All right, everyone, the final day of August 2026. You know what that means? U.S. Open in full swing. Yes, I was there until the evening, or I should say the morning ended with two legends going out. Novak Djokovic losing in five sets. Then Venus Williams, not so surprising that she went out. She went out in straight sets. Match ended after 2 a.m. Yours truly was there. Got home, had to have my little one tequila just to settle the nerves. Got to bed a little after 4 a.m. But here we are in the morning, ready for our second live edition of MacDaddy. Yeah, first off, Pat, great to be with you and Big Daddy and Lauren, one of my favorite guys running the show. So great to be with all of us as we're a team. I love that. I'm a team guy, right? Uh yesterday and Scotty Scheffler solidified himself as the most dominant golfer in the world by a wide margin. There's never been a bigger gap between world number one, Scotty Scheffler, and world number two, Rory, than we have now. Not even when Tiger Woods was in his heyday. So it's a remarkable performance by Scotty Scheffler, 66, 66 on the weekend. And guys, when you add it all up this year, and I never thought in all my years of covering professional golf, I'd see it. But if you add up his bonuses, what he won on the golf course, Scotty Scheffler cashed in this year alone, $63.9 million. Now Patrick's nodding, going, Yeah, I can relate to that, but I can't.

Amazing stuff, guys. What I say to that, Doug, is what I say when there's a great shot on the tennis court. Hello. Okay, that's my first hello on Mac Daddy ever. And that's because of you. Well, let me ask you this because I was following the golf a little bit yesterday while I was out at the open covering the tennis, and I saw that Scotty was actually three shots back, right? Victor Hoblin had the lead going into the final round. What clicked? I mean, you said he had the 66 the day before. What happened yesterday to make Sheffield be able to win it? And he actually ended up winning comfortably.

Yeah, he did, guys. Uh 66, five birdies, one bogey. You know, it was a round where the golf course finally got tough. They had a lot of rain in Atlanta. It was soft and relatively scorable the first three days. Yesterday it's where uh the teeth came out. And I think we saw that like Victor Hoblin shot over par and simply couldn't find a fair way. And from the rough at East Lake, uh, you couldn't score from there. So, you know what Scotty does so well, uh, he starts slowly and then gradually builds momentum as the week goes on as he builds confidence. And I think that's that's what the great ones do, guys. No matter what sport, golf or tennis or even team sports. Uh once you start building the big Mo, it's hard to get rid of it when you're so talented. And that's what we saw. Uh, and listen, he's not the most flamboyant guy. Uh, you know, he doesn't make headlines, he doesn't give you great quotes, he just says, Hey, I'm the best, come get me. And right now, nobody is even close in the world of professional golf.

Doug Bell joining us here on the Mac Daddy show. Big Daddy, got to get your thoughts on this because speaking of greatest of all time, right? We I was there last night for Novak Djokovic. Um, he has been the greatest of all time. And talking about a guy that did it sort of the no-frills way, at least early in his career, but you see him here and still gracious in defeat, even though he was vomiting Big Daddy on the court. He looked completely out of it sort of midway through the third set when he actually had a lead. Uh, the trainer came out to see him. He said this is something Big Daddy he's been dealing with for the entire summer. Similar thing happened to him in Cincinnati, one of the big tune-up tournaments. My question to you is because you've been around sports, you've been around some of the all-time greats in football. Your buddy Michael Strahan had sort of this decision to make too. Tom Brady, we know about him playing into his 40s. But what what's the when when it's time to go, when do you know?

I think it's one of those things that you feel it. Like, you know, it you always gonna have people that are gonna doubt you, right? They're gonna say, oh, that should be it, or you know, he don't look the same. Can't he bounce back? But I think it's an internal thing where the clock goes off and it finally says, you know what? You've been there, you've done that, walk out with your head up high. That's the feeling that I that's what I would do. You know, that's what I would say, you know what? I can't do this the way I used to. I'm still a legend, I've won everything, I've been on top, and it's okay. People are not gonna forget me because look what I'm doing at 39 years old. I'm still playing. And, you know, God forbid that hey, look, everyone has a you know an opinion, but at the end of the day, the four of us here know that that guy is a champion and will always be a winner.

Yeah, well, well, 24 majors to his name. Um, watching him go through what he went through last night, Doug, was tough. I mean, we know you know, golf is a little bit different, right? Because you can still play golf at a high level. You've seen Jack Nicholas, even Tiger when he won that final masters. You know, they can kind of find that that magic and do it. You know, it's a skill sport. Tennis is a skill sport as well, but it's also a much more physical sport. I would say golf more mental, um, you know, very difficult. But tennis, because of the physicality of it, to me, it's been amazing, Doug, watching Djokovic even do what he's done this year, beat Sinner in Australia, get to the semifinals at the uh at the Wimbledon at Wimbledon. Um, but this was tough to watch. And uh because he's been known for being the rock, right? Being the Iron Man. And I the the the the interesting thing, it wasn't like an injury per se, but it's just like it's almost like his body saying, enough, I can't take it anymore.

Yeah, Pat, it was a lot of melancholy I felt last night. You know, I was on the plane flying to Boston, and then when I got off the plane, the match is still going on. That that's tennis the five setter, uh, but it was a lot of melancholy I was feeling. And I have to admit I got a little emotional at the end, if this is indeed the end for arguably the greatest of all time. He has more grand slams than anybody. Uh, but I think Big Daddy said it best uh at some point the great ones hit the wall, and you have to make that very difficult decision. Is it time to put everything behind me and move on with just being a normal person? And that's the key, right? It's hard to be a normal person after you've been on the top of your profession for so, so long. I think the fire still burns, but Pat, you're right. Uh, whatever's going on physically, he used to be the best. He'd go to five sets. It was like, you know, he's gonna come back and win because he's just in better shape. No longer the case. So we'll see what happens. Uh I I think the world of the guy, I'm a golf guy, but I love tennis, and I think the world of him, and if this is indeed the last time we see him, that's awesome because he is the best.

Yeah. Well, it it one thing that he taught all of us is about recovery, and no one really thought about that as much. But Patrick, you you had you called the Venus match as well, so it's kind of an easy segue to the Venus match where I again you have to be the tennis diplomat, but I can sit here and say, She looks washed. And and so it's tough because it brings up, you know, all of us are huge sports fans, not just one sport. So it makes you think about, you know, we know all know Father Time's undefeated, but you think about the way Jordan looked when he wanted to get it, you know, tried to keep going. Big Daddy, I wanted to ask you about Emmett. You know, Emmett, when he played for the Cardinals, didn't look the same. You know, he had all these boxers. So it's a question of, you know, when is the right time to hang it up? Because in in Novak's case, I think it's melancholy, as Doug pointed out. And in Venus's case, it's hey, I think you should hang them up, and you you're you're you're you're hanging, you're embarrassing your legacy. So that's a bit of a challenge. So I didn't mean to step on you, Patrick, but I know you can't say what I just said.

Well, you know, the thing that you know, you want to the thing that reminded me of last night's match, it also reminded me of one of our former guests, Bernard Hopkins. Remember his last fight, he fought Joe Smith, who Bernard was trying to uh win, uh break the record to win a fight at the age of 50. And but and Joe Smith was 25 years old. I mean, and you know, Bernard got knocked out, but it looked like during that fight, and I was sitting there at ringside when that fight went off in LA. I was like, man, the longer Bernard keeps going, he's gonna take this guy. Because the young kid wasn't used to going past four or five rounds, and Bernard was always such a conditioned both mentally and physically that if he kept going, he was gonna win this fight. But you know, unfortunately, he got knocked out, and then you know, then he realized, hey, it's time to move on. You know, guys don't box at 48, 49, 50 years old.

Well, he did break his own record twice for the oldest, yeah, but the oldest all the time.

Yeah. You know, the interesting thing to me, Lauren, and and uh, you know, I can say that about Venus because um, and and maybe not the same way you said it, but you know, I did the match last night, I called the match, and it it and she was she was competitive in the match against Sophia Kennan, who by the way is also coming in, and she's a younger player, she's only 27, coming in on a on a losing streak. I mean, Venus hadn't won a match all year. She hasn't won a singles match on the tour. Uh, you got to go back over a year ago. So the last night made 15 in a row. She actually came back in the second set, had set points to take it to a third set. Otherwise, I'd still be there. I would have just slept on the couch there for a couple hours. Uh, but uh, you know, she she dropped that in the tie break, actually, she lost five points, no, six points in a row, because she was up 6'2 in the tie break. So I was thinking, along with Caroline Rosniaki, this one's going the distance. But here's the thing about Venus. Okay, unlike in team sports, you know this, big dad, you guys all know this. Sometimes a decision is made for you, right? The team's not going to re-sign you. I mean, even the great Joe Montana, right? You know, went to another team, left the 49ers. I mean, even the Patriots didn't want Tom Brady. Of course, he goes to Tampa Bay and wins another Super Bowl. So oftentimes that decision is made for you as an all-timer in the team sport. Doug and golf, I would say it's similar because you know, we have what's called the wild card in tennis. You have the exemptions in golf. So you can get in the masters, you know, until forever, basically, right? If you won the masters. Similar in tennis, but it's it's it's not official, though. So the tournament has to decide do we want to give give Venus Williams a wild card? And that's what a lot of the controversies come in the last few months in the tennis world, because the insiders in tennis are saying sort of what Lauren said like, why is Venus doing this? She's an all-time great, she's won seven majors. This is nothing like the Djokovic thing. Djokovic is you know still playing at the highest level of the game this this year. Uh, Venus, with all um, you know, honesty, is not. She's she's she's not competitive in a lot of these matches against basically journey women type players. So so then it's up to the tournament individually to let's just say no. I mean, take a golfer, Doug, let's say, and they said uh, you know, who's won seven majors, an all-time great, who's you know, 55, 60 years old, because that would be similar to that Venus is 46 in tennis, right? And says, hey, you know, I've never made the cut in five years, but I'd like to play in the U.S. Open Golf Championships. Let's just use that as an example. Would the US would the US GA give that person an exemption to play? What do you think?

Uh, no, because there's the U.S. Senior Open, which they do. You know, the Masters, Pat, you mentioned it. Uh, they allow guys to keep playing past champions as long as they're competitive. And once they reach that window, we saw Bernard Langer uh hung it up after last year. And and through the years, there's always that guy who decides, you know what, it it's it's time to go. And you're talking about individual sports, tennis, golf, boxing. Big daddy mentioned boxing. Uh, I still remember Muhammad Ali. One more fight, Trevor Burbick in the Bahamas. How sad was that as Burbick beats the great Muhammad Ali? Obviously, Muhammad needed money at the time, and there were a lot of factors, but uh, this is what we're all saying. It's it's so hard for the when you're at the top to say it's over. And I, you know, your brother did it, Pat. You know, he knew it was time, even though he's still, I mean, at his age, he's still hitting the tennis ball pretty good, but he's no longer playing at events. So it just it's a hard decision. And uh, and they're the best of the best, and it's hard to say it is time.

You know, it's it you it reminded me, Big Daddy, when you were talking about you have to feel it, right? Like the individual has to feel it. And Roger Federer, because the last time we did our show was it was the morning of the induction speech. So I haven't talked to you guys since then. I know you saw clips of it, but you know, Federer said something, said a lot of things really interesting in his speech. But one of them, and one of the things he said to me in the course of the multiple interviews I did with him over the couple of days up there, was that he doesn't regret not being on the tour at all. He says, in fact, he's happy, he's at peace with it because he, you know, people don't realize the wear and tear, the difficulty. He called it in his speech the volcano of pressure that it is to be a top-level uh uh tennis player and to put the body through what he put himself through. So clearly he knows what Novak Djokovic is going through right now, what Venus Williams has been going through. And I think people in the tennis world, Big Daddy, you know, when there's certain things you say to the people close to you, there's certain things you don't necessarily want to say publicly, but I think a lot of inside tennis people sort of wish that Venus would say her, would come to that realization herself because nobody else really wants to tell her, Big Daddy.

Uh yeah, it's hard because you know, she has been on top, and you still gotta respect her and give her kudos, but not everybody feels comfortable in telling someone at that level, hang it up, kid, it's over. And I hate to put it that way, but that's the way it really should be put. Because when you decline, your play declines. Remember, the the whole tennis world doesn't want to have a negative uh output or have people talk negative about it because she's not playing where she should be. So, yeah, it's a realization that she needs to come to, and someone really needs to come step up and say, This is it.

Yep. Yeah, no, good point. And Doug, you know, you mentioned the senior golf tour, which is kind of interesting because in tennis, we don't really have that. I mean, we have some of the exhibitions, which my brother's been able to do. He did the one with Fed, and that to me was so awesome to see, you know, not only at the U.S. Open last week to see him play with Agassiz and Roddick and uh and Roger Federer, but there I am, Doug, sitting in the umpire's chair in Newport, Rhode Island, at the on the grounds of the Tennis Hall of Fame, on the center court, the storied grass courts, the museum right there, 4,000 plus people, which has never happened at the Hall of Fame for an exhibition match. And who's on the same side of the net playing doubles together? Roger Feder and Martina Navertilova. Hello? I mean, what is better than that to see the two of them? You you get to get that in golf, you know, sort of in competitions. We don't really get to see that as much in tennis, but that's certainly a nice part of being a professional golfer that you can sort of ease in. Still play competitively, not the same as being on the regular tour, but it's a kind of easier way to ease into your sunset years, isn't it?

Oh, absolutely. And these guys over 50, uh, they play up until they're 65. So in Bernard Langer's case, he's close to 70 years old. So yeah, golf has a nice uh uh uh retirement plan, if you will, for these guys.

A nice landing, a nice landing pattern. You can just ease into it. Yeah, tennis is, as we're seeing, a little rocky, a little bumpy uh coming in for the landing.

It is. Um, I will say this though, and uh kudos to you uh being the president, and and all the videos that I saw of uh the Hall of Fame ceremonies were incredible. Listen, I love tennis, I love seeing Billie Jean King. I haven't seen Martine and Albert Telova hit a tennis ball in 25 years, and I thought that was the coolest thing because she had that that left-handed swipe of that nobody else has ever been able to duplicate. And then the shot, your brother kept peppering it back to Federer, kept peppering it back, and Federer with the backhand, backhand, he did it behind the back. It was behind the back, the behind the back. Yeah, the behind the back. I hope everybody saw that. That was incredible.

That was fun. Oh, that was amazing. By the way, you'll love this. I said, I said to my brother yesterday, um, I said, Man, I said, that was how about that shot from Roger? He and and of course, typical Johnny says, Yeah, it was a nice setup by me, wasn't it? I set him up perfectly. His reaction was great too. He threw the racket down. That was good. Yeah, no, he threw the racket down. All right, Big Daddy, other news to get to quickly, because I know tennis and golf, you know, are our main focus today, but big news in the NFL, with Aaron Donald uh announcing that he's coming back, no surprise. I think we all expected this back to the Rams. Everyone already talking about you know, the Rams likely the favorite, which to me, I I gotta be honest, I'm a little bit surprised at that based on you know Seattle and what they did. I know you know they're huge rivals, even the Niners in with a chance, although I think they're getting a little long in the teeth myself. But what how does this change the nature of the uh NFC with Aaron Donald coming back to the Rams?

Well, I'll tell you one thing. Those offensive coordinators that are coming in there and are playing the Rams right now are saying, man, we have enough problems with trying to block Miles Garrett. Now you've got this guy back, and you basically what it does is you're gonna get a lot of double teaming and it's gonna leave somebody one-on-one. It's gonna make it very, very difficult to run fourth pass against that Rams uh defense. They are stacked on both sides of the ball. You know, obviously Seattle, they're the Super Bowl champions, and until they get dethrone, they are the champions. You as far as uh the Niners, I know Lauren doesn't want to hear this. They got some issues up there. But uh, you know, it's the old saying everybody has to line up on Sundays and may the best team win.

Yeah, no, I'm looking forward to the NFL getting underway, but the college football season already underway, Lauren. I know you're you're big on your ducks this year, and the ducks look like they got a serious shot to go all the way. Uh were you happy, Lauren and Doug? I know both of you guys were following this, to see Big Bill with UNC get the win in Dublin. There were seven and a half point dogs against TCU, but Belichick's defense actually looked like they had something going on. Were you surprised andor happy that maybe the heat a little bit off Big Bill, at least for the moment? And how about your ducks, Lauren?

I I'm just gonna quickly Doug, I will acquiesce to you because you're the expert. But yes, I like the position that the Ducks are in. I've been saying it for 55 years every year. So why stop now? The Ducks are gonna win the national championship. Uh, and I was happy for Bill Belichick. It's a great opening win, great way to start the season. And we didn't have to hear about his girlfriend. It's more about the team, it's more about the functionality of you know, he he's learning the college game. So he's an amazing coach. He he deserves his props.

We we we did see a little bit, uh, Doug, of the old Bill Belichick coming back after the win, storm not storming, but walking briskly off the field when one of the reporters was trying to get a word in edgewise. That wasn't gonna happen. So I guess, you know, the ornery bill is back, but that's the winning bill, right?

Yeah, absolutely. Uh, you know, it's standard operating procedure, right? Uh, coach runs into the locker room and the sideline reporter interviews uh somebody going in, interviews the other guy going out. And Coach Belichick, he was he was just dodging her. He was like a running back, and she was he was evading a tackler. And that drew a lot of ire on social media, but I'm like, what do you expect? It's Bill Belichick. And I'm sure somebody told him before the game, hey, you're gonna have to do an interview at halftime, one way or the other. And I'm sure he's like, uh, no, I don't do that. Uh, but this was this was the most significant win for Coach Belichick in his short tenure in North Carolina. Uh, they beat a good T TCU team, so we'll see if you can build on that. The schedule is brutal. And oh, by the way, Lawrence Ducks, of all the games in week one, 24.5 point favorite over Boise State. I mean, you got number one Ohio State playing ball state, you got Texas playing Texas State. I think Oregon actually has a pretty competitive game on their hand. I don't think they'll cover the 24 and a half, but I think that is a nice tune-up when you play somebody somebody halfway decent Oregon against Boise State.

Well, to your point, didn't Boise State beat Oregon at Oregon like two, three years ago? I wouldn't let I wouldn't be Laura doesn't remember that, big daddy.

No, but we we've had some pretty embarrassing losses to Boise State, and especially the one that everyone's probably thinking is the Legarrett Bunt uh Blunt punch that got him ejected and was pretty embarrassing for the program.

All right. Well, listen, um, I want I want to talk a little bit while when while we wrap things up about now what happens at the U.S. Open. So you guys can prep me a little bit because I'm heading back out there uh momentarily for the day session. Then I've got the Naomi Osaka match again late night tonight. That'll be after Ben Shelton kicks things off. And by the way, just my last little bone throw to my colleagues at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, because Roger Federer will receive his Hall of Fame ring in the ring ceremony in between matches tonight. So we're pumped up about that. The crowd will be there in full force. Go crazy one more time for Roger before he goes on holiday because it's been a busy week for him and his family. By the way, shout out to his wife, Mirka, in her presenting speech was absolutely incredible. Off the charts. I mean, Mary Corilla was amazing too. We sort of expected that from Mary because she's a wordsmith, she's an incredible storyteller, not gonna downplay how great her speech was. But Mirka, first of all, no one knew that Mirka was gonna be the one introducing Roger. A lot of people thought, well, is Nadal coming in? Is it gonna be someone else, some big-time other athlete? But it was Mirka, and she hit it out of the park. The emotions from her was amazing. But back to the tennis now at the open, because this sort of opens the door, Doug, and I want to get your thoughts on this because we see this in golf a lot, right? Where, you know, by by day three, day four, the quote unquote big names are out, right? So it's sort of wide open. I'm not gonna say we've got that on the men's side because we got Alcaraz. We'll see how he looks in his first match in almost five months today. He's still the odds makers' favorite, but it does open the door for the Ben Sheltons, the Taylor Fritzes, the Francis Tiafos, and other players, not just the other Americans, to say, you know what? Maybe this is this time. What say you, Doug?

I say we're gonna have a USA men's champion at the end of the U.S. Open. I like Fritz. I love Shelton. I think he withdrew last year with that shoulder injury, uh, and his dad talked him into not continuing. Um, and and I like him. Uh, listen, I'm the University of Florida guy, right? Go gators on Ben Shelton, but I I think he's on the verge now of doing something special. And then on the ladies side, guys, Coco Golf. Uh again, I hate to be the the American here, right? I'm always rooting for Americans, but that's how I see it. The opportunity, the door is wide open now for the uh American men, and I think they'll take advantage of this week. And that'll be big, guys. That'll be significant.

As you can see, Doug, I love to be the American, okay? And I'm gonna be the American. I'm supposed to be unbiased, which I will be when I go on air with ESPN, but I'll be fired up because the American men are all playing at a very high level. I figured I didn't mention Tommy Paul, who I called his match yesterday with James Blake, Big Daddy. He came back from dropping the first set, won easily. But it again, this is the opportunity now, Big Daddy, for some of these guys. And of course, you got to put Zrerev in there, who won in Paris this year as first major, some of the other youngsters like Manchic, etc. Rafael Hodar, by the way, I love from Spain. But when you're talking about some of the veteran Americans like Tiafo, like Taylor Fritz, like Ben Shelton, what do you think, Big Daddy, for the pressure-wise? Because now the pressure is there for these guys a little bit different than it's been in years past.

You know what? I think it's great because it brings out the competitiveness in you. You know, I would rather feel like the whole world's on top of me and I have to perform because the world is watching. Yes, you represent your country, but you represent yourself, and that's where the competitive juices start flowing. And I think it's an advantage, I don't think it's a disadvantage. You know, I I gotta be honest with you, I watched last night that whole five-hour thing, which for me, Doug, is like would have been a couple of years ago, would have been like me dreading going to the dentist to get my teeth pulled. But since joining Patrick and getting into this whole tennis thing, and really like, wow, while paying attention, Lauren and I are texting each other, and you know, hey, did you see him throw up and this and that and all that? Uh golf is off for a couple of weeks, and the President's Cup uh will resume at the end of September at Medina. That's the best international players and obviously the best American players. The only problem with the President's Cup is the international team has won only once in 19 years. It's not a very competitive thing like the Ryder Cup, but we shall see. Medina's a great course, Chicago, a great city. Uh, and I'm anxious to find out if Captain Brent Snedeker goes young. Is he going to go the usual suspects? Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantley, Jordan Smith, or we get some new blood in there. And I'm hoping he goes new blood. I want to see young guys get an opportunity to play in these competitions. For golfers, it's a very nerve-wracking match play type scenario that they're not used to, maybe since college. So that's what that's what's on the horizon for golf guys.
