop, I would do hair at home. No, because you you never turn it off. You're you're still working, you're still parenting at the same time. You got kids doing cart rules in front of clients, it's just not it. And I I don't want to feel like I'm at work when I get home. I want to be mom, right? So that was the biggest transition I had to make. I had to learn. But but when I do walk in the house, I am straight mom. I am no longer T the stylist, I am mom. They're hungry.
SPEAKER_02You know, yeah, yeah. And it's funny because all kids, and it's so funny because I just love it. All kids, and it doesn't even matter what level of a career you are, kids do not care. Like, okay, so my dad might be or my mom might be the richest doctor. You know, we don't care. What are we having to for dinner tonight? This is my picture that I drew at school. They really don't care.
SPEAKER_03So they meet me at the they meet me at the door. The little ones meet me at the door.
SPEAKER_02Like, we gotta show you and tell whatever that was you've been doing all day. Yeah, I gotta show and tell. So yeah, so that's good that you're able to that you're able to transition from, you know, salon boss over straight over to mommy in in the car or on the way home, you know.
SPEAKER_03And another another thing I make sure of is uh my off days are off days. Those are days for my children, my family. Those days are not for me to talk about hair. Um, and I had to learn to be a little bit strict with that because as a hairstylist, you want to make sure you're doing the customer service thing, right? But I had to tell myself, no, this is not a business day. This is or even on a holiday. If if someone's calling me or texting me on a holiday, I will I will get back with you on the next business day. That's another, that's another way to keep everything balanced, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it's it's tempting in this in this business, it can be tempting, right? You know, with all due respect to those that have reached out to their stylist or their barber on a holiday, you know, in desperate need, desperate time, saying, Hey, I will pay you whatever you're charging.
SPEAKER_03It's it's the time, you know, it's a time that they don't get back as a parent, though, you know, and so yeah, there has to be a choice made. And time is the the most important currency, right? Your kids don't stay little forever.
SPEAKER_02So exactly, exactly. Can you share your emergency 10-minute like hair routine for you or your kids for those mornings when one or two kids can't find a shoe or a sock or a certain shirt or a permission ship slip has been signed? Like, what is your go-to? Like, quick, quick, quick, we got to get out of the door because I have a 9 a.m. appointment.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um, so I start with my little one. For her, I make sure I do styles that I can redo, right? So she gets ponytails. Um, I'll use like a, I mean, it whether it's like a little hair tie or even sometimes like a uh rubber band that doesn't tangle in her hair, but I'll do ponytails, I'll braid the ponytails and put like beads on the bottom. That way, after like a week, we just need to redo the ponytails. I don't have to take out the braids, I don't have to, that way we can just get up and go every day, right? Um, and for my my second youngest, she is a ponytail girly. I mean, we just brush up that hair and put it in a ponytail and we gotta go. So though that my oldest, my oldest three, they do their own hair, so I I don't have to worry about that. But yeah, for the two little ones, the quick styles, quick ponytails, let's go.
SPEAKER_02That's and you know what that's good because the other one was like, what else will we do? Ponytails did anyway. Because we're we're into ponytails, like just push it to the side in the back, the front, whatever, it's new ponytail. Exactly. Well, that's I mean, listen, the punk the one thing about the ponytail, you want to ponytail going down in history for centuries, yeah, is a ponytail, high, low to the side, absolutely wherever you want to put it. Exactly. It's it is never going anywhere for sure. For sure. Being a stylist is physically demanding. How do you manage standing all day energy when you still have to go home to a team of kids?
SPEAKER_03That's a good one. I don't know. Um that's fair. Yeah, you know, I I I just think there's a programming going on right now. Um, me being a mom and me knowing this is just what I gotta do. Um so I there's not even a thought into it, actually. You know what I mean? I just do it.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Yep, that's that's fair. That's a mom. I mean, that's fair. Like my feet are hurting, my back could definitely use some massaging, but we just give them ready to go right in here and get it all done.
SPEAKER_03I will say um for Mother's Day one year, I got um like a foot massager. You just put your feet in. I will use that. I can sit down with the kids, we can go over homework, we can talk, we can do all that with my feet in the foot massager. That is one thing I do like.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome. That's for sure fair. Yeah, I mean, yeah, that's for sure. I'm gonna relax and settle down while we catch up with the kids for the day. So, yeah, that that's more than fair. Have you ever had to fire a client or a hairstyle that a client wanted because it no longer fit into your boundaries, you need it for your family life?
SPEAKER_03Hmm. As far as the style or the it could be the style or the client, because you know, sometimes clients can be want to be demanding, and if there's times where you need to leave or um things you have to do, was there ever a time you had to fire a client or say, okay, we can't do that hairstyle because you know, um, yeah, so I I would I wouldn't say to fire a client, but I will say that I've had to change hairstyles, have like, you know, have them agree with me to change a hairstyle due to timing. Um, because I do have daughters that are in extracurricular activities and sports and such. And um, so we we can change styles sometimes. Usually the client really they they work with me. They will work with me because a lot of my clients they do know I have a lot of children. So they oh okay. A lot of my clients, yeah. A lot of my clients are are usually willing. They're great, they're usually willing to work with me. If they can't, if there's a style that they a particular style that they have to have, um, if that will, I'll try to find a different time, different day. Um, so that usually works, it works out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can't, I'm I'm with you on that. I can't really, well, because you know, they're thank goodness neither of us have, we have, you know, we haven't had to do that. Most of our clients that come to us, and I continue to pray that I get clients that have a commonality with um they're more than understanding. And if it is a style that's going to take a longer time, then they're okay with scheduling it on a day to give you enough time because they want the style, right? So it's like, okay, what day can you do it? Right. What day can you do? Yeah, you know, the double process color, what day, you know, can we?
SPEAKER_03get um the highlights so usually um they are more than understanding that's good that's good when you have five kids tiara when you have five kids me time can be a myth how do you find your identity outside of being a mom and a hairstylist I am firm on so I don't I don't get burnout on hair or mom life but what I do know is if I don't take time out for me and do something like go out to eat um at least after two weeks sometimes maybe after a week I'll get burnout overall right so it's mandatory it's mandatory for me to do something for myself Mondays all of my children are in school right because it's the school season but so like Mondays I'll do stuff you know for myself plan on going to see the Michael Jackson movie tomorrow while my children are in school very good very good all right yep that's the plan I usually just make sure I it's mandatory it's it's a non-negotiable for me as a mom and as a person and as a hairstylist to take time out for myself I hope listeners I hope the listeners out there that who are moms just not just heard that but they actually received that and are ready to make plans starting tomorrow yeah you know or whatever day no you gotta you gotta do for you I feel like when I am taking care of myself I'm taking care of everybody else 10 times better so it's it's it's it's a non-negotiable yeah and it's a win-win for everybody if I'm feeling better and I'm energetic and my mind is clear clear mom's yeah no stress yeah yeah then you'll they're gonna get the best out of you absolutely for sure for sure and that's that's why um I it's just I'm a strong believer that I don't even care what it is if you just want to take 15 minutes to read a book you know read four or five pages of a book that somebody recommended to you then you know do just that do that because you have to take care of this Bob Evans and had breakfast by myself and you know it it's great sometimes it's just sometimes you don't even want to go with anyone you would you don't you don't feel like talking sometimes you just want that time right and I will go sit in a restaurant and eat absolutely I mean and it's so funny because there are people who literally are I don't know what this is it's very strange to me.
SPEAKER_02I've never had this issue and I I mean I I used to think something was wrong with me sometimes but now I have a problem going anywhere by myself I really don't and there are people who literally were like well no because I can't you know I don't want to go by myself and I'm like why yeah I mean there's people who won't even go take a walk by themselves like they have to be with someone else in order to go for a walk I am will put my headphones on perfectly okay and I don't even really want to talk while I'm walking because I'm trying to get the walk done and then I'm trying to encourage myself to do a junk so I don't really even want to talk you know what I mean so and what we do for a living we talk all day all day sometimes we don't we don't want to talk that's the other part that is the other part when you're in this business and you do a lot of talking yeah if you find yourself like you know what I will call them yes in a couple days but right now we're gonna sit here and watch this movie and it is not there's not gonna be so I encouraging people if you're a person out there who you feel like you have to be with someone or have to have someone with you to go somewhere take the time to enjoy yourself take the time to go do it for you it's for you you know even if you you know okay because I've gone to the movies by myself I've traveled by myself I've just yeah like I said I thought something was wrong with me for a while because I'm like you know me and myself are having a really good time we have no problems at all yeah so I hope that I hope that you know other people will acknowledge that and and just do for yourself sometimes it doesn't have to be um it doesn't you don't always have to have company and I get it sometimes people don't want to feel alone because sometimes being alone especially if it's quiet and I've learned this because it works for me though. Yeah if you're alone and it's quiet sometimes people's mind takes them places that they don't want to go and they don't want to go you know so then they it's like no I don't want to be myself or I don't want I have learned how to sit in complete and total silence yeah because for me that's when I really get to analyze and I start thinking and ideas I can hear the ideas come to me.
SPEAKER_03That's when the creativity flows absolutely if it's too noisy you can't hear it.
SPEAKER_02I've even gotten to the point where I didn't even realize that I was doing this when I get in a car like it's I don't even turn any music on because I'm thinking like I got so much in my head it's so much going on in my head that I'm not even I don't even notice that there's no music on until the car next to me pulls up and their music is blasting I said oh okay I guess I'm supposed to be listening to something you know so so I think that sometimes that's what happens with people like they just don't want to they always want someone there or they always want some sort of distraction yeah to just to not have to be in the silence but I wish people knew sometimes that silence is healing right and necessary very necessary yes well first you gotta be I mean that is more than true that I mean that's so factual but first you got to be the person to be open to healing that's the first thing yeah nothing's gonna happen if you're not open to healing most people don't you know they don't even know what their triggers are you know what I'm saying learning what your triggers are or learning okay um okay I gotta deal with that like you have to find a way to be able to be open to that first yeah you know yeah absolutely because that I mean you gotta be open to it and then once you're open to it then it can happen but I just feel like there's so many people who stay around busyness just so that they don't have to deal with you know um anything from the past or anything that they've been running from I shouldn't say running but anything that they didn't want to face that they don't want to face or they don't want to deal with so yeah and I know you touched on this a little bit but I'm still gonna ask you again for our listeners if you got a full book of people and it's busy and you have to you know work you've scheduled it you know you have to service the clients what is your strategy for ongoing not just you know this week you're really busy next week you're more busier than you were the week before where is you know the work life balance like how do you manage to service all of these people and still you know for me just saying this for me like I just noticed like there was a time where I would just clean my entire house in one day right I get it all done start in the morning and we're and I'm not gonna stop until I get done well I can't do that now because I'm not home so now as peace and a partner so how do you still get everything done around the house while you're you know servicing all of these clients so I would have to actually give credit to my husband um I was blessed to meet someone that became my husband and was actually a partner a real partner um he knows my lifestyle he knows my lifestyle um and he's willing to meet me halfway he's willing to cook he's for the kids for us he's willing to clean if I haven't been able to get to the cleaning right um so I'm so I have to give credit where credit's due um yeah because it would just be me if it wasn't him and I I don't know I'll probably be somewhere looking crazy right for being it would get done but it would be it would be harder a lot harder well speaking of speaking of that I'd like to I'm gonna share a little story I went to uh my sister recommended for me to go to a store uh discount uh store and they had some shoes on sale and so I'm in the store and I'm looking around and it was on a Monday during the day not very not very busy and this gentleman you know I you know you speak and walking past how you doing or whatever and this gentleman comes up to me and he says I don't I don't like shopping I'm shopping for my wife but I don't when I shop for my wife I don't want people to think that I'm gay now I'm standing in the store and I'm looking around like it's it's it I said excuse he said I'm because I'm it's just and I'm looking around like okay this is is this candy camera is somebody filming me is this a prank and he said I I'm shopping for my wife but I don't I don't I don't want people to think that I'm gay and I'm like okay I'm not really even sure what this is or what am I supposed to do and I said well for I said well you've asked me so first of all you don't have time to worry about what people think do you I said just be a good husband and shop for your wife yeah do you know what his response to me was it's 2026 no one wants a good husband said who told you that I said I said I said that has got to be he said I don't know who told you that I said I don't know who you're talking to yeah but that has got to be the dumbest statement I've ever heard I said please don't ever say that again no I said no women want a good husband husband absolutely I said I I don't even know if I've ever even heard anyone say anything like that. And then I was in such shock I didn't even know what to say. So I mean of course I I became the unpaid worker there because now he wants me to take him over to where the women's shirts are so now I gotta take you because I got to back up what I just said. So I'm I but I'm in what is this well here's my concern if he's thinking that then there's conversations about that.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02So now these men is that what you're is that what you're thinking yeah is that what you're teaching the younger the younger men yeah that is far from the truth I don't know any woman that doesn't want a good husband and for him this and he said it with such he said it with such um what is the I don't even know he said it with such just like eh like matter of fact like eh it's 2026 women don't want a good husband i'm and I'm like trying not to like the girl that was working there was laughing because I my whole everything changed like told you that you know I'm I'm whatever so we go on I'm finished shopping and he stops back by me because I'm I'm looking for jeans now can't find shoes so of course I'm now I'm looking for something else so he stops back to the aisle that I'm at and he says look I found some shirts for my wife I said that's good and keep being a good husband so you know I say that to basically say to back up what you said is that you have a good husband you know so I wanted to throw that out there because I don't even know if I don't know if there's some sort of back social media that's going on that these men are backing themselves up and they're these are conversations but every woman I know I cannot think of one woman that's gonna say yeah just send me a bad one because that's what I want you know don't send me a bad one because that's going to be on my list no so it was it was very oh it was such a and you know in my mind as I walk into the car I'm like what's I supposed to do with that because I feel like sometimes there's a test right and I'm like was I under some sort of test was you know did I and it caught me off guard that was the thing because I wasn't ready you know I'm just yeah looking for these you know 30 sketches that they're supposed to be for you know so um so yeah so to all of our to to the listeners yeah we women want good husbands we want good husbands and we're grateful for good husbands yes grateful for them if you are a good husband if you are shopping for your wife or your daughter or your mother or your sister and I don't even know anyone that thinks that when a man is shopping like I it was it was just so very weird. So I'm I'm looking I'm still you know I'm I'm looking for anyone who could tell me if there was something I missed in that because I thought about it all day like okay yeah did I miss something or and hopefully he doesn't feel like that today I don't know it's crazy and that's and that and I'm hoping I'm hoping and and I said okay maybe you know I was in a position where God wanted me to use me to tell him that no that's not that's not it that's not that's not it please stop don't you know please don't tell anyone else that please don't please don't please don't please don't teach that don't believe it and don't teach it to anyone else like I'm thinking about all the the any type of any younger gentleman that's coming up behind him listening to that absolute don't don't please don't that is not that is further from the truth. So yeah so that caught me off guard I just wanted to throw that in there when you said you know you your husband he's a good husband and that's how you're able to get things done.
SPEAKER_03Yes work life balance absolutely if you could go back to yourself when you had zero kids and you were just starting beauty school what's the one thing you tell her which is you about the woman she has become she she that she's going to become if we're going back yes I think I would tell my my younger self right yes absolutely they're gonna do great things you're gonna you know um I enjoy both I am I enjoyed mom and my work my my work life my hair hairstylist life um um my path looked a little different um I became a mother before I went to hair school um when I graduated high school I wanted to go to hair school but me and my mom we had differences in opinion on what I should do in life so I actually became a mother I had about four of my children when I went into hair school but regardless I I made that decision of you know I'm going to quit my job that I had um because it wasn't fulfilling I wanted to follow my dream um and I did that I quit I may I planned it out to where my kids didn't feel it me quitting my job and me going to hair school they still were able to do the programs the cheerleading the things that they do every year it did not change and went to hair school it was the best decision I ever made I probably would have told yourself that the journey is not going to look like everyone else's but that journey is going to lead you to do great things. You know because now I am working my dream right and still able to be a mother and it actually gave me more time to be a mother versus my nine to five job that I had you couldn't leave and you couldn't you know things happen you can't go get the kids because you can't leave your desk and so like having changing the route and going into hair which what is what I wanted to do from the beginning actually made my mom life better.
SPEAKER_02Right so yeah I would have told my younger self uh you're gonna do great things is to come awesome that is that is I mean that's phenomenal yes absolutely like to bel to stand in that mirror and just say you're you're going somewhere yeah you're going further than what you ever thought you could and that that's one of the things I probably would have told myself when I was in school and I was like you I already I had a son I was I was you know married you know three step uh stepchildren and I but the one thing I I think that I would have said to myself is I got a lot of backlash um because I went to an all-white cosmetology school and people thought I was plum crazy I mean I got ridiculed from every angle that you could possibly think of they thought I've needed to be somewhere in a psych warp okay and I to this day I literally would go tell her you made the right decision I mean I I could not have been more thankful for all the places and all the things that I've if I wanted to know how to be able to service every culture on this planet. If you sit me in the middle of Tokyo and tell me to cut hair I want to be able to do just that yeah yeah you know so I wanted to I I honestly I thought about that like yeah I and I mean it was bad.
SPEAKER_00I mean people thought I was just like oh you're black why would a black person go to a white cosmetology school and in my mind it's like but guess what all through school I might have had three black teachers I learned math from a white teacher like I I guess I just didn't I didn't understand why yeah people felt so strongly about that no I think that was a great decision to make um yeah no I do I think it was a great decision to make I mean it's not reality is it's not just a black society there's black white you know what I mean that that's reality so we should know how to service all clients right and you kind of limit yourself if you choose not to you know if you choose not to learn for sure I mean I mean it was even at the time bless his heart I mean he he was supportive later but even my ex-husband he was like I don't really know what you're doing but I'm gonna support you I mean it's I don't really under you know well I just I just it just I knew I mean that there had there was a whole world out there and nobody could explain they were trying to tell me why I shouldn't go but you couldn't you know you couldn't tell me anything else like okay but and what else because I'm black okay and what else do you have yeah that was it they didn't have anything else to tell me you just shouldn't go okay well let me just tell you I was the kid that as soon as you said just because I was probably already doing it like if you can't give me a reason why I shouldn't be doing something then I can tell you right now yeah I was that six seven eight year old that's like okay well that must mean I'm supposed to go do it just because you can't give me a reason why I shouldn't a good reason I should say a good reason a good reason yeah well I am I am so thankful I'm so thankful and grateful um for you being on the show I hope my listeners have um learned something are ready to change their life are ready to re uh reschedule something for themselves wake up ready to command the room with every blink satise lashes deliver effortless volume and unapologetic glamour shop the look at satislash dot com because you are beautiful and enough thank you all for listening to this podcast i hope you have a wonderful week be well be at peace be inspired stay inspired and pass the inspiration along to someone else we don't air now turn it up sit back vibe out new day new talk no doubt welcome to the show welcome to the show we don't air now real life real life real sound you found your place you hold now welcome to the show welcome to the show kick off shoes let your mind run free got a story for you got a thought low key from the ride to the room you can roll with me little truth little dope little therapy late nights bright minds we can act like that put the world on pause let it all unpack you ain't gotta say much just relax lean back I'll talk You feel we match we don't head up turn it up sit back five Welcome to the show welcome to the show we don't ever real life real life real time You found your place you go down to the show welcome to the show
