00:02:14.319 And that phrasing might not make much sense to us today, but back then, during both the time it was written and the time that John the Baptist says it, make straight the way was not a do some quick recap to help paint a picture of what all was going on in Israel during this time. 00:02:58.800 --> 00:03:02.240 If you remember, Israel was God's chosen people. 00:03:03.360 --> 00:03:07.680 As a nation, they experienced countless miracles and messengers from God. 00:03:08.719 --> 00:03:11.439 But time after time they turned their back on him. 00:03:12.879 --> 00:03:19.520 And eventually, as an act of discipline, God handed them over to Babylon, where they were exiled as captives. 00:03:20.080 --> 00:03:22.080 But God didn't forget about them. 00:03:22.400 --> 00:03:29.039 He had mercy and compassion on them, and after about 70 years, the Israelites returned to Jerusalem by the hand of God. 00:03:29.280 --> 00:03:35.280 They rebuilt the city, they rebuilt the temple, but they're a fraction of what they once were. 00:03:36.719 --> 00:03:44.000 The years go by, and once again Israel declines into sin, and finally God sends one last prophet, Malachi, to rebuke them. 00:03:44.479 --> 00:03:46.080 After that, silence. 00:03:47.759 --> 00:03:55.039 For over 400 years there were no new prophets, no new revelation, no new promises, just waiting. living under foreign rule, this time by Rome. 00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:22.480 They weren't exactly exiled, but they weren't free to do as they pleased either. 00:04:22.639 --> 00:04:24.639 They had Roman governors in place. 00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:29.439 Harold the Great ruled over Israel, but he got his authority from Rome. 00:04:30.240 --> 00:04:32.879 Some sought to cooperate with Rome. 00:04:33.120 --> 00:04:35.279 Others desired rebellion. 00:04:36.160 --> 00:04:40.959 And so it's safe to assume that the nation of Israel would have been a tense, maybe restless place. 00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:46.240 And then finally, rumors of a new prophet start circulating. 00:04:46.399 --> 00:04:52.079 And he comes proclaiming the words of Isaiah 40: Make straight the way of the Lord. 00:04:52.399 --> 00:04:54.319 A king was coming. 00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:57.199 The king was coming. 00:04:58.480 --> 00:05:01.759 And to the Romans, this might mean a rebellion. 00:05:02.720 --> 00:05:05.680 To Herod, probably a threat to his throne. 00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:08.399 To the corrupt, a cause for fear. 00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:13.839 To the masses, a solution to the Roman problem, and to the faithful, a long-awaited Savior. 00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:20.720 The people's reaction would largely hinge on the answers to the question: who is this coming king? 00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:23.439 And what does his arrival mean for me? 00:05:25.120 --> 00:05:28.319 And it begs the same question of us today. 00:05:28.959 --> 00:05:30.800 Do you know who he is? 00:05:31.279 --> 00:05:34.560 And do you know what his arrival means for you? 00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:45.439 Thankfully, the writer of John, John the Apostle, not John the Baptist, starts his account of the gospel by answering this exact question. 00:05:46.879 --> 00:05:52.639 If we look at verse 1, he starts with, In the beginning was the Word. 00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:56.959 And the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:09.040 And to any good Jewish listener who should have been immersed in Old Testament scriptures, even if they failed to grasp their meaning, these verses should carry some significant weight. 00:06:10.800 --> 00:06:18.639 To start, we have in the beginning, which intentionally should bring your mind back to Genesis chapter 1. 00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:22.879 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 00:06:23.519 --> 00:06:27.279 John is making a statement that goes all the way back to the beginning. 00:06:27.439 --> 00:06:33.360 Before God laid the foundations of the earth, before he separated the day from the night, there was the word. 00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:38.560 And the word was with God, and the word was God. 00:06:40.639 --> 00:06:46.399 And in the same way, even the use of the term the word carries some Old Testament weight. 00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:56.639 All throughout we see things like 1 Samuel chapter 3, where it says, For the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord. 00:06:57.439 --> 00:07:03.600 Psalm 107, he sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. 00:07:03.920 --> 00:07:11.600 Jeremiah 23, is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock into pieces? 00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:23.120 Or Isaiah 55, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth, it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. 00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:30.879 All throughout the Old Testament, God's word is his primary means of revelation and action. 00:07:31.600 --> 00:07:40.079 Through his word, he reveals his will, he brings life, he guides in wisdom, he executes judgment, and he delivers the herding. 00:07:40.639 --> 00:07:46.560 If God was interacting with man, it was primarily through his spoken or written word. 00:07:48.240 --> 00:08:00.639 And now, John is saying, this Old Testament idea of God's word, the embodiment of his power and authority, of revelation and nearness to his people, it's not an idea. 00:08:00.879 --> was in the beginning with God. 00:08:10.319 --> 00:08:20.639 And it's not just the use of the noun word that you should be looking for in the Old Testament, but anytime we see God speaking, we should immediately think of Him, the Word. 00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:23.040 So again, back to Genesis 1. 00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:26.480 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:27.519 And how? 00:08:27.759 --> 00:08:29.759 How did He create the heavens and the earth? 00:08:30.079 --> 00:08:31.279 He spoke. 00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:33.600 He spoke creation into existence. 00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:37.440 God said, Let there be light, and there was light. 00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:46.159 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their hosts. 00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:47.840 Psalm 33, 6. 00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:53.840 And so John goes on to proclaim, all things were made through him. 00:08:55.039 --> 00:08:59.679 And without him was not anything made that was made. 00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:04.879 And this is a concept not just in John in the New Testament, but throughout. 00:09:05.039 --> 00:09:19.360 We can read in Colossians chapter 1, for by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were created through him and for him. 00:09:19.919 --> 00:09:26.240 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 00:09:30.879 --> 00:09:35.039 But by his very being, he sustains all things. 00:09:35.679 --> his commentary, so I'm just going to read that. 00:09:50.399 --> 00:10:03.519 He says, the speech of God was not only the source of life to all creatures, so that those which were not began to be, but that his life-giving power causes them to remain in their condition. 00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:14.879 For were it not that his continued inspiration gives vigor to the world, everything that lives would immediately decay or be reduced to nothing. 00:10:16.559 --> 00:10:20.879 His light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 00:10:21.200 --> 00:10:23.200 Do you ever read the news and think, man, you know what? 00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:27.919 It just feels like the whole world is on the brink of falling apart. 00:10:29.279 --> 00:10:33.200 Well, I don't know if you know this or not, but it's been that way for thousands of years. 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:40.240 Because in the beginning, God created mankind, and mankind decided that they knew better than God. 00:10:40.720 --> 00:10:47.039 And Adam and Eve ate from the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, despite God's warning that they would die because of it. 00:10:47.519 --> 00:10:57.519 And since then, we have all literally been hellbent on destroying ourselves, destroying the world, all because we think we know better than God. 00:10:58.559 --> 00:11:01.679 We want to be our own gods, we want to follow our own rules. 00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:04.639 We steal and kill and destroy and we call it good. 00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:10.799 And so it's no wonder that the world always seems like it's on the brink of falling apart. 00:11:12.159 --> 00:11:23.840 But by his mercy, by his grace, because of who he is, because in him is life, he holds all things together. 00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:28.399 The darkness has not overcome the light. 00:11:29.440 --> 00:11:37.600 In these first five verses, John is making sure that his readers know right off the bat, he isn't just writing the account of a good person. and nations were judged. 00:12:05.840 --> 00:12:08.480 By him the promises of redemption were given. 00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:15.039 By him all things were brought into existence, and by him all things continue to exist. 00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:20.080 In him we live and move and have our being. 00:12:31.519 --> 00:12:36.960 The sad reality for most of John the Baptist's audience was that they didn't 00:13:32.000 The world did not know him, and the world continues to not know him. 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:41.919 Because the first man disobeyed, sin entered the world and into all of humanity, leaving
