S2 E2 - MPL MD1 Review

I'm flying solo in this episode, just a short one to review the opening round's action in Il-Kampjonat Premjer.

Some big names returning to Malta, big crowds, shock results and a red card. The first week had it all.

Welcome to uh series two, episode two of the Pastitian Penalties podcast. Uh this one is being um recorded on Tuesday, the 18th of August, so it's the day after um all of the match day one fixtures have finished uh in Il Campionat Premiere. Uh and what an opening weekend it's been. Um we've had some very interesting results. I, for one, um, am definitely one that's eating humble pie. Um, and I'm also one of those supporters that's been on the wrong end um of a beating this weekend. But um we're gonna go through those very shortly. I should just say this is just gonna be uh a short episode and slightly different to the usual format. Um, usually I'm joined uh by someone a bit more expert in Maltese football than myself. Um anyone who uh listened to last week's episode, um, episode one of series two uh will know that obviously I did that episode with Gianluca Lear from the Times of Malta. Uh Jan Luca is obviously a very regular guest um and very gratefully so from my point of view um on this podcast. However, I thought just because it's uh sort of um just a catch up on what's happened in the first weekend of the season, and it's only gonna be a short one, um, it's gonna be just me riding solo. So hopefully you don't find my voice too monotonous for too long. And if there is a silver lining for you guys, it's a short episode. So let's jump right into it. Um, and I was gonna do this um retrospectively um as the fixtures had been played. However, um I just figure that I need to start in with one particular match, and that is last night's match at Centenary Stadium, the later match that is, uh, and we had Homeroon Spartans Nil Mostar 2. Now, anyone who listened to last week's episode will know that both myself and Gianluca we're confident, shall we say, that Most will be fighting relegation. And then let's face it, it's the opening day of the season, only one match down. A lot can obviously change. But uh I think most people will have been very surprised by Most's 2-0 win yesterday, and it wasn't uh a fluke either. They played some really good football at times, Mostar, um, and scored a couple of superb goals as well. Um, they opened the scoring after just four minutes with Thiago Spindala, who they obviously signed from Slima Wanderers uh during the summer transfer window. Um, and it was another Brazilian uh who added the second, uh Giancarlo Gonçalves, uh late on on 76 minutes. Now, Hamrun, I don't know that we can read a huge amount into this one. Uh, anyone who's been following the Hamrun story so far uh this summer knows it's been a summer of turmoil at the club. Uh, obviously, Stefano Sandera, the Italian uh coach, uh stepped down due to health reasons. Um and Josep Potelli, we know has been heavily involved in buying his club in Serici in Italy. So whether he has his sights completely on Hamrune at the moment, I'm not saying he doesn't, but um, it's anyone's guess, right? So, you know, we we I don't think we can read a huge amount into Humrune at the moment. I think they will get better as the season goes on. As we say, it's only one match down. But what a great result for Moster. We can't take anything away from them. Uh, as I say, two superb goals, played some good stuff at times, and they're not even the finished article yet. Uh, anyone who follows Moster uh their social media account on Facebook will today have seen that they are indeed due to add to their squad. Uh, there is another signing on the way. As I have gone to record this episode, uh, we don't know who that's going to be just yet. Um, but I know that they are waiting on other African players uh with regards to visas and work permits and such. So I'm fully expecting that we could be seeing another player from Africa joining the club. Um as for Hamroon, um as I say, early days, um, long way to go yet. But it's a great start for Moster, and uh they deserve a lot of credit for that result. Um, but with that result now done, I'm just gonna go through the other results just briefly and add any points that I can where relevant. Um, so obviously the season opened on Friday at 6 o'clock at Centenary Stadium. Uh Birzabudja St. Peter's, one of the two promoted sides from the Challenge League this summer. Uh, they fell 3-0 to last season's title winners, Floriana. Uh, Floriana's goal through Paul Lombong on 31 minutes from the penalty spot. Also the Croatian striker Tomislav Godelia on 53, and Malta International fullback Miles Berman on the hour completing the scoring. Um, there was also a penalty miss for Floriana, so it could have been more. But uh it's a baptism of fire for Bearsabuja. They won't come up against too many better sides than Floriana now. Regardless of who we think might win the league this year, and we'll all have different opinions, I'm sure, but Floriana are almost certainly going to be there or thereabouts. So this was as tough as it gets for the newcomers. Um that said, you know, long way to go. A lot of football to be played, as we keep saying. I'll try not to repeat that too often. Um, but um it will be interesting to see how Beers of Budja now recover from that. They have Zabar St. Patrick this Saturday. That's a nine o'clock kickoff at Tony Betzina. So I think we'll see um a little more realism from them. Um, obviously, Zabbar were also beaten this weekend as well, which I'll come on to. But um, you would expect that Beersabudja will be more in the contest when they take on uh Gilbert Ajus' side. Um, game number two of the season, also on Friday at Centenary Stadium, was the 830 kickoff, and that was Balzan, another one of the newly promoted sides from the Challenge League this summer, in fact, the champions. Um, and they took on Marcer Schlock. Now, uh, again, anyone who tuned into last week's episode will know that um both myself and Gianluca fear a little bit for Marcer Schlock. Uh, they have not made too many signings this summer. Don't get me wrong, they had a good side last season anyway, but they have lost players, they haven't signed too many on top of that. Uh, and obviously they had the two uh pretty disastrous results against Punic from Armenia in the uh conference league this summer as well. But um I personally was present at this game. I was very interested to see how these two um would uh take each other on. Um I thought Marcel Schlock had the better of the first half. Um, they weren't Uber dominant, should we say, but uh they created the better chances, and certainly uh Manuel Diallu, the uh Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper at Balzan, he was definitely the busier of the two custodians in the first 45. Um Balzan really just uh limited to a couple of half chances, um, as you would expect. Um Dimegia Wassania, the Nigerian uh striker for Balzan, involved in both of those half chances. Um and in the second half, uh it was a very different game. Balzan made changes at uh a change, I should say, at half time. Um, Andrew Cohen replaced uh Isaac Davy, the uh young Australian who had been playing um somewhat in midfield um and replaced him with uh young Maltese midfielder uh Jake Potelli. Um now I'm a big fan of Jake Poteli. A lot of people may not be too familiar with him. Uh Balzan brought him in last summer after their relegation from the MPL. Um, he's a tireless midfielder, pint-sized player, um, very diminutive, and he covers every blade of grass over 90 minutes. He's he's got bundles of energy. Um, so when he came on at halftime, he gave Balzan that little bit of extra spark in the midfield that they'd been lacking in the first half. Um, and it was him that um scored the equalizer. Um, so Marcel Schlock had opened the scoring with Nikolai Muscat on 36. Uh Jack Potelli equalised on 73. Um, and that's how it stayed. And to be honest with you, over the 90 minutes, that's a deserved result. Um, I don't think too many people on either side could complain um about the draw. Um, it was interesting to see Barzan also not start Emmanuel Asante, uh, the Ghanaian midfielder who they've signed from Sui United in the Challenge League this summer. Uh Asante was um pretty regular goal scorer for Sui last season, and uh he also made a big difference when he came on. Uh excuse me, he came on on 55, and um he made a big difference driving forward from midfield while uh Jake Portelli was doing most of the legwork in the middle of the park. So those two combined really well, and they gave Marcer Schlock quite a few issues. Uh Marcer Schlock, perhaps lacking a little bit of fitness, um, they seemed to tire greatly as the game went on, and it was really made for for players like Dimedji Awasanya, who moved out more wide um of a wide role in the second half. Um, and you just get the feeling that if Balzan do stay up this season, um, that he will be a key part um of any success that they get. He does make a big difference to the side. He was fantastic for them in the Challenge League last year. He was also very good for them in the MPL the season. They got relegated as well. I was actually quite surprised they managed to keep hold of him. Um, I actually spoke to somebody at Balzan who said he had originally been looking to leave after relegation, but uh the club had him on contract, wanted to build a side around him, and uh that's exactly what they did, and to great effect as well. Um, he scored a lot of goals in the Challenge League last year, and I think he will um weigh in within you know of his fair share this season as well. Um, maybe more in the way of assists than actual outright goals, but either way, um he will be invaluable to them this season. Um perhaps a little lightweight defensively, Balzan, the way they set up at the start of the game. Uh, they played both the new Serbian centre backs in this game. They went with a back four, uh, Nikola Dorich and Nikolai Injatovic, who they signed from uh Galen United in Singapore. Um, and they looked a little bit vulnerable at times, I'll be honest. Um, I think lacking a little bit of cover from the centre of midfield as well. Um, but you know, they they have experience on the bench, they have the likes of Same Arab, they have Nicolas Pulis who can play centre half as well. So they have options, and I think um, you know, as the season goes on, they'll get into a more settled pattern. Uh, with regards to Marcer Schlock, um not too many performances to talk about. Um, I thought Lucas Caruana, the young Maltese midfielder, thought he looked very good in the middle of the park. He was replaced uh with about 10 minutes or so of normal time to go. Um, and I think it could be a big season for him. I think they may rely on him uh quite a bit in the middle of the park. Juan Corbalan as well at right back. Uh I thought he looked quite lively but sort of tired as the as the game went on. So lots of work for both sides to do. Um but uh it's gonna be an interesting season and interesting to see how both finish up and whether, of course, they uh their business is done in this summer window. Um there is of course plenty of time left for players to sign for clubs, so uh we'll see if anything changes there after one round. Uh moving forward, uh Balzan actually play Moster. Uh that's the nine o'clock kickoff on Sunday at Centenary Stadium. Um as regards Marisa Schlock, um, they play this Friday at nine o'clock at Centenary Stadium and they take on Hibernians. Um Hibernians I will come on to. Um I saw them up close on Sunday evening and was very impressed, so we'll come on to that one in due course. Uh, but game three of Mesh Day One was Valletta, and they beat Zabar St. Patrick 4-2 at Tony Betzina Stadium in Paola. Now they were made to work for this one. Uh wasn't uh perhaps all one-way traffic as the result might suggest. Um, they were 1-0 down early on. Uh Nicolas Lanciani on 17 minutes for Zabar St. Patrick. They equalized via Andrea Zamit on 33, and then Mario Fontanella, of course, ex-Valletta player, um, scored from the spot five minutes before half time, and that's how it stayed at the break, 2-1 to Zabar. However, uh second half, Valletta found a second gear. Uh, there was an own goal by Strahinya Jovancic on 62. Uh, Andrea Zamit scored his brace from the penalty spot on 79, and then uh Diugo Tavares um grabbed the fourth on 82 minutes to see all the points for Valletta. So a recovery after their um conference league exit um where they were quite comprehensively beaten over the two legs. Um, but uh Valletta they obviously you would expect them to be um challenging towards the top of the table. Um time will tell how that pans out, but Andreas Amit, great to see him start in games and also getting uh a brace, both from a penalty spot. Um, but it's great to see the younger Maltese players getting a chance to shine. Uh Zabor, well, you know, we are kind of expecting that they might struggle a little this season. They have made uh a couple of good signings. Um, one is Charles Momwa, the Tanzanian International, who has joined them from Floriana. Um, anyone who followed that news knows that Floriana were not too keen to lose him. I expect him to be a key player for Zabaya this season. Um, and Mario Fontanella among the goals as well. Um, he's like a fine wine, ages well. So we'll see how that pans out. But um, long way to go. Um now after the Valletta game, um, the 830 kickoff was Slim and Wanderers against Hibernians. Now, just before I delve into this game, I feel the need just to have a little bit of a win cheer. Um, now, as a supporter who was at the game, um I feel that the MPL scheduled this incorrectly. So we had, as I say, Valletta versus Zabar at Tony Bettsina at six o'clock. Now, obviously, games tend to kick off a few minutes late. Uh, we have obviously all the new rules around extra time uh injury time, I should say, uh being played, which means games are going on for longer. Um, couple that with the delays for the kickoff and the second half kickoff, and all of a sudden, you know, you're eating into game time or preparation time for the game that occurs immediately after. Now, when I turned up, I got to Tony Betzina around probably about five to eight. Um, needless to say, parking was very tricky as it very usually is around that area. You've obviously, for those who don't know, you've got the big industrial estate, the Corradino, and um it was very busy because everybody knows Valletta, they travel in numbers whenever they're playing. But to have a game immediately after that where you've got Hibernians who are on home turf, they travel quite well anyway, they have a big support base, but especially at their own stadium, you're expecting them to turn out in numbers. Also, it was probably the largest Salima Wanderers turnout that I've seen fans-wise since we won the Challenge League uh three years ago. So it's you know, it's it was a recipe for disaster. Parking was at a premium, the roads were blocked where cars just couldn't get both ways down the roads. Um, and you know, actually arriving on foot to the stadium once I'd found parking, the Salerma wander's entrance. I'm seeing people in Valletta shirts and everything standing outside the turnstiles with Salima fans. So I'm thinking, well, the Valletta fans, they can't be surely going into the ground. But they were. There were quite a few Valletta fans who were um obviously purchasing tickets and going to the second game as well, the Slima again, it's Tiburnian's game. Now, where am I going with this? Well, we couldn't get into the stadium until about 10 past eight. That was when the turnstile actually opened after they managed to empty Tony Betsina of the Valletta fans who were in the same end as Slima. So immediately there's a rush to get into the stadium. We don't want to miss the kickoff. The kickoff was ultimately delayed slightly anyway. Um, but it's just poor planning, as far as I can see. I think you need a clear hour between the end of the first game and or the estimated end of the first game and the beginning of the second game, because you need to get the stadium clear, you need to get the area clear, and you need to allow the fans coming in for the second games, regardless of who it is, you need to allow them the opportunity to be able to park, to be able to get to the stadium on time, to be able to, you know, get through the turnstiles and have a little time before kickoff to use the concession stands to find a seat, you know, to socialize, whatever they need to do. And it's also for the players as well. They need to be able to get onto the pitch, they need to be able to warm up correctly. I just feel that um the MPL does not give enough time between games, and especially where you have two games of this magnitude with such large attendance figures. Anyway, I don't want to go on about it too long, so I'm gonna go on to the game itself. Now, as uh one of the slim ears in myself, I had high hopes for this game. I thought, you know, with our um summer signings um that you know this was gonna be the dream team. And don't get me wrong, one game. So it could turn out to be, but it didn't go according to plan. As anyone who um saw my updates or saw this game um well has seen highlights, whatever, will know. Uh so Slim Wanderers, it started, it looked as though it was going to start very well. Um, Teddy Talmer um played in Anthony Limbombe down the left. Beautiful interplay between the two. Limbombe was challenged in the box and went down. This was in the second minute, so it was that soon. Um penalty was then delayed. The referee um needed to check Var. Um so there was a slight delay of about maybe two or three minutes. By the time Teddy Tama took the penalty, um, he skied it over the bar. Not what we expected, but these things happen to the best of players, right? Um, and then after that, um, Hibernians came into the game a bit more. Um, Joseph Mbong shows no signs of aging. Whenever they were able to get him on the ball, he looked to cause problems for the Slimmer back four, um, who looked quite vulnerable, I will say. I thought uh the back four really did struggle at times. Um out of the four, there was uh Jean Borge at left back, who I really rate. He's one of my favorite players at Slima. Um, and in the middle there was the Spaniard Diego Kamarakalea. Um, there was also uh the I think he's Serbian, Vladko Drobarov, and then um at right back there was uh Adam Magri Overend, um, who I'm another one, another one that I'm a big fan of, Magri Overend. Um, but he did struggle a little bit to contain, especially the German uh left back for Hibernians Moritz Rumling, who managed to get by him a couple of times. Um, but the back four seemed to struggle a little bit, Joseph and Bong tested them, and also um the Brazilian striker um Matush, who I thought was outstanding when they managed to get him on the ball, looks a very capable operator. Obviously, he's played Serie A, so he knows his way around the game. I thought Bjorn Christensen was ageless in the middle of the park for hips. Um and the wide players, they had Boris Druger, who opened the scoring for them on 29 minutes. They also had uh in the second half Fabian Yankovich who scored a beautiful volley on 74. It's a crossover from the right. He was unmarked at the back stick um on the edge of the box and volleyed home. And they also had two goals ruled off for offside Hibernians as well, so it could have been far worse. Um, I thought Slima. Look, this is a new team. There are very you know few players from last season that started this game. In fact, out of the 11 that started, uh, I believe it's only John Borge, uh Adam Agri over, and then Stephen Pizzani who were at the club last season. So that shows a high turnover at the club. Um but I think questions will be asked of the defense. I thought the midfield looked a little bit out of whack. Um, it started um as a three, so you had Teddy Talmer, Stephen Pizzani, um, and also um I'm trying to think who was uh Matteo Lorenzi, the uh young Portuguese player who's come in from Ference. Um Lorenzi was actually uh replaced at half time. Um he was replaced by Alex Sateriano, and Slimer looked a different side with Soteriano playing. I mean, again, as I said earlier about Jake Portelli being everywhere, Soteriano was the same driving forward from midfield. You know, we all know what what his quality is, um, and he will be invaluable for Slima this season, I think, and I'm sure he will be starting more games. I think he'd actually come off of a knock uh from the Jamari tournament in preseason, so that's probably why he didn't start. But uh he made a big difference. There was a lot more dynamism with him uh once he came on at the break. Mohammed Awad as well, the Somalian um international, he looked lively when he came on as well. Um, and I think he's another one that you know will probably be starting more games. But when I look at that centre back pairing, first competitive game together, I know, but I just I look at Gustavo Alsinu, who's been with the club for two or three seasons now, um, on the bench, and I I do think that you know um I didn't see anything that made me think that they were better than Alsinu. Uh Alsenu's always been very reliable for us. Um Nigel Roberta came on as well, the um the Dutch striker. Um, and we also got to see new Nigerian signing uh Musa Ali um who came on as a sub um at the break. Again, looked lively, um but yeah, you know, he he's only just signed for the club, so it's early days. Um hibernians, worthy winners in the end, no complaints. Um, and I think uh I'm gonna try and pronounce his name, the coach Tugberk Tan Tanrivermis, the Turkish coach. Um he he's got them really well drilled. If they can maintain that level of performance um throughout the season, then they're gonna be surprising a few people, I think. And it was a great crowd as well, really was great atmosphere from both ends, and exactly what you want to see at MPL games. Um, so then we move on to Monday, of course. Um, now we've already done Humrun Mosta, but Birkikara Xera. Um now I think a few of us feared for Xera going into this season. Again, they've lost a few players, uh, they've signed a few players, but they have tended to uh go for younger players, and even some of the imports that have come in, I've been a little surprised about. Um they brought in one particular player as an example, and I'm not meaning to pick on him, but he was a player that I looked into. Uh Denish Diadio, uh, another Guinea Bissau uh player. He's a striker, but he's been playing at the fourth tier in Portugal, and he's not been too prolific there either. So it's a it's an odd signing for me. When you have these kind of guys coming in, when you have the foreign players coming in, they've got to be better than the Maltese, the local Maltese players, in my opinion. And I think a lot of fans would echo that. Now, again, I'm not saying Diadju is not going to be a good signing. He may well turn out to be fantastic. He came on as a sub uh just after an hour, and by that point, Xero were already pretty much done for anyway. So the goals were scored uh by Amarildu on 10 minutes to Brazilian. Uh Nigerian striker Franklin Cesare got a brace on 16 and 51. The second was from the penalty spot. He did also have a really good goal disallowed uh for offside, which was a real shame. Um, it was a great solo effort. Um, and then uh signing from the Sharra Lions in the summer, Louis Pahama. Um, he rounded everything off on 84. Uh, so a 4-0 win for Birkakara. Big questions to be asked for Gzira. Um, I think Birkakara will have a good season this year. They've made some great signings. Rashad Altoumi from Slima Wanderers, Malta International goalkeeper, Zach Muscat, who a very well publicised um signing who's come from Chavez in uh Liga Deutsch, the second tier of Portuguese football, and whom obviously we know much about being a Malta international and having played in various countries. Uh Jake Fasalo, who was has was superb in his time at Mostar, still young, but the centre half played uh the full game yesterday, played well. And yeah, you just you look at Birkakara and you think they've done some tidy business there. Obviously, coached by a very good coach, Paul Zamit, who I still think should be in charge at Slima. I still don't agree with uh his dismissal last season, but that's by the by. Uh Slima's lost his Bekakara's game, and um I think they'll have a good season this season. Uh Xero, on the other hand, if you look at their lineup, lots of young players there. Carl Sargent, of course, in goal. Uh Deca Nabella, Andrew Boric, Brooklyn Borge. You know, these are young players, um, and it's gonna take them time um to get up to get up to standard. Um they are supplemented, of course, by some more experienced players. They obviously still have uh Gabriel Mentz, the Brazilian, although he plays for Malta. Uh he didn't have the best of games, um, and saw saw red for two yellows. So that's something that has to change. Obviously, there was obviously uh Samurai Maswell Meyer up front, who's an experienced player. Um, Mark van der Bolvenkamp, um, the center half played alongside Ments. He's a player I rate. Um, seen him play quite a lot in his time at Milita when they were an MPL side. Um, but yeah, I mean Gazira were just second best, simple as that. And um, I don't think they can really have any complaints. Lots of food for thought for Darren Abdillah. Um, and going into their second game, um, it doesn't get any easier for them. Uh, they take on Valletta, and in fact, that's a nice segue to move into the games that are coming up this weekend. So uh Friday, the 21st of August, uh at 6:30 Centenary Stadium, we've got the Maltis old firm. So we've got Floriana against Slima Wanderers. Now it's going to be a very interesting turn of events. Slima cannot really afford to lose a second straight game, in my opinion. I think questions will be asked if that is the case, with the money that's been invested and the short uh patience span for boards and fans alike these days, especially when so much money's been pumped into a side. I just think Slima have to get something from this game, even if it's only a point. Floriana, as we know, defending champions, very um convincing against Beersabudja, and you would expect them it's gonna be a really tough game this one, and hopefully a good crowd at Centenary as well. Friday, the 21st of August. So again, uh, but the nine o'clock kickoff, Marcer Schlock against Hibernians. Now, Marcer Schlock are certainly gonna have to improve their uh showing from game one. Hibernians, well, they'll be full of confidence after their 2-0 win over Slima on Sunday, and you um on what I've seen, I'm expecting Hibernians to win this one. Um, moving into Saturday, the 6 30 kickoff at Tony Betina Stadium. Uh Birkakara take on Hamroon. Going to be a very interesting game. Bekakara, as we've just said, have had a very good opening uh game of the season. Hamrun, pretty much like Salima, they'll be looking to try and get something from this game. Um, a second straight loss to open the season would be pretty disastrous, I think. Um Marco Amelia, he's got his job, he's got his work cut out for him. Uh, the nine o'clock kickoff on the Saturday at Tony Betzina, Zabar St. Patrick against Biazaburja St. Peters, as we've mentioned, both teams coming off of a loss on the opening day, and um, I think both teams will be similar levels of talent, so I think that one's going to be a very close game. Um, and it will be interesting to see which way that falls. Um moving into Sunday, uh, 23rd of August, 6:30 kickoff at Centenary Stadium at Ta'ali. Xera United take on Valletta. Um, as I say, Xera will be licking their wounds after last night's defeat, but uh I have to say I'm expecting Valletta to carry that one and reasonably comfortable as well. Um, and then the nine o'clock kickoff on Sunday is Most against Balzan, also at Centenary Stadium. With that one, well, who will win that one? Anyone's guess. Uh, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends in a draw. I think both sides have shown on match day one that they they can dig in. Um, and Moster played some great stuff, so but they won't find Balzan an easy side uh to beat. So some interesting matchups there, and um you know we we won't go through the league table at this stage because you know there's only one game gone, so there's not really too much to talk about in that respect. I think we need probably another two rounds of fixtures before we can start to see uh the league table opening up slightly. Um, but that's um this episode. I hope uh that you've enjoyed this one. It's slightly different. Uh, we've never really done um reviews of of match day rounds in Il Campiona Premiere before, so it's something a bit new uh to the channel, but um depending on how popular this one is and the feedback that we get from it, uh we may make it a weekly thing. Um, and I'll get other people involved as well if they're be you know interested to come on and and talk about the the previous rounds games. So we'll see how that one goes. But um just a slightly uh brief update from our end as well, and that is that uh we are in the process of opening up the YouTube channel as well. Um that I'm hoping will go live in the next week or so. Um, the podcast episodes will be available to listen to on YouTube for those of you who prefer that. Um and there might be the odd little video here and there as well. Um, I have got something planned for November, but um there is a little bit of planning that has to go into that first.
