We're Tim and Nick, Hosts of the Fathers and Founders Podcast.
This pilot is twenty minutes on who we are, why we started this podcast, and what we actually believe in.
It began as a regular call between us that turned into something worth recording. Fatherhood, business, mates, being a good man. That's what this show is about.
Have a listen and you'll get it.
Better dads, Better men. Better mates. Better Aussies.
One little thing that happened outside of your control changed your whole trajectory of life, of business, career. Which was a duck bad. My primary role in life at the moment is to be a better man and a better dad and a role model for my children. I've exited two companies. We currently run five businesses here under the Quantum Group. I was a soldier, you know? And then now I'm doing this. It's just like so different. We're still far from where we plan to be. Fuck, we have done good to get where we are. Let's fucking go, brother. Pilot.
SPEAKER_00Welcome. Welcome, mate. First episode or the pilot.
SPEAKER_01First pilot. The uh the overview, mate. The intro, I guess you'd call it.
SPEAKER_00That's right. It's exciting. What we're gonna go through is very simply who we are, why we're here, and what for. And then what else are we gonna go through? What was it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like what brought us to start this podcast and everything in between. Like, there's obviously there was a fire burning within both of us that we had during our discussions, during our catch-ups, and we thought that man, we should be sharing this with other people. Like, I've had experiences and stories that other people have been through similar to this. I'm talking to this person about that. And you and I were sort of having these conversations on a weekly basis, and we thought, let's just let's send it out there to the world, man. Let's put it out there to the universe.
SPEAKER_00Well, we want relatability. I think you and me, we had, like you said, what was it, bi-weekly Friday catch-ups about business, and then eventuated into just how the how we how we were.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then we just thought, wait, there's so many males in Australia right now and females, but but people in our position that would love to have not only a close friend but a community, or people who are thinking the same, understanding the same pressures, going through the same sort of um ups and downs in life, and could potentially just relate and benefit from anything that we're saying. And we're on a journey ourselves, and we've had we've achieved a level of success so far, and we're now trying to continue that journey, and we want to be better every day, one percent better every day. Cliche is how, but that's 100% the truth. It works, yeah. And if people can listen in and think, okay, there's more like other people doing this or going through it or can be done or whatever stage you're at, and you get some value from us giving some sort of experience story or even just having a freaking laugh, then we are successful in this podcast.
SPEAKER_01100%. Like that's it. As you mentioned, we're caught up, we caught up two weeks every two weeks, nearly two years. Has it been that long? Yeah. Fuck. Uh November will be two years, so that's like yeah, pretty close.
SPEAKER_00That's outside like obviously um our professional relationship prior to that as well. Completely when did we start actually everything?
SPEAKER_01Probably like maybe a year or so before that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Shit.
SPEAKER_01So anyway, it's it's awesome that we it it was such natural progression. Like I identified, I think I proposed to you, bro. I was like, mate, let's let's be accountability partners.
SPEAKER_00That's not what you said. No, uh, you did, you did. You said like oh let's catch up every whatever. Yeah, because I think when you have like-minded dudes, particularly, you just click straight away. Yep, and you and me um were at a certain point in our lives where we held our um principles and values confidently within ourselves. So when we like matched, like connected, sounds like we fucking matched on Tinder or binge or something. Yeah, which it was Tinder, yeah. Um not a sponsor. And we we uh we actually like we just like connected, like, okay, well, this dude has his principles and he's confident and he knows what he's doing, and vice versa. So we just connected and thought, mate, let's go.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. So here we are, mate. We've launched the Fathers and Founders podcast. We uh pilot episode, I guess we just want to give our listeners an overview of who we are, why we're doing it, and and what we're up to. So without any further ado, Timmy Brown, not just a father and a founder, just an all-round good bloke. Mate, give us a give us your wrap sheet, give us a rundown on on your life, what's where what you've achieved to date, and you know, why you're here.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Nick. I suppose just to start off, like I am this is unfiltered, this is raw, this is just unscripted, um, sit down. What we're trying to essentially do is capture our um you know candid conversations that we had into a podcast form.
SPEAKER_01So just as a capital We were wishing that our that our Zoom calls were recorded.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes, sometimes no. I'm sure someone's listening. Yeah, with these days, yeah. But um, no, this is this is gonna be that. So when I now answer your question, it's just straight off out of my head, off the cuff, right? So so the question was like, what am I about? Who am I, right? Yep. So I'm a father of three um with a loving wife, currently living in Melbourne, relocating back to Adelaide. Previously had a career in the military and Australian border force, and and now I own and run the Charleston Group or otherwise known as TCG buys agency, where we help everyday Aussies who are feeling the pinch to want to break free of that system by high-performing investment properties. Yeah, and that's what I do day-to-day. So my my primary role in life at the moment is to be a better man and a better dad and a role model for my children, subsidiary to that, or in conjunction with that is running and building a successful business to economically provide the time and experiences that I want to have with my children and the closest people around me. Yeah, that's that's my that's my mission, sort of summed up. And make podcasts with the boys, and make podcasts with the boys about it, about about the the highs and lows. Because look, I run a um Instagram as well, as you know, and I've got a now a nice following as well, just because when I first started putting just raw, sort of minimally edited sort of content out there about like investing and whatever it is, and that's obviously resonated with a lot of people, particularly out of the investment space, which was very polished and sometimes wanky and cringe. Um, and we want to continue that. So that's why um I think sharing our journey is going to be really good. I've lost my train of thought there, but essentially, yeah, that's who I am, that's what we're doing. That's why I'm sitting in this seat. And Nick, I want to just keep it short. I want to go straight back to you. Mate. Same question.
SPEAKER_01I think the reason I like your story is because it's so similar to mine. And like every time we catch up, we have dinner, we talk, we get in the trenches, we're like, oh my gosh, like I had that experience at similar age. And that's, I think, why we do gel and resonate so well. So much like Timmy, I'm a father of three children, loving husband. I have, you know, had definitely been on the business roller coaster. I've exited two companies. We currently run five businesses here under the quantum group. Uh, we've got so quantum, which is a buyer's advocacy, and I think that's an important thing to know. Like, Tim and I both run buyers' advocacies in different states. Um, I wouldn't say we're competitors, but like we're we're definitely got like the same target demographic. So it's awesome that you know we can come together, have these conversations, and you know, we've we know all of each other's systems and processes. We call each other up, have these discussions about um, you know, this sort of stuff, which is which is how it should be. So, but off track, back on me. Um, yeah, run a few different businesses here. We've certainly, like I said, been on the roller coaster of business. We've had some really high highs and we've had some really low lows. Uh we've lost houses and we've been, you know, our experience in business has given us the ability to talk and discuss about um all the good things that can come from running a business. And we're also on like the forefront of of life, man, like fatherhood, trying to be the best dads we can, trying to be the best husbands we can, trying to provide. Like we've got a team of 10 here uh in our office. You you've you've got a large team yourself, so like you know, we we need to provide it's not just providing for those people, we're providing for their families as well. And it there's just so much pressure every day here that um that we you know experience, so we just want to share the good the great times and and the um you know the tough times too. So 100%.
SPEAKER_00I think um, yeah, just not to flog a dead horse, but like we're really trying to relate to the everyday Aussie out there that's live really feeling the pinch. Like economically shit's going on right now, right? People are feeling it always is. There always is, but I just feel like there's such a crack in society, like such a divide that have, have, nots, and is is like it's quite toxic out there at the moment. We just want to we want to try and cut through with hey, we're everyday people trying to play a game in a system that is what you could say working against us, and we don't want to be doom and gloom, but I suppose we want to highlight all that shit and then say, what are we doing, how we done it, and how we're continuing to do it, and also then wrap it up to some sort of positive spin. So we if during this podcast, we may talk about doom and gloomy shit. We'll probably dive into like our personal past of whether it's like that's right, our journeys, um the experience, yeah, with all sorts of stuff, and we can go deep into another time. There's so much we can talk about, but you want to touch on all those topics, but then at the end of the day, we want to be able to be like, okay, well, this is this is the lessons learned. I think that is such a key thing about being a better bloke or being a better human in general, is that okay, whatever happens, whatever you've gone through, like what's the takeaway, what's the lesson, what's like what's the next step? How can you be relentlessly solution focused? Like, and I know, yeah, fuck, oh, it's yeah, it can be cringy and stuff, but it's really, really true. And it might be hard to get through at the time you're in the storm, but how do we take lessons and keep being better? And and that's in all strokes of life fitness, health, dad, business, you know, whatever it is. Yeah. Um, and if we can like we're gonna touch on it, we're gonna touch it. We're gonna go through it. In fact, with this episode or this pilot, we're gonna go through a bit of a what would you say, like a highlight of you know, different sort of key topics that we'll touch on as a very limited list, like unlimited beyond that.
SPEAKER_01But essentially we're gonna go through uh a number of different things, but I think the the the the biggest thing that we're talking about at the moment, I think it's most uh, you know, we're just off the back of the federal budget and we're sort of starting to see the repercussions of that come into play. Obviously, being in a property-based business, both of us, plus having property portfolios, you know, like one would think that we're at the forefront of the destruction of what's meant to be, you know, a demising property industry, which in actual fact it's we're sort of having the opposite effect. However, the back end of that, we're seeing uh, you know, the CGT laws changing. A lot of people now are leaving Australia and we're not. So our first episode's gonna be why we're betting on Australia. Like what's what's holding us here? Um and the things that we're doing to make this a better place. Not enough people standing talking about it. Like I follow a handful of people on on social media who get out there and actually are bold enough to post themselves to say, this is bullshit. We're making a stand against this and that, and then there's other people who are jumping shit, which we again we're not blaming people for leaving the country. We're not saying it's the wrong thing to do. You've got to do the right thing for your family at the time. But you know, that's that's something that I think is really relevant right now, and I'm sure that you know we've definitely thought about it. Uh, but you know, a lot of people out there too are thinking about that as well. So topics like why we're still building on Australia, um, building while you're still building, like, you know, you in the trenches, building your business, building your empire, building a legacy for you and your family, your mates, whatever it might be, the people who you employ, but also being able to like stand on your throne and and you know, in look back at the journey you've you've done and and what you've achieved and being able to keep build while you're building. So that's gonna be another episode for us.
SPEAKER_00Business building, yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_01And life, you know, gym, you know, mindset, you know, building relationships, everything. Um, the pressure no one talks about in business and in life, you know, again, tucking this isn't a mental health podcast, but it certainly is just about like it's about what fathers and founders feel from a day-to-day basis and and what that looks like. Just had the pressure of trying to pick up my wife's birthday present, mate.
SPEAKER_00Like I think this has got the recording date, mate. Let's just set it back a few weeks, pretend like you're really organized. That's right. What do you mean? It's organized to me. So anyway, it's the third of May at the moment.
SPEAKER_01Ordinary blokes can leave uh lead extraordinary lives. That's like another topic, like you know, imposter syndrome and like why you know, you see, you hear, you feel people like fuck, I wish I could be doing that. But actually, those guys are just normal blokes like you and I as well. So just actually starting stuff and and doing that. Um, what success actually feels like, you know, raising our children, being good dads, being good husbands, like you know, creating safe environments for our family and our wives and stuff like that. Why the Australian dream's changing, like how generationally it's changed so much. Um, you know, lessons from from our businesses that we've learned, um, why we still love small business, like while we're battling on in the small business space and why we love doing what we're doing. Um, yeah, like what we would do if we'd change everything tomorrow. Another lesson from our life of or our experience in business to date. Um, and yeah, loneliness of leadership, family before fortune. There's tons of different things that we're gonna cover there.
SPEAKER_00There's so much. I think in the even family before fortune, it's it's a really good measure. Like, because are people gonna be thinking, okay, we're just dudes on a mission and it's all economically focused? Like, that's what everyone thinks is success. It's the nice car, it's the watches, all that sort of stuff. Yeah, we love that shit as well. Because not because of keeping up with the Jones, like can give a fuck what anyone thinks about me. I don't know, you're the same. It's about like what do I enjoy? But um, you know, leading the family and what is your return on investment, not economically, but just like time with family experiences, having the things that you want, um health, like longevity, all those types of things is what we consider success. And it's I think a lot of entrepreneurs these days are breaking out of that economic success only. Yeah, so we're trying to highlight that too and sort of spread across the board because it's it's a juggling act for sure.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, and it's a roadmap over what we've done to get like we're we're still far from where we plan to be. Fuck yeah, but fuck we have done good to get where we are. Like 100%. Like you and me are constantly fucking high-fiving each other voice message. We're like, dude, guess what? Just did this. Like, yeah, and it's the roadmaps, the the rituals, the discipline that we do that we're sharing that other people might go, fuck, you know what? I need I've been mean to start doing that. This is your message to start doing that. If you're hearing this, you need to start today. So that's it's all of what we've done to get hit.
SPEAKER_00I think we're in a sixth spot because it's like we've we've already had a like a measurable uh uh amount of success, but we're not so successful that we're out of touch.
SPEAKER_01Correct.
SPEAKER_00So we're still so like we're on the like you said, we're on the front line of relevancy in terms of all of these topics. Yeah. And we're sort of at that age, like what are we like low 30s, right? Some would say mid. Some would say mid. Like one one year either side of mid-30s is like you always round down, I'm pretty sure with age. So we're like low 30s, super low 30s. So we're like, we're in that sort of spot where transitioning into that older generation of like um having the businesses with employees or whatever it is, and we're just getting to that like material success as well. So it's it's in that sweet spot, I think. And I know that a lot of my peers and all the younger generation who are feeling particularly disfranchised with what's going on at the moment can at least connect with some like relevancy.
SPEAKER_01And zoom the fuck out because it wasn't that long ago, like like we'll go through all of this that that stuff, but we'll also talk about the like all of our success. But it was only six years ago when like I literally had nothing, like lost my house to some you know, business failures, and it will we'll explain that as well. Like we've earned the right to sit where we sit from the experience and the path that we've paved. So you know, sharing all of that and that you know gives you the ability to zoom out and gives you that, you know, this is just a small blip in our whole timeline of business and life and how thick quick things can change and and everything that comes from that too. So we're gonna be touching a lot on that. We're gonna be drawing on a lot of our experiences, we're gonna be um you're gonna learn a lot about us as as people, but the with the intention to inspire, you know, we want people to be able to feel as though they can reach out to us and talk to us about this sort of stuff and and have these conversations. So we're gonna get into yeah, the best investments we've ever made, the things that we've gotten wrong, how to stay positive when the news isn't, or you know, which is which is very relevant to today, and you know, what what the current economic state and and probably just uh consumer sentiment within Australia is, uh, and what we do to to keep ourselves on track. Um and we're gonna be leveraging a lot of you guys as well. So if you have got experiences, drop them in the comments. Like we'd love to hear from people who do listen to this and and want to leverage from that as well. Uh, what makes a good bloke matter? I think that's a uh another exciting one we're gonna run through. What we're teaching our kids about money, um building businesses without losing yourself in the music at the moment.
SPEAKER_00That's a good idea, song.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we should we should maybe should start filming and making music.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna start rapping.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I want to say that um because that's again like man, we can talk about that right now for so long, but you will wait till uh till that episode comes out. The life we're actually trying to build, not this bullshit work till you're 65, fucking retire and then die a year later. We wanna fuck that. It's it's building your life today that you want to live and being bold enough to make decisions like dude, your story about how you even got into buyers advocacy. I hadn't heard the in-depth version of that until last night. I'll go even deeper on it too, I'll tell you. Yeah, and like even that was enough to me for me to be like, fuck, like one little thing that happened outside of your control changed your whole trajectory of life, of business, career.
SPEAKER_00Not just a small like deviation, like a complete everything. It was a 180. Yeah, and which was a dark, like a bad time.
SPEAKER_01Completely, but the best thing ever happened. Yeah, and so there's always a fucking light and how to stay positive when when news isn't that good, like building a business when you're losing your world, like we you the house was burning down, man, and you were you were building, so you know it was an angry time.
SPEAKER_00I was a fucking angry, yeah. We'll talk about it. We'll get there.
SPEAKER_01Um, if we if we can do it, so can you. That's a big thing. We are not fucking special blokes, we are just regular motherfuckers out here just doing like we grind grinding every day. We're at the fucking gym early this morning, the two of us. Like, if we can fucking do it, anyone can do it.
SPEAKER_00Like, honestly, that is it's such a cliche line, but it's so fucking true because I'm like, yeah, it's it's beyond. I I never would, and we'll talk about our stories. I never would, I still convince myself where I am. Yeah. Do you know what I mean? Because it's like I still have doubts. You still you still like they creep in every now and again, it's not there. You learn, you like you learn a different mindset. But it's like if like I was just I was a soldier, you know, and then now I'm doing this, it's just like so different. Like, if you can if I can do it, you fucking can. Dude, you can it like I still don't know my time stables and like I'm I'm a shocker with that sort of stuff. Can't spell like yeah, but now I can, you know.
SPEAKER_01It's all these pressures that we all have, and like it's it's mate, my our mindset coach says nothing's permanent, nothing lasts forever. Like, so if you think like that you're gonna be doing this forever, you'll be whipping a dead horse doing whatever you're doing for as long as you feel like you didn't necessarily do it. But if you stay fluid and open to opportunity, surrender, then that's what's gonna be right for you. I guess the summary of this, guys, is this is just a weekly conversation for Australians who want to live a better life, and that's what we're here to do. Like, we feel as though amidst the chaos, we are fucking happy and we are living a good life. And the conversations we're having with the people we know, there's there's a a difference that we can make by just talking about it. And it's this is a conversation to start.
SPEAKER_00This is it, and like through that through the episodes, we're gonna be like we what the content can be serious, and we'll dive into some dark stuff, some some whatever it is, but we like to have fun too. We like to talk shit and we'll have some laughs, like there'll be a whole range of stuff.
SPEAKER_01So we're literally just saying how it doesn't feel like we've grown up since we're 18.
SPEAKER_00Well, and I like that, bro. Me too. I fucking like that. So yeah, that's um there's gonna be fun with it all as well. So it's gonna be pretty lighthearted. We'll say some stupid stuff like as well, like we'll we'll have some fun with it. But um, yeah, we're excited. Fucking excited, and we swear. So if you don't like swearing, fuck off. No, you stay and listen so you can get a colour somewhere because you need to learn.
SPEAKER_01I like it. Awesome, brother. All right, mate. See you in episode one. Let's go.
