Week 2: LHSAA District Realignment Reshapes Football And Fall Sports Schedules Across Acadiana

A 15U group of Acadiana kids just climbed to the top of the country and brought home a national soccer championship, and the story is bigger than one trophy. We talk about how they pull players from multiple local high schools, why chemistry can be harder than talent, and what it says about the level of youth soccer and athlete development happening right here at home.
From there we lean into fall sports that deserve more attention. Charlie shares what he heard at St. Thomas More cross-country, where returning leaders are chasing a state title and traveling out of state to get battle-tested. Then we sit down with Lafayette High head coach Tim Lemaire, a UL runner and longtime coach, to get a real preview of his roster, the “trackflation” effect that’s changing winning times, and the unglamorous summer work that builds a season in Louisiana heat.
We also get practical with a topic every fan needs: LHSAA district realignment. We explain how the numbers work, why districts shift every two years, and where Acadiana teams landed across multiple classifications, with quick notes on coaches, key players, and districts that look especially tough. SPEAKER_03Doing doing great. And, you know, I think the first episode was well received. I think people are picking up what we're laying down as far as, you know, shining a light on other sports, you know, fall sports such as cross-country, swimming, volleyball. Uh there was a great response at the end of the episode. You said, you know, reach out to us if uh you have a good storyline, and we had ideas of maybe you should interview, you know, athletic trainers, maybe you should interview referees, um, you know, different things like that, dance teams, cheerleaders. Um, we had one good report from a travel soccer team that came in that we thought, hey, this this was big, so it's worth mentioning for sure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, we're here to cover a lot of the school sports and LHSAA sports, but we're also going to get to some of those special things that happen in the Acadian area, and that's definitely one of them. So on today's show, we will talk a little bit about that national championship soccer team coming up. Uh Charlie went out and did some interviews with some cross-country, went over to St. Thomas More, talked to their coach, talked to some of their runners. They're about to get started. We're going to talk a little bit about that and have a great interview coming up with Lafayette High head cross-country coach Tim Lamaire, who was really excited to put some time in and to get his kids and his team some recognition. And then the big topic today, district realignment within the high schools. We talk we got my notes. We got the notes on the football side. We're going to touch a lot on the football side, but we also have some realignment in the other fall sports with swimming, cross-country, and volleyball. So we're going to try to get to that. If we just get to football, we'll definitely cover the realignment at our next show. So a big topic. Every two years we realign, and this was the year. So we've got some new districts out there, some teams in some different districts. So we want to get you all of that information so you know who's going to be where. And then, boy, we were honored and really happy that Christy Gray, head UL volleyball coach, took a little time to visit with us. So we're going to play that interview coming up. And then the LOS Seth Rosenswag.

SPEAKER_00We got the Cajun. We got a little information on the Cajuns as we head into that fall with Rajing Cajun football, obviously, Coach Des and all of them, Coach Gray taking some time to talk to us. The cross-country coach we're going to be tracking down. We're efforting trying to get some of those interviews. So we got a lot to cover today, Charlie. And you mentioned that soccer
Local Club Soccer Wins Nationals
SPEAKER_00team. And I had a chance to talk to uh Maneer Poca, who was the head coach of that soccer team, LSU Crew Rush, the first time in history, a national championship is a 15-U team that wound up winning the championship. So I'd like to mention those kids right now. And it's a it's a number of local high schools where these kids are coming together to play on that club side. And uh man, to go win a national championship, the best in the country in your age group, that's big.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, these travel teams are almost like all-star teams, like your two, three best kids from each each high school all get together, and uh sometimes it it's hard to put that chemistry together, but seems like this this uh 15-year-old group of young men did it did it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so let's mention some of their names and where they play. St. Thomas More had three players: Nicholas Schult, Pierce Peret, and Luke Lambaugh, Turlings, Hudson Boudreaux, Ethan Wilson, Drake Gibson, and Paul Crochet, Catholic High and New Iberia, Carter Burgess and Kobe Mano, Ascension, Lane Girard, Lafayette High, Gavin Osland, and Philip Cretien, Ash, Kieran Morrow, Andrew Crenshaw, and Orca, Joshua Esquivel and Carter Landry. So putting all those teams together, putting all those eighths.
SPEAKER_03Eight different high schools, I believe.
SPEAKER_00On one team. And then the head coach with no assistant coach, Munir Poca, a local high school coach, coached at Ascension for a number of years. Now he's the head coach at St. Thomas More, moving over to the Cougars over the last couple of years. So he did not have an assistant coach. And he said, this team has been together for three years. You know, and again, you're taking these kids, no matter how talented you are, you have to continue. You have to teach them how to play as a team. That's right. Because if they don't play together and they don't gel, so three years together leading up to this national championship, uh, very few players were added during that three-year stretch. And Munir Polka said in the beginning of the season, he felt like this team could be special and they were capable of great things. All of these kids worked worked extremely hard and were awarded for it, which is a national championship. So, congratulations to Munir Polka, Crew Rush, LA Crew Rush, and all of those guys over there, they do a great job. They run a great program, and obviously now they're on the national map.

Cross-Country Season Preview At STM
SPEAKER_00And they are as we transition from soccer into cross-country. I know you had a chance to go over to St. Thomas More. What kind of info did you get from them on their cross-country season? You talked to their coach and a couple of their runners.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, our cross country is always sponsored by a city club of River Ranch. And I got to interview uh the coach, Coach Uatnay, been with the program for quite a while, four or five years. Um just kind of talked about kind of the summer grind and all the things they they did. And and like Lafayette High, just kind of getting in the last few years of flexibility and strength training, getting in the weight room also. Uh so he kind of explained all the things that they did over the summer, got a big freshman group for boys. Um, but he was really excited about his girls' team. They came out second in state last year, and their two best runners are returning seniors. So I got to talk to Abby Mendoza and Mia Sestra. And I mean, they they didn't hesitate to say we want to win it all. Like we we have high goals. They're traveling. I think they got a meet in uh Alabama, a meet in Mississippi, uh, to get them ready to run that state championship in Nacketish. So excited, excited to cover cross country. Look, there's just a lot of talented kids. Uh I know a lot of the coaches say it they just keep getting better and better. Times are going down and down, and and what what it was a winning time 10 years ago is like a fifth or sixth place time right now. So excited to cover cross-country this fall.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, definitely. And um, you know, we'll head to some of the meets. We're gonna try to get some pictures, some interviews as they uh get cranked up. I know Lafayette High and Coach Lemaire is gonna talk a little bit about it in our interview that we're about to run. Uh September 12th is their first meet, and they're gonna be heading up to Bosier. So a lot of those teams through August continuing to put in those miles, continuing to uh get better, get faster, and then um early September those meets will start. So we're really looking

SPEAKER_00forward to that. And then and now we've got our Ligio Insurance Coach's corner, where we are gonna interview head Lafayette High coach. He's a head coach for boys and girls, ran at UL, coached at UL. You'll hear a little bit about his background. So we have Tim Lamaire on, uh head coach from Lafayette High. So, Tim, thanks for your time, man.
SPEAKER_02Well, thank you for having me. I appreciate that very much. Uh giving a little cross-country some love.
SPEAKER_00That's right. That's what we're all about, man. We want to get to some of those sports and kids and coaches of those sports that normally don't get that coverage here in the Acadiana area. So we appreciate you joining us on the Ligio Insurance interview today. So, coach, let's just start with a little bit about your background. Um, I know you were a runner back in the day and a big time runner. Where were you? Uh, talk a little bit about your college career and then uh your coaching stops and how long have you been at Life Heat High?
SPEAKER_02Okay, well, I I ran um high school track and uh one year of cross country at Delcombe High School, and then I went to UL, same time you were there. Uh I walked on and um ended up earning a scholarship. And by the time that I graduated, I ended up on full scholarship, uh, was all conference in cross country, um, and had some top three finishes um at the conference meet indoors and outdoors. Uh so that was pretty much college. Um from there I uh did something out of education and then came back to coaching. Uh I coached at UL for uh 15 years uh under Coach Lençon. He gave me my first coaching job, and I was very grateful, uh, enjoyed that thoroughly, uh, had a little success. We won a conference championship uh in cross country on the men's side uh back in 2004. And uh from there, when my boys got to high school at Lafayette High, I moved over to Lafayette High and have been coaching there ever since.
SPEAKER_00Well, that's great, coach. Um, yeah, I do I remember some of those uh some of those days back at UL and you being there in a great track and field and cross-country program. Um and we still do uh there at UL, and we'll cover them in the spring. Let's get to Lafayette High cross-country. Um talk a little bit about um who you have on your team this year. Um what what are you looking for in some of these the times from from some of your boys and your girls? Are you boys and girls, head coach?
SPEAKER_02Yes, I do both.
SPEAKER_00That's correct. Talk a little bit about some of your um uh some of your runners, some of your elite runners, what times are they looking to to produce this year? And then maybe talk a little bit about your senior class and those leaders that are out there leading the underclassmen.
SPEAKER_02Um okay, so um I'll I'll go ahead and start with um, I guess with the guys. Uh I have a lot of guys returning from last year. We finished seventh in Division I. Um we have uh I'd say an elite runner. Um he broke 15 minutes last year for three miles. Uh we're looking for him to go faster this year. That's Maddox Tobert. Um we have a couple of young guys that should be somewhere in the mid-15s. Um uh sophomore and actually two sophomores um should be in the mid-15s. We have a senior who's an incredible leader. Uh, he'll be somewhere probably in the low 16s. Um and then from there we have it's it's kind of cloudy at that point, uh, as far as for who's gonna be five, six, and seven. We have a whole bunch of kids that could fill those spots. Uh hopefully we can find someone that can uh close the gap and be pretty close to the first four. And if we can do that, then we're looking at potentially uh you know top five finishing division one, which is pretty tough. I mean, the kids I have now, uh things have gotten crazy these days. The kids I have now, we probably could have come close to winning a state championship when I first started laughing high. And now we're just fighting for death. So uh they call that trackflation, uh, where um you know times have just gotten crazy and kids are running faster. Um, I think kid uh coaches are really um the ones that that are all in, I guess passionate about it, are are um you know, their knowledge and and all of that about cross-country and training has really gone through the roof. And uh, you know, kids starting to run fast and they're kind of pulling everybody with them, you know. Um so on the guy's side, hopefully, you know, we can uh accomplish that. Uh on the girls' side, we we we lost uh a couple of years ago. We were pretty solid. Um and through graduation uh last year and this year, uh last year and the year before. Um we we the girls are kind of thin, they don't have as much depth as the guys. Um Morgan Tavares is our number one runner. Um and not far behind her is Abigail Abear. Um, those are probably the most consistent runners we had uh that are returning from the year before. There were 12th last year at state, and uh we have some young kids that are running well right now. So hopefully we can uh sneak in maybe the top 10 uh for for division one on the girls side. And uh you know it's exciting at the beginning of the year. You you you always seem to find that one kid that just comes out of nowhere. And uh and so I'm sitting here right now thinking, okay, which kid will that be? And uh I guess we'll know more in in a in a couple of months.
SPEAKER_03All right, coaches uh Charlie Jouvert. Uh where do you I know y'all run in the Cadiana Park a lot around here, but uh any other places, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, uh that y'all are comfortable running at?
SPEAKER_02So I I try to find competition as much as I can. So we're gonna open up in Bozier City um at the Border Dash Parkway hosts that meet, and your top teams from the north that are basically in our region, uh go to that meet. So uh we run that meet over there. Um it's also the meet we're gonna run our regional meet at as well. So we we're gonna open up there and then we run out in Dusau at Seavers Airfield uh the next weekend. Uh that's pretty much flat and fast. Um you know, it's like a road racing. It's a really quick course. And uh after that, we're looking this year probably uh go to MacNeese. And then uh the weekend after that, we're gonna be taking some kids to uh the Chili Pepper Festival, cross-country festival up in Fayetteville. And that's uh it's the University of Arkansas's home meet, and it's a huge collegiate meet, high school meet, they have open races, middle school races, and uh definitely get some competition there. And then after that, we will go to Catholic Baton Rouge run at Highland Park over there, and that's a very competitive meet, kind of the who's who of what you're gonna see at state will be there. Uh we have our home meet at Acadian. Well, the SNL meet, uh, which is uh named after Doug Stewart, uh Tom Nolan, and Charles Lancel. So we just use the letters SNL. So for you older folks, you know you're familiar with what maybe what the saying SNL is, but uh so we have that meet, and we're gonna try to run that meet this year at Moncas Park on the same course that we're gonna have the national cross-country championship youth championships in December.
SPEAKER_03That's a lot, a lot of variety and a a lot of uh a lot of traveling for the kids to be looking forward to.
SPEAKER_02Well, I'm I'm very fortunate um the kids that run cross country are are tend to be your kids that do really well in school. They're involved evolved in a lot. Uh they're in everything, they're in bands, they're in course, they do other sports, they're they're in clubs, and uh you know it it's it's crazy because um since I've been coaching at Lafayette High, I've never had a practice where every kid made it to practice. Wow, yeah, because it's always like, for example, we my my senior leader on the guy side, um Henry Swan, he he's he's gonna be the assistant drum major in the band. Uh but but this guy spends hours and hours practicing with the band, but the days he can't come to practice, he's out there doing the workout by himself and getting the other kids that are in band that run cross-country to do the workout with him. Um and so these kids traveling, missing school, if needed, uh, it's not a big deal. Um, they're fun to work with. I I enjoy the heck out of it. Uh I brag about my team to other coaches from other sports all the time. You know, we don't have the drama that um other sports have. We're lucky in that when we go to a cross-country meet, everybody participates 100% of the time. Everybody runs a race. And and we can compare apples to apples. Um, times don't lie. And uh so we try to travel and and get the kids some competition um because you know that you you can't get that false sense of we're good if you're competing against people that are you know not as competitive. And so we look forward and we travel.
SPEAKER_00Yes, indeed. Coach, one more for you, coach, talk a little bit about what y'all did this summer. Where did y'all train? How many days a week? And uh, you know, I know you have to get acclimated to that heat and make sure those guys and girls are hydrated and just talk a little bit about the summer as we wrap that up heading into the fall.
SPEAKER_02Okay, well, we um we meet every day, Monday through Friday. And uh because kids come and go going on vacation, different camps and things like that. Um, I'm like, I'm here every day, come when you can. So we started uh the first week of June, and um, you know, we meet every day. We we would meet at Lafayette High. Uh the days we're gonna do weights, and then we do a little something on the track. Uh, and then other days were mostly at Gerard Park. You know, sometimes we'll go to Moncas Park, sometimes we'll go to Kadiana Park. Uh I don't like them running on the road. Uh I just don't feel comfortable um in the city. I mean, when I was in high school, we ran on the country roads and it was no big deal. But um in the city, uh I try to keep them in a contained area within a park where uh they can get to me quickly if they need something, or I can get to them quickly. And so uh during the summer is mostly just getting the miles in, getting a base, um, getting used to the heat. Um and because I tell them, you know, you need to come to practice now because if you're out of shape and you're trying to get into shape and it's heat index of 100, 110, that's gonna be horrible. And so they're usually pretty good about coming when they can. And uh, you know, we have uh have that saying, summer miles bring false miles. So uh, you know, summers when it happens.

SPEAKER_00Yeah, and a lot of our veteran coaches are that to those coaches. They don't want to just hog everything they have. A lot of times they're willing to share uh and and uh mentor some of those young coaches, whether they're at their school or not. Uh that's one of the great things about the Acadiana area. So we appreciate him being on. That's a little bit about our cross country man. It's it's about to be here. You know, they're gonna get started in September, and we're gonna continue to put out interviews. So, yeah, he he's very interested in that forecast, you know, having the kids know uh if it's gonna be cool enough, having the parents know if it's gonna be cooling off throughout the night, things like that. It's and it's funny that you know, football season starts, it's so hot, and then by the end of the season, you you're freezing out there in the stands.
SPEAKER_00Yes, indeed. And then last but definitely not not least, uh swimming. Cola aquatics. Um we had a chance to to visit with some of those swimmers the other day. Coach Sarah, Coach Colleen lined them up for us. So go to social media if you want to see some interviews about the swimming season, which is a fall sport. Um so we had some great, and I had a chance to ask a few of them hey, is this your first media? Uh interviewed the assistant coach at ESA. So please go check those out. SPEAKER_03Yeah, and we're gonna be getting some of these coaches uh in for the uh coaches, Coach's Corner, you know, some of these swimming coaches. We're definitely gonna line up some of those interviews coming up soon.
SPEAKER_00We definitely want to do that.
How LHSAA Realignment Works
SPEAKER_00And now our big topic of the day. Um we want to talk about district realignment. District realignment happens every two years. The LHSAA uh gets enrollment numbers from every school, and what they'll do is they'll get the numbers from last year as we head into this year, last year's enrollment, and then they'll also take any middle schoolers that played up because some schools that are pre-K through 12 or middle schools, they do allow them to play. So they add the previous year's middle schoolers to last year's enrollment nine through twelve, line them up, break it up, try to put an even number of teams in each district, each division, and uh athletic directors and principals have a chance to take a look at their initial proposal and and maybe make some proposals of their own or some suggestions to the LHSAA, and then they'll put it out. So every two years we realign, and this year is a brand new uh year for the districts and for the divisions when we talk about swimming uh cross-country. A lot of times we'll go along with the football districts. So, as we're talking about these football districts, a lot of times those districts will hold cross-country meets. Um, the other two sports, um volleyball goes divisions, so we're gonna talk a little bit about divisions and also swimming is divisions. So we'll talk a little bit about that next week. But this week we definitely want to talk about football and where everybody ended up, and we're gonna start with our 1A
1A And 2A District Breakdown
SPEAKER_00schools.
SPEAKER_031A to 5A.
SPEAKER_001A to 5A. So starting in 1A District 6, uh we have Birchman's, we have J.S. Clark, one of the teams I got to interview at LCA, North Central, O.C., Sacred Heart, St. Ed's, and Westminster Opalousis. And I went to see J.S. Clark when they played their seven-on-seven, Coach Justin Kelly in his second year, and they've got some men on that team. Oh, yeah, and some great athletes. They got speed, and Coach Kelly does a real good job. I was really impressed with what they were doing out there. Um, Opalousis Catholic, new coach, Coach Kent Mason, a big wrestling guy also. He'll take that wrestling program over. And remember the name, Caleb Tezano. His older brother was a wide receiver, just graduated. He's going to U.S. C. And that's wide receiver U, because you got Keon Coleman, and now you got Tezano going to U.S. C, but his little brother is going to take over at quarterback. So OC looking to have a good year. Sacred Heart has first year coach, Coach Derek Landry, who I know well is a very good coach. And I also went to Westminster Opalousis. They got some men in that program too with a lot of offers.
SPEAKER_03Well, they they were they were the uh you know the queen of the ball last year, district champs, and didn't lose a whole lot of seniors, so they're they're kind of the top runners there uh with maybe OC right behind them.
SPEAKER_00And we move on to District 7, still in 1A, uh Ascension, Centerville, Central Catholic, Gaydon, so that's Central Catholic in Morgan City, Gaydon, Hansen, Highland, VC, the Screaming Eagles, and then a newish school, been in the district a couple of years, Westminster Lafayette. So that's actually a combined um district because last year uh ascension was only four teams. So I know they petitioned and a couple of other schools petitioned for more teams. So now they got eight. They got eight teams in there.
SPEAKER_03Yes, then uh you got Generet. Generett's in there too, huh? Yep. Highland, now Highland is not competing for district honors, so that's why a lot of people say we got an eight-team district because they're just kind of getting started into it. And they got a new coach, Donald Fugelet. He's bringing a lot of excitement. I got to visit with them. They actually have uh uh an offensive lineman, uh Lane Kubiak, that is uh getting some some looks and you know, small school like that. If you're good, those college coaches are gonna find you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so Ascension Coach Jay DiMaggio, um Eli Groh will be the new starting quarterback there. Central Catholic joins this district years ago. They were all in the same district. Central Catholic always athletic. C. L. Grogan, his sixth year there. Um Gennarette always athletic, and of course VC Screaming Eagles. You can't overlook them.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you look at at Gennarette, I mean, they they have four kids that are getting looked at for college. Uh good uh D D back named uh Nysir Jackson, uh running back Devin Duyon, uh big tackle, uh offensive tackle Blair Lewis, and just a straight athlete uh Mo Lee Watkins.
SPEAKER_00And now we move to two-way, District 8, Catholic High, New Iberia, Delcombe, Franklin, LCA, Laureville. That's the team there in District A. Of course, Coach Matt Dezimo, longtime uh coach and former head coach at Ascension, quarterback John Parker Robinson, six foot one eighty-five, very athletic, and they love their center over there, Luke Hewitt, 6'3 ⁇ 265.
SPEAKER_03Yep, and you got the uh the Brody's over there coaching in Delcombe. They got a pretty good uh quarterback with uh Rick's Roban.
SPEAKER_00Yep, Franklin has had a run. Uh Tremaine Johnson, love him, got to know him real well while I was at Ascension, a really good coach. Running back Broderick Joseph expected to have a big year. LCA, you know you're gonna be athletic with speed all over the all over the field for the Knights.
SPEAKER_03They're the front runner. I I did get to visit them in a um speed and agility kind of training and very well-oiled machine that they got over there. They got um Josh Williams, he's getting recruited as an athlete. The running back Caden Bellard, they got quite a few. Ryan, and you know his brother went to LSU, he's a defensive back. Um that Caden Bellard had 25 touchdowns. You like to have uh someone with 25 touchdowns last year coming back.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, put them on your fantasy team, John. Laurelville Tigers, Terry Martin, ninth year great guy, great coach over there. West St. Mary, Kendall Mouton in his third year, hoping to improve there. So that's the 2A district. Eight, district seven. Basile, Kinder, Lake Arthur, Notre Dame, and Welsh. I know you had a chance to visit with Notre Dame.
SPEAKER_03There was some tears that were shed when Notre Dame moved into that district because uh Notre Dame, again, is just a powerhouse. I mean, Lewis Cook, 29th year there. He's been at, you know, Crowley, he's been at UL. You know, Jake Delome said last year that he was the reason that he chose UL. You know, he looked up to uh Coach Cook so much. Um just uh a true legend right here, right here in uh our area. Got to visit with them, got to interview their their uh middle linebacker, Jack Vondenstein. You know, that's that they got that German blood over there with Enam Crowley. And uh, I mean he he he's he's a man. Like he he's gonna get plenty of good D1 looks and uh uh excited to watch Notre Dame play. And they're gonna be our uh game of the week week two coming right here to Church Point. So uh very excited. But you know, you know, you'll hear some of this talk in volleyball that they're just head and shoulders above the other teams in that district.
SPEAKER_00Yep, moving on to District 6, still in 2A, a Voyals, Menard, Oakdale, and Port Barry. So four teams, you know, a small district, those guys will have to find more games early on in the season, and then they'll get to compete in their uh district games. And I know you talked to Port Barry.
SPEAKER_03Port Barry's kind of the only only uh team in the that we cover in our immediate area, part of our 43 uh high schools that we cover in the Cadiana Sports Network. First year coach Mike Robinson, for former Marine, he's out there kind of you know barking at those guys, getting them motivated. Uh small squad, you know, numbers are down. Sometimes it happens like that. Coach leaves and you bring in a new coach, and it takes a little while to build those numbers up. So uh even though they're a two-way, two-way uh squad, you know, their numbers are down like they would be a one A squad probably. But, you know, I I like what I saw out there, interviewed quite a few of the players. You again, you can go back and find that on our social media, Instagram, Facebook, those players uh from Port Barry, and they were fired up. And we talked last week about district championships don't matter. That senior that I talked to, that was the first thing he said is is we want this district championship. There's only four teams in our district, and we we feel like we can go get it.
3A And 4A District Storylines
SPEAKER_00Yep. Moving on to 3A, District 5, and a local Acadiana legend, Brent Endest, is back. He will be at Abbeyville, Abbeyville High, the Wildcats there. Uh Erath in that district, Eric Leblanc, another local guy, local legend, ninth year there at Erath, Kaplan and St. Martinville. And I had a chance to go interview Coach Endest, and a few of those interviews are up on our social media, and he's excited about it. His numbers are a little down for a 3A school, but he hopes to build up that program again.
SPEAKER_03Well, you know, he runs that kind of hybrid wing T, and the first thing he did was like establish who his best athlete was, and it was a wide receiver that was getting looks from a lot of D-1 schools, and he said, You you're gonna be quarterback, son, because we're gonna need you running that ball. We're gonna need you, you know, doing that run pass option, throwing the ball when you can't, and he's getting a lot of good looks now. Uh he'll probably go as an athlete, kick returner, stuff like that. Jacoby Campbell.
SPEAKER_00Ereth has a really good quarterback, too. Landon Durwine, 6'1, 210, and St. Martinville, first year head coach James Dortez, only four seniors. So a couple of those programs rebuilding, and we'll see how that district turns out. Uh District 4 and 3A, Mammu, Northwest, Pine Prairie, and Ville Platte.
SPEAKER_03Well, you I think you got to see Northwest. They they did real well on those some of the 7 on sevens this uh summer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they they got athletes all over the field. Saw them at St. Thomas More in that big 7 on seven. They had a big school and a small school and and really impressive.
SPEAKER_03So some some of those 7 on sevens, they were just throwing it up to that big receiver. They got six foot three, one eighty-five, Marquez Davis. Get that you get down close to the five-yard line. You want to just toss it up to him. Go get it, big fella.
SPEAKER_00Coach Chris Edwards in his 13th year, I'm sure we'll uh utilize him. 3-A District 4, Church Point, Crowley, Eunice, Iota from over in that area there, Coach Rob Poole in his fourth year at Church Point.
SPEAKER_03He he's putting he's putting together a program, man. I went out there and uh they have a lot of numbers, probably more numbers, he said, than he was coached previously coaching at Lafayette High. He said they probably have more numbers than when he was at Lafayette High. Uh, they got a very, very solid senior quarterback, uh, Grant Bernard, a real solid uh leader. And I mean, they they look like a serious squad. And when I mentioned Notre Dame coming in for the game of the week, they didn't flinch, man. They they really want to see how far this team has improved whenever Notre Dame comes to town in week two.
SPEAKER_00Yep, Crowley with a new head coach, Joel Sinclair, their quarterback, and he's he's all everything. Jamichael Walters, uh, and then Eunice and Iota, you know, always solid. They've got a seventh-year coach and uh Iota's coach going into his fifth year, so that ought to be a competitive district with only four teams, and every game is gonna be really important. Uh District five in foray, we have Beau Shane, Brobridge. Is that the only two?
SPEAKER_03No, no, we've got Karen Crow. There you go, I'm I'm on the sheet. Cecilia. Yeah, and Karen Crow, Karen Crow's loaded. You know, it that that's gonna come down to Karen Crow and Cecilia. You know, Cecilia played well last year, made a deep run in the playoffs. But Karen Crow, they got a new field house out there. I I got to visit with uh coach Gavin Peters, and I mean he personally runs that weight room. Uh he makes sure those kids are uh hydrated. They have a nutrition center. It's the only nutrition center I've seen around here. You know, make sure those kids get in like protein bars, protein shakes before they leave uh after a good workout. And just the precision. I mean, they left that workout room. I mean, you could measure like this Olympic bar was two inches from the from the rail, and every other Olympic bar was two inches from the rail. And and those little details in the summer pay dividends in the fall.
SPEAKER_00There's no doubt. Strength and conditioning and putting those kids in the right spots. Beauchane, Bro Bridge, Karen Crowe, Cecilia, Lavonia, and Opalousis. Coach Harry Coleman in his second year had a chance to walk through that locker room and interview. They've got some guys over there too, some men in that locker room, and they're looking to have a big year.
SPEAKER_03Coach Coleman, he talks the talk because he he's walked the walk. You know, he's he's played played Pro Ball, he's played, you know, big big time uh D1 athlete himself. I want to double back on the this Karen Crow because I've seen publications that said they might have the best defense across the state, like the and the quickest defense. They do a lot of like timing drills and things like that. Uh, and maybe the fastest, one of the fastest running backs in uh Seagon Woods. And I met the defensive tackle that's being recruited. His first name is Mr. His real like government name, Mr. Finney, and I called him Mr. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_00Speed kills, man, legs feed the wolf. That's gonna be fun to watch those guys fly around. And uh they're gonna be some really good defenses, and Karen Crow, definitely a team to watch. Uh, foray, District 4, moving on with 4A, Turlings, second year coach Michael Corville over there. Westgate is special, man. I had a chance to go see them play last year. Young dogs, they're sophomores, they compete, they're well coached. Brian Antoine in his 14th year has a loaded team at Westgate. So Turlings, Westgate, Arca, Lafayette, and Northside.
SPEAKER_03Lafayette Renaissance, yeah. Uh yeah, Westgate, I mean, it is widely known that they have the most D-1 recruits. I mean, it's uh it's crazy that that a team like that, you know, they they might end up with double-digit D-1 signings uh come December.
SPEAKER_00Yes, indeed. ARCA with coach Travis Blaze in his fourth year, relatively new school, but definitely having good years. Um at Lafayette Renaissance, and then Northside, Brandon Green in his first year, and he's got a do-it-all guy too, and Chase Dugai. District three, when we look at 4A. We got Lagrange, Lake Charles College Prep, Leesville, North Vermilion has moved to a more westerly district, which they are happy about. I had a chance to talk to Coach Moy, and then also Rain. So I know Coach Moy is excited about his quarterback. He's young, he's tall, man. I had to view like that. What's I do with a lot of people? He's about 6'3 that can sling it, so he's really excited about his team and is excited about his seniors.
SPEAKER_03That uh Lake Charles Prep Trailblazers, they're they're they're probably gonna be the uh cream of the crop in this district. They they got a very strong, uh, strong team, good quarterback in uh Dylan Vital, 6'3, 225. We're seeing a lot of sizable quarterbacks, 215, 220, 225 in high school. You know, you go into college, they're gonna put another 10, 15 pounds on you, probably.
SPEAKER_00No doubt about it. So that's another competitive district to keep an eye on. And Charlie, you got district three right there, St. Thomas More and those guys.
SPEAKER_03Well, yeah. Um District 3, St. Thomas More. This is an eight-team district right here. Uh you got Sulfur, New Iberia, Sam Houston, Southside, Acadiana, Barb, and Lafayette High. I know you got a chance to visit with uh Coach Doug Dotson at Acadiana and uh Coach Heron at Lafayette High, right?
SPEAKER_00Yep. Uh Coach Dotson was at the seven-on-seven, and he goes, Man, I don't know why we're here. Run the ball. You know, they're gonna run that ball and they're gonna run it well. Um they started out slow last year and then they really got going, and then uh Coach Steven Heron returns to his alma mater, goes Coach Lafayette High, and boy, they've got a quarterback who is uh committed. Sonye. Richard Richmond Sonia.
SPEAKER_03Yep, another another another thick quarterback, 205. But you know what what what Lafayette I is excited about is they got some quality Como transfers. Um that being one of the probably the biggest recruits as running back is Jaden Celestine over there. And Acadiana, I've been hearing this kid, he's been running the ball since he was a freshman, Deshaun Lightfoot. Great name for a running back, Deshaun Lightfoot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. A ton of talent in the Acadena area. We can't get to everybody, but we wanted to let you know what those districts looked like, and we'll continue to promote those kids. Again, that's a cross-country district. We're gonna talk a little bit about uh swimming and volleyball next week and their districts, maybe some realignment and maybe some teams moving districts, but uh I know some of those rivalries will continue. We talked about the week one rival where Turlings goes to St. Thomas More in our first game of the week.
SPEAKER_03And I I'll just kind of close it out with saying uh don't let don't sleep on Southside. I think Southside might might surprise a lot of people in that district this

SPEAKER_00Yes, and now we have another Ligio coaches interview where we were lucky enough uh to have Coach Christy Gray, the U.L. volleyball coach.
SPEAKER_03It was kind of like a Cajun corner slash Ligio insurance, uh Cajun Corner and Coach's corner. So I'm excited about that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we appreciate her taking the time. So uh coach, thanks for your time and thanks for joining us here on the Acadianus Sports Network podcast.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. I'm happy to be here.
SPEAKER_00Let's first talk a little bit, Coach, about your summer. What did you do with with the young ladies? And um, did you have any strengths or weaknesses that you had to address in the offseason?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so our um our sports are actually extremely unique in the fact that we don't have summer access to our team. Um, you would think with us starting so quick in August that we would, but anything that we do in the summer is voluntary. So we do have our girls' report back in July. They're able to work out with our joint coach, but um, they're on their own for just captain led practices, open gyms, if that's what they choose to do. Um so spring is our really um where we hit it heavy with um our off season and with everything that we're trying to work through. So our word this past spring was maturity. Um, and that was. In all regards, on the court, off the court, we had our entire team here, except for one transfer in the spring. So we were working a lot through just, you know, maturity, our team camaraderie, and just building the unit that we have. Um, I told them all spring, you know, we're very fortunate to have our entire team here. So when we do report back in August, everything should be pretty seamless for us. And so we're here now. We are into our second week of fall camp. And um, yeah, they've done a great job so far. I know that they're getting pretty tired with our two-a-days. They lift three times a week, and then we have two-a-days with volleyball. Um, so yeah, we're excited with the product that we have, but I know they're exhausted.
SPEAKER_00And and talk about your little turnover in the in the transfer portal era, and uh, what is your philosophy when it comes to that? How many did y'all lose last year to graduation or transfer? And then how many new faces do we have around Raging Cage and volleyball?
SPEAKER_01Definitely. So we we actually had a great year with that. I would say we only had one senior. Uh, she cried she graduated this spring, and then we lost one to the portal due to family issues. She wanted to go back closer to home um and be closer to family. And then there was one that we needed to part ways with. Um, so technically we lost three. Uh, we were able to retain the rest that we had. Um, and so we brought in three transfers at the semester and then one more transfer into this fall. And so um, you know, transfer portal, I have a love-hate relationship with it. Uh, we preach to our girls when we bring them in. Are we have three standards that we live by, and that's academics, community, and volleyball. And so when they come here, we want them coming here and leaving with a degree. Things do come up, um, whether it's on our side, whether it's on theirs. But we try to wait, we try to stay away from transfer portal conversations as much as possible. But, you know, sometimes, sometimes it happens. And we have been fortunate enough to be able to get some really good players out of the out of the portal. Um, you know, we had a transfer within conference from JMU come in. We had one from UTSA come in, we had one from Arkansas come in, and then we had a JUCO transfer from my previous school, Odessa College. So I'm very happy with the transfers that we were able to pick up. I think um they bring a lot to just what we're trying to enhance in terms of specific positions, but then also give us some depth and some others. So definitely happy, but again, it's it's a love hate.
SPEAKER_03Coaches Charlie Jobert jumping in. I know you guys had a pretty good season uh last year. Can you give us a quick recap on that and uh what's some goals to improve on that this year?
SPEAKER_01Definitely. You know, for me, I always want to do better. Um, I am that one coach that is uber competitive, and I, you know, have a very hard time thinking it's ever good enough. Um, but I do try to focus on the good as much as possible. And I do think there is a lot of good to take from last year. Um one thing that I do love about our team is the energy that we're able to provide. And I think with that, we've been able to build such an amazing fan base that we're able to feed off of. We've broken multiple attendance records. And I think that we've just built a product that people are excited to come watch. And I always say if if you've come to watch us one time, you're gonna continue to come just from the experience that you and your family or whoever might have. And so going into this season, I am extremely excited about it. Um, I think there's a lot of things that there are to be excited about. One, of course, our product, but some of the things that we're pushing this season, this is the 50th anniversary for the volleyball program itself. So we are gonna push that narrative very heavy. And then we are also pushing 10,000 fans. Last year we were just shy of 10,000, which in our facility is huge. We barely fit over a thousand, and that is with adding extra seating onto the court. And so I do think it's possible. We have 14 home matches, and you know, if people continue to show up like they have in the past, um, we're gonna beat that record. And knowing the product that we have, I think that people are gonna be excited to see what we're able to do this season.
SPEAKER_03I know uh one way to get those fans in the seats is to uh have a good fan day, uh, good attendance at fan day and the intra squad uh scrimmage. Can you tell us kind of what's gonna go down on Saturday?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. I'm actually excited to tag team this day with that fan day event and then ours as well. Um originally we were looking at fan day being on Sunday, and then they asked if we could move it to Monday, or I mean that Saturday. And so I said absolutely, uh as long as we can still make the time work with our scrimmage. So we're gonna hit fan day that morning, this Saturday morning, and then at two o'clock, we will go have our red and white scrimmage. And so I'm hoping, you know, I can talk about the same things with the fans that show up there. It's, you know, this is the 50th anniversary of the program. We are shooting for 10,000 fans. And if everybody can, you know, come support, really meet the team there, I think it'll get them excited for the season and continue to come out.
SPEAKER_00All right, continuing to visit with uh head volleyball coach, Coach Christy Gray. Coach, talk a little bit about uh your schedule this year. Any uh big games that you're looking forward to, whether it's home or away, and then maybe a little projection about the Sun Belt.
SPEAKER_01Definitely. So there's a few matches that come to mind. You know, we start out on the road at Texas State, they are always a competitive match for us. Um, with them no longer being in the conference. I do think that they are always gonna be a really good match for us to potentially have on the schedule. Just they have a great culture of being competitive. And so hoping to continue that. But then also that weekend, we're gonna be able to play OU, which I think will be a great test for us early on. Um, they they are a really good program. And one thing that they do along with us is they run a really fast tempoed offense. Um, and they are extremely fast. I think it's gonna be a test for us for multiple reasons. Um, another match, it would be home. I think a big one that we haven't really had at home in EK since I have been here is a P4 match. We're gonna have Mississippi State over. So excited about that one. I'm hoping to have a really great fan base there as well. But um, we're gonna bring Memphis in. UT Arlington will be here. Um, another one on the road is Florida State. I think that's gonna be another great test for us. I try to build out our schedule similar to what our conference is gonna look like um in terms of competitiveness. So then going into conference, um, I am excited to see what's gonna happen. You know, it's gonna be interesting to see how the cards fall with everybody, just because a lot of the teams are going to be very different. You have some that's, you know, rosters have changed to where they're younger, some have graduated um key players. And so my my goal is to finish top two, top three, um, top two on the West. I think it's very doable. Uh, top three going into the conference tournament, uh, I think is, you know, a very good goal for us to shoot. But I mean, we talk about winning a ring. That is our motto this year. We have an acronym for that. And so, you know, that is the ultimate goal every single year. But, you know, we talk about day in, day out. There's more that goes into it than by just saying it, you've got to come in, you've got to put in the work, you've got to take the ownership and have the accountability with each other to be able to go be elite and win championships. And so we're preaching that to our team every single day, hoping that you we keep taking the steps forward to be in a championship match in the end.
SPEAKER_00And then maybe a few names, Coach, maybe you know, a returner that that you're glad to have back, and maybe a newcomer that might surprise some of the rage in Cajun Nation uh this fall.
SPEAKER_01Definitely. I think we have a few key players back. Um, we have three seniors that are going to be extremely important for our success. Our libero, Kennedy Gustafson, is, you know, first to come to mind. She kind of took over that role as the starting libero last year, and she has just continued to get better and better each year. She is, I believe, the heart and soul of our defense. She does a phenomenal job just taking ownership of the back row. Um, and then running the offense for us. We have both Riley Garris and Nene Hawkins. Um, you know, we've run a 6'2 offense last year, the way that it's looking right now. We could be in a 6'2, we could be in a 5'2, uh, potentially a 5'1, but right now it's looking like it's gonna be a 6'2 with both of them leading our offense. Another key player that's returning for us is Lindsay Henry. She was a freshman last year. She put up phenomenal numbers from a blocking standpoint. Um, and she's grown tremendously. You know, we talk to our players all the time about the growth from first year to second year, and she already had a great freshman year. So I'm expecting big things from her this second season of hers. And then big transfer for us is Lolo Lambert. She is an outside, she came from Arkansas, she is originally from Dallas, Texas. She's one that we were recruited out of high school and unfortunately missed her, but we were able to get her once she went into the portal just by already having that relationship. And so she is she is one that's I think is gonna be, if she does what we know she can, she's one that should be up for all conference. Um, an offensive player of the year, a player of the year. She is a phenomenal athlete.

SPEAKER_03My news feed is just jam-packed with fantasy football right now. Our draft or my my uh my little league, the Raging Rookies, is Saturday night. So, fresh off of that, we're gonna uh call in uh our commissioner, last year's champion. You know, he's the commissioner and the champion. He seems like he's always winning, but he's he's our local expert. He's gonna kind of give us a rundown of on uh helping you with your fantasy draft next week, Josh Thomas.
