All right, welcome everyone. Another edition of Mac Daddy. I am Patrick McIrneau. He is rich Big Daddy Selgado. He is Lauren Emery, our esteemed producer, making stuff happen for us. And of course, today we welcome back the man, BG Brad Gilbert from Oklahoma City right now. I am coming to you, everyone, live from London here at the O2 Arena for the Labor Cup. Big Daddy's been traveling all over the place. Lauren going out to Oregon to see his ducks in a couple of weeks. This is what Mac Daddy is all about, presented by our friends at Volition. By the way, you want to check us out, go to YouTube, subscribe. Yeah, we got our Dose Hombre sponsor. We got our fire department coffee as well, of which I've had a few already this morning because it's a little later for me here in London. Just did a little setup for the Labor Cup team, uh the broadcast team, which I'm happy to be part of for the first time now that I'm not the vice captain. Let's start things off with you, Mr. Gilbert, Brad Gilbert. I don't, I we had you on a few weeks ago, but that was before the U.S. Open ended, right? That was right during the final weekend was coming up. So give us your overall thoughts on what transpired the final weekend of the U.S. Open.
SPEAKER_03You know, Z has been incredibly opportunistic with the great opportunity that he was given at the French, with the great draw that you know he found his way through. And exactly the same with the U.S. Open. Literally doesn't beat anybody in the top 15 to the final after struggling at the start. And he's had a great head-to-head matchup against Shelton. So I was not surprised by the result. I was hoping it would be different from Shelton, but kudos to Zverev, because sometimes it's easy, Patrick, to mess up a great draw. And he certainly didn't.
SPEAKER_04You know, he I was just mentioning from mentioning Sinner not being there, by the way.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Well, there's no asterisk in tennis. People say, oh, there's an asterisk. Well, you know what? He was injured. Obviously, Alcaraz coming off, you know, not playing in four and a half months. That's why I said Zverev took advantage of a great opportunity. And kudos to him because it's easy to mess up a good draw.
SPEAKER_05It's sort of like in football, right, Big Daddy, when you, you know, the team, the the the favorite team gets upset in the playoffs. And then but Brad, I'm gonna steal Brad's line because he uses this. I'm surprised he didn't use it there. He's probably just trying to be nice. The Betty Crocker draw. Uh, and what do you think that means, Big Daddy? The Betty Crocker draw, because Brad likes to use that. What do you think that means?
SPEAKER_07I would take it as the team that uh what do you call it? The uh the David Goliath uh analogy. And I could be wrong by saying it that way, but uh that's what I'm I think you're pretty spot on. Yeah, easy. Yeah, I think you're pretty spotted.
SPEAKER_03Hey, I'll give you the Betty Crocker uh football analogy. You know who was Betty Crocker last year? New England Patriots. Yeah, they got they went from the a terrible team, they got an unbelievable schedule to take advantage of. So that's what I call Betty Crocker when you have this unbelievable draw or schedule.
SPEAKER_05Got it, got it. So we're so tell us about the trip out to California, Big Daddy, because Brad's in Oklahoma City, he lives in California. You went out there for the game, which I told you right here on the show. I told you and our guy Sal Powell, who both predicted the Giants would win. I said, not gonna happen. So get give us the rundown because that was blowout city out there.
SPEAKER_07Well, you know, my uh my trip was uh I guess it was diversified, and what I mean by that, obviously, I was I was out there uh as you know, Rich Big Daddy Salgado, CEO of MyTerm Life.ai, and Big Daddy, co-host of MacDaddy. So I was doing two things at once representing us uh the show with Brian Cranston and Aaron Paul and JB Woodworth, our great sponsors. Uh they had they built uh bread. I don't know if you know this. Next time you go to a game there, they have a Dos Ombres bar inside the stadium. And it was there was plenty of tequila flowing, plenty of Mescal. I think I sent pictures back. Uh yes, you did. We appreciated that. Yeah. Showing the celebration, and uh uh they just loved hearing about Patrick having his dos hombres every night during the uh tail end of the uh US Open. So there will always be plenty of uh Dos Hombres at the mackerel home after Brian and Aaron heard that. JB told him. And uh so uh so obviously the Giants went out there, Jackson Doc got hurt, they didn't win. Um but uh one thing I was sharing with Brad before we got on was uh I was at the airport and the Raider fans everywhere, everywhere, and I landed before kickoff when they played the Chargers and they beat him. The what the Raider fans even walking towards the stadium was in droves. It was very impressive. It was kind of like watching, and I know they have great fans, they have a great uh travel. It's like watching college uh when you watch the Raiders, uh, the fans, because they are everywhere, painted up, jerseys, everything you can imagine. So that entailed my Monday, but uh Tuesday night, uh Dos Ambres had a launch at a Hollywood uh hotel, and there was some uh more tequila flying, and uh had I had my own plane, I could have probably brought you back, P Mac, like 10 cases because there was plenty left over. And they were like telling people, take it, take it, take it. And I'm going, oh man, it's uh it's a pity that I can't take any because I'm flying back. Uh there's be no room, and I'm sure it even wouldn't make it through uh cust, you know, uh what do you call it, the baggage claim? All the uh folks there would probably be licking their chops looking at that, but uh anyway, so that was the trip. Uh you know, I'm back, and then you know, the uh the show doesn't end, it keeps going.
SPEAKER_04Can't hear you, P Mac?
SPEAKER_07All right, now we get it.
SPEAKER_04There you go. Brad, I got a question for you. Uh, are the are the Raiders winning ugly? Are they get do they have a fortunate schedule so far? Because the Saints game is is a is an interesting one. Tyler Shuck has that team looking pretty good out there in New Orleans, and you got a it's a tough trip. Are you how do you feel about the Raiders?
SPEAKER_03Well, to uh to Mac Daddy, uh Big Daddy, there it it the weirdest thing is there's infinitely more Raiders fans in Southern California. If you actually go to a Raider game in Vegas, the road team, whoever plays the Raiders, will take over the stadium. So there's far fewer Raid Raider fans than there are like in the state of California, especially in LA. In LA it goes Rams, it goes Raiders, the Chargers are a distant third, and they should have never left San Diego. The Raiders actually, unlike New England from a couple of years ago, we were coming off being the wild worst team in the L. I don't know why, but uh, you know, so I'm shocked we're 2-0. I think we can beat the Saints, but then we have a brutal schedule. Whatever happens in Costa City, we've got like Kansas City, New England, Buffalo. Uh, so tough stretch. But if we can get to, yeah, I don't know, four and three or four and four stay afloat, I just want to see Mendoza play because I'm already tired of Cousins after two games, even though we're two and up. And no Brock Bauer. That's I am amazed we are two and oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, and the fact that you're kind of built up uh a lot better in the trenches in the last couple of years, and Big Daddy would be the first one to tell you that's important.
SPEAKER_07Oh, right, big fellow. They they definitely have pieced a better group up front. Um, listen, at the end of the day, it's not how pretty you win, it's you win. And like Al David would say, Al Davis' famous saying, just win, baby.
SPEAKER_03Hey, and you know, speaking of the my the greatness of the Raiders, you know who should be in jail is Pete Carroll and his sons for the money and what they took last year, how bad they did. In tennis, Big Daddy, when you get fired, you're lucky Patrick, you know, is it you're lucky to get a plane ticket home. I mean, that the son that Pete had, he still gets paid three, four more years, 15 million a year. It's incredible now that the coaches, when they get fired, still get paid in full. You used to be in football, when you get fired, you don't get paid. It's pretty amazing the gigs the coaches get now in the NFL.
SPEAKER_07Hey, I walked past Pete's house and and uh in Hermosa Beach, so I get it.
SPEAKER_04Let's talk about last night. Uh Big Daddy watched last night's game, I suppose. Uh, we had uh Brian Baldiger was on a couple weeks ago with Brad, actually. And and in the conversation, he said he thought the Packers were one of the best teams, but that was when Micah Parsons comes back. They're still several weeks from that happening. Uh are they the Packers? They can't stop a nosebleed. Are the Packers in trouble? They're one and two.
SPEAKER_07Well, listen, I'll tell you one thing. The uh the Atlanta Falcons, their offensive line and their running game was sensational last night. I mean, their running backs, both of them, were they were carrying a load and they were, you know, they were hitting it up in there, and the O-line play was great for them last night. Green Bay seemed to be, I don't know, they just uh they didn't look in place, so to speak. They were missing a lot of tackles, and uh, but you gotta give kudos to Kevin Stefansky and that group down there in Atlanta because they just went in there, and that doesn't happen to Green Bay too often like that, and uh it was great.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's their first first home loss, home opening loss in 14 seasons. So uh that'll tell you what that what that accomplishment means. But but Brad, they brought Michael Penix back, and Atlanta looked like a totally different team last night. In the game of football, to your point about Mendoza, sometimes just that one piece is all you need. Is that why you want Mendoza back, or do you just want to see what you have?
SPEAKER_03Okay, let's go back to what Baldi said about Micah Parsons. One player. One player uh uh in football doesn't change things like one player can in basketball or tennis. One player in football doesn't change everything quarterback. As good as Micah Parsons is, uh Big Daddy will tell you, he ain't no Lawrence Taylor. Lawrence Taylor's the best football player I've seen in my lifetime, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Nice player, but the Packers look like a 6-11 team at best last night. Uh-huh. Um, the reason we want to see this kid play Mendoza, I even though he didn't look that good, and I know you know the Giants waited on Manning and obviously the Packers on Rodgers, but now, you know, a lot more of these good young quarterbacks, you know, get the opportunity. I think our line is better, and and pretty much we know what cousins is. He's just a guy. He's like one of those 20 to 25 quarterbacks. You know, he's a stop gap. So great, but he's not where if the Raiders are going to be really good, and now in football, you have a big advantage. If you do get a quarterback that's good when he's young, he's on the rookie salary, so you can actually build pieces around him because then once you have to pay him $70 million a year, it hurts the cap. So your best chance to be really good quickly is if your quarterback is on the rookie salary. So that's why I want to see what Mendoza can do.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, you definitely 100%. I I gotta I gotta say, go just a quick little note on last night's game. The Packers' O line looked like it needs two more first-round draft picks. I mean, Atlanta's defense, kudos to them. They came after him last night. And would they sack him like three or four times? I think I got tired after the third time. Yeah, I mean, it was just uh uh again, it was a good win by Atlanta, especially to go into Green Bay and do that when they a lot of people were saying, man, they stink, you know. And it's funny how people evaluate teams after one game, you know, or two games. There's you know, 15 or 16 more down the road. You gotta give uh you gotta give it a minute there to uh decide if a team's good enough.
SPEAKER_04Well, well, we don't know if they stink or not because again, the Packers couldn't stop a nosebleed last night, so maybe just the Packers suck. So that could also be part of it. Uh Brad, you mentioned the Chargers. They're 0-2, got to go into 2-0 Buffalo. Uh, we heard last week from South Palantonio that you have 4% chance of making the playoffs if you start 0-3. Are the Chargers toast?
SPEAKER_03I mean, I would say most teams 0-3. Yeah, you would be toast. You start thinking about you know, football probably now in 17, you think about it in quarters. Harbaugh is a great coach, he'll figure it out. But I I think that he probably needs to understand that his best player should be slinging the ball, and he loves to run the ball and he's a trenches guy. So maybe they don't have that team. So part of being older, you know, when you're a coach, is you have to constantly uh figure out that where the game is going and can I move with it. So Harbaugh is an old school coach, but he doesn't like to throw the ball 50, 60 times a game. He he, you know, he is you it's funny as for a former quarterback, he's more uh of a trenches guy. I don't think he's gonna be a big thing.
SPEAKER_07He's a Beauchembacler disciple. That's why.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. He's not as he's not as I don't think he's as innovative as his brother, coaching wise. Um, but maybe he's more involved in all the specific offensive teams. But if they don't make some changes quickly, uh some rumbling, and you know, or they need a new offensive coordinator, but their quarterback is very good, but they need to let him like, you know, run the offense a lot more than a Harbaugh, you know, loves a run first down, run second down, and then pass when they're in trouble. That's not a recipe at the moment when your best player is the quarterback, and maybe you you you're not as good in some other areas.
SPEAKER_04Let me ask you the same question basically, but in tennis terms. What player did you have to adjust the most to as a coach? Uh, and how difficult was that to make that that transition?
SPEAKER_03Um, I think this is an overrated thing for football coaches, and I'm not like that. I feel like whoever I coach, guys, I I'm gonna make them the best version of themselves. I don't want them to conform to my style. I feel like there's a lot of NFL coaches, college coaches that they have a system and a philosophy. And this is great. But what happens if you don't have that personnel to run that type of team, you're going down in the flame. So I'd like to think that whoever I'm coaching, I'm gonna adapt to the strength and weaknesses of what we got and try to make them the best version of what they can become. Because I I'm not crazy about a system.
SPEAKER_04Speaking of the best version and what we can become, the show is getting an upgrade because P Mac is back. We still can't hear you.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Big Big Daddy, what game are you looking forward to the most this weekend? Do you have have you been have you had a chance to look at the schedule and circle around?
SPEAKER_07I have not had a chance yet to look at it, but I I'll tell you the college game is really what I I hate to do.
SPEAKER_04A lot of teams played.
SPEAKER_07Uh Old Miss and Florida. I I was uh my client is uh David Caldwell, the GM of uh uh The Gators, and uh him and another friend of mine, Nick Polk. Exactly, they as soon as they beat Auburn last week, they they sold out. Like the tickets are gone. Like, you know, if I had to go down there, well, I shouldn't use me, but if anyone else had to go down there right now to try to buy a ticket, you'd have to go on the second uh second hand market because there are no tickets to be had anywhere.
SPEAKER_05Can you guys hear me now?
SPEAKER_07We can hear you being we're talking now.
SPEAKER_05We're talking about it on my computer. All right, but hold on a second. I just want to I just want to say this. I just want to say this before we get into college. I'm sitting here on my computer, and I'm like, I keep like raising my hand like I'm you know, like I'm in school, and I'm like trying to ask a question, and Lauren keeps asking Brad questions. I'm like, what who's supposed to be hosting this damn show right here? Then I'm like, holy shit, they can't hear me. Okay, so Andrew thinks.
SPEAKER_04You're welcome, asshole.
SPEAKER_05Thank you, you idiot. Now I'm on the phone, and it's like much better. How is it Andrew? Can you explain to me how why it looked so much better on my phone and I can hear everyone? Brad's not breaking up, which you was. I don't know what's going on. But I go I got before we go back to college, I gotta I gotta throw this out there because this is a question I just wanted to ask to Brad and to you, to all you three guys, experts on football. What oh you I heard you talking about the Chargers. To me, they're one of the O-2 teams that are in the most trouble. Plus, they got to go play Buffalo now, so they're gonna be 0-3. Uh the most surprising 2-0 team, at least to me so far, has been the Chiefs. Now I know it's Mahomes and company, but how good they've looked running the ball. What other O-2 team is desperate to win a game? I know you got the Colts, you got the Texans at 0-2, which is very surprising. I'll start with you, Brad. Which 2-0 team are you most impressed by, and which O2 team is are you most surprised by and is in the most trouble?
SPEAKER_03So the tr the the the I always think about the the the quarterback and the coach. So it shouldn't be so surprising that Casey is 2-0, but I'll take those two, you know, I'll take that coach over any other coach, and I'll probably take Mahomes over any other QB, and and considering you probably got them on good value to be 2-0, let's go with the Chiefs. And the Texans, everybody was talking about them being like a legit team, but the AFC is loaded, and that quarterback who was great as his rookie in his rookie season, hasn't been the guy since. So I I'd say the Texans are probably in a bit of trouble. And watch out for the Chiefs because man, that coach is such an innovator, and he's gotten older. He's not coaching like he's an older guy. I'm very impressed with him. Big Daddy, what do you say to that?
SPEAKER_07I agree with Brad. I mean, the Chiefs, you know, I I they don't surprise me at all, really, because they've got incredible player. I mean, the just Andy Reid alone, it says it all. You know what I mean? He is just he comes up every year with something that just comes out of the hat. He pulls a rabbit out of the hat. And the running game there is insane, you know, because uh he uh uh again, 2-0 Kansas City. I'm happy they're 2-0. I am a big fan of theirs, and but you didn't know with Mahomes coming back and some pieces missing, they haven't missed a beat. They're just uh they're just doing what they're you know, what they do, what they normally do. It's not it's not surprising.
SPEAKER_05What about you, Lauren? What about the what what what about the commanders, Lauren? What do you think about that? Now the quarterback's out too.
SPEAKER_04Commanders are done. Uh, I I think the oh the only 0-2 team that I think has a good chance of potentially rebounding is Tampa Bay, just because their division is so average. So I think they and you know Baker Mayfield is is good. I think losing Mike Evans was tough on them. I think the two and oh team that impresses me the most is Cincinnati. They built up their defense, they finally have a defense to be proud of, and we already know what Burrow and Chase. I mean, that team's good. I think they're very good.
SPEAKER_05Hey, where were you guys going on the college? Where were you guys going on the college? Take over, Lauren. I'll be like just sitting here reacting to what I want to do.
SPEAKER_04I already said I already said I'm a downgrade P Mac, but I will say, Brad, I like the color.
SPEAKER_05What were you talking about for college? Let me hear.
SPEAKER_04What we're doing in Tennessee, Big Daddy was breaking it down. And and then there's a ton of ranked games. And then, of course, was um the Oregon Ducks going to USC. And and that they haven't beaten Oregon in 3,461 days. So hopefully that continues. But uh, there's a ton of ranked games going on this weekend, big ones.
SPEAKER_07Hey, you know, the one thing that I uh not to go backwards, but the one thing that I did forget to say was our our boys um at Dos Sombras, they were very generous in making sure that I had plenty, plenty, uh for the ride or the flight back and to have. And uh not only one, but you know, they they still got their favorite miss gal. Yeah. And uh to make sure I get it right there, those hombres. Uh yeah, so that was uh you know, obviously a big part of the trip, too, because uh we wanted to show how much we appreciate them uh being with us. But uh to get back to the college thing, yeah, there's uh listen, like I said earlier, that old Miss Florida game, the one that comes out of there is probably gonna go right to the top five. You if you think about it, because SEC play is that's NFL play, if you look at it. It's really Texas.
SPEAKER_03Hey, hey, fellas, I don't know about you. I I really struggle now with college football because it's no longer college football. It's it is like literally, okay, they're talking about a $50 million payroll at Texas, and Cal can't compete, they're ninth in the uh in the ACC, which is bizarre, with a $20 million salary. This is not sustainable. This is not sustainable, and programs will start folding when they're paying this kind of money, and they're not gonna be relevant. So I don't be begrudge the kids for getting paid. It's just uh it it's basically a junior, it's not a junior pro league. It's uh you have the G League and the NBA. So it's no longer the greatness of college. This is basically you know an understudy that now guys, oh shoot, I want to stay in college. I can make more money as a decent quarterback in college than being a six-round pick. It used to be, God, I want to get out and get in the pros and see what I can do.
SPEAKER_07I I I just struggle with this whole thing because I'm old. Hey, Brad, you can stay in college and make more money than in the NFL.
SPEAKER_03I know this is weird. This is really weird. I don't know about you, Patrick. I think it's incredibly weird. And then you have the ACC Cal in Stanford going across country. It's like they had to have zones that they're not.
SPEAKER_07That makes no sense.
SPEAKER_03That's yeah, the government shouldn't be involved, but whatever happened to the NCAs, they've gone meeting, so I'm a little disillusioned what's happening.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, that that's part that's partly why I went to DC, Brad, to discuss the international athlete issue, you know, particularly as it pertains to tennis and other Olympic sports. And the reason the government is getting involved is because the NCAA didn't do jack. That's why they're getting involved, because the NCAA, who's responsible, and I agree with you a thousand percent. You know, how about the leagues that they've always tried to have in football outside the NFL, the XFL and all these different leagues? Oh, now it's college is the is the league. They finally found one that works from a financial perspective. So there's gotta be some guardrails put in place for football and basketball. Number one, you can't let this go on. You're 100% right, BJ. It's unsustainable. And and other sports like tennis, like swimming, like track and field, like men's, you know that men's soccer now, Brad? Uh I bet you'll be surprised to hear this. Well over 50% of the players in Division I men's soccer are international players now. You know, the tennis numbers are close to 70% now for men and women. So that's why I got involved in that issue because as these programs and universities are getting the squeeze because of football and the economics and basketball, you're you are so right that they're gonna look at their entire programs and say, okay, if we got to spend X amount on football, we want to stay competitive in the SEC or the Pac 12 or whatever the hell it is, the big 12 Big 12, uh, we're gonna have to cut X, Y, and Z. And I'm very concerned that that X, Y, and Z could be tennis, could be other sports that are to me, they're not money makers, they're not revenue makers. But the last time I checked, that wasn't what college athletics was supposed to be about.
SPEAKER_03You know, those sports, I think hopefully I don't see it in my lifetime, but I think, Patrick, we're headed for a lot of college now. Like in Europe, they don't have college sports like we do, but tennis, volleyball, so many of these sports, uh uh if your football program fails massively, they're gonna become club sports where you're not like really part of a uh a conference and champion because it's like if all of a sudden your football team is flaming out, you're losing 30 or 40 million dollars, presidents are gonna say that's not what these universities were founded on. Us you know, having a good football season to survive or having a flame out season. That to me isn't what college sports is about. I like I said, I don't be begrudge the kids, but what they've got going at the moment isn't sustainable.
SPEAKER_05Listen, you guys can't go ahead, Big Daddy. No, go ahead.
SPEAKER_07No, sorry, go ahead, P Matt. Finish it up. Finish it though.
SPEAKER_05Well, my my thought was that also the other one of the other issues that's tied into this is that do you guys know if you've heard any of my interviews, um, I try to I try to bring this to the attention of people that in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, there were 1,200 NCAA athletes participating in the Olympic Games. Guess how many, Big Daddy, of the 1,200 were representing the United States of America in the Olympic Games. Out of 1,200, how how many do you think? Just take a wild guess.
SPEAKER_0720. You mean college athletes?
SPEAKER_03I'd say college athletes. Okay, because oh wait, you know, we're good in swimming and and volleyball. I'm gonna say I was thinking 20. I'd say two, uh 387.
SPEAKER_05Oh, oh my god. You did not wait. This is this is the genius of Brad. This is unfreaking believable. Do you know the number what the actual number is? 386. I mean, I mean, come on. This the guy's a savant. No, no, he's a savant. I'm telling you, the the way this guy's brain works, the numbers, uh Lauren, I swear to God, I've never I mean, I've seen him been do stuff like this for years on ESPN when we worked together, and I miss my guy there not working, being able to work with him anymore. But we had a great run.
SPEAKER_03Patrick, you know, like what you're just talking about, international, like like the swimmer, the French swimmer that came over and swam in the States and all these, they come over like swimming and volleyball, and a lot of these sports that aren't football, they get great training that they wouldn't get at home, and it it it it's football. Those are the sports I'm worried about specifically with what's happening with football.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, rowing screen. Yeah, we're we're there we're we meaning we meaning the American college university system are training international athletes to then go back and compete against us in the Olympic Games. That that seems to get the attention of some people that I've spoken to. But Lauren, I gotta tell you, I've been very surprised at how many people, many of whom in our world of media and sports, and a lot of people in the political world too, had absolutely no idea that this was happening in collegiate sports. Do you find that surprising?
SPEAKER_04It is it is it's sad and it's surprising. And I think people just complain about uh the money and they don't really think about the regulation and and who who it's affecting and the trickle down. Uh, you also, I I respect the fact that you're using your platform for good. That's what we're trying to do here on this show. So it it's a it's a beautiful thing that we're trying to do. And then you speaking of numbers, I think what's what's kind of cool is that there's always these sports stories that are inspiring. And despite baseball being run by teams like the Dodgers, here you have the White Sox making the playoffs after losing 324 games in three seasons. So those are the kind of things that we're trying to focus on. These these these things about the the lost college athlete and and the beautiful stories that still happen within sports despite all the the money. So again, uh I I applaud you, P Mac, for what you're doing with it because it can't be easy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was just um keeping going on that probably now one of my biggest pet peeves for college. It used to be the undiscovered story. Some guy you recruit out of nowhere that nobody else is, and he becomes you coached him up, you he becomes like this unbelievable player out of nowhere. But then instantly he hits the transfer portal, yeah, and it's like you know, it's like three schools in three years, uh, or where can I get the BBD, the bigger, better deal? So all of that kind of when you hear the commentator now, I was watching a football game last year. Oh, he played at Oregon, he played at Auburn, he played at oh my it's like whatever happened to you know you know going to the school because of school, but I understand the system. It's just hard to listen to it. That like, oh my god, he's been to four places already, and now he's a star. And it's like you you went to school because of the greatness of the school, but obviously we live in a different world now.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, it's totally uh totally, totally, totally different game now. Total different game, and it is about the money, and uh, you know, the I got an argument one time. I was on a show one time, and uh the one of the guests was an attorney, and he kept saying, Well, God bless these kids, go transfer as much as you can, get as much money as you can. If you gotta go to three or four places to go get it, and I looked at him and I was like, Well, don't you go to college to get a degree? Like, isn't that the most important thing? Academics before athletics, and he's so much for that. Yeah, gotta be good for your business, though.
SPEAKER_04I mean, you're now you got more pros to it.
SPEAKER_07Like, I had three heads, you know, and I'm like, what is so what are you confused about? How does a guy get a diploma? I mean, he can always go back to school, I get that, but you can't always play football. But still, it makes all this bouncing around.
SPEAKER_05It's just it would be it would be it would be like if for the NFL, like you could get traded every year, right? Like it just happened every year. I mean, there's gotta be there's gotta be some rules, just like there are in all businesses, um, particularly sports leagues, um, where you know you could get traded, you know what it is, you you're you're like you said, Brad, you're a rookie, you're under the rookie contract as a quarterback, so that's a certain number of years, same in the NBA. And then at some point, um, you know, you can get traded. But that's I mean, that's what has to happen. There have to be some rules put in place where it's at least people understand what they're dealing with. Right now, there's absolutely no rules. And I don't, and and as you said, Brad, I don't begrudge the when it back to the international athlete issue, I don't begrudge the athletes at all for doing it because it's a great opportunity. Like we you know, when you and I played, and you know, the inner the the European guys, if they made it on the tour, they'd make it on the tour. Otherwise, they play club tennis in France or Germany. Maybe they'd be teaching tennis, maybe they'd get another job. Now they're like, oh, just go play in college because now I'll get to four more years. At great with great coaching, and I don't begrudge this is what I'm getting at. I don't begrudge the coaches either. A lot of them, you and I know well, Brad, that we played against, and you know, they're just trying to keep their job. So they they're forced to actually be able to do it.
SPEAKER_03Competing in the system, yeah, Patrick. You you're you were on Capitol Hill and everything. They're competing in the system that they're allowed to compete in. It just allows the teams with the bigger budgets to buy things, and it should be more about recruiting and being able to coach. Now it's much more about the payroll and can you deliver. So that you know, and you went to Stanford because of the greatness of Dick Gould and the greatness of the university, and that's probably out the window now, unfortunately. I'm not gonna be bitter, but when somebody asks me, it's just hard to listen on college football when the commentator kind of, oh, last year he played at Auburn, the year before he played at Oregon. And it's like, okay, so that's part of it. It's like each one of these guys, and if the guy is successful, he's already in the NFL. But that's kind of what it is, and it's like kind of me, it's weird.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, getting back to beyond weird getting back to college, you know, uh one of the games that we um that's really intriguing too is Iowa and Michigan. That's uh Iowa finally has an offense. You know, they've always had this uh defensive-minded uh philosophy there, and their offense has always been so-and-so. But uh suspect that's gonna be an interesting game tomorrow. Um, you know, Iowa going into Ann Arbor, and I wouldn't be shocked. Iowa could give them a run and actually could beat them. So uh don't put all your eggs in one basket there, Michigan. Uh I really think that's a game to uh really uh pay attention to.
SPEAKER_03All right. You know, uh but God bless you for you know, but my foothill, my foothill owls, you know, we were junior college and pepperdine, we didn't have a football team.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_07Are you a cow guy? Are you a cow guy though?
SPEAKER_03I'm totally a cow guy, and how about this? What are the odds of this? In my lifetime, I'm 65. You know how many Rolls Bowls the Bears have been to one or two?
SPEAKER_04Zero with Marshall with Lynch and Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Rodgers, yeah.
SPEAKER_03They got they got actually they tied that. They they got passed over, but they've never been in the never been in a title hunt, never had uh never been in a big bowl game. Nope, not in my lifetime.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I gotta I want to ask you something about Cal though. Where were you? What was the situation with the band is on the field? The band is on the field. Yeah, tell us about you. BG's version of that game, the game.
SPEAKER_03Um, I had literally just got back home from Asia.
SPEAKER_05Asia, probably Asia, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was playing like, you know, um, and literally I was supposed to go to the game, but I was like, I I think I literally got home the day before. And I remember watching that uh and almost like not watching the final kickoff. Um and it's it's pretty crazy that 44 years later that you'll still see that play and and hear the people talking about. Um it's like it's one of the ultimate, and it's like it's never over till it's over. Um and hearing the players actually talk about that play and how it happened, and then seeing the guy, you know, hold up the like that was and then the band member getting knocked down. One of the funniest great plays of all time.
SPEAKER_07Hey, one last well, one thing I have to say, we've got to give a shout out to my man Ron Rivera at Cal. That's a very close friend of our family's and uh a big advocate for uh myself and my brother Jimmy, who's a coach. Um so go Ron and uh go Cal. Yeah, he beat that money. Say that, Brad?
SPEAKER_05I like what you said. I like what you said, Brad, about um, you know, because it it it it it brings back memories for me, right? You know, going to Cal to play tennis and you know, the Stanford Cal rivalry, the you know, we called it the big with the big game. And and sadly, we've we're losing some of that in college football. But the but the other side of it is it seems to be more popular than ever. Like the football game, you know, the college football game, the ratings and stuff. But you know, the part of me is like, yeah, I mean, you know, I got my our buddies, you know, Stanford's got to go play, you know, the tennis. They're playing North Carolina and Duke. I'm like, this is bizarre, right? It was like Stanford Cal, S C, U C L A. Like, that's how we grew up. And that's like the regional nature of college sports. That's what I think we're we're we're missing now because you know, you grew up in California, so you were like, yeah, man, I'm playing a foothill. Now I'm going to Pepperdine, and I'm playing, and now you live out there. It's like, it's part of like the fabric of who you are. Um, and we're losing that, but yet I guess this is the you know the business side of it's too too hard to you know keep it away and keep it at bay. You know what?
SPEAKER_03As we get older. Unfortunately, if you think old people think you're weird about things, and and and and you have to keep moving. It like I said, I think it's sad. I probably the thing that has to happen in college football is college football take about 50, 60 teams and just be one division. And that's what you go on. All the rest of the other sports need to go back to conferences in their area and and make the more regional. Uh football is always gonna survive, but just like you said, the the the uh the new rivalries are about the payrolls, and they gotta, you know, like you know, a lot of times these first three weeks, you know, Big Daddy's excited about a couple of good games. Usually it's roll tide versus cupcake city, and and and you don't get anything going until conferences. But I think they do need to make one division, the payroll division, and go back to to uh legions on other sports.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, well what one other one other the you know, everybody's been talking about LSU. Well, they got a rough one at home. Texas AM comes in there to play them. That's gonna be an interesting game, too. Everybody's gonna want to see how Lane Kiffin bounces back.
SPEAKER_03I'm sure old Blazyville is pretty good about getting the better of him.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03100%.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_03Well, I think we should wrap up the show. What's going on in the first match? Patrick, what's going on in the first match in Laver Cup? How are we doing?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's what I was that's what I was scrolling here on my computer because I got to do some after the first match. It's three all in the first set with Sarundalo and your guy, Caspar Rude. So both those guys, as you would say, be looking for the fear hand.
SPEAKER_04He likes that little scrapper.
SPEAKER_03He's gonna push all the right buttons. They don't have nearly as good of a team as they did last year on paper. Europe is gonna be a lot better, but Andre's gonna push the right buttons, and it's a great format that on day one you can figure out is this guy worthy of playing him on day three or or if he gets tight, and uh that you get you know to submit your lineup, and then you can kind of, you know, if you're the second team, which Europe, you can put you know, match it up on days one and three. I I love the system. I think it's a great format, but I think Andre will push all the right buttons, and I think they're gonna win again.
SPEAKER_05Okay, well, Brad, Brad, Brad would know because Brad, everyone. For everyone out there that does isn't aware, used to coach Andre Agassi and helped him in that second part of his career, which was by far his best part. Um, and if if if you could coach one young male player right now, BG, one young male from anywhere on the planet, doesn't have to be American, who do you who who do you think has the most upside and could benefit from the BG brain power?
SPEAKER_03Uh I mean this is a good question. Obviously, you think about it a lot. Um I mean, and first of all, you you have to be honest with yourself if you're taking somebody, because if I coach somebody like me, Patrick, I want to feel like they have the ability to maybe compete to win slams. And I think sometimes you you know, coaches think, you know, okay, you're you're not a magician. You you need the player to have a lot of talent to be able to compete at this level. Um it would be sure as heck fun to be coaching Sinner or Alcaraz. Um I mean, I probably think that Odar, you know, O'Dar, yeah, you know, he's probably got some potential considering his dad is a PE coach. He's not even a tennis guy, and he's taken him from like 800 to 11 in the world. Maybe uh uh JCF is gonna start coaching him. I think Fun uh Fonseca right now is is underperforming. I think those two guys probably jump out. And I I mean, kudos to to Brian Shelton. I think he's done a great job with his son. Um so I do think that there is a big separation, honestly, between Sinner and Alcaraz and then three down. I think that might not be it, it might, and Zverev is taking advantage, but a healthy Sinner and Alcaraz right now is like roll tide versus you know, you know, their early schedule in the season when they love to play Savannah State and Jacksonville State. You know, there's a big separation right now if those two are healthy. I mean, Patrick, you think anybody is close to them if those two are healthy?
SPEAKER_05I think Zrerev is closer now than ever before. I think he could, I don't, you know, we asked Jeannie Bouchard if there was a new big three a couple weeks ago, and she said yes. I disagreed and said no, there's no big three. You know, Zrerev, but but but to your question, I think if he goes head to head against them now, like there's a belief factor that's there. I'm not saying he's gonna beat him, but he definitely like you as you saw it in the Australian Open, was it two years ago when he he just didn't when he played center in the final? He looked like he had absolutely no shot, like in his mind, even though a couple sets were close. Um, so I think that he's got a shot. I I think the two guys you mentioned are are are are the two guys I would pick. But if I had to pick one American guy, or um, let me ask you, if you had to pick one American guy, who would that be?
SPEAKER_03Shelton. No question about it. Because of his athleticism, his size, lefty, age. Um but obviously, you know, he's never beaten. I mean, one time he beat Center, the first time he's lost like 25 sets in a row, and you know, hasn't beaten Zvara. Um but I think he's gotten better each year. Um, I think his dad's done a great job, but I think, you know, he has the most hope of the Americans because I think he's the best athlete. Um got the biggest weapon.
SPEAKER_05All right, Big Daddy, before I let you go, I gotta hear your take on my jets and your giants as we look ahead. Both both teams at one and one. Give me your take on the uh chances of either of them being two and one when I'm done here at the labor cup.
SPEAKER_07I think they, you know, the giants have to rebound, obviously. Well, both teams, you know, that that jet loss was crushing because they had them. And uh but uh if I was gonna say uh I think your jets are gonna be fine, they will uh be two and one when you come back. I really do believe that, uh even though they're gonna have their hands. What's that? You got them winning in Detroit? Yes, I do. I really do. I really do, and I'm not doing that because I'm drunk. Uh I didn't have uh those phones. I have uh coffee, and uh that is my take there. As far as the Giants, okay, as far as the Giants, they um as long as Jameis snaps out of it, I think they'll be fine. I think that's the issue there because the other night he went in there obviously cold and you know, I I don't want to use the word scared, but he kind of played a little scared because there were some people that were open. I'm not saying it would have changed the outcome by that much, but I think they'll have a better chance uh against uh Tennessee this weekend. So I I think both teams, as much as everyone may think I'm crazy, they will both be two and one come Monday.
SPEAKER_05All right, well, um thinking yeah, that is with Lauren. What about your ducks? You think they're gonna get it done in in uh LA against SC?
SPEAKER_04I think they have to. I don't I don't necessarily feel confident, but they have to. So we'll find out who what kind of coach Dan Lanning is this weekend, to be honest.
SPEAKER_07Hey, hey, I gotta I gotta add one other game to the mix. You guys are gonna laugh at me, but this is a big, big game out here in Long Island. Massapua is playing Garden City. Ready? But let me explain. Ready? Here's the deal. Please do. Garden City is on a 56-game winning streak, and Toledo. Yes, Massapiqua like De LaSalle back in the day, Brad. Yes, yeah, Massapiqua is on like a 26-game winning streak, but the difference is Massapiqua is in conference one, guarded city is in conference three. So normally you would not get this game to happen, but everyone wants to see who the real Titan is of high school football. So they took this game, they put it on the map, and it's being played at Hofstra University. Uh not out of high school, not out of high school at the university, and that place is gonna be a zoo and it's gonna be packed. Mac Daddy will be there represented by me. I'm actually going with, believe it or not, I know some I know you guys know him, is Billy Baldwin. You know, he's got uh yeah, he's you know, he's a Massapua guy. So uh he him and I were on the phone. He goes, Hey, I'm gonna go to that game. Are you coming? And I said, Yeah, I'm gonna be there. Um, you know, being in Nassau County, my uh my ties there, and being a guy that played football. So that's a big game that you know obviously the rest of America doesn't know about, but here locally, it is a big, big game.
SPEAKER_05I don't know who Brad, you never know what you're gonna get here. This is this is the beauty of Mac Daddy. I mean, you never know what we're gonna come up with on this show. That's why we love it. And by the way, I want to let you know, Brad, Lauren and I, and maybe Big Daddy. I don't know if he's gonna be able to make it with his schedule, but we're we're plotting a trip to the West Coast. We got a big new sponsor that we're we're chasing, and we're gonna chase it down, okay? And we're gonna head down, we're gonna head up to Vancouver, then we're gonna come down, we're gonna stop in Oregon, see a little or a little ducks football, which I've never been there, so I'm super.
SPEAKER_07Oh, I want I'm not listening to that trip. I'm not listening to that. Then we're gonna head down to LGBT.
SPEAKER_05We're gonna bring we're gonna bring some dos hombres for BG to his place in Malibu, and we're gonna sit out there with get get out there with the dogs, with Brad's dogs. He's the big dog guy, have a little tequila, and maybe we maybe we bring BG to a game in LA too.
SPEAKER_03Hey, listen, if you get every day, you get some Sheila. I got the coffee with espresso, you get a little beers in tequila, you get some games, talk sports, life is pretty good. Stay away from the politics.
SPEAKER_07We need to get, listen, let's get ready then. Get Brad's address so we can get some Doz Ombras shipped. Ship for Dos Ombres. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Great. And then I'm shocked I'm saying this, you know, because I I had no hope, you know, because we always say with the Raiders, maybe, you know, can't be worse than last year. I think we could be 3-0. Who knows? I mean, then the schedule gets tough, but I think we go into New Orleans, get the W 3-0, world like, and over there, Patrick, the team world, Andre will get the upset as well. Trio Raiders. I can't believe I'm saying that.
SPEAKER_04Well, good luck, John, Miss T-Mac.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, the other thing we need to do, Lauren, is we need to go to Vegas to a game, a Raider game. So that we need to and have Brad meet us there. That would be next level. I got my volition shirt, uh boast uh that I'm wearing. I took off my TV stuff specifically for our friends at volition because they're our presenting sponsor. We want to thank Dosombres. You heard enough about them as well. We want to thank the fire department coffee, the Sheila, as BG rightly points out. BG, we so appreciate you doing this again. Have a wonderful day.
SPEAKER_06Thanks, Brad.
SPEAKER_05You too. BG in Oklahoma City saying goodbye, signing off. He's doing his thing. I will put back on my shirt, my jacket, and get ready for a little labor cup in between matches, and then I'll be calling the doubles match tonight, guys. Lauren, you'll get a kick out of this. Calling the doubles match tonight. You can see it on tennis channel. Um, Alcaraz is playing doubles with Mensick against Taylor Fritz and Bublik, and Bublick representing world. Why? Because Kazakhstan uh considered part of Asia, right? A lot of people think, you know, actually part of it's Europe, part of it, but but he's playing representing Team World. So he's playing first time ever for the Labor Cup team representing Kazakhstan.
SPEAKER_07Hey, I gotta tell you something. I got I heard a great story. It involves your brother, John. Can we tell it on the on the show or off the air? Uh I'll tell you off the air, but uh though I didn't know your brother had a house in uh your brother had a house in Malibu. He still does. Yeah, he's still got a place there. Yeah. Oh, does he? Okay, I didn't know. So I just uh it was funny because uh it was brought up on Monday night that uh uh on Tuesday when I was with the uh guys that back in the day Johnny Carson would come to your brother's house for lessons, and I was so intrigued.
SPEAKER_05But he bought Johnny Carson's house. My brother bought Johnny Carson's house, and part of the deal, you know, Johnny gave him a little bit of a deal, uh, not a great, you know, but was that my brother would give him lessons. So then my brother's had a couple different places. Uh now he's a little further north. He's actually fairly close to where Brad lives. Um, but so yeah, he spends a lot of time out there. I am going to be doing a little QA with him here at the Labor Cup. He's here as well. Uh, unbelievable uh Labor Cup gala last night where I interviewed the great Roger Feder, and um Seal was the performance, and he just knocked it out of the park at the full BAM. So this thing is happening here. I'm having a lot of fun, uh, not as much stress because I'm not in the vice captain's chair, you know, with my brother, you know, going match in, match out. So I'm just enjoying myself, uh, having a good time. I appreciate both of you doing this. I know we all got to get on to the rest of our lives today, but Lauren, awesome job jumping in. It's my freaking I thought I'd fix my computer. So I apologize to Andrew because I I I emptied all this crap out of my computer, but I still got an issue going on. Big Daddy, you be good, brother. Save some of that reposado for me. We are Mac Daddy, and we are signing off on this Friday. Have a great weekend, everyone. J E T S Jets, Jets, Jets.
SPEAKER_00Volition America is an authentic, disruptive brand of clothing that ultimately gives back. So every time the consumer makes a choice to buy Volition America, they're changing their lives. But they're also changing the life of a military or first responder family benefiting folds of honor. And that is a combination that, quite frankly, does not exist in the world.
SPEAKER_01Metzcal reminds me of a certain kind of personal comfort without trying too hard. Interesting. Maybe a little dangerous, you know, effortlessly charismatic. Not everyone has that. Some people build it over time, others just born with it. I wouldn't know anything about that, of course. Go zombrace. Strip away the noise.
SPEAKER_02For less than one dollar per serving, one packet of fire department coffees, instant coffees, and a shaker bottle. It's all you need to make a great tasting, delicious coffee that'll give you the experience of actually keeping your hard earned cash in your pocket and giving you the energy that you need to make it through your day.
