Hi everyone! Hello, hello! Welcome to Salty and Spooky. I'm Sarah, and I'm Carrie, and wear your weekly coastal New England haunts and travel podcast. Each week we'll share spooky stories from New England's coast and rich maritime heritage paired with our favorite travel recommendations or spooky good wrecks. Think Spooky Meets Coastal Grandma Cozy from two native New Englanders. We plan to expand into other areas that capture New England's haunted lore, like books, movies, and listener stories. For today, we thought we'd share a little more about ourselves, how this podcast came to be, and our shared love of New England, spooky things, and anything cozy and coastal. Start at the very beginning? All those many years ago. It was a couple years ago. Back in 1877. It might as well be at this point. That's okay. Do we dare say what year it was or not? No pressure. No, we can. The year of our Lord, 2008. Yes. It was June. In a lovely little town known as Durham, New Hampshire. Which I feel like the town is pretty much entirely the University of New Hampshire, where we met at orientation. Go Wildcats. We bleed blue. I think we were both planning on more artsy type majors. So we ended up being put in the same group to choose classes. Oh yes. I was very lost just in general in orientation. And I remember walking up the stairs to the library. I think I asked you a question, and you also did not know anything that was going on. So I was like, this is my girl to stick one. Yes. Let's be lost together. And I mean, has anything changed? Well, we got lost around Boston. Like last month. We did went around the garden. Wait, is it the gardens or the commons? The commons? See, I don't know. No. Same general vicinity. Nothing's changed. No, no. But I just remember going into that little classroom, and I remember the head of the ballet department, Larry. His last name is escaping my mind right now. But he was in charge of us, and you were already there, and I just sat next to you, and the rest is history. The rest is her story. Heck yeah. I think you also sent me. I mean, this is way back in the day, but you sent me like a Facebook DM. It was very sweet. I think it was like day two or three, and I was like, oh damn, I'm gonna need a friend. And then I called you. And we went to the gym. I remember. Oh, really? That was like the first time we met up. That was like a gym. So do you remember the gym's name? Because I don't. It's a quiz. Ooh. I know it was in the Wit Center, but like what the name of the gym is. It's probably the Wit, right? Doesn't that sound right? Correct us if we're wrong. That sounds good. Those were the days. That's where it all started. It really is. And here we are now talking about salty and spooky stuff. A hundred years later. Speaking of salty and spooky and how this podcast came about, our friendship over these years, these decades, if I may say. Yes. Um, I think our shared love of Halloween Definitely. That's been a constant as strange as it is. Winter in the spring and summer, let alone the fall, is the love of the spooks. Perhaps we should take it a step back here because we met in Durham at UNH and we're both native New Englanders, but I am a native Massachusetts person and I live on the South Shore of Massachusetts. I somehow made my way back up to the New Hampshire Sea coast thing from inland New Hampshire. Now on the coast, a coastal girl as well. And I feel like even though I mean not that we're that far away from each other, but it's always been a point to around the fall, specifically like Halloween season, get together and do something spooky. It's like our our friendship Christmas. Most years we end up like getting each other something to do. That's weird to say is it's our Christmas. Yeah, forget Christmas gifts. We do Halloween gifts. Oh my gosh. I think my favorite thing you've ever gotten me for a Halloween gift is a scope all pumpkin. I mean, the gold skull candle that you got me, that that sits on my bookshelf all year round.

Just the dark academia of it all. I think I put it out as a Halloween decoration, but then was like, no, this just fits. This is all year round. Oh, definitely. Well, that's what yeah. We spent our first Halloween together at UNH in 2008. We had matching costumes. Well, opposite matching costumes. Yes. Dark angel, light angel. I feel like ever since there's been a quite a few Halloweens though together. There really have been. And lots of interesting horror movie choices. So many American psycho rewatches. Probably too many. I feel like it's at least half a dozen we've seen together. And I have to admit that I still don't know what the ending means of that movie, no matter how many times we watch it together. Oh, I think it's very much up for interpretation. That's what I'm gonna go with. I like to pretend we're not supposed to really get it. It is quite the philosophical film though, but highly recognized. I think it's Christian Bale's finest work. He kills it in that movie. Oh my god. Man can wield a chainsaw. That's all I'm gonna say. And a cucumber face mask. If you know, you know. And those apps in that movie. I was gonna I was thinking like all the stomach crunches and then the face mask. And it's a it's the perfect film. It really is. I think our shared love of Halloween, also our shared love of New England, I'm pretty much accepting of the fact that I am trying and I think succeeding at making New England my entire personality. Spooky New England. I think I've accepted my early coastal grandma. That's who I am and who I strive to be. Yeah. Killing it. Much like Christian Bale. I think it's also fitting that our first official or unofficial meeting about the idea of this podcast, about a scary podcast, was done at the Barbie Cafe pop-up in Boston in an all-pink Barbie doll fever dream. And we were talking about thrasher movies and ghosts and pirates and all the things that we could talk about for this podcast while surrounded by pink disco balls and Malibu Barbie, paraphernalia, left and right. It's all gold or pink, but you know, I don't think either one of us is a particularly gruesome person. So I definitely like to like to combine forces with the lighter, more fun kind of things too. Half thrasher, half LL bean at the end of the day. Absolutely. All these years we've known each other, we have half jokingly come up with so many different ideas of ventures to get into. And I kind of feel like I at least I wanted to really come up with something creative that would work. So stay tuned.
