prayer life that we studied in that course, and it filled me with such hope and joy that I don't know that I could possibly talk about anything else tonight, given the chance to open God's word prayer has been answered in this very room tonight. 00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:22.000 And earlier today, while I was sitting at home, I was praying that that prayer of Jesus would be answered again tonight, maybe for someone for the first time, that you would believe in Jesus for the first time. 00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:27.439 The first request that Jesus makes for us is that we may be one. seventeen of John, you'll see that Jesus speaks about unity explicitly, about nine times, washing each other's feet, loving one another as a commandment, and also saying that by your love for one another, the world's gonna know that you're my disciples. 00:07:18.639 --> 00:07:25.279 But here in verses 20 to 23, Jesus is speaking explicitly and only about unity. 00:07:25.680 --> 00:07:35.120 The triune Godhead is the very source of this unity that Jesus is praying for. 00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:24.079 Because the eternal triune God is unity in his essence. 00:08:24.319 --> 00:08:30.879 The Father loves the Son, the Son loves the Father, the Spirit proceeds from the love of the Father and the Son. 00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:33.759 Theologians call this paracurasis. 00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:38.399 It's the Father, the Son, and the Spirit being bound together in perfect unity. 00:08:38.639 --> 00:08:49.759 It's love and life flowing unbroken between the three of them, without any mixture, without any confusion, perfect unity and perfect love, one essence and three persons. 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:56.399 And this is the very triunity that Jesus prays that our unity would be as. sons or daughters by adoption, versus a son by nature is an important distinction to keep in our minds. 00:09:50.720 --> 00:09:53.279 Nevertheless, what is the means of this unity? 00:09:53.360 --> 00:11:35.440 Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. 00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:40.559 For whatever the Father but Christ who lives in me. 00:12:17.840 --> 00:12:24.559 And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 00:12:24.799 --> 00:12:31.200 When you are united to Christ by the Spirit, it means that you have one life with him. 00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:36.399 Colossians says that your life is hidden with Christ in God. 00:12:37.679 --> 00:12:46.320 John chapter 6, verse 57, if you turn over just a little bit, John chapter 6, verse 57, Jesus says this statement. 00:13:00.159 --> 00:13:11.200 By faith you are not only united to the Godhead, but faith is also here illustrated as feeding, consuming, taking in, partaking in, embracing who he is. 00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:15.279 And in that way you are united relationally to him as to His own glory and excellence, by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:19.840 Objective truth, objective truth, objective truth. 00:14:20.000 --> 00:14:20.399 Right? 00:14:20.639 --> 00:14:42.320 Now he says, verse 5, for this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:56.879 While our unity to God is an objective fact, and by our unity we become partakers of the divine nature, there is still a subjective means in which we live out this objective fact. 00:14:57.840 --> 00:15:04.159 Note, Jesus in John 17, going back over again to the coming death of Christ and to his resurrection and his glorification, his ascension. 00:35:37.280 --> 00:35:48.159 And so what Jesus is saying at the beginning of this prayer is,
