Hello and welcome to another edition of the Buffalo Roundup, your podcast home for all things VHS athletics by the Buffalo for the Buffalo. Drew Shaultry and Cody Hills with you as always after a somewhat accidental hiatus. We were supposed to be offered the Thanksgiving break last week. We unfortunately kind of ran out of time the week prior. We were trying to schedule around some things, pushing uh just based on having the SSAA state championship series here the week before Thanksgiving, and just kind of ran out of time in the day.
SPEAKER_01We we managed it better this week with the FHSA state rules uh rural state championship. So we we were better with time and we learned our lesson.
SPEAKER_00We learned. And that's all you can do. You learn and grow. And that's what we've done. So we're a little bit late in the day here on Wednesday coming to you as you can see, sun going down behind us already in Middleton. But we are going to give you the update on what's been going on with the start of the winter season and also break down the end of the fall season as we are officially turning the page on Fall Sports for 2025.
SPEAKER_01And hey, as a reminder, as you wait for each new edition of the Buffalo Roundup, you can find all you need to know about the Villages High School Sports at any time on our athletics website. We've got a digital home just for you, complete with scores, schedules, rosters, and other information, such as ticketing and live stream broadcasts right at your fingertips. Be sure to check us out online today at athletics.tvcs.org.
SPEAKER_00Alright, so jumping right into winter sports because we are now fully into the winter season. The only sport that as of this recording hasn't competed yet, I believe, is wrestling. Yep. But weightlifting, both basketball teams and both soccer teams are well underway with their seasons now. Competitive cheer is off and running. So uh jumping right into it. We'll go to boys basketball first, coming off of the home opener last night, Tuesday night here uh at the Villages High School. Looked outstanding against Pine Ridge, 30-point win there, and a three-and-one start to the season.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think overall really encouraging start. You mentioned I think it was 92 to 60 last night over Pine Ridge. Got a lot of different guys involved in the scoring. I think eight guys finished with seven points or more. Uh it's good to see Kamani Weathers get back on the court and make an impact after a season ending injury. Never even got a season off the ground a year ago with a knee injury in the offseason. So for him to play meaningful minutes, purposeful minutes uh in the regular season was great to see. Um they're fun, right? I think you and I mentioned on the broadcast it's an entertaining brand of basketball. You know, they are athletic, they are um not the biggest team in the world, I think, overall, but they have good height across the starting five, even deeper into the bench as well. I think the bench is deeper this year, just in terms of talent. Um, I think you feel, you know, a coach would love to say, yeah, I'll roll eight, nine, ten, eleven guys deep. But you you always see sort of in the postseason that that shrinks, right? Six, seven guys. I think Colt McDowell feels really good about nine, ten, eleven of these guys, even further down if need be. Um the the newcomers have been really good. Miles Simpson was absolutely terrific last night. Um Zayd Garcia in his uh spare minutes uh that he got on the floor. It just wasn't his night to get a lot of action. He's really good. Cam Lee, we saw in the preseason, really good at that point guard position. Of course, the heavy hitters were good. Hurley Brutus, Joe Mar Bernard, Aaron Britt Jr., um, and Jared Thompson. I mean, Jared Thompson's such a good player, and be remiss to mention Ethan Beavis. I feel like I'm naming everybody, but that's sort of what it is. It's a team effort. They're playing really good team basketball, three and one start.
SPEAKER_00When you think about the rotation, we look at last year in pretty much any competitive, meaningful game, it was a six-man rotation. It was the starting five, and then Ethan Beavis off the bench. Well, Aiden Corbin is your lone starter graduating from last year. Ethan slots into that spot, and you think, okay, we got Miles Simpson coming in. He's definitely gonna get some play, right? A player who's number one in his class in the state of Missouri that transferred here uh in the in the offseason. But then beyond that, what's it look like? And I think that what we've seen early in the season and last night especially, is that you've got a 10-man rotation. You you've got eight to nine, certainly, that you can go to over the course of a game. Again, between Cam Lee, Kimani Weathers, who looked outstanding last night, if he plays like that, it might be hard in certain matchups for Cole McDowell to not start him. Sure. Um, just with how good he looked. Um and in certain matchups where you're gonna have some size and maybe need to pull Hurley Brutus away from the post a little bit more, or Jomar Bernard, as the case may be. Um I think we're gonna see some games where Kamani Weathers has some great matchups where you're really gonna want to utilize him. Uh, we saw last night just a huge size advantage with uh player um De La Rosa, second leading scorer for Pine Ridge, having to come off the floor, really their only post presence, and that huge mismatch, which Kimani took great advantage of. Um but that was it was something we didn't have last year, right? That team was excellent, um, but it didn't have this kind of depth. And so I think that there is um a lot more leeway for Coach McDowell to kind of play with the lineup, uh, whether it's the starting five, which I think is pretty solid and and very rarely, if ever, going to change, but also I think he can be a lot more comfortable in that rotation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that was his message to the team afterwards, too, is that on any given night, it might be your night, it might not be your night. And how are you gonna react to that? You know, he's talking individually to some guys in the locker room afterwards, but it it was to me, it was along the lines of look, tonight it was Miles Simpson's night. He got a little bit more uh minutes on the floor. It might be Zaydan Garcia, but you might have to go even deeper. Brady Hunt, Ashton Hunt off the bench, whoever you need a touch of physicality. You need Jay Kennedy and his leadership at a guard spot. I mean, there's all sorts of pieces. I think to your point, um Cole McDowell's got a lot of buttons to push, and that makes any coach very happy. But yeah, overall, I think they're playing really good basketball early on in the year. I think this unit is cohesive earlier this year than I think they were a year ago or even two years ago. You know, back-to-back, you know, uh three straight years in the final four for this program, a couple state runner-up finishes. But I think this group is a little further ahead than any of those previous three that made it down there to Lakeland. Um, and hey, we'll get to go to Jacksonville, hopefully, this year, not Lakeland. That's for another uh discussion, as you guys know.
SPEAKER_00But we don't have to do RP funding center content anymore.
SPEAKER_01Yes, thankfully. Um, but yeah, three and one. The mark is good, the record's good. I mean, the one that got away while we were gone, uh, IMG Academy down in Miami. IMG, I mean, that's a game that they led by six at the end of the third quarter, uh, led throughout that game, uh, and give I think it was a 13-0 run kind of early in that fourth quarter and doom themselves. Correctable things, though, and I and I hope that we'll start to see you know some of those lessons from that one pay off. But overall, I think you feel really good. And again, it's exciting, right? Entertaining brand of basketball. And I think you can hang your hat on not only being proud to watch that basketball and support that program, but also it's gonna be a winning program, I think, just because they play such an up-tempo, high-flying style.
SPEAKER_00Uh, girls' basketball also getting the season going. They're already seven games into the year. About over a quarter of the way done with the regular season schedule, and it feels like we just just started the winter sports calendar. All on the road, too. All on the road. They've not played a home game yet. We're gonna see them Thursday night for the first time at home since the preseason. So uh excited to watch them if you can make it out here Thursday night. Pretty good matchup in that one against Central Florida Christian Academy. Um four and three coming off a loss last night at Wildwood. But hey, again, another one where they were leading at the end of the third quarter uh by I believe seven, ended up losing by nine. So obviously Wildwood flipped the switch there and really flipped the game uh over the course of that fourth quarter. But that's the most competitive we've seen them against Wildwood in quite some time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that Wildwood program, as we know, is a perennial powerhouse.
SPEAKER_00Defending state champions in 1A, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I mean, they play a brand of basketball. We just talked about our boys' squad being athletic and high-flying. You know, it is miserable to play against the Wildwood girls basketball team.
SPEAKER_00They put you in they put you in a race every single game, up and down the floor. It is you're in a you're in a track meet essentially for 32 minutes.
SPEAKER_01And I think we talked about a previous episode about this girls' basketball team and and all the new faces that they have in some spots, especially the young guards. So I think the the Achilles heel of that type of team would be a team that would want to press you and is experienced in their press and know what they want to do and play at that tempo. So for the Buffalo and Marquis Porter's bunch to handle that for a good portion of that game, yeah, he'd like to finish off those 24 25th to 32nd minutes there in that game. But um, overall, I think it's uh early returns for them are really good. Um, again, there's a lot of youth, a couple middle schoolers getting significant minutes for that squad. Of course, Herva Brutus and 99 Arjanny Harris doing the load scoring-wise. But overall, I think, you know, talked about how many games they've played. Hopefully that experience pays off. They're getting a lot of it out of the way, a lot of heavy competition out of the way early. Schedule's gonna ease up a little bit as it goes on.
SPEAKER_00Hopefully, they build off of it here early. Yeah, looking forward to seeing them again here at home against Central Florida Christian Academy Thursday night. Uh, if you're watching this in time, come on down. It'll be a good one. Otherwise, we'll have it for you on TV CS Live. You can watch it there as well. Boys soccer, off to a little bit of a bumpy start, one and four. And we knew coming into this year that it was gonna be a little bit of a reset. Uh, huge graduating class going out. We talked already plenty about it. Eight starters from last year's team graduating, really young group coming in, and a lot of youth still behind them. Um, but this is, you know, we're back at the the front end of a cycle right now, it feels like, and uh it's been evident in the results so far.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think, and you'd know this better than I do, but uh, I think Anderson DeSilva has a certain system that he wants to play right. But I think one thing that's commendable about him as I've learned to watch his teams over the year, is he does a good job, I think, tweaking it at times, maybe trying to fit the personnel to the system at times. For whatever reason, this group, maybe it's the youth in the inexperience, taking a little bit longer to I think grasp onto it. We knew scoring and putting the ball in the net was going to be maybe a struggle because of how much they lost a year ago. I don't remember that stat we dug up, but you know, they had lost so much production.
SPEAKER_00Something like 47 of 56 goals scored or something like that from last year have all graduated.
SPEAKER_01So, so I mean they they lose a lot of scoring production, and for whatever reason, you know, tough loss, I think, last night against Forrest program that you know you you you'd hope you're able to compete with, just not quite there yet with this young group. Again, so I think similar to the girls basketball team we just talked about, there's a lot of young pieces. As you mentioned, this boys' soccer squad. Hopefully they build off some of these early lumps. Um, it's not fun, right? Especially for a guy like Anderson DeSilva and this coaching staff and some of those guys. You know, I think of um a Sebastian Florian, for example, guy who's been around this program, not used to taking so many lumps and having that win-loss record lopsided, particularly early in seasons. It'd be interesting to see how they handle that adversity and bounce back.
SPEAKER_00No, we'll have to see how things go. They're gonna play tonight against Mount Dor. We've got a soccer doubleheader. This is uh again Wednesday that we're recording this. Both of these teams are playing tonight. So by the time you get this, these records will have changed. Uh, but the girls are gonna play against Citrus over on the main field this evening. Uh looking forward to that one. They're three and three, looking to get to four and three back on the right side of 500 in that one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we talked about early in the year how are they gonna replace Keanu Burgos and her scoring. So Maya Khalil's done a really good job of that uh early and often here for this year. I think she's up to 10 maybe already this year. She's been fantastic. Yeah, so she's had uh quite a few tallies. Um primary ball handle, if you will, obviously the offense flowing through her quite a bit. I think Brian Rouse has done a good job moving her around the pitch as well and kind of changing the angle of attack for her. Um what's their mark? Three and three here early on in the season. Uh I think a winnable match here tonight against Citrus. Have a good opportunity to get on the positive side of 500. But they've been fun to watch too. I think, you know, some similarities too. Maybe didn't lose as much as that boys' squad did. But there's again some places, uh, excuse me, some pieces they're gonna have to step up, as we talked about. And early on, Samaya Khalil's been really impressive, being the key one to do that.
SPEAKER_00Well, so they're in a similar cycle to the boys, right? But I think they're one or two years ahead in that cycle. You had that big class go out two years ago, that group um with Gianna DiMaggio and Enna Rausch and that group, and it was again the same kind of thing. It was six or seven seniors, almost all of them starters, long time in the program. Uh they'd been playing since they were seventh, eighth, ninth grade on the varsity squad. And uh, so all of a sudden that group goes out and you're replacing them again. Super young last year, and the team's still young this year. You've got middle schoolers playing, but now you're starting to see your Violet D'Artys, uh, Samia Khalil, who who came to the villages high school last year as a freshman. Um, you know, she slots in and immediately makes an impact. And um that that group is ascendant right now, right? There's not a lot of the the key pieces are upperclassmen yet. And so you've still got room to grow, but you're seeing that potential start to fill out. So again, uh similar cycle, but I think just a step or maybe two ahead of where the boys are right now. So uh that'll be interesting to see. It's also I think we've gotten used to so much early season success. Uh Brian Roush, last year especially, so deliberately built the schedule, almost almost perfectly easiest to hardest. Yes. I mean, and so it was it was designed because they had such a new squad to kind of ramp up as the year went along, and they were maybe a little bit ahead of schedule with how young they were, and so they came in and immediately started winning big in some of those early games, um, against uh against the somewhat lesser competition. Sure. And um kind of set the expectations maybe a little bit too high because of how quickly they jumped out, and then we saw them fall off down the stretch. This year it's been much more mixed bag. Um, I think it's gonna be better for them overall to kind of take the mixed results early on, to see some of that competition early, expose some of the weaknesses a little bit earlier, give you more time to work on them, focus on them over the course of a season. Um, but I I mean I think they're in a good spot. They're obviously in a tough situation with Montverton, Lake Highland Prep in the district. Um but I mean, again, still just on a on a growing path on this cycle, and again, looking to get above 500 here tonight, and I think they're in a good spot uh to kind of close out the calendar year if they can do that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and Brian Roush, too, right? I mean, he's it feels like what is he's probably sixth, seventh, eighth year head coach now. I think he's been quite a while now.
SPEAKER_00So I want to say it's year four really for Brian. Yeah, well, it feels like he's been around forever, right? Because his daughter was in the program for five years, and then he was also coaching at Brave SC when it was the villages soccer club. Um, so I mean he's been around players at the villages and he's been around the programs, and his son, also Peyton, was on the boys' varsity team since he was an eighth grader and he was class of 2022. So he's been around the programs for so long. It does feel like he's been coaching here for almost a decade.
SPEAKER_01I guess that the narrative I was trying to carry through there was just that it feels like this girls' program over the last four or five years has gone through a little bit of this where you have maybe some experience, but then there's a big gap to then some really youthful players, right? Whether it be middle schoolers or in this case, it was middle schoolers who played a lot a year ago are now freshmen and then maybe even sophomores. Um, it feels like he's been through this before. So I think there's that knowledge is power, right? The history being the greatest teacher, all the cliches you want to throw at it. I think Brian Rouse is in a good position to at least know what he has on the cover here as they move forward.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And again, I think that they'll they'll be just fine. Again, back into the cycle. Both of these teams, by the way, I think we mentioned it on a previous episode, huge tryout numbers. Yep. Very robust junior varsity teams that are very, very young. But getting those players into the program, getting them training from the time that they're, you know, 11, 12 years old in your system, you know, hopefully encouraging a lot of them to play some club soccer in the offseason, continue to develop those skills. That's one thing that's really underrated, just how short the high school soccer is. You think about playing about 13, 14 games in the course of three months, and then you don't do if you don't play club, like you you with if you don't win your district or make regionals, you're playing 15, 16 soccer games in a year, and that's it. It does seem absurdly uh small. Um, so it's so there is something to kind of making it a year-round or at least a one offseason sport in terms of your development. That's something that they're pushing with the younger kids right now.
SPEAKER_01Just throw a couple quick shout outs here at the end of our winter sports segment. You mentioned the girls' weightlifting team. They actually have their senior night or senior day meet today against Windermere Prep here on Wednesday afternoon, and then the wrestling team you alluded to them not getting their season started, they'll begin Saturday with the TD Talbot duels here at 9 a.m. So you can make it out for that eight bucks and get a whole day of wrestling.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's a good one too. Uh a lot of really good teams can be at that TD Talbot. Always a very well-run event, very efficient. There will always be wrestling to watch uh throughout the day at that one. Uh also be sure to follow along with all of the action through our VHS Buffalo social media channels. Check our Facebook page listed as VHS Buffalo Athletics. Our X account can be found at Villages Buffalo, and we share photos, videos, and more on our Instagram at Villages Buffalo as well. And hey, we've got YouTube, which is almost certainly how you're watching us right now, and that's at Villages Buffalo there too. As always, we thank you for your support and your social following of VHS Athletics. All right, time to put the bow on the fall sports season. Last time we talked to you, there were only a few sports still going. Football, unfortunately, going out in the first round to Berkeley Prep, 35-28. Only the second loss of the year, but it came in in the biggest moment, obviously. It really kind of felt like whoever was going to score last was going to be the team. It was pretty much back and forth the entire way. Uh, and the Buccaneers end up getting the better end of that one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a game that um boy, you really well played both sides, right? Clean game. Now, you know, uh, in terms of penalties, turnovers for the most part. I mean, everything was pretty clean. 35-28 loss for the Buffalo. Just a few points that stick out to me. I mean, just how efficient both offenses were. Each team punted one time, yeah. Um, you know, and that was it. You know, and save for, you know, uh Berkeley prep scored touchdowns on all but one drive. The villages scored touchdowns on all but the end of the half drive, the one punt drive and the end of the game drive. I mean, you're scoring, scoring, scoring. And to your point, yeah, Coach Pettis told me after the game, look, it was going to come down to whoever had the ball left with quality time left. That was pretty much it. And the Buffalo got it back with 40 seconds left, 42 seconds, not enough time to, you know, continue the back and forth game there. But give credit to the Buccaneers. I mean, they were four for four on fourth downs. You know, Coach Pettis said, I can't remember a time that someone was four for four or a hundred percent with that many attempts of fourth downs in a game. Um, it's a tough way to go out for the Buffalo. I think we talked about it leading up to that game in our pregame show for it and the podcast. That's a really tough draw. We talked about maybe, you know, did they deserve the four seed? Eh. Uh, it doesn't really matter now to go back on that, but to get Berkeley Prep a five-seed, you know, a really good five-seed, that four-and-four record was deceiving. Don't we know it now? Uh, that was a really good football team, a physical football team. Um, that's a tough way to go out. And two losses, you get to one at the time, you can't have it. Uh, the other one coming to you know, your three-time defending state champion Coco, who, lo and behold, back in the state semifinals, they'll take on Cardinal Gibbons. So um, yeah, just a tough ending for those guys and and those uh what 18, 19 seniors that we had because it was such a a good ending. And I'll I'll be honest, I mean, it took a while for the guys in this building to get over it. You know, I don't know if they are yet, but yeah, just to talk about, I mean, the coaches didn't even meet for a few days after, they didn't discuss what they saw on film. You know, I would assume a couple of them probably didn't even open the film in that time because it was just such a gut punch. So overall, you'll look back on it and see, you know, what was it, nine and two is the overall record. You look back on it, you feel good about it, and there was a lot to be proud of, you know, and you don't want to take away anything there, but I had the ending sour for sure for those guys. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, the uh uh the other fall sports that wrapped up since we last talked to you, golf, which is in some ways the reason that we're two weeks late getting you a podcast. We had we had sort of rescheduled not just around SSAA, but the golf championships were Tuesday, Wednesday of the week before Thanksgiving. And so we had tried to push recording to Thursday so that Cody could go out to Mission Inn on Wednesday and watch the championships and Thursdays when we got swept up in SSAA. Um but exciting seasons for both the boys and girls team. We talked about all year long the success they were having. I think they'd be the first ones to tell you they didn't play their best golf on the on the day of the championship, but both of them finishing in the top 15 in the state, excellent seasons.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, both of them getting to that second day and getting to qualify and get to those state finals, uh, the girls finishing 13th, the boys 14th. I think the note I had here was the youth movement being excited for exciting for them, the top two finishers on the girls' side, a seventh grader, Kenzie Kasanich. I mean, a seventh grader being your top golfer at a state final is absolutely impressive. You know, and that's what the team with, you know, talent like Katie Allen, um, you know, who had been there years and years before other girls on that squad who had been back on that stage. So I think that's boasts really well going forward for Jimmy Marson, head coach. And over on the boys side as well, Rett Kirkland, you know, a freshman, um you know, picking up kind of where his brother left off. And and you know, it's a boy squad that had plenty of talent all year long. Of course, Braxton Williams, um, you know, recently signed to Southeastern uh University and Lakeland, had his signing ceremony uh two weeks ago before the break. Um, but that's a senior who'd been there and done it. Landon Howe, um, you know, Aidens Crockett, guys who had played really well all year and it ended up being the youngster, uh Kirkland be the top individual finisher, and of course, mentioned Kasanich on the girl side. So I think promising results for the future. You know, that's a couple of programs. I think we touched on the girls' soccer and Needing to play in the offseason and join part of that club scene. Golf, they do that. That's one thing I think has been really well. And not that the girl soccer doesn't do that. Obviously, some of the girls do, but I think there's been a really good continuance of the Buffalo golf programs, both on the boys and girls side, playing on the junior tours during the offseason. And both of those golfers, Kasanich and Kirkland, have done that. Hopefully they'll improve going forward.
SPEAKER_00And cross country wrapped up their season at well at the state meet in Tallahassee, 11th place overall for the boys. Pretty nice uh wrap-up to the season there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think so. And uh a bit of a senior swan song, if you will, for you know, five seniors for the boys actually finished up uh as the five scores for them, all five seniors, particularly though three finishing in the top 100. David Probola was 36th overall. Really good run for him, really good season for him. Picked up his first career victory in his last senior season here. Um, obviously set the school record a 1631.5 earlier in the year. Um just overall, uh, it's a guy who has battled injury the last year or so. You know, his father, JP Probola, you know, it's kind of a joke with me, you know, and the head coach that you know he didn't really like cross-country, you know, the last year or so because of how much you know he had to go through, how much adversity. So for him to finish with a really admirable performance is the way I'd like to say it. A really strong performance at States. Good to see for him. And then uh uh Robert Camaro, Rivero, 90th overall, Nate Burton 98th, so three in the top 100. A really strong season for that group to finish together. Uh again, the seniors going out that came in together, go out together, especially Nate Burton and David Purple. It's a I don't want to say a storybook ending because they would have liked to maybe finish a little bit better, uh, I'm sure. But overall, getting to do it and the and the friendships that they made and the memories they have, it's a good finish for those guys.
SPEAKER_00All right. Well, that's a nice bow to put on the fall season. Outstanding season all around, by the way. I know we said it several times, but from swimming to volleyball to cross country to football, um, it really did feel like a lot of teams had exceptional seasons this year across the board. Everybody in at least the regional level of playoffs, everybody with winning records, um, several, several outstanding individual performances all the way across the board. So um can't say enough about what our coaches and athletes did here this fall. Uh and it was a really, really enjoyable season. Hopefully, we'll keep that momentum going into the winter here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I didn't even think about it till you mentioned it, but yeah, you talk about football, state playoffs, volleyball in the regional, bowling, getting to the state uh tournament, golf in the state tournament, um, across the country.
SPEAKER_00State tournaments, swimming, having big numbers at regionals, and then sending you you know, in three events at the state meet. I mean, that's those are great years. Those are pretty much banner years for a lot of these programs. Yeah, so really good performances all the way around.
SPEAKER_01Again, coaching staff. I know they turn it around and put it on the athletes. The athletes turn around and put it on the coaches. It's a good thing, good synergy there at VHS.
SPEAKER_00Um, so again, really fun fall, and and we hope that all of those teams that we talked about at the top uh with the winter sports can can kind of keep that going here in the winter.
SPEAKER_01We gotta get out of here. The lights getting on my page.
SPEAKER_00We do. Yeah, I was gonna say we gotta go. We're losing light. We got soccer to prepare for, we got uh FHSAA state championships to prepare for. Uh if you're seeing this on Thursday, come on out, catch that girls basketball game here on Thursday evening. Also, if you're missing football already, uh we've got the uh FHSAA uh rural state championships and the FIT championships here um Thursday and Friday. The schedules for those are on FHSAA.com. And for any other information on VHS athletics, you can check out athletics.tvcs.org. And other than that, we got nothing to say to you till next week except for Go Buffalo.
