Can't Catch a Break: Round one-Meet the Host

There is a period in my life where I got really good at smiling. If you saw me, you probably thought I was fine. I went to work, I showed up, I laughed, and I handled what needed to be handled. And I smiled. But that smile was probably the biggest mask I've ever worn in my entire life. Because behind it, I was trying to rebuild a life while it felt like life kept finding new ways to hit me. And eventually I reached a point where I wasn't asking for everything to be perfect. I wasn't asking to win. I just wanted five minutes where something wasn't going wrong. And I wanted to catch a break. I didn't get one. I'm Reese Arthur, and this is Can't Catch a Break. This isn't a pity party podcast, and it isn't a show where we're going to sit around every week talking about everything terrible that's ever happened to us in our lives. We're going to talk about the punches because you can't understand a comeback without knowing what knocks somebody down. We will laugh about them, we will cry about them, but the punches are not the point. The comeback is the story. I want to know what happened after light hit you. Who showed up? What did you learn? What did you build? What did you have to fight through? Who did you become from all of it? And most importantly, how did you punch back? Before I ask other people those questions, I think it's only fair that I go first. So round one is mine. The first punch was my marriage ending. I was in a rough marriage, I was depressed, I was miserable, and eventually I reached a point where I knew I couldn't keep living that way. So I asked for a divorce. The next day, my ex called the police and I spent the night in jail. I remember sitting thinking, how did my life get here? I finally made a decision because I wanted my life back, and almost immediately everything got harder. After I came home, I had a stress-induced seizure. It was like my body finally reacted to everything I had been carrying on my shoulders. And somewhere in that chaos, I decided I needed a fresh start. I needed distance. I needed somewhere new, and I needed a chance to figure out who I was outside of everything that had just happened. So I moved to Chicago. I came to Chicago wanting a new life, but I didn't arrive with a clean slate. Within the first few months, I was still dealing with the legal process from what happened before I moved. I had to go through court, I had to get the case handled, and eventually get it dismissed and sealed. At the same time, the divorce was still happening. The divorce eventually became final while I was living in Chicago. And you think that would have been the moment where everything suddenly felt lighter. It was not. The first year in Chicago was hard. Really hard. Starting over can be lonely in a way people don't talk about enough. I had moved to the city where I wanted to build this new life, but emotionally I was still trying to survive the old one. I was depressed. I was trying to figure out who I was again. I was trying to make a new city feel like home. I was trying to rebuild routines, relationships, confidence, everything. And through all of it, I smiled. I could walk into a room and smile. I could go to work and smile. I could laugh with people. Then I could go home and feel completely different. That smile was the biggest mask I've ever worn. And I'll tell you how hard that period really was. My sobriety had never been tested the way it was tested during that time. There are moments when going backward would have been easier than becoming the person I was trying to become. But I didn't go back. And sometimes that's what winning around looks like. Nobody cheers, nobody even knows you want it. You just know you didn't go back. And then there was my health. Before I ever started my doctorate, I was beginning to dealing with problems with my lungs. My lungs weren't producing enough oxygen for my body. So while I was still trying to build a life in Chicago and come out of that first difficult year, I now had another medical problem to understand and manage. Another appointment, another question, another thing that wasn't part of the fresh start I had pictured. But something was good was coming too. I started my doctoral program for my PhD in behavior analysis, which, considering everything else going on, was either one of the best decisions I've ever made or prove I had completely lost my mind. Who knows? Life was basically saying, Reese, maybe simplify things. And apparently I said, absolutely, let's get a doctorate. But school mattered to me in a way that's hard to explain. So much of my life at that point involved things I hadn't chosen. I didn't choose the way the marriage ended. I didn't choose the legal process. I didn't choose the seizure. I didn't choose the lung problems, but I chose this. My doctorate belonged to my future. It gave me something to build instead of something else to survive. And I think that's where my comeback really started taking shape. Not because everything had gotten better, it hadn't. But because I was starting to build something while life was still complicated. Then, about a year after I moved to Chicago, another medical chapter started. And this was separate from the seizure. I started experiencing weakness in my legs, then weakness throughout my body. I lost a drastic amount of weight. I was in and out of hospitals, doctors, specialists, tests, more tests, more appointments, and then more tests were still needed for answers. There were surgeries, there were appointments, waiting rooms, recovery time, trying to understand what my body was doing. And all of this was happening while I was in school and still trying to build the life I had come to Chicago to create. That's when the words can't catch a break really started to mean something. Because by that point, I had made it through the marriage, I had made it through jail, I had made it through the seizure, I had moved, the legal case was behind me, the divorce was over, I had survived that first brutal year in Chicago, I had protected my sobriety, I had dealt with problems with my lungs, and somehow in the middle of all of it, I had started working towards a PhD that I really wanted. I was rebuilding, and then my legs started getting weak, then my body, then came the weight loss, hospitals, specialists, surgeries, more tests. And I remember thinking to myself, you've got to be fucking kidding me. Not because I thought I deserved a perfect life. I just wanted five minutes where something wasn't going wrong. I wanted to catch a break. But here's the part of the story that matters more to me than people who disappointed me. My people showed up. Some people turned a blind eye, and you learn a lot about people when your life becomes inconvenient. But I'm not giving people who weren't there more space than the people who were. Because my circle carried me through parts of this. I generally don't know where I would be without them. And one of the most unexpected things to come out of all of this was what happened with my family. Before everything happened, I wasn't particularly close with my siblings. Now I talk to my brother all the time, I check in with my sisters, we've become closer. People say sometimes it takes something drastic to bring a family together. I wish it hadn't taken something drastic. But I'm still grateful for what came from it. Pain has a nasty way of making you stare at the empty chairs. Eventually I learned to look at the chairs that weren't empty. Those were my people. That was my corner. And that's why one of the questions you'll hear me ask on this show is who was in your corner? Because when you're taking punches, your corner matters. So how did I get back up? I wish I had some profound answer for you guys. I wish there was one quote, a book, a breakthrough moment where the music swelled and I suddenly knew everything was going to be okay. That's not what happened. I got back up because I had no choice. There were dark days. There were days I wanted to give up. There were days when I was exhausted from fighting through one more thing. And I didn't want somebody tell me to be resilient or how resilient I was. I didn't want another lesson. I didn't want to hear that everything happens for a reason. I wanted a fucking break. But I have my dogs. They need me. They need me so they can eat. They need me to go outside. They need me to come home and be home. They didn't care about the court or divorce some radical test or schools. They just knew I was their person. And sometimes my entire plan was stay alive, take care of the dogs, get through today, and that's it. Not thrive, not conquer the world, not turn adversity into my superpower. Just get through today and then do it again tomorrow. That's why I think we romanticize resilience way too much. Sometimes resilience looks heroic. Sometimes it looks like feeding your dogs. Sometimes it's going to another medical appointment when you're sick of doctors. Sometimes it's opening your laptop and doing schoolwork while your body isn't cooperating. Sometimes it's calling your brother. Sometimes it's protecting your sobriety when nobody around you knows how badly it's being tested. Sometimes getting back up isn't one big moment. Sometimes you get back up an inch at a time, and this is the part I care about the most. Because I didn't start this podcast so people would listen to my story and feel sorry for me. It was quite the opposite. I can look back and see that those years didn't get the final say. I moved to Chicago looking for a fresh start. I protected my sobriety when it was tested harder than it's ever been. I started working towards a PhD. I became closer to my family. I learned exactly who belonged in my corner. I kept going when my body wasn't cooperating. And somewhere along the way, I stopped simply trying to survive my life and started building the life I actually wanted. That's what punching back means to me. It isn't revenge. It isn't pretending none of it hurt. It wasn't getting the last word. Punching back is building a life that what happened to you doesn't get to control it. It's laughing again, trusting again, taking chances again, and building something you're proud of. It's being able to sit behind a microphone and say, yeah, that happened to me. But that's not where my story ends. And maybe the ultimate punch is taking one of the hardest seasons of your life and creating something from it that might help somebody else get back up. That's what I want can't catch a break to be. Not a trauma podcast, not a pity party, not an hour of somebody listing everything that's wrong in their life. The punches get us into the story. The comeback is why we stay. And every week I'm going to sit across from somebody who's been hit hard by life. Some you'll know, some you won't. The punch might be addiction, illness, grief, divorce, failure, losing everything, starting over, or something completely different. We'll talk about what happened, but then we're moving forward. I want to know who showed up. I want to know what changed. I want to know what they discovered about themselves. I want to know what they built afterward. I want to know how they got off the canvas, and I want to know how they're punching back. Because everybody gets knocked down eventually. Can't catch a break is about what happens when you get back up, stronger than you were before. So that's where this show begins. With my story. Not because mine is worse than anybody else's, and definitely not because I want anybody to feel sorry for me. It's because before I ask somebody else to sit across from me and be honest about the hardest rounds of their life, I needed to be willing to do the same. Maybe you're listening right now and you're in one of those seasons where the punches just keep coming. I'm not going to tell you everything happens for a reason. I'm not going to tell you to just think positively. And I'm definitely not going to tell you it's easy. I'll tell you what I learned. Find your corner. Protect the things that matter. And if getting back up today means getting six inches off the canvas, get six inches up. Tomorrow, worry about the rest. There were days when I kept going because my dogs needed me. Eventually I started wanting to keep going for me too. And now I'm building something from it. This. My comeback didn't start when life finally gave me a break. My comeback started while I was still waiting for one. The punches are part of the story. The comeback is the story. I'm Reese Arthur. This is can't catch a break.
